SPJST Partners to Support Kerr County Flood Recovery Efforts

SPJST is proud to partner in supporting Kerr County flood recovery efforts through the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country.

All donations will be directed to the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund, which supports local rescue, relief, and rebuilding efforts following the deadly July 4 flood.

The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country will distribute the funds to vetted organizations assisting residents in Hunt, Ingram, Kerrville, Center Point, and Comfort.

Founded in 1982, the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country gives out approximately $6 million annually to nonprofits and local causes.

This cause is especially meaningful to SPJST, as many of our members, friends, and fraternal partners—including our friends at Hermann Sons Life—have deep ties to the affected area. In solidarity, SPJST is directing the funds raised to the same trusted organization they are supporting. Donations can be made online at spjst.org/cares or mailed to:

What Legacy Will You Leave?

In the wake of the devastating flooding that has impacted so many Texas communities — taking lives, destroying homes, and leaving unimaginable heartbreak in its path — our hearts are with all those who are suffering. During times like these, we are reminded how quickly life can change — and how important it is to cherish one another, speak gently, and do good while we still have the chance.

There’s a quote I’ve always loved: “Be the reason someone believes in the goodness of people.”

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the impact our words and attitudes have on others — especially in times of change or challenge. It’s easy to critique, to point out what’s missing, or to dwell on what we think is wrong. But it takes courage — real courage — to lead with kindness. To speak truth in love. To be someone who lifts others, rather than tears them down.

If we’ve been given more time on this earth — whether through a second chance, a miracle, or just another sunrise — I believe that time is sacred. It’s an invitation. An opportunity to make peace. To be better. To be gentler. To leave behind something that matters — not just in what we say, but in how we make people feel.

None of us are perfect. But we do get to choose, every day, whether we make things better or harder for the people working alongside us. And I can tell you — firsthand — that what lifts our organization and our members

higher isn’t constant criticism. It’s collaboration. It’s encouragement. It’s the ability to see the good and help it grow.

So maybe — just maybe — the reason we’re still here isn’t to point fingers at everything that’s wrong. Maybe the reason we’re here is to love louder. To be a little more patient. A little more humble. A little more kind.

Because in the end, what we say matters. But how we say it — and how we treat one another — matters even more.

As we carry these lessons forward, I want to offer a heartfelt blessing to every young person preparing for the 2025 SPJST State Youth Showcase on July 25 and 26. You are a shining example of what’s good in this world — full of creativity, compassion, and courage. May God guide your steps, calm your nerves, and let your light shine brightly for all to see.

To our members and families: in a world that can be heavy with sorrow and struggle, may we each be reminded that we are still here for a reason. Not to tear down — but to build up. Not to condemn — but to love. Let’s use the time we’re given to draw closer to one another, to walk humbly, and to speak life wherever we go.

SPJST brings spirit to the Belton Parade

SPJST proudly celebrated Independence Day with a float in Belton’s 175th annual Fourth of July Parade on July 4, 2025. Six SPJST members and their families helped prepare the patriotic float. The City of Belton awarded the float “Most Patriotic Nonprofit Float” with a trophy.

SPJST Royalty Mr. SPJST Everett McAdams of Lodge 66, Waco and Miss SPJST Megan Pflughaupt of Lodge 88, Houston waved to crowds as the float moved down Main Street.

The 1.5-mile parade route began at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and ended at the Belton Police Memorial. Though it literally rained on our parade, spirits were warm with smiles, cheers, and waving flags. The atmosphere was warm, excited and full of all-American pride.

This marks another honor in a long history of SPJST float awards across Texas parades. Each float is a symbol of the group’s Czech heritage, community pride, and cultural strength.

Miss Pflughaupt also was promoted by the Home Office to support her year-long service project benefiting Columbus Rescue Dogs. She has collected blankets, towels, toys, and food for the shelter.

SPJST Home Office staff donated four large bags of pet food in her honor. Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny and Membership Engagement Specialist Frank Horak led the effort.

