Executive Board

Aminta Kilawan-Narine, Founder & Director SHE/HER/HERS Aminta Kilawan-Narine is a lawyer, community organizer, and social justice activist. Aminta has lived in South Queens for almost 30 years, in both Ozone Park and South Ozone Park. She is the cofounder of Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus, a non-profit organization merging the values at the heart of social justice with those at the heart of Hinduism. Through Sadhana, Aminta led monthly beach cleanups at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to promote eco-friendly worship, and facilitated conversations on gender equity and domestic violence with youth and faith-based institutions. She has organized immigration know your rights forums in her local Queens community, and been a prominent voice for interfaith activism. In efforts to promote civic engagement, Aminta became a weekly columnist for the West Indian newspaper in 2015 and is also a contributing writer for Brown Girl Magazine.

A survivor of teen dating abuse whose activism is informed by her lived experience, Aminta often writes on issues related to gender justice. Aminta and her work have been featured in many media outlets, both largescale and local, such as the New York Times, the Huffington Post, NY1 (Spectrum News), amNY, Colorlines, the New York Law Journal, and CBS. Aminta has a B.A. in Political Science from Fordham University and a Juris Doctor degree from Fordham Law School. Professionally, Aminta works as a Legislative Attorney at the New York City Council, drafting and negotiating laws and policies ranging from women's rights, to homelessness/housing, to access to public benefits and child welfare. Aminta is licensed to practice law in NYS. Aminta loves singing Hindu devotional music and Bollywood film songs and playing Scrabble with her husband, fellow community organizer Rohan Narine. They currently live in Howard Beach, Queens.

WHAT SQWM TAUGHT HER When I’m not working or spending time with my partner, SQWM is my life. I live and breathe this organization in all that I do. Through SQWM I have learned so much more about myself and what I really want to see in the world. I’ve been able to funnel all the knowledge I’ve learned over the last 10+ years being a community organizer into the very purpose that I’ve been seeking to promote as a survivor myself: gender equity. I’ve watched visionary leaders emerge ready to join our movement – all who hail from South Queens, all who have a shared vision and lead with the compassion and ferocity that this world thirsts for.

Candace Prince-Modeste, Founding Board Member

SHE/HER/HERS ABOUT CANDACE Candace Prince-Modeste is award-winning, astute public affairs professional, who has leveraged her assertive and personable nature to make a positive and lasting contribution to numerous government and non-profit institutions for nearly 15 years. This includes leading policy, budget, and constituent services operations for a veteran City Council Member for over five years, and administering multi-million-dollar federal grant programs for six years. Candace currently runs Modeste Business Solutions, LLC, a technical and administrative support services company she founded in 2013. Her services include digital content management, administrative support, and grant writing, and are particularly geared towards improving the capacity of small not-forprofits in her community. She currently devotes her time to growing her business and supporting local organizations.

CANDACE'S SQWM STORY “I realized that I had never worked on gender issues previously, despite my strong advocacy for issues like wage parity and health equity. This is a learning experience, but also an opportunity to normalize discussions on gender issues amongst communities like mine who have generally shied away from it. I, like everyone else, have had to adjust to operating in a mostly remote world.

COVID-19 has also exposed some technical deficiencies that I never knew I had, so I am encouraged to strengthen my technical skills in order to best serve my community and improve my professional skill set."

WHAT SQWM TAUGHT HER Since joining, Candace’s eyes have been opened to all of the ways in which gender issues touch every facet of our lives. Fatima Shabbir, Founding Board Member SHE/HER/HERS ABOUT FATIMA

Fatima Shabbir is a community artist and founder of @browngirlrevolt, a space that celebrates the Indo-Caribbean experience from the point of view of an unapologetic, first-generation American woman. She is obsessed with issues surrounding race, gender and social justice, and historical legacies of colonialism, of which she is a product. She believes in creating art that is accessible to all as a means to personal and collective healing. When she isn't resisting white supremacist and patriarchal systems, she is either plotting new ways to dismantle power structures that seek to oppress or hanging out with her four children.

Harmehar Kaur Kohli, Founding Board Member

SHE/HER ABOUT HARMEHAR (MEHAR) Harmehar Kaur Kohli is currently a medical student at Stony Brook Renaissance School of Medicine. She graduated from New York University in 2019 with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Dramatic Literature and Chemistry. Mehar was born in Punjab, India. Her family immigrated to Richmond Hill, Queens when she was 4 and she has called it home ever since. Since Harmehar was young, she has been a vocal activist with a passion for women’s rights and social justice. In 2017, she founded Kaurageous Love (KL), a 501(c)(3) organization focused on creating dynamic and powerful womxn leaders in Punjabi Queens communities. KL aims to engage young women to empower each other through enrichment programs, philanthropy, and community-based events that serve to inspire individuals while elevating group consciousness.

She is also the president of the Stony Brook chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a national organization that provides education, support, and resources to those affected by mental illness. In her free time, Harmehar enjoys singing, playing the ukulele, and acting in plays for pediatric patients.

MEHAR'S SQWM STORY "SQWM fills a gap in this community that we have all been yearning for so long. So many separate organizations work in Queens, restricted to their respective cultural and religionspecific audiences. When we first began to cultivate SQWM, I saw it as a beacon of unity and shared goals in this neighborhood. It meant bringing together folks of all different races, ethnicities, and languages towards the common goal of equity and justice."

IN PANDEMIC TIMES Harmehar felt she was extremely blessed during this pandemic and an immense amount of privilege kept her family and herself safe. She was able to go on with her medical education virtually, and her family was able to all go remote for their respective jobs. COVID-19 really devastated her community and the pandemic really impacted the way she looked at service and duty. She feels so blessed to have been able to give back to her neighborhood during these times and provide even the smallest relief.

