T
ell Everyone About the Ministry
This November, I was invited to a local high school to attend a college signing of one of our alumni. When I arrived, there were several former St. Philip’s families in attendance. During the ceremony, they announced that this alum had a 4.0 grade point average and would be attending the University of Southern California – on a full ride!
While the ceremony was underway, I noticed one of St. Philip’s former parents, who happens to be the alum’s cousin, was crying uncontrollably. I turned to her saying, “This is a good day.” She shared that when this alum was born, she insisted to her parents that they consider St. Philip’s for her elementary education. She explained her desire to break her family’s generational curse. The cycle of illiteracy and poverty has plagued this side of her family forever. In her heart, she believed St. Philip’s could break this crippling cycle, thus creating a path of uplift for her family. She went on to explain that she had seen first-hand the tremendous effect of St. Philip’s on many families, many lives, and she was convinced the same could happen for her cousin. And it has! After her testimonial, she told me that she tells everyone she knows how impactful the St. Philip’s experience can be for children.

“In her heart, she believed
St. Philip’s could break this crippling cycle, thus creating a path of uplift for her family.”
My conversation with her reminds me of the biblical exchange between Philip and Jesus. It was so inspirational that Philip ran to tell others. However, when he attempted to do so, he was met with skepticism. He was asked, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip’s response was “come and see.” Just as
Philip wanted everyone to know of the goodness he had discovered in Jesus, so it is with this alumni parent. Each opportunity she has, she tells the good news about St. Philip’s School and Community Center. As you read this edition of our magazine, I encourage you to join the T.E.A.M. Tell Everyone About the M inistry!
We extend our deepest gratitude to every volunteer, supporter, and family who sacrifices to make St. Philip’s a possibility in the lives of those we serve. We thank you for being advocates, ambassadors, and angels that spread the word about the goodness God is orchestrating here on these anointed soils at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in South Dallas.
Blessings, Dr. Terry J. Flowers

A Word From The George T. Lee, Jr. Principal T.E.A.M.
Training Exceptionally
Advanced Minds
Our theme this school year is T.E.A.M. - Training
Exceptionally Advanced Minds. We have developed a graduate profile that aligns St. Philip’s value statements and mission with the School’s curriculum. This profile drives our daily instruction, provides our students with an unparalleled academic experience, and prepares them for the great things that lie ahead after they leave St. Philip’s.
The St. Philip’s graduate profile focuses on five competencies that students will master during their matriculation:
1. Servant Leadership
2. Cultural Awareness and Social Justice
3. Inter- and Intrapersonal Wellness
4. Intellectual Drive
5. Christ-Centered Living
At St. Philip’s, we expect excellence from our students – in the classroom and in life. We are equipping these young minds and hearts to:
• Enrich their communities through their actions
• Advocate for social justice
• Inspire through leadership
• Exhibit positive self-esteem and confidence
• Take intellectual risks
• Hold an authentic love of God, self, and fellow man that informs their daily walk and life choices

“At St. Philip’s, we expect excellence from our students –in the classroom and in life.”
St. Philip’s School and Community Center has a rich history of providing an exceptional educational experience for children, especially children of color. Today, we continue that legacy in producing academic scholars who we believe will transform the world through their FAITH, EDUCATION, and SERVICE.
Sincere Regards, Kellee Murrell

AT A GLANCE: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Our school currently serves 230 students in grades PreK2-6th (ages 2-12) who benefit from St. Philip’s rigorous, nurturing, and dynamic Christian-based education.
BIG XII Makes Big Impact on St. Philip’s
This past summer, The Big 12 Conference, in partnership with the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers Initiative, transformed one of our classrooms into a state-of-the-art technology lab and media center to benefit students and the community.
Additionally, St. Philip's School and Community Center was honored to host Media Day for the Big XII Conference - Women's Basketball Tipoff on October 16! It proved to be a real treat for our students. Our Early Childhood classrooms were filled with players reading to our youngest scholars AND our middle school film/media students received official credentials to participate alongside ESPN and other major media groups.

