Interesting Facts About Texas Article Draws Attention

Recently, James Venglar of Lodge 32, Victoria called the Vestnik office to comment on the July 24, 2023, Vestnik issue. “Interesting Facts about Texas,” item No. 13 on page 25 referenced Tropical Storm Claudette, which dropped a record 42 inches of rain over Alvin in 24 hours in 1979. (According to National Weather Service statistics, the city of Alvin has held the 24-hour rainfall record for the United States since 1979.)

Brother Venglar recalled Hurricane Claudette in 2003, which also made landfall in Texas, some 20 years ago. It’s interesting to note that the name ‘Claudette’ has been used for eight tropical cyclones/storms/hurricanes since 1979. Brother Venglar, thank you for reading your Vestnik and calling to chat. We appreciate you and all our Vestnik readers. And speaking of rain . . .

Quinlan accepts scholarships from District Three Director John Engelke.

Dear SPJST, On behalf of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Olin Teague VA Hospital System, I wish to thank everyone for their support of the Youth Day Service for Veterans.

The service project had the SPJST youth from across the state decorating lunch bags to be used to hold nutritious snacks to be distributed in 11 clinics across the Olin Teague service area. These include Austin, Brownwood, Bryan/College Station, Cedar Park, Killeen, La Grange, Palestine, Temple, Temple Annex, and Waco. These snacks are given out to veterans who are transported to the clinics and wait all day to be taken home, usually without anything to eat all day. These snacks are provided at no cost.

I want to thank Lodges 20, Granger; 185, New Braunfels; and 66, Waco for generously providing money and/or snacks. SPJST District Directors John Engelke, Bobby Davis, Regina House, and Jesse Pospisil provided additional financial and/or snacks to support our brave veterans. The Home Office also provided incredible support through providing snacks, art supplies, and stickers. Thank you all so much for making sure our veterans are remembered and honored.

To each of the wonderful youth that supported the program, we at NSDAR thank you.

For those in high school, remember to include in scholarship or award applications that you participated in a statewide service project for benefit of the Veterans Administration Volunteer Services and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

SPJST Youth need to contact the NSDAR chapters in their local area concerning available scholarships and visit www.dar.org/national-society/scholarships to see the scholarships offered by the National Society.

We look forward to working with SPJST and SPJST Youth in future service projects and opportunities.

Congratulations to Lodge 4, Hallettsville President Joe Siptak on his 50-years of Service at HEB

The Siptak family is overjoyed to announce a well-deserved milestone in Joe Siptak’s journey –his retirement from a remarkable 50-year tenure at HEB Grocery Company. Joe’s dedicated service commenced in 1973 when he began his career as a grocery bagger, and he ascended the ranks to become the lead maintenance personnel in Bay City, Texas.

March 5, 2023, marked the golden anniversary of Joe’s unwavering commitment to the HEB Grocery Company. The store’s management commemorated this remarkable achievement by presenting Joe with a 50-year retirement cake, a testament to his enduring dedication. To honor his legacy, the Bay City HEB orchestrated a heartwarming retirement celebration on March 9, extending to him and his family a cake, an enjoyable luncheon, and a plaque recognizing his five decades of exceptional service. Additionally, Joe received a personal letter of appreciation from Howard Butt, the CEO of HEB.

On his final workday, March 10, both HEB employees and customers alike came together to orchestrate a heartwarming surprise. Joe was greeted with an exuberant parade inside the store, which was an unexpected display of gratitude for his countless contributions.

Seated in a golf cart that played polka music, Joe waved a fond farewell to his family, dear friends, loyal customers, and fellow employees, a fitting and touching conclusion to his storied career.

Beyond his career at HEB, Joe Siptak is known for his significant roles as District Six President and Lodge 4, Hallettsville President. He has also served as the District Six representative on the SPJST Senior Living Centers Board and as Alternate District Six Director, exemplifying his commitment to community and service.

Embracing the newfound freedom of retirement, Joe now relishes in the simple joys of increased family time and well-earned relaxation. His legacy of dedication and his enduring impact on both the HEB family and the wider community stand as a testament to a truly remarkable career.

Vrazels Tribute Dance

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosted the Vrazels Tribute Dance at Flag Hall on Sunday, July 30, 2023, with a special tribute band amid corn harvesting and hot weather.

