LAURA DESISTO is a Cohasset resident who got her start writing copy for Boston ad agencies. She has penned stories for numerous lifestyle magazines, writing about everything from local celebrities to education. She is also the author of a memoir, “Resurfacing: Sisterhood, Sharks and Storms.” For this issue, DeSisto wrote a story about the South Shore roots of the Boston greenery business, Cityscapes. he also profiled a trio of women who are making a positive impact on women’s health and penned a feature about a fancy Hingham chicken coop.

SARAH HINCHEY is a portrait photographer with a studio in downtown Hingham with a unique talent for putting people at ease in front of the camera. Her mission is to build self-love and confidence in every person she photographs, reflecting back to them the beauty that everyone else sees. For this issue, Hinchey captured stunning portraits of local business women for our Empowering Women section. She also captured photos of a luxurious chicken coop and greenhouse.

It’s been an exciting year for Anna Daley Young, a South Shore singer-songwriter with an electric smile and a smooth voice that combines elements of country, folk and pop. In May, the Weymouth native released her debut album, “Go My Own Way,” and in August she had the chance to perform for a crowd of thousands at the Levitate Music Festival. We chatted with Anna to learn more about her musical journey.

Has music always been a passion for you? deeply private thoughts and feelings. Born and raised in Weymouth, Massachusetts, I grew up with unlimited access to inspiration from my dad — a fellow musician, who taught me to play guitar when I was 12 years old. instruments were the toys that filled my childhood. t was magical to have the privilege of growing up in such a creatively inclined household where my interest in music was piqued from an early age — and only continued to grow as I did.

What led you to become a singer-songwriter? ike anything, the involvement of music in my life ebbed and flowed

and used to sing with my dad’s band, but music was not my sole focus until about 18-19 years old. After graduating from high school, I decided to pursue a career as a hairstylist. Working at a hair salon gave me the opportunity to pursue a creative career. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that I started to see music as more than ust a hobby. t was then, in

, that finally made the spontaneous switch to become a full

time musician — and I couldn’t be more thankful that I did.

I imagine the pandemic gave you time to focus more on songwriting? The silence of quarantine and the distance away from the world gave me the time to hone my newfound craft — songwriting. In the isolation and unending alone time, I found myself reaching for my guitar and notebook to express my thoughts. In all of those “lost months” spent inside, I found myself. I discovered that I was an artist, a singer-songwriter, a creator — titles I never saw myself having the privilege to possess. Exiting the pandemic, I was ready and eager to share my songs with the world. At my core, music has always been who am. But, when the whole world was isolated amid a pandemic, that was the first time found myself not only turning to music — but creating music — to help understand the world around me.

How does your debut album “ o

y Own Way ” re ect this ourney?

It’s interesting to think about the album’s timeline because songwriting and the act of creating is never a linear process. Each song starts with a feeling or a thought that I can’t seem to shake, and it soon develops into a story. From thinking about writing an album and creating the overarching theme of “Go My Own Way,” to writing the music and lyrics to each of the 10 songs, to the polished version ready to be recorded in the studio took almost a year. It’s really interesting to think about who I was at the start of this album to who I am now because I feel like creating and crafting “Go My Own Way,” I was also creating and pursuing a future that I had only dreamed about. As the album grew, I grew as a singer-songwriter — and also as a person.

Is there a theme to the album? “Go My Own Way” was written to capture that feeling of independence and encourage individuality. It’s funny, I think I wrote “Go My Own Way” because it was a message that I really wanted to hear, and, in a way, it was like this album was my way of encouraging myself to chase my dreams. This album is a love letter to myself, and all those who have found themselves on the path less traveled — take risks, follow your dreams, and go your own way. This album is the manifestation of what’s to come as I continue to follow this incredible path. he album is filled with different characters, and

on the

surface — it seems to consist of other people’s stories. But all of these characters live within me, and — in my opinion — they live within each one of us. Each one of these songs is meant to illustrate universal human experiences.

