VOLUME THREE | ISSUE ONE

A Colorful Life hat has the power to lift your mood, boost your confidence and beautify your surroundings? Color!! After what seemed like an endless winter of isolation and persistent pandemic worries, our creative team was more than ready to jump into the production of our spring issue. The magazine you now hold is our first “Color Issue,” and inside you will discover a compilation of stories that celebrate all things bright and beautiful. Color can have a powerful effect on the way we experience the world around us, and this is especially true in our home environment. Our cover story, “Falling in Love With Colorful Spaces,” reveals how local interior designers have used vibrant paint, tile, fabrics and wallcoverings to add personality to South Shore residences. If you’re not feeling ready to redecorate, adding a vase of fresh spring flowers is a simple way to add a pop of color to your home. We reached out to florist Meryl Lee Pinette, founder of Merrily Blooms in Scituate, and she provided a list of her top tips for creating do-it-yourself flower arrangements. Writer Jen McInerney’s story, “Getting Back to Baking,” showcases another type of beautiful bloom—of the sugar cookie variety. She interviewed Kingston resident Kacey Medeiros, who pivoted away from a wedding planning career to launch Le Sucre Bake Shop. Her exquisitely decorated custom sugar cookies and cakes are as elegant as they are delicious. Another colorful feature, “Art Couture,” takes a look inside the home studio of Quincy-based fashion illustrator Holly Nichols. Amazing live sketching skills have made Nichols a VIP at New York Fashion Week and her newly published how-to book shares tricks for transforming colorful ribbons of ink into visions of flowing silk and chiffon gowns. For the feature “Stay Golden,” local writer and photographer Kate Rogan spent an afternoon with Scituate entrepreneur Robbin Mangano, the founder of Wave Collective and the New England-inspired lifestyle brand, The Golden Cod. Since we love shopping local, we also spotlighted colorful home decor from local boutiques and gifts that capture the essence of life on the South Shore. Lastly, we’re super excited for our upcoming summer issue, which will feature our annual Best of the South Shore winners. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram @southshorehls and join us as we celebrate the amazing local businesses on the South Shore.

A Fresh Look for

Spring

Photography by Kate Rogan

Want to say goodbye to drab “quarantine” hair? Charles “Buddy” Dudley, acclaimed hair color expert and cofounder of Charles David Salons & Spas in Hanover and Plymouth, has got you covered. Check out his helpful tips and hair color trends for golden blondes, smoke-show brunettes, gorgeous gray, and more. Hair color by Charles Dudley

SUN-KISSED BLONDE The resurgence of the blonde will be very strong this spring and summer. As the spring months start to turn a little warmer, the trend will be lighter, brighter blondes. Also, the gray look on bleached hair is here to stay for a little while. The new Pantone shades for this year are gray and yellow and the blondes will rock these looks for summer.

Hair color by Charles Dudley

GRAY ENHANCEMENT If you’re noticing more gray hair and you want to minimize the frequency of your salon visits, embracing the gray may be a good choice. Your stylist can place lighter and deeper charcoal-hued strands to enhance the color you already have and make your grow-out seamless. Pink or olive skin tones work best with this look and bright blue or brown eyes complete the palette. Eyebrows should be perfectly shaped and free from grays and cool makeup shades look best. In the words of famed New York City hair color guru Beth Minardi, “To just go gray is to surrender, to be sensational silver is a choice.”

RAVISHING REDS Red hair is always spectacular when done correctly. When you find a colorist that knows their reds, stay with them. Reds can be tough, but a skilled colorist will know which shade of red is right for your skin tone. Cooler, paler complexions warrant the ruby and burgundy shades, while peachy complexions scream for coppers and golden reds. This year you will see both, but with much more concentration on the cooler reds and burgundy browns.

Brown hair doesn’t have to be boring. This year, browns will be accented with gorgeous honey and bronze. Think of a dark chocolate brown with ribbons of caramel and cinnamon running through. It’s also the return of the chunky highlight (but not the chunks that we were rocking in the 90s). These are wide pieces with a very diffused root, much like our favorite balayage looks.

maintain the look of healthy hair. What we will see a lot of this year for the fashion tones are the corals, peaches and marine blues. Remember that the hair must be pre-lightened to a pale yellow to be able to accept the proper shade and get the desired results. This can create an enormous amount of damage if not done properly, so be sure to have your color done by a professional colorist.

Keeping Things Rolling at Funtastics BY JENNIFER H. MCINERNEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACK FOLEY

Patti Miller, the founder of Funtastics in North Scituate Village, remembers vividly (and fondly) the very first child who signed up for her gymnastics program in 1987—a 3-year-old girl named Siobhan. Fast-forward 33 years: Siobhan Karlberg now sits behind the Funtastics reception desk reminiscing with Miller about their three decades together—and how it all nearly came to an abrupt halt last summer. “From my very first class, I was hooked,” Karlberg recalls of her childhood experience. She became a fixture on the mats, trampoline, balance beam and bars. As a teenager, Karlberg assumed the role of junior teacher, assisting younger students to master these same gymnastics skills, and continued teaching as an adult. In addition to laying the foundation for future athletics, gymnastics teaches important life skills. “Students learn strength, coordination, flexibility, self-discipline, how to set goals, how to challenge themselves, and gain confidence and independence,” says Miller. On March 13, 2020, Funtastics closed its doors in accordance with statewide COVID-19 shutdown protocols. Weeks of waiting turned into months, during which time the gymnastics equipment remained untouched except for regular cleaning and sanitizing. “We were ready to reopen as soon as we were allowed to, but the reopening date kept getting pushed back again and again,” says Miller. According to the state’s reopening plan, Funtastics fit into Phase Three. With the Funtastics building lease looming, Miller faced the most difficult

24

SPRING 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

decision of her career. She held a staff meeting to inform her employees of her predicament. “I kept thinking to myself, ‘I’m going to be 65—what am I going to do?’ ” says Miller. “I wanted to remember Funtastics as it had always been, with lots of kids jumping, playing and running up to hug me and say, ‘Miss Patti, I did it!’” Meanwhile Karlberg, who was away in Maine at the time, missed the meeting and had no idea that the fate of Funtastics hung in the balance. Afterward, Miller sent out an e-mail announcing the closure of her gymnastics business, prompting a flurry of calls and texts to Karlberg from concerned friends wondering what could be done to save the business. Karlberg found herself in a state of denial, unable to imagine a future without Funtastics in it. Her husband, Jared, a local fisherman, encouraged her to embrace the moment as an opportunity she hadn’t previously considered, and suggested that she could take over the business. As stay-at-home mom of three children, ages 3, 4 and 6, Karlberg already had her hands full, but after careful (and quick) consideration, Karlberg decided to take the leap. “I realized that maybe it was meant to be,” says Karlberg. “This is my passion.”

