As President/CEO, I am continually inspired by SPJST’s rich legacy of supporting and enriching the lives of our members for more than 128 years. For several weeks now, I’ve been gathering articles, photos, and memories for the SPJST history book I’m working on Our Vibrant Legacy: The SPJST Story. I’m still collecting and would love it if you could share your special pho tos and stories with me; however, today I want to share something personal with you— something I believe can help many of
State Royalty youth members ride on the SPJST float during the Westfest parade. More on page 9.
Dear SPJST Members,
you secure a prosperous future for yourselves and your families. Recently, I decided to roll over a significant portion of my 401(k) into SPJST’s flexible annuity program, which is currently offering an impressive 4.25 percent interest rate. It isn’t the first time I’ve taken advantage of the program and is unlikely to be the last. As before, my decision was both strategic and one that is deeply rooted in my upbringing. Strategic in the sense that

I am writing to share important news regarding a member of our SPJST Home Office family. Controller Roy Vajdak recently announced his retirement, effective September 5, 2025. Roy’s passion in looking out for SPJST’s financial integrity and providing guidance in the accounting and information technology areas have helped shape our fraternal order into the organization it is today.
A proud graduate of Texas A&M University and Texan of Czech ancestry, Roy also holds a law degree from South Texas College of Law, which has proven valuable to SPJST over the years. Roy joined the SPJST Home Office management team in 2011. His
commanding presence in the office— often marked by his boisterous laugh that could be heard throughout the building—added a touch of humor to our days. Beyond his professional contributions, Roy cherishes his love for his wife, Becky, children and grandchildren, reminding us of the importance of a well-balanced lifestyle that honors both career and family.
Please join me in extending our heartfelt gratitude to Roy for his years of service to SPJST. We wish him well in his future endeavors and hope that he enjoys a happy retirement.

If you haven’t reviewed your policy in a while, consider reaching out to your SPJST sales agent. A simple conversation can give you peace of mind and may help you discover additional options to fit your family’s needs.
Life insurance is more than a contract—it is a promise. It is the promise your loved ones will be cared for, even if you are no longer able to provide for them. At SPJST, this promise has been at the heart of our mission since 1897. Our society was founded on the idea of neighbor helping neighbor, and that spirit continues today as we work together to protect families and strengthen communities.

it’s a secure vehicle with no management fees that will provide me with a consistent cash flow in my retirement. Deeply rooted in that my mother and father were devout believers in the SPJST annuity program and disciplined in their approach to savings and investments. I witnessed firsthand how their participation in SPJST’s annuity program helped them to achieve the financial security they enjoyed in their later years. My father passed away in 1994 and my mother in 2013, but their unwavering faith in SPJST remains a guiding light for me.
All Aboard!
An SPJST annuity is a secure investment and retirement vehicle that can genuinely enhance your financial wellbeing. The minimum investment to establish an annuity account is just $1,250, making it accessible for many families to start saving for the future. Furthermore, contributions can be easily managed through automatic bank drafts or
periodic deposits.
The annuity program also presents an excellent gift idea for your children and grandchildren! Introducing them to regular saving at an early age can set them on a path toward financial independence and security. Imagine gifting them an SPJST annuity or better yet – a Roth IRA – that not only starts their savings journey but becomes a foundational part of their financial future.
This Is a Great Opportunity
For a limited time, any new money deposit of at least $25,000 into a new SPJST flexible annuity account will earn a remarkable return of 6 percent until August 31, 2026, after which it will revert to the prevailing interest rate. This is a great opportunity to maximize your investment and secure a stable financial future for your loved ones. For more information, please contact an SPJST sales agent or territory manager in your area. You can also contact the SPJST Insurance Department directly at the SPJST Home Office at 800-727-7578.
As we continue to live, work, and play together, I encourage all of you to explore the benefits of SPJST’s annuity program. Let’s honor the traditions that have strengthened our Society by making informed financial decisions that will leave a legacy for generations to come.
Thank you for being a vital part of the SPJST family.

