Summer Term (S-Term): Discover your Saint Paul Summer Summer is filled with possibilities! Saint Paul Public Schools S-Term offers K-12 students opportunities to catch up, maintain what they learned during the school year, and work toward graduation. Many classes and other activities offer fun, focused and interesting ways to continue learning through the summer months. Find more information and register online at summer.spps.org.

How to register for S-Term New this year! Online registration for grades K-8. Review your student’s grades on Parent Portal or talk to their school counselor or teacher if you are unsure about registering your student for S-Term. Call the Department of Alternative Education at 651-744-8020 with additional questions.

SPPS students currently in grades K-8: New this year! Receive faster S-Term enrollment and transportation information by registering your student online at summer.spps.org. Parents can also fill out the paper registration form included with this booklet and mail by Friday, April 15, 2016.

SPPS students currently in grades 9-12: Work with your school counselor to register by Friday, April 15, 2016.

Non-SPPS students currently in grades K-12: Register by using the paper registration form available at summer.spps.org or by calling the Department of Alternative Education at 651-744-8020.

S-Term Includes

Academics Classes at convenient sites across Saint Paul help students focus on reading and math. S-Term provides a stimulating environment that inspires learning during the summer.

Breakfast and Lunch Free to students age 18 and younger, two healthy meals per day include entrees, salads, baked goods, and locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Transportation Transportation is available to most students attending an S-Term site in the Area they live in (see map and bus guidelines on page 4).

Instrumental Music Students in grades 5-7 can study instrumental music during S-Term 1 and S-Term 2. Instruments and music books are provided.

School Bus Transportation

Find Your Area Find the Area (A-F) in which you live to determine your student’s S-Term options.

Who can ride the bus for S-Term? Students currently in grades K-4, with pick-up/ drop-off addresses within the S-Term site’s Area. Addresses must be one-half mile or more from the S-Term site. Students can be picked up and dropped off at an alternate address if located in the same Area.

NOTE: Families need to transport their children to S-Term sites if they are not eligible for transportation based on these guidelines. Contact the SPPS Transportation Department by calling 651-696-9600 or emailing transportation@spps.org if you are unsure if your student is eligible for bus transportation to an S-Term site.

Students currently in grades 5-12, with pick-up/ drop-off addresses within the S-Term site’s Area. Addresses must be one mile or more from the S-Term site. Students can be picked up and dropped off at an alternate address if located in the same Area. Walking areas are predetermined. Maps are on file at each school’s office.

For Students Currently in Grades 8-12 High school is an important time for all students. During S-Term 2, eligible eighth graders can prepare for high school. Students in grades 9-12 can stay on track for graduation through credit recovery.

Eighth Grade Opportunities S-Term 1 is not available to students in grade 8. In S-Term 2, students participate in leadership opportunities, prepare for the transition to high school, and work on higher level math and reading skills. Students in grade 8 who live in the Promise Neighborhood (see map, page 4) may register for S-Term 2 OR CDF Freedom Schools. S-Term 2

Credit Recovery Students in grades 9-12 who are behind by six or fewer credits can register for S-Term 1 OR S-Term 2. Students in grades 9-12 who are behind by more than six credits should attend BOTH S-Term 1 AND S-Term 2. Online classes are available through Saint Paul College for students who are 16-21 years old. AGAPE and Harding students currently using SPPS childcare will attend Gordon Parks S-Term, with AGAPE as the childcare site. Talk with your student’s school counselor to find the best S-Term options and to register. S-Term 1

For Students Currently in Grades K-7 Students in grades K-7 who enroll in S-Term 1 or S-Term 2 receive academic support in reading, writing and math – all in a classroom environment that is very different from the regular school year. S-Term teachers have the flexibility to adapt to many learning styles and focus on subjects in depth. During S-Term students receive the support they may need to succeed during the next school year. See below and page 7 for details on S-Term schedules and sites.

CDF Freedom Schools Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools is a vital part of S-Term – a six-week program that strengthens reading and writing skills. Field trips, music and books celebrate the culture of the students, building leadership, pride and persistence. More than 500 students took part in CDF Freedom Schools S-Term at SPPS last year. Eligible eighth graders not attending S-Term 2 are welcome!

Multi-District Summer Programs Students currently in grades K-11 can participate in sports, arts, environmental and cultural camps with other students from across the metro area. Camp Teranga with ArtsUs Students learn music and art through African drumming, storytelling, poetry, African-based movement, environmental arts and more.