Early Childhood Program Reaches Capacity
Half of St. Philip’s School and Community Center’s student body now reside in the Crystal Charity Ball Early Childhood wing of the campus. The Early Childhood program, which serves children ages 2 – 5 years old, also reached its capacity this school year. This is a direct result of intentional investment and support made in the program these last four years.
Crystal Charity Ball, Gradus, Jack and Jill Foundation, the Lutz Family, and other partners enabled St. Philip’s to hire additional faculty, teaching assistants and an Early Childhood Lead, implement new curriculum, and expand our technology offerings to our little scholars. Our Early Childhood program is stronger than ever and more affordable, on average, than daycare. We are ecstatic that this vital program has a growing reputation as a stellar, affordable, full day, and working family friendly option in the community.

¡Aprendiendo español en St. Philip's!
St. Philip’s School and Community Center is proud to offer a dynamic Spanish program to its entire student body. We have two faculty dedicated to Spanish instruction – one for Early Childhood and one for Lower and Middle School. This year, we began implementing a new curriculum, Calico Spanish. Through its structure, students will gradually advance from novice to high performing by the time they graduate 6th grade. Our students are gaining not only an understanding of the language but also an appreciation of the culture and history of Spanish speaking countries around the world. Faculty and students have jumped right in with excitement, and we are already seeing learning gains during class time.

VALERIA DUPREE is the fourth grade ELAR/Social Studies and Fifth grade ELAR Teacher. Music is an everpresent theme in her hobbies, as she likes to sing, dance, and listen to all genres of her favorite music. Family is important to her. For Mrs. Dupree, one of the greatest blessings of working at St. Philip’s is being able to work alongside her brothers and sisters in Christ and use her teaching gift as ministry. “The faculty, staff, and students here are phenomenal!” FUN FACT: She turned down an opportunity to record music shortly before moving to Texas.

DEBRA HAIRSTON comes to us as the new Donor Management Specialist and as a former volunteer. When she is not reading novels, you can find her traveling and spending time with her family and friends. As a volunteer, she learned of the impact St. Philip’s has on the community, beyond educating kids. “It’s great to be a part of the effort.” FUN FACT: Ms. Hairston’s love of shopping stemmed from her love of sewing, creating patterns, and wanting to be a fashion designer when she was younger.

CHRISTINA HOOD joins the St. Philip’s family as the 3rd Grade Math and Science Teacher. Although her free time is mostly spent with her two little ones, when she can, she loves to curl up with a good book and enjoys writing poetry. She likes working at St. Philip’s because Jesus is at
the center of it all. “I love being able to pray for and with my students in class. I love seeing the students singing about Jesus in chapel. I love St. Philip’s because here, we are unashamed to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.” FUN FACT: Mrs. Hood has been married to her husband for six years, and they have two amazing kids.

JASMINE HYDER has a tremendous love for theater and singing that makes her role as the new Theater Teacher that much sweeter. Being a teacher here is bigger than just a job for Ms. Hyder. It provides her a platform to
extend her God-given gifts to young scholars. She enjoys chapel because it keeps her grounded and starts the day off in a spiritual way and free from worry. The hungry disciplined minds of our students keep her motivated and her colleagues treat her like family. “By the end of the day, I feel blessed and eager to come right back to fulfill God’s plan.” FUN FACT: Her one-year old daughter keeps her busy and exploring new things.

BECKY MADOLE loves St. Philip’s so much, she has returned as Senior Community Development Advisor, after a six-year absence. In her free time, she loves being active and spending time with her family, especially her niece and nephew. Her hobbies include listening to podcasts, any form of fun exercise, and painting. She feels that there is truly nowhere like St. Philip’s. “It is God’s miracle on Pennsylvania Avenue. The leadership, people, and mission make working here extremely fulfilling.” FUN FACT: She is a former 1st Grade teacher in our Lower School.

