COST OF LIVING CRISIS: WHY YOU SHOULD REVIEW YOUR BUDGET AND PLANS
The cost of living is rising. In the 12 months to July 2022, inflation was 10.1% – the first time price rises have been in double digits since 1982.
There are several factors contributing to rising inflation, including the conflict in Ukraine, which has disrupted energy and food supplies.
Energy bills are set to become one of the largest outgoings for families. Several increases to the energy price cap, which is set by Ofgem, mean the cost of energy has already soared.
The price cap will increase again in October and the average home’s energy bill will reach £3,549 a year. It’s expected that the price cap will rise further in January 2023.
Now is the ideal time to review your budget
Keeping track of your finances during the cost of living crisis is crucial.
In the short term, you should review your budget. Can your budget absorb the higher costs, or do you need to make lifestyle changes? Will rising energy prices mean you need to be more mindful of energy use or reduce expenses in other areas?
While the headline inflation figure can give you an idea of how prices are changing, your personal inflation rate may be very different. If you commute long distances, for instance, the steep rise in fuel costs may mean your outgoings rise more than you expect.
Calculating how your regular costs have changed in the last year can help you better manage your finances.

The steps you take now could affect your long-term plans

While it’s important to focus on how the cost of living crisis is affecting your finances now, don’t forget to consider the long-term effects too.
Research suggests that some people are cutting back on outgoings that could improve their long-term financial security.
According to Canada Life, 11% of adults are considering pausing their pension contributions, or have already done so.
While pausing contributions for a few months may seem like it will have little effect on your retirement, it can be larger than you think. The power of compounding means that pausing pension contributions for just a year could reduce the value of your pension at retirement by 4%.

Brighton Photo Fringe 2022
My personal involvement is to be part of a group of nine photographers calling ourselves the TIDES group.
This will be our third exhibition which, once again, will be displayed on Brighton beach, just below the Grand Hotel a short walk to the east of the i360.
This exhibition site has been in place since 2016 and was initially intended to house our exhibition for the one month duration of that years Photo Fringe. However, it became very popular and has since been copied both in Brighton and Worthing so has remained in place. TIDES photographers are all members of Brighton and Hove Camera Club so we decided to share the space with the club in between Photo Fringe events so the exhibited photo graphs change every few months.

This year our project concentrates on the Madeira Drive area which sadly fell into
disrepair but is now undergoing extensive restoration. Each TIDES group member has chosen to document this area in a personal way. My own four images reflect on the demise and ongoing restoration using re ality and metaphor to express my sadness at the decline as well as my hope for the future.
My image above is one which didn’t make the final cut.
You can view other ‘near misses’ from TIDES members on our Facebook group page: www.facebook.com/groups/tides3 www. instagram.com/shoreham_steve

Secret places
In the Victor Book For Boys Annual 1973 was the illustration ‘Flying Freaks’ featuring drawings of eccentric looking planes. One was of a tail-less plane with a rear-mounted canard-wing and rear-mounted propeller engine. Two stubby fins were mounted to the front, on top of the plane. It was referred to in the annual’s description as a Miles Tandem.
George Herbert Miles was born on the 28th of July 1911 at Portslade, East Sussex. His father owned the Star Model Laundry where George’s elder brother Fred built an aeroplane. Fred went on to establish the Southern Aircraft Company at the fledgling Shoreham Airport in 1929. After completing his education, George joined his brother in the business manufacturing the Miles Martlet single-seat biplane. Maxine “Blossom” Freeman-Thomas purchased the first Martlet and learned to fly with Fred.
Leaving George to manage the company at Shoreham, Fred joined Phillips & Powis Aircraft at Woodley in Berkshire. During the 1930s George then joined Woodley as engine manager and test pilot. The Miles brothers established a reputation for cutting edge revolutionary aircraft design and attracted the attention of the Air Ministry. In 1940, during the Second World War, Hurricane and Spitfire fighter pilots who took part in the Battle Of Britain had initially and quickly learned to fly in the Miles Master and Miles Magister training aircraft.
The Miles Aircraft Company was established in 1941 with Fred as chairman and managing director. George became chief designer but his unconventional thinking led to a tumultuous relationship with the Air Ministry. They didn’t approve of his designs and so he didn’t reveal them until the prototype of an aircraft was actually built. George may have transferred some of his projects to Shoreham for the initial design stage to maintain secrecy from the government as well as from the enemy. One aircraft he created was the M.35 ‘Libellula’ tandem wing single-seat fighter. It was 20 foot long with a wingspan
of 20 foot for both its forward and rear wings. George had designed the plane to operate from aircraft carriers. The idea was that with the plane’s cockpit being in the nose and the engine in the tail it allowed for the pilot to have an unobstructed view of the ship’s deck. Test pilots refused to fly the M35 so George flew it himself. At first he couldn’t get it to take off but worked out that if the throttle was closed quickly the plane jumped into the air. On its maiden flight on the 1st of May of 1942, George found he could barely control the aircraft, as its centre of gravity was incorrect. By adding ballast to correct the problem later flights proved successful and the strange looking craft was proven airworthy. However the Air Ministry infuriated by George’s secrecy during the war rejected the fighter. This was despite them being impressed enough with the design to order a prototype larger version that was intended to be an aircraft carrier based bomber. This became know as the M39. Eventually neither plane went into production.

Secret places cont’d.

In 1943 the Air Ministry commissioned the Miles Brothers to build the M.52. This was the world’s first jet aircraft and would be capable of breaking the sound barrier. George designed a stubby wing rocket with moveable tail fins and the pilot packed into the nose cone. Converting a Mile Falcon piston engine plane to test the design, the plane became known as the ‘Gillette’ after the razor sharpness of its wings. The design was proved to fly and a prototype of the M52 jet went into production. The plane was almost complete when in 1946 Sir Stafford Cripps Minister of Aircraft Production cancelled the project.
Fred Miles received a letter stating ‘Man will never fly faster than sound.’ The Miles brothers were then ordered to give the M52 design to the Bell Aircraft Company in America. In 1944 the Bell X1, which was almost identical in design to the Miles M52 was completed. On the 14th of October 1947, Major Chuck Yeager, of the United States Air force, made the first supersonic flight in the Bell-X1 The

partnership triangle of government and American companies was so strained that the Miles brothers decided to go back to civilian aviation. Their company now called Miles Aviation and Transport returned to its parental home of Shoreham Airport. Among the curious projects undertaken by it were a flying van and an amphious car. Judy Upton

Goodbye Sunny Short Wearing Summertime
It’s officially Autumn... all our little darlings are heading back to school, the weather has turned and no one knows what to wear, so a classic combo of flip flops and ski coat it is!
So what should men everywhere be wearing this Autumn?
For the business men and suit wearers amongst you make sure your jackets are double breasted and have power shoulders!
Going casual? Overalls and baggy jeans are in, they made a reappearance during Covid when we were all locked up inside, feeling cosy and they are set to stay… for at least this season anyway!

Speaking of cosy, faux-fur (emphasis on the faux!) Nana knits and tank tops are around this season to keep us wrapped up warm. The Autumn colours for 2022 are Monochrome if you are feeling colourful add a splash of pink, red or animal print. We can’t wait to see what you all are wearing in the barber chair..hint it better not be the previously mentioned ski coat and flip flops!
