While Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth member Diego Valdez is great, he is not “Diego the Great” as we inadvertently identified on page 1 of the November 28, 2022, Vestnik. The pictured magician “Diego the Great” is actually Diego Salinas from San Antonio. The Vestnik regrets the error. It has been correctly on the online version at issuu.com/spjst/docs/vestnik_2022.11. 28

SPJST increases payout rate for Lodge Management Fund

We have good news for lodges that have funds in the Lodge Management Fund.

The good news is that the SPJST Executive Committee increased the interest rate for the Lodge Management Fund from 3.25 percent to 4 percent, effective December 1, 2022. This increase is made possible by the good performance of our investments. The next consideration of interest rates will take place in the Executive Committee meeting in January.

For those lodges having funds invested in lesser rates in CDs or other sources, we encourage you to open a Lodge Management Fund account. Periodic withdrawals can be made without any penalty on the request of two designated officers. Call if you have any questions.

Have a happy, healthy Holiday Season.

SPJST raises annuity interest rates

SPJST’s sustained increase in investment returns has enabled the Society to increase payout rates on all annuities paying 3 percent to a new rate of 3.25 percent, effective November 1, 2022. If the trend we have enjoyed in investments continues, the Executive Committee may consider further adjustments in our payout rates. All other annuity rates were also increased.

The payout rates on new deposits have also been increased and are shown on below.

mendous. Our rates are very competitive, actually exceeding many financial institutions and fraternals. We are blessed with three quality territory managers with great qualifications. I am looking for some excellent performance from them.

What more can we say about our AQS investment partners and the job they have done for us? Our investment income continues to grow in a time when things are very difficult. Being progressive minded and innovative without increasing risks is definitely in our favor. Many thanks for all involved in making AQS as our investment advisors. Our only problem is that it took too long for us to make this move.

The changes we are making regarding our lodge enhancement program need to be carefully studied without making a decision too fast. We must make sure our lodges become more involved in community service and become a center of the community in which they exist. This is all a part of a non-profit fraternal organization. Many of our members are going to have to make a change in their thinking and acting and do more than just meet for the sake of meeting. Many lodges are very active, and for this, I am grateful. More lodges need to join in this mode and reach out to get more members of their lodge involved in helping the lodge grow and become active. Without activity, there is no growth. Everyone needs to step up and become more involved to support and help an organization which must do these things or the big question will be, “What will happen next?”

As far as our revitalization of the Youth Program, more tweaking needs to be made to involve our DYCs as the local leaders of our youth along with dedicated youth leaders with creativity and imagination to get our kids involved. Too much central control can be detrimental. Let us be careful and empower more individuals to do their part and feel they are important. Delegation of power is much more successful than trying to take power away. We all must feel that we are important to make a program successful and to watch it grow.

I am so thankful for the innovative moves made by SPJST to move us into the 21st century in terms of Home Office performance and overall leadership philosophy.

Change is difficult, but no changes and upgrades will be detrimental.

We had another good meeting. I would like to thank Melanie and Frank for the work they are doing with the lodges and youth clubs. Everyone is working together, and it shows. Every department is very important to SPJST. We still have some challenges and some tough decisions ahead of us. We need to stay focused on what is best for SPJST. We need new members to keep us going so it is important as directors to visit with the agents, ask questions, and maybe get some ideas from the agents, too.

I believe 2023 is going to be another good year.

The board is keeping a very close eye on interest rates. Twenty-two years ago in 2000, we saw interest rates at 8.3 percent. Will we hit those rates again? We want to take care of our members and ensure SPJST annuities are very competitive. The average American has already lost 25 percent of their 401(k) in 2022. An annuity offers a safer place for your money. Inflation is also on everyone’s mind. Since 1980, we have seen a 220 percent CPI increase, but college tuition has increased 1,180 percent. Do we see that same increase in wages for college graduates?

In 1980, average salary was $20,000; and in 2021, it was $44,000. Going to see grandma now costs double for gas than what it did two years ago. The next two years are going to be tough, but there will be opportunities. The board with input from our investment advisors and in discussion in our recent planning meeting is ready to meet the challenges ahead of SPJST. The board is looking at the numbers and doing the analytics to keep SPJST thriving.

