Sports & Activities Directory Pines 2114 N. Flamingo Rd. #1269 Pembroke Pines, FL 33028 (305) 989-9380 www.sportsandactivities.com

Dear Readers,

Have you decided what you’re going to do with your kids this summer?

The last day of school is just around the corner, and summer starts on June 20th, so let us help you with that! Check out our Summer Camp section for a variety of summer camps. We have daily or weekly camps. Camps from Art, Aviation, Chess, Dance, Karate, Music, Soccer, Tennis and so much more. If your child is not sure what they want to do, try a camp that has it all. Mark your calendars, May 11th is Mother’s Day. We get to celebrate the person who does everything, and who is always there for us no matter what. I would like to be the first to wish all moms a Happy Mother’s Day! I hope your day is filled with everything that brings you joy, and you get treated like a Queen. And let’s not forget about all the dads. Father’s Day is Sunday, June 15th. A big Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, we hope you get all the love and appreciation you deserve on your special day.

While we pride ourselves in helping the community, we’re looking for a little help right now. Do you know anyone who might be interested in making some extra money? We are looking for someone who would be interested in selling advertising space in the magazine to be our new Sales Rep for Pembroke Pines. You get to work your own hours, so you can work as much or as little as you’d like. Before I was the publisher of this fine magazine, I started out as a sales rep 18 years ago. I had just moved to Florida, and I was a stay-at-home mom looking to bring in some extra cash and broaden my horizons while my son was in school. I fell so in love with the job that it quickly grew from a part-time to a full-time job. If you or anyone you know is interested, please contact me and you can become part of the Sports & Activities Directory family.

Don’t forget to check out our Events Section, the city puts on so many free and fun-filled events. Here are a few, Mayor’s Chess Challenge, Mayor’s Kids Day, 4th of July Celebration, Mayor’s Playball and Splash into Pines. They are always so much fun.

Please stop by our advertisers and let them know you saw their ad in the magazine! They always appreciate the recognition. Ads are the lifeblood of this magazine, and how we’re able to give this to the public for free.

Enjoy your summer and stay safe!

All my best to you, Linda

Dear Friends,

In follow-up to the recent election outcome, I want to take this opportunity to reassure you that Pembroke Pines remains energetic and committed to addressing the concerns residents have voiced for many years. We accept the mandate of the people who want us to find ways to address the concerns that will improve our city without having to raise taxes at these unsettling times. The Commission is more determined than ever to achieve the goals set forth for our city as quickly and effectively as we can. We embrace this challenge and are focused on moving forward in a way that is responsible and reflective of the expectations of our taxpayers.

Residents of Pembroke Pines will soon be getting some relief when it comes to the cost of their flood insurance. The City has recently been notified that, thanks to the efforts of staff and stakeholders, the City has earned a Class 5 rating from FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS). This is an improvement from the City’s previous Class 7 rating.

This new rating means, after October 1st, 2025, Pembroke Pines residents will automatically receive a 25% discount, up from the previous 15% discount, on all qualifying NFIP flood insurance policies. The City of Pembroke Pines is one of only two cities in Broward County that have been designated with this higher discount. It is estimated that the potential savings for the flood insurance policy holders in the City due to the Class improvement from 7 to 5 will be approximately $282,763 per year across the entire community of 4332 policy holders.

The change in Class designation is the result of staff’s diligence in pursuing the types of flood mitigation activities in the city that protects lives, reduces property damage and helps residents get some monetary relief as a result.

I was not surprised to hear that Pembroke Pines ranked 17 out of 182 of the largest cities in the country as being one of the Best Places to Retire for 2025 according to online personal finance company WalletHub. Our city offers an exceptional quality of life, top-tier amenities, and a welcoming community that makes it an ideal place for retirees. From beautiful parks and recreational opportunities to excellent healthcare and a strong sense of community, Pembroke Pines truly stands out and we’re proud to be among the leading US destinations to retire.

Everyone is welcome to attend a special ceremony on Monday, May 26th when the City of Pembroke Pines honors our country’s men and women who have died in the military. This Memorial Day observance begins at 9:00AM. at Fletcher Park, located at 7900 Johnson Street. For more information about the Memorial Day Observance, please call (954) 392-2116.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (954) 450-1020, or email me at acastillo@ppines.com.

Very Sincerely Yours,

This July, the Somerset Academy Panther Marching Band will take their talents to the nation’s capital, representing Florida in the National Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C. on the historic Constitution Avenue. The selection process is an honor in itself, with the band receiving an invitation based on their outstanding history and performance quality.

Preparation for the parade is underway, with rehearsals and fundraising efforts in full swing. Students are refining their musical selections, perfecting marching formations, and engaging in endurance training to prepare for the approximate 1.5-mile parade route.

As the Panther Marching Band prepares to take the national stage, they invite the community to support their journey. Through sponsorships, fundraising, and encouragement, Somerset Academy’s musicians will proudly represent their school, city, and state proving that hard work and passion create champions.