Congratulations, delisle doherty on 15 years of SPJST Home Office service
From the Desk of Delisle L. Doherty SPJST Vice President of Sales and Marketing
It’s Your Life
What Is Going On With My Beneficiency?
Many of you have received letters about your beneficiaries and may be asking: Why am I getting this letter? Why did I get one for one certificate and not the other? Did SPJST lose my beneficiaries? Am I going to have problems if I die tomorrow?
The simple answer: nothing is wrong. Yes, your beneficiaries are still listed, and yes, if something were to happen tomorrow, your benefits would be paid out. Everything is good.
As SPJST continues to grow and update its technology to better serve you, we decided to take this opportunity to send letters to members with policies on the older part of our system — just to make sure all beneficiary information is current. Why? Because life changes. And too often, policies get tucked away and forgotten.
Think about it:
• Have you or your children married, and the names on your beneficiaries haven’t been updated?
Congratulations to Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty for completing 15 years of SPJST Home Office service! He was recognized by the Executive Committee on August 20, 2025. Delisle, center, is pictured with Chair of the Board of Directors John Engelke, left, and President/ CEO Brian Vanicek.
• Has a beneficiary moved or changed phone numbers, leaving outdated contact information on file?
• Have you been divorced, and your exspouse is still listed as your beneficiary?
• Do you now have children who should be your beneficiaries instead of your parents?
• Have any of your beneficiaries passed away?
These are real-life situations that can create big problems later if not updated now.
If you received a letter from us, please rest assured that your policy is safe and everything is still fine. From your standpoint, this is just a chance to review and make sure nothing has changed. Even if everything looks the same, we ask that you complete the form and return it (by mail or email) — it’s a helpful doublecheck.
If you didn’t receive a letter, that means your policies are already in the updated system. Still, it’s always wise to pull them out once a year and review. Has there been a marriage, a new child, or a name change? Do you perhaps need more coverage?
At SPJST, your insurance is safe. Everything is good. But we want to do better, and this process will help us ensure your policies are current. Our goal is to make sure your beneficiaries never have problems when it comes time to use your policy. In fact, this is a good reminder to review all of your policies, even with other companies, so that everything is up to date.
My door is always open. You can call me directly at 832-232-2049. If I can’t answer your question, I will connect you with someone who can. If I get 1,000 calls, I’ll return 1,000 calls (as long as you leave a message). It is our privilege to serve you and provide the very best in customer service. I hope this article brings you comfort and confidence, knowing that you are — and always will be — our number one priority.
“Change is the only constant in life.” – Heraclitus
Have a safe and blessed week, Delisle L. Doherty

 A Season of Gratitude
October brings cooler breezes, vibrant colors, and plenty of opportunities to gather as a fraternal family. From festivals to service projects, October is about celebrating traditions while giving back to our communities. Let’s keep the spirit of connection strong as we embrace the season together.
Happy October! October 1 marks the beginning of Czech Heritage Month in Texas — a time to honor the traditions, music, food, and values brought here by Czech immigrants. From lively polkas and waltzes to kolaches fresh from the oven, Czech culture continues to shape communities across our state. This year, I had the joy of rolling up my sleeves for a kolache baking lesson — a reminder that these delicious pastries are more than just treats. They are a handson way to connect with our heritage, share time together, and keep traditions alive for future generations.
On a family note, two days before her nine-month birthday, my sweet granddaughter decided it was time to take her first steps! With a big smile, her bottle in hand, and a little wobble, she set off walking as if she had been practicing all along. It’s amazing to see her curiosity and independence shining through so early—what a joyful milestone to celebrate!

How Support and Connection Can Improve Mental Health as You Age
(StatePoint) Mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety and depression, are common among older adults, and can be exacerbated by declining health, loss of loved ones, financial challenges and late-in-life regrets.
Unfortunately, these issues can impact overall health, quality of life, and in some cases, even be life-threatening. The suicide rate among Americans aged 75 and older is the highest of any age group, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
If you’re an older adult, Dr. Zia Wahid, medical director with Cigna's Medicare business, encourages you to take the following actions:

