5 What and when you got attracted to Acting/Modeling? Was there any actress/model who inspired you when you were young and you wanted to be like her?.

I started my career in the last year of my school, during my SSC as a model. Since I belonged to a middle-class background, I had to quit my eeducation to support my family. I did numerous ramp shows, National, International, and various TV commercials. Later, before I started my journey as a Television Heroine, I tried my career in the film industry which was good but it didn’t work out for me much.

Had you done any acting course or any theatre or you straight awalearnednt on the sets while shooting? How difficult or easy was it, in your first outing?

No, I haven’t done any professional acting or theatre course. I believe acting is within your blood, you’re born with it. I was lucky enough that it was in my blood and I got the chance to explore my talent across various platforms. I am a self-made woman, who had started her career at a very early age. It is a popular notion amongst others that getting a break in the Industry is a piece of cake. On the contrary, I had to struggle for almost 3 years before I got my first break with the television industry.

What do you like the most about acting?

Acting is Fun. It is a different life all together. Because when you’re playing a character, you’re living the life of that character. You’re creating that character which is originally someone else. It is an amazing and beautiful experience all together. I just love my job, my work.

Which one of your roles you would say was the most challenging and why?

Playing the role of “Angna” in “JhilMil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga” was tough but at the same time very close to my heart. It was a beautiful role as I used to relate to that character a lot. I wish if I could get to play that character again sometime on a bigger platform at a bigger scale. I would summarize it by saying, ‘Angna is Aleeza’.

Is there any role which you have not done till now but would want to do?

I want to play a character of myself ‘Aleeza Khan’ as the way I am today, where the woman can be an introvert, extrovert, outspoken, smart, at the same time a girl with ethics. A girl who is a family girl, a working woman, also, a girl who needs love. At the same time a girl who is parent to her own parents. So, I want to do a character of the girl who is Aleeza’ Khan herself. I just want every woman to be strong and do everything that they aspire to do. Life is beautiful, enjoy your life at the same time sacrifice a lot of things and explore every aspect of life to the fullest.

What do you have to say about the changing face of Cinema not just in India but the world over in light of the CovidPandemicc, the OTT platforms with web series arconfirmalent? Is it easy now than before?

The OTT is a good platform with the current Pandemic situation for us entertainers to adhere to the ideation of “The Show Must Go On”. Honestly speaking, I don’t think the OTT platform would stay forever. People cannot always stay home. Earlier it was only survival but now people have to think about future, as we never know when the need might just arrive. Also, the OTT platform are going to a track of adultery which I personally believe is sending wrong message to our youth and upcoming generations. This needs to be addressed and more of empowerment to social well-being shows are required to be introduced.

Now to the youngsters and aspiring actors and actresses, actresses are your message? What is the most important virtue that one should possess as an actor?

In today’s world, nobody wants to struggle, everybody wants an easy entry and existence in the glamour world. During my times, people used to struggle and give 10 – 20 auditions a day. However, today some of the OTT platforms are giving a bad image to the society. It is in a way losing the ethnicity of our country. The youngsters are showcasing their skills and talent through these OTT platforms which has become very easy nowadays. In order to be able to grow and uproot your existence in the Industry as an artist/ entertainer/ performer you need to do your work technically correct and ethically right with a long term perspective.

What would you say is the mantra for success in one line?

The mantra to success is Hardwork. Be honest, loving, giving, and forgiving. Invest in yourself, stay focused and you will be there where you want to be.

10

What exactly is Ahimsa Silk? Ahimsa Silk is a nonviolent technique of Silk breeding and harvesting. It is a cruel free method that does not require the killing of any silkworms while extracting or weaving silk cocoons. It is as well perceived to be as durable and appealing as regular silk. What appealed to you about Ahimsa Silk that you embraced it with both hands? When I was creating my embroidery swatches I was inspired by the entire process of Metamorphosis where all the moths that we have saved through the process of nonviolence silk are turning into butterflies and this transformation has inspired me to encompass the Ahimsa Silk for my collection.

