Actually, it’s quite the opposite.

Year after year, the largest media and telecom corporations are voted among the most disliked brands in the country.

Which makes sense.

They charge too much. Provide misleading offers and bundles. Not to mention the terrible customer service.

“Have you unplugged it and plugged it back in? Oh. You’ll need a tech; how’s a month from now?”

But here in-lies the rub: What can we do?

We can’t exactly go down the street to “Mark’s Media” or “Tiffany’s Telecom.” With all due respect to our neighbor Mark, his entertainment won’t be on par with that of the global cable providers.

And we love Tiffany from down the street, but we find it hard to believe she’ll be able to muster anything more than a glorified walkietalkie. Let alone nationwide 5G.

So we put up with it. And we pay. Then when prompted, we pay some more.

It’s so obvious they care more about themselves than people like us. It’s frustrating, feeling stuck, without a choice.

Similarly, many assume the same to be true with banks. Well, year after year, the big-banks are consistently among the most-hated retail brands.

But for your finances, there is a viable local option. An opportunity to upgrade on all fronts.

For example, our mobile app is higher rated than most of the big-bank offerings. Our debit card is powered by MasterCard; so, you’re all set there. And yet there is one item in which we greatly differ from the other guys: Our purpose as an institution.

Our Purpose: Everything we do is to improve the quality of living, working, and raising a family in the communities we serve. This is in stark contrast to the publicly traded big-banks; they exist solely to increase shareholder value.

It seems this message has gotten out. In the last year alone, over 3,000 local residents upgraded to NESB Checking. And our ability to partner locally in delivering on this mission has been so successful, that Forbes has rated us a Best-In-State Bank two years running.

So yes, we’re all stuck with those lousy cable and internet providers. However, you don’t have to feel so hopeless about your bank.

NESB Checking from North Easton Savings Bank. Upgrade to a local partner.

Not many people would claim to like their cable-internet provider.

Making Waves

utumn is one of my favorite seasons to explore the South Shore. The air is crisp, the sunshine is golden, and nearly every weekend is brimming with food fests and pumpkin picking. While northern New England is renowned for its vibrant foliage, the South Shore also showcases vibrant colors–you just need to know where to look. Be sure to check out our photo essay, which features beautiful fall images by Marshfield photographer Heather Tradd, as well as our “Viewfinder” story, which features a stunning autumn image by photographer Mark Grandmont.

If you’re interested in spicing up your fall cooking, you need look no further than Plympton’s Hippy Pilgrim farm stand. Check out writer Judy Fosdick’s feature, “For the Love of Garlic,” to learn how business owner Susannah Locketti turned her passion for garlic salt into a popular artisanal seasonings brand. While you’re at it, you can whet your palate looking over some of Locketti’s favorite fall recipes. Beer lovers will appreciate writer Ann Luongo’s “Brewery News” feature, which spotlights some of the region’s recent beer happenings and newest (or soon-to-open) taprooms worth visiting.

Every year, we dedicate a large portion of our fall issue to stories that highlight inspirational women on the South Shore. Writer Juliette Pennington’s story, “Movie Studio Maven,” shines a light on the life of Hingham resident Marina Cappi, a single mother of two young children who has single-handedly transformed New England’s film industry by opening Marina Studios (one of the country’s only woman-owned film studios) at Marina Bay in Quincy. Similarly, our “Empowering Women in Business” section is filled with inspiring career stories of local women who have turned their dreams into reality. In addition, writer David Kindy interviewed Nancy Rubin Stuart, the executive director of the Cape Cod Writers Center and author of numerous books that document the lives of notable women in American history.

Read Judy Fosdick’s feature, “Rediscovering The Art Complex Museum,” to see a different type of local color. Celebrating its 50+1 anniversary, the museum recently reopened following a long closure for renovations. If you’ve never been before (or if it’s been a while since your last visit) now would be a great time to experience the beauty inside and on the grounds of this fantastic arts institution. Don’t forget to check our calendar for a listing of great community events happening in the coming months.

Lastly, if you subscribe to South Shore Home, Life & Style, we recently sent you a free copy of our newest annual publication, Hingham Life. The Power of a Picture

Working with small business owners, I get the pleasure of meeting amazing people each and every day. One such individual who deserves some recognition is Hingham photographer Sarah Hinchey. Each year, as we prepare to highlight inspiring local business women in the fall issue of South Shore Home, Life & Style, we call upon Sarah to ensure that each individual feels and looks fantastic.

While most of these women have plenty of confidence when it comes to their jobs, they’re not always comfortable being in front of the camera. These nerves melt away, however, when Sarah and her talented hair and makeup assistant Lisa Grisolia work their magic. In the few years we have worked together, I have heard numerous rave reviews from her photo subjects, so much so that I recently decided to swallow my own fear of the camera and book a portrait session. Blessed with a kind manner and impeccable photography skills, I now fully understand what everyone was raving about.

Sarah explained it to me this way: “I believe that the way we see ourselves is the way we treat ourselves, and it is my mission to help every person I photograph see that they are perfect, exactly the way they are right now.” I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and so happy that we can share this experience with an amazing group of South Shore women each year.

SARAH HINCHEY is a portrait photographer with a studio in downtown Hingham with a unique talent for putting people at ease in front of the camera. Her mission is to build self-love and confidence in every person she photographs, reflecting back to them the beauty that everyone else sees. For this issue, Hinchey captured stunning portraits of local business women for our Empowering Women in Business section.

DAVID KINDY is a freelance writer and book reviewer who lives in Plymouth. An avid history lover, he has written about a wide range of topics for such publications as Air & Space, Military History, the Providence Journal and Smithsonian Magazine. For this issue, Kindy penned an article about Plymouth author Nancy Rubin Stuart, Executive Director of the Cape Cod Writers Center and the author of numerous books about influential women throughout history.

STEPHANIE NEIL is the editor of OEM Magazine as well as a freelance journalist whose expertise is in uncovering captivating stories about smart manufacturing and game-changing technologies. A longtime South Shore resident, she loves writing about entrepreneurs and everyday heroes making a difference in the community. For this issue, Neil learned about life at The Pinehills in Plymouth and the inspiring women who make it a great place to live and work.

DERRICK ZELLMANN is an award-winning photographer whose work has been published both nationally and internationally. His work blends artistic vision and advanced technical skill allowing him to creatively capture people, food, fashion and more. For this issue, he met up with Hingham resident Marina Cappi, the owner of Marina Studios in Quincy, one of the country’s only woman-owned film studios.

Scenic fall photography by Heather Tradd

Marshfield resident Heather Tradd has a passion for landscape and nature photography. Living close to the beach, she heads out to take pictures nearly every morning at sunrise, and often again at sunset when the landscape is bathed in golden light. Fall is one of her favorite seasons to explore the South Shore in search of scenic photo opportunities. Her photo collection features numerous seaside sunsets and surprising autumn pops of color at places like Jacob’s Pond in Norwell, Bay Farm in Duxbury and Norris Reservation in Norwell. Tradd recently began taking photos using a drone, which has allowed her to capture even more unique perspectives of the South Shore.