KEDRIC MCKNIGHT is St. Philip’s Chief Operating Officer. In addition to his love of writing, he loves listening to jazz, gospel, and R&B. Some of his hobbies include writing non-fiction and poetry, golfing, hunting, and traveling. “I love the servant leadership and community development
aspect of St. Philip’s. I also truly enjoy being instrumental in the social and academic development of youth.” FUN FACT: He is a thrill-seeker and likes to zip-line, bungee jump, and ride 4-wheelers and dirt bikes.

PASSION NEAL is the Teacher’s Assistant to our Kindergarten team. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, listening to music and traveling. Photography is a hobby that Ms. Neal truly loves. The environment at 1600 Pennsylvania is what she loves most about working here. FUN FACT: Visiting Africa is at the top of her bucket list.

TOURÉ PRIDE is the Marketing and Social Media Manager and a new member of the Philanthropy team. She loves to read, travel, and listen to music in her free time. You can usually find her working out or spending time with her dogs for fun. She loves that St. Philip’s is a fun, educational environment that gives back to the community and that everyone in the Philanthropy department has great energy! Mrs. Pride is also an alum of the Community Center, having played basketball for the Saints as a child. FUN FACT: “I have two black dogs named K-Ci & JoJo that act like human babies. No seriously, they act like real children!”

KEITH ROYAL is the new Librarian. He provides more than just books to check out, he affords students with the skills for interacting with knowledge and critical thinking. In his free time, he enjoys reading speculative fiction by African American authors and communication theory. “I like working at St. Philip’s because of its vision for the community. There is a sense of purpose and urgency here that is couched in a creative environment that truly appeals to me.” FUN FACT: He once took second place in a radio promotion where he rapped about soap while dressed in a bathrobe, in the middle of a mall.

BREANNA TURNLEY joins the Philanthropy team as the Individual and Alumni Giving Manager. Her hobbies include traveling, creating art, and writing. She says that St. Philip’s laid the foundation for love of self, culture, and humanity. “The amazing people here nurtured my spirit for learning and for that I will be forever grateful.” Ms. Turnley is peacock proud to be a part of this family. Why St. Philip’s?
Three members of our community share why they choose St. Philip’s

SHEILA PATE, 2nd Grade Math and Science Teacher
Being a seasoned teacher at St. Philip’s School for over 20 years pretty much sums it up. I received the buy in years ago and here I am now, still buying into the mission of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. God has sustained me and kept me here doing what he has gifted me with: putting my talents to work in helping build and uplift the next generations. I am very passionate about teaching children, building their character, and enjoying the many light bulb glowing moments. These, I call my phenomenal moments. As a teacher, I recognize I have the future in my hands. I have driven and devoted myself towards excellence.
St. Philip’s is a family-oriented community. The Community Center has offered many opportunities for me to volunteer and become familiar with the neighborhood. For me, St. Philip’s is an exquisite piece of art in the community, and I am more than thankful to be a part of this beautiful handcrafted artwork that God has painted here at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in South Dallas.
RUTH WILLIAMS, Alumni Grandparent
When my granddaughter, Megan, was three, our family initiated a search for just the right school. We had constructed a good foundation and wanted a school to build on what we started. St. Philip’s had a great reputation; therefore, we looked there first. Immediately after Megan visited with the Principal and Pre-K Teachers, our task was completed. An instant connection was formed, and Megan was excited to “start school.”
Over the nine years that Megan attended St. Philip’s, the impact has been extremely rewarding. St. Philip’s instilled leadership, confidence, respect for herself and others, and a commitment to achieve academic excellence daily. At St. Philip’s, Megan learned how to grow emotionally, mature spiritually, and become educationally astute. In relationship to her purpose, this school presented the grand opportunity for her to experience - daily - the love of God, while achieving an amazing educational journey toward excellence! St. Philip’s also prepared Megan for her current school – Hockaday – where she is thriving. Our family believes that we belonged and still belong at St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