The preparations began on July 26 when the tables were put in place and decorated. The air conditioning units were turned on and ran until Sunday. Linda and Daniel Wilde were the chairs of the event. Cathy Bruggman and Kim Campbell chaired the kitchen along with Roy and Kim Malcik, Steve Bruggman, and Derek Campbell. The burgers were great. The well stocked bar was chaired by Brenda Maddux, her mother Pauline Hoelscher, and Jason Hoelscher. Shirley Hoelscher ran the stretch raffle affording the hall to raise some funds. We were blessed with over 700 people attending the event.

Alfred Vrazel sent love from his brother, Anton, who was unable to attend. Alfred introduced the former band members and mentioned those not able to attend. He then led a song or two to the great delight of the crowd. Most of the people in attendance came from far distances. One couple mentioned to the writer that they traveled from 75 miles west of Fort Worth.

The lodge appreciates the effort of all attendees and the work of the local lodge members, especially Linda and Daniel Wilde. Thank you all!

Celebrates 90th Birthday

Saturday, July 22, 2023, was a memorable and happy day as Lydia Faust celebrated the special occasion of her 90th birthday. More than 150 family members and friends packed the SPJST Lodge 9, Snook hall to honor Lydia and to enjoy an amazingly wonderful birthday party for her. Many special guests attended, and among them were SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. Lydia is a longtime member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook.

The conversations and laughter got so loud that one could hardly hear one another talking! Everyone was so happy to get together to celebrate Lydia, known to many as the “Queen of Kolaches.” To her children and siblings, she is the heart of the family and the glue that holds them closely together. To her friends, she is very loyal and always ready to lend a helping hand.

A huge and delicious meal of barbecue brisket and sausage with countless side dishes were prepared and served by Lydia’s family. A variety of birthday cakes were artfully displayed and enjoyed by all the guests. Of course, there were kolaches, too.

The day was all about good friends, good food, and good memories.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth’s National Hall: site of Cowtown Birthplace of Western Swing Festival

November 9 to 11

From birthplaceofwesternswing.com

SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth was organized on September 4, 1910, in the Fort Worth home of Frank Paprskar. At the time the lodge was organized, all the business was conducted in the Czech language. With the establishment of Armour and Company and Swift and Company packing plants in 1903, a large number of Czech families migrated to the north side of Fort Worth in search of employment.

During a Czech social gathering at the home of John Krivanek, Mr. Frank Paprskar presented the idea to organize a local SPJST lodge. With the help of John Krivanek, he explained all he knew about SPJST (Slovanska Podporudici Jednota Statu Texas - Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) and asked those interested to sign up as charter members. The first to sign was Bohumil Carboch followed by Josef Juran, Rudolf Koci, Vaclav Cihacek, Vaclav Becan, Frank Zacek, Arnost Valka,

Anna Paprskar, and Anna Becan. The necessary paperwork was sent to the Home Office in Fayetteville, Texas, and Lodge 84, Dallas assisted in the dedication of the new Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

After the initiation, the following officers were elected: President Josef Juran, Vice President Bohumil Carboch, Recording Secretary Rudolf Koci, Financial Secretary Vavlav Cihacek, Treasurer Vaclav Becan, Guard Josef Becan, Inside Guard Frank Zacek, and Outside Guard Arnost Valka.

They named the lodge Svaz Cechoslovanu (Alliance of Czechoslovaks) No. 92. After the meeting, there was a social dance held in President Juran’s home, where all of the charter members discussed and greatly anticipated many future Czech meetings and social polka music dance gatherings in Fort Worth. The meetings were held the second Sunday of the month in different members homes, and in 1917, they moved into their first building in the 2600 block of Houston Street near Fort Worth’s historic Stockyards. In 1938, a new significantly larger hall was built on three acres of land at the current address of 3316 Roberts Cut-Off Road, where meetings are still held on the second Sunday of the month, and where Czech polka and waltz dances are still celebrated to this day.

The early pioneering bands of Western Swing - the Light Crust Doughboys, Derwood Brown and his Musical Brownies, Cliff Bruner and his Texas Wanderers, Buster Coward and his Tune Wranglers, Adolph Hofner and his Czech Texans, and the King of Western Swing himself - Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys have all performed at Historic National Hall during the late 1930s all the way through the 1960s.

