It’s been a full and exciting season at SPJST, and I’m thankful to share several important updates and reflections with you.
First, we’re introducing a new 6% first-year rate on our flexible non-IRA annuities. This limited-time offering is available now through December 31, 2025, for “new money” with a minimum initial deposit of $25,000. This is a strong and competitive product designed to benefit members who are planning for the future. Contact your agent or the Home Office for details.
Another important update involves our beloved Vestnik. Since 1912, this publication has been the heartbeat of SPJST, connecting members across the miles with news, photos, and stories that keep our fraternal family close. After much discussion—and with great care—we are moving to a monthly publication schedule. This change will allow us to combine more content into each issue, give lodges and members more time to submit their news, and make the best use of resources while continuing to provide a high-quality printed paper to every member who currently receives it by mail. If you love your printed Vestnik, you don’t have to do a thing—it will still come to your mailbox, just as it always has. (See pages 4 and 5 for more info.)
We’re also expanding the ways you can connect with SPJST news— through social media, email updates, our website, and our upcoming mobile app. No matter how you choose to read it, the Vestnik will remain a place where we share milestones, celebrate accomplishments, and tell our story together.
Speaking of celebration—our youth
gave us so much to be proud of at the 2025 SPJST State Youth Showcase. With poise, passion, and creativity, they brought our “Never Stop Exploring” theme to life. Their talent, sportsmanship, and kindness were on full display. If you ever wonder where hope lives, spend a day with our young members— you’ll find it there. Thank you to the parents, volunteers, youth leaders, and staff who made this event such a success.
Finally, I want to give a heartfelt shout-out to the Communications/ Member Engagement team. This year has brought changes and challenges, and through it all, they have been steadfast, creative, and dedicated—often working early mornings, late nights, and weekends to make sure our programs, events, and communications run smoothly. Tammy, Frank, Brooke, Kristen, and Autumn—you are appreciated beyond measure. Your teamwork, positivity, and commitment to our mission inspire me daily, and I am grateful to serve alongside you.
As we look ahead, SPJST’s strength remains in our shared purpose—honoring tradition while finding new ways to connect and serve. Thank you for continuing this journey with us.

2022 State King: fraternal support that makes a difference
Dear SPJST Family, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for your generosity in choosing me to receive an SPJST Scholarship.
I would like to give you an update of how my first year at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Waco went. Last summer, I was employed with Dailey Co. in College Station, on the plumbing side of their business. I spent almost three months working under a master plumber and a journeyman plumber. Plumbing and pipefitting is my field of study at TSTC. I was enrolled in 12 hours in the fall and then again in the spring at TSTC. Currently, I’m working on 12 hours for our summer session . . . and I have less than a year to complete my degree at TSTC. This past year has been fun and a great learning experience. This was my first time to live away from my parents. I have been working two jobs while going to school to help with living expenses. I work the weekends for Cock-
tails 4U catering events and gatherings. I also have been working during the week with one of my plumbing instructors who has a part-time plumbing company as an apprentice. This job will help me with real, hands-on experiences for my degree.
I have persistence and a passion to do for and help others. For 14 years, I was busy in the town of Snook, not only trying to improve myself, but also the lives of others. By furthering my education in a trade, I hope to one day become a master plumber and help society by providing necessary services to everyday lives. I aim to make a difference in my community, and this scholarship is helping me make a difference when it comes to affording the education I need to do that. Again, I thank you for your confidence to help me achieve my educational goals and dreams.
Sincerely,
J. Beaux Hruska