DONNA ELDER, Current and Alumni Parent
As my husband and I were discussing why we chose St. Philip’s, we talked about the positive impact the school, teachers, and student body had on our oldest son who is now 23 and matriculated to St. Mark’s School after graduating from St. Philip’s. We wanted to ensure our 9-year-old son, Israel, had the same opportunities.
We believe it is important for him to receive a Christian education that strengthens the values and biblical foundation we are trying to instill in his life. Nurturing and validation by those who share the same culture and values make it easier for him to feel accepted and understood. THIS is the village, and here at St. Philip’s School and Community Center, the village works.
For us, there is no question that St Philip’s is the cornerstone of our children’s education.

AT A GLANCE: COMMUNITY CENTER IMPACT
St. Philip’s Forms Neighborhood Association
St. Philip’s School and Community Center has hosted monthly community meetings for several years, but it wasn’t until the summer of 2018 that the decision was made to apply for formal Neighborhood Association status. “Formalizing our status as a neighborhood association allows for residents to have a stronger voice in future neighborhood development efforts,” says Becky Madole, St. Philip’s Senior Community Development Advisor.
LaSheryl Walker, Director of Community Outreach for St. Philip’s and a resident of the neighborhood, was named Association President. Under Mrs. Walker’s leadership, the Association hopes to inspire community involvement and give residents a voice on issues regarding local government.
Because development in this neighborhood is imminent, forming the Association could not have come at a better time in the life of this community. The following initiatives are at the top of the agenda for the Association:
• An equitable development planning process
Operation Save a Life
On December 6th, community members were invited to interact with Dallas Fire Fighters and receive information to keep their family safe from a fire or carbon monoxide tragedy. Sparky the Dog was in attendance, as well coloring stations, aprons, balloons, and fire engines. During the event Kidde donated fire alarms and carbon Monoxide detectors to the Dallas community. Additioanlly, those in attendance could register for a free fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector for the Dallas Fire Department to install for FREE!!!

that ensures the community’s vision for the neighborhood is upheld
• Leadership development for neighborhood association officers
• Regular community updates and feedback sessions
The Neighborhood Association is further evidence of St. Philip’s on-going leadership and advocacy initiatives for the community, and its members are living proof that “If it is to be, it’s up to me.”

St. Philip’s, A Flower in South Dallas’ Food Desert
Over the years, St. Philip’s has implemented several programs to help combat the challenge of its location in one of our city’s most notorious food desert communities. These programs include an aquaponics garden, Our Community Pantry, Meals on Wheels Depot, and Kids Café.
In 2013, St. Philip’s established an aquaponics garden, which evolved from an open plot of land that residents managed and harvested. Gwendolyn Barjon, a member of St. Philip’s faculty and Director of Innovation, describes how the garden works, “Aquaponics refers to the combined system of hydroponics (no soil plant growth) and aquaculture (fish raising). In this system, the fish provide the organic nutrient base for the plants, and in a symbiotic relationship, the plants filter the water for the fish.”
St. Philip’s students and neighborhood children are instrumental in the upkeep and maintenance of the garden and also participate in harvesting. The produce from the garden helps supply Our Community Pantry, and is used by students for garden-to-table food prep and learning opportunities.
Our Community Pantry, established with the North Texas Food Bank four years ago, will transition to full
operations under St. Philip’s beginning in the summer of 2019. Because of its success, the pantry will be the model for similar pantries in food desert neighborhoods across the Metroplex. The Community Pantry currently serves approximately 600 households.
St. Philip’s Kid’s Café program is a federal food program that provides over 200 low-income children with a free meal three times each week. Kid’s Café also offers health and nutrition training. Through these vital programs, St. Philip’s is meeting the immediate needs of its vulnerable neighbors, while working towards transforming the community from a food desert into a food oasis.
Our Community Pantry, established with the North Texas Food Bank four years ago, will transition to full operations under St. Philip’s beginning in the summer of 2019.