Cooking Up Success for the SPJST Larry W. Pflughaupt Scholarship Fund

United by a shared commitment, three cherished friends spanning three generations of Pflughaupts unite their efforts to raise funds for the SPJST Larry W. Pflughaupt Scholarship Fund. They prepare a mouthwatering array of options, from sizzling hamburgers, juicy hot dogs, and delectable sausage dogs to satisfying Frito pies. And let’s not forget the ultimate crowd-pleasers – homemade desserts that include tantalizing peach cobbler served with a dollop of Blue Bell ice cream. It’s a culinary experience that never fails to bring smiles to everyone’s faces. A special mention goes to Michelle Wockenfuss, whose dedication shines as she bakes one to two cakes for each meeting and gun show, adding a sweet touch to our cause.

Heartfelt gratitude goes out to our exceptional team whose valuable time and unwavering dedication make all the difference. We extend our thanks to those who stand by us, supporting our mission by indulging in our delectable offerings, generously contributing eggs, sausage, desserts, and making extra donations that fill our tip jar to the brim. Larry, a firm believer in nurturing the potential of the younger generation through education, continues to inspire us. Today, his spirit lives on as we proudly and humbly present two scholarships in his name, a reflection of his enduring legacy and our shared commitment to shaping brighter futures.

Lodge 196, Houston-West shares Independence Day Gift

Each year, the people of the United States celebrate our independence from England with all kinds of special things. We have picnics, parades, cook-outs, and fireworks. This year, there was a very special Independence Day occurrence that involved Lee Bratina, the son of SPJST Lodge 196, Houston-West member Linda Bratina.

The morning of July 3, Lee was one of a group of people that had volunteered to become involved in donating a kidney. This chain of people giving a kidney allowed an equal number of people to receive the gift of continued life, and their “independence” from a dialysis machine. This was made even more amazing in that Lee did not know any of the people involved in the chain. He was making an altruistic donation by giving his kidney to someone he did not know and had not met (he still has no information on who received his organ) but was very willing to do so because it was “something he could do for someone in need.”

Lee has always felt that it was important for him to help others when he had something they needed, and he could meet that need. Lee is recovering well and has returned to work. This will be

an Independence Day that Lee and the recipient will never forget.

Lee was amazed to find out that many people, including medical professionals, had no idea that you could give an organ to someone that you do not know and that is not related to you. This could be a kidney, a lung, or even a portion of a liver. If more people who are healthy and have well-functioning organs were willing to give, it would greatly reduce the waiting lists for those who need an organ to save many lives. For people who are on these waiting lists, their only chance for continued life is a transplant. Mostly the transplants have been from individuals who have passed away but have healthy organs, or from family members, if they are a close enough match. By offering to donate an organ, you increase the chances for these individuals to have a chance at continuing to live and to have a better life.

Lee says that anyone can prospectively be a living donor. They don’t have to know anyone who needs an organ to be eligible to donate. The group that Lee worked with is https://donatelife.net, and they take a lot of the difficulty out of the donation process.

They only take organs from people who are healthy enough to handle the process without issues. There are a lot of tests that are run to make sure that you won’t have problems and will be a good candidate. The only way to know if you are a good candidate is to check.

Donating an organ altruistically is covered as a protected act, so no insurance company can deny or increase cov-

erage costs because you donated.

The recovery process is remarkably easy going. Lee went in on Sunday, July 2, had the surgery on July 3, and was home on July 4. Other than some pain while walking and being a little tired for the first few days, Lee was mostly back to his normal life the day after he got home.

On a personal note, while I was working on this article, I came to the realization that I may know the person that received Lee’s kidney. I have learned that someone from my church received a kidney on the same morning, in the same hospital where Lee was giving his amazing gift. The similarities are amazing in the fact that they both have two daughters who are 11 and 9 years old, they both work in the computer field for major energy companies, drive all electric cars, and enjoy some of the same hobbies.

The member of my church is also recovering well and is back to more normal daily activities and very happy to be off of the machine he had to be hooked up to for two hours at a time eight times a day.

My sincere thank you goes out to Lee and all the others that are willing to do such an awesome and loving thing.

If any of you feel like you would like to see if you could be a donor, contact your doctor or visit https://donatelife.net to learn how to be tested.

Respectively submitted, Don Fruin, Reporter Lodge 196, Houston-West —SPJST—

Protecting the Future

A mutual friend with a new dog brought Stephen and Katie together. Stephen had headed to his friend’s house to meet the new furry member of the family, and when he got there, he saw Katie playing with dog in the backyard. “Katie was so outgoing,” says Stephen. “She was the nicest person you’ll ever meet.” That first meeting led to beach outings and concerts, and over time to getting married and thinking about starting a family.