“Photography is my creative outlet,” says Tradd. “The community of photographers on the South Shore is great. I’ve met a lot of talented and really nice people.” To view more examples of her work, follow Heather Tradd on Instagram @heather.tradd.

WOMAN AND MACHINE

Metal artist Karen Sullivan is the founder of Woman And Machine (WAM), a Plympton-based trade school that teaches women (and men) the art of welding. When Sullivan first launched her business in 2018, she was working with several other women to hold single-day welding and automotive workshops all around the United States. She is now focused solely on teaching students at her Plympton workshop.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always wanted to help more women get into the trades, either via my original route, which was through a women’s automotive magazine, to the more hands-on approach with Woman And Machine where I teach basic skills for automotive, welding and fabrication. Prior to establishing Woman And Machine, I had been laid off from a local car dealership and then I became pregnant with my daughter. My husband and I decided that I would be a stay-at-home mom, but I always have to be doing something so I took to the garage and started working on our current “project” vehicles while my daughter Charlotte was napping or after she went to bed at night. The idea of teaching came at a later date when I had some other ladies ask if I would teach them how to weld. I had already been looking at going back to school to get a teaching degree and I knew how to weld, so I tried it out and fell in love with it.

How did you learn welding?

I was trained by my husband who has been welding since he was 14 years old. He has worked in numerous shops and holds numerous welding certificates. Currently he is a pipefitter/welder in the Local 537 and he has been internationally awarded for his welding skills. Lincoln Electric, a large welding manufacturing company, heard what I was trying to do and stepped forward to offer their support and send me to school at their location in Ohio.

How often do you offer your 6-week welding program?

I offer a 6 week program every fall for beginners and every spring I host an intermediate course.

24 HERE AND NOW

Are you still doing the vehicle maintenance classes?

I still do vehicle maintenance classes, just not as much as my welding classes. I enjoy teaching these classes because I feel everyone should know more about their vehicles, such as where the spare tire is, what it takes to change a tire, and what’s under the hood, etc. We spend a lot of money on our vehicles and we also spend a lot of time in our vehicles so it makes sense to want to know more about them.

What do you love most about working with metal and teaching?

I love that I can manipulate this material with heat and turn it into something recognizable using objects I’ve found in scrap piles, from silverware and horseshoes to car parts. My favorite part of teaching is when I get to share my knowledge with students and they see just how amazing welding is. The excitement is contagious. Watching my students move into a more creative mindset and begin to build confidence in their skills is very rewarding.

Fall Workshops

Six Week Welding Program (Wednesday evenings September 21 - October 26): This introductory Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding course will cover safety, setting the welder appropriately, the basics of fabrication, small weld projects, etc.

Pumpkin Class (October 11): A three hour metal art course that leads students through the steps for making a metal pumpkin out of found objects.

Intro to Metal Art (October 15,16): A two-day introduction to metal art course. Participants will be exposed to numerous metal working tools and make their own piece of art on day two.

SEASIDE SOIRÉE WITH HEART H COLE curates meaningful

coastal experiences

on the South

Shore.

Elle Jarvis, the creator of the culinary lifestyle brand H COLE, believes in intentional entertaining. With a professional background in hospitality and experiential marketing, and a passion for cooking that was sparked while managing chef Barbara Lynch’s demo kitchen, Stir, Jarvis has become an expert at designing food and drink events that are not only memorable, but also meaningful.

28 FALL 2022 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE HERE AND NOW

Having traveled all over the world for her previous jobs, Jarvis was excited to return to her hometown of Marshfield to start her very own boutique catering business. She launched H COLE in the summer of 2021 with the help of her longtime friend, Erik Morrill. Offering more than just delicious meals, the company hosts intimate culinary experiences that celebrate local heritage and foodways.

“We truly believe that the South Shore of Massachusetts is a magical place and should be enjoyed and celebrated by all,” says Jarvis, whose business name and logo was inspired by a buoy branding tool she came across that had once been owned by her great uncle, Howard “Mecca” Cole, who was a fireman, lobsterman and cranberry farmer.

Jarvis works with many local food purveyors to secure the freshest ingredients, from lobstermen and fishermongers to farmers and vintners.

H COLE’s unique offerings include a special Fish Tales dinner series at Mullaney’s Harborside Fish Market and an all-inclusive lobster charter aboard Kestrel Fishing Charters that comes with the makings for a cold fried chicken picnic. Jarvis also collaborated with Rachael Meyers at The Collective Co. to create Coastal Commons, which offers bougie beach picnic packages that take the traditional New England lobster bake to new levels. FISHERMEN KNOW BEST

MacKenzie’s coastal products are making waves on the South Shore and beyond.

Sometimes, necessity is the mother of invention. As the story goes, when longtime Norwell resident Michael Ayles and Hank DeWolf of Rhode Island came home one day after a long day of fishing, they found themselves faced with a dilemma: how to clean a day’s worth of bait, scales and fish odors off their hands. Unable to find a cleanser that worked well, the duo set out to create a new product that would solve their problem.

Last year, the pair launched MacKenzie’s Fisherman Hand Scrub, a product made with ingredients like walnut husk and lemon essential oils, designed to effectively clean and deodorize hands leaving them feeling fresh and smooth. Fast forward to today, and MacKenzie’s now offers an assortment of personal care products, from hand scrubs and salves to shower bars, sunscreen and after-sun cooling lotion.

to eliminate strong odors from foods like onions and garlic off their hands and cutting boards, and they have developed a cult following in the gardening community thanks to their ability to remove stubborn dirt and stains.

Handcrafted for life by the sea and manufactured in small batches at a facility near the coast of New Hampshire, MacKenzie’s personal care products are popping up in coastal boutiques across the South Shore, and beyond. Local retailers that carry the MacKenzie’s line include: Welch Co. in Scituate, Three Buoys and a Mermaid in Duxbury, Oropa in Duxbury, Acquire Good in Hingham, Locally, Yours in Plymouth, and Wish Gift Co. in Sandwich.

Christine McMackin & Tobi Baker-Daigle

When Christine McMackin and Tobi Baker-Daigle established New England Skin Center in 2018, their goal was to create a luxury medical spa that would serve a destination for the highest level of regenerative and aesthetic skin care services. Located in Weymouth and serving the greater Boston and South Shore region, NESC is a welcoming and judgment-free facility that offers an extensive array of body contouring and sculpting procedures, injectables and fillers, as well as facials, Nutrient IV therapy, and much more.

McMackin, a certified family nurse practitioner with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and BakerDaigle, a highly specialized Cosmetic Registered Nurse Injector with over a decade of experience in the medical field, each take great pride in helping clients not only achieve their beauty goals, but also instill them with a renewed sense of self-confidence.

