Straddie Oyster Festival A bumper oyster crop will coincide with this year’s Straddie Oyster Festival, which will be held at the Ron Stark Oval and the North Stradbroke Island Rugby League and Allsports Club on Saturday 18th November.

North Stradbroke Island oyster grower and representative of the Oyster Growers Association, John Richards said moon and tides are vital for producing the best oysters of the year and November is perfect timing.

This is the tenth year in a row the oyster extravaganza will be held at the Straddie Sharks Club at Ron Stark Oval, Dunwich.

A crowd favourite is the oyster eating competition, in which competitors have to eat four oysters and 4 crackers and drink a glass of water.

Council urges Redland residents to ‘get connected’ with neighbours BUYING.

Redland City Council is urging residents to connect with their neighbours to discuss vegetation and property management and for support during disasters.

Redland City Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Karen Williams said Council has been proactive asking residents to help ‘spring clean’ their properties this season.

Cr Williams says it’s also important to check on neighbours’ bushfire and storm season preparations.

Residents can call Council’s Call Centre on 3829 8999 to get the name and contact address of the person who owns the adjoining property.

“We don’t want people being put at risk due to lack of maintenance of surrounding land or residences during a storm or bushfire,” Cr Williams.

To prepare for bushfire and storm season, residents need to get ready in case of an emergency.

Oyster farmers will sell half shell and bottled oysters which may be savoured with a sprinkle of lemon. Kilpatrick and Mornay options will also be available prepared by chef Wayne Nothling and his crew. All scrumptious choices.

This year our Straddie Sharks Cup is searching for the fastest mud crab in town, punters can snap into the festival’s mud crab races and sponsor a crab.

The races are expected to draw the traditional crowd of hundreds waiting to be entertained by sprinting crustaceans and the articulate race calling by Glenn Garrett.

Throughout the day visitors and residents can give a donation to name a muddy and have it entered in one of the races which take place in a two to three-metre wide circular course for the chance of winning prizes.

A variety of stalls will be selling clothing, coee and cakes, Thai goods and various other items. A jumping castle and the laughing clowns will be keeping the kids busy.

Live music will entertain throughout the day.

A special ferry will be organised for Southern Bay Island residents to get to and from the event at $25.00 per person.

The ferries from Cleveland will run as per the timetables and a courtesy bus will also run from the Stradbroke Flyer at One Mile and Stradbroke Ferries water taxis to the Sharks Club at Ron Stark Oval.

Shovels hit ground on the first stage of the Ipswich Motorway upgrade

Works on one of the biggest infrastructure projects in South East Queensland has begun, with the first sod turned on the $400 million Ipswich Motorway project.

The upgrade which will support 470 jobs during construction, means motorists travelling between Brisbane and Ipswich will experience less congestion and safer travel between Granard Road, Rocklea, and the Oxley Road roundabout, Oxley.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher said the Australian Government’s $200 million contribution to the project would create jobs while improving travel times for motorists and boosting productivity for businesses.

“Upgrading this section of the motorway from four to six lanes will improve safety and travel times for over 85,000 motorists, including 12,000 commercial vehicles, who use this stretch of the Ipswich Motorway each and every day,” Mr Fletcher said.

“This is a great example of how the Australian Government’s record $75 billion investment in infrastructure is delivering the roads communities and businesses need to thrive.”

Queensland Premier and Member for Inala Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade was a major infrastructure project that would have wide reaching benefits for Queenslanders.

“The Ipswich Motorway is an important part of our national freight network, linking surrounding areas to Brisbane and the intermodal freight terminal at Acacia Ridge,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“The predicted industrial, commercial and residential growth in the western corridor means we must ensure the motorway meets the increasing traffic demand.”

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister and Member for Yeerongpilly Mark Bailey said the upgrade was evidence of the state and federal governments delivering another important piece of supply chain infrastructure for Queenslanders.

Palaszczuk Government announces new ambulance station at Yarrabilba A new $4 million ambulance station will be built at Yarrabilba to meet the demand of the growing community, the Palaszczuk Government has announced.

Member for Logan Linus Power said he had been talking to Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick about improving services in the area.

“This is a great announcement for the entire Logan Village/Yarrabilba area,” Mr Power said.

“The increased need for services due to the growing community at Yarrabilba puts pressure on the ambulance station at Jimboomba, so this new station will benefit the entire area.”

“We are currently looking to purchase a suitable site in the 2017/18 financial year, with construction to begin in the 2018/19 financial year,” Mr Dick said.

“We know Yarrabilba and surrounding suburbs are rapidly expanding and this announcement today shows this Government is committed to delivering the best care when people find themselves in need of an ambulance.

“Population growth of around 240 per cent is expected in this region by 2036 and we want to ensure the community’s expectations are being met during a medical emergency.”

He said sites in proximity to major arterial roads that allow for future expansion will be considered.

“Officers at our existing stations at Beenleigh, Logan West and Jimboomba do a fantastic job servicing the local community and that high standard of care will be reinforced when the new station becomes operational,” Mr Dick said.

Queensland Ambulance Service Commissioner Russell Bowles said the new station would support coverage in the Logan area and contribute to improving response times across the region.

“We’re planning for Yarrabilba to be a 24-hour station, initially supporting a staff of 17,” Mr Bowles said.

Wellington Point streetscape day: community call for Village Green makeover Community consultation on the revitalisation of the Wellington Point streetscape found the majority of people surveyed in June wanted the underused Village Green revitalised.

Input from hundreds of people showed a desire to revamp the space and provide opportunities for new activities, events, play and fun.

Redland Mayor Karen Williams said the collaboration with the community and the Place Design Group is expected to result in the Village Green becoming the new, accessible heart of Wellington Point Village.

“There’ll be places to sit and relax under timber coastal-style shelters, a children’s playground and a grassed amphitheatre facing a covered stage,” Cr Williams said.

“The semi-circular grassed area could be used for concerts, exercise classes or movie nights as well as reading, relaxing and picnics.”

The design concept includes a new toilet block, new plantings and a multifunctional plaza area which could be used for markets and other events.

Division 1 Councillor Wendy Boglary said she wants to reassure residents there’ll be no overall loss of parking in the Village as a result of the new plan.

“New parking spaces will be provided in Pye Lane before work starts on the Village Green, so there’ll be just as many spots available in the Village as before,” Cr Boglary said.

“Once the new toilet block has been built on the Village Green the old toilet block in Pye Lane is expected to be demolished, creating more parking spaces in the village than at present.”

Cr Boglary said the streetscape consultation day resulted in valuable insights into what the community wants changed on the Village Green People can view the plan and provide further feedback if desired. The second round of feedback closes on 15 November, when the plan will go to into a detailed design phase. This is expected to be finalised in early 2018, with staged construction to begin in mid-2018 (dependant on budget allocation).