How do you find inspiration for your songwriting? The greatest inspiration for songwriting and — more broadly, all of my creative endeavors — is other people’s stories and experiences. Trying to understand those around me will constantly challenge me and serve as a neverending source of inspiration. Ever since I can remember, I have seen and interpreted the

would look around at a restaurant, an airport, at other cars on the highway and create these little anecdotes about people — transforming them from strangers to characters, each with their own unique story. Before I was lucky enough to call it my career, I created little poems — which now take the form of songs — to understand the world around me. These poems would come to me as little phrases, or I’d start singing a line or two — and these lines would become a song. Benjamin Percy is quoted expressing a similar sentiment: “Writing is an act of empathy. You are occupying and understanding a point of view that might be alien to your own — and work is often the keyhole through which you peer.”

One of the album tracks is called “Fall.” What is the message of this song? he chords my dad first taught me on the acoustic guitar , , ,

song s message illustrates another first one s first love. Love, as many of us know, is complicated and confusing and magnificent and miserable. t s all-consuming.

I set out to write this song, I wanted to illustrate the arc of young love and the transformative nature of that relationship. The song starts with “I like this melody, I like this tune / I like the idea of me and you” and ends with the

declaration, “I won’t ever fall for you again.” It was a song rooted in the idea that love isn’t always what you hope it to be, and, oftentimes, the reality of love is far messier than the idea that exists in our heads.

Is there a certain track that you are particularly proud of on this album? The song that comes to mind is Mt. Maiden Street because it was actually the last song I wrote for the album. In a way, I can already see the evolution of my songwriting from the first few chords wrote to pair with some old poems I had written, to this song, which happened so organically. Sometimes a song comes to you, and that’s what happened with Mt. Maiden Street. I was driving down the street, and the entire chorus ust came to me instantly. hat night, finished writing and recorded a rough first version that sent to my producer the moment finished it. n a way, feel like that song was the missing piece to the album, and once finished it, knew

You recently performed at the Levitate Festival. What did it feel like to be up on that stage? Levitate was a dream. Everything about the experience was magical, from the initial call to play the show to seeing the poster with my name on it alongside big-name artists to playing the festival — it truly was a dream come true. But think the greatest feeling of all was the overwhelming support I felt from my family and friends, fans, and complete strangers. Having people choose to spend their time listening to me perform, looking out in the crowd to see my people clad in my ADY-merch, and the immensity of love and connection through music — it truly was such a special day and such a proud accomplishment of mine.

Where can people catch your performances locally, on the South Shore? The beauty of this career is getting to perform at different venues and connect with people in all walks of life. think that s truly one of the biggest blessings of being a musician is the diversity of experience. Giant

Adirondacks

Here in New England, Adirondack chairs have become synonymous with relaxation and a laidback lifestyle. Plymouth Carpenter Cory Caranci has carved out a unique niche in the outdoor furniture market by handcrafting supersized Adirondack chairs for local businesses. The owner of Caranci Construction decided to try his hand at building larger-than-life Adirondack chairs two years ago, after seeing a similar product on display at Hingham’s Derby Street Shops. Fast forward to today and

aranci now has a flourishing

side business. The Giant Adirondack Chairs Instagram feed features dozens of photographs of custom chair projects built by Caranci for local businesses. With most of his chairs measuring 10 feet tall and 4.5 feet wide, these supersized seats make a big impression on passersby and provide a fun photo op. In fact, aranci now has social media followers who find enjoyment traveling the South Shore and Cape Cod, seeking out Giant Adirondack Chairs so they can lounge and snap photos.

In Plymouth, for example, one monumental blue Adirondack chair graces Shirley Square, nestled snugly at the intersection of Main and North Street. There’s also a vibrant yellow chair that can be spotted at the Village Landing Marketplace, and another blue chair emblazoned with a hand painted logo for Cafe Nicole, which offers fantastic views of Plymouth Harbor. Each chair weighs approximately 500 pounds and is built on site using wide planks of wood. Caranci can customize each chair with different paint colors and business logos. His handiwork is now showcased locally outside South Shore businesses like The Well in Norwell and Dairy Twist in Pembroke. Earlier this summer he traveled all the way to Provincetown to construct a vibrant rainbow chair for the Surfside Hotel & Suites in Provincetown. “It’s very different from building a deck in someone’s backyard, which few people get to see,” says Caranci. “It’s rewarding seeing people’s faces when they realize how big the chairs really are.” He’s also happy that Giant Adirondack Chairs are bringing a little bit of joy to the South Shore community.

