Thanks for the roof that’s over my head; Thanks for supplying my daily bread. Thank You for laughter and thanks for tears: Each has its purpose in life’s span of years. Thank You for music that lifts the soul: Thank You for every blessing You dole. Thank You for leading when life seems dark. Thank You for air, sun, the moon and stars. the land of the free and home of the brave. Thank You for these, and many more. But mostly thanks for being my Lord. ~Loise Pinkerton Fritz

We as a lodge are very grateful for the healing hand of our Lord for Verna Mason as she has been declared cancerfree. What a blessing. Also, blessings on our youngest youth, who I guess we will have to call an adult now as he is in the United States Army—Logan Almonte. He is striving for his chosen profession. We all love him and miss him greatly.

Our lodge is so blessed that we are able to continue with the amazing contributions to more than 20 different organizations annually. It is an honor and a privilege to continue to be able to do this. It gives me joy to be able to compose the letter that accompanies these contributions to these various organizations each year. These organizations are as follows, and some of them have received a monthly donation as well, which is explained.

When we have a monthly meeting, if a member is a birthday recipient, they have the honor of choosing an organization to receive a monthly donation. Each monthly donation is $100, unless designated differently according to the situation.

Esther’s Safe Haven - $1,300 Tunnel 2 Towers - $1,200 Burleson Animal Shelter - $1,100 Wounded Warriors Project - $1,100 Harvest House - $1,100 St. Jude - $600 Heart for Kids - $100 Salvation Army Johnson County - $1,100 Meals on Wheels - $1,100 Buddies Cat Rescue - $100 Logan Almonte Scholarship - $200 Cancer Survivors Donation - $1,000 Shriner’s Hospital for Children - $500 City of Burleson Fire Department - $1,000 Burleson Police Department - $1,000 Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center - $1,000 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund - $1,000 Vestnik - $1,000 Children’s Advocacy Center Johnson County - $1,000 Texas Baptist Children’s Home - $1,000 Bridges Training Foundation - $1,000 Training for children/adults with disabilities - $1,000 Center for ASD - $1,000 Camp Kubena - $1,000 Alzheimers Research and Prevention Foundation - $1,000 Pets for Vets - $1,000

This is a total of $22,500. Yes, this is an honor and a priviledge to be able to give to others that need.

Celebrating Your Loved One This Christmas Lodge 97, Placedo Members Gather for Christmas Brunch

Ways to remember your loved one’s life this Christmas

by Sabrina N. Young, CFSP SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Member and Owner of Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center

Holidays are difficult times for families that have lost a loved one. It can be difficult to cope with mixed emotions you may feel. Here are some ways to help you through the grieving process this Christmas.

Create New Traditions

Creating new traditions in memory of your loved one is a great way to express your thoughts. It can be something they used to do during the holiday season. Creating these traditions will create new memories for years to come.

Set Up a Memorial

Setting up a memorial is a common way to express your remembrance of a loved one. Whether you light a candle or hang up their stocking over the fireplace, there are many ways to create a memorial.

Reach Out to Family

Reaching out to family members and talking with them about loved ones can help both parties with the grief process. Talking about your loved ones childhood stories and laughing together can help heal.

There are many ways to celebrate

Holiday Game Night

Kick off the holiday season right with some friendly competition. Create a lineup of classic games with fun holiday twists like Christmas Bingo. A fun idea: Instead of the usual placemarkers, blogger Amber from Crazy Little Projects uses popcorn to cover her board. If Bingo isn't up your alley, gather everyone for a round of Christmas movie trivia. The winner takes home a basket full of Christmas DVDs! —SPJST—

Czech Christmas Traditions

Czechs and Slovaks get a good start on Christmas with a traditional house cleaning at the beginning of December. This is not ordinary house cleaning, but a week-long effort.

The Christmas holiday season officially begins with Saint Nicholas Day. This marks the start of baking Vanocni Cukrovi (Christmas candies and sweets). Each family has its special goodies to share with other families and friends. Part of the holiday includes visiting friends and celebrating together. It is customary for those who had quarreled during the year to forgive each other publicly.

A tree is bought, secretly hidden away; no one is allowed to see it until after dinner on December 24. Only the head of the household trims the tree, done on Christmas Eve morning, and only he or she can see the tree until that magic moment when Jezisek - the Christ child - arrives, which always happens after dinner.

The Christmas tree is decorated with handmade ornaments using walnut shells wrapped in colored paper or gilded. Some use eggshells decorated to look like fish or angels. Colored pin wheels resembling snowflakes and stars are hung by a thread. A small crèche is placed at the base of the tree. Gifts are put under the tree before 6 p.m. in great secrecy.

On December 23, people go out and buy the traditional Christmas carp for dinner. Several days earlier, huge wooden barrels appeared in the cities with live carp swimming around in them. The buyer points to the fish he or she wants, and the fun of trying to catch it begins. Most often, the carp is taken home alive and allowed to swim in the family bathtub until Christmas Eve morning. Best cuts of the carp are covered with flour, dipped in egg, covered with bread crumbs, and fried. Lesser cuts are baked with dried prunes and served with dum-

Lodge 84, Dallas joined with KJT 111, KJZT 108, and BetterLife 401 on Sunday, December 4, 2022, for a Christmas celebration. Everyone enjoyed the visit from Santa and social hour that followed with a catered dinner and music by Czech and Then Some. It was a wonderful time shared by all.

There was caroling in the streets and homes on Christmas. Sometimes the carolers carried miniature Bethlehem scenes along. It was customary to invite them in for a glass of wine and vanocka, a sweet bread made with nuts, raisins, and candied fruit. There is much dancing and eating after the fasting which ends on Christmas Eve. Sometimes little boys dressed as The Three Kings go out singing for treats.

Dinner begins at 6 p.m.with members of the family standing and praying together, and then when the mother gives the signal, they all sit down at the same time to dinner and no one is allowed to get up - not matter what! They may share oplatky and honey before the meal. Christmas Eve supper might include pearl barley soup with mushrooms, carp, potato salad, fruits, and decorated cookies. In some families, there is a custom of putting a small coin under each person’s plate to symbolize wealth in the coming year, and that coin is carried around for good luck. When dinner is over, they all stand at the same time and wish each other a Joyous Christmas Stastne a Vesele Vanoce. Then they embrace and finally rush to the tree, and gifts are distributed and opened. A quiet evening is spent until Midnight Mass.
