Review your studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grades on Parent Portal or talk to their school counselor or teacher if they are unsure about registering for S-Term. Call the Department of Alternative Education at 651-744-8020 with additional questions. Students in grades K-8: Fill out the registration form included with this booklet and drop in the mail by April 15, 2015. Students in grades 9-12: Work with your school counselor to register by April 15, 2015.

Breakfast and lunch
Academics Classes at convenient sites across Saint Paul help students focus on reading and math. S-Term provides a lively environment that inspires learning all year round.
Free to students age 18 and younger, two healthy meals per day include made-from-scratch entrees, salads, baked goods, and locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Transportation
Music Kids in grades 5-7 can study instrumental music during S-Term 1 and S-Term 2, with instruments and music books provided.
Buses are available to most students attending an S-Term school in the Area they live in (see map and bus guidelines on page 2).
Who Can Ride the Bus for S-Term?
To qualify for S-Term transportation, students must be picked up and dropped off at the same address. In addition, transportation is available only to: Students in grades K-4, with a pick-up/drop-off address that is within the S-Term school’s designated Area. That address must be one-half mile or more from the S-Term school. OR Students in grades 5-12, with a pick-up/drop-off address that is within the S-Term school’s designated Area. That address must be one mile or more from the S-Term school. Walking areas are predetermined. Maps are on file at each school’s office.

For students in grades 8-12 High school is an important time for all students. In S-Term classes, eighth graders get a head start on high school. Students in grades 9-12 stay on track for graduation.
Credit Recovery
Students in grades 9-12 who are behind by six or fewer credits can register for S-Term 1 OR S-Term 2. Students in grades 9-12 who are behind by more than six credits should attend BOTH S-Term 1 AND S-Term 2. Other options are available. Please talk with your student’s school counselor to find the best S-Term option for you. If your student is in grade 8, use the registration form included with this booklet. If your student is in grades 9-12, work with your school counselor to register.

For students in grades K-7 Students in grades K-7 who enroll in S-Term 1 or S-Term 2 receive academic support in reading, writing and math – all in a classroom atmosphere that’s very different from the regular school year. S-Term teachers have the flexibility to adapt fully to many learning styles and focus on subjects in depth. As a result, students have the extra time they may need to learn what they need to know. See page 7 for details on S-Term schedules and sites.
CDF Freedom Schools
Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools is a vital part of S-Term – a joyful six-week program that strengthens reading and writing skills. Field trips, music and books celebrate the culture of the students, building leadership, pride and persistence. With one adult for every 10 students, CDF Freedom Schools participants receive lots of one-to-one attention from community mentors. More than 500 students took part in Freedom Schools at SPPS last year. Nearly all of them gained or maintained reading skills. Eighth graders not attending S-Term 2 are welcome! What parents say about Freedom Schools in SPPS: My child loves Freedom Schools. He loves being taught by teachers “like him.” It was a beneficial and positive experience that I don’t believe he is able to get anywhere else.