It was Katie who suggested they get life insurance. Stephen admits he wasn’t too happy about the idea. They were young and healthy, so he didn’t see the point. Katie, however, convinced him to sit down with insurance

professional Rose Goheen, who walked them through the process and presented them with affordable options. They both decided to get life insurance coverage.

A Growing Family

When the couple welcomed Chase, they decided to reevaluate their life insurance. Given their expanding family and responsibilities, they both bought additional life insurance.

It was during her recovery from giving birth to Reid that Katie realized something was wrong. Her doctor confirmed her suspicion that the abdominal lump she felt was something much more serious. In fact, it was an aggressive form of cancer.

Katie, with the love and support of her family, valiantly fought the disease, but just over a year later it claimed this young mom’s life. She was just 30.

No words can capture the devastation that Stephen and his boys felt at Katie’s loss. “It’s horrible to lose your soul mate and best friend,” he says. “But I have two boys to support, and I want them to know their dad can carry on.”

Life insurance has helped with that process. “Nothing can bring Katie back, but having life insurance meant we didn’t lose everything,” he says. “I don’t earn enough alone to afford living in our house. Life insurance has eased my financial worries on so many levels.”

Thinking back to that first meeting with Rose, Stephen says: “Katie was

5 Fun Facts about August

Summer is in full swing in August. Come the eighth month of the calendar year, temperatures outside tend to be especially steamy, and individuals and families are doing all they can to make the most of the last full month of summer. As summer winds down, individuals can ponder these fun facts about the month of August.

1. Not unlike July, August is named after a notable individual associated with ancient Rome. Augustus Caesar, also known as Octavian and sometimes referred to as Caesar Augustus, was the first Roman emperor. Augustus’s reign was a lengthy one, beginning in 27

B.C. and lasting until his death in A.D.

14. Augustus’s maternal great-uncle was Julius Caesar, who happens to be the namesake of July.

2. August weather can make some people uncomfortable, and that has made the month part of what’s become known as “The Dog Days of Summer.” The Farmer’s Almanac indicates that the moniker is linked to the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks believed that the rising of Sirius in mid- to late-summer caused the temperatures to rise and conditions to become less comfortable. Though temperatures remain hot and conditions humid in many parts of the northern hemisphere throughout the month of August, the dog days officially end on August 11.

3. Millions of adults feel there’s no more refreshing beverage on a warm summer evening than a cold beer, and that may be even more so on the first Friday of August. That day marks International Beer Day®, which began as a local event in the western United States in 2007 but has since spread globally. More than 200 cities in 80 countries and across six continents now celebrate International Beer Day®, and celebrants can take part by enjoying a cold one and/or giving a loved one a beer. This year’s celebration took place on Friday, August 4.

4. One of the most enduring motion pictures in Hollywood history premiered in August nearly 85 years ago.

“The Wizard of Oz” starring Judy Garland premiered at the Orpheum Theatre

Phelps won his eighth gold medal in Beijing on August 17 in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay, officially eclipsing fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz, who had won seven gold medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Celebrating Youth Excellence, Creativity, and Community Spirit Talents shine bright at the 2023 spjst state youth showcase

The 2023 SPJST State Youth Showcase, a captivating celebration of youthful creativity and talent, concluded on a high note on Saturday, July 29 at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple, Texas. With an array of remarkable performances, inspiring displays of skill, and a strong sense of community spirit, this year’s event left a lasting impression on all who attended.

The showcase, organized by the SPJST Home Office, brought together 114 bright and talented youth participants from across the region. The theme of the event, “Painting the World a Better Place,” set the tone for the showcase, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talents and encouraging them to reach for the stars.

The two-day extravaganza featured an eclectic mix of categories, including Creative Arts, Talent, Royalty, and a Special Category. From intricately crafted artworks to awe-inspiring musical performances, the showcase truly had something for everyone.

Friday’s festivities kicked off with the Showcase check-in at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. Excitement filled the air as participants presented their crafts, costumes, and talents, while also connecting with fellow participants, mentors, and organizers.

The Special Category, a 30-minute challenge, provided an opportunity for participants to showcase their ingenuity and quick thinking by crafting a piece of art using an 18-inch by 18-inch square of aluminum foil. The engaging and dynamic projects demonstrated the participants’ ability to adapt and create under pressure.