Supporters can donate supplies at Lodge 88, Houston. Online gifts may be

made at freedomstreetrescue.org/donate by choosing “Honor Pledge” and writing “Miss SPJST.”

Pflughaupt was also photographed with Cosmo, a rescue husky and honorary SPJST K-9, who represented animals still waiting for homes.

SPJST recognizes those who have fallen in battle for the Nation’s freedoms we enjoy today. Freedom continues because of their sacrifice, and we honor that legacy every July 4.

It’s Your Life

Sustained Under Pressure

Taken from ‘God’s Purpose for Life’ by Charles F. Stanley

One of the ways Jesus handled the pressures He faced was by stepping away from the demands of daily life to spend time with the Father. Matthew 14:23 tells us, “After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray.” He understood that quiet moments of communion with God were absolutely essential.

If those moments were crucial for the Savior—God in the flesh—how much more vital are they for us?

When stress builds and relief seems out of reach, we must follow Jesus’ example and seek a quiet place to be alone with Him. In those sacred moments, we open ourselves to His presence, wisdom, and power. We cast our burdens on Him, acknowledging that He alone is our suf-

ficiency. He can carry the weight of any stressful or painful situation we face. Many people struggle because they carry guilt from past sin, believing God won’t hear their prayers. But our heavenly Father waits with unconditional love and forgiveness, always ready to welcome us back and set us on the right course. Never hesitate to bring your afflictions and pressures to God in prayer. He knows what you need—even before you ask—and He longs to spend time with you.

Director of Member Engagement: Staying Cool, Staying Connected

Howdy, SPJST Members!

 Standing with the Hill Country

Many of us are aware that parts of the Texas Hill Country experienced devastating flooding over the July 4th holiday — affecting families, homes, and beloved summer destinations. With our SPJST camp programs rooted in this region now, this hits especially close to home.

Fortunately, Hermann Sons Life Hilltop camp sits 100 feet on a hill above the Guadalupe River. Camp staff were at home with their families for the July 4th holiday. There were a couple of key staff at the camp, and they are all fine. Please keep our fellow Texans in your prayers. We are deeply grateful for the safety of Hermann Sons Camp. Our thoughts are with all those in the surrounding communities and across the state who are now facing cleanup and recovery. In true SPJST spirit, let us continue to look for ways to support one another — through kindness, donations, or simply staying connected.

As you know, summer doesn’t quit just because the calendar says it’s August! So far, July has been mild this year. However, with the sun still blazing and temps hanging on well into the fall, we’re keeping things cool — with great fellowship, strong traditions, and exciting lodge activities across the state. District Rallies have been very well attended across the districts. I have enjoyed connecting with our members and seeing new faces at these functions.

This time of year is a reminder of our Texas toughness and SPJST spirit — we endure the heat together, stay active in our communities, and support each other like family. Whether you’re enjoying lodge gatherings, working on service projects, or just catching up with fellow members, we appreciate all you do to keep our organization strong and welcoming.

SPJST Presents 2025 District Rallies

District Rallies Spark New Energy and Higher Attendance Across Texas

SPJST’s inaugural District Rallies are breathing new life into longstanding traditions with record turnouts, exciting activities, and heartfelt community service.

Replacing standard district meetings, the rallies are designed to blend official business with fun, fellowship, and refreshments for all ages.

SPJST Home Office introduced the new format this year with hopes of making members feel more connected and involved. Each district saw increased attendance and strong participation from youth and adults alike. Members are also encouraged to reflect on their rally experience ahead of an upcoming digital survey, set to launch August 9.

District One Rally –Bounties Collected for Blessing Boxes

District One hosted its rally on Saturday, June 1 at Lodge 9, Snook Hall. With 75 people in attendance, the event celebrated one of this year’s strongest youth showings to date, welcoming 23 young participants.

In addition to business meetings, the day featured activities for all ages and a strong emphasis on community support. Members raised $269 and donated boxes of nonperishables and new hygiene products to the food pantry and Blessing Boxes in Snook and Caldwell.

