It helps a great deal . . . particularly at this time of year.”

Even though things are a little different this year, Dean and Joy Eskew of Lodge 155, Austin visited with Santa at Bass Pro Shop. Although the youth could not sit on his lap, Santa took time to chat with Joy and ask both youth what they wanted for Christmas. Dean also enjoyed waving at Santa behind the glass.

Happy New Year, dear Vestnik readers. May 2021 be better than 2020.

Czech Folk Song Collection Larry Maresh, owner of Monarch Printing Company in Houston and a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, recently shared a reprinted copy of Pisničky České - Czech Folk Song Collection. I have thoroughly enjoyed looking through the 292 pages of this hard-bound book that is filled with lyrics to more than 220 Czech songs.

I remember several of these Czech songs playing proudly in the Schiller and Zavodny family households when I was growing up. And, today, my dad and I still enjoy singing songs like: Aj Lučka, Lučka Aj Lučka, lučka široká, roste na ní tráva, roste na ní tráva, Aj lučka, lučka široká, roste na ní tráva vysoká. Hej! A Já Sám A já sám, vždyckz sám, Své koníčky osedlám.

Své koníčkz okšíruju, Svou panenku pomiluju.

U Studánky U studánky seděla, do vodičky hleděla, Spatřila malou rybičku, Jak poly-kala vodičku.

The book was originally published

by Dallas Czech Singers in June 1985 and was reprinted with permission from Bob G. Liska, who is a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. Bob is one

of the last of the original contributors to the book. At the age of 90, he continues to direct the Dallas Czech Singers.

In addition to the Czech song lyrics, the book includes photos, sections on a history of Czech music in Texas, interpretation of Czech songs, and a history of the Dallas Czech Singers; and English and Czech indexes.

Larry is proud to have reprinted the song collection. “Every Czech home should have one of these,” he says. “It is a valuable resource of our Czech heritage.”

We all pray that 2021 will be a better year! So long, 2020. I hope everyone had a merry Christmas, and I am wishing all a healthy new year.

Here are important items to report to your members in January and the upcoming months.

Fraternal Focus to be Hosted Live January 12 . . . and You’re Invited Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek will host the next Fraternal Focus webinar on Tuesday, January 12 at 7 p.m. The webinar is open to all SPJST members that register. Please see the next Vestnik for more information. Once you register for the webinar, you will receive a confirmation email that you registered for the event.

Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2021 and does not seek reelection in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meeting.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Everyone spread the word! October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive to benefit the scholarship program. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education.

Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2021.

Important Paperwork Everyone, please know that the forms listed below are very important in receiving your enhanced premium refund and other incentives. Please return these forms even if there are no changes from the previous year.

Fraternal Activities Coordinators (FACs), it is very important to enter and complete your hours by Friday, January 15, 2021, to receive those refunds and other incentives. Please remind your lodge secretary of the 2021 New Officer Listing form that was mailed the first week of November from Receptionist/Compliance Specialist Tamara Gettys. This form needs to be completed and turned into the Home Office after you have your elections. All other deadline dates remain the same.

They are: January 2, 2021 - New Officers’ Listing form - address, phone listing and emails January 15, 2021 - Year-End Fraternal Incentive Reporting Hours February 19, 2021 - Outgoing Officer Awards May 15, 2021 - 990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office SPJST Scholarship Program Apps Due February 3 The deadline for submitting all scholarship paperwork for the SPJST Scholarship is Monday, February 3, 2020. The paperwork has to be in the Home Office by the above date — not postmarked by February 3. Any student (high school seniors and college undergraduates) who have not previously received a scholarship are eligible to apply. Lodge 17, New Tabor remembers deceased members Dear Readers, Lodge 17, New Tabor met for its monthly meeting on Sunday, December 6, 2020, at 2 p.m. Vice President Ted Dusek led the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present. Secretary Betty Suehs read the minutes of the November meeting. They were approved as read.

She reported that we had one death of a member recently - Larry Valigura.