Funtastics officially reopened its doors on September 21, with a modified schedule to accommodate deep disinfecting. There is currently a waitlist for classes. The gym offers recreational and competitive programs for kids in pre-school through age 18, which includes overall fitness conditioning, tumbling skills, and strength-building on a variety of gymnastic apparatus. There is also a “Ninja” class offered for children ages 3.5 to 8, “who want to jump, roll, flip, swing and climb in a safe environment with instruction.” The class includes a kung fu warm-up, obstacle courses and other challenges, as well as an introduction to martial arts. As Funtastics celebrates 34 years in business, Karlberg is happy to be continuing the legacy of her predecessor. For more information about Funtastics, visit funtasticsma.com.

Just Add Salt Water

A passion for community and coastal living inspired a Kingston couple to create 3N3 Apparel and the Salty Harbor Shop.

JACK FOLEY

BY KATE SHEEHAN

As the summer season kicked off in July—a mere four months into a global pandemic—Brandi and Jared Waitkus made the unlikely choice to leap into entrepreneurship by launching a boating-inspired apparel and accessories business, 3N3 Apparel. For Brandi Waitkus, a pediatric dental hygienist who found herself furloughed during lockdown, it was perfect timing. “If the pandemic didn’t happen, we might never have started this business,” she says. The seeds for 3N3 Apparel were planted years earlier. In 2018, Jared designed a batch of custom hats with a 3N3 logo for a group of friends who shared a love for boating. “3N3 is an easy way to remember the time frame in which you can safely enter and exit the Kingston waterways by boat—three hours before and three hours after high tide,” explains Jared. It’s an uncomplicated concept that reflects the couple’s mission to keep things simple and revel in the breathtaking beauty of coastal life. As the Waitkuses adjusted to life in lockdown with their three children, they found themselves dreaming of being on the water once again. They began creating a few niche items designed to appeal to fellow in-the-know Kingston

residents—products emblazoned with “3N3,” and words like “Ah-Dee-Nah,” (a local landmark for boaters) and “move ovah, plovah” (a cheeky reference to the protected shore birds whose nesting habits wreak havoc for oversand vehicle owners). The couple soon expanded their offerings to include more coastal designs, including a wave, shark, octopus, and “local love” design, all hand-drawn by Jared. Fueled by online screen printing tutorials and with the help of a used printing press, they converted their basement into a production space. “It allows us to print whatever color and design options people want more easily,” says Jared. The Waitkus’ passion for boating and their local community has inspired a range of apparel and stylish accessories. From relaxed T-shirts and sweatshirts to cozy blankets and beach-friendly drinkware, there is something for everyone. They also offer handmade rope bracelets— some named for local landmarks and others finished with whipping twine—that are all secured with nautical knots. Brandi takes pride in bringing the 3N3 ethos to life through the brand’s digital channels while Jared is the creative force. He enjoys the process of experimenting with different art mediums. “I started years ago with watercolors, and they sat on the shelf for a while until Brandi suggested that I pair them with some of my drawings,” he says. The result is a collection of unique and colorful die-cut stickers with lobsters, whales and other designs. The positive response to their work has encouraged the couple to expand their offerings. “During the pandemic, people have been moving away from Amazon and instead are really supporting local makers,” says Brandi. “Community is everything.” In February, the duo introduced their newest project: Salty Harbor Shop, a source for locally made and coastally inspired goods, including (of course) 3N3 Apparel. Their plan is to eventually find a brick-and-mortar space for the Salty Harbor Shop, but in the meantime they

operate through an online marketplace. Shoppers can find makers from across the South Shore and Cape Cod, including Duxbury Saltworks, The Oyster Bag, Miss Lou Makes, Snowy Owl Coffee, Kate Wilkins Art, Doggspot Designs and more. “It’s really exciting, and a bit daunting,” says Brandi, “but it doesn’t feel like work because we love it.”

ituated in Plymouth’s bustling Village Landing Marketplace, Nectar Collective is a women’s clothing and accessories boutique with a strong sense of community. Every Monday, owner Maryann McClellan shares a “Stock The Shop” poll on Instagram, encouraging her followers to choose the pieces of clothing they’d like to see in the store. She takes their feedback seriously. “I want customers to feel like this is their boutique as much as it is mine,” says McClellan. Originally, Nectar Collective was slated to open in April of 2020. However, McClellan was forced to postpone the launch due to COVID-19 restrictions. A former marketing manager who holds a business degree from Bryant University, the Plymouth native was determined to make her dream of owning a boutique come to fruition. She pushed forward, believing that without risk, there can be MARYANN MCCLELLAN

no gain. “Listen, if you can’t stop thinking about it, then you can’t stop working for it,” says McClellan. “I love that quote, it expresses my feelings exactly.” A self-described “one woman show,” McClellan focused her attention on the details of her business before finally welcoming her first customers in June. She knew that opening during a pandemic would require her to come up with unique ways to engage with customers, both digitally and in person. The early success of her business is a testament to her dedication. McClellan’s goal is to ensure that every woman feels confident and beautiful. She makes an effort to source intentional pieces of apparel, jewelry and other products that support a social or environmental cause. Some of her featured products include Aid Through Trade Roll-On Bracelets, a company that employs 200 females artisans in Nepal; Quay Australia sunglasses, which donates to causes such as Change the Record, The Healing Foundation and The Aboriginal Literacy Foundation. She also stocks Ah-dorned crossbody bags, Six Fifty clothing, Capri Blue candles and local brands like Lavender Ali flower prints, Katie Elizabeth greeting cards, and

STAY GOLDEN A Scituate entrepreneur’s stylish lifestyle brand is an ode to New England. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE ROGAN

cituate resident Robbin Mangano is a natural storyteller. Whether bringing a client’s story to life via her public relations and social media marketing company, Wave Collective, or documenting her life on the South Shore to her more than 45 thousand Instagram followers, she has a knack for creating inspiring content. Most recently, she and her husband Jeff Mangano launched a quintessentially New England lifestyle brand—The Golden Cod. With its name inspired by the first industry established in Massachusetts (cod fishing), The Golden Cod brand offers a curated collection of thoughtfully designed jewelry, apparel and home décor. Signature offerings include hand-carved and gilded cods, designed to adorn homes and serve as a symbol of the region’s rich heritage. Similarly, their custom-designed gold coin pendant necklace features a delicate cod design, allowing the wearer to keep an elegant symbol of New England close to their heart.

