Eatonville’s Miley King represents Cruisers in Germany with NBC Basketball travel team

Eatonville High School senior Miley King spent part of her summer representing her hometown and honoring the memory of a fallen Cruiser on basketball courts across Germany.

King, a three-year member of the Eatonville girls’ basketball program was selected to join NBC Basketball’s International Travel Team for an 11-day tour overseas, playing alongside athletes from the United States and Canada.

The invitation came after King attended NBC’s overnight basketball camps the past two summers.

She was the only player on the team to be recommended directly by her camp coaches and the camp director, bypassing a tryout.

King began the trip by meeting her new teammates from Montana, Alaska and Canada, and coaches from Colorado at a twoday camp in Black Diamond. She

was quickly named a team captain, started every game in Germany, and played all five positions on the court.

She averaged more than 12 points per game, posted a careerhigh 22 in one win, and led her team in blocked shots. Her defensive contributions also included

rebounds and forced turnovers. NBC’s squad went 3-3 against local German teams, which included both high school players and some of the country’s top adult talent.

When she first got to camp, King

Pierce County beaches closed due to shellfish biotoxin

Submitted of PSP can cause severe illness and death, which can occur in less than 30 minutes in some cases.

Washington State Department of Health closed beaches in Pierce County to the harvest of all species of shellfish because of biotoxins. The closure includes the shoreline from Days Island and Point Fosdick north to the King and Kitsap County lines, including Commencement Bay, Colvos Passage and the Narrows.

High levels of a biotoxin known as paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) caused the closure, which applies to recreational mussel, clam, and oyster harvesting within these areas.

Shellfish you buy in stores and restaurants are still safe to eat.

What is paralytic shellfish poison (PSP)?

Some species of microscopic algae produce PSP. This biotoxin affects the nervous system and paralyzes muscles. High levels

What are the symptoms?

Tingling of the lips and tongue, which may begin minutes or up to two hours after eating toxic shellfish, are early symptoms. Later symptoms may include:

■ Tingling in fingers and toes.

■ Loss of control of arms and legs.

■ Difficulty breathing.

■ Nausea.

■ Sense of floating.

If someone consumes enough toxin, muscles of the chest and abdomen become paralyzed — including muscles used for breathing — and the person can suffocate.

What should I do if I think I have PSP?

If symptoms are mild, call your health

care provider and the Health Department. If symptoms are severe, call 911 or have someone take you to the emergency room immediately.

How can I protect myself from PSP?

The Washington Department of Health regularly tests shellfish for PSP and closes areas that have unsafe levels. Before harvesting any kind of shellfish, check DOH’s Shellfish Safey Map or call the Marine Biotoxin Hotline at (800) 562-5632. You will find which recreational areas are closed because of biotoxins. Public beaches that allow harvesting sometimes have closure signs, but don’t assume a beach is safe if you don’t see signs. Questions? Savvy Senior: Does Medicare cover ambulance rides

Dear Savvy Senior, A few months ago, I took an ambulance to the hospital emergency room because I

company. Doesn’t Medicare cover ambulance rides?

Frustrated Beneficiary

Dear Beneficiary, Yes, Medicare does cover emergency ambulance services and, in limited cases, nonemergency ambulance services too, but only when they’re deemed medically necessary

and reasonable.

So, what does that means?

First, it means that your medical condition must be serious enough that you need an ambulance to transport you safely to a hospital or other facility where you can receive care that Medicare covers.

If a car or taxi could transport you without endangering your health, Medicare won’t pay. For example, Medicare probably won’t pay for an ambulance to take someone with an arm fracture to a hospital. But if the patient goes into shock, or is prone to internal bleeding, ambulance transport

does so by accepting books and other donations and conducting book sales during the year. All of the funds are used to supplement the various library programs that enrich the local community.

To learn more about the group, contact Mike Eaton at 253-310–7709 or reach him in person at the library any Friday. There is no obligation. Application forms to join the organization are available at the library.

WorkSource Tacoma Center reopens Eric Neal set to lead Arbor Health

The Tacoma location of WorkSource Pierce has reopened for inperson services after a temporary closure caused by water damage.

WorkSource Pierce leadership has worked with the building’s property management team to complete repairs and restore the center. They extend gratitude to customers, partners, and staff for flexibility and continued commitment to service during the closure.

During the closure, partners provided workforce services to

customers at alternate locations throughout Pierce County, including the Goodwill Milgard Work Opportunity Center and the WorkSource South Hill Mall location. Partners also supported customers through virtual appointments, online workshops, and training.

The WorkSource One-Stop Center, located at 2121 S. State St., has resumed regular hours of

operation, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customers have access to career services, including resume support, job search assistance, workshops, training programs, and in-person appointments at the Tacoma Center.

Remote and alternate access site services will continue to be available throughout the county for those who prefer a different location or method of support. A list of access sites can be found at worksource-pierce.org/locations.

Report: WA lost more than 3,700 farms in 5 years; lawmaker blames regulations

Washington state loses on average two farms a day, with more than 3,700 farms lost between 2017 and 2022, according to the United States Department of Agriculture Census of Agriculture and noted in the recently released “Mental Health and Suicide Prevention for Agricultural Producers and Workers” report compiled by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

Rep. Tom Dent, R-Moses Lake, secured funding in the 2024 supplemental operating budget to establish the WSDA-led work group that helped create the report.

WSDA’s work group included lawmakers, experts from Washington State University, behavioral health authorities and others, providing recommendations on mental health and suicide prevention for agricultural producers, farm workers and their families.

“The agriculture and rural mental health issues we’ve known were high, and suicide rates were high,” Dent told The Center Square on Tuesday. “I

KING

From page 1

wanted to start looking at what the issue really is.”

