November

Contents

November marks the start of run up to the end of the year. The weather warms, the Melbourne Cup is on, summer is approaching and Christmas preparations gather pace. It’s the perfect month to spend time with family and friends before the pre-Christmas rush takes hold and the South Coast offers plenty of opportunities for that. If you haven’t yet decided how you’ll be enjoying the Melbourne Cup on 4 November, head to Nowra’s Archer Racecourse where the Shoalhaven City Turf Club will have a jumbo sized screen erected. The annual community day at the historic Jindyandy Mill in Pyree, east of Nowra, is on Saturday 22 November with plenty of fun for kids and great shopping for adults. See page 18. There will be another family fun day on Saturday 6 December at the Lady Denman Heritage Complex at

Huskisson to raise money to help special needs students at Ulladulla’s Budawang School. See page 24. There’s plenty of live theatre to enjoy around the region this month, with Annie at Shellharbour’s Roo Theatre, The Wizard of Oz at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, Female of the Species at Nowra Players and the Australian comedy Summer Wonderland at Milton Theatre. See page 2. For short family getaways during November, we’ve got you covered with articles about camping in Booderee National Park and great places to stay south of Ulladulla. With so much beauty to explore, now is the time to enjoy it before the Christmas/New Year crowds arrive! Don’t forget to stay in touch with us at www.southcoastimag.com.au as well as via Facebook and Twitter. See you around the South Coast.

The Roo Theatre Company proudly presents the all time family favourite, Annie in November. Abused by a cruel orphanage matron, Annie, a spunky, redheaded orphan, decides to run away and find her parents. After eventually managing to escape the orphanage, she sadly is caught and sent back by Officer Ward of the NYPD. Soon though, her luck improves. Billionaire Oliver Warbucks decides to invite an orphan over to his house for Christmas and Annie is chosen. The two quickly hit it off and he agrees to help Annie find her parents by putting up a $50,000

reward. Miss Hannigan’s brother, Rooster, and his girlfriend, Lily, pretend to be Annie’s parents by using information provided by Miss Hannigan. At the last minute, President Roosevelt intervenes to announce that the FBI has discovered that Annie’s parents are in fact, dead. In the end, Hannigan, Rooster, and Lily are all arrested and Annie is adopted by Warbucks. For performance times or to secure your tickets, call 42972891, or book online at www.roo-theatre.com.au

The five days of Christmas...Berry style Beautiful Berry is renowned for its fabulous shopping and gourmet eateries. In early December Berry will be buzzing with festive fun for all ages, with its five day Berry Merry Christmas festival. Starting on Wednesday 3rd December with a ‘Santa Dash’ down Berry’s main street to raise funds for the local preschool, don’t miss the hilarious sight of the locals dressed up as Santas, elves and reindeer, racing from the Great Southern Hotel to the Berry Hotel. This is followed by the Grand Santa Parade - kids will love seeing Santa in his sleigh and they can even meet Santa afterwards and have a photograph taken with him. On Thursday’s “Meet and Eat Night” local eateries will put on festive specials, meals and competitions, inviting people to meet and eat with friends before the rush of the silly season is upon us. At Coolangatta Estate on Friday 5th from 6pm, guests are invited to the Inaugural Berry POP Christmas Party, where they can ride a Segway prior to dinner and entertainment if they wish. On the weekend of the 6th and 7th, there are some major new events for Berry Merry Christmas! The Inaugural Berry POP - Pop Culture Event is a fun event on both Saturday and Sunday where attendees may dress

as their favourite super heroes and villains, TV and anime characters to enjoy a variety of stalls and displays, “Cosplay” competitions (costumed theatrics) and other activities. The fun kicks off at Albert Street Car Park and the Berry School of Arts from 10am both days. The Christmas Local Food & Arts Market in Apex Park on Saturday, 12-6pm, organised by the team behind the everpopular Berry monthly market. If you have a pet, don’t forget to bring them along all dressed up in their Christmas finery for a chance to meet James and Anthony, stars of the recent Foxtel series, Village Vets Australia, who will be judging a Village Pet Show at 2-4pm. The regular Berry market will also be on Sunday 7th December. Get all your Christmas shopping out of the way in Berry’s stylish boutiques, quality toy shops and the two markets. With our heritage buildings, beautiful festive decorations, music, and the best cafes on the South Coast, make your Christmas shopping a pleasure, not a chore. Shops will have extended opening hours from 3rd-7th December. See www.berrymerrychristmas.org.au for all the details.