SPRING 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

We recently sat down with Mangano to learn more about her growing businesses, her popular social platform and what she loves most about living on the South Shore.

What was your goal for The Golden Cod brand? My vision for The Golden Cod is to create a lifestyle brand that is synonymous with New England. Years from now, I’d love for our products to be “musthave” items for any New Englander and visitor.

Do you have a favorite Golden Cod product? My favorite product from The Golden Cod is our coin pendant necklaces. This is the product that actually inspired the entire brand. I own a coin pendant ring from Italy that I never take off, and when I saw and learned more about the gold wooden cod carvings I saw on homes all throughout New England, and cod fishing in general, I thought it would be interesting to incorporate that into a favorite piece of jewelry. The goal was to create a piece of jewelry that locals and tourists would love. I have absolutely no background in jewelry design, so I worked with Jessica Ricci, an amazing jewelry designer based in Providence, Rhode Island, who helped consult on the entire design and manufacturing process for our jewelry. To this day, she still works with us and we’re currently developing a few new pieces that we hope to launch later in 2021.

Your first business, Wave Collective, was founded in 2016. Can you tell us more about the business? Wave Collective, formerly known as R Public Relations, specializes in public relations, social media, content creation and influencer marketing. We are based in the Boston Seaport, so I commute a few days a week up to our office. Pre-pandemic, I loved taking the ferry from Hingham every day, and hope to get back into that routine again one day.

TITLE

You have a strong personal brand, boasting over 45,000 followers on Instagram alone. Can you tell us how you found your voice? My social media voice has always just been my real life voice. I write like I talk. I post photos that I take and love. And my Instagram Stories simply show a behind-the-scenes look of my life, just a bit less filtered. Thankfully, I’ve been able to relate to a lot of people who share a common interest in our region, which helped me build the audience I have today.

The word influencer is often used when people amass a large following. Would you describe yourself as a social media “influencer” or “content creator”? I’d describe myself as a business owner that just happened to build a social media following, using all the strategies that I implement for my own clients. If I had to pick between the two terms though, I’d consider myself a content creator, because of my love for photography and storytelling.

Did your Instagram presence grow organically or was it more strategic? When I first started growing an audience, it was all purely organic. When traveling with my husband on the weekends throughout New England (prekids!), I’d document the entire trip and put photo guides together through my Instagram and blog of things we enjoyed seeing and doing. Whether it was a seaside clam shack in Maine, a sunset boat cruise out of Vineyard Haven, or an oyster tour in Duxbury, it seemed like this was the type of content that my followers started to gravitate towards. Over time, larger social media accounts would share my content, while also tagging and giving me credit, which would then drive their audience to my account. I started to see this happen over and over again, growing my audience by hundreds each day, and that’s when I started to be more strategic. I’d look at what photos performed well (and which didn’t) and would then create more content that people gravitated towards.

52

SPRING 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

Can you give some advice to individuals or followers who also want to build their personal or business brand on Instagram? The two (business vs personal) would be completely different, since I’d recommend that a personal account should not be started with the intention to monetize it, whereas a business on Instagram is of course trying to make money from the account from day one. But, for both personal and business, a few of the most important things you can do to grow an organic audience is be consistent, provide value, create and post quality content, and let your voice shine through in your captions. Over time your audience will find you.

When you’re not working, what are some of your favorite places to spend time on the South Shore? Oh, there are so many, but a few that are my triedand-true spots are Lucky Finn Cafe, Erich’s Clam Shack, Island Creek’s raw oyster bar, boating out to The Spit, beach days at Minot, Donovan Wildcat Trails in Norwell, visiting Scituate Light, and craft beers at both Untold Brewing and Vitamin Sea Brewing.

As the owner of multiple businesses, you wear a lot of hats. Can you give us a peek into what a typical day looks like for you? Every day is so different from the last. But most days consist of a mix of Wave team catch-ups, pitching clients to local and national media, reviewing social media calendars, overseeing photoshoots for both Wave clients and The Golden Cod, coordinating influencer partnerships, conceptualizing the creative for a brand partnership I’m doing for my personal Instagram, brainstorming new product designs with my husband, Jeff, for next season of The Golden Cod, and more.

53

You’re also a parent. How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance? It would be a lie to say I had everything all figured out and that I’ve learned how to balance being both a mom and a business owner. The first step was finding a good local daycare that my daughter enjoys and thrives at. There were a few weeks where we didn’t have daycare during the pandemic and it was nearly impossible to get work done. I know a lot of working parents felt the same way this past year. You want to do it all: be a good mom, a good spouse, a good business owner, and boss. Eventually, it catches up to you. And for me, it meant really learning how to delegate, determine what was important to work on, and what could wait until later.

5 QUICK FACTS ABOUT ROBBIN MANGANO FAVORITE MANTRA? I don’t have a specific mantra I live by, but I’m an extremely visionoriented person. I’m obsessed with the idea of manifestation and often, anything that Wave or The Golden Cod has been able to accomplish, has been from months and years of manifesting and then taking the proactive steps to reach those goals. HOW WOULD YOU FRIENDS AND FAMILY DESCRIBE YOU IN THREE WORDS? Creative, driven and caring. WHAT ARE FIVE THINGS YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? My family, books, my phone, coffee, and my camera. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE 20-YEAR-OLD ROBBIN? That nothing comes easy, and that you’re going to grind it out to accomplish what you want. There’s no such thing as overnight success, no matter how appealing that idea might be. WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Always be kind, in both your professional and personal life.

54

What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date? Hitting the five year mark for Wave Collective. There were many, many ups and downs with the business and a number of setbacks that could have ended the business. But through resilience and building a team of skilled professionals, we were able to get through a lot of hardships, including the pandemic. It was by far my greatest accomplishment that Wave was able to get through 2020 with our entire team that we went into the year with, plus more team members.