“The work we do at NESC goes deeper than the skin,” says McMackin, who emphasizes the importance of prioritizing self-care. “One of our gifts at NESC is being able to see the beauty in our clients that they may not see in themself, and bringing that beauty out in however it chooses to express itself. We do that through genuine love.”

Always striving to raise the bar and expand their offerings, NESC was recently awarded a medical license by the Department of Health, a status possessed by only a handful of medical clinics in the state which recognizes that the facility is functioning at the highest level of patient care and safety. Their Weymouth location is currently undergoing a massive expansion and renovation and a second NESC location is slated to open in Sudbury in the coming months.

“Our newly expanded Weymouth location will be a state-of-the-art facility unlike anything the South Shore has seen,” says McMackin. “It will be a space that is welcoming to all and will offer services to address all of your aging concerns, from head to toe.”

Owners of Classic Tile & Stone, Inc 781-741-5230 | classictile-stone.com

Ever since Julie Ryan and Kristin Henaghan launched their business, Classic Tile & Stone, Inc. in 2003, the two sisters have been helping South Shore designers, decorators and homeowners add personal style to their kitchens and bathrooms through the selection of unique and beautiful tiles. While some of the people who visit their Hingham showroom already have an idea of what they are looking for, many rely on Ryan and Henaghan for their expert guidance.

“When a new client comes into our showroom they are usually very excited because they are finally doing a long-awaited renovation or building their dream home,” says Henaghan. “We encourage our customers to bring us photos and sometimes building materials that they are using as inspiration.” In some instances, the women will also do site visits to get a first-hand look at the space being decorated. “We listen to our client’s wants and needs and we help them decide on materials that will not only aesthetically look good but also function well for their families.”

Ryan and Henaghan have developed very strong relationships in the design community. Prior to launching their business, they both worked at the Boston Design Center. Julie created showroom

displays and Kristin was a showroom manager. It was there, surrounded by recreations of gorgeous kitchens and bathrooms that the two women fell in love with the transformational power of tile. After 10 years working in Boston, the duo decided to open their own tile showroom on the South Shore.

A respected women-owned business in a very male dominated industry, Classic Tile & Stone is a destination for everything from beautiful ceramic and glass tiles to cement and natural stone. Ryan and Henaghan have worked on many exciting design projects over the years, including gorgeous vacation homes all across the United States, chic boutique hotels and a few homes that have been filmed and featured on television. Being an owneroperated showroom is one of the factors that sets their business apart. “Clients love that they are working with the owners and not a salesperson who is ready to clock out at 5 p.m.,” says Henaghan.

“I really think our customer service is what keeps clients coming back over and over again,” says Henaghan. “We want our clients to leave knowing that no matter the size or scale of their project that their job is important to us and we want them to be happy and love their space.”

Rediscoveringthe ART COMPLEX MUSEUM

10 Reasons to visit Duxbury’s newly renovated cultural gem.

Looking for an enriching fall excursion? Consider a trip to the Art Complex Museum (ACM). Nestled in the woods of Duxbury, this museum recently reopened following a two-year closure for renovations of its elegant building and surrounding grounds. In the spring of 2022, the ACM marked its 50+1 anniversary by welcoming newcomers and return visitors back to its elegant galleries. From the extensive permanent collection and inspiring works by contemporary artists, to the numerous whimsical sculptures that dot the surrounding landscape, the ACM is a beloved art institution where guests can enjoy the beauty of nature and art.

A Family’s Collection

The Art Complex Museum’s co-founder Carl A. Weyerhaeuser (1901-1996) had the good fortune to come from a family whose multimillion dollar lumber enterprise allowed him to begin collecting art in college. In time, Carl and his wife Edith filled their home with hundreds of pieces, including Shaker furniture, American paintings, European and American prints, and Asian art. As their home filled with art, the couple planned and built a museum to share their collection. Since 1971 the museum has proudly shown Carl and Edith’s treasures next to works by contemporary artists, adhering to the founder’s vision, “to create a place that inspired curiosity, where people from the community could gather, enjoy beauty, and learn about the arts.”

The Founders Room

As part of its strategic plan, the museum wanted to add space for its extensive Asian art collection and honor its 50th anniversary. The museum library was reimagined to create the Founders Room. Visitors can follow an illustrated timeline about the museum’s beginnings. The whole collection is at your fingertips using a touch-screen monitor. Curate your own art exhibit. Step up to a light table. Move around picture cards of collection works to create your own show. Fall into a chair with a book from the library or watch a video of a tea ceremony in the museum’s cherished Japanese tea house. The video allows guests to view the tea ceremony year round even though it takes place only a few times each summer. In the corner of the space, is a display of art and antiques that pays tribute to Carl and Edith Weyerhaeuser’s family collection.

60 FALL 2022 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE ART COMPLEX MUSEUM
An embroidered silk wall hanging called “The Pink Lady” by the family, greets visitors to the Founders Room.

An Outdoor Experience

The museum is located on Alden Street, on 12 acres of peaceful woodland. The landscape invites visitors to walk or wheel on paved pathways set close to plants, trees, and sculptures. Museum director Charles Weyerhaeuser, the son of the founders, explains that the new ADA-compliant paths tie together the education building, the tea house, and the main gallery.

“The landscape sets the mood for the museum experience, heightens the senses, and prepares the guests to be receptive to new ideas,” says Weyerhaeuser. Part of the experience is viewing sculpture in the new “Please Approach the Bench” exhibit. Five New England artists created sculptural benches, which offer an element of surprise along the woodland path.

Exhibits, Concerts and Tea Ceremony, Oh My!

Because exhibitions change every two months, a guest can return to the ACM again and again and always see something new. Edith Weyerhaeuser (1912-2000) explained how the museum got its unusual name. “We wanted the Complex to fulfill so many things that we’ve always been interested in. Music is art, architecture is art and photography and books are important. There are also the meetings, talks, demonstrations and classes. All these things make it a ‘complex’ rather than just a museum.”

61 www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com
Museum director Charles Weyerhaeuser is the son of the museum’s founders. The museum’s wavy roofline mimics lapping waves of Duxbury’s coastal location.

From Asia with Love

The museum’s founders made collecting art a part of their travels to Asia. Kojiro Tomita, curator of Asian art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, guided the Weyerhaeusers’ purchases as they expanded their art collection to include more than 1,500 pieces of early 20th-century Japanese ceramics. Tomita also commissioned the construction of a tea house in Japan, which was disassembled and sent to Duxbury to be assembled on the museum grounds in 1975. A tea master performs tea ceremonies at Sho- fu-an, or “ Wind in the Pines” tea house several times each summer and early fall. Mark your calendars for the next Japanese Tea Ceremony which will take place September 25.