As a designer what are the differences between Conventional silk and Ahimsa Silk? As a designer, the fundamental difference between the two is the manufacturing process. We need to adapt to a technique of production that is in favor of our ecology, and Ahimsa Silk being one has attracted the attention of designers globally. The cruelty-free technique of breeding and harvesting these silk cocoons is the USP of this material. What are the main benefits of using Ahimsa Silk over conventional silk? Based on my experience with the material, the primary benefits of Ahimsa Silk would be: 1) It is a hypoallergenic fiber because it is developed naturally, 2) Soft and lightweight, 3) a strong and absorbent material that dyes and prints well, and 4) It is more comfortable and drapes well. When you showcased it abroad, how was the response and what did the foreigners say or feel about it? Were they receptive and welcoming of this Silk? I’ve got a wonderful response for my show with the Ahimsa silk collection abroad. As the collection had been covered by my media globally. People there were excited and welcoming about the knowledge of having a whole collection made using a nonviolent ‘peaceful’ silk. What is the future of this silk and what more do you feel should be done to promote Ahimsa Silk? Honestly, Ahimsa Silk has a very long way to go. It has already marked its presence in the glamour world, however, it needs to be exclusively encouraged by global artists to a much higher level than it promises a wider reach across global markets. Do you feel there are many more such hidden treasures in our rural India that should be given limelight and promotion? Of course, India is a culturally rich nation. We have a diverse range of cultural heritage that has something unique to deliver. I think we need to learn and explore our culture more to get inspired by their artifacts and inculcate them in our work as Designers.

17

Abhishek Goswami

was born in December 1985 in the state of Uttar Pradesh (Mathura) , India. He completed his MBA in finance and worked as a banker in a prestigious bank for a few years. Then realising his potential and love for art he decided to become an artist. His career as an artist started in 2016 and since then he didn’t look back. Studied fine art painting from College of Arts, New Delhi and photography from AAFT, Noida. He is known for the storytelling abilities, that can be seen in his artworks be it painting or photography. Abhishek is also known as the “Vision Master” by a lot of people. He is known for capturing self portrait in both photography and paintings, which is exceptionally complicated and his artworks reveals his real life stories. He has a keen eye for beauty in every thing and his ability to effectively represent reality more expressively is excellent. His artworks has been showcased in different galleries both physical and online. In, November 2019, his artworks were exhibited in India Art Festival (Delhi), which is one of India’s biggest and most prestigious exhibitions. Apart from that his artworks has been displayed in many exhibitions across the country. His artworks has also been acknowledged and appreciated by a lot of art critics. We in our magazine have got this wonderful opportunity to understand the artistic soul, that Abhishek Goswami is. He is mostly seeked by art enthusiasts for learning painting and photography, the learning process becomes more interesting as of the distinctive & creatively effective methods & techniques he has created himself. Which could be an excellent experience for aspiring artists. What was the inspiration in you that lead you to be an artist? It’s all about the real person inside you, who exists unbounded always. As a child, I wanted to see the whole world as beautiful as I see the world in my mother. This thought has always been my core inspiration. What helps you to create fantasy in your artwork and how does it differ from other artists? I believe every activity or even a thought is art in itself. It depends upon person to person on their way of doing things , weather you are eating or just looking at anything, you are perceiving it in your way . That very different approach makes you differ from some other person. Weather it is an act or a creation, it could be artistic. If you observe, express, imply & perform as per the real soul you are and when you record the real essence accordingly after enhancing it by your style of methods & by adding your imagination into it, the outcome becomes fantastical. How do you prepare before creating an artwork be it photography or painting? When it comes to painting, I don’t prepare myself. It comes naturally from inside and it doesn’t have any set time or occasion to come out. Photography also starts with the vision that comes in your mind and then I calculate the physical and technical aspects and capture that vision in real. What do you observe as an artist? I try to feel the real essence in everything. It’s not only about the looks it’s about the real character it carries in itself be it a living or non living element. During the process of creation does the location or set effects your vision in your creativity? If it’s about painting, I create my own world in it. Starting from the set or the subject it comes from my mind rather then the real physicality of it. But, some how the physical aspect is one of the step in creating the vision and implying it. When it comes to photography the set is required to be designed accordingly to capture the vision we have in our mind. Do you always stick to the concept you had in your mind, or do you tent to improvise? On the very set it does keep changing, it could be a small change or improvisation at any moment. When we see a potential in the given physical subject getting captured more artistically & accurately as per the vision we have in mean time. The process of creating artworks is always a continuous process that keeps on changing every moment and that spontaneity and randomness in our