WHAT SQWM TAUGHT HER SQWM has irreversibly changed her life for the better and helped her blossom many wonderful relationships. She feels so lucky to be a part of a Board with outstanding, passionate womxn that have become extended family as we saw a small vision become a whirlwind of influence. And equally blessed to be in a membership of womxn that are so dedicated to service. What began as a march on the streets has become so, so much more for our community, and she can't wait to see it grow and adapt to the needs at hand.

Nirmala Singh, Founding Board Member

SHE/HER Nirmala Singh currently works as a National Service Program Coordinator for NYC Service, Office of the Mayor. As a graduate of Mount Saint Mary College, her deep interest in Gender Equity and Education Policies led her to major in History and Political Science with a minor in Sociology.

Most of her undergraduate career has been focused on government agencies, primarily the New York State Assembly and the United States House of Representatives as well as numerous nonprofits and volunteer organizations. Upon graduating, Nirmala completed a year of National Service at the New York Immigration Coalition where she had the opportunity to work on programs and services that were necessary for the Immigrant communities, especially immigrant women in NYC. Assisting those who feel voiceless within society has been her passion both in the United States and in Guyana where she is originally from. She hopes one day to contribute to the change of bridging the gaps between gender and education inequality.

Nirmala Singh, continued...

NIRMALA'S SQWM STORY At five years old, Nirmala received a call from her Aaji at 4:00am notifying her that her puwah was murdered by her current partner. This was one of Nirmala’s first exposures to Gender-Based Violence, feeling completely helpless at young age having to watch loved ones and our community mourn this loss. Almost twenty years later as sheI sat on her bed and read the articles about the murder of Donna Rehana Dojoy, one of our sisters and resident of South Ozone Park, Nirmala went back to her thoughts at five years old and asked herself when does this cycle end?

After connecting with Aminta and mourning this loss together, the idea of SQWM was founded. This organization created the space abd community we were all yearning for. While our original intent was a women’s March in South Queens with resource sharing, we have become a organization on the frontlines fighting for our communities, through monthly pop-up food pantries, health relationship workshops and so much more. While our goal of a March and Sharing resources has never changed, our methods to reaching our community has shifted, we now lead for community by community.

IN PANDEMIC TIMES COVID-19 shifted Nirmala’s life as she witnessed her immediate family working on the frontlines against COVID-19, seeing relative and friends suffer from this disease and firsthand noticing the gaps and inequities faced by our black and brown communities. SQWM allowed Nirmala to show up fully for her community in the many ways they needed, from combating food insecurity to providing mental health resources and more.

WHAT SQWM TAUGHT HER SQWM has become a pillar in Nirmala's life. There are many ways SQWM has changed her life. She was given a platform to organize and build community power from within, centering the members we serve and leading through their lens. Nirmala feels grateful to be part of this movement and is excited to continue building, advocating and organizing for our South Queens Community alongside her sisters in service.

Tannuja Devi Rozario, Founding Board Member SHE/HER/THEY/THEM ABOUT TANNUJA Tannuja Rozario has a Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology and earned her Advanced Certificate in Feminist Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

During the spring and fall semesters, she is an instructor on reproductive justice and gender justice through various courses at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Currently, she is working on her dissertation with a focus on the transnational processes of reproductive journeys of IndoCaribbean folks. Her work is funded by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and Research Enhancement and Leadership Fellowship. Her fight for gender injustice is also shown through her work in the Activists Educators Collective at the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault and the Director of Research for the Center for Progressive Security where she conducts research initiatives on gender-based violence by integrating feminist epistemologies and methodologies and intersectional frameworks.

Tannuja’s passion for advocacy and the research of inequalities across different systems of oppression on a national and global level stems from her personal background as an Indo-Caribbean immigrant.

At a young age, Tannuja witnessed the impact of gender violence firsthand in Guyana where women’s bodies became a battleground for political, economic, and social issues. Such realizations have guided her work and advocacy, and she continues to thrive in roles that allow her to work towards dismantling the gender norms that maintain systems of power and prevent marginalized groups from being leaders to effect change.

TANNUJA'S SQWM STORY

IN PANDEMIC TIMES

Tannuja joined SQWM because she was so tired

COVID-19 really shifted Tannuja’s life as she witnessed

Afeza Rozario

SHE/HER Afeza Rozario resides in Ozone Park, Queens NY. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters of Public Administration with a specialization in Human Resources. She enjoys exploring new places and connecting with new people. She currently works at CUNY CityTech in enrollment management. Her role is to educate and develop culturally diverse undergraduate students to cross the finish line and be sustainable after graduation and beyond.

AFEZA'S SQWM STORY She was inspired to join SQWM to reach vulnerable and marginalized members of her community. SQWM enables her to give back and help provide access to vital resources such as mentorship opportunities, promote harm reduction by the distribution of safe sex products, PPE, and conducting a needs assessment to bridge the gap and address inequity.

WHAT SQWM TAUGHT HER SQWM made it possible for her to meet so many like-minded, resilient and empowered women with a vested interest to uplift and provide service to disadvantaged folks in my community. Afeza is grateful she gets to share this space and contribute to this movement with such versatile, inclusive, strong, and impactful women!

Amanda Deebrah

SHE/HER/HERS Amanda Deebrah grew up and still lives in South Richmond Hill. She went to Queens College (Flushing, Queens) for a year as a finance major. In Accounting 2, she realized that finance was not a topic she was passionate about, so she transferred to the New York City College of Technology (City Tech) as a career and technology teacher education major. Amanda graduated summa cum laude from City Tech in Spring 2018 with her Bachelor of Science in Education. She enrolled in the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in Spring 2019 for her master's degree in Instructional Technology and graduated summa cum laude the next year with her Master of Science. Amanda is a teacher and absolutely loves her job. Her students make her look forward to coming to work every day. No two days are ever the same and seeing her students grow as people make her feel accomplished. Amanda’s passion is making the world a better place. In whatever way possible, she is always trying to give back. Her favorite hobby is watching television, especially sit-coms!

