summer, it’s on the rooftop deck at The Parrot in Hull. Gazing out over the ocean with a cocktail in hand and palm fronds waving in the breeze, it’s easy to feel like you’re on vacation. We recently stopped by the popular restaurant with photographer Kjeld Mahoney to capture photos for the cover of our summer issue. The Parrot was just one of the lucky winners in the 2023 Best of the South Shore (BOSS) Awards. Flip to page 94 to find out which businesses were voted “Best of the South Shore” in more than 230 categories! Ever wonder how a business becomes a BOSS winner? The process begins in January, when we launch our annual reader survey on our website. We ask members of the South Shore community to nominate their favorite local businesses, from restaurants and hair salons to realtors and summer camps. The businesses that receive the most nominations in each category during the Nomination Round then moved on to the Final Voting Round. We had a record-breaking number of votes this year, which just goes to show how much people on the South Shore appreciate shopping, eating and supporting local businesses in their community. South Shore families have many cherished summer traditions. There are beach days at The Spit, trips to pick-your-own berry farms and visits to favorite ice cream shops. For more than a century people from across the region have been coming to The Marshfield Fair each summer. Writer Jen McInerney penned a story that delves into the rich history of the fair and reveals how the event has evolved over the years. She also wrote a feature for this issue on the South Shore’s newest photography gallery,

He is known for his spectacular family portraits, food and drink photography, and scenic images of Scituate and beyond. Kjeld captured photos for our story on the Marshfield Fair, Brian Sager Art Gallery, and our Best of the South Shore feature, including our cover shot of cocktails on the deck at The Parrot in Hull (winner for Best Outdoor Dining).

JEN MCINERNEY graduated from Boston University’s College of Communication in 1995 and has served as a writer and editor for local, national, and international publications ever since. SUCCESS STORY

At Charles David Salon & Spa, building a booming business is all about cultivating creative talent and community. By KELLIE SPEED Photography by LISA CZECH and JACK FOLEY

When David Honeycutt told his mother nearly 30 years ago that he was going to open a salon with his partner Charles “Buddy” Dudley, her response was, “but baby, you can’t even comb your hair!” Little did she know that the dynamic duo would go on to establish the awardwinning Charles David Salons & Spas, now known as a top destination for the latest and greatest hair and beauty services. Since launching their business in 1995, Honeycutt and Dudley have expanded to three locations (two in Plymouth and one in Hanover). The salons are sleek and modern, offering everything from expert haircuts and coloring to nail treatments, and skincare. “Hair coloring has always been our greatest strength and what we are best known for. However, I think what really sets us apart from other salons is our five-star service, education and community involvement,” says Honeycutt. “Buddy is an accomplished colorist who has traveled and taught colorists across the county for many years. My background is in the hotel industry, where I was a general manager prior to opening our first salon.” “David was able to bring hospitality to the beauty industry,” adds Dudley. “People can feel the warmth when they come in the door. It’s the experience that really keeps people coming back.” From the time Charles David Salon first opened its doors, the founders were committed to finding ways to make a difference in their local community. Just eight months after opening, the salon hosted a fashion show to raise money for underprivileged women to get breast exams. “Nobody knew us from Adam, but we called up Randy Price (former anchor at WCVB Channel 5) and asked him to emcee the

event. “Much to our surprise he said yes and the show was very successful,” says Dudley. “That was 28 years ago and it really fueled our philanthropic efforts, which have taken off from there.” These days, the salon’s charitable roster includes local and national beneficiaries, for organizations like Scituate Animal Shelter, South Shore Hospital, the Ellie Fund, Heidrea for Heroes, Crossroads, South Shore Conservatory, Norwell Women’s Club, and more. “For 25 years we asked every employee to give back one Sunday a year and host a Day of Beauty,” says Honeycutt. “On our highest day we raised $25,000. It’s a feel-good kind of day that we have instilled in our staff. Community giving has been a big part of our business since day one.” Ensuring their stylists stay on the cutting edge of hair coloring and styling trends has also remained at the forefront of their business plan. “For us, education has always been our strong suit,” says Honeycutt. “We are so education driven that we offer a two-day annual educational symposium that is in-house and mandatory, bringing top educators from around the country to Charles David.” This commitment to inspiring and elevating their employees has helped Charles David Salon & Spa to develop and retain a highly skilled and dedicated team. Five staff members have been working for the company ever since its founding, while another 20 boast a 25-year tenure, and 40 more have worked at the salon for at least 15 years. In addition to employing some of the top aestheticians, nail technicians, stylists and colorists in the region, the salon holds the title as the first ever inductee into the Redken Club 5th Avenue Hall of Fame after winning Redken’s Elite Salon of the Year award for a record six consecutive years. The salon is now ranked as one of L’Oreal’s Top 25 Salons in America. The salon’s accolades and expertise may “sound expensive” to some, but Honeycutt points out that there are a range of service options available to customers. “We have stylists with all levels of experience from Level 1 up to Buddy’s experience, at a Level 6,” he says. Honeycutt and Dudley have been together for 37 years. While the couple does not have children of their own, they consider their nearly 100 employees to be like family. “At some salons, fellow stylists see each other as competition,” says Dudley. “We have the most unbelievable team who care and help each other. I have never seen a professional family come together quite like we have.”

