Jamberoo - Minnamurra Rainforest - Gerroa

Blowholes, beaches, waterfalls and a whole lot of action The district stretching from Minnamurra south to Gerroa and west to Jamberoo is filled with natural wonders, a rich history and lots of things to see and do. Kiama The picturesque coastal town of Kiama is famous for its lighthouse and blowholes. Fishing, exploring the rock pools are great free activities, as is swimming or surfing at Minnamurra, Bombo or Black Beach. Kiama’s tree-lined main street has many shops to explore and there are plenty of cafes to enjoy. Why not also explore Kiama’s many historical buildings? There are also several coastal walks available, providing access to key vantage points and significant sites along the coast. Jamberoo In the hills west of Kiama is the small rural village of Jamberoo. Many of the town’s original church, schoolhouse and local pub buildings remain, some dating back 150 years. Jamberoo is the gateway to Minnamurra Rainforest, the last

remnant of the rainforest that once covered most of the area. Amid these tranquil and quaint surrounds is where you will find NSW’s biggest water theme park - Jamberoo Action Park with its heart-stopping water thrill rides and action-packed family fun. Gerringong to Gerroa A picturesque holiday town of Gerringong is nestled between the ocean and flourishing farmlands. It boasts a variety of quality accommodation, shops, boutiques and cafes. One of the South Coast’s largest wineries, Crooked River Winery, overlooks the town. The magnificent views from its tasting rooms serve to enhance the quality of their awardwinning wines. Gerroa offers easy access to several national parks and fine beaches, including Seven Mile Beach, a grand sweep of sand with an extensive dune system. Seven Mile Beach was the launching site for pioneer aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s for his record breaking flight from Australia to New Zealand in 1928. Gerroa is a popular destination for surfers, windsurfers and surf school operators.

Kiama Show - 23 - 24 January 2015 There's excitement plus at the Kiama Show on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 January 2015. Held at the picturesque Kiama Showground, this year's major entertainment includes the Trackskill V8 Ute Show, Full Tilt Horse Jousting, camel races and a rodeo. Experience rural life – watch the judging of prize-winning cattle. Learn the difference between Illawarra, Jersey, Hostein and beef cattle. See the judging of horses and their riders, learn the ins and outs of showjumping, witness the determination and the skills of champion axemen. The pavilion display is the best on the coast with over 2000 fruit and vegetable, cooking, needlecraft, spinning and weaving, sewing and embroidery, handcraft, decorative and floral garden displays, ceramics and porcelain painting, woodcraft, Art, photography and Home Brew exhibits – all in a comfortable air conditioned pavilion where you can also experience cooking and craft demonstrations, a Lego exhibition and gardening tips. Children and adults will enjoy petting calves, piglets, chickens, ducks, lambs, goats, guinea pigs, rabbits and more at the farmyard nursery. And if that isn’t enough be more adventurous and pet native creatures including possums,

crocodiles, bearded dragons, snakes and an owl from Get Wild. Enjoy our community stage, Pet Show and mini horse trots and be amused by the antics of La Petite Grande circus. Be daring and buy a ride in a camel race or enter the rodeo. And if you still want more cheer on the entrants and competitors in the Illawarra Youth Challenge, the mini horse trotting, six bar jump and Kiama Showgirl. Make a bid in the timber auction, climb the rock wall, or have fun on the rides at the carnival. Finally, don’t miss the fireworks finale just before the Kiama Show closes for another year. Exhibit! Compete! Or Spectate! But don’t miss the South Coast Tourism Gold award winning Kiama Show 23 and 24 January 2015. To find out more go to www.kiamashow.com.au

Officially the highest zipline tour in Australia, the Illawarra Fly Zipline Tour involves flying on a series of elevated cable spans and suspension bridges from one platform to another, connected by tree platforms called ‘cloud stations’, and continuously attached to a steel cable suspended up to 35 metres above the forest floor. This exciting adventure is guided by trained and experienced zipline tour guides. Our guides will control all departures and arrivals whilst providing you with an insight into our forest’s history and its features - it’s an experience you won’t forget! Zipping through the treetops with panoramic views out to the Pacific Ocean, visitors will see the trees and forest ecology in a new light and learn about our growing and vibrant forests

while capturing unparalleled views of everything from the forest floor into the canopy and out to the Pacific Ocean. The whole experience can take up to 2.5 hours as it includes the self-guided Treetop Walk for you to enjoy the forest from a different perspective before or after your Zipline Tour. The Treetop Walk is the only walk of its kind in NSW. The 1.5km return walk takes in native rainforest, steel walkways featuring two gently swaying cantilevered arms, and a central tower raised nearly 50 metres from the forest floor. Australia's most beautiful valley Kangaroo Valley, Australia's most beautiful valley, has a rich history. The original inhabitants, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills. Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities. An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across the Kangaroo River with its impressive

22 www.monthlyimag.com.au

castellated sandstone towers. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago. Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks crisscross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Be sure to taste the delicious fudge at Kangaroo Valley Fudge House & Ice Creamery.

What to See & Do

Take in the breathtaking scenery Browse the shops and galleries, or dine in one of the cafes or restaurants. Stay overnight in your choice of great B & B's and country home stays. Step back in time at Pioneer Museum Park - based on a typical 19th centuary farmhouse. Take a self-guided tour of the Hampden Bridge, Australia’s last surviving wooden suspension bridge. Join a canoeing or kayaking safari Taste the delicious fudge at Kangaroo Valley Fudge House and Ice Creamery. Experience the Valley's history at Pioneer Museum The Pioneer Museum Park is a place of learning, relaxation and fun for the whole family. Most of the exhibits can be observed from close range, some items can even be touched, like the hand operated water pump or the wishing well. If you have kids they will love crossing the 72m swinging bridge which leads to two marked bushwalks on more than seven hectares of natural reserve. The museum is open Friday to Monday From 10am to 4pm. Closed on Christmas Day. See ad on page 24.

Bundanon Big Draw - 18 Jan 'A drawing is simply a line going for a walk'. Paul Klee

Arthur Boyd put the Shoalhaven on the international map with his stunning depictions of the river and surrounding bush. His drawings and paintings have inspired generations of artists to visit the Bundanon properties and to create their own interpretations of its wonderful landscape. This year Bundanon Trust is launching the Bundanon Big Draw, following a world-wide trend to encourage the public to put everything else aside and draw for a day. Drawing is an everyday tool kit for communication. There are no physical rules and anyone can do it. Through the act of drawing we learn to look closely at our surroundings and to better understand the world around us. As a creative tool for developing skills of perception, thought, invention and action, drawing assists our brain to learn. Come along with all the family and help create the longest drawing in the Shoalhaven. We will provide all the materials for the big drawing and Bundanon’s artistic staff will be on hand to support your efforts. Or if you want to set up on your own and create an individual artwork, go right ahead! The spirit of the day is to encourage as many people as possible to take a risk and have a go. It is a great activity for all ages and abilities. The Bundanon Big Draw event will happen at Bundanon on Sunday 18 January 2015. The Homestead is open every Sunday, plus Saturdays throughout January. You can also bring a picnic lunch, see Arthur Boyd’s Studio and the Rosemary Laing’s exhibition, The Paper, in the Upstairs Gallery. For more information visit: www.bundanon.com.au