Kyle Skrabanek gave the treasurer’s report, and he presented the officers with their annual appreciation gift.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Holly Narro gave her report. She reported that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive was ongoing, and she will have all the fraternal reports completed by the end of the year. She also gave the youth club report. In spite of all the COVID-19 restrictions, the youth club is still busy making a difference in our community. They collected $350 for the

Brazos Valley Food for Families food drive, and she and Lodge 17 Youth Club President Macy Narro made a presentation on December 3. She reported that she has four new youth club members.

Under old business, Holly reported that the youth club had purchased a new PA (public address) system for the lodge. A motion was made and approved that the lodge reimburse the youth club for the PA system. We also discussed our annual memorial service and Christmas dinner that was held at 5:30 p.m. There was no new business, and meeting was adjourned.

Approximately 75 members and guests attended our memorial service and Christmas dinner. Departed lodge members who were remembered in the candlelit service included Patricia Vavra, Mildred Houdek, Johnnie Ruth Homeyer, Bob Doonan, Colbert Drgac, Wilfred Hildebrand, and Helen Hildebrand. A special thanks to Brother Joseph Polasek for conducting the memorial service and for his great message. The youth presented a great Christmas program that was enjoyed by all.

After the program, a delicious chicken fried steak meal, catered by Jacob Beran, was enjoyed by all.

Lodge 18, Elgin Parking Lot: Site of 2020 Elgin Empty Bowl The fourth annual Elgin Empty Bowl was held Saturday, November 14, 2020, in front of the SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin Hall. Typically, Empty Bowl consists of restaurants serving soup to a room full of attendees and compete for awards for the best recipe. However, this year because of COVID-19, the event was changed to a drivethrough event where participants bought tickets to receive a “goodie bag” in place of the usual Empty Bowl experience. The goodie bags included a hand-decorated bowl, an Empty Bowl tradition, as well as coupons from various restaurants. The

event served a total of 66 people. Empty Bowl is a nationwide grassroots movement to raise money and awareness in an effort to end hunger and food insecurity. Elgin’s Empty Bowl is a partnership among the restaurants and caterers throughout Bastrop County, local artists and businesses. Proceeds from the event support Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry, Elgin Community Cupboard and the First Baptist Church of Elgin.

At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was given by President Vincent Newman, and everyone enjoyed honey baked ham and sausage provided by the lodge. Desserts were provided by members. I would like to thank Emma Kujawa and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us.

President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m. Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll except Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha and Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho.

For Make a Difference Day 2020, Lodge 187, Round Rock Fraternal Activities Coordinator Carla Krenek came up with a great idea. She asked everyone to collect candy and leftover Halloween candy for Operation Gratitude’s Halloween Candy Give Back Program. The program, which launches annually on August 17 and concludes on November 15, has been connecting communities with their military and first responder heroes each fall since 2008. Grateful Americans across the nation share a portion of their Halloween candy with Operation Gratitude, who in turn donates it to deployed troops, veterans, first responders, and frontline heroes with the goal of forging strong bonds between civilians and service men and women in communities nationwide. SPJST participates in TCHCC Heritage Fest & Muziky As a silver sponsor of Heritage Fest and Muziky at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC), SPJST was proud to participate in the event held Saturday, October 17, 2020. SPJST hosted a fish pond booth in front of the historic SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad Hall on the TCHCC campus in La Grange, Texas. Camp Kubena hosted ax throwing and cornhole games.

Activities throughout the day included an antique farm and car show, wood cutting at Zapalac Sawmill, demonstrations, pig plop 50/50, kiddie train rides, peanut thrashing/shelling, food, and music. The museum, library, and Czech Village were also open throughout the day.

State Fraternal Director shares January updates Second Sunday Youth Webcast premiers Sunday, January 10 at 6 p.m.

In today’s world, it’s important for us to stay in touch with each other without necessarily being in the same room.

Thanks to the wonders of technology, the SPJST Youth Program is working to make that happen. Beginning Sunday, January 10, 2021, at 6 p.m., SPJST premiers the first Second Sunday webcast.

All SPJST youth club members, nonyouth club members, friends, and family are invited to participate! This will be a great opportunity to communicate with you – and hear from you!