Saturday dawned with an air of anticipation as doors opened at 8:30 a.m. The opening ceremony, Beseda, and Talent competitions followed, captivating the audience with their energy and flair.

A highlight of the event was the recognition of past State Royalty, a touching tribute to those who had graced the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day stage in previous years. The atmosphere was one of nostalgia and gratitude, as

the present Royalty and participants paid homage to those who came before them.

The event culminated with the announcement of age group winners, District and State Mr. and Miss SPJST, and a heartwarming showcase of photos and videos capturing the essence of the showcase.

Frank Horak, the State Fraternal Director, expressed his appreciation, saying, “The 2023 SPJST State Youth Showcase has been a remarkable journey of inspiration and talent. We are immensely proud of all our young participants who have showcased their creativity and passion. This event truly embodies the spirit of community, empowerment, and growth.”

The SPJST State Youth Showcase, with its fusion of talent, camaraderie, and inspiration, serves as a reminder of the incredible potential within our youth. As the curtains close on this year’s event, the SPJST community eagerly anticipates the next chapter in this ongoing celebration of youthful excellence.

Painting the World a Better Place For 70 Years

2023 State Merit Scholarship Winner • Caleb See of Lodge 9, Snook - District One

Painting the world to make it a better place can be thought of in a literal sense or a metaphorical one. There is the physical act of painting an object and then there is figurative take on it of making the world a brighter and more colorful place with actions. Painting and art have been used in the literal sense to express emotions, political agendas, and as a means of record keeping for thousands of years. While art creates a positive impact on those who are viewing it, I would have to say that SPJST paints the world a better place with more of a metaphorical approach and just a splash of physical art.

SPJST began as a fraternal organization for Czech immigrants who moved to Texas, but it now also preserves the Czech heritage, promotes good citizenship, and is a life insurance agency. The organization builds a family full of amazing people who do anything and everything it takes to make the world around them a better place. I served as the SPJST State King for the 2021-2022 year which meant that I was an ambassador for the organization and represented the program at events across the state. I attended many Czech festivals, rode in parades on floats, worked informational booths, and spoke to large crowds about everything SPJST has to offer. There were many events that I attended, but the one thing I noticed was that there was also an SPJST Lodge or two working tirelessly to make their community more inviting and friendly to all who were celebrating the event.

My favorite thing about the Czech

festivals was seeing the lively Czech heritage being celebrated. The vibrant kroje, lively polkas, and kolaches by the dozen painted a beautiful and unique picture that many people might not see without the assistance of SPJST and its members. Our Youth Club has helped keep this culture alive by dancing the Ceska Beseda (a combination of many waltzes and polkas from the Moravian re gion) at World Fest in Bryan/College Sta tion, Kolache Fes tival in Caldwell, Musiky, Musiky in La Grange, and at other festivals and events throughout the great state of Texas for years now. I always loved walking down the street in my kroj and getting confused looks but then being provided with the opportunity to teach people about my heritage.

The main goal of the SPJST Youth Program is to grow members into contributing members of society. They learn public speaking and leadership skills while also completing community service tasks in ways that require them to use creativity and self-expression. SPJST members complete an array of community service acts throughout

the year, but my favorite is the Snook Lodge’s Big Spring Clean. In this project, the adult lodge and youth club members join hands to clean and beautify our local cemetery. We remove trash, weeds, and flowers from old graves then place new flowers where needed. The cemetery looks completely different as it has been brought to life with the bold and colorful flowers. The members are not actually painting, but they are leaving their mark behind on the community and its residents. SPJST and its members leave behind a clear, positive change in the community. The SPJST Youth Program also supports the arts through its Youth Achievement Day (YAD). There are talent categories that include photography, baking, handicraft, sewing, group talent, individual talent, royalty, painting, drawing, etc. YAD personally affected me by turning a shy young boy who always clung to his mother’s leg into a young man eager to speak in front of hundreds while running for the title of State King. It also taught me to love needlework and handicrafts as these were

my favorite categories to compete in. I would spend a lot of time researching and looking for craft items and ideas, and then spend countless hours working on the perfect project. I loved making beautiful and interesting art and sharing it with my SPJST family.

The SPJST Youth Club Motto is “I pledge my support to uphold the high ideals of the SPJST: Seeking brotherhood; Pledging benevolence; Joining hands; Supporting humanity; Trusting in my ability to make this world a better place. This I pledge.” While SPJST is doing its best to leave a positive difference, painting the world a better place will always have challenges. Society does not seem to value the importance of hard work and pure intentions like it used to.