Photographer Gregg Shupe shares simple tips for capturing dynamic images of homes in the fall season. By MARIA ALLEN Photography by GREGG SHUPE A professional photographer for more than 40 years, Gregg Shupe, owner of Shupe Studios, specializes in high-tech product photography as well as architectural and landscape photography. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Professional Photography, Shupe often travels all across the South Shore and New England for his work. Whether photographing apartment buildings and corporate offices or restaurants, hospitals, or residential homes, his aim is always to capture spaces in a way that captivates the interest of the viewer. Shupe skillfully plans out his shoots to represent homes in the best light possible. One of my benefits is a free pre-shoot walk-through, which allows me to understand the scope and timing of the project and how the sun affects it,” says Shupe. “I often will add a little warmth in post-production as a warm image projects homeyness and good living.” The way he approaches a photography assignment also changes depending on the season. His advice to anyone looking to photograph a property in the fall is to start early. “Fall can be a magical time for architectural photography and landscapes,” says Shupe. “Less moisture in the air means cleaner, crisper shots and more vibrant color. However, you are dealing with a short window and mother nature can be fickle. One of the things Shupe loves most about his job is that every day is different. “That constant change and the very cool locations you end up getting to see, makes it all worthwhile.”

Helpful Tips for Landscape and Architecture Photography from Gregg Shupe LANDSCAPES Once September arrives, plants have had a full growing season behind them and have recovered from summer dryness. Lawns are greener, plants look healthier, and the landscape is more lush. In many respects fall is the best time of year for landscape photography. If your intent is to make the best impression–think fall.

EXTERIORS OF BUILDINGS Building construction tends to finish in the fall so you will be shooting completed pro ects while everything is new and fresh, with easy access to the premises. t also means that this year s pro ects can be photographed and utilized for marketing purposes during winter and spring. Too many times I’ve seen people wait for spring only to be done in by weather and lose months of promotion. f your building is still under construction, fall exterior shots allow you to make it appear that the pro ect is farther along and provides the opportunity to merchandise it in advance. Good examples are apartment buildings or condo complexes where you will be pre-selling prior to pro ect completion. hotos go a long way toward helping people visuali e your pro ect, making for an easier sell.

FALL FOLIAGE – OR NOT Landscape photography in the fall doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to include fall foliage. The great thing about fall is that you can get the best of both worlds–a nice summer feel or a colorful fall foliage scene. Your subject matter and the purpose of the photo will be the guiding factors. For example, you may want your building to say summer, while a co y outdoor fireplace

might think that when stick season arrives all is lost, but we can often pull a rabbit out of a hat. Shot at the right time of day with the right lighting, trees are less visible, with the added bonus of showing off the architecture. Another option in stick season is shooting at dusk, i.e. magic hour, where the lack of foliage goes unnoticed and can make for a terrific shot - with your building architecture in full view.

The 12 Gala On June 21, NVNA and Hospice held its annual fundraiser, The 12, at the Pat Roche Hospice Home atop Turkey Hill. Named for the 12 private resident rooms at the hospice home, the charitable event raised more than $500,000 to support patients and families seeking end-of-life care. South Shore Arts Festival Preview Gala On June 10, South Shore Art Center kicked off its Arts Festival with a Festival Preview Gala featuring the collective known as TRIIIBE. This experiential event featured works by National Geographic photographer Cary Wolinsky of Norwell and artists Alicia, Kelly, and Sara Casilio (identical triplets). During their intensive, six-year collaboration, TRIIIBE challenged global ideas on identity and stereotypes, using iconography to make pointed social and political commentary. Wolinsky and the Casilio sisters spoke about how their creative journeys merged, the work they produced, and the themes and issues they tackled. Sadly, Wolinsky passed away unexpectedly on June 16. Through TRIIIBE, their partnership produced artful photographs that provoke conversations about gender, equality and identity. Photos by Keith Conforti