decisions for implying do really helps to express what ever is in your mind and soul. How do you define beauty? Beauty is not about the visible appearance, it’s about the hope that the subject carries in its character. That character can be defined as per the subject’s potential to make you feel all those pleasures, what you are looking for in real and maybe you are aware of it or not. Do you have any favourite artworks of your’s that you would like to explain? No As an artist what are your next plans? I would like to keep creating meaningful artworks, which can help people in any possible aspect. They could be visual entertainment, visual healing or emotional support. What are the most asked questions by your students and how do you teach them the process to create such visuals? My students mostly ask me : 1. How do I choose my subject? 2. What is the process to prepare the subject? 3. How do I visually represent the subject in my final outcome? 4. What are the steps to follow for creating a story line around the given subject? 5. How to imply the required technical aspects? 6. Why my artworks look extraordinarily different from other’s artwork? As a teacher, I always teach them to be real and free while selecting the subject. It’s always their capability to prepare the subject and to execute accordingly as per the theme in your mind for the required outcome for the story line to get developed. The skills and technical aspects to keep in mind to execute while creating artworks could be - composition , selecting elements as per the story line, implying related forms and structure, choosing the appropriate foreground and background, implying proper perspective & depth to make the subject at the point of attraction & let it standout in the given visual. The most tricky part which we execute on the real time is lights, it plays a major role in filling it with required emotions to create an expressive visual. How do you develop the storyline behind the conceptual visuals and how do you execute it? Weather, it’s an advertisement commercial or a full feature film or just a single still image, it must have a storytelling magnitude in itself. Whatever we are trying to express & convey as a message. All of it should be depicted in the elements in the given visual. A lot of things play vital role when creating such visuals . It could be the set, way of composition & elements (related to visual dimension) within it. The way of lighting, movements, perspective and forms & characters implied in everything weather it’s a “living or a non living element”, as per the required theme to be expressed in the final outcome.

DJ Cheshta is all set to gatecrash the music stage in the city after an action-packed year as the Delhi's most talked-about artist. Whether it is electronic beats or crystal clear vocal delivery you can always feel her connection to music. It's almost as if she was best friends with the songs and treats them as respectfully as she treats her companions. There are many aspects of her being DJ. Her refusal to have a linear view of techno music by moving effortlessly in between different genres makes her an authentic composer. Cheshta's uniqueness lies in her ability to blend beats and synths with the most catchy Bollywood melodies that reach out to a wider audience.

I started with modelling in the year 2015. I had absolutely no plans to get into the glamour industry. But during my college days in 2012,i participated in a competition which was FBB Got Style Get famous by TOI and i won from Gujarat and represented Gujarat in the finale in Mumbai. That is how my journey began. Two years later, i participated in Miss India , for which i got a photoshoot done , and uploaded those pictures on Facebook, a few people liked it and i started getting offers. I shot an AD for Whisper and Vadilal Quick Food. And there was no looking back from then. In 2015, i got selected as Miss Diva Universe from Gujarat and in 2016 i was again Gujarat finalist for Miss diva and crowned Yamaha Miss Fascino. Got my first Gujarati movie Colorbaaj as parallel lead. Went on do cameo in National Award winner Gujarati movie Dhh and Bollywood movie Made in china. Music Video with ash king, Sanam puri. Have worked for more than 300 plus brands as a model and have done Ad shoots. Recently also ranked 8th in Ahmedabad Times Most Desirable Women 2020. I have been in this industry for almost 6 years now and the most difficult part of this industry is to mentally stay strong and sustain. As the work is not consistent and the pandemic has added to all the woes. Rest if you are persistent and dedicated and always ready to experiment you can do wonders in this field. Also you always have to be out there, always present as the competition is tough and people tend to forget easily. My advice to freshers would be stay consistent and be you. It will take you places. Don’t consider any work small, every work and experience creates you. And focus on making yourself a Brand Name. Be humble. No body inspired me to be in this field, it was completely god’s will. I completed my masters in Mba and then pursued this field. My future plans depend a lot on the current situation, but I really want to continue doing good projects and inspire anybody if i can

