Council to entice sporting elite to the Redlands Redland City Councillors today supported a request from Cr Mark Edwards to encourage athletes and officials from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to visit the Redlands while they are in South East Queensland for the event.

Cr Edwards said the city’s proximity to the venues hosting the Commonwealth Games provided an ideal opportunity to profile the Redlands to an audience who may not otherwise visit the region. “Having international athletes based in our city will also inspire our local kids by exposing them to the Commonwealth Games sporting elite.�

Council to reopen damaged South Gorge stairs Redland City Council has allocated $180,000 to rebuild the popular South Gorge stairs on North Stradbroke Island, which were washed out during heavy rain in January.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the funding allocated during today’s General Meeting was an interim measure while a permanent solution was designed.

“The South Gorge pedestrian walk is a popular attraction for tourists and residents taking in the beautiful Straddie vistas and this funding will allow us to reopen it quickly and safely,” she said.

“Storms in January resulted in larger than usual stormwater runoff eroding the ground under the timber stairs, undermining the integrity of the pedestrian access, so it had to be closed for safety reasons.

“Due to the terrain a long-term solution may be expensive and take time, so today’s decision is important to providing access to residents as soon as possible.”

Division 2 Councillor Craig Ogilvie said the South Gorge pedestrian stairs were popular with wedding parties looking for that perfect photo opportunity.

“Unfortunately bookings at South Gorge had to be cancelled while the stairs were closed because it was just too unsafe, but now we have the green light to repair the stairs and reopen them as soon as practicable and continue looking at a permanent fix,” he said.

“Council has invested about $2 million into this popular walkway, including more than $700,000 last year for stage three and today’s decision continues our commitment to maintaining it for residents and visitors.”

Council had to consider the Coastal Marine protection Act and heritage reserves in planning the project.

New exhibitions at Redland Art Gallery Two new exhibitions at Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland, will showcase Australian culture from different perspectives, with one featuring iconic local island architecture and a second profiling traditional Japanese art techniques inspired by the Australian landscape and way of life.

Straddie Style: Redesigning the beach shack and Wabi Sabi: The beauty of impermanence will be on display from Sunday 23 August to Sunday 4 October 2015.

Redland City Council’s cultural spokesperson Cr Lance Hewlett said it was wonderful to see a fusion of international techniques and quintessential local design concurrently on display in the Redlands.

“Curated by Dr Robert Riddel and Stephanie Lindquist, Straddie Style: Redesigning the beach shack is an evocative exhibition that profiles the unique and distinctive history of beach houses on North Stradbroke Island,” he said.

“From the humble origins of the fibro beach shack in the 1930s to today’s contemporary beach architecture, the exhibition integrates models, photos, sketches and plans to illustrate how each building responds to the challenges of material and spatial constraints of an island location.

The vines are asleep! Winter is vital for vines to have a dormant period and a good cold snap is perfect. The aim for our South East Queensland producers would be for the weather to warm up around early September with bud burst in late September.

Colder climates will have budburst later to take advantage of the later warm sun. Here in our local area, the vines are at their most delicate in the early stages of growth and very susceptible to high heats and

FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL 11 particularly hail / heavy rains. Budburst is when the vines start to flower and the vineyard suddenly goes from barren looking sticks to spots of green sprouting all over.

But before we get to budburst, the viticulturist is busy getting the vines pruned. This is where the canes from the previous vintage are removed and it is done in a very calculated manner. Careful and planned pruning sets the vines up for the next vintage growth.

It is a long and time-consuming job, mostly completed by hand in boutique vineyards on the cold and frosty winter days.

Try to plan a trip to a local vineyard within the next month to see for yourself, take the opportunity to chat to the vineyard workers, and find out how their particular vines are being pruned. Come late September / early October, the vineyards will be coated in light green buds and leaves.

The Awards recognise Scenic Rim businesses and individuals that have achieved outstanding results through initiatives that demonstrate leadership and commitment to business excellence.

Mayor John Brent said Council is again reaching out to the local community to ensure deserving businesses and individuals are recognised for being industry leaders.

“Participating in the Scenic Rim Business Excellence Awards is a prime opportunity for new and existing businesses to profile themselves and their achievements to the local community,” Mayor John Brent said.

