From the Editor According to the latest U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders report from the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) while April saw a decline in orders from the previous month, compared to the same time last year, there was an increase of 72 percent. Thus far, even with a continued return to normalcy, total orders have reached a 40 percent increase compared to orders placed within the first four months of 2020, with a total of $1.57 billion spent on technology orders for the manufacturing industry. Douglas K. Woods, president of AMT, has described orders near the level that was seen back in 2018, and a resurgence of multi-machine orders at that. “Parts that would normally go to job shops are now being produced in-house by larger manufacturers with the means to increase their production capacity,” Woods says. “This is not to say production is shifting away from job shops; they are still operating at near capacity and increasing machine orders month over month, but increased consumer demand has necessitated more capacity, and confidence in the sustainability of that demand has justified the capital expenditure by large OEMs.” Both large and small manufacturers are seeing the need to grow and invest in the technology that is going to help meet their customer’s needs, which in most cases, had not ceased for many - even with the overall impact of various shutdowns in 2020. The report also indicated that the latest open houses for machine builders and manufacturing technology providers have had better than expected attendance. This overall confidence for in-person visits is another boost in terms of sales and even regular maintenance. SME just weeks ago announced the return of FABTECH to the halls of McCormick Place in Chicago this fall. But let’s keep in mind, it’s not just a return to normalcy that we need to be concerned with. The pivot towards digital means for connecting with companies and sourcing parts, products, and equipment in response to last year continues to provide options for business owners from the comfort of their own office or home. This quarter, Alibaba.com shares their insights on the importance of digital trade shows, and information on why Alibaba.com continues to grow as a source for B2B professionals worldwide. I think a hybrid model of in-person and digital shows will continue to be the norm for some time to come, and why not? What other time has there been when so many of us can keep in touch and find the solutions we are looking for anywhere in the world, and typically in real time? There’s no reason to think that the road to recovery will lead us to where we’ve already been. Until next time,

Robots for Rent Robotics as a Service (Raas) Market to Gain due to Adoption of Operational Intelligence and Data Analytics

G

lobal Robotics as a Service (RaaS) Market is projected to grow significantly owing to the high cost of deployment of robots. Deployment of robots requires huge initial one-time payment due to the equipment cost that comprises expensive sensors and software. Numerous end-users are adopting robotics as a service (RaaS) over deployment of robots due to the costly training of specialists. It encompasses maintenance charges in terms of upgrades, electricity, and servicing. The cost involved in the deployment of robots is one of the major reasons for the substantial growth of robotics as a service (RaaS) market. Robotics as a service (RaaS) is essentially a business model that allows end users to use specialized service robots and pay for the proficient services on hourly or monthly basis. This motivates the end users to adopt robotics services through the RaaS model. Besides the robotics services, the end users can also take advantage of technologies like cloud computing to improve their contributions via services like real-time robot monitoring. Robotics is widely used technology till date and have spread their spectrum in various industries and applications worldwide. From retailing to manufacturing and healthcare, robots perform almost every human activity competently with remarkable efficiency and speed. Spurring growth is observed in could-based storage, artificial intelligence, and computing. Owing to this growth, robots-as-a-service business models are attaining lot of traction globally, which ultimately stimulates robotics

as a service (RaaS) market. Robots as a service model offers largely customized business solutions that differ from customer to customer with numerous options and tasks. Their services are greatly reliant on high capacity and low-latency computing surrounding. Most manufacturing industries require heavy operational tasks in plants, warehouses, and distributional centers for robotics. RaaS involves a business model in which professional service robots are rented or leased on a monthly or hourly basis, along with upgradation, maintenance, and other basic services to end-users. Apart from renting the robots, vendors also leverage technologies such as cloud computing to enhance their offerings through services, such as real-time remote monitoring of robots. ■ GERMANY

A lot can go wrong when lifting heavy loads. If the suspension ring doesn't align into the direction of the force immediately, it can get stuck and has to withstand high transverse loads. If the lift ring then aligns suddenly, it may cause damage to the load, to lifting gear and the crane system. The RUD ACP-TURNADO is the world's first smart lifting point. Thanks to its unique spring mechanism, it doesn't jerk to a stop and therefore sudden kinking is impossible. What comes along: it offers significantly higher working load (WLL) capacities than other centric lifting points of a comparable size. Thanks to the RUD ICE-BOLT tech nology and to the optimized design, its bending resistance is unrivaled. The new RUD ACP-TURNADO: Lifting reinvented.