In La Grange on October 15, SPJST celebrated 125 years. That’s two world wars, the great depression, many recessions, and other turmoil in our nation’s history that SPJST has withstood the test of time. We are a fraternal society, and any input you as a member may have is welcomed.

I want to give a big thank you to my fellow board members and officers for making this such a productive meeting these past two days. I also want to thank everyone for such a great and well-attended anniversary celebration this past weekend in La Grange! Here’s to the next 125 years for SPJST!

Congratulations to those staff members who were recognized for their many years of service. You and the job you do each and every day is so important and very much appreciated!

There is a lot of work still to be done, but I am confident that in these uncertain economic times that we as board members, along with AQS - our financial advisors - and all members, can work together to remain a strong fraternal insurance company.

Bob and Polly had three children - John, Roxy, and Wendy. They had five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren, who were the light of his life! He always looked forward to seeing them and had a huge smile on his face when they came around. Bob was an avid hunter and fisher. He loved bowling and playing dominoes with his father-in-law, Joe. They won many tournaments together.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his inlaws, Joe and Pauline Pavliska; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Pavliska Bielefeld and Rebecca “Susan” Pavliska Blubaugh; and daughter-in-law April (Isom) Bayer.

Remembering Honorary District Seven Director Bob Bayer

† I had the privilege of serving on the board with Bob well over 30 years.

I knew him well enough to say that he was truly dedicated to SPJST and living up to being a good director. He was a fraternalist in deed and in heart.

† Bob had an eagle eye on details of everything at SPJST. He could foresee problems in the future with his years of experience. He always wanted to know what’s best for members and was famous for saying, “What’s next?” With so many SPJST accomplishments, they are too numerous to mention. I don’t want to recite his impressive resume, but Bob was well accomplished with SPJST and his life. Bob was a good visionary person who could foresee any complications in an item the board would move to approve. He was passionate in matters involving SPJST – especially the youth. He was always advising the board on what he thought was right. Bob would not let his age or health hamper him. He wanted to continue his work vibrantly with SPJST as long as he could. Bob had decades of knowledge about SPJST. I can still see Bob in his chair at our board meetings hitting his fist on the table to make a point.

It was an honor to know and work with Bob. I hope to emulate him and his dedication to SPJST. I cherish him telling me that he thought of me as one of the better board members to come through. A quote comes to mind when I think of Bob:

“The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive.”

Bob frequently requested detailed information about our operation. I well remember the requests he made to stay on top of things and to be informed on a matter before he took a position. And then, we remember his famous words, “What’s next,” when a serious problem came up.

He took great pride in his longevity on the board and relied on his many years of experience to make decisions. I truly enjoyed serving with him. We owe a sense of gratitude to him for his many years of service to SPJST in many capacities.

My heartfelt sympathy to his loving wife Polly and to John, Roxanne, and Wendy, and the rest of the family.

† SPJST has lost a member with a great loyalty to the organization. “What’s next?” is the famous question Brother Bob would always ask at nearly every meeting. I don’t think you can find anyone more devoted to an organization than Bob was. Many times, his passion would aggravate others because of his questioning of things that were taking place. Many felt he was a bit too abrasive, but this is who he was. He never meant to come across as abrasive. It was just that he wanted to know.

I will miss the times he and I spent on the phone discussing issues and working on finding solutions to issues we were facing. Many people never were able to get to know the real Bob. Always wanting the best for what we needed to do was what he wanted. I respected him to the fullest – even though we did not see eye to eye on things, but the friendship which developed was priceless. One thing for certain is that you never wondered how he felt or where he stood on any issue. He spared no words.

His family is wonderful, and I know he cared about them. He was always talking with me about the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was very proud of them.

May our departed member rest in peace.

† My sincere thoughts, prayers, and sympathy to Polly and all of the family and extended family. Bob was an integral part of the SPJST organization for many years. I was privileged to work with Bob in two different areas over a period of 20 years. There were a number of years from 2001 to 2011, I worked as State Field Representative for District Seven. I strived hard for him to be proud of my work with the agents. Then from 2012 to 2020, we served as district directors on the SPJST Supreme Lodge Board. Since I was District Six Director and he was District Seven Director, he sat on my direct right side at board meetings. I appreciated his passion and love for SPJST. Rest in peace, Bob. You will be missed and always have a place in our SPJST hearts.