Have you mapped out your goals for 2021? A large focus for me this year is building The Golden Cod, as we were set back a bit by the pandemic. I’m excited for opportunities that this next year will present for the brand. Fingers crossed, hopefully by the summer, we’ll be able to travel throughout New England again to introduce The Golden Cod to as many New Englanders as possible. BY MARIA ALLEN

Local designers reveal how vibrant paint, tile, fabrics and wallcoverings can add personality and an uplifting atmosphere to your home. We’re all spending a lot more time at home these days. If you’re tired of staring at white walls and looking for ways to beautify your surroundings, you might want to consider dialing up the color in your home. Since making bold decorating decisions isn’t easy, we asked local designers to share the inspiration behind some of their most brilliantly colored home projects.

BRASS AND BLUE Incorporating both classic and contemporary elements, this bright blue kitchen is a breath of fresh air. Great pains were taken to find just the right shade of blue for this impressive culinary space that was designed by Good Life New England as part of a larger renovation. The winning color--Benjamin Moore Southern Belle 819--is both bold and timeless. The expert interior designers at Violandi + Warner teamed up on the project to guide the client through more of the decorating process. A dramatic blue ombre mosaic glass tile with a fan design was sourced from DiscoverTile at the Boston Design Center. Warm brass accents incorporated throughout the kitchen add character to the space. RADIANT RED GUEST ROOM Allison Mattison, the owner of Trellis Home Design in Hingham, is fearless when it comes to colorful decor, and her clients and followers love her for this. Her design shop, located below her studio, is filled with eyecatching upholstery, lighting and decorative accents. A favorite bedding set by Jane Wilner Designs served as the inspiration for this cherry red guest bedroom in Mattison’s home. A bold banana leaf wallpaper by Pierre Frey sets the tone in the room and is complemented by custom window valances. To temper the red a bit, Mattison pulled in rattan pieces, including a decorative headboard. A Ficxs Reed lounge chair and matching ottoman, purchased at a vintage dealer in Palm Beach, was reupholstered in a Robert Allen fabric with a smaller red and white pattern, so as not to “fight with the other patterns” in the room. A NOD TO NAUTICAL As part of the redesign of a young Hingham couple’s home, Beth Bourque, owner of Beth Bourque Design Studio in Milton, gave the living room a fresh look by incorporating bold color choices. “The homeowners wanted a coastal vibe, but we didn’t want to be kitschy,” explains Bourque. “They had this cool oriental rug with a navy blue, salmon and cream pattern, which inspired the color palette.” Bourque transformed a worn brick fireplace into a strong focal point with a deep shade of blue paint, called “Naval” by Sherwin Williams. A framed oil painting from the couple’s collection found a home in a small niche above the fireplace and brass sconces were added to amplify the elegance. Bourque created a sitting area with a pair of chairs upholstered in a navy ikat fabric by Pindler. A suede and hemp rug by Serena & Lily was placed over the wood floors to bring in a more neutral beach-grass tone, and a bit of shimmer. She completed the look with blue and white curtains from Anthropology, brushed brass curtain rods from West Elm, and a rattan bar cart by Serena & Lily.

A CITRUS TWIST As guests arrive at designer Christine van der Kieft’s Hingham home, they are greeted by a bright, cheerful entryway. Originally an open-air portico, the space was enclosed a few years ago. To help bring the beauty of the outdoors inside, Van der Kieft covered the walls with a verdant Schumacher wallpaper called Citrus Garden in the color Pool. “When we bought our house, it had a little English garden,” says van der Kieft. “I saw this wallpaper and thought it would be a fun play on extending the garden area into our home,” For the floors, she went with a durable Montauk blue slate tile in a herringbone pattern, sourced from Bellew Tile in Rockland. A sweet seating area was created for the hallway by giving an older set of chairs a facelift. The chairs were painted in a saturated Benjamin Moore Deep Royal blue and reupholstered in cotton-linen Romo fabric in a light blue called Skylight. Van der Kieft also had pillows made for the chairs using indoor-outdoor Schumacher Stella Chambray fabric that had a small-scale star print. “I like anything blue,” says van der Kieft, “I just love how the colors make me feel.” Van der Kieft Designs | Hingham | 781-366-4217 | vanderkieftdesigns.com

A STUNNING STUDY The elegance of a newly constructed transitional style home in Cohasset, designed by Heidi Condon Residential Design, is amplified by its beautiful interior decor. Homeowner Barbara O’Neill has worked at The New Upholstery Shop in North Scituate for 18 years and used a favorite Schumacher fabric (Chiang Mai Dragon) as the inspiration for her entire home’s color palette. “I’m someone who really loves greens, blues and creams,” says O’Neill, who chose a vibrant paint, Bainbridge Blue by Benjamin Moore, for the office she shares with her husband. “It was a nice match for the water outside our windows.” A velvet sofa was tucked between the built-in bookshelves to create a cozy reading nook. A large framed mirror, hung over the sofa, lends a grandness to the space. O’Neill finished the look with roman shades made from Osborne & Little fabric and throw pillows featuring Schumacher Tabriz Ikat Velvet. “It’s turned out to be a cozy getaway where we can shut the doors to make a zoom call or relax with a cup of tea and a good book.” Heidi Condon Residential Design | Scituate | 781-545-5700 | heidicondon.com The New Upholstery Shop | Scituate | 781-545-0589

MODERN MAGIC While working on the interior design for a newly constructed contemporary home in Hingham, Sarah Scales, owner of Sarah Scales Design Studio in Milton, created this one-of-a-kind bedroom for a young girl who loves the outdoors. “She’s super into the woods and enchanted forests, so that’s where the concept started,” says Scales. A dynamic Cole & Son wallpaper called Woods sets the tone with a refined birch tree pattern. Keeping with the home’s modern aesthetic, Scales added a custom-made contemporary nightstand from SawTimber Woodworks in Hingham and implemented a color blocking technique for the custom window treatments. The burnt orange hue on the lower part of the drapes lines up perfectly with the windowsills. The same color is echoed in a tiny flower pattern on the Yves Delorme bedding and a trio of abstract art prints displayed over the bed in high-gloss white metal frames sourced from Room & Board. “We included a few girly touches, like the flowers on the bedding, but we kept the look sophisticated so the room would have longevity,” says Scales.