Reduce Waste and Recycle Seco Tools Details How Data Matrix Codes Revolutionize Product Information Flow

W

hen Jan Gravningsbråten came up with an idea for how to reduce waste in the tool production process, little did he realize the potential effect it could have on the Seco business. Several years later, his idea has the ability to track ten billion tools that in turn can generate huge amount of insight into how our products are used. Back in 2018 Jan, who is an R&D technician in the Innovation Lab in Fagersta, noticed that when faults occurred in the production process, it was impossible to identify the individual tools that were affected as each tool was only identifiable by a batch number. “You could have 10,000 or 20,000 in a batch and it was impossible to work out which ones might have been affected by a production fault, so we’d have to start all over again. That’s not really economically viable,” Jan says.

Individually Identifiable The challenge was to find a way to make each tool individually identifiable, and that’s when the lightbulb went on for him – data

10  |  IMD  |  Q2 2021

matrix codes, which are similar to QR (quick response) codes. “We have chosen a series of ten billion numbers for our codes, and we can fully trace each tool marked with them using software where we collect all the codes from the machines that produce the tools,” Jan explains. Originally invented in 1987, data matrix codes are two-dimensional codes often used to track objects in industrial processes. The codes are put on each Turbo 16 tool, one of the most popular tools in the Seco Tools range, using a laser-printing process. Putting data matrix codes on each tool deployed out in the field will in the future allow both customers and Seco Tools to track it through its working life. The codes are also compatible with the Seco Assistant, an app which contains a wealth of useful information for clients and that allows them to make calculations and scan their tools directly to find out more about them. “Ideally, clients would input data about how they use the tool into the system – what machine they use, when it is installed, how long it is used for and for what purpose. Scanning

the codes on the tool would then bring up all that data, which basically is the life story of the tool,” says Micael Baudin, specialist in digitalization at Seco Tools.

Laser-Printed Codes Together with Jan and a small team, they found a way to use lasers to print the codes on tools. “The vision is to be able to support the customer if there is a problem using the tool in certain ways – we can see what it has been used for in the past and based on that we can try to find a solution to their issue, no matter where they are in the world,” says Jan Gravningsbråten. Data collected from these tools can then be fed back into the R&D process, improving the next generation of products. “If the data matrix codes are still readable they can be used to sort products that are returned to us, which makes the process of recycling much easier. We will be able to sort the different metal compounds quickly so that we can re-use as much of them as possible, which is a real plus when it comes to our sustainability work,” Jan continues. “So far, we have used the idea with one product, and we are ironing out the teething problems, but ideally we would like to see a situation where customers agree when buying products from us that they will return them to us at the end of their useful lives. When they do so, we can scan these codes and see what has happened to them in their lifetime,” Micael Baudin says. For Jan Gravningsbråten, the biggest benefit is to be found in the sustainability aspect of the project. “Imagine if we could say to a customer that they had to send the tools back to us when they were finished with them – there might even be a situation in the future where they are not allowed to simply dump old tools and that they are required to recycle them. “There are a lot of benefits, being able to help customers immediately, but the automizing the recycling process and being able to sort different metals and coatings using this data matrix could quickly change things for the better,” Jan says.

12  |  IMD  |  Q2 2021

Digital Solutions The use of the data matrix codes has huge potential in terms of transforming how Seco Tools does business. “I see many opportunities based on this technology for future digital solutions, solving pain points and increasing productivity, both in Seco Tools as well as at our customers,” says Thomas Norström, Senior R&D Manager. “To make our products smarter by connecting information to each individual item throughout the whole product life cycle will make a difference - our smart products will be able to answer questions like who are you, where do you come from, how should I use you and how have you been used.”

The use cases on the data matrix technology will be part of a bigger initiative called Seco Beyond Hardware, and Thomas will step out of his present role as Senior R&D Manager and step into a role as program manager for Seco Beyond Hardware. “I am really excited about this, to be able to follow and support all these exciting solutions all the way, from ideas to products implemented internally or at our end customers, will be very enjoyable,” he says.