What can you expect? Think of Second Sunday like a television program where we visit with SPJST members – including past youth club members – who are making a positive difference in their lives and in their communities. It will also be a learning experience where guest presenters will cover a range of interesting topics. And, of course, it will provide us with a forum for presenting information relevant to the SPJST Youth Program. When you sign in for the Second Sunday program, your name and email address will be collected, enabling you to accumulate meeting points which may be applied towards attending SPJST Summer Camp.

These days, Ryan has his own business, “Drapela Works,” which manufactures personalized hand-

made gift items. We will also preview the 2021 youth year, including spring Youth Achievement Day (YADs) and summer camp. There will also be a short, interactive game for the participants. I know that I am looking forward to the program, and I hope you will be able to participate! Your efforts to spread the word to our younger members as well as to our teens is greatly appreciated!

how to set up a meeting on the social media platforms. Most families have smart phones or tablets, and siblings can join in.

If you are going to have a face-to-face social or youth meeting, you know the drill. Meeting organizers, remind your members of all necessary supplies – masks, hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, and distance markers. Deciding not to meet remains an option that should be considered or when precautions cannot be effectively implemented or adequately communicated. If this is the case, please indicate on your quarterly report that you did not meet due to COVID-19.

Youth Leaders Workshop Online The 2021 Youth Leaders Workshop will be held virtually through a webinar format on Saturday, January 16. Mark your calendar for this morning event.

The Home Office will not be open for leaders to attend in person as mentioned in a previous newsletter. This 2021 event is earlier in the year due to our SPJST youth year which now begins on January 1. The 2021 SPJST Youth Program Handbook will be available at spjst.org after January 1. To register for the Youth Leaders Workshop, visit spjst.org.

The youth have an important role to play in the development of our Society, and youth leaders play a very important role to make it all happen. We want to spread the word far and wide of all that the SPJST Youth Program has to offer. I encourage all SPJST sales agents to join in and learn more about the SPJST Youth Program and the important role it can play in the life of a young SPJST member. I would also like to extend an invitation to new Vice President Delisle Doherty to join us during the workshop to discuss bringing in new members and getting to know our youth leaders.

Youth Development Workshop As we get closer to this date and see an increase of COVID-19 cases, this workshop will also now be an online webinar. The 2021 Youth Development Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, January 30, 2021. Who’s invited? Youth leaders, SPJST youth, and parents.

Get to Know Your State Fraternal Director Frank Horak State Fraternal Director Frank Horak was born at Kleberg County Hospital in Kingsville, Texas, on September 4, 1967, to Edwin and Hazel Horak. Frank rode out his first hurricane when he was two weeks old. Hurricane Beulah was a Category 3 storm when it hit the Texas coast.

It spawned 115 tornadoes across Texas and was a slow-moving storm causing a large amount of flooding.

Frank’s parents purchased his first SPJST life certificate when he was three months old. Frank’s parents were not aware of the SPJST Youth Program and the activities offered. Therefore, he did not participate in the youth program.

While Frank and his older brother James “Jimmy” were growing up in Kingsville during the 1970s, they often visited their grandparents’ farm in the community of Ricardo. The homestead had a working windmill that was the only source of water. Water was pumped to

the washhouse, but not inside the home.

Frank’s grandmother cooked the family’s meals and kolaches with a kerosene stove. To this day, Frank can still remember the distinct smell of kerosene.

Frank enjoyed spending time on the farm. He liked to chase his grandmother’s chickens around the yard and look for crawdads in the ditch beside the road. Frank also recalls his grandmother chasing him with a broom because he would not leave her chickens alone. She never caught him though!

While growing up, Frank also spent a lot of time fishing on Baffin Bay and deer hunting in South Texas. He remembers waking up at 4:30 a.m. to be in a boat at sunrise. His dad told him it was the best time to fish while the water was calm and no one else was on the water.

