AboutSQWM

Inspired by global and national women’s rights movements, South Queens Women’s March (SQWM) amplifies the voices of South Queens’ diverse women SQWM was founded with a mission to bring women in South Queens together to raise awareness about gender-based violence and gender equity issues in the form of mass mobilization on our local streets, celebrating our resilience in spite of the struggles we experience We were moved to the formation of South Queens Women’s March after the death of Donna Rehanna Dojoy in November 2019 Donna was brutally murdered by her husband who subsequently committed suicide. The circumstances of Donna’s death were almost identical to the death of Stacy Singh one year prior We were accustomed to holding vigils for slain women in our community.

We are a multi-generational, intersectional platform working to foster women’s empowerment through dismantling norms, practices, and institutions that support patriarchy and gender injustice, including gender-based violence

We take to the streets to unify women and gender non-conforming individuals in our community and provide them with the tools and resources necessary to empower their own lives and thrive Our long-term vision is to create a world free of violence, injustice, patriarchy, and oppression; a world where all genders are on equitable footing, in the home, workplace, houses of worship, and our community at large

Since our inception, we realized that our community had several pressing needs during the pandemic, such as the need for wellness, food, period supplies, books and other educational resources, and efforts to curb genderbased violence We hosted several pop-up pantries and served thousands of families We are also engaging our community members through youth and professional development, civic engagement, and advocacy Our community became an extension of our family and we engaged in the advancement of solidarity and community accountability.

South Queens Women’s March is grateful to the members that fight every day for justice and access to resources in South Queens. This storybook captures many of our members that played an immense role in building a safe and sustainable community in South Queens

Aminta’s favorite SQWM memory was the day SQWM cut the ribbon on its office space

This moment was so historic for the wider community “Our office has literally opened doors for programming spanning from mutual aid, to curbing gender-based violence, to promoting healing through the arts, to building political power, and paving the way for mechanisms supporting youth empowerment and professional development. There was no better feeling than knowing we had a space of our own, one that was a sanctuary and where people could feel at home.

Aminta dreams of a South Queens where people across all identities and backgrounds recognize their overlapping needs and work together to cultivate thriving communities where there are shared spaces to promote creativity and culture Aminta dreams of a South Queens that is free from patriarchal systems of oppression, and one where all people feel safe, free and liberated Aminta dreams of a South Queens where violence in all forms is a thing of the past and where harmony, peace, and justice prevail

“I dream of a South Queens where all people feel safe, free and liberated.”

One of Mehar’s most memorable SQWM moments was during one of our monthly food pantries! As she was helping manage the line and organize community members she had one of the most heartwarming connections that she will always remember As she helped an elderly gentleman through the line, he began to tell her about himself and his struggle We held hands as tears ran down his face and they shared a truly beautiful moment With the COVID pandemic still fresh in our minds it has become harder and harder to create genuine, intimate moments with strangers but our pantries always bring Mehar such joy

One dream Mehar has for SQWM is for it to have a larger full time space, with full time staff, that is able to provide the community with a permanent space for mutual aid and gender justice She dreams of SQWM’s space and organization to be a beacon that community members can use as a one stop shop for their needs, with access to medical professionals, lawyers, wellness options and more She dreams for it to be a permanent location that is a mainstay in the community and is actively used by people of all races, religions, and ages

“I dream of our space and organization to be a beacon that community members can use as a one stop shop for their needs, with access to medical professionals, lawyers, wellness options and more.”

Amanda always knew her passion lay in making the world a better place and giving back in any way possible. Keeping this goal in mind in all her endeavors, she initially pursued a finance major, but realized it wouldn't allow her to help people as she desired. Consequently, she switched to an education major and has since been working as a teacher. She graduated from The New York City College of Technology (City Tech) with a Bachelor of Science in Education in Spring 2018 and from the New York Institute of Institute with a Master of Science in Spring 2020, achieving both degrees with summa cum laude honors

Amanda holds the essentials distributions/popup pantries very close to her heart as they directly cater to the immediate needs of the community Through these efforts, she is able to offer essential resources and assistance to those grappling with food insecurity, a cause she's always been passionate about addressing It's a tangible way for her to create a positive impact in people's lives and cultivate a sense of unity within the community. However, her most memorable moment was leading the project to establish a vaccine site in Richmond Hill. Despite persistently high COVID-19 rates in Richmond Hill and Ozone Park, city officials did not prioritize setting up a vaccination site in the area. In tandem with the Department of Health, Faith Assembly Church, and a few board members of SQWM, Amanda and her team were able to set one up in the neighborhood