Remembering Honorary District Seven Director Bob Bayer August

9, 1939 - November 26, 2022

† My thoughts and our prayers are with Brother Bayer’s family during this time of loss. Brother Bob and I worked together in varying capacities for close to 30 years, and I considered him a friend and ally in matters of Society business – financial as well as fraternal.

† My sincere sympathy goes to the Bayer family for their loss. Bob was an inspiration to me and the entire board of directors. He always questioned all issues we were voting on. He thought of things that I would have never thought of. I always admired him - not only for his guidance, but for Bob himself. He has been missed greatly since he left the board.

Rest in peace, my friend!

I will always remember Brother Bob for his determination both in and outside the boardroom – his meticulous reviews of operating statements, communication, and documentation. In that regard, he was tireless in his efforts to make the organization better.

But you know, Brother Bob also had a joyous and playful side! I vividly recall the lighthearted visit that we paid to the office of Sons of Hermann President Leroy Muehlstein in San Antonio in the fall 2004 that led to the first SPJST/Sons of Hermann Bowling Tournament which evolved – after three years – into the Fraternal Alliance of Texas Bowling Tournament, bringing together players from all of the Texas domiciled fraternal organizations, including SPJST, Sons of Hermann, KJT, KJZT, and Catholic Life. On that same note, Brother Bob was a great collaborator and supporter of the first Corpus Christi Getaway Weekend in 2007 and every subsequent event for the next 13 years. That was always a fun and family-oriented end-ofsummer event – and a great party for Bob – who was able to celebrate his birthday with his loving family and many friends from around the state!

Brother Bob will be dearly missed . . . May honor be given to his memory now and forever.

† Bob was the one who inspired me to run for District Seven Director. He really encouraged me with kind words of support and inspiration, and for those kind words, I am so grateful! I will definitely miss him at our meetings at Lodge 107, Floresville and in District Seven! May he rest in eternal peace.

† During my first board meeting as State Youth Director, I asked for additional funding for youth activities. Most of the directors were receptive and willing to give me a chance. Except Bob. He pounded his fist on the table, and firmly remarked, “Show me the numbers, and we will show you the money.” That was Brother Bob’s way of ensuring that I would do my best to grow the youth program.

Brother Bob lived and breathed SPJST. He loved SPJST. I will miss his smile, infectious laugh, guidance, and wisdom. By the way, I honored his challenge, increased the youth numbers, and received additional program funding. Thanks for your mentorship, Bob.

Always remember: Revelation 22:21 ~ May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

May all the Blessings of our Savior reign Peace and Joy upon you and your families!

From the Desk of

It’s Your Life

Hope, Joy, Faith, and Peace

Amen!

Revelation 22:21 ~ May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Now we come to the end of the year. And while I will depart slightly from the normal Christmas message formula, I hope it will be one that will make 2023 your best year yet.

We are will into the season of Advent as we prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It is a season of family and friends. A season of cheer and celebration. A season of favorite food and aromas. A season of bright colors and festive songs.

Have you ever noticed that the season of hope, faith, joy, and peace comes at the darkest time of the year?

As we approach Christmas day, the days get shorter, and the nights get longer. And while you may not experience a chill in the air during our Texas winter, it is nonetheless much cooler than it was just a few weeks prior. The trees lose their leaves, grass fades to a grayish brown and plants lose their color. Winter can be a period of cold, miserable darkness. It makes many want to just go inside, pour a hot beverage, get comfy, binge watch your favorite television show, and just wait until summer comes again.

In addition, December can be a month of utter chaos. It’s amazing that we ever get any business done this month. There are parties to attend . . . and presents to buy … and to wrap . . . and to pay for . . . all after fighting the crowd at the malls . . . and trees to decorate . . . and cookies to bake . . . and travel arrangements to be made . . . and airport security lines to be navigated.

By the time New Year’s Day arrives,

it’s time for a rest. (Or maybe a football game or six.) I wonder if the three wise men had reserved parking for their camels at the mall when they purchased gold, frankincense, and myrrh?