The Outdoors In

Under the museum’s curved wooden beams lie grand windows that add natural light to the gallery exhibits inside. As colored leaves flutter on tree branches playing with sunlight and shadows outside the museum, visitors inside enjoy the museum’s woodland setting through the large windows. Entering the museum, visitors stand in awe of a breathtaking Tiffany stained glass window, which serves as a dramatic backdrop to the Phoenix Gallery. The window had a rotting wooden frame when ACM’s first director, Ture Bengtz rescued it from the St. Paul home of Carl Weyerhaeuser’s mother, Maud Moore Weyerhaeuser Sanborn. Restored and installed at the museum, the grand window is a prelude to the magnificent art guests will see in this delightful space.

Celebration Mural

The Art Complex Museum welcomed local multimedia artist Marcia Ballou as an artist in residence during the month of July. A large outdoor mural created in Ballou’s signature joyful style can now be viewed on the museum grounds. Titled “Celebration,” the mural was inspired by a wildflower field and features a kaleidoscope of vibrant flowers, birds, dragonflies and butterflies.

“To many kids and some adults, the ACM gives them a first exposure to a museum and we hope a rewarding experience, so they will return, “ says Weyerhaeuser, who enjoys hearing visitors recall memories of visiting the museum as a child. “Hearing from volunteers that the ACM has been an enrichment to their lives, artists proud that they have a piece of art included in an ACM collection . . . these are gratifying as they continue to provide the benefits my parents hoped for when they built the ACM.”

A Growing Collection

The museum’s collection includes more than 8,000 pieces, and continues to grow. A committee meets regularly to discuss ideas for new acquisitions. If a member of the committee learns of a particular artist’s work, a visit to the artist’s studio may include an invitation to exhibit at the museum, followed by a purchase. A visitor can see cutting-edge contemporary art alongside works from the collection by such artists as Albrecht Durer, Childe Hassam, Thomas Hart Benton, George Bellows, Richard Estes, and many more.

It’s All FREE!

Admissions, gallery talks, concerts, tea ceremonies, and woodland sculpture walks are all free at the Art Complex Museum. Located close to fine restaurants, historic houses, ice cream shops, and Duxbury Beach, the Art Complex Museum is a great addition to any trip to Duxbury.

In 2020, ACM education coordinator Sally Dean Mello designed and spearheaded the creation of a beautiful herring run mosaic near the entrance to the museum. Inspired by the fish that was so important to the Wampanoag and English settlers, the mosaic is 23 feet long and features the handiwork of over 40 individuals from multiple South Shore towns. Lisa Howard of Local Pottery Studio + Gallery in Pembroke developed special high-fired tiles for the mosaic and project participants volunteered their time to help with the mural’s creation and contributed small rocks from Rexhame to Maine to be included.

66 FALL 2022 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE MARINA STUDIOS

Hingham’s Marina Cappi is transforming New England’s film industry one film studio at a time—and making history in the process.

When Marina Cappi was a little girl, her grandfather told her that she could be whatever she wanted to be, and do whatever she wanted to do. Clearly, the founder of Quincy’s Marina Studios took those words of encouragement to heart, as she is now not only a film producer, but at the helm of one of the country’s only woman-owned movie studios–with a production schedule booked several years out.

A 33-year-old mother of 3-year-old twins, Cappi’s rocketing career trajectory may at first sound surprising. But if you ask the Hingham resident about her transition into the film industry, she’ll tell you that it just made good business sense.

“My background is in construction, commercial real estate and finance,” says Cappi, a Rochester, N.Y., native, who moved to Boston 16 years ago to attend Suffolk University. Aside from a year when she moved home to care for her ailing grandfather, she has remained in the greater Boston area ever since.

“If you look at what I have built, it’s kind of a mix of all three of the things I was doing before,” she says. “Making a movie is actually a lot like running a large construction project. It was a smooth transition for me once I met and partnered with my production company [Compelling Pictures, cofounded by Denis O’Sullivan and East Boston native Jeff Kalligheri].”

67 www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

Cappi recognized that there was a growing need for studio space in Massachusetts, due in large part to a 2005 tax incentive program that was originally scheduled to expire in January 2023, which was made permanent by the Massachusetts Legislature last year. The exponential growth of streaming services in recent years has also led to increased interest in filming in the Bay State. “The need for content is enormous,” says Cappi.

When she first saw the former Marina Bay Sportsplex, which had closed during the pandemic, she envisioned it as an opportunity to make a big splash in the New England film industry. Cappi purchased the Victory Road campus in 2021 and proceeded to have the facility transformed into a modern, 26,000-square-foot soundstage with a 14,000-square-foot production office and a 3-acre backlot.

“I noticed that there weren’t any soundstages close to the city. Quincy is 8 miles away from the airport, which makes it very convenient to fly people in and out,” says Cappi, who notes that the Marina Bay location also had a lot of other things going for it.

“It’s very much a live/work/play environment. It’s on the water, there are plenty of restaurants and short-term housing and apartments... you don’t have to leave for any reason.”

Now fully invested in her career change, Cappi recently had another 32,000-square-foot soundstage constructed in Canton, which opened in early July. She notes that there’s enough work to go around and looks forward to collaborating with New England Studios, a large facility that opened in Devens in 2014.

“There’s plenty of work for all,” concurs Gary Crossen, general manager of New England Studios. “This is a great opportunity for additional jobs, and a woman opening a business here is only a plus to the Massachusetts economy and to Massachusetts society.”

The first production to use the space at Marina Studios was the Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (scheduled to release in December), which was directed by Kasi Lemmons, written by Anthony McCarten, and for which Cappi was an executive producer. “The team that I worked with on “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” was so talented and the strong friendships that came from this production are very special to me,” says Cappi.

The need for content is enormous. There is a huge lack of space for filming throughout the country.

I have found an amazing community with the number of women that are in the film industry. In addition, I have a strong support system from the Women in Film and Video in New England organization and I have participated as a keynote speaker discussing the roles of female storytellers.

Upcoming projects at Marina Studios include “The Collaboration,” a film about the complicated relationship between artists Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and “The Blur,” a horror film centered around a same-sex couple that is directed by Joe Miale. Cappi is currently producing “Daddy Issues,” a coming-of-age story about three adult women that is being directed by Katie Cassidy (who is also making her directorial debut), which will begin filming at Marina Studios in October. Cappi said she isn’t at liberty to talk about some of the other projects in which she/her studio is involved, “So many nondisclosure agreements,” she quips.

Cappi admits to daily “pinch me” moments, and says that being in the movie industry uses her background in a very practical way, but also allows her to be creative at the same time. She likens her excitement for her newfound career to the feeling of satisfaction she would experience when visualizing a construction project before it was built and then seeing it come to fruition. “You’re visualizing a story and seeing it come to life on the screen,” she says.