Nurture relationships: Research has found loneliness can have negative health consequences as impactful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. That’s why finding connection is essential. Check with your local community center to find out what activities, classes and social events they offer. Faith-based organizations, neighborhood gatherings, and clubs based on common interests are also great ways to meet people and stay engaged. A simple phone call with a loved one is often enough to strengthen bonds, and emotional resilience.
Get moving: Physical activity can improve strength and agility as you age. It can also be a powerful way to boost your mood and ease anxiety and depression. From chair yoga to water aerobics, there are forms of exercise appropriate for every ability and age, and free or inexpensive classes offered in many communities. Your Medicare Advantage (MA) plan may also offer fitness benefits that can help you move more and stay connected. Group fitness not your thing? Consider just getting outdoors for a short walk and a dose of sunshine. Avoid substance misuse: Substance use disorder is common among older adults, and can intensify mental health challenges. One in 11 adults over age 60 had a substance use disorder in 2022, and that number is on the rise, according to the American Psychological Association. Check your Medicare plan. It may cover treatment for alcoholism and substance use in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Schedule a doctor’s visit: Mental health, just like physical health, requires your attention and care. If you’re experiencing mental health concerns, schedule a doctor’s appointment. They can refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist or clinical social worker, or provide additional advice and resources.
Get it off your chest: Talking about your feelings with friends, family, or even a trained professional can be helpful. Medicare covers individual and group therapy with doctors or licensed clinicians, and some of these services are offered virtually.
Consider medication: Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, can be effective treatments for certain mental health conditions. A Part D plan – either standalone or within an MA plan –covers many of these prescriptions. Before starting a new medication, be sure to talk to your doctor about possible side effects and interactions with drugs you’re currently taking.
Don’t wait: If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, immediately call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 to reach a trained crisis counselor. This free, confidential service is available 24/7 nationwide in both English and Spanish.
For more information about Medicare benefits and mental health, visit cignamedicareinformation.com.
“Depression and other mental health concerns don’t have to be part of aging. Treating these conditions can put you on the path toward a more fulfilling life, so that you can enjoy this chapter of life with confidence and joy,” says Dr. Wahid.

Be sure to check with your youth leader for upcoming projects and ways to earn credit toward our Caring Challenges and youth recognition programs.
We also want to celebrate the creativity and talents of our youth. This October, as part of Czech Heritage Month in Texas, the Vestnik will feature fun activities with a Czech theme. Finding Czech Roots in Texas
Dear Melanie,
My father was very impressed when he visited SPJST Lodge 81, Needville. He wrote the following article in Czech for your publishing consideration, along with a general thank you to SPJST.
Kapela začala hrát, k mému údivu, zpívají česky a hrají polku.
Thank you for considering this for the Vestnik. We’re very grateful to SPJST for keeping Czech and Slovak traditions and connections alive.
Fraternally yours, Pavol Rojko Lodge 81, Needville

Original Czech Text by František Rojko (translated to English):
It all began with a question: “Dad, would you like to visit the countrymen with me?” We got in the car — in the USA there’s no other way — and after about a half-hour drive, my son said, “We’re here, Lodge 81, Needville.”
We walked inside and discovered a large hall with a dance floor, stage, and seating with tables. There was even a place to prepare refreshments. Since we were in Texas, of course, there was air conditioning. I was introduced to Bradley (oh, those declensions!). He explained his Czech heritage to me — something everyone here is very, very proud of. The band was tuning up, visitors were arriving, refreshments were being prepared. The evening dance was ready to begin.
Everyone who came by stopped to greet us and made sure to tell us where in Bohemia or Moravia their family came from. I was amazed that everyone remembered these details.

The band started to play, and to my surprise they were singing in Czech and playing polkas. It was wonderful. The first dancers swayed to the rhythm of the polka, then the waltz, always accompanied by Czech songs. After a few sets there was a break, the chatter grew lively, and there was even a family celebration going on.
The next set brought classic American music — I even heard the Hawaiian guitar. Couples swayed to the music, and it was clear they knew how to dance and loved every moment of it. Such a pleasant Friday event.
Then it was time to leave. I felt a pang of regret that I could not stay longer with these warm people, whose roots reach back to a faraway land. Each of them wanted to share their story and their heritage with me.
Perhaps I will meet you again someday, my friends.
May life go well for you. And how did you say ‘goodbye’ to me? “S Pánem Bohem.” (Go with God.)

Czech Heritage Month in Texas
October is recognized as Czech Heritage Month in Texas, a time to honor and celebrate the deep roots and lasting contributions of Czech immigrants and their descendants across the state. From the 1800s forward, Czech pioneers arrived with traditions of music, language, farming, and craftsmanship. Today, those traditions continue to flourish, reminding us of the hard work, perseverance, and faith that shaped so many
•
•
Texas communities. Czech culture re mains a proud and enduring part of our state’s history.
Throughout the month, festivals, church picnics, concerts, and com munity gatherings highlight Czech food, music, dance, and folk customs. Polka bands, kolaches, kroje (folk costumes), and traditional arts and crafts bring the sights and sounds of Czech heritage to life. Organizations such as the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, and many local SPJST lodges play a central role in preserving these traditions by hosting programs and encouraging par ticipation from all ages. These events not only provide joyful celebrations, but also serve as important opportunities to educate new generations about Czech values of family, faith, and community service.