AMANDA'S SQWM STORY Amanda was inspired to join SQWM to give back to her community. For years, she has wanted to join a group that does community service in her area, but there wasn't any available. A few months before joining, she followed the work that SQWM does and knew that they fit into her life's work of making the world (starting with her community first) a better place.

IN PANDEMIC TIMES COVID-19 impacted Amanda’s life by exposing the inequality in the world, particularly in her community. Amanda always feels very blessed to have food, clothing, and shelter, especially during this time, and she wants to give back to those who don't have as much.

WHAT SQWM TAUGHT HER “SQWM has provided me with numerous opportunities to serve my community and has subsequently opened a path for me to help others, especially in my area. I appreciate SQWM for being open to ideas and allowing us to run with them. For example, I initially told our director that a video capturing our experiences in regards to the virus would be a good idea to address the high COVID-19 rates in the Richmond Hill/South Ozone Park area. With strong support from the members and their families, we released the PSA in less than a week. The work I do for SQWM has also provided me with personal benefits, such as family bonding time. My parents and I often bag off masks and menstrual items for pantries. This activism, through SQWM, has given me the confidence to know that I can make a change in the community and the world.”

Amanda Sancler

SHE/HER/HERS Amanda Sancler has a BS in Business Management and Administration and is a certified paralegal and notary. She is fluent in English/Spanish. Amanda is from Richmond Hill. Her hobbies include volunteering, marathons, obstacle racing, dancing, baking, dancing.

AMANDA'S SQWM STORY Amanda is involved in several organizations. She loves volunteering and always looking for ways to be a voice and give back to her community.

PANDEMIC TIMES Amanda has been laid off, gained some weight, and got anxiety from worrying about her mom not getting the virus and a host of other things.

WHAT SQWM TAUGHT HER Amanda really hopes that she can be a partner, team member, or mentor in any capacity and that as a group, we can accomplish positive outcomes towards abuse of women and children, healthy lifestyle in all ages, mental health, etc.

Amelia Inderjeit Amelia Inderjeit

SHE/HER/HERS Amelia was proudly born and raised in Jamaica, Queens. As a first-generation student, she graduated early with her Bachelor’s in 2017 and finished her Master's in 2020—the first of her family. Amelia is an Indo-Caribbean daughter, educator, activist, student, writer, poet, painter, baker, and anything else she manages to accomplish. Her passions stem from a love of community, family, and creating a space of refuge for those in need. Through everything she does, Amelia strives to help those around her and to practice kindness, because, as she says, "We never know what someone is experiencing." Her freespirit floats from having conversations about literature, and debating whether Vasari hid the Lost Leonardo, to knowing every lyric of every Drake song. You will find Amelia advocating for human rights causes, youth development, and her students. As she continues her higher-education journey, Amelia proudly supports our gender-based domestic violence committee, while encouraging creativity through our arts committee.

AMELIA'S SQWM STORY Amelia joined SQWM, after getting involved with two mutual aid groups in NYC, where a majority of her students live. She felt, while supporting other areas of the city where her students live, she had to support her own as well. From filling out a Google Form to join SQWM to attending the first meeting and felt right at home—Amelia hopes the organization would be one she could flourish with. Between strong leadership, colleagues, and a team with endless inspiration, Amelia has been a member since. As SQWM continues to grow, the team, and our community, continue to inspire her to do more.

“SQWM has become a part of my existence! The executive board continues to encourage and support me, allowing me to take the lead whenever I can, reminding me of the light I spread (as said by Aminta, not me)! Our team continues to inspire me to be and do better for the beauty of our community. Since joining SQWM, I have a better sense of community and belonging. SQWM has fostered endless aspirations on how we can support those around us, to the best of our abilities.”

PANDEMIC TIMES In March of 2020, as a first-year educator, Amelia said “See you all Monday,” to her students—only to never see them again. The pandemic has broken so many people, systems, and families, and Amelia is no exception. The one positive, she has to admit, about COVID-19, is that it’s one of the reasons she decided to get involved with SQWM.

Angelica Razack-Francis SHE/HER/HERS Angelica Razack-Francis is originally from Long Island, but now happily lives in Harlem. She graduated from CUNY Law School in 2020 and is currently working in the legal field on immigration defense. Outside of law and advocacy, she enjoys drawing and cooking.

Angelica recently rediscovered her passion for poetry and writing. Although she does not live in Queens, she has a special connection to Queens as an American Indo-Guyanese woman. Growing up, Liberty Avenue is one of the places that made her feel connected to her community and Guyanese-American culture. It is the only place that she can get her Patsy’s Channa, Guyana bread, cheese roll, and Tunnocks Caramel bars.

Anjali Seegobin

SHE/HER Anjali Seegobin was born in Richmond Hill, Queens, and currently attends the City College of New York, where she is majoring in Political Science and Anthropology with hopes of pursuing a career in law.

She has a special place in her heart for poetry books and is hoping to convince her parents into adopting a dog one day.

South Queens is a community severely lacking in its resources for women, and SQWM became a backbone to help others. Annessa Lall

SHE/HER/HERS Annessa Lall was born in Guyana and migrated with her family at the age of two. She resides in South Ozone Park, Queens. Annessa graduated from John Jay College in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and a minor in history.

In 2017, she completed an advanced certificate in criminal investigation. Recently, Annessa graduated with a Masters of Professional Studies in homeland security and criminal justice leadership from St. John’s University. Her first job was at the age of sixteen, where she was an assistant at an insurance brokerage. She progressed to being a legal administrative assistant at a personal injury firm. She is currently a paralegal for the New York City Law Department. Her passions include baking/cooking, dancing, writing poetry, fashion, traveling, and crafting. She is always up for an adventure!

