END OF AN ERA:

Magnolia’s Bartell Drugs to close pharmacy this summer

mid-July.

It’s the end of an era for a long-standing pharmacy in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood. The Bartell Drugs location at 2222 32nd Ave. W., near the Magnolia Playfields, is set to close its pharmacy on July 1, according to store employees. However, the retail portion of the store will remain open until

The closure marks a significant moment for the community, which has relied on the neighborhood pharmacy for decades.

While the store did not provide a reason for the pharmacy’s closure, the decision comes amid ongoing changes in the retail and pharmaceutical landscape.

The future of two other nearby Bartell Drugs locations—one at 419 N.E. 71st

St. near Green Lake and another at 8500 35th Ave. N.E. in Wedgwood—looks bleak, as both are set to join the 32nd Ave location on the closure list. These shutdowns are part of ongoing bankruptcy proceedings for Rite Aid, which acquired Bartell Drugs as a subsidiary in 2020 Attempts to reach staff at both locations were unsuccessful, as the phone lines were not working and

no one was available for comment.

The closure of the Magnolia Bartell Drugs reduces pharmacy options for residents in the area. However, some locally owned alternatives are available nearby, such as Bob Johnson's in The Gj Building, 1407 NW 85th St near Barker Park on Crown Hill, and Katterman's Sand Point Pharmacy Near Children's Hospital.

Hot air balloon spectacular to light up night at Seattle Center

Staff Report

As dusk falls, the Seattle skyline will come alive with a synchronized “Glow” performance as the balloons ignite their burners, illuminating the night in brilliant color and light. A balloon glow is a stunning spectacle where tethered hot air balloons are inflated and illuminated from within. As their burners ignite, the balloons light up like massive lanterns, radiating waves of heat and vibrant color against the dark sky. The public is invited to witness six towering, 100-foottall hot-air balloons glow

beneath the iconic Space Needle. Seattle Ballooning’s Hot Air Balloon Spectacular is a free, allages event taking place Sunday, June 22, near the International Fountain Lawn at Seattle Center.

The event offers a oncein-a-lifetime experience perfect for families, photographers, date nights, and anyone seeking a magical summer evening. The Seattle Center Armory Food & Event Hall will remain open until 9:30 p.m., and Seattle Center Monorail service will extend to 11 p.m.

Seattle Pride Parade marches on

Submitted

Come get loud at Washington's largest parade featuring an estimated 300,000 attendees and 250-plus community groups, nonprofits, businesses, and civic leaders.

Each year, the free, all-ages Seattle Pride Parade culminates Pride Month on the last Sunday of June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion.

This year’s theme, Louder, honors those who broke the silence and sparked change, and those who still rise against hate today. It’s a promise to amplify every

voice in our community and a reminder that our joy, love, and resilience are acts of care for ourselves and those to come.

“This is not a time to be quiet. It is not a time to be a bystander or to allow others to stand by while bullies — those who were elected and those who were not — try to harm us. Try to erase us. Try to silence us. We’re not going to let that happen, said Seattle Pride executive director Patti Hearn. “We will stand up. We will speak up. We will get loud.”

The Seattle Pride Parade takes place in downtown Seattle along 4th Avenue (between Union Street and Denny Way). The day kicks off at the Westlake Park stage with pre-show entertainment at 10 a.m., followed by the parade which begins at 11 a.m.

Congresswoman Emily Randall and Cheer Seattle will serve as this year’s grand marshals.

“The first Pride I ever went to was Seattle Pride — the summer after my first year of college. I had just come out to myself, and I came home and volunteered at Pride. As a young queer person from Kitsap County, being surrounded by such a joyful, welcoming community was incredibly meaningful,” Rep. Randall said.

“So, being part of Pride this year isn’t just about being Washington’s first out queer member of Congress — it’s about what this moment can mean for someone attending their very first Pride, maybe from a small town, maybe just coming out, maybe looking for that same sense of belonging I found all those years ago.” Party at Legacy Drag Brunch Fundraiser

King County ramps up traffic patrols to combat spike in summer driving deaths

Since 2019, the number of fatal crashes involving speeding has increased 52%.

King County is deploying extra high-visibility enforcement patrols to ensure county roadways are safe during the summer months.

The patrols are law enforcement operations designed to reduce dangerous driving behaviors by increasing law enforcement presence in high-risk areas. This patrol expansion is part of Washington state's “100 Safe Days of Summer” program, which works to keep roads safe.

The patrols were deployed on Friday and will continue through Labor Day weekend, which is known to be the deadliest period for drivers and pedestrians.

According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, there were 253 fatal crashes between June and September last year.