32 India’s Varsha Rajkhowa wins Miss Scuba International 2016-17 Varsha is the first Indian girl to win the popular INTERNATIONAL BEAUTY PAGEANT held in MALAYSIA A Beauty Pageant with a Purpose to Save Our Oceans through Beauty and spread awareness about Marine life. Indian model Varsha Rajkhowa has been crowned the new Miss Scuba International 2016 – a one-of-a-kind global beauty pageant where all the contestants are professional scuba divers held with the purpose of spreading awareness about ocean protection and marine life. Twenty-five-year-old Varsha was adjudged the winner from among 16 other countries including USA, UK, Netherlands, Philippines etc.. after a glitzy grand finale at the gorgeous Sutera Harbour Resort in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia on November 19, 2016. What makes it an even more proud moment for the country is that this is the first time ever an Indian has represented at the pageant and won it too, creating history for her country. Varsha impressed with her maturity and intellect during the entire event but her reply in the final question-answer round wowed all judges. On being asked, “What is the most important lesson you’ve learned during the competition?” She said, “The most important thing we learn is that united we stand and divided we fall. We must come together to save our oceans and to [preserve] beautiful marine life. “This is because what we love is what we save, and what we fear to lose is what we have to work for.” The answer earned Varsha the coveted title while Meryl Angeline King, 27, from Philippines became the first runner-up and Sun Zitong, 24 from China grabbed the second runner-up titles. Born in Assam and brought up in different parts of the country, Varsha hails from a defence background. She is an environmentalist by profession and wears multiple hats of a model, international-grade dancer, choreographer, national level swimmer and a certified scuba diver. Varsha’s mother has been instrumental in her becoming a model. “While in college, my mother encouraged me to take part in the RSI May Queen pageant in Pune where I was one of the finalists. I won the title of best smile and talent, and the whole experience made me realise my hidden love for walking the ramp,” says Varsha. But achieving success at such a young age didn’t come easy. She faced many challenges and had to face a lot of criticism for her looks and language during her school and college days as she belongs to the Northeast. But she overcame every hurdle with her grit and hard work. She has always dreamt of becoming Miss India one day and represent her country on an international platform. “Winning the title of Miss Scuba International 2016 is a dream come true for me. 35 Which city were you born and raised in Morocco? •

I’ve was born and raised in a city called Sale, near to the capital, Rabat where I had my studies.

How were your early days? Did you have any inclination towards pictures or editing or any form of art? • Since my very young age I’ve been interested in faces, colors, nature, pictures, drawings .. I’ve always been inspired by painters, outfits, magazines, films. And as my mother is in the field of moroccan couture, that helped me for learning about colors. Retouching is not just about smoothing skin as many people think. It’s about color theory, paying attention to small details, keeping the object real, doing it in a very natural and a subtle way till it looks perfect and pleasant to the eyes. How and when did you start with photo editing? • Well, that’s a great question! I was struggling for a long time with skin and acne problems when I was young. Every picture I was taking at the age of 16 years old was looking horrible to my eyes, I wanted to get rid of acne on my face! i searched on the net and used lots of softwares, then I discovered Photoshop that changed my whole life at that moment. It gave me lots of confidence seeing my skin looks blurry and perfect! It was all blurry as I didn’t know anything about retouching, but it looked perfect for me. That’s how my journey began and I have found the love for retouching. After 10 years of experience I’m still learning and I’m still loving what I do. it’s my full time job now. Why did you choose photo editing over photography? • I’ve always been enjoying taking pictures of nature and people around me. But it has never been my hobby. I love editing images and spending hours working on details. Who or what was your inspiration getting into picture editing? • One of amazing artists who inspires me a lot is Natalia Taffarel, one of the top retouchers, she’s absolutely a monster in this field. I learned a lot from her.

How did you learn retouching on photoshop? Self learning or from tutorials or any workshop? • Self learning was my go, since almost no body knows about retouching in my country when I started. • Even if I had my degree in graphic designing and 3D, I’ve always been caring more about post-production. I read every article that could existed, watched every video tutorial and practiced for years. And I’m still learning every day an other new thing.