ANNESSA'S SQWM STORY The communities within Southeast Queens are often neglected. Despite the various community leaders advocating for change, Annessa personally did not see any. Annessa was introduced to SQWM through Tannuja. Her social media reflected the impact of the organization and their amazing efforts. Annessa took the chance and signed up to be a member and has not regretted it since! She is extremely proud to serve her community!

SQWM is a positive influence in her life. Annessa feels it is quite an honor to be surrounded by powerful and influential individuals. She has learned and grown exponentially as a person.

Daily, she finds herself breaking out of her shell by staying true to her power and motivating others to do so as well.

Anusuya Singh

SHE/HER/HERS Anusuya has spent 22 years on earth befriending aunties that know more about people than Wikipedia. She was raised in South Richmond Hill and knows almost every street like the back of her hand. Her friends would often describe her as rambunctious, humorous, and friendly. Anusuya graduated CUNY Hunter College in Spring 2020 with a BS in Public Health and if her mom asks, she does plan on going to grad school soon. She loves reading, especially when it comes to activism theory, human love, and Agatha Christie. She also loves journaling and keep separate journals for different topics. In her free time, Anusuya enjoys poorly recreating DIY recipes and playing Animal Crossing.

She spent the last 3 years working in non-profit and it's an industry that fits her perfectly because it allows her to do two of her favorite things: support historically underprivileged populations and get a direct deposit. She is also heavily passionate about intertwining faith with activism. Anusuya believes that a community is the strongest asset an individual can find and wants to build and support her local community as best as she can. "Overall, I'm just a gyal that you can spot on Liberty Avenue buying kulfi and pine tarts!," said Anusuya.

ANUSUYAH'S SQWM STORY Growing up in South Queens, it was obvious that there were issues that needed to be addressed.

These issues have spanned generations but there was a sense of powerlessness to face them. Seeing SQWM come together and say that enough was enough lit a fire in Anusuyah. She wanted to be a part of the movement as well to restore her community and ensure that the quality of happiness in South Queens can be increased exponentially. "Too many times, activism in our community is led by men," said Anusuya. It made her feel intimidated and unheard. Seeing women leading and taking charge was a deep inspiration for her and she wanted to embody the same qualities like them. Anusuya wanted to be in the company of other women who shared the same passions and ideals that she does.

She's constantly craved having solid and meaningful bonds with other female-identifying individuals but also felt nervous and hesitant about doing the work to create them. SQWM gave her space and tools to be as bold and confident as I've always dreamed of, and in turn, she was able to meet some amazing folks to build those bonds that she's always dreamed of. "SQWM allowed me to explore advocacy work and empower not just myself but also my community. I no longer feels like I have to sit back and wait for someone else to take charge and lead. I have the power and an army of women supporting me every step of the way.

IN PANDEMIC TIMES "COVID-19 put an abrupt stop to my college experience. I spent my last semester online and even had an online graduation. I also lost my grandfather during the pandemic and was unable to be by his side during his final moments. I experienced grief, hopelessness, and helplessness. And when you're down, the only way to go is up. So I started looking outwards. I knew there were folks who were suffering like I was and many who were enduring far more and I wanted to reach out and connect with them. COVID-19 gave me the final push to commit myself to giving back to the community that raised me and made me into who I am." - Anusuya

Ati Bazin

SHE/HER/HERS Ati was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to parents who emigrated from Montenegro. She lives in Forest Hills, N.Y. After some time managing a research lab, Ati earned her Masters in Biology Education at the Hunter College School of Education. She spent a couple of years teaching either Biology or Physics, before having her two children. Currently, Ati is a stay-at-home mom and engages with her community through equity advocacy.

Catherine Vozikis

SHE/HERS Catherine Vozikis has been a proud member of SQWM since July 2020. She is passionate about social change and sees it as her life mission to leave her city better than she found it. As an AmeriCorps alum and graduate of NYU’s Silver School of Social work, she currently works as an attendance and mentorship coordinator to reduce chronic absenteeism at a public middle school in Astoria. Outside the education space, Catherine is also passionate about women’s empowerment, civic education, environmental sustainability, and fashion! When she’s not working or volunteering, you can catch Catherine on her yoga mat, at a tennis court, or perusing second-hand clothes at a thrift shop (or on the Depop app). CATHERINE'S SQWM STORY “I joined SQWM after seeing an Instagram post about a pantry event in South Ozone Park, which is right next to my neighborhood of Howard Beach. I loved that there was a community effort happening right in my backyard, which was new and exciting. I signed up to help and suddenly found myself amongst other amazing volunteers, not only dedicated to addressing food insecurity in the area, but also gender injustice in all its forms. Instantly, I knew SQWM was a movement I knew I could get behind.”

Joining SQWM has reinforced Catherine's passion for advocacy and social impact, as well as her sense of purpose. “Especially during the pandemic, where it is easy to get discouraged and even a little lonely, I found myself amongst a beautiful community within the SQWM membership, made up of intelligent and caring individuals who continue to share ideas and resources to help our neighbors as well as each other. I’ve even found a handful of amazing new friends too. Becoming a SQWM member has had a very positive influence on my life, and for that I am very grateful.” - Catherine

IN PANDEMIC TIMES As a public school employee, COVID-19 has heavily impacted Catherine’s work. Her job duties changed periodically to support the transition to remote learning. Social distancing also posed a challenge to the nature of her work as a whole, which is heavily centered on family and student engagement, which is often strengthened by relationship building done in person.

Because of COVID, Catherine has been working remotely and staying indoors a lot. It hasn’t been easy, but she feels lucky to have her family at home to spend more quality time with.

Christina Motilall

SHE/HER/HERS Christina Motilall is an MD candidate at the American University of Antigua COM. She received a BA from CUNY Queens College in PreProfessional Anthropology with a focus on the evolution of the disease. Currently, she is on the Community Grant committee for the American Women’s Hospital Services. Prior to this she held the position of Branch President for the American Women’s Medical Association at AUACOM, and then as student advisor thereafter.