Scott, an acclaimed Baltimore artist who for over three decades has elevated the possibilities of beadwork as a relevant contemporary art form. Scott uses off-loom hand-threaded beads and blown glass to create arresting jewelry, figurative sculptures, and wall hangings informed by her African American ancestry, the craft traditions of her family (including her quilter mother Elizabeth T. “THE HISTORY OF THE BAKER CHOCOLATE COMPANY” AT JAMES LIBRARY On October 5 at 7 p.m., local historian Anthony Sammarco details the delicious saga of Massachusetts’s Baker Chocolate Company at the James Library in Norwell. In 1765, Dr. James Baker of Dorchester stumbled upon Irishman John Hannon crying on the banks of the Neponset River. Hannon, though penniless, possessed the rare skills required to create chocolate, a delicacy exclusive to Europe, and Baker, with pockets bursting, wished to make a name for himself. Using a mill powered by the same river upon which they met, the duo built America’s oldest manufacturer of this treat. Both bitter and sweet, Sammarco’s tale of “The History of the Baker Chocolate Company” encompasses Hannon’s mysterious disappearance and the famed La Belle Chocolatière advertising campaign to cacao bean smuggling sparked by Revolutionary War blockades. 24 West St., Norwell, jameslibrary.org

BOOGIE AT THE BOG Step into your waders and get ready for Boogie at the Bog, a new annual event to benefit and celebrate the launch of Frogfoot Farm Neighbors feeding Neighbors, a farm-to-food relief partnership with A.D. Makepeace Company (ADM) to support our neighbors in need and vision for food system change goals. The evening will include a cocktail hour in a bog of floating berries, delicious food from local food businesses, live music, and dancing amid century-old cranberry bogs. Frogfoot Farm will grow produce for food pantries that struggle to source healthy, fresh food. In addition, the farm will be a training site for a regional gleaning program. Every year, thousands of pounds of food goes to waste in the fields because farmers either do not have the labor to harvest a crop or the market to sell it to. “WHAT WE CARRY” AT THE JAMES LIBRARY “What We Carry,” an exhibit by Quincy-based artist Kayleigh MacDonald, will be on display at the James Library in Norwell from October 13 through November 10, with an opening reception on October 13, 6-8 p.m. MacDonald’s exhibit is an ongoing photographic investigation of sustained vigilance as a source of trauma. Portraits of women and gender non-conforming individuals with what is physically carried for protection serve as a point of entry for conversations surrounding self-preservation, collective trauma, and recent gender-based legislation. “What We Carry” contains difficult images, including portraits of individuals with guns. This project engages with the nuances and subtleties of weapon ownership, including the paradox of purchasing the very weapons used to target your own community. THE HINGHAM ARTS WALK Experience the arts while walking through downtown Hingham, as artists display their talents in shops, on the sidewalks, in open studios and in historic buildings. The Hingham Arts Walk takes place on October 15 from noon to 4 p.m. Visitors will be treated to fine art painting, illustration, photography, jewelry, mixed media, youth art, pottery, pastel, collage, wood and decorative arts in the exhibit. n the mid-’80s, a petite 20-something brunette was probably the last person you’d expect to upend a male-dominated industry, but that is exactly what Pembroke’s Jan Goodman did. It all started when Goodman, a newly minted UNH graduate with degrees in landscape design and horticultural technology, saw a help-wanted ad that read: “Love plants? Love people?” “I saw that ad and yelled out, ‘Yes! Yes I do!’,” laughs oodman.

In 2000, Goodman incorporated her new venture, Cityscapes, and the company’s more than three-decade run has been nothing short of remarkable. By gaining the trust and long-term business of some of the largest corporations, apartment buildings, institutions and hotels in Boston, she grew Cityscapes into the most successful interior and exterior landscape company in New England with annual revenue of more than ten million dollars. If you’ve spent any time in Boston, chances are pretty good that you have viewed a number of her company’s projects, including their spectacular, awardwinning holiday displays, which often feature full-sized antique sleighs and two story Christmas trees. oodman says that one reason why

