Logan Comes Together To Celebrate NAIDOC Week Logan’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community joined local and state government representatives at Logan Art Gallery this morning to mark NAIDOC Week.

The Aboriginal, Torres Strait Island and Australian flags were raised at ceremony in front of more than 150 people to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Mayor Pam Parker said NAIDOC Week was an important annual celebration of Logan’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. “NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity to support Logan’s Aboriginal or Islander community and acknowledge those who give selflessly to our city, who excel in business, the arts, sport, education, the community sector or in the service of Australia,� she said.

Islander elders, and in particular Aunty Peggy Tidyman and Aunty Kerry Charlton, for their work to make this year’s NAIDOC flag raising ceremony a special event.

The flag raising event featured speeches from indigenous leaders and videos about the impacts of tourism on Uluru and the history of Aboriginal people who served Australia in the First World War. He encouraged younger people to be receptive to the stories of their heritage and respect the knowledge passed down to them from their elders.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Australian Industry Trade College has today announced it will open a new campus next year in the disused research facility once operated by CSIRO at Toondah Harbour.

The location for Redland’s newest school was selected following comprehensive consultations with Redland City Council, Walker Group Holdings and the wider community.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the former CSIRO research site would provide a perfect short-term location for the college, enabling its students to benefit from the site’s past and future.

“This strategic land was purchased by Council in 2012 after being used by CSIRO as a marine research facility for more than 30 years,” Cr Williams said.

“We purchased it as Council saw its future potential as a vital two hectare piece of Toondah Harbour’s revitalisation.

“Now the land’s six adjacent lots and large commercial buildings will provide a good short-term solution for the Australian Industry Trade College and position it to potentially take advantage of the $1.39 billion redevelopment of Toondah Harbour by Walker Group.

“Council has negotiated this temporary deal with the trade college and Walker Group as the college offers a great service to students in the Redlands.

“Its curriculum offers young people the chance to complete their Certificate of Education while training full time as an apprentice in building and construction, carpentry, automotive mechanics and more.

Caring for our adventurous koalas Compelling love stories are being played out in the suburbs and bush of the Redlands as koala breeding season begins early this year.

With koalas on the move throughout the City as they look for mates, IndigiScape’s Ben McMullen has urged the community to help ensure these love stories don’t have tragic endings.

“Breeding season usually doesn’t begin until August but it appears to be early this year, with wildlife officers and volunteers reporting unusually high numbers of koalas on the move for this time of year, as well as injuries, as they search for mates’’ Mr McMullen, Redland City Council’s Senior Manager Environment and Education, said.

“Young koalas are also looking for new homes, so we need to rally as a community to help ensure their safety by taking extra care on the roads and ensuring our yards are koala friendly and that dogs are kept inside or restrained at night.’’

Mr McMullen said that far too often koala love stories were needlessly ending in tragedy.

“It was distressing last year when the baby of Demelza (pictured), a popular regular at Cleveland’s Kooringa Bushcare site, was the unfortunate victim of a dog attack,’’ he said.Mr McMullen said residents should call the Redlands Wildlife Rescue Service if concerned about a koala’s safety or health.

“Residents should allow healthy koalas to continue on their own accord as sometimes our attempts to help can create confusion and instead lead them into unexpected danger,” he said.

“The service offers around-the-clock assistance and can be contacted on 3833 4031.

“To further assist in koala conservation you can also join your local Bushcare group or one of our habitat protection programs coordinated from Council’s IndigiScapes environmental centre.’’

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the City had teamed up with the GC SUNS to offer residents an incentive to recycle their green waste.

“There are already lots of benefits from using a green waste bin, but if you sign up now, you could win a double pass for the GC SUNS game against the West Coast Eagles on Saturday 1 August,” he said.

“On top of that, one lucky winner will get a double pass to the Inner Sanctum Cage Experience, giving them exclusive access to watch the players prepare ahead of the game.

“Every new green waste bin registration from now to 17 July 2015 goes in the draw to win.”

Mayor Tate said green bins were a cost-effective way to keep gardens and outdoor areas tidy.

“Our green waste bins are available to property owners and tenants from as little as $1 per week and the fortnightly kerbside collection covers most of the Gold Coast,” he said.

“Once collected, the contents are recycled by our contractors into compost and green electricity, diverting green garden waste from landfill and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Green bins take garden prunings, grass clippings, shrubs, weeds and flowers, leaves and loose bark, as well as palm fronds and small branches cut to fit into the bin.

Around 2000 tonnes of garden waste have been diverted from City landfills over the last 12 months, contributing to the City’s goals set out in the draft Solid Waste Strategy 2024.

A Pacific Pines resident has greater access to her local shopping centre, parks and community centre thanks to direct action undertaken by Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate through the recent city-wide budget consultation. “This is a fantastic example how residents have shaped our budget and are shaping our city,’’ said Mayor Tom Tate. “I received direct representation (from resident Gail Harbott) during my city-wide Mayoral Listening Post program that visited 18 locations across the city over four months. “While in Pacific Pines, I heard first-hand from Gail about the wheelchair access issues in this specific location. I immediately arranged for our City Infrastructure area to get on to the job and fix the accessibility issue. Today, we see the results.