TEAM TOMA CELEBRATES 70 YEARS A family-run appliance store stands the test of time. By JAMES HANLEY Photography by JACK FOLEY From its humble beginnings as a small neighborhood television repair shop in Weymouth’s lower Jackson Square, George Washington Toma TV and Appliance has grown into a home appliance industry leader on the South Shore. A commitment to customer satisfaction, quality products and community connection has kept this family-run business going strong for 70 years. George Washington Toma TV and Appliance was founded in 1953 by the company’s namesake, George Washington Toma. Prior to this time, Toma had worked for a local company hanging antennas on roofs. When that business closed, he and a friend ventured out on their own to start a business called Weymouth TV. As the business grew and evolved, so did its name, eventually becoming George Washington Toma TV and Appliance in the 1970s. Now operating in both Weymouth and Brockton, George Washington Toma TV and Appliance has developed a loyal following with customers across multiple generations. The family’s patriarch retired in 1991, leaving the business in the capable hands of his children. His son, George Anthony Toma, is the company’s CEO and runs the Weymouth store. His daughter, Donna Toma Lawlor, runs the Brockton location, and his granddaughter Lindsay Toma handles the company’s delivery dispatch department.

George Washington Toma TV and Appliance specializes in the sale and service of a wide range of major household appliances, from washers, dryers, stoves, microwaves and dishwashers, to wine coolers, barbecue grills, televisions and sound systems. Some of the brands that they sell include Thermador, Monogram, Viking, Fisher Paykel and Dacor. The team at George Washington Toma helps buyers find just the right appliance for their needs and customers appreciate having someone to call if they have a question or need a repair. The high level of customer trust and loyalty is one of the factors that has helped the business succeed for so many years. “The people we meet are wonderful,” says CEO George A Toma, who has formed meaningful relationships with many of his longtime customers. “You see them on a regular basis and get to know their families and their pets too! We are now seeing third generations. It is very exciting and very special.” Giving back to the South Shore community is another thing that sets the company apart. George A Toma was recently appointed chairman of the board of directors for the Arc of the South Shore, a local nonprofit organization he has supported since 2012 that provides information, referrals, and community programs for individuals with disabilities. This year marks the company’s 70th year in business. The momentous milestone is meaningful for all of the members of the Toma family, but especially the family’s patriarch, George Washington Toma, who is now 94 years old. George A Toma is proud to be carrying on the family business. “[My father] is very happy and proud to see how far his company has come, how we have taken care of so many people, and that we are able to support and give back to the communities that have helped us grow and become the company we are today.”

THE NEW ENGLAND PHOTOG Two South Shore business owners have teamed up to launch a custom photo editing tool.

By MARIA ALLEN Do you love taking photos on your phone? Ever wonder how social media influencers make their Instagram feed polished and cohesive? While it’s possible that these individuals are taking the time to painstakingly edit each image before posting–adjusting the exposure, saturation and more–there’s a good chance they’re using a shortcut known as a preset. Two South Shore women recently teamed up to launch The New England Photog, a tool and resource for creatives and entrepreneurs that delivers presets designed to give images an iconic and classic New England vibe. The New England Photog is the brainchild of South Shore photographer Kate Rogan and Rachael Meyers, founder of the Collective Co. in Scituate. Having both worked with many local startup brands, they knew that there was increasing demand for high-quality photography with an aesthetically pleasing look. Realizing that there was a gap in the preset market, they decided to put their professional backgrounds in photography, marketing and design to use in order to address the needs of the clients they serve. “The way you tell your story online matters,” says Rogan, who designed the presets (used with the Lightroom for mobile app) to bring out the depth and details of photographs, creating a dreamy editorial feel. Whether you’re capturing images of people or products, the presets allow the user to quickly give their photos a light and airy look, with perfectly saturated colors. Beyond the presets, New England Photog will soon be offering an array of resources to educate users on simple photography tips and tricks.