ityscapes continues to flourish is that she

and her staff are continually educating themselves on trends and innovations in the industry, such as the construction of living walls - self-contained vertical gardens of plants placed into a custom metal framework and mounted to an existing wall. “We also now offer what we branded as Living Fernature ™,” she says. “Think of a coffee table or work surface with a mini-greenhouse of plants under the glass. What’s cool is that if you’re having a stressful moment at work, you can take a breath and get temporarily lost in the micro landscape.” These Living Fernature™ and living wall installations are meant to bring nature into the built environment – part of a design movement called biophilic design. Research has shown that contact with live plants results in reduced stress and increased productivity. Plants also naturally clean the air and improve the humidity levels in buildings.

She recently brought her daughter, Sam, in as the company’s director of marketing and she is delegating more work to her loyal staff of nearly 100, many of whom have been with the company for decades, and some since its inception. “I built a ‘she-shed’ in my backyard in Pembroke where I can work from home,” says Goodman. “Of course, I still go into the city to visit clients and collaborate on large-scale projects with my team, but I am able to work remotely because I have such an amazing staff. However, I have no plans to retire anytime soon because this career has never felt like work to me. It’s like the old saying, if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.”

UTOPIA FESTIVAL In 2022, Goodman became the majority owner in Utopia, New England’s premier horticulture and epicurean festival. The festival launched last March with thousands of people in attendance. “The festival was an explosion of experiences for the senses,” says Goodman. “We had mixologists making high-end cocktails from local spirits. We had charcuterie and candle making classes, and of course indoor and outdoor plant displays and workshops. Anything we could think of to help people live well and live inspired.” Goodman says that the festival has something for all ages and she loved seeing the diversity of the crowd. “It was like a mash-up of the generations,” she laughs. t isn’t uncommon for a home renovation project to evolve over time. That was certainly the case for this elegant Cohasset property overlooking the Gulf River. Initially, the homeowners reached out to designer Chris McGinty of CM Design because they wanted to reconfigure the hood above their range.

hat began as

a few small kitchen updates, however, quickly turned into a full kitchen renovation, then a first floor renovation, and eventually an extensive overhaul of the home’s interior as well as its exterior walls, roof, landscape and pool house. “It just kind of snowballed,” says McGinty. For the Gulf River project, McGinty worked closely with Hoadley Martinez Architects out of Cohasset and the team at Archwright Fine Home Builders and Estate Management in Duxbury to transform the home in a way that suited the family’s lifestyle while capitalizing on its spectacular location. At the time the project began, the family had two grown children living out of the house and one that was still in middle school. The couple chose to continue living in their home during the renovation process, which presented some logistical challenges but also meant that they were able to have excellent communication with the design team throughout the project. Since the family liked to entertain, the kitchen was a primary focus. itchen designer udith

of the Design Studio was brought on board to help coordinate the kitchen transformation. “One of the main goals was to open up the kitchen and make it more conversational,” explains McGinty. The Archwright team raised the kitchen ceiling, extended the room’s perimeter a bit and added floor-to-ceiling

the space a more wide open feeling. The centerpiece of the new kitchen was a very large kitchen island, designed to be a spot the family could gather around on holidays. One of the biggest splurges was a thick slab of marble that was selected for the top of the island. The overall design of the room was kept clean and simple, with white shaker cabinets and subway tile. Hand blown glass pendants above the island were chosen to personalize and elevate the space. A new wet bar was also created. And the original copper range hood, which provided the impetus for the entire renovation, was replaced with a stainless steel hood to coordinate better with the other kitchen

A new mudroom was built to serve as a convenient landing area for coats and boots and a formal dining room was transformed into a more user-friendly multi use space that would function as both a walk-in pantry and a custom homework area for the daughter. A powder room was updated with herringbone porcelain tile on the floors and a new vanity, mirrors, lighting and hardware. The home’s landscape and pool house were also completely transformed to accommodate the family’s desire to enjoy the outdoors and provide a relaxing retreat for family and guests.