The report cites many factors, including the rising cost of agricultural production.

“Economic hardship is just one element that has the potential to exacerbate mental health risks further,” the report notes.

“For example, due to a high need for loans, borrowers are required to tolerate high financial risk. Loans that are unable to be paid lead to financial uncertainty and poverty.”

“What some of us have known is that we’ve been overregulated. We're regulating our agriculture producers into this unaffordable place to be, right?” said Dent, who owns a farm outside Moses Lake.

Dent explained that he rented out half of his farmland to make ends meet this season.

“Because I have animals to feed, in the last couple of years I'd have made more money if I had just paid the water and power and not grown anything,” he said.

“For two decades, Washington’s suicide rate has consistently exceeded the national average. From 2020 to 2022, the suicide

opened her gear bag to find she’d been assigned No. 33, the number worn by Eatonville High School football player Jason Naro, who tragically passed in 2023. She saw it as a way to represent Eatonville and to carry Naro’s memory by representing the values he stood for on an international stage.

“I was pretty nervous going into this, not knowing what to expect,” King said. “But it was nice knowing that we all were in the same situation and were all being given a fair chance to earn our spot and playing time. I truly loved the friendships

rate for agricultural workers in Washington State was 21.1 per 100,000 people, compared with 14.9 per 100,000 for the state’s general population,” the report states.

According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, farmers have suicide rates up to three times higher than the national average.

“A multitude of factors –ranging from weather patterns and commodity prices to questions about legacy, access to farm labor, health care – all negatively impact this vital community of food providers … leading to mental health difficulties and, in the worst case, to death by suicide,” the report says.

“I cannot support a family when I have to pay $15 a bin to process my apples but only get $5 a bin on the market,” one Washington farmer was quoted in the report.

Dent has pushed for a suicide and mental health crisis line dedicated to the agricultural community.

“I knew 988 was a good thing, but I was concerned that people in the agricultural world wouldn't use it, OK? I really believe that we should maybe have a

I built with these girls and my coaches, and it felt amazing having everyone be so supportive and encouraging.”

King, who broke her wrist just two months before the trip, credited former Eatonville teammate Bailey Anderson, who made a similar overseas trip in 2023, for helping calm her nerves.

“I’m excited to take the experiences I’ve gained in Germany and use them on the court for my upcoming senior season,” King said. “I’m also looking forward to a fresh start with our new coach and seeing what we can do on the court together.”

NBC Camps founded more than 50 years ago, hosts basketball and

separate line for agriculture,” he emphasized.

The report recommends integrating “988 and an AgriStress Response hotline staffed with two positions who have Washington-specific agricultural knowledge and agricultural lived experience.”

The Farm Aid hotline is 1-800-FARM-AID. It's a resource for farmers who need support and connections with various resources and services.

988 is the suicide lifeline. It provides immediate and confidential support for individuals in emotional distress or experiencing a mental health crisis, including those at risk of suicide.

Dent said he has changed his approach to the issue.

“As we got into this, I shifted my focus away from the prevention part, and my focus became solving issues that are pushing people to suicide and pushing people into a mental health crisis,” he explained. “This regulatory environment is way bigger than I thought.” Regulations affecting farmers and ranchers include changes in labor laws and environmental restrictions.

REMEMBERING NO. 33

— JASON NARO

Jason Naro was a beloved Eatonville High School football player who wore #33 whose life was cut short in 2023. Known for his competitive spirit, work ethic and kindness toward teammates, Naro wore No. 33 on the field. That number has become a symbol of remembrance in the Eatonville community, appearing on signs, shirts and in tributes at school events.

Arbor Health announces the appointment of Chief Executive Officer Eric Neal, who will take over the position on Aug. 25. Neal comes to Arbor Health with over 35 years of healthcare management and leadership experience. He entered the medical field as a laboratory technician in Manchester, Conn. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in healthcare management from Jefferson College of

Second, the ambulance must take you to the nearest appropriate medical facility. If you choose to be transported to a facility farther away because the doctor you prefer has staff privileges there, expect to pay a greater share of the bill. Medicare will only cover the cost of ambulance transport to the nearest appropriate facility and no more.

Medicare may also pay for an emergency flight by plane or helicopter to the nearest appropriate medical center if the trip would take too long on the ground and endanger your health.

Nonemergency Situations

Medicare may also cover ambulance transportation in some cases when you’re not facing a medical emergency. But to receive this coverage, your doctor needs to write an order stating that an ambulance is medically necessary because other ways to get you to an appointment could endanger your health.

For example, if you’ve been diagnosed with endstage renal disease, Medicare may pay if you have a doctor’s order stating that it is medically necessary for you to use an ambulance to take you to and from a dialysis center.

You also need to know that in nonemergency situations, ambulance companies are required to give you an Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage or ABN if they believe Medicare may not

pay. This lets you know that you will be responsible for paying if Medicare doesn’t.

Ambulance Costs

Ambulance rides can vary from several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on where you live and how far you’re transported.

Medicare Part B pays 80 percent of the Medicareapproved ambulance rides after you’ve met your annual Part B deductible ($257 in 2025). You, or your Medicare supplemental policy (if you have one), are responsible for the remaining 20 percent.

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it must cover the same services as original Medicare, and may offer some additional transportation services. You’ll need to check with your plan for details.

How to Appeal

If an ambulance company bills you for services after Medicare denies payment, but you think the ride was medically necessary, you can appeal – see Medicare.gov, click on “Providers & Services” followed by “Claims, Appeals, and Complaints.” To help your case, ask the doctor who treated you for documentation that you needed an ambulance. If you need some help, contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), who can help you file an appeal. Go to ShipHelp.org or call 877-839-2675 for contact information.