Does it seem paradoxical that we celebrate the birth of a baby, born more than two millennia ago, juxtaposed against the backdrop of this month of gloom and chaos?

That is the nature of God.

When the distractions of life get in the way of glorifying Him. When life becomes cold and miserable, and you feel like seeking shelter in your safe place. When it seems as though nothing is going the way you planned. When life is at its darkest, is when God delivers to you a baby; who to the world was, and is, and is to be the wonderful counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting father, the prince of peace, the King of kings and the Lord of lords. When life is at its darkest, is when God delivers to you a season of hope, faith, joy, and peace.

I love symmetry.

Today, we will focus on the last verse of the Bible, found in Revelation. I chose this verse, not only for symmetry sake, but also because it sums up the message that I would like you to remember for not only this month, but for next year and beyond. If you take away no other message this year, make it this one.

You see, just like our lives, Revelation is filled with scary, horrible, even macabre events. But, at just the right time, God sends a Messiah to reign over the universe. It’s a wonderful ending to the story, to be sure.

And as you go out into the world today and the rest of the month, do not let life’s events cause anxiety and stress. Rather, prepare your hearts and minds and know that your savior is nearby.

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.”

Calvin Coolidge

Lodge 6, Cottonwood recognizes Barbara Hykel, Milton Peterson

Lodge 6, Cottonwood held its December meeting with 19 adults, nine youth, and one guest present. Youth member Quinlan Dobecka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST pledge. Monthly reports from Secretary Sister Barbara Hykel and Treasurer Sister Peggy Dobecka were presented and approved as read, by the members. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Sister Jeanette Beseda reported on Home Office activities, the reporting of fraternal hours, and how that is reported to maintain our tax exemption status. Sister Beseda also spoke about the opportunities to increase volunteerism in our local community.

Youth Leader Sister Peggy Dobecka gave an update on the youth club activities. The youth decorated the hall this week for the Christmas party. Youth club raffle had many donations, and Sister Dobecka thanked everyone. The proceeds from the raffle will be given to the local chapter of Toys for Tots.

Sunshine committee report - Sister Hykel reported get well cards were sent to Selby Holder and Pam Urbanovsky. Brother James Nemec provided names of three new SPJST insurance applicants. These three youth members, Paeyton Brown, Presley Meadows, and Parker Meadows, were approved by the membership.

President Brother Don Urbanovsky announced the charitable contribution committee will now be led by Sister Kim Seith. Sister Seith will select additional members for that committee.

Brother Urbanovsky suggested we will decide on details for our volunteer

appreciation dinner in the January meeting. There was no recent trustee meeting to report on, and the next could be held in January before the regular lodge meeting. Sister Beseda suggested we also complete the lodge account audits before or after the next meeting.

December birthdays were Amber Perez, Madison Magouirk, Cassandra Perez, and Ella Maguire. Following the meeting, everyone enjoyed fellowship.

District Three Director John Engelke presented recognition of service plaques. Sister Barbara Hykel was recognized for her 50-plus years of service as our lodge secretary. Wow! That’s amazing! A plaque to Milton Peterson for his 16 years of service as President of Lodge 6 was presented to his wife, Sister Irene Peterson, and the Peterson family. Best wishes to Brother Milton Peterson as he is progressing.

Progressive door prize name drawn was Patrick Halamik, who was not present. The attendance door prizes were awarded to Courtney Maguire, Peggy Dobecka, and Amber Halbert.

Next Meeting—January 8

The next meeting will be Sunday, January 8, 2023, at 2 p.m. There will be a 12 noon lunch prior to the meeting. Come fellowship with us.

I am posting that Lodge 18 is having a Christmas dance on Sunday, December 18 with Glen Collins. So this is your chance to have a dancing Christmas!

Czech Christmas Traditions

Czechs and Slovaks get a good start on Christmas with a traditional house cleaning at the beginning of December. This is not ordinary house cleaning, but a week-long effort.

