“This is a great day for Queensland tourism,” the Treasurer said. “As this Bonza flight takes off this morning, the sound from those engines is Queensland tourism roaring back from the pandemic.

“This is good news for Cairns, for Townsville, for Mackay and Rockhampton and the Whitsundays.

“And it’s especially good news for the Sunshine Coast.”

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said Bonza’s launch was a coup for the “Bonza’s Queensland base opens up a host of new direct services for Sunshine Coast visitors from the southern states,” Mr Skelton said. “For holidaymakers from Albury, Mildura, Tamworth, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie, the Sunshine Coast becomes a sought-after destination.”

Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt congratulated Sunshine Coast Airport on securing Bonza’s Queensland base.

TerryWhite Chemmart® Woodridge

“After a busy holiday season, landing Bonza for the Sunshine Coast is another big vote of confidence in our destination,” Mr Hunt said.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie said, “Bonza’s arrival into the Sunshine Coast is a game changer for our region as we will connect more people to more destinations than ever before.

Hours: Mon-Fri 8.30am - 6pm: Saturday 8.30am-12.30pm 10/99 - 101 Ewing Rd, Woodridge QLD 4114 (Next to Smith Bros Medical Centre and Foodworks)

“It’s a new era for Sunshine Coast Airport as this inaugural service marks the first of 13 destinations Bonza will service directly from the Sunshine Coast, 10 of which have never been previously offered.

“The commencement of Bonza’s services will boost our airport to one of the most domestically connected airports in Queensland, bringing an additional 772,000 seats into the region which is estimated to generate $86 million in domestic visitor spend in the first 12 months of Bonza’s operations.”

ENGAGING SCIENCE GRANTS TO BOOST STEM ACTIVITIES

Community organisations, education professionals, scientists and citizen science groups are invited to apply for grants of up to $20,000 for projects, events and activities that increase participation in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Minister for Environment and Science Meaghan Scanlon said STEM is becoming more important for the community as innovative solutions are being sought for global issues.

“The Queensland Government is committed to increasing participation in STEMbased activities across the state, particularly among First Nations peoples, girls and women and disadvantaged groups so more young people are inspired to follow a STEM career path,” Minister Scanlon said.

“Funding to increase an interest in science is crucial for tomorrow’s workforce so that Queensland’s economy can thrive.

“STEM education isn’t just for school students – it is for our community and the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is helping solve the challenges we face today and in the future.

“STEM participation enhances scientific literacy and critical thinking on an individual level, and in our community.”

Minister Scanlon said the Queensland Government supports scientists, science communicators, teachers, organisations, STEM professionals and community groups to carry out science engagement and communication activities.

“We are funding projects that encourage participation in STEM education, science events and in citizen science, and I encourage interested people, educators and community groups to apply,” she said.

Interim Queensland Chief Scientist Professor Bronwyn Harch said a more diverse STEM workforce will deliver greater benefits for the community so we are eager to tap into regional and remote communities and currently underrepresented groups. “STEM education fosters creativity and critical thinking helping to prepare young people transition into rewarding careers that have a positive impact on society, the environment and the economy,” Professor Harch said.

“Through these grants, the Queensland Government is helping prepare Queenslanders for the future.”

The Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist has awarded over $3.2 million to 232 successful applicants. In the 2022 round, 40 recipients received funding of $660,320. For more information please visit https://www.chiefscientist.qld.gov.au/sciencecomms/engaging-science-grants

New purchase provides more social housing

The Palaszczuk Government has bought a 30-unit property in Clayfield to help house Queenslanders in need.

Communities and Housing Minister Leeanne Enoch said the Clayfield property was vacant and was placed on the open market for sale. The village was previously used to assist aged residents and following refurbishment will provide additional social housing.

“This complex will provide safe, secure and affordable housing for older adults, possibly including those who may be downsizing from larger social homes,” she said.

“The character-filled property is close to public transport and shops and offers ample communal space, outdoor BBQ area with onsite parking.

“Further scoping work will be done to determine the final layout, while maintaining the property’s heritage and character.”

Ms Enoch said the tenants will be people who are tenancy ready.

“We will support the tenants as they transition to their new homes and will consider on-site supports as part of our service delivery model,” she said.

“Our holistic approach means we are not just providing housing assistance, but also connecting people to supports from a range of government and non-government agencies that are specific to their individual needs.

Anyone who needs housing assistance can contact their local Housing Service Centre during business hours or call the 24/7 Homeless Hotline on 1800 474 753.

QUEENSLAND ONE STEP CLOSER TO COMBATTING KNIFE CRIME

As part of the Palaszczuk Government’s ongoing commitment to deliver better services and keep Queenslanders safe, a Bill to expand and extend an Australian-first trial to detect weapons and combat violence will on Monday go to a public hearing.

The important step brings the introduction of the Police Powers and Responsibilities (Jack’s Law) Amendment Bill 2022 one step closer to being legislated.

If passed, the Bill, known as Jack’s Law and named after Jack Beasley - who was tragically fatally stabbed in 2019, will see the Queensland Police Service’s trial of “wanding” powers extended for two years and expanded to all Safe Night Precincts, public transport modes and associated public transport infrastructure. Acting Police Minister Mark Furner said today was a vital step in cementing the important change.

I met with Jack Beasley’s mother, Belinda, and members of the Beasley Foundation just this weekend and I know they want these laws to be statewide too.

The committee is due to table its report in the Legislative Assembly on the 17th of February, 2023