Accordion doors on the side of the pool house open wide to provide a comfortable spot for the family to relax in the shade. A large sliding barn door was installed to separate the changing area. A triptych of surfboard images was hung above a blue couch and woven stools added a natural element. Outside the pool house, lounge chairs were adorned with easy-to-clean white sunbrella cushions. All of the surrounding hardscaping was done by Paragon Landscape and Construction in Hanover. The completed project showcases how outdoor living spaces can seamlessly be married together with a home.

artist and accomplished home chef/cookbook author turned interior designer (she’s the owner of Hingham Furniture & Design and Framing Concepts) Aveni has never shied away from a challenge or a chance to expand on her skills. But there’s one thing that she herself didn’t see coming – the fulfillment that would come from raising chickens in her backyard. The inspiration for her new hobby arose after Aveni noticed that eggs from commercially-raised chickens were making her feel ill. “Concerned that I might have an egg allergy, I spoke with my doctor,” says Aveni. “He explained it most likely isn’t an allergy. Conventional eggs from chickens raised in close quarters can release toxins from stress that seeps into their eggs and causes inflammation in the human body,” says Aveni. “I thought, well, I love eggs so I guess I’ll just have to build a chicken coop in my backyard and then treat my chickens like queens so they are happy!”

Hooha’s Stracciatella Soup Serves 2 to 3 2 large, farm-raised eggs 4 cups low-sodium chicken bone broth 4 teaspoons finely grated, lightly packed Parmesan cheese 1 tablespoon panko breadcrumbs (toasted for added flavor) or semolina flour Pinch of freshly ground black pepper Handful spinach leaves, sliced into 1/2-inch ribbons (can also use chard, arugula, sorrel, or any tender green) Place broth in a 2-quart saucepan and bring to a simmer. In a medium bowl whisk together the egg, Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs and black pepper. Once the stock is simmering, stir in the sliced spinach. Pour the egg mixture into the soup. Do not stir. After a few seconds, stir the mixture gently into the soup. Cook at a gentle simmer for another minute.

thing in the morning and do a daily clean up in their coop,” says Aveni. “Even though it seems a bit much, it actually feels like I’m slowing down because I am connecting to the natural rhythms of the day. People really cannot believe Diana Aveni is cleaning out a chicken coop! They know me as the Gucci-wearing lady who is always impeccably dressed.” But those closest to Aveni know that this new venture is not as much of a departure as it may seem. “I grew up in Connecticut where we had an enormous backyard garden,” she says. “I have professional culinary training and worked my way through college at high-end restaurants where I was inspired by quality ingredients. By building a greenhouse I am now able to step right outside and get that same quality.” Before her days as an interior designer, Aveni wrote and illustrated a series of three cookbooks titled, “Cooking to Please for Good Health and Happiness.” “That title was actually pretty foretelling,” says Aveni. “Because my own health has improved so much since I started raising chickens and growing my own produce. Besides being able to eat eggs again, my asthma and other allergies are so much better.” The free-spirited designer isn’t exactly sure what’s next for her, other than her determination to embrace a more relaxed pace after a very hectic and stressful COVID period. As for her husband, Aveni says he is always supportive of her sometimes ‘wacky and creative energy.’ “I never question my wife,” says Steve. “I could come home to a giraffe in our backyard and it wouldn’t surprise me.” And that’s a good thing, because a few weeks after our interview, without her husband’s knowledge, a box of baby ducks arrived at the Aveni’s home. “What can I say?” she laughs. uck eggs make the fluffiest pastry

Poppies with Purpose Fighting Cancer With Color t just 38 years old, while living in the city with her husband and two young girls, Lisa Carlin was shocked and devastated to receive a breast cancer diagnosis. She was facing a double mastectomy, eight doses of chemotherapy plus six weeks of daily radiation. “I had to really dig deep to get through that dark time,” says Carlin. “So I turned to my closet and pulled out my hot pink ballet flats and decided to wear them to my treatments. It gave me courage and bravery while the bright pink color lifted my spirits and could always spark a conversation with other patients, my nurses and doctors. It connected us.” When her own personal cancer battle was finally behind her,