Frank spent most of his summer vacations on the Frio River. He loved floating down the river, jumping out of the cypress trees into the river, and exploring the trails around Garner State Park. Frank also learned to dance at the park’s dance pavilion. Each night, parents and their children from across Texas would meet under the stars. Frank would put a quarter in the jukebox to play his two favorite songs - “Smoky Mountain Memories” by Mel Street and “Take It to the Limit” by the Eagles. Frank made many friends from around Texas during the summers.

Frank attended Henrietta M. King High School in Kingsville. He was very active in Future Farmers of America (FFA). Frank raised breeding rabbits, market rabbits, and market steers during

his four years of high school. He spent much of his time working and taking care of his FFA projects at his high school ag farm. Frank was awarded Star Greenhand Degree, Reserve Champion Market Rabbits – freshman year; Grand Champion Market Steer and Market Steer Showman Ship Award – junior year; and Reserve Champion Market Steer – senior year.

Frank worked closely with special needs children in a school swimming program. He and his fellow classmates taught the children to swim and how to overcome their fear of water, and they took the children bowling on Fridays.

Frank especially enjoyed seeing the expressions on the children’s faces and hearing their laughter because he knew it was making a difference in their lives.

Camp Kubena chaperone training will be conducted online. SPJST will be offering a number of training dates to choose from. It will be mandatory to attend using video and not voice call-in.

The training will be interactive with participants. Camp Kubena training will be conducted by Executive Director Rob Clift and State Fraternal Director Frank Horak.

All chaperones must make a 100 percent commitment to be at camp from start to finish in 2021. No exceptions!

We are required to have a certain number of chaperones to the number of campers.

If chaperones come in late or leave early, we end up being shorthanded with supervision. This causes us to have to scramble to find help to replace chaperones, and this affects everyone at camp.

Vestnik Project Vestnik Projects for 2021 will focus on SPJST members who work closely with our youth. This will be getting to know the seven District Youth Counselors, Fraternal Department staff, Supreme Lodge President, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication, and Camp Kubena Executive Director. We will share our interests when we were growing up. The January project profiles State Fraternal Director Frank Horak.

Beginning in January 2021, the monthly Vestnik Project will be presented for completion and submission online. The projects will be accessible on the spjst.org website under “Youth Program.”

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive to benefit the scholarship fund is still underway. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2021.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Shares December Activities Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club had a come-and-go Christmas gathering on Sunday, December 6, 2020. I read the story of St. Nicholas to everyone teaching the youth about our Czech tradition.

We enjoyed social distancing with hot chocolate, cookies, and a special bag of goodies from St. Nicholas.

For our charity project, we purchased blankets, socks, and sugar-free goodies to donate to Ennis Care Center residents.

Lodge 142, Houston Youth Club participates in Operation Christmas Child Lodge 142, Houston Youth Club sent five Christmas boxes to Operation Christmas Child for children ranging in age from two to 14 years. Youth club members sent in recommendations via email and discussed gift options per age group on meetings held in September and October via the Zoom platform. Youth who could attend in person joined together in November at the in-person Lodge 142 meeting and helped

wrap the presents. These presents will be sent all over the world to children who otherwise would not receive Christmas presents. Thank you, Lodge 142 Youth, for making these children’s dreams come true this Christmas season!

We will be able to find out where the boxes ended up in late December/early January once the boxes are processed.

In Memoriam In Memory of Glenn Kahanek

Resolution of Sympathy

Glenn “Chopper” Kahanek, 61, of New Taiton, Texas, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2020. He was born on October 17, 1959, in El Campo to the late Alvin and Joyce Livanec Kahanek.

He worked in the oilfield for more than 30 years and was a rig supervisor for Stone Well Service. He was a member of the Nada Knights of Columbus Council 3371; SPJST Glenn Kahanek Lodge 30, Taiton; and was a past director of Taiton Community Center.

Chopper had a huge heart and would do anything to help the community.

He is survived by daughter Meagan Dorris and husband Chase of El Campo; son Cody Kahanek of Nada; grandson Brandt Alan Kahanek; sister Karen Zapalac of New Taiton; brother Clarence Kahanek and wife Pam of Spring; and nephew Casey Kahanek of Spring.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law Edwin Zapalac.