AARON NORFOLK: AUDIO-VISIO Duxbury’s Art Complex Museum presents Aaron Norfolk: Audio-Visio. The Boston-based painter’s large, color-rich paintings begin with what he hears, not with what he sees. He says, “Sight and sound run parallel in our perception, and these works do not intend to confound the two. Rather, the interest is for the viewer to switch back and forth across subjectivity, allowing sound its visual memory. As a word becomes a sound’s visual placeholder, so these paintings become their portrait.” Norfolk began painting as a teenager and earned a BFA from the College of William and Mary before coming to Boston University for his MFA where he has been a School of Visual Arts Lecturer and Painting Fellow. 189 Alden St., Duxbury, 781-934-6634, artcomplex.org

That painter then chose another painter, etc. Hence the exhibition name, “Tag.” The artists picked friends, studio mates, former classmates, and other artists whose work they admired. Like a game of tag, there were not many rules, other than being based in New England, and even that rule was bent. The result is an organically grown exhibition with a wide-ranging view. Artists in the exhibition include Angela Godoy, Kevin Kearns, Chil Mott, Richard Neal, Carol O’Malia, Tula Telfair, Peter Waite, and Gina Volpe. 189 Alden St., Duxbury, 781-934-6634, artcomplex.org

ART COMPLEX MUSEUM PRESENTS: UNSETTLED PIECES

Three artists have chosen mosaic as the common language to explore issues affecting the planet, each in her own style. Debora Aldo uses her signature material—pebbles—along with up-cycled contemporary materials, to infuse her lines with meaning. Nikki Sullivan and Anabella Wewer both use classical andamento to form their lines, but Nikki often uses a large found object as her focal point, while Anabella breaks down uncommon materials into regularly sized tesserae. Each artist has embraced one or more topics within our changing world, and brought to it the unusual and uncommon set of skills that it takes to create a mosaic. 189 Alden St., Duxbury, 781-934-6634, artcomplex.org www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

An annual summertime tradition delivers family entertainment, nostalgia and new fun features.

The scope of the Marshfield Fair has grown exponentially since the mid-1860s, when a fledgling group of local farmers hosted a gathering on the Town Common to exhibit agricultural and horticultural products—which attracted 9,000 visitors. MARSH FI ELD FAI R

Running the Fair is a Family Affair LaForest’s family moved from Plymouth to Marshfield in the 1950s, when he was 2 years old. He remembers the hometown of his youth as a “country town,” with a population of about 1,000 citizens. His father, Leonard “John” LaForest, owned the LaForest Village Shoppe next to the Congregational Church and often socialized with other local business owners, including Russell Chandler, who owned a radio shop and was a member (and later president) of the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society. The elder LaForest signed on to help with the operation of the Marshfield Fair, as a member of the board of directors’ management committee—and stayed on for about 50 years. “The fair was floundering a bit back then, and he helped get it back on track,” the younger LaForest recalls. During his high school years, Lenny LaForest helped his father, who ran the four beer concession stands at the fair. He spent most of the fair running from one end of the grandstand to another, out to the infield, and back to the beer stand next to Aggie Hall, keeping provisions well stocked for the racetrack crowd. By the 1980s, the “older generation” wanted to welcome the “younger generation” into leadership positions, and he accepted an appointment to the board of directors. LaForest, a retired Marshfield Police Sergeant and Harbormaster, has served as president of the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society for 33 years. “We’ve had some difficult years, but we’ve managed to survive it,” he says. “The fair is more financially stable than it’s ever been in its existence.” Continuing the legacy of involvement in this historic annual

tradition, a third generation of the family has entered the fair’s fold. In 2021, LaForest’s nephew, Noel Powers, followed in his uncle’s and grandfather’s footsteps and joined the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society Board of Directors. Like his uncle, Powers grew up with the Marshfield Fair, and started helping with the annual event’s preparation during his high school summers, two decades ago, painting buildings and cutting grass. “This is a family event, so it means a lot to work together with family to put it on,” says Powers. He’s one of many second- and thirdgeneration contributors carrying on the custom of family involvement with the Marshfield Fair, from the 4-H exhibitors to the food vendors. “There are numerous multigenerational groups working to help pull the fair together, continuing the tradition established by their ancestors,” says Powers. “We like to keep those local ties.”