From The SPJST Executive Committee
July 23, 2025, Minutes of the Special Meeting of SPJST Executive Committee held via online video conference
PRESIDING
The meeting was called to order by Chair of the Board of Directors John Engelke on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 10:03 a.m.
ATTENDING
Board of Directors—Donnie VictorickDistrict One/Vice Chair; Jesse Pospisil - District Two; John Engelke - District Three/Chair; Bobby Davis - District Four; Bradley Stavinoha - District Five; Annie Vahalik - District Six; Regina House - District Seven.
Executive Officers—Brian Vanicek, President/CEO; Delisle Doherty, Vice President of Sales and Marketing; Melanie Zavodny, Vice President of Communications; Leonard Mikeska, Chief Financial Officer; Roy Vajdak, Controller.
Advisory Board Member—Jim Therrell.
Digital Transformation Consultant—Dr. Al Burns.
Recording Secretary—Katharine Tillman, Executive Assistant to the Chief Financial Officer.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the meeting was to consider a recommendation to approve a flex annuity program with an introductory first-year rate of 6.0 percent. Additionally, Vice President of Communications Zavodny continued ongoing discussions regarding the transition of the Vestnik from a bi-monthly to a monthly publication—an idea that has been explored in previous board meetings and tested in recent months.
President/CEO Vanicek presented the new flex annuity as non-IRA with 7year declining surrender charge for members to submit “new money” minimum $25,000 for a rate of 6.0 percent with a guarantee to not go below 2.90 percent, which will begin August 1, 2025, and end August 31, 2026.
Information was presented by Controller Vajdak, Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty, and President/CEO Vanicek about the proposed flex annuity program and questions from the directors were answered. Larry White of AQS and Actuary Glenn Tobleman offered no objections to the proposed annuity program for SPJST. Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty and Vice President of Communications Zavodny would be working together on advertising strategies to cover the internet, social media, and local newspapers.
Director Victorick moved to adopt the proposed guaranteed rate would be 6.0 percent starting August 1, 2025, through August 31, 2026, on new money accounts with a minimum deposit of $25,000. Director Stavinoha seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
President/CEO Vanicek invited Vice President of Communications Zavodny to present the possibility of transitioning the Vestnik from a bi-monthly to a monthly publication. Zavodny noted that, while the Vestnik currently averages 32 to 40 pages per issue, a monthly format would expand the issues to 40 to 56 pages. This would continue to provide members and lodges opportunities to share their events and updates. The transition is also expected to streamline printing and mailing processes, reduce costs, and explore enhanced print formats in the future.
Additionally, in late 2025/early 2026, we will use a digital app through the ManageMy platform for keeping members and lodges up to date. We will expand our digital delivery while continuing to provide printed copies for members who prefer traditional formats. It was emphasized that the transition will be gradual as we have already started experimenting with monthly publications versus bi-monthly in the hopes the membership will accept this positive change.
Further discussion was had by the directors and officers answering questions regarding this is a transitional period we have already tested with the membership and seems to be accepting so far. Vice President of Communications Zavodny confirmed SPJST will publish two issues in both August and October and one issue in both September and November. Then in November/December, SPJST will work to incorporate ManageMy as part of the launch before the end of the year. It was asked by some Directors to have more research done financially to see the pros and cons of this transition before it was officially voted on. It was expressed by Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty this is a positive move financially to assist in reducing costs for the publication. Controller Vajdak emailed the directors the current member information by lodge of who is currently receiving the Vestnik via mail.
Director Davis moved to allow Melanie to move forward to begin the transition of publishing the Vestnik from bimonthly to monthly publications. Director House seconded and the motion passed. It carried with four in favor and three opposed. Voting in favor: Director Engelke, Director Davis, Director Stavinoha, and Director House. Voting in opposition: Director Victorick, Director Vahalik, and Director Pospisil.
Last notes from Director Engelke for Vice President of Communications Zavodny to compile more information to present at the August Executive Committee Meeting so planning can take place for the holidays and for more information to be shared about moving to a format other than newsprint.

