CLIFF DWELLER WINE CO.

Just on the outskirts of Palisade, tucked up along the railroad tracks and across from the Palisade High School, you will find Cliff Dweller Wine Company. Formerly the old Motorplex car dealership, Richard and Aly McDonald discovered the corky property and visioned their future winery and tasting room. Richard, a winemaker from Australia, has made wine around the world. Aly, a Colorado native, chased her dreams to California to make wine and the two met in Napa in 2009. Richard and Aly saw the potential of Colorado being a world-class wine region so, with their two children in tow, took the leap of faith and moved to Palisade in 2020. The tasting room, which is located on the front half of the winery, has a relaxed feel. Aly wanted to create a space where you could sit and savor the experience. With stunning views of the surrounding cliffs, the name Cliff Dweller truly encompasses a sense of place, telling the story of the region’s history, culture and terroir.

GRANDE RIVER VINEYARDS

Take the leap!

Grande River Vineyards offers a fresh take on tried-and-true varietals. The winery continues to evolve, reimagining wines to produce superior reds and whites. The goal is to craft more subtle, sophisticated Bordeaux and Rhône-style wines that appeal to both seasoned and entry-level wine drinkers. The winery also provides approachable, affordable selections for a variety of wine lovers.

Grande River Vineyards is built on strong foundations for newer European-style wines, including historic wine production from original and new hybrid vines, terroir that imparts a distinct minerality and high desert conditions featuring warm days and cool nights.

More than just a winery, Grande River Vineyards is part of a Destination Wine Estate that includes the Ten Acre Farms vineyards and the 80-room Victorian-style hotel, Wine Country Inn.

Located in Palisade on Colorado’s Western Slope, Grande River Vineyards and its sister property, Wine Country Inn, are nestled among 20 acres of mature vines, creating a wine destination where guests can enjoy premium varietal wines produced in the traditional style. This honors the winery’s legacy while reflecting the owners’ commitment to excellence, innovation and hospitality.

Colorado’s fifth licensed winery, Grande River Vineyards was founded and planted its first vines in 1987. The winery fermented its first wine in 1990. Until 2006, it was the largest grape producer in the state. More recently, the winery has produced about 5,000 cases per year.

W ith a rich history as Colorado’s premier estate-grown wine producer, Grande River Vineyards is positioned for new growth and innovation at its location near the base of the Little Bookcliffs mountain range and the Colorado River.

6 FUN + FUNKY STOPS ALONG PALISADE’S FRUIT AND WINE BYWAY

Colorado’s bike-crazed Grand Valley is famed for its singletrack, but in its eastern reaches, the town of Palisade also embraces a lifestyle fit for skinnier tires The Fruit and Wine Byway is Palisade’s namesake road and path route, running the course of Colorado’s largest wine region and offering no shortage of stops to satiate oneself en route . The full byway is actually three separate routes. The big loop, dubbed the East Orchard Mesa Loop, stretches 25 miles from downtown across the mesa before turning back and winding along

the Colorado River and a series of scenic country roads . The seven-mile West Cruiser Loop heads from downtown towards the Palisade Rim Trail, crossing the river and then hugging its bank back toward town . For an easier ride, the mellow East Cruiser Loop runs five miles, starting and ending downtown Embark on all three, and you’ll cycle past Palisade’s top wineries and fruit stands, with

ample cozy hideouts to indulge both your sweet and saucy sides . The Fruit and Wine Byway is in a constant process of evolution, with new wineries and shops regularly opening, meaning that no two trips down it need be the same . This route is meant to be undertaken on two wheels, and it can get as raucous as your crew is game for . You’ll never pedal more than two miles for a tasting, and the full byway covers more than two dozen tasting rooms These six funky stops en route liven up the ride with flavor, festivities and fresh reasons to pop the cork

THE BLUE BERYL WINERY

3587 G 7/10 Road, Palisade

The Blue Beryl Winery opened in 2022, but its roots stretch back to 2011 . That’s when Courtney Kiel, co-owner and winemaker, planted vines on the property where she grew up, which now serves as the winery and tasting room Kiel, also an artist who specializes in oil painting, designs the bottle labels by hand, and along with her husband, retrofitted the property into a chic modern tasting room that displays larger pieces of her artwork. “We’re combining the love of fine art and wine while also recognizing that wine is a fine art in and of itself,” she says. The central focal point is the cistern to aesthetically display the mother-daughter team’s labor

“Our deep familial Palisade roots give an authentic look into the history of Palisade and how it grew to become so popular for tourism,” Kiel believes. “Our water cistern that we turned into a wine cellar and display case is originally from 1905, around when Palisade was first founded.”