Balancing Act: Preserving the Past While Embracing the Future The Marshfield Fair has withstood the tests of timet, navigating more than a century-and-a-half of technological progress, not to mention wars, economic recessions and the Covid-19 pandemic. One notable event in the fair’s history was the elimination of horse racing on the fairgrounds’ half-mile track. Introduced in the early 1900s, thoroughbred and sulky (standardbred horses pulling a two-wheeled cart) racing drew enthusiastic crowds from throughout the region for nearly a century. “People are always asking me, ‘When is the fair going to bring horse racing back?’,” says LaForest. “We were more or less forced to give it up, and it’s not a feasible entity today.” In 1991, the state racing commission did not renew the Marshfield Fair’s usual late-August race dates, granting them instead to a newly opened track in Foxboro and pushing Marshfield’s meet dates back to September. Rather than reschedule the fair to accommodate this change, the board of directors revamped the roster of racetrack spectacles—including tractor-pulls and the fan-favorite Demolition Derby—and expanded attractions around the grandstand area. In addition, the board of directors continues to focus on modernization, a delicate balancing act between staying rooted in tradition while ensuring the growth of the fair. “We want to keep the things that people come back for year after year, while also staying relevant to the times and bringing new excitement to the fair,” says Powers.

MARSHFIELD FAIR TIMELINE 1867: The Inaugural Marshfield Fair The Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society staged the firstever Marshfield Fair, establishing what has become an annual favorite event on the South Shore for more than 150 years. The group purchased the property on South River Street that is now the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

To that end, Powers and the board have developed partnerships that have led to the introduction of new vendors and attractions; gourmet food trucks that elevate the dining experience beyond fried food; new entertainment acts, including the first-ever country music weekend during the first weekend of the fair last year; and a new partnership with Castle Island Brewery to bring its IPA to the fair. Also new this year: in addition to Marshfield Residents Day (discounted), Senior Citizens Day (free), 4-H Agricultural Awareness Day (free), and Children’s Day (free under 12), the fair is designating a Veterans Day and offering free admission to individuals who qualify. Along with this new wave of innovations, the fair’s familiar favorites endure, from the annual quilting display, to the birds of prey, face painting, pony rides, chainsaw sculptor, fried dough and cotton candy. “It’s amazing to watch how people react to different parts of the fair,” says LaForest. “Old, young and in-between all having a good time, and the kids are shrieking with delight because they’re having so much fun. That’s my favorite thing about the fair.”

88

1870s: Establishing the Foundation Construction began on an exhibition hall, now called Agricultural Hall, to root the Marshfield Agriculture and Horticultural Society firmly in the community. The Hall, which once hosted Marshfield Town Meetings, continues to serve as the fair’s centerpiece for exhibiting arts, crafts and produce. 1905-1910: Addition of Horse Racing Serving as the Society’s president, Scituate lumber magnate Thomas Lawson had an interest in thoroughbred and sulky—standardbred horses pulling a two-wheeled cart—racing. He spearheaded the construction of additional barns and sheds throughout the fairgrounds as well a grandstand and half-mile racetrack for horse racing, which became a main attraction of the fair for nearly a century. 1912-1930: Off to the Races! In addition to horse racing, the track featured races for motorcycles— including the 1912 championship Merze motorcycle, manufactured in Brockton— and Model A Fords by local drivers. Additionally, Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge also made visits to the fair

SUMMER 2023 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

1991: The Finish Line for Horse Racing Horse Racing at the fair came to an abrupt halt when the state racing commission awarded Marshfield’s meet dates to a newly opened track in Foxboro. Marshfield’s dates were moved back two weeks, which did not coincide with the fair’s tradition of late-August family fun.

1930s-1940s: Death-Defying Feats In addition to racing, the Marshfield Fair drew crowds with exciting live

entertainment, including high-wire acts, the Barrel of Death motorcycle stunt spectacle, stage shows, band concerts and fireworks. 1946: Welcoming Women Exhibitors For the first eight decades of the Marshfield Fair’s existence, men were the main exhibitors. In 1946, the fair welcomed the Women’s Exchange, enabling women to display and sell their crafts, and led to cooking and baking contests. 1950-1990: Cultivating Steady Growth Over the next 40 years, the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society expanded the fair’s attractions and its appeal with 4-H contests, agricultural and horticultural exhibits, arts and crafts displays, midway rides and games of chance, musical entertainment, horse racing and car thrill shows on the track.