This loss of character has impacted our world and impaired the SPJST organization. Our youth club membership has lessened with fewer parents encouraging and facilitating their children’s involvement. Ultimately, the power to paint the world a better place lies within the individual and with fewer individuals being involved, that diminishes the impact we can have. One thing that is certain is that the character of the SPJST organization has not dimmed like the rest of the world. There is a shared vision within the fraternity of SPJST for the world we want to live in, and its members will never stop Seeking, Promoting, Joining, Supporting, and Trusting until that vision is reached.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth excited about sixth grade school year

Dear Vestnik Readers,

Lodge 47, Seaton youth visits grandparents in College Station

Dear Vestnik Readers, It is now August. I don’t want to go back to school. Last week, I went to my grandparents’ house. I had fun. They live in College Station. One day while I was there, we went to Brenham. We went to see the Blue Bell Ice Cream Museum. Let me tell you about Bluebell. I thought it was supposed to be a 45-minute tour. It turns out, it was only a 15-minute tour. Gosh, what a disappointment! Well, I hope if you go to Blue Bell, you know that it’s going to be a disappointment now. They had a gift shop, but everything in there was so pricey. We also got to go to a haunted graveyard, but it was closed. Then we wanted to go to Golden Corral, but there wasn’t one in Brenham. Even the gas station was a disappointment. The gas was too pricey. Or maybe we went to the gas station to turn around. I don’t remember.

When we got back to College Station, we finally got to go to the Golden Corral. It was great. They had an ice cream machine and everything. They even had an Icee machine. I got an Icee, and it was so delicious. It made the day better.

Oh, well, bye.

Back to School Supply Drive: Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Youth Club

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Youth Club collected school supplies for the Back to School Supply Drive. Youth members are pictured displaying their collected donations.

I am so sad that summer is almost over. I feel like it just flew by. I am also kind of excited to start middle school. I’m going into sixth grade. It will be a big transition. The first day of school is in two weeks. I had a lot of fun at the beach and the pool this summer.

Today is the Lodge 47, Seaton youth outing at Jeremiah’s Italian Ice. I can’t wait to enjoy ice cream and Italian ice.

We just had the State Youth Showcase. I did nine out of the 11 categories, and also group and individual talent. I got two medals and a lot of cash. We also got to go to the water park, which was a lot of fun.

I got to go to my Mawmaw’s and Pawpaw’s house after the Showcase. I stayed there for five days. I had fun going to the Bluebell Ice Cream Museum, golfing, and more. It was really hot so we stayed indoors a lot. It has also been dry. I really want it to rain soon. See you next month.

Fraternally, Travis Ordogne, age 11 —SPJST—

Resolution of Sympathy

The Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister,

LILLIE ANNIE BALUSEK, 92, of Moulton, Texas, who passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. Funeral service was at 9 a.m., Monday July 3 at Czech Moravian Church in Vsetin. Reverend Dr. Mark Labaj officiated. Burial followed in Vsetin Cemetery.

She was born on August 15, 1930, to Joe and Hermina Trcalek Belicek, in Lavaca County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Czech Moravian Brethren Church of Vsetin, where she has been a member her entire life. She attended school in Breslau and graduated as the salutatorian of her class, then went to Blinn College.

Lillie married Joe Balusek on June 16, 1956, at Czech Moravian Brethren Church of Vsetin. She helped Joe farm and raise cattle in Hallettsville. Later, they moved to Yoakum, where Joe worked at the highway department, and she was a devoted mother and housewife. Joe and Lillie later moved to Bay City and Texas City with Joe’s employment and finally retired to their farm in Moulton.

Lillie enjoyed farm life, and she also had a very green thumb, growing a variety of flowers. She was an avid gardener. Her family was fond of her vegetables that she canned during spring and summer. She was a great cook and baked some amazing desserts. Her kolaches were enjoyed by many.

Lillie loved going to bingos, playing bunco in a local bunco group, and playing marbles and dominoes with family members. She enjoyed visiting family and friends and was known for her

beautiful smile. She adored her small dog, Margarita, who she spoiled. Margarita was a great companion for her because Margarita kept Lillie entertained.