Have your smartphone camera ready not only to capture the tasting room’s naturally-lit

The Blue Beryl Winery

interior but also the rugged peak of Mt. Garfield and the jagged Book Cliffs range, located just behind the tasting room . This is the closest you’ll get to the Grand Valley’s most famous summit on this tour, and it makes a great first stop if embarking on the East Cruiser Loop

SPUN

237 Bower Ave., Palisade

When opting for the West Cruiser Loop, pull over straight away to peruse the yarn, knitting books and confectionary at Spun, Palisade’s local sewing, knitting and crocheting shop Located on the edge of downtown Palisade and with a striking view of the Colorado River and the Grand Mesa behind, Spun offers knitting classes (register in advance) along with supplies and design inspiration. Or, just pop in to peruse the book collection or to pick up a gift for the crochet crafter in your life — and, of course, to top off your own supply

“If you have the desire to create and the curiosity to learn how to use new tools, then you will have fun at Spun,” says owner Cayenna Hanna . A stop here is easy to work into any Fruit and Wine Byway route, as its downtown location fits into trips west, east and up to East Orchard Mesa. It’s also just down from Palisade Cycle and Shuttle where you can rent a bike for your outing

CLARK AND CO.’S DISTILLING

3926 US-6, Palisade

Here’s a local’s word to the wise: when downtown Palisade is busy, pedal out to Clark and Co .’s Distilling to enjoy a from-scratch cocktail and a burger on their patio adjacent to the Colorado River Clark’s, as it’s known

around town, is smack in the middle of the East Cruiser Loop, a perfect place to grab a bite after a tasting at Colterris Winery and before stopping into Bookcliff Vineyards, Vines 79 or Sauvage Spectrum .

The Clark family has been instrumental in the Grand Valley’s agricultural and agritourism industry for seven generations, owning one of the largest and most diverse orchards in the valley along with a seasonal fruit stand The best part of dining at the new distillery is that you can experience the fruits of each of these endeavors in a single stop, and yes, that pun was intended . The spirits and cocktails are largely built from what’s grown onsite

PALISADE PIE SHOP

3415 C 1/2 Road, Palisade

For over two decades, Hermosa Vineyards and Whitewater Hill Vineyards have served as the lynchpins of the Fruit and Wine Byway’s furthest reaches Pedal this far out, and you deserve that chilled glass of Sauv Blanc upon arrival, especially on days when the thermometer pops near triple digits You should satisfy your sweet tooth en route, however, with a stop at Palisade Pie Shop . Here, Anita Hix has been baking awardwinning pies stuffed full of locally-grown fruits since 2018 . Her second outpost in the valley — she also runs Anita’s Pantry & Produce . The location is a perfect mid-point break in your ride to grab a coffee and pastry, post up on the patio among the vines and get out of the sun for a bit

If you plan to continue for the full loop, stop to take a dip (at least your feet) in the river on the ride back to downtown Palisade . After joining the bike path headed south from 32 Road, pedal for just under a mile to reach an intersection where you can head left to hit D Road or right to stay on the bike path towards Palisade Just past the intersection, on the right side, is a cozy secluded beach perfect for cooling off

BLAINE’S FARM STORE

3419 Front St., Clifton

Peaches are synonymous with Palisade Blaine’s Farm Market slings some of the best in town

Here’s the thing, though . Show up before the lateJune peach rush, and you can take advantage of in-season cherries and apricots . After the peach season, it’s apple time into October. Coloradomade artisan foods and handcrafted specialty items can be found here alongside locally grown veggies, locally canned and bottled dressings and beverages, and the confectionary necessary to best prepare said harvestables Grab some fruit to go, because not overindulging is not experiencing Palisade fully . Add in a couple of farm-fresh eggs, and you’re experiencing true farm-to-table eating .