2000: Expansion of Off-Season Events To help offset year-round maintenance expenses of the Marshfield Fairgrounds, the Society opted to open its venue during the off-season to outside organizations, including Spindles Auto Club, an annual flea market, several music festivals, such as Levitate, and a year-round farmers market. 2020: Marshfield Fair Canceled For only the second time in its long history, the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society had to cancel the annual Marshfield Fair due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The only other time the fair had been canceled was during World War II.

Present Day: Continuing the Tradition While the fair has expanded and diversified to reflect modern-day preferences, this annual tradition continues to honor the past with its ongoing commitment to the founding farmers’agricultural and horticultural roots.

Built in 1928, the Paragon Carousel has been operating by the shore of Nantasket Beach for 95 years. Once part of the amusement mecca known as Paragon Park, it is one of the last remaining grand carousels in the United States. The ride is filled to the rafters with nostalgia and features 66 intricately carved wooden horses and two rare Roman Chariots, which have all been carefully restored to their former glory by restoration curator James Hardison. Taking a spin on this antique carousel has become a summertime tradition for many families. The Carousel is a non-profit and is funded through grants as well as proceeds from the Carousel Creamery, located inside the Clock Tower building next door. Order a summer snack or ice cream cone as you leave and help keep the ride going for future generations.

Calm, clear water and miles of fine sand make Nantasket Beach ideal for walkers, sunbathers, and families with young children. The best time to visit is at low tide, when there’s plenty of space to park beach chairs and build sandcastles. Located adjacent to Nantasket Avenue, the beach is within walking distance of great restaurants and family-friendly attractions. Young kids will enjoy taking a ride on the historic Paragon Carousel, while older kids will want to visit the arcade and mini golf at Paragon Boardwalk (parents can kick back at the onsite beer garden). Nantasket Beach is also a favorite for beginner surfers. Northeast Surfing has a mobile surf shop right on the beach where you can rent a board or sign up for lessons and surfing camps for kids.

Head chef and partner at Osteria Vivo Restaurant & Bar in Pembroke, Douglas Rodrigues puts a creative twist on classic Italian cuisine. Rodrigues grew up in Scituate and over the course of his career he has worked in kitchens across the South Shore and Boston. His experience at restaurants like Clio, Liquid Art House and Aquitaine influenced his modern and technical approach to crafting dishes. When Rodrigues got the chance to move “home” and partner with restaurateurs Jimmy Burke and Joanie Wilson, he jumped at the opportunity. At Osteria Vivo, customers rave over the lobster and oxtail bolognese, grilled piedmontese sirloin steak, and pasta al limone with dayboat scallops. The secret, says Rodrigues, is to always use the freshest seasonal ingredients.

assing through the heart of Cohasset Village, it’s impossible to miss the three large-scale photographs that seem to float in the storefront windows at Sager Fine Art. Vivid blue hues of the sea and sky invite pedestrians to pause and reflect while enticing them to enter the sunlit showroom, where more nautical images are displayed. “This is the size the camera is meant to capture,” says photographer Brian Sager, whose photographs are framed or printed directly onto aluminum backing and can measure up to 5 feet across. “You can really see the detail clearly. So much is lost when viewing images on a phone or computer screen.” Situated on South Main Street, the gallery allows customers to view the art as it would appear in their own home or office. Sager’s wife, Carey, gestures to a sweeping seascape encompassing water, horizon and clouds, titled “Montauk and the Race.” She points to a ripple among the waves and follows the movement with her finger to reveal its source–a flying fish. “This level of detail is why we put an emphasis on printing work at scale,” Carey explains. The ability for customers to get up close and personal with the photographs was one of the driving factors that inspired the couple to open Sager Fine Art in Cohasset one year ago. The couple met and lived together on Nantucket for five years before deciding to move to the South Shore. After exploring several coastal New England towns, they found themselves drawn to Cohasset’s New England charm, history and proximity to the ocean. “We love the feel of Cohasset Village,” says Carey. “It reminds us of Nantucket.”