Honoring Tradition, Expanding Connections VESTNIK to Transition to Monthly Publication
Since 1912, the SPJST Vestnik has connected members across Texas and beyond with news, photos, stories, and announcements that keep our fraternal family close. For decades, the Vestnik was a weekly publication. In 2020, it moved to a bi-monthly schedule. Now, after much discussion and careful consideration, we are preparing for the next step in its journey — moving to a monthly publication schedule.
This decision was made with several goals in mind:
• Better use of resources — A monthly schedule allows the Communications/ Member Engagement team to combine content into larger issues while maintaining the high-quality printing and service that our members expect and enjoy.
• More time for submissions — Lodges, districts, and members will have more lead time to prepare and submit their news, photos, and event announcements.
• Content presentation — We will continue to review ways to enhance the Vestnik’s layout and design, whether in print or digital formats, while preserving the look and feel our readers know and love.
We are especially grateful to our longtime printing partners at the Temple Daily Telegram, who have faithfully printed the Vestnik for more than 20 years. Their commitment to quality and service helps us deliver a paper our members look forward to reading and sharing.
None of this would be possible without our lodge reporters, officers, and members who take the time to share their news. Each photo, article, meeting recap, and community event write-up plays a vital role in telling SPJST’s story. Your dedication to keeping the lines of communication open is what keeps the Vestnik meaningful and vibrant — and we are deeply grateful for your contributions. We also want to reassure our loyal readers — especially those who currently receive the Vestnik by mail — that you do not need to do anything to continue your subscription. If you are receiving the printed edition now, you will continue to receive it every month. The only change is that you will receive one larger
issue instead of two smaller ones. In addition to the printed Vestnik, SPJST is expanding the ways we share information:
• Social Media — We post photos, announcements, and reminders almost daily.
• Email Blasts — Quick updates for members who want timely reminders in their inbox.
• New SPJST App — Coming soon, the app will offer news, events, and updates right at your fingertips.
• Website — Digital archives, event calendars, and resources are always available at spjst.org.
For members who enjoy looking back, the Vestnik archive — containing all available issues from 1912 to present — can be accessed at spjst.org/archives. While early issues from 1912 through the early 1940s are incomplete, the collection is a treasured resource that preserves our history for generations to come.
We know the Vestnik holds a special place in the hearts of our members. That is why this change is being approached thoughtfully and with plenty of notice. Over the next several weeks, new publication dates will be established for the proposed monthly schedule and published in the calendar so everyone can plan ahead.
The heart of the Vestnik will remain the same — a place where members share their milestones, lodge activities, and fraternal spirit. This change ensures we can keep delivering it in a way that is sustainable, engaging, and ready for the future — while honoring the traditions and trust that have kept the Vestnik strong for more than 113 years.
As we honor our history and embrace new opportunities, we thank you — our loyal readers — for making the Vestnik part of your lives. And we thank the Temple Daily Telegram for their continued partnership in helping us share the SPJST story every month.
Fraternally, Melanie Zavodny

It’s Your Life
6% Annuity is Here
In staying competitive with the industry, SPJST is now offering a flexible non-IRA annuity at 6% for anyone who purchases it between now and December 31, 2025. In the interest of transparency, here are the rules:
• Must be a new annuity – you cannot transfer an old SPJST annuity into this new product.
• Must be purchased between August 1 and December 31, 2025.
• Initial deposit must be a minimum of $25,000.
• After the initial deposit, you can make unlimited additional deposits during the offer period and still receive the 6% rate.
• The 6% will be guaranteed until August 31, 2026.
• Beginning September 1, 2026, unlike our competitors, we will give you the going rate for our regular flex annuity (currently 5.25%), with a guaranteed minimum of 2.9%.
• This is a 7-year annuity. After the first year, you can take up to three withdrawals totaling 10%, without SPJST penalties (if you are under 59 1/2, a 10% IRS penalty will apply).
Why take advantage of this opportunity?
1. Rates may drop. If the Federal Reserve lowers rates, you’ll still be locked in at 6%.
2. Shorter term. Many companies require an 8-year term – ours is only 7.
3. Continues after the term. No need to “re-up” with new surrender charges; your annuity simply keeps going. And if rates go up after August 31, 2026, yours will go up too.
4. Flexible with your other annuities. If you have an older annuity out of its surrender period, you can open this one for growth and use the old one for withdrawals.
5. Spousal continuation. If something happens to you, your spouse can continue the annuity without a new surrender period.
6. Tax advantages. Makes a great tax shelter. While part of your estate for estate tax purposes, annuity proceeds are not subject to probate and are only taxed as ordinary income when withdrawn.
7. Retirement income. Can be annuitized to provide lifetime income when you’re ready.
In today’s uncertain environment, this is a rare opportunity to know your money is safe from market fluctuations and will continue to grow without the worry of seeing it disappear.
If you have any questions, please contact your agent, territory manager, or Annuity Specialist Marissa Salinas at the Home Office. You’re also welcome to contact me directly at 832-232-2049. I am always happy to help.