Which editing softwares you use the most and why? • Simple, I use Capture One for working on the raw files, this software is really amazing when It comes to colors options, highlights and shadows control .. for me it is much better than the Camera raw which exists in Photoshop, you must try it, it helps to get the best out of a raw image. and the second sofware is abviously Photoshop. Which prominent photographers have you worked with and who do you like to work with, the most and why? • Since 2010 I have worked with over than 80 photographer around the world, some of them were amazing to work with and we built a good working relationship. but my clients are not only photographers, I also work with designers, stylists, makeup artists, cosmetics and jewelry brands, magazines, fashion brands, models and so many more. And There are so many photographers that I would love to work with one day, such as Mert and Marcus, their work is just fabulous! Which top magazines has your work been published in? • I love working on magazines projects and I had many publications in some good magazines such as, L’officiel, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Grazia, Glamour, Marie Claire. How do you see yourself 5 years from now? What are your future plans? • In five years I see myself in my post-production studio with a great team of retouchers making magic ! And also sharing my skills trough masterclasses.

36 How would you say your editing is different from other editors? What is your unique style? • As a retoucher you have to be very precise when it comes to details, small details always make a difference and also to be natural, do not blur or filter skin!! I love it when I spend three or four hours editing a picture and it still looks natural. It’s a quality that a retoucher must have.

What tips or advice would you give to young boys and girls who want to make a career out of photo editing? • Learn and practice a lot, take challenges and hard work, read about color theory, build a good portfolio and there are so many photographers that would help you for that. and don’t forget to love what you’re doing. otherwise do not do it!

46 Old Delhi is always a special place For some, it’s old fashioned bazaar For some, tourist attraction. For some, a hub with railways stations But I found my atmosphere in it too Once my friend introduced me the spice market near Fatehpuri masjid - and I started discovering more and more places around, tailoring my shoots into the spirit of delhi6 Why there ? I see the great contrast of wealthy glamour and simple local life. People wear traditional clothes and do many things in traditional way, pretty dressed model stands out Or I can put my subject in to merge with the atmosphere It’s very cinematic and keeps changing every moment. I have done more than 10 shoots in same place, and it was never the same. There is so many people, they keep moving and creating new and new scenes around. You only have to press the shutter button. There is always a challenge - wild crowd who haven’t seen a model in real. With male models it’s always easy - nobody cares, we actually can merge with environment, stop for longer, be more slow. With female models it’s always a rush - we don’t get much time for a shot before a crowd starts forming around - I have 1-2 minutes and we run further. So it’s never a static - it’s very much dynamic process. The most memorable shoots Once we had editorial story with super expensive Varun Bahl gowns and the model wearing jewellery costing half million or more. And the shot was in the mid of market at Jama Masjid, with the tiny baby goats in arms of the model. We also got a bucket with milk for her to hold. And while arranging the setup, didn’t notice how fast the crowd formed. We were in the center of thick ring of locals. And the circle was tightening leaving me no room for the shot. I always have assistants with me when it’s a female model. So, We took few locals from the inner circle and asked them to push back the crowd, and it actually worked! Later policeman came with a stick and helped to remove the crowd, and we moved further. Since then, I’m more attentive to the place and always have a planned way out from any street. It’s not that difficult. Attention is a key to successful shoot, except fearlessness. I’m not the first one, neither last. 10-12 years ago the clients were hesitating. Oh no, they were scared of such adventures. They still hesitate till now. And I can understand - the client needs hussle free shooting day, guarantee of result, vanity van and big crew. For them, shooting day is a festive moment - long awaited and prepared. It’s not possible in the place like old Delhi - we need minimum crew, easy to move, and not taking unnecessary attention. No equipment, no big bags, and no parking. But depending on the trust and bonding with the client, sometimes we can convince them. It’s requires a courageous and adventurous team. I see many people are trying their hands even in same locations - but I also see a tiny bit of fear in the pictures - in models face there is no relaxation and enjoyment, means whole team wasn’t so comfortable. We have to make model absolutely comfortable with this chaotic environment. It’s better they feel like in a computer game. It’s not real. I keep repeating and keep talking to them, so they don’t look around. How do I get my shots? It’s always partially reportage. I have a rough plan - maybe a route and the mood, number of changes. That’s all - the rest is happening on its own, like we are getting into some movie. I am always sure - I’ll get unique shot every time I’m going there. And trust the process.