One day, while enjoying coffee at Seabird Coffee & Co, the Sagers happened to notice that the retail space next door was available. “We couldn’t believe this place was just sitting here, empty,” Carey recalls. Built into the rocky hillside, the historic building features south-facing front windows, a pair of stone fireplaces, and centuries-old uneven floors, ceilings and windows that required the Sagers to come up with some creative solutions to ensure photographs hung levelly.

Water, Water Everywhere Over the past decade, Brian Sager has developed a body of work that showcases a range of nautical scenes, from picturesque coastlines to vibrant offshore compositions. Many of his images feature sailboats, photographed in the waters off Nantucket and in the Caribbean. “Nearly all of my photographs have water in them,” Brian says with

a laugh. Growing up in Marion, he was an avid sailor and water polo player. In recent years, he’s had the good fortune to join the crew aboard classic wooden sailboats and yachts, ferrying the vessels from their summertime ports in New England to safer harbors in the Caribbean for the winter. During these seven-to-10-day excursions, he’s been able to capture many of the unique and unparalleled offshore images in his portfolio. “I love the whole experience, from the adventure aspect to the beauty of being out on the open sea when it’s perfectly calm,” says Brian. “It feels like a different world.” In all, Brian Sager has traveled 10,000 miles aboard sailboats bound for the Caribbean and has needed rescuing by the Coast Guard only once. In November 2013, he was sailing aboard a 65-foot sailboat when rough conditions (30-foot waves and 40-mile-perhour winds) caused the rudder to break off. He and the crew drifted for about 18 hours, until the Coast Guard was able to reach them. In addition to his fine art photography, Brian works as a commercial wedding photographer during peak season and is also a photographer for “N Magazine.” In 2020, he received the Artist Association of Nantucket’s (AAN) Photography Award and his work has also been exhibited at AAN and the Thomas Macy Gallery on Nantucket. More recently, he had photographs commissioned by the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and the Nantucket Community Music Center.

New Initiatives on the Horizon The past year has been an exceptional and exciting one for the Sagers, both professionally and personally. In addition to moving and opening their own business, the young couple also welcomed their first child. With their business continuing to grow and gain momentum, the Sagers recently announced two new summer initiatives: a South Shore-focused photography series and a collaboration with local artists. Inspired by client requests and his love for being out on the water, Brian has been preparing a “Cohasset by Kayak,” photo series. “Exploring by kayak is so quiet and you’re not disturbing the scene,” he says. “A kayak provides an intimate way to interact with the region’s ocean, harbors, and tidal estuaries at different tidal stages.” Original limited-edition images captured from Minot to Cohasset Harbor will be available in the showroom and in the online gallery, beginning this summer. The Sagers are also launching The Artist Collective, an artist-in-residence collaboration showcasing select artists from the South Shore. The first person to be featured is oil painter Nikki Storer, who is known for her depictions of coastal seascapes and beach scenes in Cohasset and neighboring communities. “We are thoughtfully partnering with artists whose work and vision align with ours,” says Brian. “We think Nikki will be a great fit.”

126

With the arrival of summer, the Sagers are excited to welcome more new visitors to the gallery and Sager will be offering a variety of custom photo sizes and finishes (glossy or matte, printed on paper or metal) to suit buyer preferences. “We want people to be ecstatic with their purchase and enjoy the image for a long time to come.”

Artist-in-Residence: Nikki Storer Photos by Brian Doherty

Cohasset-based oil painter Nikki Storer is the inaugural artist-in-residence at Sager Fine Art as part of the gallery’s new Artist Collective. An artist since childhood, Storer’s art career took off in earnest about five years ago, when she resumed taking art classes. In 2020, she painted her first commissioned piece and she now has commissions all over the country as well as featured collections for brands like Serena & Lily and Cailini Coastal. Storer’s artwork draws from the natural beauty of coastal landscapes, particularly the ocean. During frequent walks on the beach, she has marveled at the waves approaching the shore: the curl of the water as a wave crests, the spray of the seafoam as the waves crash toward the sand. “I’m known for my wave paintings. People tell me they’re transportive,” says Storer. “I’m also fascinated by how ever-changing the water and sky are in different light and at different times of the day.” As the artist-in-residence, Storer will have an opportunity to showcase her luminous original pieces of artwork in the gallery alongside photographer Brian Sager’s works, meet with prospective clients, and take part in special events involving the local community. “I’m really looking forward to working with Brian and Carey in the beautiful space they’ve designed,” says Storer. “The artist community here is small, and this type of work can be isolating, so it will be nice to connect with and bounce ideas off of them.” For more information, visit nikkistorerart.com. www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

Architect Patrick Ahearn’s new book tells the story of a oncegrand seaside resort and its transformation into an elegant home overlooking Duxbury Bay.