Amanda envisions a future for the South Queens community where SQWM evolves into a self-sustaining organization with a dedicated full-time staff While maintaining the spirit of volunteerism holds significance, having a consistent, full-time team could amplify SQWM’s impact and lead to significant benefits for the community The potential accomplishments and positive outcomes SQWM could achieve with a committed staff on board are immense

Amelia, a first-generation IndoCaribbean educator, finds that her involvement defines a significant part of her identity. Her overarching goal has always been to support others, in any context, whether it's within her work or through community engagement Aside from this, she is a poet working on her second Masters Degree. Outside of her academic and volunteer commitments, she passionately enjoys Socasize as a dedicated enthusiast of The Figure Studio

The SQWM project Amelia has been most passionate about this year has been the collaboration with POOJA Boys. Engaging with the youth within this organization has been a significant learning experience for her. Their insights not only help her stay in the loop, but also instill faith in her that the future is in good hands

Amelia holds a dream for the South Queens community where the youth actively participate in after-school community organizations. Her vision is for these spaces to offer a sense of safety and opportunities for engagement in activism or similar pursuits, becoming a natural and integral part of their lives.

Anita Beharry, hailing from South Ozone Park, embraces the diverse and blended community that encompasses various nationalities and cultures Originally from Guyana, she finds joy and fulfillment in working with children Anita's favorite past time involves sitting by any body of water, be it the ocean, lake, or river, as it brings her a sense of relaxation Fearlessly open to new experiences, she approaches life with a willingness to explore and to try anything new, whether it be a hobby or a career

Anita enjoyed volunteering at SQWM food pantries, especially during the pandemic. Feeling blessed, she appreciates the opportunity granted to her, allowing her to contribute her time and efforts towards assisting those in need

Anita Beharry envisions SQWM exploring literacy programs for adults. She recognizes that a significant number of individuals, particularly those in their mid-thirties who recently migrated from Guyana, face challenges in reading, writing, and computer usage. These challenges stem from early responsibilities such as caring for siblings or contributing to the family at a young age, which hindered their access to education. Anita advocates for the involvement of more older women in SQWM, including mothers and grandmothers, to address and support the unique needs of this demographic

“I feel blessed that I am given the opportunity to contribute my time to help others in need.”

Anjali was born and raised in Richmond Hill, New York, into a Guyanese family Growing up in a Guyanese community, she developed a strong passion for social justice, particularly concerning the rights of women within her community. Her academic journey led her to the City College of New York, where she discovered her fervor for political science and anthropology. Progressing from her studies, Anjali took on significant roles, serving as the civic engagement coordinator and co-director of the gender-based violence committee at SQWM. Simultaneously, she holds the position of Young Women’s Leadership coordinator at South Asian Youth Action (SAYA), collaborating with young women across various schools and programs

Anjali recalls a profoundly memorable moment when she spoke at the rally advocating for abortion rights outside the Queens Borough President's office. It stood as a powerful instance where she experienced a sense of empowerment amid a climate of widespread panic and despair throughout the country. It was a unique occasion when the South Queens neighborhood seemed united and impassioned about the rights being revoked from women

Anjali envisions a dream a community entirely liberated from oppression and violence. Her aspiration is for this locality to become a haven of joy and tranquility, eliminating the necessity to seek such refuge elsewhere, but rather cultivating and nurturing these qualities within the community.

“A dream I have for South Queens is to live in a community completely free of oppression and violence.”

Jennifer reflects on two particularly significant moments with SQWM that hold a special place in her heart. The first was the inaugural pantry hosted by SQWM during the peak of the pandemic This experience deeply humbled her, witnessing firsthand the impact that a dedicated few could make in the community. It shifted her mindset on the importance of community work and reinforced her commitment to supporting the place that nurtured many The second memorable occasion was hosting the 2022 SQWM picnic at her home alongside her husband It was a heartwarming gathering where everyone dedicated to making the world a better place came together to let loose a bit and play fun games, share in home cooked meals, and enjoy the outdoors together

Jennifer holds numerous aspirations for the cherished South Queens community, but if she were to choose one, it would be for individuals to realize how much of a say they really have Often overlooked among the community, many of whom are immigrants or first-generation Americans, is the realization that they can create substantial impact by voting consistently, participating in community conversations, and being an ally to all groups Jennifer firmly believes that knowledge empowers, and she earnestly hopes for the day when the community she deeply loves and that has offered her so much will rise and assert its inherent power

“Knowledge truly is power, and I hope to one day see the community I love so dearly, and that has given me so much, rise up and make that power known.”