She had a background in interior design and architecture and when a friend connected her with Ann Williams, a London-born footwear designer, she was off and running. “The inspiration for the name comes from the poppy pattern on my grandmother’s housecoat, which my mom made into a quilt to comfort me during my cancer treatments. That same 1950s pattern is now printed on the duster bag we package and deliver each pair of Poppies in,” says Carlin. hile the first pairs of oppies were manufactured in the signature pink for breast cancer, Carlin has since introduced a navy version for colorectal cancer and a tangerine pair for kidney cancer and leukemia. Since launching the business in 2022 and showcasing the Signature Pink shoe at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Walk in Boston, Carlin has donated a part of her profits to cancer research specifically researcHERS, a group supporting grants for female cancer scientists), as well as to local organizations such as Runway for Recovery that give funds directly to individual cancer patients and survivors. Carlin says that even beyond the patients themselves, their caregivers, loved ones and even colleagues will often purchase and wear Poppies in a show of support and solidarity. “Cancer can be a very isolating experience,” she says. “I like to say that Poppies were designed to bring courage, color and connection to the lives of patients fighting the very same battle that did. She continues to share her message and mission with her customers and community. In fact, inside the right shoe of every pair, wearers will find a printed message from Carlin: “live each day with a pop of color.”

n 2019, Hingham resident Kenzie Blackwell took her daughter and a few friends to volunteer at Hope and Comfort in Needham, an organization that provides personal care products like soap and shampoo to those in need. “I remember looking around the supply room and seeing a very small stack of period products,” says Blackwell. “I asked the tour guide if these items were in demand and was told that the need is so great, they literally cannot keep them in stock.” fter doing some research, Blackwell was horrified to learn that 1 in 4 teens in Massachusetts struggle to afford period products. “I also learned that this leads to many missed days of school due to embarrassment and lack of agency to buy their own products given the expense,” says Blackwell. Beyond school-aged children, Blackwell also discovered that women of all ages suffer from lack of access to these products.

the costs,” she says. “And this imposes a barrier to equity in education and employment.” Armed with these facts, she approached the staff at her local church, St. John the Evangelist in Hingham, and with their support, created an outreach ministry to help bridge the gap. “The assistance and encouragement from the congregation and the community has been so amazing,” says Blackwell. “After many months of planning and fundraising, we did our first distribution in

Since then, Blackwell has secured corporate sponsorships and alliances with manufacturers such as Kotex, and the locally-owned brand, Unicorn, which makes organic products. hese relationships have enabled ree. to benefit from bulk purchasing. he non-profit can now fund a one month supply of products for just $2.50 per person. “This means that for a donation of $30, you are funding a full year’s supply of much-needed period products for an individual in need,” says Blackwell. “Since we do not have employees or salaries, every penny you donate goes right out the door.” The organization now distributes free supplies to area schools and organizations such as Wellspring, Interfaith Social Services, and many more, delivering over 631,000 period products since their inception. In addition, they are working to sponsor state legislation that may ultimately end period insecurity. “We recently conducted a needs assessment and found that 92 percent of responding schools in Massachusetts do not have adequate funding for supplies,” says Blackwell. Free. is working to make period products as readily available as toilet paper in public schools. “No student should have to miss school during their period,” says Blackwell.

ver the course of her twenty plus years as a licensed massage therapist, Duxbury’s Leigh Lench Smith lost count of how many female clients complained about chest pain when lying face down on the massage table. “In my practice, I work exclusively with women, many of whom are pregnant with tender breasts, or recovering from breast surgery,” she says. “In 2020, while working on yet another client who rolled over and said ‘ouch,’ a lightbulb went off. I thought there just had to be a way to make women more comfortable.” Smith was on a mission and was able to use a period of downtime while she was healing from foot surgery to design, patent and ultimately manufacture the Comfort Pad by Featherstones. The molded Talalay foam pad helps women breathe a sigh of relief by supporting their breasts when face down on massage and chiropractic tables, MRI machines, chaise lounges and even in their own beds for stomach sleepers. “The foam is made from the sap of rubber trees in southeast Asia. They don’t have to cut the tree down to get the sap, so it’s sustainable,” says Smith. All of the manufacturing is done in the United States – the forms are molded in Connecticut and the fabric covers are sewn in a factory in Fall River.