District 6 Council shares notes from rally held in Taiton
The District 6 Rally was held Saturday, June 12, 2025, at Taiton Community Center. It was a fun-filled day of community, games and service, including support for the Warrior’s Weekend project.
Director of Member Engagement Frank Horak began the event with an icebreaker that grouped attendees by birth month. District 6 Council Chair Yvonne Maucarele led the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. A tribute speech and moment of silence honored the late Johnny Hoffman of Lodge 184, Moulton who served as District 6 Treasurer.
District 6 Director Annie Vahalik spoke about the new format for district rallies and reminded members about Warrior’s Weekend, encouraging flag sponsorship in honor of veterans. She reported that SPJST remains financially strong with $274 million in assets and over $1.15 billion of life insurance and annuities in force. Last year, 40 scholarships were awarded, 93,000 fraternal hours were logged, and $1.3 million was donated to charity.
Camp Kubena has been put up for sale, which was a difficult but necessary decision. SPJST youth camp was held at
Hermann Sons Camp in Comfort, Texas.
Yvonne shared that the district needs a new treasurer and encouraged suggestions for the next get-together. Sales agents and the new territory manager, Ralph Juarez, were recognized.
District 6 Council Youth Chair Lisa Bubela led a rocket-building activity for youth in celebration of the “Never Stop Exploring” theme. Prizes were awarded to the rockets that flew farthest.
Ron Kocian spoke about the Warrior’s Weekend organization, now in its 19th year, and the upcoming fishing trip in Port O’Connor on October 25. Last year, they honored 2,400 veterans with flags placed on the Field of Honor in Victoria.
Vice President of Communications
Melanie Zavodny and Director of Member Engagement Horak introduced the Manage My platform for tracking fraternal hours and events. It is expected to launch by the end of the year and will include training and an app for mobile use.
Melanie asked attendees to reflect on the question: “The future of our SPJST lodge is ___.” Answers included: youth, community, growth, commitment, and belonging.
SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek invited members to contribute stories, photos, and updates for the upcoming

Please bring back-to-school supplies to the next meeting and any eyeglasses to donate. In October, we will donate used stamps for Veterans. In November, we will donate food for Food for Families. In December, we will participate in Operation Christmas Child. The next event will be Westfest Parade on August 30. Dana and Jodie Sr. McAdams are thinking about having the youth club flea market fundraiser on the first weekend of October at the Circle Flea Market in Waco. The youth then practiced their talents, and the meeting adjourned.
Congratulations, Youth!
At the State Youth Showcase on July 26, we had 11 youth enter nearly 100 entries. We had nine first place finishes -
one of them being Levi McAdams, who was crowned Mr. SPJST; six second place finishes; eight third place finishes; 11 fourth place finishes; six fifth place finishes; and nine sixth place finishes!
Fifty total awards! What an amazing job our youth did. Last year, we only had one first place finish - Everett McAdams as Mr. SPJST and 36 total awards.
Next, Diana gave the treasurer’s report.
Under old business, we discussed the District 3 Rally. Everyone who attended said they had a great time. We believe that Lodge 66 had the largest lodge presence at the meeting. Dana mentioned that Ron had asked at the last meeting where our Operation Christmas Child boxes from last year had been delivered. Our boxes went to Mexico. Dana was lucky enough to find a video of a young Mexican girl opening a box that appears to be one of our boxes. She showed it to the group. Dana also gave an update about possibly volunteering at the zoo. Please bring school supplies to the next meeting. We will deliver them to La Vega. The next District 3 Rally is set for April 26, 2026, at Lodge 92, Fort Worth.
Under new business, Michael mentioned that he will have his knee replacement surgery on August 6. We pray for a quick recovery and complete healing for him. Joan Shelton made a motion to give our donation this month to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The motion was seconded by Michael and passed. Diana sent a sympathy card to the family of Dorothy Kucera on behalf of the Sunshine Com-
mittee. John Engelke gave a list of upcoming SPJST events.
The July door prize was won by Joan Shelton and the 100 percent pot of $8 was won by Hannah Galler. The meeting adjourned at 7:27 p.m.