OCEANIC IMPRESSION A classic color combination of navy and white makes a perfect pair in this Cohasset kitchen. The overall design for this versatile space was conceptualized by the award-winning design team at Good Life New England as part of a substantial renovation of the home’s first floor. To contrast the bright white kitchen cabinets, the kitchen island cabinetry was painted a deep navy, and this color was continued into the pantry. The custom cabinetry in both spaces was designed by Good Life New England. The design experts at Violandi + Warner Interiors were brought in to assist the homeowners with the selection of more decorative touches, such as a royale navy artisan glass backsplash tile, sourced from Classic Tile & Stone in Hingham. Galbraith and Paul wallpaper in the pattern Casita helps tie the pantry area together and continues with the navy theme. Adjacent to the kitchen, a window seat cushion was customized with a cheerful Schumacher Tortola fabric in the color Marine and set off with bright green pillows featuring a Schumacher Fuzz design. LIVELY LIME GREEN Every once in a while, a homeowner comes along who wants to toss caution and convention to the wind in favor of unique and exciting decor choices. Such was the case with this brightly colored bathroom, which was part of a much larger renovation in which the experts at Good Life New England completely reimagined the layout of the antique Marshfield home. Violandi + Warner were brought in to help bring the client’s colorful dreams to life. The bathroom features a pink hexagon tile, sourced from Classic Tile & Stone in Hingham, and an eye-catching Schumacher wallpaper in a Chiang Mai Dragon pattern in the color Blush. The vanity, made by Wood Decor Inc., was painted in Sherwin Williams Parakeet green and outfitted with a Brizo Litze Widespread Faucet in polished nickel. PRETTY IN PINK When it came to decorating her cozy waterfront cottage in Duxbury, interior designer Linda Merrill, owner of Linda Merrill Decorative Surroundings, knew she wanted to have a cheerful color palette. “Green has always been my favorite color since I was a little girl, but pink has been a close second,” says Merrill, whose dining room is filled with the colors of a spring garden bouquet. “The colors work so well together—they’re warm and upbeat.” An accent wall, painted with Benjamin Moore Bouquet Rose, sets the tone in the room. Vibrant pink and green window treatments, featuring a Robert Allen Bulverde Peony pattern (discontinued), were custom made by Cathy’s Concepts in Hanover. Merrill designed a custom tablecloth in a light green Faux Bois fabric from Spoonflower for a small circular dining room table and outfitted her Ballard Designs parsons chairs with custom velvet slipcovers from Cathy’s Concepts in Hanover. A vintage settee, sourced from Elite Repeat in Hanover and reupholstered by Merrill with a floral fabric, provides additional seating beneath a gallery wall of framed artwork. “Since most of my furnishings are vintage pieces, I wanted the colors and fabrics to be a youthful counterpart,” says Merrill.

GREEN CHARMER With space at a premium, the design team at Topnotch Design Studio in South Easton made sure to utilize every available inch in this kitchen renovation project. When it came to the color of the custom cabinetry, they settled on Sherwin Williams Mount Etna--a luscious shade of green. “We didn’t want a stark white kitchen,” explains Topnotch founder Patty Winberg. “The paint color added a sense of warmth and charm and tied in well with the wood floors.” They added a small kitchen work table with a walnut butcher block top by Grothouse Lumber (that cleverly conceals a microwave drawer). Built-in cabinets and a tall walnut pantry were created to maximize storage. An unsightly radiator was elegantly enclosed beneath a small window ledge with a decorative brass mesh radiator cover. Winberg enlisted the help of interior designer Kim Shapiro of Nesting Designs in Sharon to help the client with lighting, wall coverings, tile and other finishes. For the countertops and kitchen backsplash, they selected Muse by Viatera, a bright white quartz with smoke-gray veining. Warm brass details were incorporated in decorative hardware and on the custom-made range hood. Shapiro also helped create a small dining area by sourcing a brass table base from Chairish for which she had a custom glass top made. She finished the look with a Meri Drum Chandelier by Oly in frost white. Topnotch Design Studio | South Easton | 508-230-7082 | topnotchds.com Nesting Designs | Sharon | 781-389-1882

TANTALIZING TEAL This Lakeville home was transformed into a bright and cheerful summer getaway, complete with a one-of-a-kind contemporary kitchen designed by Topnotch Design Studio. “The homeowners were from New York and they knew they wanted the kitchen to be bright and fun because it was their vacation home,” says Topnotch founder Patty Winberg. After considering different color options, they settled on painting the top cabinets Sherwin Williams Tantalizing Teal and the lower cabinets with Brushed Aluminum. This color palette was complemented with a beautiful Kohler Farmhouse Sink and glass tile with a mix of silver and turquoise that was used to create a glittering backsplash. The same Caribbean-inspired colors were carried into the bathroom and other rooms in the house. “Not everyone can handle a color this bright, but they were daring clients and it was a fun project to work on,” says Winberg.

BACK TO BAKING

uring the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many South Shore businesses discovered that “business as usual” was no longer an option. This led to a dramatic reimagining of existing business models, with some entrepreneurs “pivoting” in entirely new directions to explore previously untapped opportunities. Such was the case for Kingston entrepreneur Kacey Medeiros, who realized the time had come for her to start over— from scratch. After working in the bustling wedding and eventplanning industry for five years, Medeiros, 29, found herself confronted with a blank calendar. The usual steady stream of weddings and celebrations had been summarily cancelled or put indefinitely on hold. But she didn’t panic. Instead, she preheated her oven, plugged in her stand mixer, and turned to the comfort of one of her favorite pastimes: baking. “As an event-planner, my schedule was always crazy, especially during wedding season. I never had the time to bake before and, suddenly, I had nothing but time,” Medeiros recalls. Baking has always been something that Medeiros enjoyed. Growing up, she would often make cookies with her mom and helped her father cook pancakes on Sunday mornings. She dreamed of opening her own bake shop one day, which led her to study at Johnson and Wales University, where she earned an associate degree in Baking and Pastry Arts and a bachelor’s degree in Food Service Entrepreneurship. During her junior year of college, Medeiros fully immersed herself in the fine art of pastry-making as a student at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Pâtisserie in southern France. While there, she supplemented her studies with visits to patisseries and boulangeries in the region.