Since Smith uses the “Comfort Pad” with her own massage clients, she has been able to see firsthand what a difference it makes when women are lying prone on a firm surface. Because designed it and tested the prototype, I wasn’t really surprised by the positive feedback,” she says. What has surprised Smith, however, is the fact that people have found other uses for her invention. Customers have used the pad for post-surgical comfort after orthopedic surgery, by supporting and propping up a leg, hip or arm. Others take it on flights for back or hip comfort since it can be folded in half and slipped into a carry-on bag. “The thing I really didn’t see coming,” says Smith “is that one of my clients took the pad to her job as a technician at Boston

n their very first date, hannon and evin Burke shared enough ghost chili peppers to bring an ordinary mortal to their knees. or those who may not know the three-inch ghost chili pepper, which has a red and wrinkly-looking skin, is one of the hottest peppers in the world, ranking high above alapenos and habaneros.

their relationship to a new level, the experience remains scorched in hannon s memory. was in pain for hours afterward, says hannon, but with a smile. hat initial encounter brought them together as a couple and ultimately planted the seeds of their homegrown hot sauce business, Burke s Hot auce. he Burkes latest venture, he ermentary, is a one-of-a-kind tasting and tap room that opened in eptember..

Humble—Yet Hot—Beginnings The Burkes, who both had full-time careers and a young daughter to care for, took advantage of the pandemic shutdown to pause and plant a garden full of hot pepper plants, mostly habanero. Kevin, a practiced homebrewer of beer, turned his attention to a hot sauce-making kit. The original recipe called for red habanero with red onion, red bell pepper, carrots and garlic. he first few batches were way too hot, he recalls.

says hannon. f you think it s hot now, you can only imagine how hot it was before. Having majored in biology in college, Kevin sought to elevate their namesake hot sauce by creating a long-lasting fermented version, rather than a fresh blend that would have a short shelf life. Each handcrafted batch of hot sauce is covered with a salt brine that prevents penetration from outside bacteria, while enhancing the natural flavors. The Burkes presented their perfected product to their trusted tastetesters and received rave reviews. Fueled by encouragement from friends, they decided to take their hot sauce public for the first time at the Hanover Farmers Market in May of 2021. Just two hours later, they were sold out of their supply of 150 bottles of hot sauce. t that point, evin and hannon could have continued making small batches of hot sauce in their home kitchen to sell at weekly farmers markets—but they began to realize that things were really heating up for Burke s Hot auce.

at markets for a hobby, so we decided to see how far we could go with it. o that end, hannon enrolled in an accelerated business planning course at Bridgewater tate niversity and worked around the clock on a five-year business plan for their burgeoning hot sauce enterprise. The couple secured a space in a shared commissary kitchen in Norwell so they could boost production to meet everincreasing demand. When the commissary kitchen eventually closed, they realized they needed a larger space for sauce-making to bring their product to a broader market.

The couple envisioned a communal gathering space on the South Shore where hot sauce enthusiasts could come to enjoy beer, wine, light fare and each other’s company. fter searching for over a year and nearly settling on a different location, the storefront at 200 Webster Street in Hanover became available. he former site of Burke s lewerks no relation to hannon and evin featured a brewing area in the back and a tap room with a long L-shaped bar and seating area out front. “When we saw this space, it just made sense,” says Shannon. “It’s such a uni ue and specific application, with the taps and the bar, and the layout is ideal.” Now, instead of beer being brewed in the back room, the area is set up for hot sauce-making with an industrial-sized kettle, blender and bottle-filler, as well as plenty of shelving for storing finished products. Visitors to The Fermentary will be able to peer through a pair of windows into the hot-sauce making process. With beer taps and a cold room already in place, the Burkes have plans to pour local craft beers alongside their hot sauce. To start, they’ll serve brews from Untold Brewing in Scituate, Vitamin Sea Brewing in Weymouth, Trillium Brewing Company in Canton, and Widowmaker Brewing Co. in Braintree. In addition, they’ll offer a selection of natural wines as well as snacks and small plates for visitors to en oy while relaxing on the couch, in front of the fireplace, or at one of the many tables at the Fermentary.