53 Spotless Fashion Magazine: Who or what IS Lake House Photography? Lake House Photography: I am an English photographer, but I and my studio are located in Germany, close to the old walled city of Nürnberg (or Nuremburg, as it is usually called in England or USA). When I first setup my studio I decided to call my business Lake House Photography for the simple reason that my studio is in my house, which is next to a lake! It is actually a really nice location – many of the models who travel long distances for a shoot get to stay over in my guest room and have enjoyed the peaceful nature around the area. For the last few years, I have usually worked together with my creative partner Ghosty (@ cute_litte_ghost). Together we make up the team called Haunted Lakehouse. She not only acts as my assistant, but also helps me to plan the shoots (as well as keeping me calm when I freak out). SFM: What makes a Lake House Photography picture special? LHP: There are a couple of things people immediately notice about my work. Firstly, we tune our lighting setups to bring out as much muscle definition as possible, and secondly there is a trademark ‘warmth’ to the images. Over the years, I have come to specialise in shooting fit and strong people. I just love using the play of light and shadows across their muscles, ribs and limbs, and try to show the beauty of the human body. I have had the privilege of working with some amazing models including acrobats, dancers, body-builders, pole-dancers and Yoga teachers. But that doesn’t mean you need to be a professional athlete – one of my favourite models and my muse is by profession a Pâtissier, albeit a super fit and supple one. As long as they are in touch with their bodies, cherish and care for them, and know how to express themselves through their movements, we can make the magic happen. Speaking of magic, I love it when the model and I are able to progress from our initial inspiration pose, and develops something new and exciting. That feeling during the shoot that we are creating killer images together. SFM: Can you describe a typical shooting day? LHP: Usually, in the days or weeks before planning a shoot, the model and I exchange ideas and inspirations. During this stage we talk about poses we would like to try, or the types of ‘look’ we want to go for. Once we have some ideas locked down, we need to discuss practical logistics – what props, clothes, make-up would each look need and how will we source them? Is it practically possible to achieve them within the constraints of my studio? The next stage is to start planning the actual shoot.

This is where I really appreciate my creative partner Ghosty. Together, we break down the shooting day, thinking in terms of background changes, lighting setups etc. We will also be talking to our model, because many Lake House shots involve some pretty extreme poses or moves. Sometimes the model needs to work up to these, or needs to have a warm up or stretching time before she can attempt it. You normally don’t want to ask a ballet dancer to start her day cold doing high jumps or hyper-extended splits! Ghosty and I will setup the initial background and lighting whilst our model is preparing (hair, makeup, stretching). Once we start, Ghosty takes over responsibility for time-boxing our shots – otherwise it is far too easy for me to blow my entire time-budget on trying to perfect one shot. She is also on-hand to tweak the lighting setup, and to keep an eye on the model, looking after stray hairs or twisted straps that would otherwise cause me headaches during Post work. We always try to build in as many breaks as possible – Lake House shoots are hard work… Even the fittest acrobats and dancers feel pretty done in after a full day of shooting (I normally joke with them that if it doesn’t hurt, they are not trying hard enough). We always lay on special ‘model-food’, designed to be easily eaten without messing up make-up, and gives quick energy without bloating. It usually includes nuts, berries, grapes, grissini, rice cakes, dark chocolate. We also use these break times to plan for the next round of shooting. SFM: How do you go about creating your images? LHP: By now, Ghosty and I have worked together enough that we both know which lighting setups should work for which types of shot. Probably our most ‘typical’ Lake House look, known to us as ‘Standard Lighting’, is also the hardest to setup and use. Here we arrange gridded strips left and right at different angles, depending on the effect we are going for. Then we put a gridded beauty dish overhead. This is an extremely unforgiving setup. If the model moves an inch too far forward or back, all muscle definition is lost. So, when we are using this setup we really need to take our time making sure we have everything perfect before asking the model to get into a challenging pose. In the past I always used to handhold my camera to give myself maximum flexibility, but these days

er.