Visitation was from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 15 at Triska Funeral Home. Viewing continued at St. John Catholic Church from 4 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 15 with a KC rosary being recited at the church at 5 p.m. Funeral mass was at 10 a.m. Monday, November 16 at St. John Catholic Church with Reverend John Affum officiating.

Burial followed at St. John’s Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Stephen “Slick” Drlik, Kenny Svatek, Gary Krpec, Dylan Treumer, Kenny Koenig, David Tomanek, Shannon Garner, and Mark Supak. Honorary bearer was grandson, Brandt Kahanek.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John Building Fund or to Wharton County Cares.

The Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, EVELYN M. SKLAR, age 96, of Hallettsville, Texas, who passed away Friday, December 4, 2020.

She was born on August 15, 1924, to Emil and Emilie Melnar in Hallettsville.

She was a longtime faithful member of Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church and a dedicated member of Vsetin Evelyn Sklar Christian Sisters.

On July 24, 1942, Evelyn married Elo H. Sklar in Hallettsville where they made their lifetime home. They were blessed with two children - son Leonard and daughter Charlene.

Evelyn was a hard-working dedicated employee. She was employed at Weingarten, Inc. for many years until they closed. She then worked at Kaspar Wire Works in Shiner and Utex in Weimar until the drive was too much. She then went to work for Kountry Bakery and retired from there after 13 years as a baker. In 1997, Evelyn was honored to be named Kolache Queen. She loved to bake homemade bread, kolaches, pies, and cakes. She also canned pears and sauerkraut, but was famous for her cold-packed pickles in her gallon jars.

Evelyn was a resident at Stevens Nursing and Rehab Center in Hallettsville for 20 years. She enjoyed playing bingo, dominoes, working on crafts, and other projects. With the excellent care from all the staff members throughout the years, she always considered this her home.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

Evelyn is survived by son Leonard and wife Mary Sklar of Hallettsville; daughter Charlene Leopold of Hallettsville; grandchildren Cheryl (Steve) Leopold, Connie (Scott) Janak, Cynthia (Dr.

Warren) Migura, and Dr. Paul (Amber) Sklar, all of Hallettsville, Ronald (Heather) Leopold of Helotes, and Roxanne (Kyle) Horton of Austin; 17 greatgrandchildren; and one great-greatgrandson.

She was preceded in death by husband Elo H. Sklar after 64 years of marriage, her parents; sisters Hermana Vasek, Elsie Dusek, Irene Vornsand, Stella Blaha, and Lucy Ubnoski; and brothers Albert and Alvin Melnar.

Visitation was at 5 pm, Sunday, December 6 at Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville and from 7 a.m. to 12 noon Monday, December 7 at Kubena Fu-

neral Home. Private family funeral was held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 7 at Vsetin Cemetery officiated by Dr. Reverend Mark Labaj. Pallbearers were Steve Leopold, Scott Janak, Dr. Warren Migura, Dr. Paul Sklar, Kyle Leopold, and Chase Janak.

TCGS submission deadline nears for Czech Families Histories V In January 2018, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) announced the publishing of Czech Family Histories V. The project was then placed on hold. We are pleased to announce the publication is once again underway and is projected to be available during our 2021 anniversary year.

It is hard to believe so many years have passed since the publishing of Czech Family Histories, Volumes I through IV. Yet, they have. Volumes I and II were published in 2005, followed

by Volumes III and IV in 2007. TCGS is pleased to announce plans for publishing Czech Family Histories, Volume V. Lives have changed greatly since 2005 and 2007. We have celebrated many marriages, births, and graduations, and we have celebrated the lives of family members who have gone before us. Many who submitted articles for the previous histories are the family genealogist and, through research, new an-

cestors and family members have been discovered. Possibly several trips to the Czech Republic have been made whereby new photos have been gained of not only ancestors or newly found relatives, but of ancestral homes as well.

Perhaps you do not have an article in any of the previously published volumes, and you would like to write your family history and cherished family memories so they will be documented and preserved but the cost of publishing such a document on your own prohibits it.