In addition, Christina is an AMSA Leadership and Advocacy Scholar Candidate. She enjoys reading, writing (when time allows), fitness, and holistic wellness.

Born and raised in Woodside, Queens to a single immigrant mother, Christina always thought beyond what she saw in front of her and has always been motivated to do more, be more, and give back.

CHRISTINA'S SQWM STORY “I’ve always had many ideas and passion projects that I’ve wanted to execute. However, I felt like I did not have enough time, resources, or people on board to bring my projects to life.

Sitting in my room studying and scrolling through Instagram, I came across the SQWM page and immediately followed them. I spent months watching these women carry out and fulfill events and ideas that I also had in mind. They all shared a great amount of enthusiasm and determination to make a difference in their community. I soon got the opportunity to join in on their efforts and have been very grateful to share in the mission.”

Christina is a fairly new member, but since joining she felt as though she has found a place that she feels she belongs to. “I’m in a group of like-minded women who share the same vision, drive, and goals. The members of SQWM may all come from Queens, but we have different upbringings, ages, and have lived in many environments, each of us brings an individualistic aspect towards the same mission. Through each one of these women, I’ve learned no idea is too big or too small, no goal is out of reach. There’s a group of women here to support, guide, and encourage you all the way.”-Christina

IN PANDEMIC TIMES COVID-19 has brought about a tremendous amount of losses and struggles for Christina. She’s lost a loved one, and dealing with financial, educational, emotional, and physical limitations like many of us. But this pandemic has also forced her to undergo a lot of growth - spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. Not being able to be as social as she would like to, she was left to turn inward and re-examine many things that she could work on to better herself and evolve as a person in our evolving society.

SHE/HER What inspired Christy to join was her desire to be a part of a driven platform filled with women empowerment while propelling awareness to SQWM’s mission. 2020 was the year that she realized that she should not be afraid of her voice. She states ,I’ve always been outspokenpersonality-wise, but because of cultural taboos and trying to strike a balance with what I was made to believe was deemed as “appropriate” I’m still coming out of my shell. Many of my relatives have experienced gender injustice in the family and work environment." Christy also has seen many people in her community still have to deal with patriarchy. It has drastically affected youths then, and as now as adults.

IN PANDEMIC TIMES Since the pandemic, her daily routine has changed significantly. Just like many of us because of the upheaval with the virus and current events. She went through phases of being uninspired, having major anxiety due to a break in my normal routine, and questioning the uncontrollable. But then there were also moments of gratitude and awakening that led to her finding herself self-reflecting on everything she already had and finding ways to have tough conversations, and standing up for what she believes in.

Debora Chaitlall

SHE/HER/HERS Debora is a student of LaGuardia Community College majoring in Radiology Technology. She lives in Richmond Hill and enjoys music, sightseeing, collecting rocks, cooking and cats.

Her main goal is to be a part of the medical field and help her community.

DEBORA'S SQWM STORY Debora attended a Mental Health First Aid Training where she met Aminta of SQWM and was inspired by her. She followed Aminta's Instagram page and saw the community work she had been doing, which led Debora to the SQWM page. She was so impressed with the work done by SQWM she signed up to be a part of the group. Debora felt like it was her calling to be a part of SQWM, to give and help the community. It was the piece of her that was missing.

IN PANDEMIC TIMES Due to COVID-19, Debora spends most of her days indoors all alone. Her classes are online, and it is sometimes difficult for her to focus. The pandemic sometimes leaves Debora feeling unmotivated and down, but SQWM boosted Debora’s confidence. Debora is proud to be a part of a group that acknowledges gender issues, especially in the Caribbean community.

Denera Pope-Ragoonanan

SHE/HER/HERS Denera is originally from South Ozone Park and attended SUNY New Paltz for her undergraduate degree and Seton Hall University School of Law for her juris doctorate degree. She started her professional career as a researcher and human rights advocate. She has previously worked directly with marginalized groups such as Syrian Refugees and the Kurdish population in Eastern Turkey who were under threat by the Turkish governmental policies. In the US, she represented undocumented immigrants and trafficking victims at Seton Hall Law's human rights clinic. Denera also represented Guantanamo Bay detainees and worked as an observer to ensure Military Commissions in Guantanamo Bay give detainees a fair trial under a hybrid of US military and Federal law.

Currently, she serves as a legal researcher for NJ CURE, a New Jersey-based auto insurance company seeking to end discrimination in insurance underwriting. She is also an attorney with Central Jersey Legal Services’ housing department, where she works on landlord-tenant issues.

Personally, she considers herself a dog mom, karaoke singer, dancer, and an okay-ish swimmer.

DENERA'S SQWM STORY Joining SQWM allowed Denera to reconnect with her community from which, unfortunately, due to her career, she feels removed. SQWM allows her to work with other women to address the external problems that plague the community. Currently, we see how underfunded and overlooked South Ozone Park is especially during the pandemic. Despite having some of the highest COVID-19 rates, there are very few testing/vaccination sights as compared to other parts of Queens. SQWM’s work in addressing some of the community’s internal problems is inspiring.

For years, she would always feel an anxious fear walking out of the Lefferts A train station. Denera had been on the receiving end of sexual harassment as she would exit the train station countless times. “Over time, I forced myself to become jaded to it. When I saw some of SQWM’s artwork that told people to stop following and talking to women unsolicitedly near the station, I realized how desensitized I have become to it and that SQWM is the change we need.”-Denera

IN PANDEMIC TIMES COVID-19 most definitely impacted her life. It had clear impacts on her job search, living situation, physical health, and even personal relationships. She has taken this time to understand her privileges, take a step back and solidify my personal relationships and boundaries. Living during the pandemic tests her strength and allows her to walk away from situations that seem hopeless and toxic. Denera is reminded to pause and catch up in her life while at the same time manage the other difficulties and insecurities brought about by the pandemic.