EXTREME Summer Program Stretched St. Philip’s Summer Scholars

Additionally, St. Philip’s will renovate the old cafeteria into a larger library and transform the entry of the campus into a true Welcome Center to create greater campus security for our children and families. The goal for this exciting capital project is $9,500,000.
We are grateful to the Snyder Family for their lead gift of $1,000,000 to name the new Snyder Family Commons. We are honored to have Mary McDermott Cook gift $100,000 to name the McDermott Family Community Showcase Gallery.

AT A GLANCE: ATHLETICS
For several decades, St. Philip’s has provided arguably the largest and most diverse athletics program for 4- to 14-year-olds in the southern sector of Dallas.
The Fieldhouse of Dreams
September 10th marked a new era in Athletics for St. Philip’s School and Community Center and the South Dallas Community we call home. Despite the rain, the Athletics program shined as we held the Dedication and Blessing of the new DOHERTY FAMILY FIELDHOUSE, the first named building on the St. Philip’s campus. The fieldhouse, made possible by the support of The Doherty Family Foundation, The Real Estate Council, and Keller Webster and Associates, allows St. Philip’s to offer a safe space to hold life skills classes and to house offices, locker rooms, and storage for our athletics program for years to come.
“This facility will become a part of the fiber of the community,” said Daryl “Moose” Johnston, who served as the event’s keynote speaker. Johnston began playing football as a kid and attributes athletics and his coaches for making a major impact on his life. He sees himself in the children St. Philip’s serves through its robust 50+ year athletics program.

Through Athletics, the St. Philip’s ministry has accomplished its greatest reach in the sheer number of young Saints who have competed, learned, and literally grown-up on our courts and playing field over the course of six decades. One such former Saint, Edward Turner, shared his testimonial at the Dedication. Turner, who grew up in South Dallas, attended TSU on a baseball scholarship and currently works as Director of Community Engagement with Communities in Schools, Dallas Region. “My success is due in part to the seeds that were planted here at St. Philip’s,” he explained.
St. Philip’s is tremendously thankful for the compassionate support of Alison and Ed Doherty, whose passion for Athletics and St. Philip’s now translates into a fitting legacy for their family and a beautiful gift to the community.

LIFE AFTER ST. PHILIP'S
Rickyl’ Wesson, Class of 1994
Rickyl’ Wesson, a bright and passionate Texas Tech graduate, has had a wonderful impact on hundreds of little minds. What started as a dream of being a sideline sports broadcaster soon became a fulfilling journey in Education.
Rickyl’ always wanted to be in Education but felt that it was expected of her because of the heavy comparisons to her mother, veteran teacher and current St. Philip’s Early Childhood Director, Telissha Wesson. However, she has forged her own path and made a name for herself in the public school sector.
After college, Rickyl’ began her teaching career at a middle school in Keller ISD and then moved to another middle school in Lancaster the following year. For the 2012-2013 school year, she was awarded campus Teacher of the Year and had the highest 7th grade Math STAAR scores in the district. The 2013-2014 school year was her first experience out of the classroom, as she served as the TAP Math Master Teacher. She served in that role for 2.5 years. During that time, Ms. Wesson earned her Master's Degree in Educational
Administration from the University of North Texas. Her path to becoming a principal was lit by one of her former principals. In the middle of the 2015-2016 school year, she was selected to be the new Assistant Principal at Rosa Parks/ Millbrook Elementary. She credits that position for opening her eyes to so much and teaching her invaluable lessons about leadership. She says, “I always vowed to never forget what it was like being a teacher.”
In the spring of 2018, Ms. Wesson decided to interview for the Campus Principal position at Plummer Elementary in Cedar Hill ISD. She shares, “I love everything there is to love about Plummer. The staff is so hungry for success and the family atmosphere is outstanding.”
Her spirit and hunger for knowledge has always been one of enthusiasm and excellence. That drive was a seed planted very early on. “St. Philip's prepared me for life after St. Philip’s by equipping me with confidence. Equipping me with a spiritual base. Equipping me with words from the Creed that spoke life into my soul,” she explains. “The Creed equipped me with courage to be comfortable with exactly who I am. My experience at St. Philip's has been untouched. It is etched in my body and mind. In fact, I mimic a lot of things St. Philip's does on my own campus.”