If anything mentioned above fits your profile, Texas Czech Genealogical Society would like for you to seriously consider writing and submitting your story, or stories, along with photos to be part of our Czech Family Histories, Volume V. You do not have to be a member of Texas Czech Genealogical Society in order to participate; however, we would gladly welcome you. Please see the submission guidelines for further information.

Submission Guidelines for Czech Family Histories, Volume V to be published by TCGS Submission Deadline: January 23, 2021 1. You may submit as many articles as you wish. Each can be of any length, but each submission must be submitted separately on a CD, DVD, or flash drive, and it must be accompanied by a printed copy of the article. Submissions can also be sent via email. If you do not have access to a computer, a typewritten hard copy will be accepted. We are sorry, but we cannot accept handwritten articles.

2. Articles should be typed using number 12 Times New Roman font and be single spaced with double spacing between paragraphs. Margins should be set at one inch.

3. If at all possible, only black and white photos should be submitted as the book will not be published with color photos.

If color photos are submitted, they will be published in black and white. Photos should be of good quality. Copies of quality photos can be made at Walmart, Walgreens, or CVS for your convenience at a very low price.

NCSML displays “Stitching History from the Holocaust” Stefanie Kohn, Curator National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library (NCSML) borrowed a traveling exhibition from the Jewish Museum Milwaukee called “Stitching History from the Holocaust.” The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library is a museum and library of Czech and Slovak history and culture located at 1400 Inspiration Place SW in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Established in 1974, the museum and library moved to its present site in 1983. The museum and library was severely affected by the Iowa flood of 2008.

The exhibit tells the story of Paul and Hedy Strnad, a Jewish couple who lived in Prague in the 1930s. Hedy Strnad was a successful dressmaker with her own

shop. By 1939, Czech Jews were facing increasing persecution. Paul Strnad sent letters to his cousin Alvin in Milwaukee, asking for help with getting visas so the couple could leave Czechoslovakia.

Paul sent some of his wife’s dress designs, hoping it would strengthen their case for permission to enter the United States. Unfortunately, the Strnads did not get out of Czechoslovakia and they were sent to the Terezín concentration camp. They were murdered in 1942.

The letters and dress designs ended up in a family member’s basement and were discovered decades later; they were subsequently donated to the Jewish Museum Milwaukee. The museum partnered with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater Costume Shop to bring the designs to life. Experts at the costume shop did extensive research on the materials and techniques available in 1939. Some of the fabrics were created with silk screen printing and hand painting to match Hedy Strnad’s drawings.

Strnad’s letters. Through the story of Hedy and Paul Strnad, visitors will learn about transcontinental connections, Czech Jewish history, the Terezín concentration camp, and the fashion industry in Czechoslovakia.

The NCSML supplemented the traveling exhibition with items from its own collections that pertain to Terezín (Theresienstadt in German). Terezín was a concentration camp created by the Nazis to house important, famous, or talented prisoners including composers and artists. The Nazis encouraged musical performances, stage productions and sporting events to create an apparent model community that masked the brutality taking place inside concentration camps across Europe. Reproductions of children’s drawings made in the camp are also on display. The originals were made between 1943 and 1944 as part of art classes taught to children imprisoned there by artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis.

She hid the drawings in two suitcases in the children’s dormitory before she and the majority of her students were sent to Auschwitz, where they were killed in the gas chambers.

Some bills feature Moses holding the Ten Commandments, with a Star of David in the bottom corner. Moses is depicted with misshapen fingers, a request by the officials to fit the Nazi image of Jewish physical inferiority. In reality, the money was of no real economic use except as payment for library book rentals.

Another NCSML addition is music played in the gallery. Many composers and musicians were sent to Terezín, where they continued to create and perform. The selections are from a series called “Composers of Theresienstadt.”

As memories of past New Year’s Eve celebratory traditions become a staple for many, hope abounds that Silvestr will once again be celebrated. Nonetheless, New Year’s Eve traditions have been rich in abundance in the Czech Republic throughout the years: Getting Ready New Year’s Eve is very popular in the Czech Republic, especially in Prague. People of Prague celebrate the day with grand arrangements from marvelous New Year’s Eve fireworks shows to beautiful musical concerts. Certain places like Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square and many more that have amazing beauty organize great programs on New Year’s Eve. Silvestr Silvestr is the Czech word for New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve is known as St. Sylvester’s Day because it is the saint’s feast day. And, since Prague was his place of birth, the tie is even stronger in the Czech Republic. It is taken very seriously – and joyously – throughout the country.

