Clean energy solutions for Logan businesses An Australian-first initiative is giving City of Logan businesses a chance to slash their energy bills and save money with minimal up-front costs.

The Clean Technology Business Cluster (CTBC) aims to help businesses reduce energy consumption by providing funding to pay for solar, LED lighting and other power-saving equipment.

A $5 million funding pool is available through the pilot program being run by energy efficiency specialists Websters Group for eligible businesses in Logan.

City Image Chairperson, Councillor Laurie Smith, said the CTBC pilot was an innovative approach to encourage local businesses to become more sustainable, environmentally and economically.

“This model could be a win for businesses that make the decision to look for innovative ways to reduce their operational costs,” he said.

“It’s up to each business to engage the Webster Group to audit their energy use and make a decision based on the best outcomes for their business.

“Participating businesses stand to benefit from reduced electricity costs without having to pay for the majority of costs up front.

“The energy saving projects could range in value from $50,000 up to $2 million providing the nominated projects put forward by local businesses fulfil certain criteria.

“The community benefits because the manufacturers and small to medium sized businesses in our city will adopt more sustainable operations, meaning less power consumption and, ultimately, less pollution.”

“We think it is fantastic that Websters Group has selected the City of Logan as the place to test out what could become a revolutionary energy saving finance model for businesses around the country.

Ryan Dillon, Managing Director of Websters Group, the company launching the CTBC pilot in Logan, said the upfront costs of installing the energy saving equipment were recouped via the savings participating businesses made on their energy bills.

“Reducing high energy bills goes straight to the bottom line and has the potential to significantly improve business resilience in the current economic environment.”

Rates reform aligns communities Redland City Council has rationalised rating categories in its 2016-17 Budget to provide a simpler system that allows for consistence across the City.

The changes, adopted today, will see the rate in the dollar on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands decreased to bring them in line with mainland communities, while the same minimum rate will be adopted across the City.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the move – which has seen the number of ratings categories fall from 45 four years ago to 13 – would bring balance to the rating system and pave the way for increased infrastructure spending on the islands.

“This can been seen through this year’s budgeting of $2.47 million for the green seal road program on the islands, with the aim of extending that program further,’’ Cr Williams said.

The green seal road program on Coochiemudlo Island has been allocated $1.1 million.

Council community grants available Turn your great ideas into reality with a community grant from Redland City Council, with applications for the next round open from today.

Redland Mayor Karen Williams said the latest round of community grants would support a wide variety of community-led projects and initiatives, with assistance available for Organisation Support, Project Support, Conservation and Capital Infrastructure.

“Every year, Council provides more than $750,000 in grants and sponsorship to help local organisations, community groups and individuals make a difference in the Redlands through events, projects and initiatives that strengthen the community,” she said.

“More than 40 initiatives supporting the arts, cultural heritage, the environment, community development, sport and recreation and economic development received community grants and sponsorship last financial year.

“In 2015-16, Council’s capital infrastructure grants funded a new fire station and emergency services club on Lamb Island, a new men’s shed at Redland Bay and further renovations to the Volunteer Marine Rescue base on North Stradbroke Island.

“Our conservation grants are supporting a survey of coastal dolphins and further mapping of coral reef in Moreton Bay, as well as planting more than 2000 bird habitat trees at the Straddie Golf Club.”

Cr Williams said the diversity of successful applicants across the community illustrated the range of initiatives supported that benefitted the

broader community.

“Organisations seeking to improve their services are also eligible for funding, with the Old Schoolhouse Gallery, Russell Island Culture Centre and Redlands Touch Association among seven organisations who shared more than $18,000 in funding last round.”

The next round of Sponsorship will open 15 August and close 16 September 2016, with new application forms and program guidelines available when the round opens.

The Redlands’ reputation as a whale watching hotspot will be on show this Saturday during a traditional ceremony to welcome the whales at Point Lookout, North Stradbroke Island.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Yura Yalingbila (Welcome of the Whales) was an annual tradition of the Quandamooka People and one of the highlights of this year’s Quandamooka Festival.

“Every year, thousands of humpback whales pass North Stradbroke Island between May and October, migrating north to breed in the warmer waters of the Great Barrier Reef before returning south with their calves,” she said.

“This event is an opportunity to be part of a traditional welcoming ceremony for the humpback whales and wish them well on their journey from the best land-based whale-watching location in Australia.

“Featuring the Yulu Burri Ba traditional dancers and live music from singer-songwriter Andrea Kirwin, BlackSalt featuring Georgia Corowa and Waveny Yasso, and talented local choralists from the Stradbroke Island Singers, it’s set to be a great day out for the whole family.

Centenary Plains BMX jumps into new clubhouse The Centenary Plains BMX Club will now be able to build a long awaited clubhouse following the announcement of a $300,000 Get Playing Plus Grant from the Queensland Government.

The grant provides a final instalment on a planned $900,000 project to build a new access road, pump track and clubhouse for the Waller Road,Browns Plains – based club.

Logan City Deputy Mayor and Division 8 Councillor, Cherie Dalley, said she was delighted the State Government had provided a contribution to top up Logan City Council’s $575,000 commitment to make the project possible.

“This is great news for all the members of the club who meet regularly and host competitions that draw people from across the sate,” Councillor Dalley said.

“This is a club that grew through the efforts of citizens who approached council and built a track for BMX riders when the area was on the fringe of urban development.

“The club has also raised $25,000 to put towards this project.

“Over time the club grew – but it was still operating its administration out of a few on-site cargo containers.

“I’m thrilled that for the first time in the club’s 30 year history they will finally have a clubhouse.”

Chair of the Sport and Community Services Committee, Councillor Steve Swenson, said sporting clubs throughout Logan had benefitted from a range of council and state government grants.

“Last September, council submitted three applications for Get Playing Plus Grants – asking for the state to contribute to the development of the BMX facilities at Waller Park, Stage 1 of the Beenleigh Pool redevelopment and a new sports and community hub at Yarrabilba” he said. ““All three received state government funding grants, adding a total of $2.3 million towards projects valued at $6.954 million.

“Upgrading these three facilities will mean a lot to our community in terms of jobs and improved community infrastructure.”

Brisbane biomedical sector under microscope Brisbane’s sciences sector will soon have its say about growing Queensland’s burgeoning biomedical and life sciences industry over the next 10 years and creating high-tech jobs for the students and researchers of today.

Researchers and industry leaders are invited to contribute to the Palaszczuk Government’s recently released Biomedical and Life Sciences Roadmap discussion paper at a special consultation session in Brisbane on 29 July.

Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Dr Anthony Lynham encouraged the biomedical sector to participate in the session, one of a series to be held across the state.

“We want to generate the high-tech jobs of the future by taking our growing community of research centres and start-up companies to a national and global level.

“We want input from industry, academia and the community about how and where we can turn ideas into products and start-ups into leaders to generate jobs and business opportunities,” he said.

The latest figures show the biomedical industry in Queensland has a total annual income of $2.7 billion. The therapeutic medicines and devices sub sector alone employs more than 6000 people in Queensland.

Queensland’s biomedical and life sciences sector is one of six priority sectors identified as growth targets under Advance Queensland: advanced manufacturing, aerospace, biofutures, defence, mining equipment, technology and services; and biomedical and life sciences.

Consultation on the discussion paper is open until 5.00pm, Friday 5 August 2016.