She adores St. Philip's and is thrilled that her young son gets to walk the same halls (with the same teachers). She is also a passionate advocate for public schools, proudly stating, “I want my students to feel the way I felt at 1600 Pennsylvania. I want to pour into them all that I received as a young scholar.”
5th Grade Civil Rights Trip Plants Seed
in St. Philip’s
Alexis McDaniel, Class of 2012, vividly remembers visiting Montgomery, Alabama on the 5th Grade Civil Rights trip while a student at St. Philip’s. The many museums they toured and the walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, are highlights that come to mind as she reminisces about her experiences of learning about the Civil Rights movement. “Who would think that I would eventually attend college in the same city I visited years ago?” Alexis is currently a student at Alabama State University studying Political Science, with a minor in both Dance and African-American Studies. She loves the welcoming environment at Alabama State, as it has been helpful when she starts to feel homesick.
In addition to her studies, Ms. McDaniel has immersed herself in several activities. At ASU, she is a member of F.L.Y.

Montgomery. She is also a member of the NAACP where students recently encouraged people to get out and vote.
“I have had so much fun and learned so much about myself this first semester of college. I am very thankful that I am able to go to this amazing school but I also want to thank St. Philip’s for pushing me to be the best I can be because I still live by the very creed we used to recite with pride almost every day. I also want to thank St. Philip’s for encouraging me to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) because Alabama State University is the college for me,” Alexis proudly states.

Our Alumni are shining in the arts and culinary worlds!

ON BROADWAY – Class of 2005 alumnae and Juilliard graduate, Amber Pickens, was featured in a celebrated production of DON’T BOTHER ME, I CAN’T COPE in New York’s 2018 Encores! Off-Center season earlier this year.
VIRTUOSOS – Class of 2002 alumni, Bianca McClure and Jean Paul Barjon, are making a name for themselves in California’s music scene as professional musicians and arts educators.

BON APPETIT - Congratulations to our very own Class of 2004 alumnae, Gabrielle McBay, on a wonderful feature in the Dallas Observer. Remember her name because she is going places – as the article headline stated: “Chef Gabrielle McBay Has the Grit to Become Dallas’ Next Big Restaurateur”!

IN MEMORIAM
“Memory is the language of those passed on. Now residing in Glory.”

FATHER STEPHEN SWANN (1944 – 2018)
This fall, we lost a mighty force in the Education and Faith communities, with the sudden passing of Father Stephen Swann, Rector and former Headmaster of the Episcopal School of Dallas and a longtime friend and advocate of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.
Father Swann founded ESD with eight students in 1974. He had an opendoor policy in his office, and many of his students credit him with inspiring them to be better people and live lives of purpose. During his tenure as Rector and Headmaster, the School grew from two rented classrooms with eight children to over 1,100 children and young adults on three campuses.
Swann, a member of St. Michaels and All Angels Church, was active in many community organizations, foundations and committees, including the Advisory Council of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. From shaking hands with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a teenager to meeting with the Dalai Lama twice in his lifetime, Father Swann was a humanitarian and loved and embraced all people from an early age. He will receive the 2019 Humanitarian Award at St. Philip’s upcoming Destiny Award Luncheon, posthumously.