Since its establishment in August 2009, the Somerset Academy Panther Marching Band has evolved into a powerhouse of musical excellence and school spirit. Originally intended as a small pep band for football games, overwhelming student interest led to the creation of a full-fledged marching band. Over the years, the band has flourished under the leadership of band director Ms. Tatiana Rodriguez and a dedicated team of instructors, including longtime Color Guard Director Ms. Adriana Jimenez, current Color Guard Director Ms. Kayla Wray as well as several talented coaches who have shaped its success. Somerset Academy’s Panther Marching Band follows the corps-style tradition, participating in numerous school events and competing at prestigious competitions, including the Florida Marching Band Championships (FMBC) and the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) events.

One of the band’s most remarkable achievements came with back-toback victories at the FMBC Class 3A State Championships in 2023 and 2024. Overcoming challenges the students and staff remained dedicated to perfecting their performances.

Beyond state championships, the band has earned high praise, receiving “Superior” ratings at the FBA’s Music Performance Assessment and securing top honors at local competitions. Their reputation for excellence has solidified their place as one of Florida’s premier marching bands.

The students and staff are beyond proud and excited for this amazing honor. Your support is needed to make this incredible opportunity a reality! Various fundraising events are happening throughout the weeks leading to this experience. You may be a part of this experience by supporting fundraising events or making your generous donation directly. Please contact band director, Tatiana Rodriguez at trodriguez@somersetacademy. com or (954) 442-0233 or the Panther Band Booster Club, Board of Directors at somersetpantherbandbooster@gmail.com with questions or to donate. Lakeside Elementary continues to shine as a pillar of excellence, fostering a culture of learning, leadership, and community engagement. This year has been filled with remarkable achievements, reinforcing the school’s commitment to Building Greatness and Leaving a Legacy. From an inspiring Career Day to national recognitions, Lakeside is making its mark in extraordinary ways.

One of our recent highlights was the unforgettable Career Day, where students explored a wide range of professions and gained valuable insights into future career paths. Community members, parents, and professionals from various industries, including healthcare, law enforcement, engineering, and the arts, shared their expertise and experiences. Students were engaged and eager to learn, asking thoughtful questions and expanding their understanding of the world beyond the classroom. The event not only sparked curiosity but also reinforced the importance of setting goals and working toward their dreams.

Lakeside also had the privilege of participating in the Special Olympics, an event that truly embodied the spirit of perseverance, inclusivity, and sportsmanship. Athletes from across the district came together to showcase their talents, determination, and teamwork. The energy and enthusiasm were contagious as students, staff, and families cheered on participants, celebrating their incredible achievements. The event was a powerful reminder that greatness is not just about winning, it’s about resilience, determination, and the courage to push forward.

Adding to the school’s accolades, the Lakeside Elementary Chorus delivered a

breathtaking performance at the Broward County School Board meeting. Their voices filled the room with harmony and pride, showcasing the dedication and talent of Lakeside’s young musicians. Their performance received high praise from district leaders, families, and community members, reinforcing the power of the arts in education.

Another recent milestone for Lakeside Elementary came when the PTA earned the prestigious National School of Excellence Award for 2023-2025. This honor, awarded by the National PTA, recognizes schools that demonstrate outstanding family engagement, leadership, and advocacy for student success. Lakeside’s PTA has gone above and beyond to foster strong connections between families, teachers, and the community, ensuring that students receive the support they need to thrive. Their hard work and dedication continue to make a lasting impact on the school’s culture and success.

Through all these achievements, Lakeside Elementary remains committed to its mission of Building Greatness and Leaving a Legacy. Every event, every award, and every success story is a testament to the incredible dedication of students, teachers, staff, and families. As Lakeside continues to grow and reach new heights, it is clear that the legacy being built today will inspire generations to come.

Lakeside Elementary is not just a school, it’s a community, a family, and a place where greatness is nurtured every day. 900 NW 136th Avenue, Pembroke Pines 33028. (754) 323-6400.

This is not easy for me to write. I already feel very emotional about the thought of leaving my Panther family. After 37 years working in Broward County Public Schools, 22 of them as an elementary school principal, this summer I will turn off my walkietalkie and close the door to my office for the last time. I would like to share some of my thoughts with all of you as I prepare to retire and start the next chapter of my life.

I can’t recall the exact moment I knew I wanted to be in this line of work. Perhaps it started as a young child playing school with my brother, or maybe with the wonderful teachers I myself had as a Broward County Public School student. I could have been influenced by seeing the joy on my mom’s face while volunteering in our own neighborhood schools, or maybe it was the influence of so many family members in education that steered me to this noble profession. However it happened, I never could have known how much joy it would bring me. I have been so blessed to work with amazing mentors and colleagues in several schools throughout my career. As a Pembroke Pines resident, I was thrilled when I was chosen to lead one of our local schools.

When I arrived here at Pines Lakes in 2013, one of my first priorities was to make strong connections with the community and build a positive culture. It didn’t take long to see the impact this had on improving our entire school environment. Despite being one of the older schools in our city, when you step onto our campus, you can feel the love exuding from within. And while we are still reaching for that “A” school grade, we realize how close we are, which is why our motto for this year is to earn “64 and hear us Roar!”