“Applications are open across nine categories from business innovation to young apprentice of the year and I encourage applicants to apply for multiple categories where applicable.

“If you or your business, or someone you know who has a business, has achieved success, growth or is a leader in their industry, we want you to nominate.”

Council is hosting the Business Excellence Awards once again in partnership with Scenic Rim’s Chambers of Commerce, representative of the business communities of Beaudesert, Boonah, , Canungra, Kooralbyn and Tamborine Mountain.

Countdown on for pool safety changes Scenic Rim pool owners have just over three months left to ensure their pool complies with mandatory Queensland fencing and safety requirements.

All ☺pools, including spas and some portable pools, need to comply with a ☺ uniform Queensland pool safety standard by 30 November 2015 or earlier if the property is sold or leased.

Mayor John Brent said the single standard would apply to homes with new or existing pools as well as unit complexes and accommodation facilities, replacing the transitional arrangements which have been in effect for five years.

“There has been a five-year phase in period to provide owners of existing pools with sufficient time to upgrade their enclosures, however, the deadline for compliance with the new laws is fast approaching,” Mayor John Brent said.

“We want to ensure all pool owners do the right thing and ensure their PG pool is compliant.

13 “Drowning remains one of the leading causes of death in Queensland for children under the age of five years old.”

A swimming pool is defined as an above or belowground structure principally used for swimming or bathing, including some models of portable pools and spas.

If your portable pool or spa can hold more than 300 millimetres of water, has a volume of more than 2000 litres or has a filtration system, then the new laws may apply to you.

Council gets behind garage sale trail Scenic Rim Regional Council households, schools and community groups are set to join hundreds of thousands of Australians across the country on Saturday 24 October as part of the rapidly growing national community and sustainability event, Garage Sale Trail.

Mayor John Brent has welcomed the involvement of Council and the unique opportunity Garage Sale Trail provides local residents and organisations in the Scenic Rim region.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to participate in an event that combines community and sustainability into a day of fun and creativity while raising money,” Mayor Brent said.

In bringing Garage Sale Trail to its local residents, Council saw an opportunity to deliver a fun, creative and community-driven program for the benefit of residents and local organisations to repurpose their unwanted belongings, live in a more sustainable fashion by reducing waste, connect with their community and raise some money for themselves or others.

“I encourage you to think about those in your community who might benefit from your unwanted items, and likewise what treasures might be out there waiting to be found.”

Residents of properties greater than 1 hectare are eligible for up to 1000 free trees with a choice of over ten species including Bluegums (Eucalyptus tereticornis), Gum-Topped Box (Eucalyptus moluccana), Bottle Brush (Melaleuca viminalis), Mat rush (Lomandra Longifolia), Pink Bloodwood (corymbia intermedia) and many more.

As part of nationwide Seniors Week celebrations, the City of Logan has today hosted its annual Logan Loves Seniors event at the Logan Entertainment Centre.

At the event, local resident Max Noble, who has been president of the Brigalow Country Music Club for 15 years, was also named the 2015 Logan senior ambassador.

Mayor Pam Parker said Max is a fantastic senior ambassador demonstrating an active and positive lifestyle that is admired by his peers and the entire community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Max is not only a great performer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he is a genuinely compassionate person who goes out of his way to help those less fortunate and make life easier for others,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Brigalow Country Music Club is a wonderful asset for our city which under Maxâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership makes a real difference in peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lives and helps them to connect and feel part of a greater community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The group has touched so many lives and really brings the community together through its performances for the elderly, residents in nursing homes, the disabled, indigenous and multi-cultural groups and many others.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Noble was presented the award by Mayor Parker and the 2014 Logan senior ambassador Mary Bickerdike.

Along with naming the new senior ambassador, an estimated 2000 people attended this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event which is designed to recognise and honour the contribution of local seniors.

The free annual event at the Logan Entertainment Centre is now in its seventh year and featured 35 exhibitors offering a range of activities including health checks, Live Well Logan programs and massages. There were also two performances by Hazel Philips (OAM) and Denise Drysdale of their Independent Woman show.

Devon Pixies Tea House Beenleigh Auto Dismantling Devon Pixies, Logan Village has an established following with its Cream Tea’s, High Teas and the lavish Deluxe Tea.