Diana Seegobin

SHE/HER Diana Seegobin is a part of South Richmond Hill. She has completed her Bachelor's of Arts degree and is currently working as a Physical Therapist Aide at an outpatient orthopedic facility in Howard Beach. She is passionate about equal rights and helping others. Diana has a wide range of hobbies ranging from fish-keeping all the way to growing her own vegetable garden.

DIANA’S SQWM STORY Diana was inspired to join SQWM for the activism that they were doing right here in Queens. The first event that Diana attended was the paint night to bring awareness to domestic violence survivors and foster healing. Diana was really inspired by all the kindness, empathy, awareness, and overall message that the organization was able to send that afternoon. "South Queens Women's March continues to send this message at other events, such as where we chalked the sidewalks to bring awareness to gender-based harassment," said Diana

SHE/HER/HERS Diana is a first-generation Guyanese- American, raised in Jamaica, Queens. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Stony Brook University and is currently pursuing her MSW at Fordham University. She works as a case manager for a non-profit agency that services the needs of homebound seniors in Queens. She loves to travel and meet new people because she believes you learn more about yourself by learning from others.

SHE/HER/HERS Emily Cheng is currently a senior at Princeton University majoring in Molecular Biology. She aspires to become a doctor but will take two gap years after graduation to pursue management consulting. She is passionate about making quality education and healthcare accessible to all.

SHE/THEY Fayola is from South Jamaica, Queens-specifically Rochdale Village. In 2019, she graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania with a degree in Anthropology & Sociology and Policy Studies. In 2020, Fayola began a Master's of Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University. In the short term, she is interested in becoming a high school social studies teacher. In the long term, she plans to open a bookstore and community space in NYC. Their goal is to address the inequities that marginalize BIPOC students within public education. She is excited about the opportunity to uplift, celebrate and highlight the history, heritage, and culture of BIPOC communities. FAYOLA'S SQWM STORY Throughout high school and college, she has been engaged in organizations and movements related to social justice and community advocacy. Since returning to New York after graduating from college, she has been interested in engaging with community organizations that are supporting communities of color within Queens. The mission of SQWM speaks to them, particularly as related to applying an intersectional lens to empower individuals of marginalized genders.

SQWM is also dedicated to addressing the specific challenges faced by community members of South Queens, which has been traditionally overlooked and underserved. Overall, SQWM provides opportunities for them to support the community she loves and the community that has shaped them into the person they are today.

“SQWM has impacted my life by providing an opportunity for me to reconnect with my community and to connect with amazingly dedicated, passionate, and creative individuals who are committed to working towards equity. Not only have I learned more about the community organizing landscape of South Queens, but I have also been able to directly participate in initiatives to address the inequities impacting our community. SQWM has impacted me by reminding me that everyone has the capacity to engage in efforts for social change. IN PANDEMIC TIMES COVID-19 has emphasized the power and influence that we as individuals have to impact the communities we are a part of positively. Local and national governments have failed to adequately address our communities' needs throughout the course of the pandemic. Still, it has been amazing to see how community members have stepped up to support one another through efforts like mutual aid networks and community fridges. Jenn Persaud

SHE/HER/HERS Having Grown up in Jamaica and attended school in South Ozone Park, Queens has always held a special place in Jenn’s heart. She spent her early life between Florida and New York, graduating from the University of Florida as a Double Gator with a Bachelor's in Marketing and Masters in International Business. After graduating in 2013, she fell into the startup technology world and never looked back. She has strong feelings that no one should waste their time doing something they don't enjoy, and startups allow her to help build something from the ground up, which she absolutely loves. The intersection between marketing and psychology has always fascinated her, so she found connecting those dots and helping the biggest retail brands be an exciting daily challenge for herself. Outside of work (and COVID19), she absolutely loves traveling the world and soaking up all of the history & culture that different places have to offer. She is also always down to try new restaurants all over New York City (food = life) because we live in the best city ever. If she isn't in another country or scoping out the latest foodie find, you'll most likely find her spending all her time with family & friends. Nurturing relationships is incredibly important for her, and she loves one-on-one conversations talking about everything from old memories to career/life goals to fun trivia facts :)

JENN'S SQWM STORY Jenn has always spearheaded and been involved in community service efforts with her jobs in Manhattan, but for years she felt like there was so much more that she could be doing in her own community. She knows Aminta through mandir. After following/always being inspired by her work, Jenn didn't hesitate when Aminta initially reached out to talk about her plans of hosting a Women's March in our neighborhood. When COVID hit New York hard, and the march turned into a full-blown non-profit organization to support those in South Queens, it felt like an oddly serendipitous opportunity to finally bring Jenn's passion for giving back into her own backyard. Knowing that many of our community members work in stores, as housekeepers, etc., and lived in multigenerational households, it was clear that they would be deeply affected. SQWM was Jenn's call to step up and help in any way she could.

Joining SQWM has truly been the addition to her life that she didn't know she needed. It's been incredible to see what a small (but growing!) group of badass women can help empower our community members, especially in the middle of a global pandemic! She is truly inspired by how selfless these incredible ladies are every day, and their dedication constantly pushes her to show up as the best version of herself. She has always felt like the best thing she could do as she grew in her career was give back to the place that helped raise her. What she didn't realize is just how fulfilling joining SQWM would be to her. It has helped her understand the importance of building up the community we live in with like-minded individuals and how simply seeing a smile on someone's face who looks just like you can make everything worthwhile.

IN PANDEMIC TIMES In late March 2020, both her boyfriend's neighbor and her father tested positive for COVID-19 - when she didn't know much about the virus other than the lives it was taking. For her dad, who is a kidney transplant recipient, any illness is compromising, so this was devastating. The hardest part was not being able to visit him while he was in the hospital for a week. Thankfully he has been perfectly fine since, but unfortunately, the neighbor passed away at just 39 years old. Having seen the far-stretching impact of COVID-19, She’s been a huge advocate for staying home, not interacting with others outside your household, and wearing a mask!