The Wizard of Oz is coming to the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre Why not bring the whole family to see the all time classic, The Wizard of Oz at the Shoalhaven Entertaiment Centre this month. The musical, presented by the Albatross Musical Theatre Company, runs from Friday November 14 till Sunday November 23. It’s a classic tale of fantasy starting in the American mid-west and transporting to the mythical and enchanted world of OZ. Oz is populated with Munchkins, witches and a host of lovable, as well as a fair few, creepy creatures. Here is a show for both the young and the young at heart who appreciate a bit of magic and imagination in stage productions. It is a musical closely based on the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland. Real flying witches and pyrotechnics are a bit new for Albatross Musical Theatre Company but rest assured it will greatly add to the spectacle. One way or the other! Don’t miss it! Albatross Musical Theatre Company isa community theatre company and has recently produced highly successful productions of Chicago, Swing Fusion, Beauty and the Beast, The Boy From Oz and more. For further information or to purchase tickets to The Wizard of Oz contact the Box Office: 1300788503 or shoalhavenentertainment.com.au

Jervis Bay

Sussex Inlet

An impressive series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state. Many of its beaches including Hyams Beach offer crystal clear water against pure white sand.

The ultimate destination for avid boaters and surfers with a great network of waterways that lead to the sea. The Inlet itself is the waterway that snakes inland from the ocean to St Georges Basin. The town offers fantastic accommodation, hire boats to explore the canals, extensive cycleways, clubs, shops, cafes and a cinema.

Booderee camping... a “phenomenal experience” The weather is warming up, days are getting longer and the water’s more inviting – all the perfect ingredients for an unforgettable camping holiday in the beautiful natural surroundings of Booderee National Park. Located on the shores of pristine Jervis Bay, Booderee National Park offers three well maintained camping grounds at Green Patch, Bristol Point and Cave Beach. All sites are unpowered, offering a genuine wilderness camping experience, but with a few conveniences to make your stay more comfortable. Here’s how Mark from Sydney described his Booderee National Park camping experience: “Our camping experience was phenomenal... the site was immaculate and incredibly well kept including safety, the trees had suspect branches removed... the amenities were modern and well maintained, we saw all manner

of Australian wildlife... the beach was beautiful and the bush was amazing. “As an Aussie, it was the best Australian experience I have ever had in a campground, and more than any international visitor could ask for to give them a taste of Australia and good things to say about this country when they get home”, he said. The sites are perfectly located for playing on the beaches, exploring natural flora and fauna on the many walking tracks, enjoying lunch at one of several picnic areas or catching a glimpse of migrating Humpbacks or Southern Right Whales from Cape St George Lighthouse. Bookings are essential to secure these picturesque sites, and can be made up to four months in advance.

Weekend sites at Green Patch and Bristol Point are usually fully booked up to a month in advance during the warmer months of October through to May. Sites at Cave Beach are set in a grass area behind the beach, but you will need to carry your camping gear the 300 metres from the car park to your site. Currently, during the peak Christmas/ New Year school holiday period, campsites at Green Patch and Bristol Point are allocated via ballot. Coming soon! Online campsite bookings. Check our website for details. Visit www.booderee.gov.au, email booderee.mail@environment.gov.au or call the Visitor Centre on 4443 0977 between 9am and 4pm daily for more information about camp site bookings, park fees, attractions and facilities.

With the silly season creeping up fast, theatre goers will be in for an Aussie Christmas treat when Summer Wonderland dazzles in November. The Milton Follies community theatre group will present the award winning play by Matthew Ryan at the historic Milton Theatre over six nights from November 7 - 16. Director K-M Doyle fell in love with the production when she saw the premiere in Brisbane at La Boîte Theatre in 2007. Featuring nine well known local players, the adults show is expected to be another sell-out success for the Follies. The hilarious play examines family relationships, loneliness, love, self confidence and battles with neighbours, all through the context of a Christmas lights competition in a typical suburban Aussie cul-de-sac. “Presenting a contemporary Australian play may be something new for Follies and I’m looking forward to challenging audiences and actors, and presenting something new, exciting and hilarious,” K-M said. Tickets for Summer Wonderland are $25 and available from Country Leather in Milton. For show updates and to meet the cast, search ‘Milton Follies’ on Facebook.