I generally prefer to use a tripod. This helps in several ways. Firstly, it eliminates one variable – if the camera position is always the same, I only need to worry about the model’s position. Secondly, on a very practical level, it saves a lot of wear and tear on my neck and shoulders. When I am shooting I have a tendency to get into really weird positions, and then I used to suffer shoulder aches for days afterwards. Last but not least, I can make sure my camera is level, and it forces me to really think about my camera placement. SFM: Did COVID affect your photography? LHP: Quite a lot, actually. Many of my models travel to me from other countries, so during lock-down times and with all the travel restrictions it was very hard to arrange for shootings. Hopefully now things are easing up again, we will start to get back to a more regular shootPhotography @lake_house_photography ing rhythm. Model @Laetita_Channel_Model &@ SFM: How should a model contact you for aArtur.story shooting? LHP: The first step I encourage any potential model to do is to look at my portfolio to see if this is also a style you would like for yourself. You can find me on Instagram as @lake_house_photography. If you are interested to create together, send me an email or a DM and we can work out the logistics. All of my shootings are done under a shooting contract. There is nothing scary about this – it just clarifies the terms of the shooting, i.e. whether paid or TfP, what types of images we will shoot, who owns the copyright and what each of us can do with the images. Once this is sorted out, we just have to arrange dates, and then I will pick you up from the station or airport so we can create magic together! One of the things I love about this work is how many of the people I first met as models then went on to became friends, often shooting time after time togeth-

I often get questioned from various people...What actually drives me? What rocks my boat? Or What is it that gets me out of my bed and feel like conquering my dream, my world? The celebrated non-fiction author John C Matthew once quoted 'Dreams don't work unless YOU DO.' One does not necessarily have to leave their bed to keep dreaming. It's what you do with it, that counts. But then what do you listen to? A brain that keeps you in check or the heart that makes you jump the leap of faith? My journey hasn't been the most flourishing. Starting at a simple analyst job at a Multi-national Telecom company that required hours of data churning. All I knew was my days were spent away but there was never a room for my talent. That was precisely 786 days. The brain said 'good money', but the heart said 'you are capable for more' . Well for 786 days I did follow the brain...the heart does need a chance. I now find myself doing a diploma in hair dressing & make-up from the prestigious Nalini & Yasmin Academy. People asked why hairdressing? Why not another corporate job? I had nothing against corporate job or its environment...all that mattered was what should I do that will keep my heart in check. As a child I loved styling hair on my dolls. Typical isn't it? My brother & mom became my automatic scapegoats for my wondrous mind and steady hands to be at work. Obviously no one was against this but what became a playtime hobby suddenly started to be an ultimate fascination. Much older and wiser, I started noticing myself observing different styles and trends during my graduation and corporate life. It was time to put that to test! My brain cringed for a while, but my heart felt ooze of fresh blood. I also noticed that my networking skills were quite natural to me that got me into a reputed Salon JUICE. Junior Stylist was obviously the title given but in 2 years I got placed with JUICE Dubai as a Style Director. The wealth of experience that it garnered connected me instantly with the top stylists in Dubai. It felt just right that I was doing what I supposed to do. Brain - pacified. Heart - exhilarated. Instantly it was a calling for me to upgrade my skills that took me to places like Singapore and Malaysia to do advanced courses. 5 years down and suddenly recession hit Dubai. The brain said - do not take unnecessary risks. The heart said is it time to go back and explore more? I smiled for a moment when I completely understood Aamir Khan in 3 idiots... I tapped my heart and said 'Aal is well' I landed up with the prestigious Jean-Claude Biguine Salon, Mumbai as a Style Director. Observation & networking always came naturally to me that I realised that I wasn't just styling my client's hair. I was grooming their confidence. Their smile of acknowledgement only fuelled my passion and desire to contribute to this industry even more. My brain - 'not yet Valan'. My heart - 'There is nothing called good time'. That was it! After a personal and professional turmoil, I was now looking at the board of my own salon. Beluga The Salon shined proudly. It was ready to welcome its own clients. I was ready to groom their confidence. 4 years and COVID setback later, the Salon is still sought after by its loyal clients. My motto was simple - if your style is personal, then I will take it personally. As we (Myself & Beluga The Salon team) thrive in understanding every customer's personal requirement and offer the perfect customised treatment, it has only helped me grow my clientele and add it as part of what I call Beluga The Family. 3 awards later, I remind my brain that I really need your help to keep me focused, but home is where the heart is. My name is Valan Fernando, Founding Partner & Style Director at Beluga The Salon. The salon is located in Shankar Nivas, Shivaji Park, Dadar (W).