I have many fond memories that will stay with me, and our Panthers will always have a special place in my heart. Many thanks to all who have supported me and our school. To my wonderful students, teachers, staff, and families, I know you will continue succeeding! Through our combined partnership, our school is in great hands for the next principal who turns on the walkie-talkie and opens the door.

Pembroke Lakes Elementary (PLE) recently hosted its Kindergarten Round-Up, welcoming the Class of 2038. “It’s always a joy to meet these young learners,” shared Mrs. Wagner, the school’s Principal.

This spring, PLE also held the Apex Fun Run, a dynamic event combining fitness, fundraising, and leadership-building. The PTA raised funds for playground improvements, while promoting character education through Positive Behavioral Intervention Systems (PBIS) leadership lessons. Students had a great time while learning valuable lessons.

During Literacy Week, PLE was thrilled to have athletes from Flanagan High read to students and give them books to take home. Mrs. Rebecca Thompson, School Board Member for District 2, also visited, reading to students using Novel Effect. The students loved the visit and the chance to celebrate reading.

As part of its commitment to student success, PLE celebrates academic, behavior, and attendance achievements. Recently, the school hosted a PBIS celebration where students with exemplary behavior were rewarded with Pelican Bucks, which they could redeem for a cookie from Publix at Village Square.

The school also held McTeacher’s Nights in February and April, where the Pelican family dined together to raise funds for the school and give back to the community.

A special thank you goes to Mr. Scott Rogers, the Community Educator from the Pembroke

Pines Fire Department, for providing Stop the Bleed, Hands-Only CPR, and AED training to the faculty and staff. The experience was invaluable to everyone involved.

PLE teachers continue to lead in education. Mrs. Katrina Fossella, the Media Specialist, earned third place at the Broward Teachers Union’s 28th Annual Innovative Teacher Idea Expo for her presentation on integrating LEGO Spike robotics into elementary STEM education. Third grade teachers Mrs. Monica Cepeda and Ms. Christina Shearer also shared their creative approach to engaging students through drama with “Broadway on a Budget.”

In February, PLE participated in a Day of Service and Love, honoring the 17 lives lost in the 2018 tragedy. Students took part in various service projects, including Food for Thought, making snack bags for food-insecure students and Blankets of Hope, creating handwritten letters and providing blankets for people experiencing homelessness. Kindergarten and first-grade students also wrote thank-you letters to local first responders and visited police and fire stations.

Additionally, third-grade students had the opportunity to visit Kennedy Space Center and watch a rocket launch, inspiring the next generation of explorers.

Looking ahead, PLE’s Special Programs students will attend the Special Olympics at Flanagan High School. 11251 Taft Street, Pembroke Pines 33026.

L egacy World Guard Team Represents South Florida Sports on a National Level

With over 20 years of excellence under their belt, the Charles W. Flanagan High School World Guard team continues to make history and represent Pembroke Pines on a national platform. This local team comprised of both middle and high schoolers travels the state competing each winter, garnering recognition for the sport and setting the standard for student athletes.

“As an alumnus during some of Flanagan’s most successful years, it brings me great joy to teach this generation what it means to be resilient,” said Nicholas Rodriguez, director of color guards at Flanagan High School.

“Our students know they are held to a higher standard than most high schoolers, and by teaching them to manage honors classes, part-time jobs, and more with a demanding practice schedule, we aim to help mold them into responsible young adults.”

Winter guard, also known as the sport of the arts, is a place where students challenge their athleticism while cultivating their creativity. The sport features a combination of complex dance choreography with the added element of manipulating and tossing equipment, most commonly in the form of flags, wooden rifles, and sabres. The rate of difficulty varies at every school, but at Flanagan, the World Guard students are pushing the boundary of what high school students can both physically and mentally achieve. Typically practicing 3-5 days per week year-round, the

students of the World Guard are committed to mastering their craft, all while honoring their responsibilities as students, siblings, volunteers, and outstanding members of their community.

Since its inception in 2004, the award-winning team has earned two championship titles in 2008 and 2012, and six national medals at Winter Guard International’s Championship competition, held in Dayton, Ohio, each April. The team has also received countless accolades on both a local and regional level each year that it has competed, furthering its mission to promote excellence within the Pembroke Pines community. In addition to the highly acclaimed World Guard, the Flanagan High School Color Guard program regularly fields both an award-winning A and JV Guard, comprised of students ages 11 -18.

After resuming extra-curricular activities post-pandemic, the students, staff, and administration at Flanagan High School have been committed to rebuilding the program and training its students to perform at the highest possible level. Most recently, the high school team earned best in class color guard at the 2024 Florida Marching Band State Championships competition in November and earned first place at both the Winter Guard International Tampa and Orlando Regionals this year. Currently ranked top 5 in the nation, the World Guard’s season concludes at WGI’s National Championship in Dayton, Ohio, this spring, where they earned 13th place in 2024.
