Issues that Redistricting Impacts

What is redistricting?

Your voice should matter in your district.

Housing, Healthcare & Education Elected officials have the ability to ensure that our communities can access affordable healthcare including access to COVID-19 testing and vaccines, and access to reproductive healthcare. They can also promote protection from eviction, affordable housing and quality education.

Immigrant Rights & Workers Rights Elected officials can shape fair immigration policy, as well as policies that prevent crimes against immigrants. They can also fund community-based organizations that speak your language and understand your culture. Elected officials can also strengthen workers rights through legislation.

Every decade, states and cities draw new district maps for congressional, state and city legislative races. Politicians who oversee this process have often used this power to give their party or preferred candidates an unfair advantage by drawing maps in which favor their own interests — a scheme known as gerrymandering.

(Brennan Center for Justice) Based on the 2020 Census results, Congressional, State Senate and State Assembly district maps must be redrawn.

If a district is drawn that divides your neighborhood into 2+ districts, your community will have less power and less of an opportunity to elect the candidate(s) of your choice in elections.

This is because votes will be split among multiple districts instead of remaining in contiguous and compact districts.

What We're Doing South Queens Women's March is serving on APA Voice's Redistricting Task Force to make sure the redistricting process is transparent, equitable, and inclusive of our community's voices — so that maps reflect the will of voters, permit for competitive races, and fairly represent communities of color. As part of our efforts, we seek to educate and mobilize voters on why redistricting matters, and to hold those who will be responsible for redrawing district lines accountable to the people.

Sanitation, Transportation & Small Business Elected officials can help keep small businesses open by advocating for greater support.

They can also advocate for increased sanitation, including more frequent garbage pickups and bins, and more public transportation options in our communities.