SPJST member Lauren Plachy appreciated the event and those who made it happen.

“It was such a fun day,” Plachy said. “Thank you for everyone who played a part in planning and making it a success.”

District One Council Secretary

Sandra Stone joined in the festivities.

“It was an awesome day,” Stone said.

District Two Rally –Paws-itive Impact

District Two held its rally on Sunday, June 22 at Lodge 48, Beyersville Hall and brought in the largest attendance this year so far. More than 130 SPJST members and families gathered to raise $1,225 and filled a truck bed with donations for Taylor Animal Shelter.

A prize auction stretched across four long tables and featured fan-favorite items such as a DeWalt drill, a 60-quart Igloo cooler, and a Beachcomber Bag. The event offered a relaxed space for conversations and connection.

Among those conversations was one of fellowship between SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek and Honorary SPJST Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. They celebrated the svačina together, symbolizing good friendship and leadership across generations.

District Three Rally –Wallets Out for West Warrior Kids Foundation

District Three gathered on Sunday, June 29 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall. Their silent cookie auction featured more than two dozen batches of various cookies, and the photography contest boasted 18 entries. Together, members raised $1,900 for the West Warrior Kids Foundation, which supports families with hospitalized children.

“It was good to get reacquainted with old friends and meet new ones,” said District Three Council Member Peggy Dobecka. “The change from how our regular district meetings were normally held was refreshing, and I think everyone enjoyed the day.”

Kids led the way with creative energy and joy. Young participants launched homemade rockets, with Eddy McAdams launching the furthest and won a dinosaur-themed launcher. He quickly shared it with other kids in attendance.

District Three Junior Miss Abby McAdams added a cheerful highlight to the event, winning a Samsung Galaxy Tablet during the door prize giveaway.

Looking Ahead

SPJST reminds members that a digital feedback survey will go out August 9 to 17. Those who provided an email at their rally should keep an eye out. Anyone who needs to update their email, can contact the Home Office at info@spjst.org.

This year’s rallies mark a refreshing and strong alternative to traditional meetings. With new energy and larger crowds, SPJST’s inaugural rallies brought members together in celebration of service, heritage, and community spirit.

Tips to Plan a Summer Adventure

Few people would deny summer is a season of relaxation. But that familiar laid back vibe does not mean summer also can’t be a time for adventure.

The definition of an adventure depends on who does the defining. To some, an adventure may entail relaxing on a boat as it sways back and forth on a serene lake or in a calm ocean. For others, adrenaline levels need to rise in order for an activity to qualify as an adventure. It’s perfectly alright for people to define adventure in their own unique way. However one chooses to define an adventure, the following are some summer adventure planning pointers that can make an upcoming excursion more enjoyable.

Choose your destination and route. Heading off for parts unknown with no itinerary may seem like the ultimate adventure. However, a lack of planning can quickly derail a getaway. Traffic, fellow tourists, lodging shortages, and other unwanted developments are all likely when vacationers do not plan ahead. By planning an adventure in advance, travelers can choose routes that are less likely to be overcome with traffic, book stays in memorable and comfortable accommodations and steer clear of crowded tourist destinations.

Leave yourself some leeway. Of course, planning ahead does not require planning every second of each day you will be traveling. Leave yourself some wiggle room and free time to head off the beaten path if you so desire. Avoid making dinner reservations for each night you're traveling, as doing so might lead you to prioritize making the reservation over exploring. Instead, build in some days and nights where you can go at your own pace without having to rush to ensure you make it to a prearranged activity or dinner reservation on time.

Pack food and beverages. Nothing can derail an adventure more quickly than thirst and/or a growling stomach. Going off the grid or enjoying an adventure without a schedule dictating your every moment is easier when you pack food and beverages. Depending on where you're going, the nearest eatery could be far away, which means travelers who don’t pack food and beverages are likely to spend more time

driving in search of sustenance than they are enjoying an adventure.