72

SPRING 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

Throughout high school and college, Medeiros also became involved with Relay for Life events, which raised money for cancer research. Her experiences eventually led her to pursue a career in event planning and, ultimately, wedding planning. During those first few weeks of quarantine, however, her passion for baking was rekindled. “It was like the universe was telling me to go in this direction and pursue what I’ve always loved,” says Medeiros. Taking advantage of her unexpected downtime, she began experimenting with different sugar cookie recipes and cake flavors, mixing and blending assorted icing colors and perfecting the pastry-decorating skills she’d learned from the experts in France—from fancy, flowing script to intricate details and artistic flourishes. Medeiros shared freshly baked batches of treats with her family, friends and neighbors, who encouraged her to turn her pastime into a profession. Within a few months, Medeiros opened Le Sucre Bake Shop, an online patisserie offering made-to-order, custom-designed sugar cookies, three- and four-layer cakes, and cupcakes for all occasions. With the French word for sugar in its name, the business conjures what Medeiros calls “the homey, warm feeling of a bake shop.”

her clients’ tastebuds and aesthetic sensibilities. Since opening, Le Sucre Bake Shop has catered to an array of specialoccasion themes, from Father’s Day gift sets featuring cookies shaped like golf clubs and backyard grills to elegant snowflakes for winter celebrations and custom creations for baby showers, engagements and wedding announcements. Medeiros aims to produce products that are as beautiful as they are delicious and is always striving to come up with unique designs that set her apart.

73

BACK TO BAKING

Some of her more recent creations have included collections inspired by hit television shows like “Schitt’s Creek” and “The Queen’s Gambit” and elegant “cookie bouquets” made up of cookies resembling roses and other blooms. “Cookies are super popular,” says Medeiros. “Since people can’t really have events and gatherings right now, they’re focusing on special favors—for drive-by baby showers and birthday parades—that are more personal.” To help build her business, Medeiros connected with a group of cookie-artist entrepreneurs, also known as “Cookiers,” on Instagram. “Everyone’s been so generous with advice on what has worked for them,” she says. “Plus, they get what it’s like to make cookies for a living.” Medeiros packages her cookies in heat-sealed bags to preserve freshness. Le Sucre Bake Shop offers local delivery, two-day shipping and pickup in Kingston. In the future, she hopes to open a brick-and-mortar bakery and looks forward to being involved in the wedding and events industry once again—this time, as a source for wedding cakes and custom-decorated cookie favors. For now, however, Medeiros is grateful to play a role in personalizing smaller-scale celebrations for her growing clientele. With every custom confection she bakes, Medeiros helps to make these special events even more memorable—and a whole lot sweeter.

Quincy artist Holly Nichols reveals the magic behind her fabulous fashion illustrations. BY MARIA ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY DERRICK ZELLMANN

A

rainbow of Copic Sketch markers fans out atop a desk in Holly Nichols’ home office. An artist who specializes in fashion illustration, she gently shifts the angle of her wrist and tightness of her grip on her brush-tip markers to transform ribbons of colored ink into visions of flowing silk and sheer chiffon. Nichols has always had a love for art. After graduating from North Quincy High School, she went on to earn a BFA in Studio Art from Endicott College in 2013. Postgraduation, while working part-time jobs to pay the bills, she began doodling images of fashions she loved on drawing pads and bar napkins--dreaming of oneday turning her creative passion into a career. Once Nichols had amassed a collection of fashion sketches, she launched an Instagram account to help showcase her work. It didn’t take long for her unique art to gain attention, especially after a few acclaimed designers started liking and sharing her posts. Thanks to her online art sales, Nichols was eventually able to quit her day job and focus her energy entirely on creating art and building her personal brand. Fast-forward to today and Nichols is now a highly sought-after fashion illustrator with nearly 700,000 Instagram followers from all across the world. She has worked for corporate clients like TRESemmé, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York, Neiman Marcus, Disney, Living Proof, and many more. The Quincy native is known for her highly detailed illustrations of haute couture fashions as well as classic “everyday” lifestyle images. While some of her artistic interpretations of garments come straight from her imagination, others are inspired by the models she has seen strut the runway at New York Fashion Week.

FASHION ILLUSTR ATION

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nichols frequently traveled to New York to take part in live sketching events and enjoyed taking trips to develop new ideas for her portfolio. One of her favorite vacation destinations, the Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club in Bermuda, has added examples of her work to its impressive collection of international art. Over the years, Nichols has created stylized illustrations of famous celebrities, including singers like Beyoncé and actors like Blake Lively. She has also drawn inspirational female figures like Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris. In 2019, Nichols was invited by HBO to illustrate at the New York premier of the television series “Big Little Lies.” “It was a beautiful production and night,” says Nichols, who admits to being a little starstruck when actress Meryl Streep arrived. She also found it amusing when a group of the younger cast members decided to spend the evening hanging out by her art table. To say that Nichols is highly attuned to colors would be an understatement. “I have something called synesthesia,” says Nichols. The condition has been described as a perceptual phenomenon in which the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway (for example, hearing) leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway (such as vision). “Any sound that I hear, I see as a color,” says Nichols. “I also see letters and numbers in specific colors and I experience emotions in color. Even people have different color auras to me.” When it comes to her artwork, one of her favorite colors to work with is called viola. “It’s a light periwinkle color that I’ve always been attracted to,” says Nichols. “It makes me think of serenity, calmness, peace and lightness.”

82

SPRING 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

Nichols enjoys sharing her artistic knowledge with her followers and frequently posts video tutorials, demonstrating her techniques. In March, her first book “Modern Fashion Illustration: Create Trending Stories and Develop a Personal Brand” (Simon & Schuster, March 2021) is being released. The book, which she wrapped up while quarantining at home, features step-by-step instruction on the art of fashion illustration and coloring pages for aspiring illustrators to customize in their own way. Nichols also offers marketing tips for artists seeking to succeed in today’s world of social media. On her website, Nichols also offers an assortment of over 300 art prints, which she personally signs, frames and ships out to customers. She also sells numerous products that feature images of her artwork, from iPhone cases and mugs to wall calendars and watch bands. In addition, Nichols sells tools for aspiring digital illustrators, such as downloadable coloring page templates and customized Procreate palettes and brushes. Like the rest of the world, Nichols is looking forward to spring and the possibility of being able to travel once again (she always packs sketchbooks and her full 300-piece marker collection in case inspiration strikes). In the meantime, she’s happy to be able to stay connected with her online audience, posting images that she hopes her followers find beautiful and inspiring.