MARGARET MCDERMOTT (1912 – 2018)
Margaret McDermott was a centenarian and undeniably one of our city’s greatest philanthropists. Her compassionate support extended to numerous organizations and institutions linked to the arts, education, and science communities. This includes the Dallas Arboretum, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Symphony, Dallas Opera, University of Texas at Dallas, UT Southwestern Medical School, and St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Mrs. McDermott gave of not only her treasure, but also her time and service through leadership on numerous boards.
McDermott was married to TI founder, Eugene McDermott, in 1952. They quickly became “giants of local philanthropy.” After his passing in the 1970s, she continued their legacy through The Eugene McDermott Foundation that she managed, along with their daughter, Mary McDermott Cook.
Through the foundation, McDermott and her family became loyal and impactful friends of St. Philip’s School and Community Center in the late 1980s. Over the years, Mrs. McDermott empowered St. Philip’s efforts to expand its campus and numerous educational and social service programs, playing a significant role in St. Philip’s growth.
Mrs. McDermott is survived by her daughter, Mary McDermott Cook, and granddaughter, Grace Ellen Cook.
EVENT RECAP
Milestone Reached Through North Texas Giving Day Campaign
This year, St. Philip’s School and Community Center reached both the monetary and participatory goals of our North Texas Giving Day and Family Annual Fund campaign. We met our $100,000 goal AND achieved 100% participation among our families, students, trustees, and faculty/staff. We truly are thankful for the people in our neighborhood.
Many thanks to the Colonnetta Family and Colette and John Haigler for serving as Matching Donor Ambassadors for this effort. We are BLESSED to call them our NEIGHBORS!

Annual Community Thanksgiving Feast
This year's Community Thanksgiving Feast was amazing - with 170 volunteers, we served over 340 members of the community!
Thank you to volunteers from Bank of America, the Dallas Police Department, Atmos Energy, Top Ladies of Distinction - Trinity West Chapter, Top Teens of America, Cachet Youth Group, Amalgamated Transit Union and countless friends and families of St. Philip’s for making it possible.
A special thank you to the St. Philip's sewing class who, under the guidance of Mrs. Nan Works, Mrs. Selma, Ms. Shirley Perkins, and Mrs. Gwendolyn Barjon, created beautiful place mats for all the tables.
A Seat For Everyone
St. Philip’s was honored to host A Seat at the Table, on October 27th. This one-day workshop brought together community advocates, alongside South Dallas residents, to discuss issues on community expansion, racial justice, and education. Rapper and activist, David Banner, served as the keynote speaker. The event was supported in part by generous support from Communities Foundation of Texas (Racial Equity grant) and The Embrey Foundation
David Banner responds to a question raised by St. Philip's alum and current St. Marks High School student, Semaj Musco.
5th Annual Kidpreneur Expo
The stakes were high this year for the Annual Capital One Kidpreneur Expo, initiated five years ago to provide a platform and support for budding young entrepreneurs, ages 6 – 16! Thanks to the generous support of The Mark 11:24 Foundation, the Hudson Foundation, and Adil Adi of Worldlink, this year’s Kid Tank participants presented in front of a live audience and winners walked away with monetary prizes and mentoring opportunities. The judges included keynote speaker and celebrated kidpreneur, Kheris Rogers, of the “Flexin’ in My Complexion” brand, Mark Moussa (Arteriors), Dr. Omar Negrete (Google), Jared Johnson (Black Chamber of Commerce) and Manas Agarwal (Young Entrepreneurs Academy).