“I have found an amazing and supportive community with the amount of women that are in the film industry,” says Cappi. “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” was directed by Kasi Lemmons and it was such a joy being able to collaborate with her on that incredible film. In addition, I have a strong support system from the local Women in Film and Video in New England organization and I have participated as a keynote speaker discussing the roles of female storytellers.”

Ever since Marina Studios got off the ground, Cappi has been traveling more for work, but says she’s fortunate that her daughter and son are young enough to be able to accompany her. When she’s not on the road, she makes time to go to the beach with her kids and in her limited free time, she enjoys playing golf and practicing yoga. “Half of the reason I moved to Hingham is because of Krigsman Yoga,” says Cappi. “It’s my favorite yoga studio on the planet!”

Cappi readily admits that juggling a demanding career and parenting is not always easy. “There are not enough hours in a day so I just finish as much as possible and I prioritize,” she says. “I do put the kids first, and then I just make it work.” Cappi says she believes her grandfather, who died in 2013, would be proud of her. “I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be – but I’m just getting started.”

10 Women who help to make life great at The Pinehills.

hen most people think of The Pinehills, they think about beautiful homes, miles of walking trails, award-winning golf courses, and convenient shops, services and restaurants.

However, some of the greatest (and often-overlooked) features of this charming New England village are the wonderful people who contribute to the Pinehills lifestyle in unique and inspiring ways. From hair stylists and sushi chefs to the president and general counsel, these inspiring women make The Pinehills a special place to live and visit.

TRINH VO

General Dentist, Beacon Dental Health

If you tell Trinh Vo she can’t do something, she’ll show you how she can. Someone once suggested she marry a dentist, but instead, she became one. She spent five years in the army, as a dentist, before joining the Beacon Dental Health practice at The Pinehills. Born in Vietnam, Dr.Vo moved to this country at age 11. Her strong work ethic has led to many accomplishments, and she will teach her two young girls how to do the same, noting: “They will be bilingual and grow up to be strong, independent women.” Indeed, they will—just like their mom.

MELISSA COLANGELO Director

Farmer’s Market at Rye Tavern

Melissa Colangelo is a locavore who’s passionate about farming, food security and supporting small business. In addition to sourcing local foods for the restaurant, she started the Farmer’s Market at Rye Tavern last year as a safe, outdoor space to shop. It has grown to over 40 vendors and is now situated on the lawn by the tavern’s outdoor bar. Colangelo has a half-acre of farmland behind the restaurant where she grows vegetables that are featured on the Rye Tavern menu, and three more acres at her home to support the local food movement. She enjoys promoting farm-to-table fare and educating the community about where their food comes from and encourages everyone to “get to know your farmer!”

Judith Froman is motivated to make things happen, which she does with her uncanny ability to connect the dots, be it people or situations. It’s a good skill to have as the executive director of the Pinehills Landowners Association where she oversees the bylaws of the community, much like a town manager. But Froman expanded her role to be a facilitator of fun, creating a campus-like environment at the clubhouse where discussion groups and classes can gather. The programming is based on the interests and expertise of the residents of The Pinehills—all of whom Froman naturally connects.

Deborah Sedares is proof the world is a small place. She grew up in Worcester, graduated law school, worked as general counsel for the Worcester Redevelopment Authority, Providence and Worcester Railroad, and the Mass Turnpike Authority before joining land development company Pinehills, LLC in 2000. Earlier this year she was promoted to President, overseeing the master plan for the 3,243acre property. But there’s serendipity here: Her great uncle Arthur Lamb was the first professional fire chief of Plymouth. His safety plan included building a station on the undeveloped land where The Pinehills is located. And the town fire station that now operates at The Pinehills and protects the forest and countless homes, is dedicated to her uncle.

As a chef who loves cooking both the sweet and the savory, Jessica Childers is a bit of a unicorn in the kitchen. She’s constantly crossing barriers with her menus, incorporating molecular gastronomy and modern techniques meant to impress her guests, which she does consistently. As the Chef de Cuisine at Mirbeau, Childers designs original dishes for the restaurant, working with local purveyors procuring fresh ingredients, which feeds her creative passion for cooking. When she’s not at Mirbeau, she may be competing in charity-based cooking competitions, or focusing on her other love—spending time with her two horses.

Ruyi Feng is a people-pleaser. And she’s found her niche making people happy by introducing them to different kinds of cuisine. Originally from China, Feng lived in Japan for seven years, which is where she learned the art of sushi-making. She brought that craft with her to Boston when she moved here 30 years ago. Fourteen years ago, she was recruited to work at The Market at Pinehills. She was nervous, she admits, but the community embraced her, and she returned the kindness by serving Market customers authentic Chinese and Japanese dishes, made with love.

If you took a drink from the faucet today, you can thank Marisa PiconeDevine, who operates the drinking water services at The Pinehills. Her company, Sarian, is a certified woman business enterprise in a male-dominated industry, which she got involved in because she’s always been interested in water and public health. It’s an ever-changing industry as different contaminants and treatments emerge, as do regulations. But she’s a person who likes to learn both on the job and off. Every year she acquires a new skill. One year it was beekeeping. This year, she’s still considering. But one thing is for sure, The Pinehills water system is in excellent hands.

Women Who Rocked History

Plymouth author Nancy Rubin Stuart details the lives of strong women who challenged the norms of their days.

f it’s true that “Well-behaved women rarely make history,” then you might think that Nancy Rubin Stuart’s books are all about fractious females. They are not—at least not by modern standards. The Plymouth author writes about women who were bold, outspoken, independent and determined to succeed at a time when society said they shouldn’t. Stuart has made a career out of tracing the histories of these groundbreaking individuals, and by helping other writers find their voices in her role as the executive director of the Cape Cod Writers Center. From her home in The Pinehills, the busy author took a few moments to answer a few questions about why she likes to write about women who rebelled against the status quo.

You wrote a new book about Ben Franklin and the women in his life. What inspired you to do that?

While researching historical women, I learned about Franklin’s commonlaw marriage to Deborah Read. Ben’s autobiography claimed that Deborah was a wonderful helpmate. Yet Ben lived apart from her in London for many years—the first time for five years, the second time for a decade. Even when Deborah became

seriously ill, Ben did not return to see her before she died. Why? That question inspired me to write “Poor Richard’s Women.”

You’ve written several books about women in history. What fuels your passion?

I’m passionate about discovering the marginalized and often forgotten stories of women from the past. Women’s lives are woefully underrepresented in history, yet we were the “other half” of historical events. If we want to understand current attitudes towards women today, it’s important to understand how they were regarded in the past which is why I write about them.

How does living in Plymouth influence your writing?

Plymouth is an interesting town because of its historical roots, busy shoreline and lively shops, but it has relatively little to do with my writing—thus far anyway. I’ve been writing about historical women long before we moved here four years ago. What inspires me is the natural beauty around our home and the view of the garden just outside my office window.