DIY FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

10 expert tips for creating a sensational spring flower arrangement. BY MARIA ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE ROGAN

85

DIY FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

fter a long, cold winter, one of the best ways to celebrate the arrival of spring is by filling your home with the color and sweet fragrance of fresh flowers. Depending on the blooms that you choose, flowers have the power to increase the peace and serenity in your living spaces or spark a little excitement and lighten the mood. A beautiful bouquet also makes an ideal gift for a friend or relative who may need a little encouragement or support. Professional floral designers like Meryl Lee Pinette, owner of Merrily Blooms in Scituate, take great care to customize floral arrangements to suit their clients’ needs. “Floral design is an art form for me,” says Pinette, who views every event and special occasion as an opportunity to flex her creative muscles. “I’m always looking for different ways to design and love experimenting with new flowers. Right now, I’m really enjoying creating larger statement pieces.” Pinette has always had a passion for flowers. Three years ago, she decided to leave her corporate job and launch her own floral design business, specializing in gorgeous oneof-a-kind arrangements. Until the pandemic hit last spring, Pinette was also holding handson classes, creating a sense of community around the art of flower arranging. “Working with flowers is so therapeutic,” says Pinette. “You can totally immerse yourself in creating something beautiful. And since no two stems look alike, what you design really is unique every time.” When COVID-19 restrictions made in-person events impossible, Pinette persevered by pivoting her business to focus more on delivery and creating custom arrangements for micro-sized weddings, birthdays, recitals, bereavements and other life occasions. Even in challenging times, Pinette is thankful to be bringing joy to people’s lives and making the world just a little more beautiful.

SPRING 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

CHOOSE YOUR BLOOMS If you’re going the grocery store route, skip the premade bouquets. Instead choose 3-5 varieties of flowers (including one greenery option). Your eye will likely gravitate to a particular flower. Let that bloom be the inspiration for your overall design. A monochromatic color palette makes for a polished and sophisticated look. A multicolor arrangement will have a more relaxed fresh-from-the-garden look and feel. Go with what suits your personality and your home.

SOURCE BY THE SEASON We are lucky to live in an area with great local flower farms and in the summer and fall I would definitely recommend treating yourself to a visit to one of my personal favorites, Cross Street Flower Farm in Norwell. However, if you’re sourcing flowers for a do-it-yourself spring flower arrangement, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are definitely where it’s at.

PICK YOUR VESSEL The container you use to display your flowers doesn’t have to be conventional. I love using old candle holders, for example. Choose an opaque vessel if you don’t want to see the “mechanics” of the stems or the water as it gets dirty. You can also arrange flowers in multiple smaller vases if that would be better suited to the area where you plan to display the flowers.

BEST SPRING VARIETIES Begin by selecting a rock-star flower that you really like (parrot tulips are perfect for this time of year), a filler flower (roses or lisianthus are great) and something to add structure and dimension (snapdragons or hyacinth are ideal for this). You’ll also want to pick out some greens and a finishing detail flower that is a little unexpected that will add a different texture (ranunculus are a favorite because they add a soft feminine flair). Make sure the flowers you choose are firm and standing upright to ensure that they’re at peak freshness.

www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

87

DIY FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

PREPARE YOUR MATERIALS Use the flower food packet that comes with the bunches of grocery store blooms and dissolve in cold water to prolong the life of the flower (use warm water if you need the blooms to open more). Prep your flowers by removing any leaves that would hit the water line (and add bacteria) and remove any petals that are looking less than perfect.

GET CREATIVE Now comes the fun part—designing your floral arrangement! Begin by placing your greens in your vase and then move from the hardiest flowers to the most fragile, which you’ll use as visual accents at the end (along with adding a few more pieces of greenery). Cut each flower stem at a 45-degree angle and vary the heights of the flowers to add dimension. To ensure a natural look, make sure there is some “spillover” of your flowers or greenery over the sides of the vase and clusters with a few of the same type of bloom together. Lastly, if the flowers are looking too flat, make small adjustments by pulling stems out of the arrangement a bit to add more height.

EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE If you’re using a larger vase, flowers may start to shift as you work. To solve this problem, you can set up your vessel with something to prevent your blooms from moving around. My favorite trick is to cut a small piece of chicken wire, loop it around and wedge it into the top of the vase. This adds support while giving you holes to place the blooms in. Determine whether your arrangement needs to look good from all sides or if it will be a frontfacing bouquet. If you’re doing a centerpiece, for example, and need the flowers to look good from all sides, be sure to turn your arrangement regularly as you work.

88

SPRING 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

KEEP THEM FRESH Check water levels daily, especially during the first 1-2 days when the flowers will take in the most water. Remove flowers as they die to prevent bacteria in the arrangement and keep your flowers away from direct sunlight and heat for lasting freshness.

DISPLAY YOUR WORK Place flowers in the rooms where you spend most of your time. For me that most commonly means on my fireplace mantle in my living room, or in the kitchen where we’re all spending a lot of time these days. Another good option is to add flowers where there’s a space in your home that needs some color. I love adding a small bud vase to my bathroom sink, because you can never have too much beauty in a bathroom.

TREAT YOURSELF Never wait for someone else to buy you flowers. That’s my biggest rule! We don’t need to ask permission or wait for an occasion to treat ourselves to some beauty. We’ve learned this year that life is short, so go ahead and buy yourself flowers. Or call in the professionals to put something really special together for you to enjoy, and support a small local business in the process.

Kristen MacNeil, RN Joli Medical Spa 435 Furnace Street, Marshfield MA 02050 | 781-248-5769 LeJoliVisage.com I am just like every woman who walks through my door. Whether she is a hardworking mom, college student, police officer, health care provider, businesswomen – we all have one thing in common: the desire to look and feel our best. Most noteworthy, as I meet each of these women,

the two biggest concerns I hear are, first, anxiety surrounding children, and second, money. It strikes me how these women who are working full-time or raising families, seek to earn or save the extra funds to spend on themselves – but this want, need, or desire is often guilt-producing. I firmly believe that not only should we not be burdened by a sense of guilt for wanting to improve ourselves, but that achieving our desire to look and feel our best should not have to cost a fortune.

Achieving our desire to look and feel our best doesn’t have to cost a fortune. – KRISTEN MACNEIL, RN

Therefore, it is my mission at Joli Medical Spa to support these individuals and help them attain their goals, by providing quality services and products, at a fair price.