The Christmas holiday season officially begins with Saint Nicholas Day. This marks the start of baking Vanocni Cukrovi (Christmas candies and sweets). Each family has its special goodies to share with other families and friends. Part of the holiday includes visiting friends and celebrating together. It is customary for those who had quarreled during the year to forgive each other publicly.

A tree is bought, secretly hidden away; no one is allowed to see it until after dinner on December 24. Only the head of the household trims the tree,

done on Christmas Eve morning, and only he or she can see the tree until that magic moment when Jezisek - the Christ child - arrives, which always happens after dinner.

The Christmas tree is decorated with handmade ornaments using walnut shells wrapped in colored paper or gilded. Some use eggshells decorated to look like fish or angels. Colored pin wheels resembling snowflakes and stars are hung by a thread. A small crèche is placed at the base of the tree. Gifts are put under the tree before 6 p.m. in great secrecy.

On December 23, people go out and buy the traditional Christmas carp for dinner. Several days earlier, huge wooden barrels appeared in the cities with live carp swimming around in them. The buyer points to the fish he or she wants, and the fun of trying to catch it begins. Most often, the carp is taken home alive and allowed to swim in the family bathtub until Christmas Eve morning. Best cuts of the carp are covered with flour, dipped in egg, covered with bread crumbs, and fried. Lesser cuts are baked with dried prunes and served with dum-

plings mixed with butter-fried cubes of bread. Some carp is made in plain gelatin as Rosol and served cold as salad. The

head and tail are wrapped in white cloth, boiled, and the stock is made into soup with vegetables and served with croutons.

There was caroling in the streets and homes on Christmas. Sometimes the carolers carried miniature Bethlehem scenes along. It was customary to invite them in for a glass of wine and vanocka, a sweet bread made with nuts, raisins, and candied fruit. There is much dancing and eating after the fasting which ends on Christmas Eve. Sometimes little boys dressed as The Three Kings go out singing for treats.

Dinner begins at 6 p.m.with members of the family standing and praying together, and then when the mother gives the signal, they all sit down at the same time to dinner and no one is allowed to get up - not matter what! They may share oplatky and honey before the meal. Christmas Eve supper might include pearl barley soup with mushrooms, carp, potato salad, fruits, and decorated cookies. In some families, there is a custom of putting a small coin under each person’s plate to symbolize wealth in the coming year, and that coin is carried around for good luck. When dinner is over, they all stand at the same time and wish each other a Joyous ChristmasStastne a Vesele Vanoce. Then they embrace and finally rush to the tree, and gifts are distributed and opened. A quiet evening is spent until Midnight Mass.

Sometimes the children slept on a bedding of straw on the floor under a table or the Christmas tree. This custom allowed them to take part in the Lord’s poor and humble birth.

Christmas dinner might consist of giblet soup with noodles, roast goose with dumplings and kraut, braided coffee cake, kolace, fruit, nuts, and coffee. Some games were played. One is the placing of tiny lit candles into nutshells and floating them in a tub or water; the player whose candle burns the longest is the winner. many other things to do. Also, candles had to be fastened to the tree branches, to be lit in the evening and give Christmas Eve an even greater sense of magic.

The whole family would be finishing up their final preparations before the Christmas feasts, which were just beginning on Christmas Eve at nightfall. The table was covered with a white tablecloth and the legs were wreathed in garlands, so there’d be no thieves stealing from the fields. Under the table was put a bowl of grain, and on it, a bowl of garlic. Garlic was believed by all Slavs from ancient times to have special powers of strengthening and protection. At that time, garlic was always present at Christmas in the Czech Lands and used to be as important a part of Christmas as the tree and sweets are today. Besides garlic, the cross and the candlestick with a candle stood for the sanctity of Candlemas. The mother

Traditional Czech Christmas Eve Menu and Customs

It was once the custom to fast for the whole day on Christmas Eve, for only the person who didn’t eat until Christmas Eve dinner would be able to see the golden pig on the wall that evening. That morning, the Christmas tree would have been decorated - mostly with red apples, walnuts, gingerbread, and other sweets,

left, then that meant that someone would arrive in the family. If one was missing, then in the next year, someone would die. Then all the other courses followed, which that evening were more than usual, for it was believed that the more courses there were, the more grain there would be in the field.