Recycling Is Key to An Ambitious Target For Circular Economy Seco Tools is uniquely placed to make a strong contribution to the circular economy, which prioritizes separating economic activity from the consumption of finite resources and designing ways to remove waste from our system of economic activity. Though it is by no means the only aspect, recycling plays a vital role in the circular economy by asking us to look at how we use the earth’s scarce and finite resources, and what can be done to ensure that we extract maximum value and usage from them. Recycling will play a key role in reaching Seco Tools ambitious goal of being 90% circular by the year 2030, with a number of broad changes to processes and business models leading the way. “It’s a challenging target, but we see this as very important for our company and our business,” says Ted Forslund, Sustainability & Audit Coordinator at Seco Tools. “What is good for Seco Tools is that we already have very good recycling processes, so now it’s about creating a good partnership with our clients so that they understand the value of us buying back tools, so that it becomes a closed circle where nothing goes to waste.” Globally, only 8.6% of the resources we use are recycled, which means that over 90% of everything is used once and then disposed of. Due to the nature of the business of Seco Tools, the company is in a strong position to change that paradigm by buying back tools that have reached the end of their productive lives and recycling or repurposing them into new tools. “If we increase that kind of trade where we buy back old and get customers to understand the advantages of it, we can reduce the climate impact as we won’t need to use new materials and metals. It’s a win-win in many ways,” says Ted Forslund. There is an ever-growing awareness of environmental concerns, and suppliers and customers are keen to see initiatives that address them. “This has proved very positive so far with customers. They know that the tools we produce using recycled materials are of the same very high standard, that there is no drop-off in quality. There is now also a market for the buy-back of tools that have reached the end of their useful lives, and that is a positive thing for them too. It’s about getting this into our business relationships in a positive way,” Ted Forslund explains. In a circular economy recycling is very important, but it is also the last thing we should do after we reduce, repair and reuse. “This is one important component, but there are other aspects to the circular economy, and we have to look at them all. One of those is the lifecycle of our products – how can we design them so that they last a little longer, and that they can be recycled when they do reach the end of their useful lives? How can we produce them using

14  |  IMD  |  Q2 2021

renewable energy and sustainable supply chains? The essence of the circular economy is preserving the value that we have already created,” says Ted Forslund. Recycling helps in terms of minimizing waste, but it is far from the only way to do so. There is a wide range of areas that can be analyzed with a view to stopping the “leakage” of valuable resources – delivery chain logistics, sorting, warehousing, risk management, power generation, and even molecular biology and polymer chemistry. Cost-efficient and better-quality collection and treatment systems and effective segmentation of end-of-life products will enable Seco Tools to support the economics of circular design. One of the main problems in addressing issues to do with the environment and climate change has been the sheer scale of the task, but Ted Forslund believes that the Seco Tools goal of 90% circular by 2030 is attainable. “It is essential to work with our suppliers and customers in order to take on the global challenge. If we do, we can create more value with less waste within a safe operating space for our planet—again, it’s a win-win situation,” he concludes.

Enhancing Cobot Capabilities

Universal Robots Unveils Enhanced UR10e with 25% Greater Payload and Hirebotics Provides A Complete And Ready To Go Right Out Of The Box Cobot Welder

U

niversal Robots (UR) is launching an enhanced UR10e with an increased payload of 12.5 kilogram (27.55 pounds), creating new possibilities for applications such as palletizing, machine tending, and packaging. The robot’s price remains unchanged. “Universal Robots is committed to continuous improvement based on meaningful conversations with customers and our ability to address critical market opportunities. Our customers have already deployed UR cobots on a wide variety of palletizing applications. Over time, they have identified opportunities to utilize our UR10e cobot in handling tasks with heavier items,” says Kim Povlsen, President of Universal Robots. “In response to this demand, we have enhanced the UR10e to support greater payloads, providing customers with exciting new deployment capabilities.”

16  |  IMD  |  Q2 2021

The enhanced UR10e retains the small footprint, intuitive programming experience, uncompromising repeatability, commitment to quality, and trusted performance that Universal Robots customers have come to expect, but its increased payload capacity means that users can now do more: » The UR10e can now be used in palletizing applications with cartons weighing up to 10kg and a 2.5kg gripper. » The UR10e is now more versatile for other material handling tasks, too, such as loading and unloading heavier workpieces in machine tending deployments and packaging of heavy items. » The enhanced UR10e’s greater payload takes more weight from the hands and shoulders of humans, leading to improved ergonomics and working conditions. With overexertion and repetitive motion accounting for an estimated 24% and 8% of