Our Vibrant Legacy
The SPJST Story
OUR HISTORY IS BEING WRITTEN AND YOU’RE INVITED TO SHARE YOUR STORY!
Dear SPJST Brothers and Sisters,
I’m working on a book — writing and compiling — and am requesting your kind assistance. The working title for the book is Our Vibrant Legacy: The SPJST Story. Publication will coincide with SPJST’s 130th Anniversary in 2027.
SPJST has survived and thrived because we have historically done right by our members, their communities, and the insurance industry. Our Vibrant Legacy will make extensive use of large and thematic photographs to illustrate SPJST’s history. Additionally, old snapshots of lodge and Society happenings will be included. Our Vibrant Legacy will be an honest portrayal of how the SPJST originated and how it has evolved.
Your Voice Matters
SPJST’s history is not just about dates and events. It’s about the people who have championed the fraternal ideal and brought our organization to life. Your experiences — and of those who preceded you — are invited. Our Vibrant Legacy will chronicle how SPJST members and lodges have impacted their communities. From momentous projects like the construction of lodge halls to smaller moments, such as notable fundraisers and vibrant cultural gatherings. Every story adds depth and dimension to the SPJST legacy.
How to Contribute
As we embark on this exciting project, I invite you to be a vital part of this endeavor by sharing your personal stories and memories of the defining moments in your life or your family’s life that have been touched by the SPJST. Here are a few ways you can share your stories:
1. Written Narratives Please write down your memories or experiences related to SPJST. This could be a specific event, a cherished tradition, or a meaningful interaction you’ve had within the SPJST community.
2. Photographs I encourage you to include any photos that capture your experiences, whether they’re snapshots from lodge events, community projects, or personal moments that reflect the spirit of SPJST.
3. Interviews If you’d prefer to share your story verbally, I’d be happy to arrange a brief interview with you.
Get Inspired
Think about the moments that made you proud to be a part of SPJST. What projects or events touched your heart? How have you seen SPJST impact your community? Your unique perspective is invaluable, and we want to ensure it’s represented in our history book. While I may not be able to use everything that I receive, I would love to preserve it in our SPJST archives.
Deadline for Submissions
Please send your stories, photographs, or requests for interviews to me at vanicek@spjst.com by November 30. If you have any questions, please drop me a line at vanicek@spjst.com.
Thank you for being a part of the SPJST Family. Your stories are the threads that weave our legacy, and we look forward to celebrating them in Our Vibrant Legacy: The SPJST Story

1. Get Organized Early - Keep your homework, notes, and supplies in order from day one. A tidy backpack and planner can save you from last-minute stress!
2. Set a Routine - Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day will help you feel more energized and ready to learn!
3. Ask Questions - Never be afraid to raise your hand or talk to your teacher if you need help. That’s what they’re there for!
4. Be Kind - Smile at classmates, invite someone to sit with you at lunch, and lend a helping hand. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
5. Get Involved - Join a club, try out for a sport, or volunteer for a school event. You’ll make new friends and discover new interests!
Remember, each school year is a fresh start - an opportunity to learn new things, meet new people, and grow. Here’s to making this year a great one!