What is your role at the Cape Cod Writers Center?

As executive director of the nationally acclaimed Cape Cod Writers Center, I have many duties: selection of faculty and design of courses for our year-round events and summer conference; publicity; promotion; website updates, budgetary issues and board meetings. We are committed to assisting published and aspiring writers of all genres, abilities and ages to develop their writing skills and learn the business of editing, publishing and promotion.

How did you get started in writing?

I began writing when I was 9 years old about our dog and my neighborhood friends. By the time I was in college I was writing for a literary magazine, mostly as a poet. Only later as a young married mother living in suburban New York did my first professional publications appear in local magazines and the Gannett newspapers.

Growing up, did you even imagine you would become an award-winning author?

Only fleetingly, but I thought that it was impossible.

If you could go back in time and could speak with one person, who would that be and what would you ask?

I would love to speak with Cleopatra (69-30 BCE), who ruled Egypt, spoke many languages, forged political alliances and had romantic relationships with Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony. I’m curious about how she governed her kingdom, her attitudes towards men and why she committed suicide.

Writing can be a lonely and challenging profession. What do you tell aspiring writers?

Anyone who has a burning desire to write should pursue that goal since it grows out of a creative impulse which needs to be fulfilled. Even so, aspiring writers should understand that it may take years to see their first publication. Despite rejections, it’s important to persist. When I first started writing, I used to correct rejection slips from major publications—so many that I used to joke about papering a room with them.

It is also important for writers to read constantly. Not only does that keep a writer well-informed about what is currently being published, but teaches him or her about different approaches to writing and literary styles.

Since very few authors make a living from their work, I suggest having a full- or part-time day job or other steady source of income. The challenge then becomes finding the time to write at night and on the weekends.

Finally, it is important to network with other writers by joining local or virtual writer groups or attending writers conferences. While writing is a solitary profession, having peers with whom to share literary issues and exchange ideas removes that sense of aloneness and sparks new creative ideas.

I wish aspiring writers persistence and good luck. It’s worth the investment of time and effort because nothing is as permanent as print!

THE BETH Kitchen & Bar

Hingham Shipyard reels in Boston’s Briar Group to debut its first South Shore restaurant.

When Hingham Beer Works shuttered in 2020, we were anxious to see what would take over the space at Hingham Shipyard. Thankfully, The Briar Group, the folks behind 13 successful Boston, Cambridge and Foxboro establishments, including City Table, Broken Records Beer Hall, Glass House, and Six String, came to the rescue to debut their first South Shore restaurant concept.

The Beth Kitchen & Bar is now anchored in the former microbrewery’s space overlooking Hingham Harbor. The restaurant’s name pays homage to the location’s former days operating as the Bethlehem Hingham Shipyard, one of the largest (and most successful) shipbuilding sites in the nation at the time. Nearly a century ago, the yard produced “an impressive 227 ships in only three years and employed over 15,000 builders... 2,500 of which were women,” according to their website.

Today, the coastal spot offers creative American fare with an international flair – think ginger-miso Maine Acadian redfish, Thai coconut curry lobster, jambalaya skillet, and mole steak frites. Whether you come here for a freshly made white sangria served up at the large driftwood bar, prefer to dine inside the entirely renovated space at one of the coveted blue banquettes or enjoy al fresco dining on the spacious patio, there are plenty of spots to soak in the gorgeous waterfront views.

The interior of the restaurant has been entirely renovated to offer a nautical vibe. The main dining room has been opened up and a U-shaped bar now offers an industrialchic flair. Rope string lights have been hung and floor-to-ceiling windows provide a panoramic view of the restaurant’s gorgeous waterfront location.

We recommend starting off with one of their signature cocktails, like the Spicy Mango Margarita, a kicked-up combination of Ghost Tequila, mango, house sour and fresh lime, or a Cucumber Basil Smash made with Crop Cucumber Organic Vodka, St. Germain Liqueur, lime, basil and muddled cucumber and strawberry.

The Beth offers quite an array of dishes designed for sharing. Popular starters range from tasty coconut curry PEI mussels, and juicy molasses-brined wings served with a side of Korean barbecue sauce, to an uber fresh spicy tuna roll, and addicting fennel sausage and spicy Calabrese honey flatbread.

83 www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

Be sure to try the tuna and salmon poke nachos - a beautiful (and delicious) presentation of freshly diced tuna and salmon with avocado, wakame and unagi sauce served atop crisp wonton chips drizzled with shiso aioli.

The generous portion of Local Burrata with fresh basil pesto, sliced sundried tomatoes and microgreens served with crostini is the perfect pick for larger groups. The New England clam chowder is made with a “secret family recipe,” while each of the salads here come with a surprising twist. For example, the Italian Caesar features crispy pancetta and fried capers while the Watermelon and Feta Salad includes fried olives, basil and mint.

The enormous “handheld” sandwiches include a halfpound juicy Back River Burger, pork belly Banh Mi and crispy Nashville Hot Chicken Sandy served on a soft bulky roll. For main events, try the pan-seared salmon served with a togarashi spiced rice cake, tomato-bacon chutney and fresh broccoli. Another standout was the tuna poke bowl filled with cucumber, mango, pickled red onion, wakame, sushi rice and wontons.

A visit here would be remiss without sampling one of their sweet finales. The creamy Key lime pie provided the perfect balance of sweet to tart served with a buttery graham cracker crust.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the launch of The Beth’s weekend brunch coming soon.

Simple autumn recipes prepared with Hippy Pilgrim’s artisanal garlic salts and seasonings burst with homegrown flavor.

Photography by KATE

When Susannah Sapir was a child, she learned an important lesson from working in her mother’s backyard vegetable garden and eating the delicious meals she created: Fresh food tastes great. This early introduction to gardening and cooking inspired the Plympton resident to follow her own culinary path and eventually led her to create her own farm-to-table garlic salt company, Hippy Pilgrim.

Sapir discovered the magic of garlic as a young adult, whipping up garlicky shrimp scampi and other meals in her college dorm room using only a hot plate and a microwave. Years later, she started making cooking videos that were aired on Plymouth Area Community Access Television. This experience led Sapir to receive an invitation to audition for the pilot season of the reality cooking show, “The Next Food Network Star,” in 2005. Sapir placed fourth in the competition and the experience launched her into a 15-year television career during which she appeared on numerous food shows.

87 www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

It was around this time that Sapir received a container of homemade garlic salt as a gift. She fell in love with the flavor and the convenience of the product, so she decided to try her hand at making batches of fresh garlic salt in her own kitchen. At the time, Sapir’s two sons were young, and she was always aiming to create tasty, fuss-free meals and adding a pinch of garlic salt to the vegetables on their plates was a “mommy win.”.

