Hope, Joy, Faith, and Peace Amen!

Revelation 22:21 ~ May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Now we come to the end of the year. And while I will depart slightly from the normal Christmas message formula, I hope it will be one that will make 2023 your best year yet.

We are will into the season of Advent as we prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It is a season of family and friends. A season of cheer and celebration. A season of favorite food and aromas. A season of bright colors and festive songs.

Have you ever noticed that the season of hope, faith, joy, and peace comes at the darkest time of the year?

As we approach Christmas day, the days get shorter, and the nights get longer. And while you may not experience a chill in the air during our Texas winter, it is nonetheless much cooler than it was just a few weeks prior. The trees lose their leaves, grass fades to a grayish brown and plants lose their color. Winter can be a period of cold, miserable darkness. It makes many want to just go inside, pour a hot beverage, get comfy, binge watch your favorite television show, and just wait until summer comes again.

In addition, December can be a month of utter chaos. It’s amazing that we ever get any business done this month. There are parties to attend . . . and presents to buy … and to wrap . . . and to pay for . . . all after fighting the crowd at the malls . . . and trees to decorate . . . and cookies to bake . . . and travel arrangements to be made . . . and airport security lines to be navigated. By the time New Year’s Day arrives, it’s time for a rest. (Or maybe a football game or six.) I wonder if the three wise men had reserved parking for their camels at the mall when they purchased gold, frankincense, and myrrh?

Does it seem paradoxical that we celebrate the birth of a baby, born more than two millennia ago, juxtaposed against the backdrop of this month of gloom and chaos?

That is the nature of God.

When the distractions of life get in the way of glorifying Him. When life becomes cold and miserable, and you feel like seeking shelter in your safe place. When it seems as though nothing is going the way you planned. When life is at its darkest, is when God delivers to you a baby; who to the world was, and is, and is to be the wonderful counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting father, the prince of peace, the King of kings and the Lord of lords. When life is at its darkest, is when God delivers to you a season of hope, faith, joy, and peace.

I love symmetry.

Today, we will focus on the last verse of the Bible, found in Revelation. I chose this verse, not only for symmetry sake, but also because it sums up the message that I would like you to remember for not only this month, but for next year and beyond. If you take away no other message this year, make it this one.

You see, just like our lives, Revelation is filled with scary, horrible, even macabre events. But, at just the right time, God sends a Messiah to reign over the universe. It’s a wonderful ending to the story, to be sure.

And as you go out into the world today and the rest of the month, do not let life’s events cause anxiety and stress. Rather, prepare your hearts and minds and know that your savior is nearby.

Always remember: Revelation 22:21 ~ May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.”

― Calvin Coolidge

May all the Blessings of our Savior reign Peace and Joy upon you and your families!