SUMMER 2023 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

f not for a fortuitous change in the wind, a jewel of the South Shore might have been lost forever. In 1908, fire erupted at the Myles Standish Hotel in Duxbury, destroying a number of outlying buildings. As the blaze threatened to consume the elegant seaside resort, the air of fortune shifted and the rambling main building was saved from devastation. Which is a good thing. Otherwise, Boston architect Patrick Ahearn would not have been able to reimagine this stately property as one of the premier private residences overlooking Duxbury Bay. After new owners purchased the property in 2016, Ahearn began an extensive redesign of the north wing of the once-grand hotel with a keen eye toward preserving its classic charm while introducing modern influences to create a home for today. The award-winning architect has chronicled that major undertaking in a new book, “History Reinterpreted: The Myles Standish Hotel.” The narrative relates how he reimagined the historic structure as a beautiful homestead perfectly suited for a contemporary lifestyle. “What if this was still the Myles Standish Hotel?” Ahearn said in an interview. “Half of it was removed at one point. So with some poetic license, my idea was to reimagine it as it would have looked today. That was my mission: to make sure the script and narrative matched reality. The spirit of the project was what the hotel would have looked like over time.” Built in 1871 on land once owned by Pilgrim Myles Standish, the stately resort was originally known as the Standish House. The name was later changed and the refined retreat became the “must visit” destination on the South Shore for many of the East Coast’s wealthy elite. In addition to the massive hotel, the property included a spectacular vista of Duxbury Bay, spring well with bottling operation, 400-foot pier for boating, golf course, bathhouses and sailing regattas throughout the summer. The resort reopened following the 1908 fire but then closed for good four years later. It fell into disrepair until it was acquired by two brothers who “split up” the property. The resort’s south wing was moved to another location while the north wing remained on site and was used as a residence. Later additions changed the scope and aesthetics of the original building.

At first, the home’s owners lived in a home next to the site. But they came to realize the potential for the beautiful former hotel and asked Ahearn to come up with ideas as to how it could be restored. “They fell in love with the design, sold their house and moved into it,” says Ahearn. “Our client wanted to preserve it in order to resell it at first but couldn’t resist the charm of this property. It was a nice story.” Ahearn began by researching the grand old hotel and soon envisioned how its classic elegance could be reimagined as a stately home. He added a new carriage house and boat house, as well as a large wrap-around porch, to complete his reinterpreted design. The owners liked his ideas. So did the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. The prestigious organization recognized Ahearn’s redesign with the 2021 Bulfinch Award for Residential (Restoration, Renovation or Addition). While working on the project, Ahearn decided to document the process for a book. This is his second; his first, “Timeless: Classical American Architecture for Contemporary Living,” was released in 2018. “History Reinterpreted: The Myles Standish Hotel” is lavishly illustrated with photos of the original hotel, new images of the reinvented property and Ahearn’s original hand drawings of how the restoration process could take place. The 172-page hardcover book sells for $45 and is available for order through Amazon and on the architect’s website. Ahearn is also planning a South Shore book tour to discuss the project.

“Bluefish Morning” Oil painting by Bettina Lesieur With its gently winding waters and perfect “gumdrop” tree on the horizon, the iconic Bluefish River is one of the spots in Duxbury that painter Bettina Lesieur loves to visit. Her painting, “Bluefish Morning,” captures the shimmer of morning light and the reflections on the calm water. “The appearance of the scene changes depending on the time of day, weather and season,” says Lesieur. “It is an interesting study as an artist to attempt to capture the transience of the light.” In addition to her paintings of the South Shore, she enjoys traveling and painting in the European countryside. Often commissioned to paint for private collections, Lesieur is fascinated with color, form, texture and the randomness nature possesses. Lesieur also teaches art to children. Each summer she holds small-group art classes at her studio for children and teens. Students begin by choosing the subject matter they would like to focus on and then select an appropriate artistic medium, from acrylic paint to colored pencil or pastel. Lesieur finds great satisfaction in being able to create a supportive environment where the creative expression of her students is able to flourish. Lesieur will be holding her annual open house at her art studio on Labor Day weekend (Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.). For more information, visit bettinalesieur.com.