Jheanell Thompson

SHE/HER/HERS Jheanell Thompson is a social worker for the homeless population. She has over 15 years of experience with a social services background. She has opportunities with brokers, landlords, and management companies to link them with families living in shelters. She then helps prepare the families to transition to permanent, independent living. Jheanell’s personal hobbies include shopping and meditation.

JHENELL'S SQWM STORY Jheanell joined SQWM for many reasons. Personally, she loves to help others who are in need. Helping give families another chance in life because financially they’re not able to, mentally they’re not ready to, emotionally they’re scared.

SHE/HER Marta Macias is a current senior at John Jay College and an aspiring District Attorney. While she originally hails from Brooklyn, she loves traveling to Queens for its diverse culture and food options. In her spare time, Marta loves shopping and taking photos.

Melinda Harbhajan

SHE/HER Melinda is from Queens Village. She holds a degree in interdisciplinary biology and hopes to pursue a career in medicine. In the past, Melinda has worked as a medical scribe and currently is working in neurosurgery research.

SHE/HER Mercedes has a BA in Public Policy & Admin and is Currently in Seminary School (Masters of Divinity). She is also the CEO of Community Advocacy Consulting Firm, a candidate for elected office, a former Political Staffer, a former lobbyist and nonprofit support for executives, and is passionate about helping communities thrive and prosper. SHE/HER/HERS Mohini Bownoth has lived in Richmond Hill, Queens, for the past 25 years. She attended Queens College and York College’s Continuing Education Program. Now retired, Mohini has had a long, fulfilling career in a managerial position for over 25 years.

Movina Seepersaud

SHE/HER Movina Seepersaud is the co-founder of Swasti Vaatika; a dharmic organization focused on spreading positivity and Vedic knowledge through art, writing, and music. She was born and raised in Jamaica, Queens, by her parents, who immigrated to America from Guyana.

Movina has recently graduated from TIME 2000, a scholarship program within CUNY Queens College for individuals aspiring to be secondary mathematics teachers, and is now continuing her studies in the MSEd program at Queens College. Movina is extremely passionate about the arts and loves writing poetry, singing, and creating artwork in her free time. IN PANDEMIC TIMES COVID-19 completely derailed all of the plans that Movina had made for herself. She did not graduate in the way that she had looked forward to for the entirety of my bachelor’s degree and then delayed the start of her teaching career to keep her family safe. While this drastic change of plans impacted her self-worth and has definitely been a struggle, Movina is glad to be safe and able to prioritize the wellness of herself and her family, something she feels like she didn’t have the opportunity to do in the past. Nicole Cobham

SHE/HER/HERS Born in New York City and raised in South Florida, Nicole Cobham is the only child of a family from Trinidad & Tobago and Grenada.

Although she is originally from Fresh Meadows, Nicole currently resides in Forest Hills, Queens.

She is a Senior Associate at KPMG in the Banking & Capital Market industry. She is experienced in international tax, financial crimes, and regulatory compliance. Nicole graduated in 2017 with her Bachelors of Science in Finance and is currently working towards her Masters of Science in Finance. She loves to travel and has been to 15+ countries. She also enjoys the outdoors by hiking, playing sports, fishing, and archery. NICOLE'S SQWM STORY As Covid began to be more prominent and seeing how we lacked the necessary resources, Nicole started her research on how she could play a role in supporting communities and organizations that were in need. She then came across SQWM and instantly loved what they were standing for. Upon meeting the lovely people who began this organization and seeing their passion and drive for our community, she knew this was where she wanted to be.

“Joining SQWM has impacted my life in several ways. Being able to actually see how our efforts affect our community and those in need has been such a blessing. The first time it hit me was from a conversation I had with a community member during my first distribution, from the same city my family was from in Trinidad. I was thanked for the hard work we were doing and began to discuss how we need to be sticking together and supporting one another as a people, especially within the Caribbean community. Due to SQWM, I have found myself more comfortable having tough conversations, taking time for self-care and mental health, being more aware of areas of improvement in my community, driving for ways to reach our community related to youth and professional development and so on. IN PANDEMIC TIMES From the very beginning of the pandemic, having a family member who was diagnosed and having several others work in the medical field facing it daily, was very challenging.

SHE/HER/HERS Paveena is a Human Resources Professional, with more than 10 years of experience in the HR field. She is passionate about her community, participating in positive and uplifting activities, and learning from other people from various walks of life. Radha Kahrim

SHE/HER/HERS Radha was a pandemic graduate! She was a part of The City College of New York Class of 2020 and majored in Biochemistry. In her second year of college, Radha practiced yoga for the first time. She has been practicing ever since and is now undergoing yoga teacher training to deepen my knowledge.

Radha lives in Queens Village where there aren’t any yoga studios nearby. This is something she hopes to change in the future.

Radha is currently employed as a certified medical assistant at an OB/GYN office and ultimately would like to advance within the medical field.

RADHA'S SQWM STORY "SQWM is genuinely passionate about their service to the community. I wanted to join because events are aimed towards my community. SQWM conducts many different kinds of outreach and tries to help educate the population as well. It’s a great organization overall and it’s inspiring knowing the women involved in this movement.

It’s rewarding to know that I contributed to alleviating food insecurity in my community.

SQWM also gives back to its members. There was a virtual watercolor paint night in which we painted postcards. I was able to send my postcards to family in different states and connect with them thanks to that event."

