AT A GLANCE: ATHLETICS For several decades, St. Philip’s has provided arguably the largest and most diverse athletics program for 4- to 14-year-olds in the southern sector of Dallas.

The Fieldhouse of Dreams September 10th marked a new era in Athletics for St. Philip’s School and Community Center and the South Dallas Community we call home. Despite the rain, the Athletics program shined as we held the Dedication and Blessing of the new DOHERTY FAMILY FIELDHOUSE, the first named building on the St. Philip’s campus. The fieldhouse, made possible by the support of The Doherty Family Foundation, The Real Estate Council, and Keller Webster and Associates, allows St. Philip’s to offer a safe space to hold life skills classes and to house offices, locker rooms, and storage for our athletics program for years to come. “This facility will become a part of the fiber of the community,” said Daryl “Moose” Johnston, who served as the event’s keynote speaker. Johnston began playing football as a kid and attributes athletics and his coaches for making a major impact on his life. He sees himself in the children St. Philip’s serves through its robust 50+ year athletics program. Through Athletics, the St. Philip’s ministry has accomplished its greatest reach in the sheer number of young Saints who have competed, learned, and literally grown-up on our courts and playing field over the course of six decades. One such former Saint, Edward Turner, shared his testimonial at the Dedication. Turner, who grew up in South Dallas, attended TSU on a baseball scholarship and currently works as Director of Community Engagement with Communities in Schools, Dallas Region. “My success is due in part to the seeds that were planted here at St. Philip’s,” he explained. St. Philip’s is tremendously thankful for the compassionate support of Alison and Ed Doherty, whose passion for Athletics and St. Philip’s now translates into a fitting legacy for their family and a beautiful gift to the community.