“Kosher salt, fresh garlic, and pepper make the perfect all-in-one pinch,” says Sapir, who began preparing larger batches of garlic salt to give as holiday gifts. Inspired by the rave reviews from her family and friends, Sapir took a leap of faith to launch her own garlic salt business in 2013. Hippy Pilgrim now offers a range of 14 garlic salt blends, including Sapir’s original recipe. Favorites include the Thanksgiving Garlic Salt, which is infused with Rosemary, Sage, Marjoram and Thyme, a Pinot Noir Garlic Salt made with wine from Artis Winery in Pembroke, and a knock-your-socks-off Hippy Pilgrim Coffee Rub made with locally sourced and roasted coffee.

Sapir has always made her products using fresh ingredients from local farms whenever possible, but during the pandemic she found herself struggling to source enough local garlic to meet demands. To save her business, she rolled up her sleeves and planted her own garlic. Sapir enlisted the help of a garden design expert who helped her design the garlic field and herb gardens on her Plympton property.

This summer, Sapir harvested her first crop of 1,400 garlic plants, as well as a variety of herbs, horseradish, jalapenos and other produce. Sapir dries the garlic in barns rented from local farmers and prepares each batch of Hippy Pilgrim garlic salts and seasonings in a professional kitchen at her home. Surplus produce is sold at her farm stand or donated to local food pantries and she offers a free pick-your-own herb garden to locals.

People come from miles away to shop at the Hippy Pilgrim products roadside farm stand. Sapir also sells her products at farmers markets across the South Shore and on the Hippy Pilgrim website. She continues to make cooking videos in her own home kitchen, too (social media savvy folks can follow her on TikTok).

In many ways, Sapir’s life has come full circle. She enjoys educating her customers about the value of cooking with fresh local ingredients and sharing simple recipes that feature her delicious seasoning blends. Sapir includes a hand-written note with each Hippy Pilgrim order, thanking the customer for their purchase.

Inside the Hippy Pilgrim farm stand, a cloth drawstring gift bag for sale on the Hippy Pilgrim website has a printed quote from French chef and writer Marcel Boulestin.

“Peace and happiness begin, geographically, where garlic is used in cooking.”

Sapir has certainly found this sentiment to be true, and she hopes her garlic salts bring a little joy to her customers, one flavorful meal at a time.

2 teaspoons of Hippy Pilgrim Pumpkin Spice Vanilla Sugar, divided

1/2 teaspoon of Hippy Pilgrim Thanksgiving Garlic Salt

Air fryer

Combine squash, oil, garlic salt and 1 teaspoon of the vanilla sugar in a bowl and toss to coat evenly. Air fry at 400 degrees until browned (912 minutes) and sprinkle the remaining teaspoon of vanilla sugar. Serve atop your salad as faux croutons.

TIP: Assemble salad while the croutons are cooking.

CRANBERRY VINAIGRETTE INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup of oil of your choice

1/4 cup of whole berry cranberry sauce

3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

1 small clove of grated garlic

1 teaspoon of Hippy Pilgrim Rosemary Garlic Salt

1 teaspoon of Hippy Pilgrim Garlic Herb Salt Free Seasoning

This is a tangy and versatile vinaigrette. I like to make it in a mason jar and just shake it up quickly. This is also great drizzled on warm pork or poultry, green beans or grain and bean salads. Simply add all of the ingredients to a mason jar and shake well. This recipe can be doubled or tripled easily.

SUSANNAH SAPIR’S SIMPLE FALL RECIPES

Hippy Pilgrim’s Butternut Squash Ravioli

This recipe couldn’t be easier and the results can make meals all week!

ROASTED SQUASH INGREDIENTS

1 small butternut squash

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1 tablespoon of Hippy Pilgrim Pumpkin Spice Vanilla Sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons of Hippy Pilgrim Thanksgiving Garlic Salt

RAVIOLI INGREDIENTS

1 cup of mashed roasted butternut squash

1/2 cup of ricotta cheese

1 egg yolk (reserve the egg white in a small bowl for sealing the raviolis)

Hippy Pilgrim Thanksgiving Garlic Salt

2 tablespoons Hippy Pilgrim Dipping Oil Starter Base

Wonton wrappers (smaller square shaped ones)

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Fill a small roasting pan halfway with water.

Split the squash down the middle and remove the seeds.

Place the squash (flesh side up) in the water. Brush the flesh of the squash with olive oil and sprinkle with Pumpkin Spice Vanilla Sugar and Hippy Pilgrim Thanksgiving Garlic Salt. Roast at 350 degrees for 60 to 90 minutes until soft and tender.

While the squash is roasting, begin preparing the sauce by melting the butter in a pan. Skim off the foam and add the sugar, spices, orange zest and garlic. Heat for one minute and set aside.

To make the ravioli filling, combine butternut squash and Dipping Oil Starter Base and mix well. Fill the center of each wonton wrapper with 1 teaspoon of filling. Do not overfill. Use the reserved egg white to coat the edges of the wrapper and fold the wonton in half to form a triangle. Press the tines of a fork into the edges to seal the two sides.

Boil wontons for 1 to 3 minutes in salted water and remove with a strainer or slotted spoon and place on a plate. Drizzle with a little butter sauce and top with a sprinkle of Pumpkin Spice Vanilla Sugar, a sprinkle of the Dipping Oil Starter Base and a tiny sprinkle of Thanksgiving Garlic Salt. Optional garnishes include grated orange zest, fresh pomegranate seeds and toasted pine nuts or walnuts for some crunch.

You can make the raviolis in advance and freeze them on a cookie sheet. Once frozen, place in Ziploc Bags and boil them up whenever you’re in the mood!

SAUCE INGREDIENTS

1 stick of unsalted butter

A dash Hippy Pilgrim Pumpkin Spice Vanilla Sugar

1/2 teaspoon Hippy Pilgrim Garlic Herb Salt-Free Seasoning

1/2 teaspoon Hippy Pilgrim Thanksgiving Garlic Salt

Grated orange zest

Small clove of grated garlic

Pomegranate seeds for garnish

BREAK ROCK BREWING

breakrockbrewing.com

Break Rock Brewing opened to the public on March 3, 2022, becoming Quincy’s only craft brewery and taproom, and one of only a handful of oceanfront breweries in Massachusetts. With accordion windows, a glass storefront and a patio, the brewery has stunning views of the water and surrounding area. People enjoy the location, the beers and seltzers. The taproom is always active with special events, pop-up vendors, live music, and more. They have some great events planned for the fall and winter and are excited to ramp up the Community Cornerstones initiative that provides the space for free to registered nonprofits in an effort to utilize the taproom as a force for positive change and good works.

The South Shore’s craft beer scene is continuing to expand. Here’s the buzz you need to know.