Continue the celebration at

Memorial Stadium open house June 26

It’s lights out for the Seattle Public Schools’ iconic Memorial Stadium at Seattle Center … at least for now, as the stadium prepares for a two-year $140 million transformation beginning this summer. But first, the community is invited to an open house event to relive their memories, say a fond farewell, and learn about the exciting plans for Memorial Stadium’s future.

The stadium doors will be open for the public to purchase a bite to eat from one of the onsite food trucks and to picnic on the

stadium turf while enjoying live music – including performances from Seattle Public Schools’ AllCity Marching Band – and getting a keepsake photo from a 360-degree photo booth.

The free event is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 26 at Memorial Stadium (401 5th Ave. North) on the Seattle Center campus.

For additional information – and to submit your favorite Memorial Stadium memories and photos for display online and on the stadium screen – visit SeattleCenter.com/ Memorial-Stadium.

King County Traffic Safety Coalition for more information on program funding, but did not receive a responsepublication.

“Target Zero” is a WTSC program to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities on Washington roadways to zero by 2030. However, despite the program's efforts, King County has seen traffic deaths occur at a high rate in recent years. In 2023, there were 167 deaths on county roadways, the most ever recorded.

Despite the record number of fatalities, a recent King County Target Zero Coalition press release notes that progress has been made in the state’s efforts to improve road safety, including data showing that 78% of Washingtonians don’t drive after drinking. However, substance use still remains one of the leading causes of deadly crashes in King County.

Auto insurance rate increases are slowing down in 2025 compared to previous years

It’s probably not quite the break Washington state drivers were hoping for, but the rate of increase in the cost of auto insurance appears to be slowing down.

“I checked the numbers just to see where we're at for 2025 through six months, and we're at 1.8%,” said Aaron VanTuyl, communications manager at the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner, noting that’s not likely won’t show up in premium rates for the remainder of the year but should result in much smaller increases for 2026.

“Last year it was up 17.5% and in 2023 the average for that was 24.7%,” he added.

Rates dipped for most drivers just after the pandemic because there were far fewer vehicles on the road and, as a result, far fewer accidents and claims.

VanTuyl explained that OIC must approve annual rate adjustments for insurance providers.

“We’re required to approve rate changes as long as they are adequate and not excessive or unfair,” he said. “What that means is there's a process in place for rates to come in and be evaluated, and actuaries have to take a look and basically make sure that the insurance companies are accounting for the need to increase rates, so we can keep pace with the cost of claims and to pay out administrative costs.”

According to VanTuyl, OIC’s experts spend months making sure they can legally justify the rate change insurance companies are requesting.

According to AutoInsurance. com, the average cost of full

coverage car insurance in the state of Washington in 2024 was $1,452 per year, which translates to about $121 per month. Rates can be dramatically higher for those who have been involved in an auto accident, received a speeding ticket, or have committed other driving infractions.

According to an AutoInsurance.com report, “Teen drivers face the highest auto insurance rate in every state. In Washington, the average annual cost of full coverage for drivers aged 16 to 19 is $4,294, compared to an average of $2,755 for drivers in their 20s.”

Like the report's authors, VanTuyl OIC suggests shopping around for a better rate.

“We do recommend people shop around, because, like the study shows, you can usually reduce costs by getting a new policy somewhere else,” he said. “And the other thing to look into is maybe if you've got an older car and it's already paid off, and all, maybe you don't need full coverage. Talk to an agent or broker, and ask them about discounts, and ask if switching to somewhere else can get you a better deal.

On June 7, dozens of families walked along Queen Anne Avenue for the Queen Anne Elementary School Art Walk.

Submitted

On June 7, dozens of families walked along Queen Anne Avenue for the Queen Anne Elementary School Art Walk. For the event, titled “Postcards from Queen Anne,” 11 host businesses along the Ave displayed art from students at Queen Anne Elementary depicting scenes from the neighborhood.

Walk participants visited the host businesses to view the art and stamp their “passports.” Those who completed their passports - getting a stamp from each business - were rewarded with a prize: a multicolored pen.

The event was the brainchild of Queen Anne Elementary art teacher,

Lauren Appel, with support from the Queen Anne Community Council and the Queen Anne Chamber. The event was a success with a great turnout, sunny weather, and new connections made between local businesses and neighborhood residents. The Art Walk would not have been possible without the generous volunteers: Caroline Davis, Carol Olwell, and Laura Corvi; and host businesses: Queen Anne Frame & Gift (who provided mats), Queen Caphe, Vixen Collection, Storied at Home, Queen Anne Book Co., Just Poke, Avenue Orthodontics, Vitality Medispa, La Pasta, Bethany Presbyterian Church, and Wag N’ Wash.