“Providing sustainably grown local fruits and vegetables and giving back to our community is at the heart of everything we do,” Klein says

TWP WINERY AND FARMHOUSE

3334 F. Road, Clifton

As the crow flies, TWP — Twee Wingerd Plaas or “Two Vineyards” in Afrikaans — is a few blocks off the Byway’s main thoroughfare But, its seclusion is TWP’s true appeal The name is an ode to South Africa, the home country of

co-owner Edwin Mocke, who, alongside Shari Cahill, opened the winery and accommodations property in 2022 . This is the place to head after your loop is complete, and you’re ready for a hearty meal and a relaxing vineyard setting in which to crash Choose from one of four suites in the white-walled, contemporary-Westernthemed property, and recount your day on the Byway by the fireplace.

Guests “enjo y uniquely curated wine tastings, a round of pickleball on our private court, fishing, paddle boarding on the lake or hammock surfing,” Cahill says. You can end your day in a more mellow manner with a rejuvenating plunge in the hot tub overlooking Mount Garfield, where Cahill says the sounds of nature — be they birds flying overhead or the wind rustling through the oaks — pair well with a glass of the housemade Satara or the tempranillo from Evolve Wines, which shares winemaker Corey Norsworthy with TWP. Whatever your preference for post-touring relaxation, Cahill promises that “TWP will activate your senses, fill your belly and rest your soul ” :

Craft Beer Scratch Kitchen Craft Cocktails 80+ Whiskeys

CORN VS. FLOUR

Words + Illustrations by Becca

Here in the States, Americans have become not just fond of, but bonkers for, tacos The team members of Wine+Dine are certainly fanatics, and we want to know all the secrets to the best taco Most importantly, we want to know which is better: corn or flour tortillas.

The debate is bafflingly split, but before we expose the results, a disclaimer, or preface, if you will: my sourcing involved yours truly asking, texting, emailing and calling friends, coworkers and restaurants To be fair, I did interview restaurants I had never heard of, but they were recommended to me through my connections (so I cannot deny that I am the common denominator for all of this article’s

sources) . I’ll leave it up to you to quantify the bias (but how scientific can a survey about food preferences be anyways?)

According to an Instagram poll, 20 people prefer corn tortillas while 19 prefer flour Extraordinary, no? On one end of the spectrum, Kitty Nicholason, Wine+Dine’s art director, believes, “if it’s made with a flour tortilla, it’s a burrito,” and Jonndre King, a local foodie, asserts, “flour is fluffy, lame shit.” On the other hand, Luispedro Blanco-Jenkins, a high school friend, emphasizes, “corn tortillas are gross and grainy unless you heat them up ” But, of course, our wishy-washy, two-tortilla-timin’ friends in the middle (including myself), like both! These

grain-pleasing people think it depends on the filling. Who’s right?!

It seems most restaur ants, including Jilbertito’s Mexican Food in Glenwood Springs and Rocky Mountain Taco food truck in Vail, use corn tortillas for tacos and flour ones for burritos The latter fact is no shock, since corn tortillas big enough for burritos would only break and crumble, but corn for tacos needs further justification. The owner of Verde in Boulder explains that they use two, lightly crisped corn tortillas for each taco because they hold up better and are gluten-free . My Austinite friends and I have to agree that flour is too bready and filling and should only be used for breakfast tacos, or “fat kid tacos” if you ask Bobby L’Heureux, Wine+Dine’s co-owner and director of partnerships .

In contrast, Taco Bliss, the former food truck in Paonia, primarily used flour tortillas, because “they have a mellower flavor and can show off the unique flavors [they] offer.” Not to mention they “soak up the juices,” as deliciously

described by one of our former editorial interns, Kaitlin Emig Managing editor, Lexi Marshall, also advocates for flour; “It’s what my mom always used! Maybe I secretly like burritos more and look at tacos as mini burritos . ”

Many prefer corn because it is perceived as more authentic, which is correct if authentic equates to old Historians suggest corn tortillas first reached hungry mouths in 10,000 B.C.E. when corn was domesticated in Mexico, while flour tortillas are believed to have been invented by Spanish Jews exiled to New Spain (current day Mexico and Central America) during the Inquisition of the 1100s