UNTOLD BREWING

Untoldbrewing.com

There’s A LOT going on in the world of Untold. Most notably, they’re opening a second location with a brewery, taproom and restaurant at Derby Street Shops in Hingham. The new 2,400-square-foot space will feature a casually elegant taproom with 12 tap lines, plus an exciting menu of fresh, scratch-made dishes prepared by the award-winning culinary team at Clandestine Kitchen. In addition to enjoying BOSS winning beer and food on site, guests will be able to grab-and-go four-packs of beer and CK’s popular menu items. Construction is currently under way and they’re targeting a mid-fall opening. This will be a first-of-its-kind experience in the South Shore brewery scene.

BREWERY 44

brewery44.com

While Brewery 44 in Carver was established in 2020, they officially opened their taproom doors on Memorial Day of 2021 and have been going strong ever since. The beer garden and food trucks at the new location have been a huge hit on Fridays and Saturdays and guests can enjoy the “Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day” celebration on Sept. 16 and 17, which will include Irish food, music and more! The team has also been busy hosting fundraisers for local charities, and now offer their event space for rent. So look no further for a place to host that special gathering.

SPLIT ROCK BEER GARDEN

Opening Soon!

splitrockcohasset.com

Split Rock is an outdoor seasonal raw bar and beer garden located in the heart of downtown Cohasset. Their new, custom container bar, which will include three restrooms, a 14-draft beer wall, and a full raw bar setup, has been hit with supply chain delays. But they’ve moved forward to get the lot ready and say it’s coming along well. They’re looking to be serving customers this fall season (did someone say Oktoberfest?) and will have some limited hours during the holidays this year. A full season is expected next year starting mid-April.

DIRTY WATER DISTILLERY

dirtywaterdistillery.com

A new location is in the works for Dirty Water Distillery (along with its sister project, Llama Nama Beer Labs), which closed its original taproom on July 10 and immediately began moving equipment to a Cordage Park location in North Plymouth. The team will be working on the build of their new production and taproom space for as long as it takes. While they can’t currently estimate an opening date, they’re very excited to share that their new distillery/brewery will include a parking lot, a larger seating capacity (including outdoor space), a larger bar, and hopefully even some local touches to keep the historic Cordage Company theme intact. Stay tuned!

MAYFLOWER BREWING COMPANY

mayflowerbrewing.com

Sundays are beer garden days at The Pinehills in Plymouth. Families can come to relax in the Village Green and enjoy beer, wine, live music, local artisans, and award-winning chef Stephen Coe’s famed Lobsta Love Food Truck will be there every week. The beer garden will run through October 9 from 12-6 p.m.

ARTICLE FIFTEEN

articlefifteenbrewing.com

Things are moving along nicely at Article Fifteen’s new location at 406 VFW Drive, in Rockland. The 6,800-squarefoot taproom is a huge expansion from the previous building. The live music stage has been busy and the team continues to book great up-and-coming acts each week. Come in and enjoy live music on Fridays and Saturdays. The newly added arcade games, basketball, and skeeball have been a big hit as well, for families who bring the kids, and for big kids, too!

The team is planning to host indoor cornhole tournaments in the near future, as well. Lots to be excited about, for sure.

BROCKTON BEER COMPANY

brocktonbeer.com

In June, Brockton Beer Company opened a new taproom at 121 Main Street, Brockton. Founded by a group of friends who became close through weekly Friday game nights, the group started partnering with other Massachusetts breweries early on and quickly established a brand and local following. Thanks to its onsite kitchen, Brockton Beer Company is heating up the Brockton food and drink scene. Signature brews include Frederick and Main (a light lager) and Ticket to Vibe (a New England-style IPA). Both are currently in distribution throughout the South Shore, Cape and Islands, and Western Massachusetts at stores and select restaurants.

AUTHOR TALK - REBELS AT SEA: PRIVATEERING IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The James Library presents author Eric Jay Dolin for a talk about his book “Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution.” This heroic story of the founding of the U.S. Navy during the Revolution has been told before, yet missing from most maritime histories of America’s first war is the ragtag fleet of private vessels, from 20-foot whaleboats to 40-cannon men-of-war, that truly revealed the new nation’s character―above all, its ambition and entrepreneurial ethos. Dolin corrects that significant omission and contends that privateers, though often seen as profiteers at best and pirates at worst, were in fact critical to the revolution’s outcome. 7 p.m. Tickets: $20/$10 Seniors. 24 West St., Norwell, 781-659-7100, jameslibrary.org.

AMERICA’S HOMETOWN THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION

This year’s Thanksgiving Celebration will be bigger and better than ever! The parade alone is ranked the #1 Thanksgiving parade in the nation. Plans for 2022 are currently in the works, so check back often at usathanksgiving.com.

2 cups firmly packed basil leaves

¾ cup olive oil

Zest and juice from small lemon

½ cup toasted pine nuts

¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan

3 cloves garlic

2 teaspoons Hippy Pilgrim Basil Garlic Salt

Add all of the ingredients to a blender and process until smooth. Makes about 1 1/3 cups of pesto.

Hippy Pilgrim

Lemony Basil Pesto

Shop Online: hippypilgrim.com

Toss with pasta, drizzle on pizza, mix with mayo or butter to make flavored condiments, add to cream to make a basil cream sauce for lasagna, garnish a caprese salad with it, toss with fresh zucchini and grill…pesto is so versatile it can be used on everything from chicken to seafood! If you cannot find pine nuts or find them too costly, substitute walnuts or pistachios for an equally delicious result. If you do not consume dairy substitute vegan parmesan, a TB of nutritional yeast, cashews or just omit the cheese altogether. It will still be delicious.

Resourceful Tip: After pouring the pesto into a storage container a lot of pesto sticks to the inside of the blender container. I hate to see things go to waste so I add milk or cream to the blender and process it. The result is pesto cream which I like to use as a base for cream sauces to add extra flavor with zero work. 32

Mark Grandmont has been passionate about photography for as long as he can remember. “I have a memory of my parents giving me a Polaroid SX-70 camera for Christmas when I was a young boy,” says Grandmont. “Although it hasn’t been used in decades, I still own that camera to this day.”

Once a side hobby, photography is now Grandmont’s fulltime gig. He specializes in capturing dynamic images of coastal landscapes across New England (one of his favorite subjects to shoot are lighthouses), as well as real estate, architecture, automotive, marine photography and occasionally weddings. When shooting landscapes, Grandmont often spends a good deal of time planning out his images, sometimes picking out a particular lighthouse or nautical spot months or even years in advance. Some of his images, however, are more serendipitous in nature. Such was the case with his photo of vibrant fall foliage by the railroad tracks, which he captured in his hometown of historic Taunton in early November of last year.

“I try to go for walks as often as I can anxd on this particular day I noticed that the color was really hanging on,” says Grandmont. “I didn’t have my camera at the time, so I forced myself to head back out after I got home and grabbed my camera.” To view more examples of Grandmont’s scenic landscape photography, check out his Instagram @mpathimagery_photography or website mpathimagery.net.
