June is the South Coast’s month of festivals, feasting and fun with lots to enjoy for all ages, tastes and interests. The biennial seechange Winter Arts Festival that began last month in Jervis Bay continues until the close of the June long weekend, showcasing impressive work by local artists, writers, musicians and performers (p22). This June long weekend will be filled with festivities as 11 South Coast wineries throw open their cellar doors for the 2014 Shoalhaven Coast Winter Wine Festival so you can sample local wines, together with exquisite culinary delights from local produce and local chefs. But don’t let the taste buds rest there; the South Coast’s only independent micro brewery, HopDog BeerWorks, is opening its tasting room for extended hours this June long weekend. See pages 8-10 for event details and check out our Foodies and Farm Trail and Wineries feature on pages 28-31 and our Dining Guide

on page 4 for more taste tantalising opportunities. For outdoors and sports lovers, why not help save lives while enjoying one of the South Coast’s most picturesque courses at the Troy Pocock Meningococcal Golf Day? (See p19). For more picturesque outdoor experiences, visit Shoalhaven Zoo, take to the trees with Trees Adventure (p15) or become a skywalker with Illawarra Fly’s winter 2 for 1 deal (p6). As always there’s plenty of live entertainment to enjoy in venues throughout the region, including shows for kids at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, an impressive line up of musicians coming to the Milton Theatre and some great stage drama at Shellharbour’s Roo Theatre. What a month to enjoy! See you around the South Coast.

Bomaderry - Burrier - Pyree - Greenwell Point - Culburra - Currarong - Callala - Myola Nowra, loacated on the beautiful Shoalhaven River, offers fishing, boating and river cruises. Nowra has a number of historic buildings and heritage walks. Information can be picked up from the local visitors centre. Along with the district’s many wonderful natural attractions, Bundanon, the rural property of the late Arthur Boyd, is one of the cultural delights of Nowra. Other attractions include the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Meroogal, an authentic 19th century gothic-style house.

Coastal Towns Pyree is home to the historic Jindyandy Mill—a place where past and present come together in beautiful surroundings—and the renowned Butterfactory Restaurant.

Culburra’s great surf beaches are popular as is sailing and windsurfing on the adjacent Lake Wollumboola. The walk around the headland provides impressive views over Crookhaven Bight. Greenwell Point is famous for worldclass fresh oysters, fish and other seafood. Recreational activities include fishing, swimming and boating. For tranquillity with exceptional views of Jervis Bay, look no further than Callala Bay, Callala Beach and Myola. Explore the pristine waters by boat or fish off the pier and observe the sea life below. Kayak the backwaters of Wowly and Callala Creeks, enjoy the safe shallows of the Callala Creek estuary or head to the Callala Country Club for golf or lawn bowls. The coastal village of Currarong offers excellent rock fishing and swimming spots. Enjoy fish and chips at the local takeaway or a picnic in the park.

Enjoy a golf game with a difference! How much more would you enjoy your golf game if you could help save lives at the same time? Well, now you can, by playing in the Troy Pocock Meningococcal Foundation Golf Day at the picturesque Nowra Golf Club on Sunday 15 June 2014. The golf day is increasing awareness of the dangers of Meningococcal disease and raising much-needed funds for the Troy Pocock Meningococcal Foundation, established in memory of Nowra man Troy Pocock who died of the disease in 2001, shortly after his 21st birthday. Meningococcal disease is relatively rare but life-threatening, potentially causing death within hours if not recognised and treated promptly. Affecting around 700 Australians annually, most sufferers fully recover but 5-10% die and 20% experience permanent disabilities. Although babies and children are most at risk, the disease also affects adults and several lifestyle factors heighten the risk. Prominent Australian Clinical Microbiologist Dr Clayton Golledge said: “I’ve seen cases where someone has been well at breakfast – and dead by dinner. “About three quarters of all deaths could have been prevented with earlier recognition and treatment,” he said.

Larraine Pocock, mother of the late Troy Pocock, says educating the community to aid early recognition and treatment is at the core of the foundation’s purpose. “By playing in our golf day you will help us save lives by raising much needed funds we can use to educate people and support victims and their families,” Larraine said. For a golf game you’ll feel good about regardless of your score, register for the Troy Pocock Golf Day by contacting Nowra Golf Club on 4421 2249 or 0412 669 875.

There is still time to enjoy the 2014 seechange Winter Arts Festival. Hosted by Jervis Bay and Basin Arts Inc, the Festival runs until 9 June and features the rich talents of over 100 visual artists, writers, musicians, dancers, as well as circus and street performers. The Festival explores the full breadth of artistic expression, from traditional to contemporary. The theme for this festival is “Connecting and Collaborating” and there will be plenty of opportunities for Festival goers to make and perform art in various ways. With 55 or more events there are more than enough exciting exhibitions, workshops, performances and activities to satisfy the appetite of all art lovers. Local cafes will become galleries, parks will turn into creative art and performance spaces, and community venues will be host to choirs and bands of all sorts. The Lady Denman Museum will be a major venue for several events. Some highlights: there’s ‘Synergy’ a collaborative art competition held at the Lady Denman Heritage Complex. Plus, ‘Coming Home’ which features the best and brightest of the Bay and Basin’s young people, coming

home to present their achievements to the community. And there’s, ‘Art InThe Park’; an all-day event at White Sands Park where local artists will be demonstrating their skills and inviting you to have a go too! On stage in the park will be some of the best local bands and musicians. Book lovers have a whole weekend set aside, ‘WildAboutWords’ … and if this means you, there’ll be well-known authors to meet, plus local writers to share stories with, PLUS a Trivia Night, PLUS a good old game of scrabble. 2014 ‘seechange’ Co-ordinator Jenny Robertson is promising the biggest festival JBBArts has ever hosted and one where the whole community can join in and have fun. “But keep some energy in reserve for the closing ceremony, a spectacle of light, sound, shape and colour… don’t miss it!” she says. Festival Partron, Richard Morecroft says the biennial Festival has become an institution celebrating all things creative. “It’s a wonderful month – and whether you’re a local or a visitor, I urge you to sample as much as you can – and enjoy seechange 2014!” For details of the full program visit www.seechangefestival.org.au