Lillie was a member of several organizations during her life: Vsetin Christian Sisters; American Legion Auxiliary; VFW Auxiliary; Farm Bureau; FFA Buyers Club; 50-plus year member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville; and volunteer at local nursing homes with bingos and church services.

Lillie was preceded in death by husband Joe; parents; sister Wilelmina Prasek; and brothers Joe, Willie, Walter, Jerome, and Julius Balicek.

Lillie is survived by daughter Susan Siptak and husband Joe; son Glenn Balusek and wife Robyn; sister-in-law Theresa Belicek; grandchildren Adam Siptak (Amanda), Joshua Siptak (Melissa), Mark Siptak (Lauren), Sarah Brashear (Jeff), Lee Balusek, Madelyn Balusek, Brent Hill, and Meagan Harden; 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Czech Moravian Brethren Church.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

Resolution of Sympathy

The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar send their condolences to the family of RAYMOND OTTO GRUNEWALD.

Raymond Otto Grunewald, 78, of Weimar, Texas, passed away on November 22, 2021, in Houston.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, November 30 at 10 a.m. at Weimar United Church of Christ in Weimar. Pastor Glen Schoeneberg officiated. Visitation was on November 30 at church from 8 to 10 a.m. Burial took place in Weimar Masonic Cemetery in Weimar.

Raymond was born on December 10, 1942, to Otto Karl Grunewald and Agnes Annie (Melnar) Grunewald in Schulenburg.

Raymond worked as a freight truck driver for many years for Herder Truck Lines.

He was a member of Weimar United Church of Christ.

Raymond looked forward to the weekends where he was always working on projects around the house. He loved to go dancing at New Bielau which is where he met his wife, Evelyn of 52 years. They were married on November 15, 1969 in Nada. There was sleet on the ground that year. They spent this year’s (2021) anniversary in the hospital after recovering from his surgery.

His favorite seasons were fall and winter. He enjoyed deer hunting with all his buddies, and he decorated his old No. 40 tractor and placed it the front yard for the yearly Christmas decorating contest. This past year, they were putting the lights on the wheels of the tractor and came to realize the back wheel was turning backwards instead of forward. They got a good laugh out of that one! He enjoyed going to barbecue in different cook-offs. It wasn’t so much about winning, but just sitting back with friends and family and having a good time. He also enjoyed trailriding where he perfected walking barefoot to the Bandera River to cool off.

He had a dog name Brutus that he

loved and enjoyed taking him to ride around town and walking through the neighborhood. He enjoyed cutting the grass, picking and peeling pecans, playing solitaire on the computer, and always going to all Weimar Wildcats and Lady Cats sporting events.

Raymond was a retired truck driver for MG’s, Herder’s and R&L Trucking for almost 38 years. He was on the road many hours a day, living 100 miles from the terminal. He said his favorite part of his day was being out among the people. He retired on December 30, 2010. Even though he retired from life on the road, he still enjoyed coming home and riding around town. Raymond was also a cancer survivor in 2007.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto Grunewald and Agnes Grunewald; brother Frank C. Grunewald and wife Marjorie; and brother-in-law Ronnie Guenther.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 52 years, Evelyn Grunewald; daughters Kimberly Elstner and husband Craig and Kelli Grunewald; sister Billie Faye Guenther; and grandchildren Addison Elstner, Avery Elstner, Cayden Wilson, and Carter Wilson.

Pallbearers were Brad Corliss, Rodney Corliss, John Guenther, Jason Oncken, Larry Stolar, and Tony Stolar. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren, Addison Elstner, Avery Elstner, Cayden Wilson, and Carter Wilson.

Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.

In Memory of Bennie J. Matusek

Bennie J. Matusek received his eternal reward on Saturday, July 29, 2023. Visitation was Tuesday, August 8 at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park. Graveside service was at 11:30 a.m. at Grand View Funeral Home Bethany Cemetery in Pasadena.

Bennie was born on January 24, 1930, to Anton Louis and Mary Kubena Matusek on the family farm and ranch where he grew up in Hungerford, Texas. He was the seventh of eight children. On the farm, he learned the value of hard work and discipline.

Bennie was the first person in his family to go to college. He attended Texas A&M College, and from that point on, there was maroon blood in the family. With little money for school, he would sweep the floor of Sbisa Dining Hall for a meal. On the weekends, Bennie would hitchhike to/from the farm in Hungerford to fill up on his mom’s home cooking. She would send him back to A&M with a jar full of bacon to tide him over. Bennie graduated in 1952 with a degree in agricultural education.