Make a contingency plan. Road trips are not as predictable as excursions to resorts that make no secret about all guests can enjoy during their stay. Traffic, large crowds and weather can turn an adventurous road trip into an exercise in managing frustration. A contingency plan that includes a detailed list of alternative activities and destinations can ensure an adventure does not become a nightmare if forces beyond your control present themselves.

Planning a summer adventure can be its own enjoyable experience that heightens travelers’ anticipation for an upcoming trip. (MS) —SPJST—

What is wellness?

Wellness is an oft-heard buzzword among those looking to live a healthy lifestyle, but it’s also something of a mystery. People aspiring to be the best version of themselves with a strong body and mind may be curious about how various wellness strategies can help them achieve that goal.

The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. Some experts break wellness down into four categories: spiritual, social, psychological, and physical. Similarly, the Virginia

Kindergarten Readiness Program says wellness is promoted through self-care, including four key strategies: rest, relaxation, replenishment, and release.

Although the terms wellness, health, and well-being often are interchanged, each of these factors are their own unique entity.

Health - The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign says health often is defined as the absence of illness and disease, so various physical, social and mental conditions fall under the health umbrella.

Well-being - Although there are different definitions for well-being, the term generally refers to living a fulfill-

Wellness - The whole-health organization Take Care® says wellness refers to the pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that create health. Wellness acts as the plan or individual pursuit to achieve health and thus a greater sense of well-being.

Better understanding of the niche components of overall health and wellness can help people enjoy physical and mental benefits and live more fulfilling lives.

Promoting wellness

The following are some avenues for pursuing wellness.

• Self-care

• Routine medical exams and immunizations

• Healthy diet and exercise habits

• Being aware of one's feelings

• Cultivating an optimistic outlook

• Learning ways to avoid or manage stress

• Being open to new ideas and perspectives

• Engaging in social activities, volunteerism and contributing to the community

• Finding meaning or purpose

The concepts of wellness, well-being and health seem interchangeable, but there are some distinctions that set them apart. A combination of all three ultimately adds up to a healthier individual. (MS) —SPJST—

Artco-Bell. Wilburn also served with pride as a member of the Rogers Volunteer Fire Department, always ready to lend a helping hand.

Wilburn Lee Murrow, 82 of Rogers, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, surrounded by love. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Ray Crow officiating. Burial followed at Wilson Valley Cemetery in Little River. The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 11 at the funeral home.

Born on April 10, 1943, in his family’s home off Cedar Creek Road in Temple, Wilburn was the beloved son of Lorena Pruitt Murrow and Giles Nathan Murrow.

Wilburn grew up alongside his twin brother, Joe Lee Murrow, and sister, Josephine Murrow Harrison. He was also blessed with half-siblings T.J. Threadgill, Ophelia Murrow Arnold, and Lola Mae Murrow Grospiron.

He attended Salado ISD and later graduated from Troy High School, where he began building the roots of a life centered on community, hard work, and family. He worked for Shallow Ford Construction and proudly retired from

On April 22, 1966, Wilburn married the love of his life, Kathryn Raesz Murrow. Together they built a life full of joy, devotion, and laughter. Their greatest joy was their son, Darrel Murrow, who married Kimberly Franklin, continuing Wilburn’s legacy of family-centered living.

Wilburn was a proud grandfather to Stephen (Cheyenne), Tanner (Kenneth), Taylor, and Stephanie Murrow, and great-grandfather to Addison Brooke Murrow, all of whom he adored deeply.

A man of simple joys and big love, Wilburn found happiness in gardening, tending chickens, visiting with neighbors, and listening to polka music. He enjoyed riding down to the river, attending tractor shows, drinking a cold Natural Light, and playing washers in the backyard. Above all, Wilburn cherished his family — and his best dog friend, Katie — with his whole heart.

He was a faithful member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, and his life was a testament to generosity, humility, and joy. He was also a past longtime member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. Wilburn’s presence, wisdom, and wit will be missed more than words can express.