Both of these two scholarship recipients are the granddaughters of the very proud Carol and Donnie Havemann. They have many aunts and uncles and cousins who are all Lodge 88 members. In addition, Katelyn was a Girl Scout for 12 years, raised pigs and rabbits, and was a volunteer staff member for the summer MD Anderson Cancer Camp AOK.
Katelyn will attend Texas A&M University in the fall majoring in kinesiology. In her essay, Katelyn wrote, “As a volunteer at Camp AOK for MD Anderson cancer patients, I had a renewed outlook on life that made me grateful every day for life’s little blessings.”
Carly will attend Blinn College in College Station and plans to transfer to Texas A&M University. She is majoring in kinesiology. In her essay, Carly wrote, “As a volunteer at the NAM food pantry, I learned it is my responsibility to help make this world a better place for others and to trust that acts of kindness will spread throughout our world.”
We congratulate Katelyn and Carly on all their achievements, and we wish them the very best in their college career.

The 2025 National Polka Festival has come and gone, but the memories are alive and etched in our hearts forever! SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis member participation was clearly a big part of the weekend starting with the dance contest. This year, the contest was held at the KJT hall and a big thank you to SPJST for its sponsorship. We couldn’t do it without the help of SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanice and wife Joan, who come every year to help the Krajca family with this popular event. The SPJST Lodge 25 Youth Club al-
ways enjoys riding on the beautiful float that SPJST delivers to Ennis every year. Thank you so much to Melanie, David, Frank, John, and Diana for always showing up to make this weekend the success it has been since 1967! After the parade, everyone heads to SPJST Lodge 25 for a day of food, fun, friends, family, fellowship, and making more memories! Thanks to all our wonderful lodge volunteers who make this a day that will go down in the history books! —Rita Holland, Youth Leader/FAC

SPJST and Czech Heritage Society Recognize Heroes of Flood Recovery
SPJST and the Czech Heritage Society of Texas were honored to co-host a special dinner on July 19 at Salt Grass in San Antonio recognizing the Czech Emergency Response Team (CZERT) and Texas Guardsman for their assistance in Kerr County flood recovery efforts. The team of 16 — along with their four search-and-rescue dogs — was thanked for their courage, skill, and compassion during their time in Texas. The evening was filled with fellowship, gratitude, and heartfelt appreciation.
Czech firefighters help with search and rescue efforts after Hill Country floods

Volunteer firefighters from the Czech Republic were among the more than 1,000 volunteers helping out in the Texas Hill Country search and rescue efforts in July.
Jiri Studnicka and Jaroslav Piesch are two of the men from the Czech Republic crew who worked on the recovery efforts after at least 107 (Editor’s Note: at least 135 as of August 6) people died in the Hill Country floods. They’ve been working in multiple areas alongside the Texas National Guard throughout their time in Texas, including Boerne and Kerrville.
“All of us are firefighters,” Piesch said.
They are also trained in other areas. Their crew operates drones, handles search, rescue and recovery dogs, and finds people in debris, among other recovery efforts.
These volunteers make it possible to locate missing people after the devastating July 4 floods.
“Cooperation between teams and coordination is really smooth,” Piesch said.
“When we are searching in the forest, we are using the small one drone, and if it is very hard for our dogs, we will make a first recognition, and the dog handler can see it on the monitor, and then he will go with the dog, there,” Studnicka said.
They also said it was an easy decision to help Texans, especially after the National Guard helped them in the past.
“It’s a pleasure to help here because the National Guard helped us last year with our floods,” Studnicka said.
“Thousands and thousands of people were evacuated [in that flood],” Piesch said.
It’s a partnership these Czech Republic firefighters hope to continue for years to come. For now, they are just hopeful
these Hill Country families can grieve.
“We would like to express our condolences to them,” Piesch said.
Czech rescue team heads to Texas to aid in flood search
By Ruth Fraňková | July 13, 2025

A team of 16 Czech firefighters from the USAR unit left for Texas on Sunday, July 13 to help search for people missing after devastating floods. According to fire service spokesperson Klára Ochmanová, they are the only foreign team invited to assist. The five-to-seven-day mission is part of a bilateral agreement between the Czech Embassy in the US and the Texas National Guard. The Czech team will carry out specialized search operations in the worst-affected areas. Among them are dog handlers with trained rescue dogs, along with other technical experts. Their exact assignments will be confirmed after arrival, based on local needs.
Texas flood disaster: Czech rescue team joins search for missing