A Message from Our Board Chair

Several years ago, St. Philip’s adopted the tagline, “You Belong” to express that, as a school AND community center, there exist many opportunities to serve and be served. That sentiment continues to convey our welcoming spirit, and our desire to provide quality academics, afterschool programs, athletics, senior citizen services, and other offerings benefiting South Dallas children and families.
Last year, a record number of our friends, like you, accepted the You Belong invitation. Many found their place by reading to students, cleaning our aquaponics garden, serving Thanksgiving dinner, wrapping Christmas gifts or serving in other ways – the You Belong spirit was alive and well.
Our financial donations reflected the commitment of belonging to the St. Philip’s mission. We were humbled by the generosity of Alison and Edward Doherty’s gift resulting in a fieldhouse for our athletic teams. St. Philip’s Trustee, Courtney Flanagan, and longtime St. Philip’s supporter, Ann Mahowald, co-chaired a hugely successful Destiny Award Luncheon, featuring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
In addition to these amazing accomplishments, the following pages highlight contributions that made possible hiring a new reading specialist, the purchase of Chromebooks, funding our summer camps, obtaining athletic gear, and other initiatives in support of our school and community center programs.
On behalf of my fellow Trustees and our faculty and staff, THANK YOU, and we are glad that “You Belong” at St. Philip’s. . Sincerely,

Kathy Hubbard Board Chair
A Message from Our Foundation Chair
The St. Philip’s School and Community Center Foundation was established as a separate non-profit corporation in March 1997 to support St. Philip's School and Community Center (SPSCC) by soliciting, receiving, investing, and managing gifts, grants, contributions, and bequests to SPSCC. The mission of the Foundation is to support the long-term goals, purposes, and objectives of SPSCC.
The We Believe Campaign continues to grow our endowment in a significant way. We are very thankful for the community’s response to this historic campaign, which will embark on its 4th year in 2019. We are very pleased with our investment results. In May 2016, the Foundation switched its investment program to a lowcost, diversified series of index fund positions. As markets around the world have rallied, our investment results have been outstanding.

The combined effect of the We Believe Campaign and our investment returns has increased the value of the foundation’s assets to over $15M as of 9/30/18. This allowed the Foundation to distribute close to $500,000 to the operations of St. Philip’s School and Community Center for the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
As we look ahead to the continued success of the We Believe Campaign, we are delighted to be part of the St. Philip’s School and Community Center mission. I and the other trustees of the Foundation are pleased to be providing increased funds for tuition assistance, school operations, and community center programs. With continued financial support and lots of hard work, St. Philip’s will continue to be a beacon of hope for neighborhood families seeking a high-quality education for their children.
Sincerely,

Rich Enthoven Chairman
St. Philip’s School & Community Center Foundation

Ways to Support St. Philip’s TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
St. Philip’s has thrived through the tremendous support provided by a dedicated community of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. For decades, St. Philip’s School and Community Center has embodied excellence, in large part because our community has given generously of its time, talents, and treasures. There are many creative opportunities to make a contribution to the important work of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.
PLANNED GIVING
St. Philip’s is excited to announce the establishment of the DR. BARBARA CAMBRIDGE GIVING CIRCLE, our planned giving program. Are you considering including St. Philip’s in your estate planning? If your family would like to leave a LASTING LEGACY at St. Philip’s by making contributions through a bequest to St. Philip’s in your will or naming St. Philip’s as a co-beneficiary in a life insurance policy, please contact our Philanthropy Department at aherod@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 238, for more information.
CONSIDER EMPLOYEE CORPORATE GIVING
– St. Philip’s receives designated funds through the United Way (#180), the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).
DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT WITH MATCHING GIFTS
Many employers match gifts by current and retired employees. This is an easy way to double your monetary gift or place a monetary
value of your volunteer time to St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Contact the Human Resources office of your employer for the form to match your gift to St. Philip’s.
SECURITIES
Raymond James is the primary securities trader for St. Philip’s School and Community Center. By donating securities to St. Philip’s through Raymond James, 100% of the value of your securities is awarded to the School. Contact the Philanthropy Office for more information at philanthropy@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 239.
SHOP AND SHARE
St. Philip’s benefits from your shopping with Kroger, Tom Thumb, Target and GoodSearch.
THE GIFT OF TIME
From landscaping to mentoring, there are many ways that you or your business/employers can become part of making an impact in the South Dallas area. We need your hands, too.