The traditional Czech Christmas Eve menu had different forms in different regions. In some places, the bread was followed by soup, most often mushroom, but a traditional Christmas Eve course everywhere was kuba, which was prepared from grouts, wild mushrooms, and garlic. Like garlic and honey, mushrooms also have a special position in Christmas. According to old myths, they are ascribed a heavenly origin. Another part of the feast were peas, which were prepared in the Old Czech style - sweetly, sprinkled with sugar and gingerbread.

At the end, desserts were passed around, combined with fruit, which unlike today were dried: apples, pears, plums, and nuts. Traditional Christmas desserts were strudels and vanocka, a special Christmas bread. From the previous list, it’s clear that the abstinence that ruled the period of Advent gave way on Christmas Eve to plenty.

After finishing dinner, no one got up

from the table quite yet. The father first took a walnut and an apple from a bowl in the center of the table. If the nut was rotten when cracked open, it was an omen of sickness, or even death. But everything could still be saved by the apple; if a star was revealed when it was split in half, this foretold health and long life. Not so fortunate was if the cross was discovered in the middle of the apple. As soon as the man of the house had read his fortune, the process was repeated by all present, from oldest to youngest.

After dinner was finished, everyone tried to stand up from the table at the same time, for it was believed that whoever stood up first would die within a year. The leftovers were then taken by the father out to the livestock. The poultry received a different treat - peas or poppy seeds so they’d lay plenty of eggs. The rooster, gander, and dog got garlic in their food so they would be as sharp as they should be in the next year.

With dinner over, came the time that children then and now looked forward to most: opening the presents left under the tree by Baby Jesus. After this, came time for another customary practice: A very common custom even to the present day, the floating of little boats made of nutshells on water. A bowl of water was set

on the table and everyone put in their half-shell boat, in which was fixed a burning candle. The fortune of each boatowner was read from the fate of their craft. If the boat made it across the bowl, then a long life lay ahead for the boat’s

owner. If it sank, then something less pleasant lay in wait for the unlucky captain.

There was another custom connected with walnuts. After dinner, three nuts were cracked open and their insides removed. The first walnut shell was refilled with dirt, the second with a little piece of bread, and the third with money. The shells were then stuck back together and placed back among the other ones. At midnight, everyone took a walnut from the bowl on the table; if someone got the nut with the dirt inside, then poverty awaited them. Getting the nut with bread foretold a comfortable life, and the one with money inside naturally was a prophesy of great wealth.

Other customs were practiced in particular by girls eager to marry. One way they could look into what the future had in store was throwing their shoes over their heads. If the toes pointed to the door, then the parents knew to get a wedding dress ready, for the girl would be married within the next year. If, on the other hand, the toes of her shoe pointed back into the room, then their daughter had another year to wait.

If a girl discovered by her shoes that she had to wait for her wedding and wanted to know for how long she had to wait, she had to give up a strand of her hair. On this hair she would tie a ring and hold it as close to a glass as she could. The number of times that the ring clinked

against the glass before it settled was the number of years she had to wait.

A girl curious about the physical make-up of her future husband could find out by pulling wood - closing her eyes and taking a piece of wood out of a pile. The shape of this piece of wood would reveal to her how well-built, bent, slim, or fat the future partner held for her would be. This fortune could also be read by younger girls, who wanted to know about their future husbands.

Single girls could attempt to get an even better idea of what their future betrothed would be like. All she had to do was to take three slips of paper with the names of her probable partners and tie them up in handkerchiefs so that not a bit stuck out. Then she tied up a fourth handkerchief and put them all under her pillow on Christmas Eve. On the morning of God’s Feast (Christmas Day), she would choose one of the hankies and untie it. If it was empty, then she was never going to marry. This gloomy fate could still be averted, however, if she put the three slips of paper with the names into three dumplings, which were cooked for the Christmas Day feast. The husband fate held for her would then be revealed by the first of the dumplings cut open.

Christmas Eve ended with Midnight Mass, which was held in every church. In some regions, Christmas plays were also part of the Mass, which was followed in any case with caroling. On Christmas Eve and God’s Feast - December 25 - people wouldn’t play cards, go to the pub, or visit relatives. This had to wait until Saint Stephen’s Day - December 26 - when the dancing parties and the period of merry-making and caroling began.