Thursday marks the fourth day Czech firefighters have been assisting in the search for missing persons in flood-devastated central Texas, near the town of Kerrville. So far, they have recovered three bodies.
Firefighters from the Czech Urban Search and Rescue team, known as USAR, began their work Monday morning, July 14 in the area around Center Point, Texas, where the Guadalupe River overflowed its banks on July 4th.
The 16-member team, which includes specially trained rescue dogs, split into two groups. Each group has reported potential findings.
On their second day in the field, the team conducted what’s known as a secondary search—a final, detailed sweep of the area. They moved slowly upstream along steep riverbanks, covering ground previously checked by earlier reconnaissance teams.
Pavel Novák, Czech Radio
Major Jiří Studnička, a member of the USAR team currently deployed in Texas, explains:
“The day was marked, you could say, by a sort of secondary search—which for us means a final, thorough sweep. No other search teams will follow— only recovery crews. So anyone we don’t find now is, unfortunately, lost forever.”
Heavy equipment is expected to move in after the Czech firefighters complete their operations, to begin clearing flood debris.
One of the major challenges for the team is the threat of venomous snakes. The firefighters carry long poles for protection—but keeping the dogs safe is even more difficult, says Studnička.
“That’s probably the biggest challenge—to protect the dogs from being attacked by such animals,” he says. “We try to make noise to avoid contact altogether, but our resources are limited. So far—thank God—we haven’t had a direct encounter between one of our dogs and a venomous snake.”
At the end of their second day in the field, the Czech team received an unexpected visit. As they returned to base in Kerrville to prepare for a flight to San Antonio, they were met by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Air Force General Steven Nordhaus, Chief of the U.S. National Guard Bureau.
“They congratulated the whole team and expressed great admiration for the work we’re doing here,” says Studnička. “It was a big surprise, and a great satisfaction. We honestly didn’t expect to be appreciated this much.
“I think the guys were really pleased. Above all, we’re trying to make sure our work here is meaningful and that we help reduce the number of people still missing.”
This mission builds on a long-standing partnership between Czechia and the US. Through the State Partnership Pro-

The deployment also shows how that support goes both ways. When floods hit Czechia last year, the Texas National Guard stepped in with aerial reconnaissance. Now, Czech firefighters are helping on the ground in Texas.
So far, the July 4th floods have taken at least 135 lives. More are still missing, and the search could go on for months.

temperatures and difficult terrain, as described to journalists by the commander of the detachment, Jaromír Piesch, after their arrival in Pardubice. A military plane from the US landed at the airport in Pardubice with the team of firefighters, consisting of 16 people and four dogs. The team found several victims of the floods over eight days; five have been confirmed so far.
The firefighters also had to be careful of spiders and snakes that are found in the area. Therefore, they had a procedure in place that was supposed to protect both people and dogs. According to Piesch, the four-legged rescuers did a very good job and now need to rest, as the deployment was long for them.
While Texans are enduring blazing summer heat, August in Prague, the capital of Czechia, offers a much gentler climate! Average daytime temperatures hover around 75°F, with cooler evenings dipping to about 57°F — perfect for an evening stroll along the Vltava River or a relaxed dinner at an outdoor cafe.
Rain showers are fairly common this time of year, often in short bursts, so Prague locals are rarely without a small umbrella tucked in their bags. Unlike Texas’ dry, scorching afternoons, the Czech summer is known for its lush green parks and fresh air, ideal for picnics, cycling, and open-air concerts!
Summer in Prague is also festival season. From classical music performances in historic squares to folk celebrations in nearby villages, the mild weather draws
both locals and visitors outdoors. It’s a reminder that Czech summers aren’t just about the temperature — they’re about slowing down, savoring traditions, and enjoying the beauty of the season! —SPJST—