SHE/HER Savita Prasad was born in Jamaica Hospital and grew up in Hollis. She graduated from Hunter College with a BA in Biological Sciences and Psychology and is planning on pursuing a master's degree before applying to medical school. Social justice issues such as genderbased violence, gender equality, and representation/anti-racism are close to Savita’s heart. She’s also recently rediscovered her love for the craft of writing. SHE/HER I am a junior at Thomas A Edison CTE High School. I am in the cybersecurity shop class and I am hoping to further my career in this field in the future. Some of my hobbies include watching movies, reading, and of course volunteering. Since I was stuck at home for months on end I watched a lot of movies. When I would finish watching a movie that I like I would see if it was based on a book and read the book.

I think that the book goes more in-depth with the story. Last but not least volunteering. My middle school was very much into volunteering so I would volunteer at any event I could find. SHIVANI'S SQWM STORY "I first met SQWM at a food pantry. They welcomed me with open arms and treated me like I was one of them. They were very nice, and they helped me in every way that I needed. Even though I have not been a member for very long, I know that this organization will impact my life tremendously. I hope that this organization will help me get my voice heard. I want to express myself freely, and I believe that this organization will help me achieve that goal.

I worked with SQSM at a pantry, and I was pleased by what I saw. I liked that you shared mensural products and condoms for people in need. As a female, I know that these products can be expensive, so it was nice to see that being there. SQWM was very welcoming to me, and it was fun working with them. "

Sumi Dey

SHE/THEY Sumi is a socially-engaged multimedia artist and civic designer who is dedicated to empowering underserved communities through design thinking and a humancentered approach. While she is currently based in Boston, she was born and raised in South Richmond Hill, Queens. She received her BA in Sociology from The City College of New York and her MA in Media Design at Emerson College in Massachusetts. Sumi's work is primarily concerned with community empowerment, civic engagement, and reimagining feminist frameworks to promote intersectionality and social justice. Their work explores the significance of using civic imagination to help QTBIPoC youth think beyond oppressive structures, heal, and envision their ideal futures. Their Master’s thesis, Plane together, is a Zoom-based virtual experience that promotes positive civic engagement among young people ages 15–24 through an inclusive, imaginative world-building activity.

Most recently, they organized and led the creative branding for the Social Justice + Media Symposium, a day-long event exploring the intersection of social justice and media as it relates to community and pedagogy in daily life. Currently, they are working as the Lead Designer for the Mapping Impactful Media Literacy Project, which aims to measure the impact of formal and informal media literacy curricula and advocates for indicators that support the needs of communities and youth at the margins of society. She is also a corner store coffee enthusiast, an Arian with an endless appetite for picking up new projects and artistic mediums, and a proud plant mom. After hours, she collaborates with nonprofits and local progressive movements to amplify their messaging through good design.

SUMI 'S SQWM STORY “I joined SQWM because it is an intersectional, multi-generational movement that is absolutely necessary within our communities, where conversations about gender justice and womxn’s empowerment often go overlooked and unheard. The SQWM team has worked diligently to create spaces and movements to dismantle the norms, practices, and institutions that support patriarchy and gender injustice through a multicultural lens. I am constantly in awe of how quickly the movement has grown to respond to various community challenges, such as food insecurity, public health inequities, civic engagement, and period poverty.

SHE/HER/HERS Theresa is a second-generation immigrant of West Indian descent. She grew up in a single-parent household in Jamaica, Queens, with her mother and sister. Growing up she was instilled with ethics, morals, and values of spreading kindness, respect, leaving a positive impact and lending a helping hand wherever you can. Theresa is an Alumna of Stony Brook University with a Bachelor of Social Welfare and Master of Social Work with a Specialization in Integrated Health, in which she was a Fellow of the Health

IBHWET Grant. Early on, Theresa knew she wanted to make a difference in the community. She has volunteered at libraries, local senior citizen centers and is a Learning Leader in the NYC Public School System. Theresa worked as a Teacher and Office Manager for a NASA program aimed towards children based at CUNY York College for several years.

During this time, she performed various community outreach initiatives such as educating and empowering parents and children from underserved minority backgrounds. Theresa sought to prove that they do indeed have the opportunity to advance in STEM. Culture also played a pivotal role in her life; Theresa was an active member of the South Queens Hindu community. She was on the Youth Executive board of her mandir, assisted in the assembly of cultural shows and was a part of the production team of the mandir’s television program. She has received multiple recognitions for her outstanding work in the community including but not limited to NYS Senate Citations and City Council Citations. Her hobbies include making sweets, watching true crime documentaries, and petting all the animals that she is allergic to.

THERESA'S SQWM STORY When Theresa first noticed SQWM, what caught her eye was the amazing work she saw this group of women doing in South Queens. She saw the passion for what they believed in and the genuine love for our community. She also saw the “taboo” topics aunties and uncles don’t like talking about finally having a spotlight. Theresa saw empowered women empowering other women, and she was so proud. At that moment, she knew that this was something she needed and wanted to be a part of and help out in any way that she could.

“SQWM has helped me reconnect to my community again. Being a part of a support system for at-risk families while building our community’s backbone during a pandemic has been a selfless experience. My mother, who passed away last year, was extremely involved in education, community service, and civic engagement, and she has always been my role model.

Being a part of SQWM allows me to feel that I am continuing her work in our community and be a voice to the unheard and an advocate for change. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for us.”

IN PANDEMIC TIMES This pandemic has allowed Theresa to sincerely stop and appreciate the little things we may take for granted. Theresa says: "It also puts into perspective, as cliché as it may sound, that we truly need to be that change we want to see in the world. We cannot be scared to raise our voices or stand our ground for OUR rights as human beings. We’re living in the construction of pronounced historical moments. Now is the time for us to come together (socially distanced, of course) as a community in a united front and demand reform, equality, and equity."

Usha Deodat

SHE/HER/HERS Usha Deodat lives in Queens, New York. She attended Saint Joseph’s College, where she earned her Executive MBA. Since graduating, Usha has worked in the financial services industry. She is also the founder and CEO of Seamossmom, a company that provides natural, organic products to consumers. In her spare time, Usha enjoys taking long walks in nature and explores her passion for natural medicine.
