The cooler weather may still be keeping you out of the water this month, but there is plenty to explore, experience and enjoy ashore in the winter wonderland that is the NSW South Coast. There is still time to catch the magnificent sight of migrating whales as they make their annual pilgrimage north to warmer waters. Head to Booderee National Park with your binoculars to take advantage of the many great vantage points available. While you’re there, take time to explore the many hidden wonders of this amazing national treasure. For some serious outdoor exploring, the South Coast has some picturesque walking trails for all ages and capabilities, along with some fantastic winter 4WD and camping spots where you can enjoy the clear starlit skies beside an open fire. Indoors there is plenty to experience and enjoy too with impressive line-ups of music, comedy, theatre and live

entertainment at Nowra’s Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, Milton Theatre and Shellharbour’s Roo Theatre as well as in pubs and clubs throughout the region. For those with a love of cinema, the Sydney Travelling Film Festival is returning to Husky Pictures this month see page 22 for details. And of course, a month on the South Coast is not complete without the thrill and spectacle of a day at the races. Shoalhaven City Turf Club’s 2014/15 racing season gets underway on Sunday 24 August with the annual Gilmore Race Day. See page 15 for details. As you explore the South Coast, or when planning your next visit or day out, stay up to date with our website at www. southcoastimag.com.au and find us on Twitter and Facebook. See you around the South Coast.

See The Mikado at the Roo Theatre increasingly annoyed at the lack of executions taking place, Ko-Ko makes a deal with Nanki-Poo. He allows Nanki-Poo to marry Yum-Yum for one month, as long as he is executed after that month. Complications arrive This month The Mikado starts at the Roo Theatre on 29 August and will run till 13 September. Nanki-Poo has banished himself from the little town of Titipu because he is hopelessly in love with the beautiful young lady, Yum-Yum. Yum-Yum however, is engaged to her guardian, Ko-Ko. Upon learning that Ko-Ko has been condemned to death for the crime of flirting, Nanki-Poo returns to Titipu to claim Yum-Yum’s hand. After an odd turn of events, it turns out that Ko-Ko has not only been reprieved of his death sentence, but has earned a promotion to the post of Lord High Executioner. Unfortunately, he is not a big fan of killing people. With the Mikado of Japan becoming

Send Dad flying this Father’s Day Has your Dad ever dreamed of becoming a pilot? With Father’s Day fast approaching you can make your Dad’s dream come true with a NSW Air Trial Instructional Flight. NSW Air, the South Coast’s premier pilot training organisation, provides introductory flights to those seeking adventure. Trial flights or TIF’s are similar to the first lesson received by trainee pilots. You sit in the command seat, taxi out to the runway and take off and manoeuvre the aircraft in the sky, making turns, climbing and descending, all under the

watchful eye of a qualified instructor. Trial Instructional Flights are conducted daily from Illawarra Regional Airport. If your Dad is less daring, NSW Air offers joy flights where you can relax and take in the view while your pilot does all the

work. Either way Dad will enjoy a great experience and be talking about this Father’s Day for years to come. Book or purchase your gift voucher by calling NSW Air on 4256 1001 or visiting www.nswair.com.au

With around 50 conserves, chutneys, marmalades, pickles, relishes, sauces and more South Coast Providores has something for every palate. But despite the diverse flavours, all their products have one common ingredient: passion. The passion for quality fresh food that drove owners Carole Ruta and Ian Gray to open South Coast Providores now drives them to apply traditional French methods to make conserves in small batches using fresh seasonal produce, keeping the fruit as whole as possible to ensure the integrity of the fruit and flavour.

ranging from locations as far-reaching as Canada, India, Italy, Japan, United States, United Kingdom and Palestine, South Coast film buffs will be spoilt for choice when it comes to world-class cinema over the festival weekend. Officially opening the Travelling Film Festival in Huskisson will be a special homegrown feature by legendary filmmaker Rolf De Heer (Ten Canoes, The Tracker) called Charlie’s Country. De Heer’s third collaboration with the mesmerizing David Gulpilil, Charlie’s Country tells the story of Blackfella Charlie who is getting older and feeling at odds with the white policing laws in his remote Arnhem land community and decides to try living life the old way. Opening night ticket holders can toast the weekend ahead with complimentary drinks after the film. Full programming details and ticket information can be found at: www.sff.org.au/public/travelling-filmfestival/tff-locations/huskisson/

Booderee National Park: explore, experience and enjoy Are you looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city? Want to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of nature during your South Coast visit? Then spend some time exploring, experiencing and enjoying Booderee National Park. Booderee Botanic Gardens Booderee Botanic Gardens offer a peaceful setting to enjoy. Australia’s only Aboriginal owned botanic garden covers 80 hectares of Booderee National Park and includes a cultivated area surrounded by natural bushland. Relax on grassed lawns to enjoy a picnic or use the picnic tables and electric BBQs provided. There are several well-formed walking trails to explore in the gardens, including the accessible boardwalk. For a longer walk, combine the botanic garden nature walks with other paths GS

to form 3.7km loop walk around the gardens. Take the opportunity to learn about the region’s fascinating plants including how they have been, and continue to be, used by Koori people. You can also take one of the Koori led tours and other tours available during school holidays and on request (depending on staff availability). Bookings are essential.

Bird Watching Booderee National Park abounds in bird life with over 200 species and a variety of habitats. Many are residents, others are travellers passing through and some are of special significance to the park’s traditional owners. The best time for bird watching is early in the morning. Being quiet and patient is the key to success - you may well hear a bird before you see it. You can download the Booderee Birds iPhone App or see many images, species descriptions and other information at www.booderee.gov.au Please don’t feed birds in Booderee. Wild birds find their own natural foods and eating other things can make them sick and dependent on people for food. So relax and unwind as you explore, experience and enjoy the peaceful surrounds of nature at Booderee National Park.

What we do for fun craft exhibition Come to the inaugural ‘What We Do For Fun’ exhibition at the Lady Denman Maritime Museum. The exhibition is a collection of creative, crafty and artistic works from individuals and groups showcasing what they do for fun! Works on display and for sale will include tapestry, crochet, quilting, embroidery and woodwork. In conjunction with Shoalhaven City Council Waste Minimisation Services, part of the ‘What We Do For Fun’ exhibition will showcase some of the Shoalhaven landscapes of artist Samuel Elyard interpreted in recycled textiles. This inventive project, created by

Shoalhaven City Council Waste Services, highlights the concern around the 1000 tonnes of textiles disposed of each year in the Shoalhaven. The members of the St Georges Basin Creative Craft Group and the G6 group of artists have worked on interpreting a number of landscapes which are part of the Lady Denman collection. The exhibition runs till 28 September at the Lady Denman Maritime Museum in Huskisson. For more information visit www.ladydenman.asn.au