Resolution of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, MILTON MYNAR, who passed away on October 19, 2022, at the age of 83.

Milton was born on July 14, 1939, to Joe and Lillie Schumacher Mynar in the Second Creek Community of Burleson County. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1958. He married the love of his life, Eleanora Vavra, on April 4, 1964, at Frenstat Holy Rosary Catholic Church and enjoyed 58 years of marriage.

Milton and Eleanora were blessed with three daughters. He loved being a granddad to his four grandchildren and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling with Eleanora and shared trips with the DeMottier and Matus families, JD and Carolyn, and gambling with brothers-inlaw JD and James.

Milton was employed for 48 years serving as a parts man for the Chevrolet dealership in Caldwell. Even through the multiple ownerships of the company, he remained a dedicated and loyal employee. He retired from Caldwell Country Chevrolet on January 31, 2012.

Everyone who knew Milton knew he was an avid Caldwell Hornet football fan and a fan of all sports. In his younger years, he never missed a Friday night football game with the guys, and Friday night football took on a special meaning when he watched his two grandsons take the field as Caldwell Hornets. Nothing matched his love of the Hornets except for his love of the Texas Longhorns. Milton enjoyed attending games in Austin and watching them on television.

Milton served his community as a member of the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department; SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor; and Burleson County Czech Heritage Society. He was a faithful servant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Usher Club, Burleson County Knights of Columbus Council 6366, and KJT.

He is survived by wife Eleanor; daughters Paula McMillan and husband Rob, Debbie Tittle and husband Dusty, and Kim Mynar; and grandchildren Brahm and Brianna McMillan and Wade and Garret Tittle.

Funeral service was Tuesday, October 25 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caldwell. Burial followed in the church’s cemetery.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Resolution of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, EDWIN LOUIS HLAVATY, who passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the age of 90.

He was born on December 20, 1931, to Walter and Matilda Hlavaty in the Cooks Point community.

Edwin was one of 40 graduates of Caldwell High School in 1952. From 1955 to 1956, he served in the United States Army. He was asked to attend the officer’s training school which required him to extend his tour of duty. He declined the offer and completed basic training. When his training was complete, he was transferred to European Command and stationed in Germany where he served as Communication Chief. Edwin won top marksman in small arms in the 73rd Unit in 1956 in which he served.

After being honorably discharged, he moved back to Texas to work for the highway department in Bryan. Edwin was the soil testing specialist for TXDOT then transferred to the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Edwin spent the last 13 years of his career working in air-conditioning and refrigeration and heating repair and maintenance. After suffering a work in-

jury in 1983, he retired to the Cooks Point community to care for his mother.

He enjoyed planting various fruit trees and gardening in his later years, and he shared his harvest with friends and family. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and traveling. He travelled to both Europe and Central and South America. He represented the State of Texas in the World Tour Fair and Brno, Czech Republic.

He was a lifetime member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor and Texas Czech Genealogical Society. He supported the Czech Center Museum Houston and Burleson County Czech Heritage Society.

Edwin was a longtime member of Caldwell Brethren Church early in his life and served as a Sunday school teacher, superintendent, on the board of elders, and as chairman. In 2003, he joined First Presbyterian Church in Bryan.

A memorial service was held on June 22 in the chapel of Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell. May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Tichá noc, svata noc - Silent Night, Holy Night

3. Tichá noc, svatá noc! Boží láska, si s úsměvem hrá zpod zlaté řasy k nám vyzírá, že nám až srdéčko plá, vstříc mu vděčně plá, vstříc mu vděčně plá,

Dear SPJST, I’m so ready for the Christmas break. I’m hoping to work some and go hunting lots.

Lodge 49, Rowena youth attends Christmas party

Dear SPJST,

How to make Christmas Eve special for kids

Christmas Eve is viewed differently by different people, even those who live under the same Santa-ready roof. Adults may see Christmas Eve as crunch time when they must prepare food for the next day or set up presents for their children to open in the morning. Children, on the other hand, are focused on Santa’s visit and little else.