workplace injuries respectively in the U.S. alone, this provides significant relief to human workers. “Humans are not designed to lift heavy goods repeatedly, but our cobots handle these tasks with ease. By taking over unergonomic activities, UR cobots boost productivity, improve product quality, and help businesses rethink how to best use the creative and problemsolving abilities of their workforce –all while keeping people safe,” says Kim Povlsen. Feedback from UR partners has been extremely positive; MBO Postpress Solutions in Germany has integrated the UR10e as part of its CoBo-Stack stacking cobot. “Increasing the payload of the UR10e will make our MBO CoBo-Stack much more profitable for our customers by expanding their application possibilities to include larger packages and heavier products, such as perfect bound or saddle stitched catalogues and brochures,” says Sebastian König, head of research and development at MBO Postpress Solutions GmbH. In addition, the updated UR10e also provides plug-and-play compatibility with products from Universal Robots’ UR+ ecosystem of hardware and software peripherals, ensuring that users can quickly and easily get started with collaborative applications. Nicolas Lauzier, Senior Product Manager at Robotiq comments: “The greater payload of UR10e makes a big difference to palletizing applications by enabling users to handle loads up to 12.5kg in weight. Alibaba.com

The Industrial Machinery Industry is Pivoting with Platforms like Alibaba.com B2B ecommerce is giving industry access to global premium suppliers online to make sourcing more efficient through events like the Alibaba.com Online Trade Show | Summer edition

T

he global machinery industry—spanning food and beverage manufacturing machinery to plastics machinery—was hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and is likely to see lasting changes. Severe supply chain interruptions and manufacturing delays have led to difficulty sourcing inputs. Even so, the industry is expected to grow from $535 billion globally in 2020 up to $794 billion in 2025, as companies adapt their operations to a post-pandemic world by making changes like adopting automation and the industrial internet of things (IIoT) and focusing on B2B ecommerce. There will be certain lasting changes in the industrial machinery industry to mitigate future supply chain disruptions and adapt to a digital-first approach. Building a flexible and efficient supply chain will be a top priority for manufacturers to avoid future severe disruptions. What happens next for businesses that suddenly found themselves surging and for those that are in recovery will depend on how fully and rapidly they embrace B2B ecommerce and digital channels.

How the B2B Ecommerce Boom has Changed the Game Once nice to have, ecommerce is now a must-have, offering businesses access to more markets and global supply, greater operational flexibility, and the resilience to survive and thrive during challenging times. Traditionally, B2B companies have relied on building their supplier relationships face-to-face at trade shows and in factories and offices. With travel and in-person meetings restricted because of the pandemic last year, buyers and sellers were forced to tap into the value of digital tools. Now, 93% of U.S. companies are doing some portion of their B2B business online, and 43% are using ecommerce, according to an Alibaba.com study. Digital capabilities made all the difference for many businesses last year, serving as a lifeline to rapidly adapt to new and unprecedented social distancing norms. Choosing the “right” drill normally means a tool that perform for longer and produce better quality holes, particularly in tough materials.

The Right Way to Diversify Manufacturers need the right tools and calculations to embrace new revenue streams By: James Thorpe, Product Manager at Sandvik Coromant

T

here will be a “next normal” for manufacturers in the wake of COVID-19 — that’s according to a report published by McKinsey & Company. With losses of revenue in some sectors while others experience unexpected spikes in demand, the crisis is forcing manufacturers to diversify. McKinsey & Company’s COVID-19: Briefing note report predicts manufacturers can expect “lasting shifts in customer markets” and that resilience will be needed if manufacturers are to “to navigate an economically and socially viable path.” In other words, they must diversify to survive.

22  |  IMD  |  Q2 2021

Fortunately, today’s engineers are well-versed in mixed production, and most have evolved far beyond the low-tech stereotype of “Fred in his tool shed”. That said, diversifying production is not without it challenges. Choosing the right tooling solution is essential for facilitating changes in production. This is particularly essential for engineers that work with tough materials like duplex stainless steels, Inconel or heat resistant super alloys (HRSAs) and companies that work with multi-materials. Operations like this require optimized tools with carefully calculated cutting data. Drilling tools are a prime example. Drill

IMD – The Industry’s Most Extensive Industrial Publication

penetration rates can typically vary from 50 to 1000 millimeters-perminute. For these tools, precise calculations are vital for avoiding poor tool life and, at worst, causing premature tool failures. Put simply, if component material is changing, then drilling cutting data will have to change.

