Trials of alternatives to single use drinking cups are being evaluated at stadium venues in Brisbane, Townsville and on the Gold Coast to help protect Queensland’s great lifestyle.

Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the first innings of Stadiums Queensland’s reusable drink container trials was this weekend’s Brisbane Heat Big Bash games at The Gabba.

“We know enjoying a cold beer is a big part of the world-class event experience at a Queensland stadium, but we want it to also be sustainable,” Mr Hinchliffe

“The reusable drink container trial is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s ongoing commitment to protecting Queensland’s great lifestyle and our unique environment for future generations.

three options including polypropylene plastic and aluminium cups, and canned beverages which can be used over and over again or recycled. “Up to 10,000 reusable cups will be served at The Gabba and Queensland Country Bank Stadium with spectators encouraged to return used containers to designated collection points inside the venue for offsite cleaning.

“The trial is about investigating a scalable and cost-effective system to deliver a reusable drink container solution that works for spectators, Queensland’s stadium venues, and the environment.

During May 2022, Stadiums Queensland called for tenders for trials of alternatives to single use drinking containers at stadium venues with Wise and WOSUP assessed as the most suitable and experienced options for the supply and cleaning of multi-use cups.

Reusable polypropylene plastic cups will be trailed at The Gabba for Sunday’s Big Bash match and aluminium cups at the Cowboys’ home games at Queensland Country Bank Stadium on 27 March and 7 April.

FESTIVE SEASON HOLIDAYMAKERS DELIVER $3 BILLION

Festive season holidays across Queensland are on track to deliver more than $3 billion to tourism operators and the State’s visitor economy.

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said from 10 December to 9 January, Queensland and interstate holidaymakers generated 15 million visitor nights, up almost 2.5 per cent on the 2021 festive season.

“This initial Christmas school holiday data shows Queensland’s domestic tourism recovery remains strong, on track and nation-leading,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“In more great news for Queensland jobs and tourism operators, this festive season’s more than $3 billion holiday spend will continue to grow ahead of Australia Day.

“By the end of the holidays, it’s predicted the total number of visitors traveling to Queensland’s world-class destinations will be more than 1.5 million.

“As the first Christmas holiday season since the lifting of national Covid restrictions, Queensland continues to benefit from Australians’ love of travel.

“The number of interstate arrivals enjoying Queensland’s great holiday lifestyle jumped by 123 per cent during December alone, delivering a bumper Christmas for most destinations.

“Tourism and Events Queensland data shows Brisbane leads the top five destinations for interstate arrivals, followed by the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Tropical North Queensland and the Southern Great Barrier Reef.”

Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Brett Fraser said across the State demand for Christmas holiday accommodation was up by almost 10 per cent.

“The feedback from Queensland tourism operators this festive season is overwhelmingly positive, and that’s a good sign for ongoing recovery in the year ahead,” Mr Fraser said.

“Many operators report a noticeable increase in interstate visitors compared with Christmas 2021 as Australians shake off the pandemic.

“Holiday accommodation occupancy on the Sunshine Coast and the Whitsundays is near capacity at 90 per cent with some providers booked out.

“On the Gold Coast, occupancy rates are at almost 84 per cent and have averaged up to 80 per cent in Tropical North Queensland including Cairns and Port Douglas.

Tourism Research Australia’s latest survey released yesterday, recorded 2.44 million overnight visitor trips in Queensland during October 2022.

In coming weeks, Tourism and Events Queensland will roll out a new suite of compelling Queensland holiday deals and experiences to drive extra domestic visitor demand during February and March.

HERE’S TO LIFE HEALTH AND WELL BEING

As long as we live there is never enough singing ~ Martin Luther At Here’s to Life, in the Sing for Life program we believe that Martin Luther was absolutely on the money with that particular quote! Sing for Life is a fun program run for men and women who want to sing for the sheer joy of singing. So many of us are scared to open our mouths and sing for fear of being told we’re not very good. But we should never let fear guide what our hearts want to do. Did you know that singing improves your heart and lung function; releases endorphins, thus making you happier; teaches your better balance and posture; and makes you live longer? Countless studies have proven time and again that these are just some of the benefits of singing. Imagine gaining from these benefits whilst doing something you love – awesome!!

Sing for Life has no scary audition process, and EVERYONE is welcome. This year we would love to hear some more men in the group to really fill out our base line. Gentlemen, let me give you five good reasons to come and join us: you can sing your heart out; you can sharpen up or just learn some singing skills; you will establish lasting friendships; you will enrich your life (and if you perform, the lives of others); and you know what….you will just have fun. In a wonderfully friendly and somewhat informal atmosphere, you will learn from our instructor Warryn James how to sing in a group, learn some new harmonies, and perhaps even learn some funky ‘Franki Valli’ style moves – all within an all-inclusive space with no pressure. The program runs from 1-2:30pm each Wednesday afternoon at the Cleveland Memorial Hall in Smith Street at a cost of $15. Your first lesson is Free.

Here’s to Life also offer Drumming, Tap Dancing, Jazz with pizazz and Buff Bones programs for those people 40 – 90’s plus years of age and specialise in providing programs for those people living with a physical and or intellectual disability. Redlands Touch Competitions Manager, Kim Spinks, observed that it was a sport that ‘ticked all the boxes’. Touch footy is fun and simple to learn, it’s a great way to improve fitness and has a fantastic social atmosphere. Best of all, games are always played locally for both juniors and seniors, there is no across town travel. The Redlands Touch Clubhouse is also a perfect venue to share some post game laughs and enjoy a drink.

In addition to the vibrant grassroots social touch football competition, Redlands Touch Association has a proud history of high representation in the game at all levels. Redlands’ teams have always performed well on regional and state stages, with Redlands Touch having produced an impressive 48 Australian representative players and 11 international referees. Development pathways are not only in place for the players that want to excel, significant resources are also channelled into ensuring referees and coaches have the opportunity to develop and refine their craft too.

Season one for both juniors and seniors taps off shortly. Grab your workmates, family and friends, form a team and contact Redlands Touch on 3286 5841 or visit redlandstouch.com.au to register and secure your spot.