Parents naturally want to make Christmastime as special as possible for their children, and that may involve ensuring that Christmas Eve is just as memorable as Christmas Day. The following are some ways to impart more magic into Christmas Eve celebrations.

Bake fresh cookies

Children like to leave out a plate of cookies and a glass of milk for Santa. That makes Christmas Eve a perfect time to whip up a fresh batch of cookies. Explore different recipes to come up with a unique offering each year.

Read a Christmas story

Watching television or looking at a tablet or mobile phone before bed can be too stimulating when it's time for children to wind down for bed. Choose a holiday tale or tales that can be read as a Christmas Eve bedtime story. Reciting the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas (‘Twas the Night Before Christmas)” is a great way to set the Christmas Eve mood.

Make a batch of ‘reindeer dust’

Why should Santa’s reindeer be left out when it comes to receiving treats? Reindeer dust, made from a combination of oatmeal, rice cereal, dried fruits, and glitter (if desired), is purported to attract Santa’s reindeer and provide them a nibble at the same time. Plus, it’s generally safe for other animals in the yard to eat.

Go caroling

Caroling may not be the norm, but some families may want to revive it. Close-knit communities can organize family-centric caroling opportunities and roam the cul-de-sacs and other pedestrian-friendly areas singing popular songs.

“This is my first book,” Kuykendall said. “I’ve always enjoyed writing, and I have written articles for the diocese’s newspaper and the Catholic Southwest Culture & History Journal.”

“I started working on Faith & Perseverance about three years ago,” he said. “I finished it in October.”

“Although the Diocese of Austin has only been in existence for about 75 years, this book goes back to 1745 to the Missions between Cameron and Rockdale.”

The missions — Candelaria, San Ildefonso, and San Xavier — were in existence for 10 years and were sizable, similar to the famous missions in San Antonio. Unfortunately, not much remains of the structures.

“When the Diocese of Austin started, it spread over 30 counties,” Kuykendall said. “Now it covers 25 counties and runs from Brenham on the east to

Mason on the west, and from San Marcos to the city of West. It includes Temple, Killeen, Waco, and Austin.”

“There are 123 Catholic churches in the Diocese, but the book doesn’t detail individual churches,” he said. “It’s more

The Guardian Angel No. OR-203 - $22

In ancient times, Saint Nicholas, the forbearer of Santa Claus, was known as a kind benevolent man and was known for performing miracles. He was always ready to help anyone in need and he became the patron saint of children. He rode into town on December 6, Saint Nicholas’ Day, and the holiday season of celebration began. His legend lives on today, as Americans, who have emigrated from European countries, blend their beliefs and customs surrounding the Christmas holidays as they celebrate Santa Claus. The American Santa Claus embodies the innocence and delight of childhood as he delivers gifts and treats for children everywhere. Legend says that he and his elves work all year, building toys and games. On Christmas Eve, he leaves the North Pole and flies all around the world in a sleigh, delivering gifts. There are many Christmas traditions in the world today. One thing is for sure: This American patron saint of children certainly brings joy and delight to all during the holiday season.

The Guardian Angel No. OR-203 - $22

Angels symbolize purity, peace, and love and are a comforting presence for all of us. Angels announced the news of the birth of Jesus, who was God’s gift for all the people of the world. Our guardian angels help to keep each of us on the right path in life, guiding us through life’s many experiences and uncertainties.

The Tradition of the Czech Flag No. TFG22 - $7

The Czech Flag ornament is one that is cherished by Czechs all over the world. The colors, red, white, and blue are both symbolic and historic. White is the traditional color of Bohemia and represents the sky. Moravia is symbolized by the color red which also represents the blood shed for the freedom of the state. Blue is the traditional color of Slovakia.

The Three Wise Men No. C19 - Set of 3 - $39

Traditional nativity scenes usually include the three wise men who visited Jesus after his birth, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The wise men were sent to find Jesus, at the request of King Herod. They followed the star until it stopped over the place where the Child lay. They were overwhelmed with joy. They knelt down, paying Him homage, and gave Him their gifts. They then returned to their homes in the east by a different route. These three wise men, handcrafted in glass in the Czech Republic, are adorned with regal robes of intense, deep royal colors, accented by gold.