After graduation, Bennie enlisted in the Army as a private, was honorably discharged two years later as a 2nd Lieutenant, but continued for the next several years in the Army Reserve as a 1st Lieutenant.

Bennie began his professional career in 1954 at Shell Chemical in Deer Park, starting as a lab assistant, and later specializing in industrial hygiene where he

tested refinery air samples, attended fireman training school, and taught safety classes to refinery workers. Bennie retired in 1991 at 61 years of age, after 37 years of employment.

Bennie was proud of his Czech heritage. He loved all things Czech – the work ethic, the people, the food, and the music. Bennie and Barbara and their kids could often be found at Czech festivals and SPJST dancehalls. Bennie was a 75-year member of SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena.

Bennie met his wife of 62 years, Barbara, at the Bill Mraz Dance Hall in Houston. They traveled to Czechoslovakia several times where they visited his distant cousins.

Bennie volunteered in the community in many ways. He was a charter member of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church which was established in 1965. The church was a big part of Bennie’s life, and he served as a Eucharistic minister, was a member of the Men’s Club, and served in many other capacities. Bennie served on the Deer Park High School Orchestra Booster Club as president and committee leader. All three of Bennie’s sons achieved Eagle Scout. Bennie volunteered in the scout troop, helping with meetings, campouts, and Eagle projects. He hiked Philmont twice, the second time when he was 61. Bennie served on the City of Deer Park Planning and Zoning Commission for 18 years and the Shell Adopt-a-School Committee for seven years.

Bennie’s acting career spanned two movies which were filmed in Houston. He played a lieutenant in Terms of Endearment, and he was also in Tin Cup as part of the golf crowd.

Bennie is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara Dill Matusek of Deer Park; daughter Donna Pruitt and husband Kyle of Katy; daughter Teri Broussard and husband Dane of Wylie; son Bennie Matusek and wife Lucy of Pearland; son Ed Matusek of Spartanburg, South Carolina; son John Matusek and wife Danielle of Deer Park; grandchildren Ashley Rice and husband Justin, Matthew Barton, Adam Broussard and wife Anna, Crispin Matusek, Hayley Matusek, Addison Matusek, and Nathan Matusek; and great-grandchildren Henry, Lexi, Philip, and Stephen Rice.

Donations in Bennie’s memory can be made to The Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org) or to the charity of your choice. —SPJST—

CESAT announces Czech language classes for high school, university, and adult students

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) is pleased to inform you of the Czech language courses that are offered through Blinn College. CZEC 1471 (Beginning Czech I), CZEC 1472 (Beginning Czech II) , CZEC 1371 (Intermediate Czech I), CZEC 1372 (Intermediate Czech II), and advanced conversational Czech are offered at Blinn College via the internet. You can study Czech from the comfort of home. High school students may take the courses for dual credit. Dual credit classes are taken by high school students for high school foreign language credit as well as transferable university credit.

Because of the rich Czech heritage in Texas, learning the Czech language is particularly appealing to students and adults. It provides an opportunity for students of Czech descent to maintain their heritage and culture that is interwoven in the settlement and growth of many communities in Texas. It may also provide an additional language for students who are interested in majoring in international business or European studies.

Due to scholarships offered by CESAT, a high school student can earn 14 hours of transferable university credit for free.

The instructor of the course uses distance learning technology so that students can take the course live online on their high school campus using a computer equipped with a microphone and headset. In the Fall 2023 semester, the course will be offered live online Monday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m.

until 8:50 a.m. for beginning Czech and intermediate Czech from 8:55 to 9:40 a.m. To defray the cost of the course, CESAT and other Texas Czech organizations have provided funds so that scholarships are available for students enrolling in the Czech language courses.

Adults may also take these classes for either university credit as a continuing education class.

Shannon Williford who serves as the Director for Dual Credit Programs at Blinn College can assist you in getting your students registered for the university or dual credit course. Her email is Shannon.Williford@blinn.edu or telephone 979-209-8218.

Loraine Orellana, who serves as Coordinator of Distance and Community Education at the Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus, can register you for the continuing education class. Ms. Orellana’s phone number is 979-743- 5237, and her email is lorellana@blinn.edu.

Please contact me with any questions about the Czech language program offered at Blinn College by sending an email to Polasek29@gmail.com. CESAT hopes that you will encourage students to take advantage of this wonderful learning opportunity!