A Tool For All Materials What do we mean when we say “the right” tool? With drills, this normally refers to tools that perform for longer and produce better quality holes, particularly in tough materials, like Inconel. Sandvik Coromant has developed a range of CoroDrill® 860 solid carbide drills with optimized geometries suited for different applications that involve tough, difficult materials as well as malleable, abrasive, and soft materials typically found in the ISO-K and ISO-N families. The range includes the CoroDrill 860-GM with enhanced -GM geometry, optimized for multi-materials and applications. Other tools in the range, like the CD860-PM, are optimised for drilling ISO-P steels. The CD860-SM is optimized for ISO-S materials for aerospace parts manufacturing. The CD860-GM is particularly useful for general engineering with mixed-materials, where productivity is important and engineers seek to diversify their production. The CD860-GM’s innovative, polished flute design improves the evacuation of chips and yields greater hole quality. It is made from a unique fine-grained carbide substrate that increases hardness while maintaining toughness. In addition, the drill is tip-coated with a multi-layer physical vapor deposition (PVD) thin film coating, which is key to improving the drill’s productivity and tool life. This was put to the test by an automotive engineering company in South Korea. The company used the CD860-GM to machine a transmission connector in ISO-P material, then compared its performance with a competitor’s drill on the same component. The cutting data used was a cutting speed (Vc) of 100 m/min, a cutting feed (Fn) of 0.21 mm/rev and a drilling depth of 10 mm. In the end, the customer reported a 1,150% increase in tool life with the CD860-GM.

Going Online Productivity advantages, like those demonstrated in South Korea, could be crucial in helping manufacturers to diversify their production while remaining competitive. But, just as important are the cutting data calculations that must be optimized for any given application. However, determining this for a new product may require expert opinion. With the travel restrictions of COVID-19, it’s unlikely that a tool specialist can come and visit your premises. So, how can today’s

engineers not only calculate the best values, but also marry these to the best-recommended drill for the job? What’s more, how can this be done quickly and accurately to maintain production uptime against today’s diversification challenges? The answer lies in online software. To choose the right tool and cutting data for new or existing applications, Sandvik Coromant have developed the CoroPlus® Tool Guide. The Tool Guide not only selects the correct tool, it provides cutting data and anticipated tool life for the specific application The ability to make such important decisions, in relation to tooling and its calculations, is vital if manufacturers are to diversify and do so effectively. What’s more, the ability to access this guidance online could be crucial for engineers adapting to the circumstances of COVID-19. Combined with optimised tools like the CoroDrill 860 range, the challenges of what McKinsey & Company calls the “next normal” could also be a time of opportunity for manufacturers and engineers.

Sandvik Coromant’s CD860-GM solid carbide drill is useful for general engineering with mixedmaterials in diversified production setups.

A New Solution For Machining Automation Sandvik Coromant has announced the release of a machine integrated version of the award-winning Silent Tools™ Plus. The launch coincides with the release of CoroPlus® Connected, a solution to establish connectivity between machine tools and cutting tools. In combination, the products will enable conditional automation for internal boring applications, forming the basis of the future of automated machining. CoroPlus® Connected is used alongside the existing Silent Tools™ Plus, a digitally connected damped boring bar from Sandvik Coromant. Having been awarded first place in the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) Production Innovation contest in 2018, Silent Tools™ Plus helps customers by providing visibility at the cutting zone in internal turning applications with long overhang. Silent Tools™ Plus uses a connected turning adaptor and sensors to monitor load, vibration, deflection, surface finish, temperature and in-cut detection in turning applications. The product was brought to market to overcome the challenge of operator-blindness in internal turning. As an operator has no visuals of the process in question, it was previously extremely difficult to identify potential problems until turning was complete. For industries boring large components, such as aerospace and oil and gas errors can result in significant costs, waste, downtime, and delays. By streaming data directly to a dashboard, Silent Tools™ Plus provides operators with ‘eyes’ at the cutting zone, creating an opportunity to identify problems, such as excessive deflection, vibration or set up problems, before issues escalate and manufacturers are forced to scrap expensive components. The newly launched machine integrated version, with CoroPlus® Connected, allows the invaluable data generated at the cutting zone to result in automated cutting actions — removing the need for operators to monitor the machine dashboard for entire processes. “Using the system, an operator simply needs to set the desired load, vibration and temperature limits, either through the software dashboard, or directly in the NC code,” explained Thomas A Nilsson,

24  |  IMD  |  Q2 2021

Product Manager at Sandvik Coromant. “From here, the conditional automation will protect the process, and reactions are initiated according to the set limits. This increases the process security, avoiding rework and scrap, while allowing the operator to focus on higher value work.” “Launching a machine integrated version is an exciting development of Silent Tools™ Plus,” added Mattias Tjomsland, Software Product Manager. “The tool has long been used to improve decision making in internal turning processes, delivering information and security to otherwise process-blind operators. In combination with CoroPlus® Connected, Silent Tools™ Plus will provide monitoring that, for the first time, can trigger automated mitigating actions when problems and deviations are detected. This will be a game changer for improving component quality and overall efficiency.”