Toasts are given early, continuing through the day.

New Year’s Eve is party time with various chlebíčky - open-faced sandwiches nuts, brambůrky - homemade potato chips - and other snacks. Midnight is celebrated by drinking šampaňské - champagne - or some other local sparkling wine. Some Czechs eat vepřový ovar - boiled pork head - with se strouhaným křenem a jablky grated horseradish and apples - at midnight.

In Prague, taxis are virtually impossible to find. (The Czech Republic has very strict drunk-driving laws. If anyone has consumed even one beer, it is illegal for that person to drive.) People gather everywhere, in public as opposed to the home-centered Christmas celebrations.

For those visiting Prague during this time, be aware that the streets, buses, trams, and metro will be very crowded, and as stated above, taxis are almost nonexistent. On the other hand, the party is anywhere and everywhere!

Fireworks Another most important part of the celebration is the fireworks show. You will be able to watch one of the best fireworks up in the sky. Whether you are young or adult, the breathtaking view of fireworks will mesmerize you completely.

Famous spots for such firework shows are Charles Bridge and Wenceslas Square.

Fireworks go on sale early in December for a Czech New Year. This holiday is one of the country’s best reasons to set off massive, elaborate fireworks displays – and with the short days and long nights, everyone can take full advantage of many hours of darkness, though pyrotechnics are set off during the day as well. Sparklers, firecrackers, and other enjoyable fireworks are available for sale in many stores.

At midnight, the fireworks take over.

Private and public displays become one, and the sky is alight with showers of multicolored sparks. This isn’t the end of the party, though; far from it! The celebrations continue until sleep, dawn, or both. It is a sight not to be missed.

“Formed in Fire” now on display at National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library Stefanie Kohn, Curator National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library There are many stunning artifacts in the collections of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, but few can match the brilliance of the Czech glass and porcelain objects donated by Joyce Anderson.

More than 200 of the most beautiful items she has donated are featured in the exhibit “Formed in Fire: Glass from the Joyce Anderson Collection.” The collection includes Egermann, Moser, and Loetz glass; Royal Dux porcelain, perfume bottles, jewelry, Amphora pottery, and much more.

Joyce Anderson began collecting Czech glass and porcelain while she was in high school. Her mother was a knowledgeable collector and took Joyce along to antique stores and auctions. Mrs. Anderson has amassed thousands of pieces and continues to add to her collection.

She is proud of her Czech heritage. She and her husband John Anderson, along with her parents, Evelyn and Emil Lamparek, were instrumental in the founding of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. She has generously donated more than 700 objects to the

Many names familiar to lovers of all things Czech and Slovak appear in the exhibition. Egermann pieces on display include bells, vases, and decanters.

Egermann glass is most recognizable as a dark red glass with white hunting and castle scenes, but Egermann can have many other colors, including yellow, blue and green. Moser is another famous name in the glass world, and the Anderson Collection contains many gorgeous examples. Moser glass first became famous for the quality of engraved decoration. Later, pieces were decorated with applied enameled leaves, fruits, insects, and birds.

In addition to glass, the exhibit highlights pottery and porcelain. Perhaps the most famous Czech porcelain is from the Royal Dux line. The Anderson Collection has many Pieces of Royal Dux, including figurines and elaborate compotes (a fancy bowl resting atop human figures and trees.) Amphora pottery is

also included. While many of the early Amphora pieces had a Victorian flare, Amphora’s designs of the early 20th century caused the company to become synonymous with Art Nouveau ceramics.

The exhibit is complemented by a series of videos playing in the gallery.

These depict glass and ceramic makers in action, allowing visitors to understand how common raw materials, very hot furnaces, and skilled craftsmen create stunning glass and porcelain.