At High Limb Cider’s West Plymouth taproom, a tattooed man in his 20s enthusiastically makes his way through a sampling of the brand’s offerings. “I’m not even a cider guy but, dude, that blew my mind,” he says. “Yeah, cider is, like, my favorite thing ever,” his friend responds in agreement. Overhearing this exchange, High Limb’s founder, Jeremy Quaglia, breaks into a broad, selfeffacing grin. “I swear I didn’t pay them to say that,” he says with a laugh. On this Friday afternoon, visitors are trickling in—some in search of their favorite four-pack to take home, others sidling up to one of several high-top tables with a front-row seat to the production and canning process. The taproom, which opened in late October, is an evolution of the business Quaglia started seven years ago as Homestead Cider, working out of the basement of his childhood home in Attleboro. “I fell in love with the art of fermentation; the process of turning nothing into something was really beautiful to me,” says Quaglia, who previously worked in the music industry. “The cider market was blossoming and I knew it was the direction for me.” Quaglia has since transformed his subterranean cidery into a brick-and-mortar business, rebranded as High Limb Cider, and perfected his recipes through lots of trial and error.

Today, Quaglia’s labor of love anchors a 25,000-square-foot facility that will soon be home to Providence-based GPub. Slated to open mid-2021, the restaurant will offer multiple dining, entertainment and event spaces under one roof, unified by a vibe of elevated comfort and fun. “The goal is a big, collaborative, immersive experience where you can spend the entire day,” says Quaglia. “Good food, cool music, innovative products and a completely seamless experience—you can start in the taproom and pay your tab in the speakeasy.” Tucked between a liquor store and an abandoned retail space, the cidery’s location—a former Planet Fitness— seems unlikely at first. Step over the threshold, however, and guests find themselves at the intersection of high concept and low key. Past the gastropub’s 25-tap marble bar and a massive wall that is papered in a bold, modern floral pattern, the taproom welcomes cider newbies and enthusiasts alike. Everything at High Limb exudes the kind of ease that is possible only through thoughtful choices. Enjoy a flight of four ciders for $10 or commit to a pint for $7. The staff is happy to guide you through the 10 or so ciders on tap, from traditional to adventurous and sweet to dry, but you won’t be bombarded with a master class on the details. Even so, while Quaglia and his team are reluctant to take themselves too seriously, they are eager to share their passion and knowledge with the curious. Although High Limb’s production facility resembles many craft breweries, the process of making cider is more analogous to winemaking. Apples, like grapes, are pressed into juice and fermented with the help of yeast and sugar. Fiddle with the variety and amounts of each, introduce other ingredients to switch up the flavor profile and sweetness, allow for the signature style of the maker, and the results can be memorable. “We’re using technique and tradition from beer and wine but refreshing it in our own way,” Quaglia explains. Apples, of course, are the starting point for High Limb’s constellation of 10 unfiltered ciders. They work with local growers who supply the varieties they want for upcoming releases and handle the juice pressing.

SPRING 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

High Limb’s core series includes flagship and seasonal recipes. There’s The OG—the original blend—as well as Honeypot, which is a Saison-style featuring New England honey, and Layers, which uses late season apples fermented with local cranberries from Bluewater Farm in Wareham. For those looking for something lower in calories, High Limb Light hits the mark without sacrificing flavor. The cidery’s more experimental offerings are found in the limitedrun Batch series. The third release, New England, honors the region’s tradition of fermenting with brown sugar and raisins, while the fourth, Brite Side, is a “happy accident” featuring lemon and ginger. The first release in High Limb’s Noble series is Smoked and at 10 percent ABV (alcohol by volume), it delivers. Presented in a 750ml format, this is the cidery’s nod to the German brewing tradition of Rauchbier. It features New England apples smoked in small batches over hand-harvested beechwood, and showcases more complex techniques. Keeping the High Limb line rooted in the long tradition of cidermaking but with room for creativity and experimentation is at the heart of Quaglia’s approach. “Right now, we’re working on a Chablis-style fermented on oyster shells,” he explains. “It’s about tipping your cap to place and time and terroir but not being super self-important about it. We still want to be fun.” Jarrod Carter, High Limb’s head of operations, designed the taproom’s small but highly customizable menu of house-made sandwiches, charcuterie boards, and accompaniments to complement the cider. His olive-infused hummus and cider-pickled blueberries stand out. “Consumers are very well informed and intelligent,” says Carter. “They want to know that care and thought is going into every single plate. That extends to the craft beverage market.” Quaglia concurs. “It’s not all about money. It’s about creating space where someone has a good time, tries something new, and they want to come back.”

DOUGHNUTS BY MARIA ALLEN PHOTO BY JACK FOLEY Longtime friends Janelle Brooks of Weymouth and Lynne Gray of Hanson are the founders of a boutique baking business known as The Doughnut Bar. Last summer, they started selling their doughnuts at the Weymouth Farmers Market and before long, their little dream had grown into a sweet business. Brooks and Gray still tend bar, and consider their bombshell doughnut flavor combinations to be the perfect pairing for a great cup of coffee--or a beer. You can find a rotating selection of The Doughnut Bar’s flavors at all four Coffee Break Cafe locations and they do a pop-up event every Sunday at Barrel House Z in Weymouth, with new flavors offered every week. MODERN SILHOUETTES Long before the invention of the camera, silhouette portraiture artists created images of people’s faces by cutting paper profiles. This minimalist style of art has grown more popular in recent years, thanks to advances in digital technology. Graphic designer Kathleen Cozzi uses a special cutting machine and a wide range of colorful cardstocks (in addition to the traditional black and white) to create custom silhouettes for her South Shore clients. The Scituate resident officially launched OMP Art Shop six months ago, following a corporate career in marketing and advertising. “I’ve always had an interest in graphic design and wanted to be able to focus on my artistic work,” says Cozzi, who credits her unique upbringing for instilling her with an appreciation for art. “I was born in Plymouth, but my family moved all over the world because of my dad’s work,” says Cozzi. “I think living in Asia and Europe gave me a broader view on art and what it can mean.” Each of Cozzi’s modern silhouettes is based on a digital photograph and she offers clients helpful tips for choosing images to achieve the best results. “They look really cute in a kid’s bedroom and are great gifts,” she says. “I love working with customers to make each piece special.” Cozzi sells her framed silhouettes, along with a range of other custom printed products, on her website.