A meal was held after the committal service at Moffat Volunteer Fire Department in Temple.

The Little Mr./Miss is a mentoring program designed for boys and girls who will be in kindergarten through fifth grade during the 2025-2026 school year. The Junior Mr./ Miss is a mentoring program designed for boys and girls who will be in 6th to 8th grade during the 2025-2026 school year. This program was developed to allow our young members the opportunity to experience the world of SPJST before they are old enough to compete in the Mr./Miss categories. It is SPJST’s goal to provide the Little Mr./Miss and the Junior Mr./Miss contestants with fun opportunities to gain stage presence, manners, etiquette, poise, experience, and confidence and to develop public speaking skills.

Mr. SPJST and Miss SPJST are considered to be the youth ambassadors for the Society. As such, they represent SPJST at several public events during their reign. More than anything, perhaps, the Mr. SPJST and Miss SPJST Scholarship Program is about presentation and poise and the ability to communicate effectively.

Moravian dialects are encouraged and are used as a bridge to standard Czech. Students, who grew up speaking Moravian and then stopped, discover that after a few weeks in class, many words come back that they have not used in years. Also, many cherished memories return to students as they study the language of their ancestors.

To register for non-credit courses, call 979-743-5237. For credit courses information, call 979-743-5200. For more information, visit www.blinn.edu/czech.

Taroks Tuesday had quite a nice showing on June 5, 2025. We had four tables with 19 people total. The Burnett family from Taylor came to learn the game! It was a good time!

Remembering Jan Hus: The Czech reformer who gave his life for truth

Each year on July 6, Czechs around the world observe Jan Hus Day in remembrance of one of their most significant historical figures. A national holiday in the Czech Republic, the day honors the life and legacy of Jan Hus (c. 1372-1415); a religious thinker, reformer, and early advocate for moral integrity and spiritual independence.

Born in the small Bohemian village of Husinec, Jan Hus studied theology at Charles University in Prague, where he became a prominent scholar and priest. In time, he became known for his sermons at the Bethlehem Chapel in Prague, where he spoke to large crowds in the Czech language; a notable shift at the time that made religious teachings more accessible to everyday people.

Hus strongly believed in living a life rooted in personal integrity, moral responsibility, and faith that was grounded in scripture. He encouraged spiritual reflection, education, and the idea that all people should be able to engage meaningfully with their beliefs.

His ideas, while widely supported among many in Bohemia, were also met with opposition. In 1415, Hus was sum-

moned to the Council of Constance, where he was asked to answer for his views. Though he had been promised safe conduct, he was imprisoned and ultimately sentenced to death. He was executed by burning on July 6, 1415, becoming a martyr in the eyes of many who viewed his death as a stand for truth and conscience.

The words most closely associated with Hus, “truth prevails,” continues to carry deep meaning for the Czech people. Today, the phrase is the national motto of the Czech Republic, symbolizing the enduring power of standing by one’s convictions with dignity and courage.

Jan Hus is remembered not only as a religious figure, but as a symbol of courage, integrity, and national pride. His state in Old Town Square in Prague is one of the city’s most recognized landmarks, visited by Czechs and tourists alike as a tribute to his life and message.

As we observe Jan Hus Day, we reflect on the values he represents: a commitment to truth, the courage to act one one’s beliefs, and the importance of preserving cultural heritage through understanding and education.

Czech Heritage Museum showcases historic Drozd Family Bible

The Drozd Family Bible, pictured left, is currently on display at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin. The Bible is courtesy of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple. Czech families from Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia began moving to Texas in the 1850s. They brought with them the Moravian Brethren and Catholic faith traditions. This Moravian Brethren Bible belonged to Jan Drozd. He hid the book to keep the Catholic Habsburg monarchy, from taking it during the 1848-1849 revolution in the Austrian Empire. Jan passed the Bible down to his son, John Drozd, who brought it to America in 1864. Pictured next to the Drozd Family Bible is Benjamin F. Parker’s Bible (1792).