If you ask me, al pastor, fish, shrimp, chicken or simple black beans with sweet potato and fixings belong in little, baby, corn pancakes, and anything involving egg, potato, sausage, bacon, Takis, tater tots or sweaty steak need a soft, flaky, speckled wrap. But, I’m just one person! Get out there, try some Colorado restaurants, stuff your own creations in tiny cakes and keep an open mind :

ON THE WESTERN SLOPE

INTERNATIONAL MARKETS

The Western Slope has a thriving local foods scene . A veritable cornucopia, agriculture is diverse and rich, the farmers market and popup options are increasing and the farm-to-table experience is lauded And yet, Western Colorado is increasingly cosmopolitan . The highly local and regional

characteristics are being balanced by a healthy dose of worldly influence. This is perhaps most evident in the growing number of ethnic markets across the region They are truly international in that they represent local manifestations of far flung flavors. They serve small neighborhoods all over the Western Slope, with offerings from

Staples from across Asia are on hand at Orchard Mesa Market. Pictured are palm sugar, kaffir lime leaves, tsao ko (black cardamom), and alum crystals.

decidedly distant destinations . They offer a varied view of food culture worldwide, providing novel ideas about what to eat and how to eat it .

The closest to home, geographically, are the Mexican markets They are also, perhaps, the closest in terms of form The Carniceria Sonora in Montrose resembles an American market: meat, cheese, produce, dry and bulk goods . Upon closer inspection, though, there is a decidedly unique Mexican character to all of it Bins of hibiscus blossoms, pristine manzana peppers and chile-lime chapulines (crickets) replace the iced tea, bell peppers and mixed nuts of their American counterparts The meat counter is diverse and has a near constant procession of fresh cuts and novel offerings, like marinated pulpo (octopus) and short ribs . Likewise, the produce offers remarkable Mexican fruits, like sour prickly pears and fresh guava and mountains of classic Mexican flavors, like epazote and chiltepins

Sometimes, though, ethnic mark ets offer products for which there are no clear

counterparts in other U . S markets The Euromart in Grand Junction carries products like borscht concentrate, Hawthorne flower tea and various forms of dried, pickled and sauced paprika (the U S . pantry staple is but one of myriad forms the pepper can take) There are diverse pierogies, uniquely spiced Polish cakes and a veritable wall of unique chocolate options And then, there’s the incomparable Chalwa, a whipped tahini candy with a completely unique, flaky, crystalline texture.

Similarly, pan dulce is an immensely popular food that doesn’t have a clear American counterpart Primitos Bakery in Olathe has a superficial similarity to a donut shop, but the baked goods are actually a broad spectrum of sweet and semi-sweet breads and cakes There are head-sized calabezas — lightly sweetened milk rolls — which are the perfect complement to black coffee . Niños are decadent, fruit-filled, coconut-topped roll-cakes . And, cacahuates are giant, peanut-shaped shortbread sandwich cookies filled with sweet cream. The cotija cheese, local tortillas and bundles of chamomile

flowers for sale further the distance between the bakery and anything “comparable . ”

Also, beyond comparison are Asian convenience stores . While similar to their U .S . counterparts in some ways, they function more like a supermarket and carry fresh produce, meat and staples in addition to the more familiar grab and go snacks and drinks .

The GJ Mart in Grand Junction has the bones of a U .S . convenience store, but its heart is distinctly Asian . The cold cases are brimming with swathes of fresh Chinese veggies, like kailan and bitter-melon There is a full range of bulk dry goods from fermented black beans to canned longan fruit, and smoked fish and rice

cakes offer interest at the checkout counter The Orchard Mesa Market, also in Grand Junction, even has the requisite gas pump, but the model is confounded again, this time with kaffir lime, cardamom seeds and alum crystals . If these international markets and local food systems are ends of a spectrum, how can they inform one another? Are they mutually exclusive? Lotus Root Kitchen + Catering in Ridgway offers an answer, representing a synthesis of the disparate food systems . They embrace exotic flavors, like harissa and ponzu, along with house-made seaweed salad, kimchi and curry They celebrate local eggs and produce but also source ethical teas, thus giving customers access to quality regional and global foods

International implies a relationship between, representing a local connection to the world “out there .” They serve communities here on the Western Slope and abroad . As such, they foster understanding and familiarity and bridge whatever distance is in between
