SIS 2016: Innovation for the Future Now in its third edition, the Sport Innovation Summit presented the latest advances in technology and media for the sports industry through two days of conferences and expert panels that once again made SIS a must-attend event. On March 2nd and 3rd, the sports industry gathered at the Roberto Cantoral Cultural Center in Mexico City for a new edition of the Sport Innovation Summit (SIS), which offered two days of conferences and debates about trends and technological innovation for sports. Organized by Moveo Lab for the third year in a row, the event welcomed entrepreneurs, stakeholders, sports organizations, brands and star athletes, with the notable presence of international entities such as FC Barcelona, Liverpool FC, Red Bull, Under Armour, Formula E and the UFC, among many others. The event covered relevant themes for the sports industry, debating everything from athletes’ training to the relationship with fans. One of the first topics on the table was digital engagement, where speakers spoke about the importance of this communication channel in the current sports market as a means of information and a direct form of contact with the audience. In addition, another important topic was fan economics and fantasy sports, and curating social media to draw in and capitalize fans. Moreover, as its name indicates, innovation took center stage at SIS 2016, with panels devoted to the evolution of sports. For instance, several speakers shared their experience of taking an idea, as farfetched as it may sound, and making it a reality, such as the multifunctional stadium Santos Modelo or the innovative Formula E races. Innovation in technology is also affecting athletes in a personalized fashion, with inventions such as the “smart textiles” or “wearables”, which help improve their performance through statistics and information in real time. Lastly, the event presented moving stories, showing sports at their best, such as the car project called “SAM” which today allows quadriplegic individuals drive a car on their own; or the “Wings for Life” initiative, which seeks to raise awareness and funds to research bone marrow diseases.