Brad Bucholtz, the company Quality Technician, explained Strohwig’s mission as, “The design, manufacture and repair of medium to large forging dies, plastic injection molds and metal die casts, as well as the manufacture of custom contract parts and/ or components.” They machine a variety of steel (H-13, stainless steel, castings, forgings) and aluminum components. The company serves various markets including aerospace, automotive, mining, defense, building assembly, oil and gas, energy, marine, etc. This is why they decided to use Exact Metrology equipment for their inspection needs. Brad said they’ve worked with Exact Metrology for over ten years. Initially, the company provided metrology services. He added that before 2010, there was no need for metrology as company employees manually inspected jobs that needed it. Working with Exact Metrology, Strohwig bought a Hexagon Romer Arm in

In a short video, Brad Bucholoz, Strohwig Quality Technician, describes Strohwig as company in business for 43 years that specializes in plastics and die cast molds and large contract machining parts. Tasked to test for compliance vs. non-compliance of a forged part by a Midwestern metal forging customer, Bucholoz highlighted that Strohwig uses the same hardware and software as their customer to communicate more accurately with them. This included the use of PolyWorks|Inspector™ Leica Absolute Tracker AT960MR and the Hexagon Romer Arm. The Absolute Tracker was used in conjunction with the Leica Absolute Scanner LAS-XL and T-probe. Bucholoz mentioned that Exact President, Dean Solberg and the Exact team have always been to help and that he sees this relationship continuing into the foreseeable future.

2016 and Leica Tracker in 2019. When the Romer RS6 scanner was released, Exact Metrology offered a trade in on the older Romer arm. The productivity increase was so great it was easy to justify the investment of the new arm/scanner. This equipment came in handy when Strohwig received a request from a major Midwestern forge that has a long-standing relationship with them. This metal forging company in Illinois has a 126-year history and specializes in open die forging and rolled ring forging. The company was using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) but needed to upgrade their equipment. A new job required Leica Absolute Tracker precise measurability of a large forged part with complex geometry. Dean Solberg, Exact Metrology co-president suggested that they invest in scanning technology. Thus, the company purchased a Leica tracker, as well as PolyWorks software. Leica Absolute Tracker AT960 features an all-in-one integrated design, single-box probing system and smart connectivity. Additional features include continuous measurement, entry-level probing with T-probe and 2 Handheld laser scanners. One is an 8-inch line scan and another is a 24-inch line scan to capture huge amounts of data quickly. The System is IP54 Certified for protection against dust and other contaminants. PolyWorks|Inspector™ was used to verify the quality of the part through the use of high-density point clouds and contact-probe datasets. The scan was performed in a working environment, not a traditional lab, which meant that personnel were doing this while forging occurred. In the past, Strohwig machined various parts for them. Now, this forge had Strohwig test for compliance vs. non-compliance in one of their forged parts. To do this, Strohwig used the Hexagon Romer Arm and the Leica Absolute Tracker. The portable measuring arms allowed company personnel the flexibility to measure on the machine shop or the floor. It featured no honing procedures, simplicity of operation and reliable 3D measurements. The Absolute Arm 7-axis delivers tactile probing and laser scanning in a uniquely ergonomic package. Once this was completed, they used PolyWorks|Inspector™ to verify the quality of the part by using a color map. In the future, the company is looking to purchase additional Exact Metrology products.

Strohwig was able to coordinate with the company as they use common platforms to communicate and shared daily emails and PowerPoint presentations with their results. Brad Bucholtz used data mergers to combine the Romer and Leica data sets into one report. Since using Exact Metrology, Brad said, “We are able to provide detailed reports to our customers. Also, we’re able to perform in-process inspections to validate specific processes.” He further commented that Exact Metrology allowed them to supply a superior product and their deliverable to the customer has greatly improved. When referring to the benefits of working with Exact Metrology, Brad noted, “Training only goes so far. After initial training, there are many stumbles and Exact is always there to make sure we get the knowledge we need. Onsite or offsite, they go above and beyond the call to make sure we can provide our customers with the data they need.”

The PL190 and PL320 robots can be floor-mounted, and brakes are included on all axes. Installation is quick and efficient. A single cable is all that is needed to connect the manipulator to the controller, resulting in easy setup and reduced expenses for maintenance and spare parts inventory. Airlines and cables are routed internally from the base to the end-of-arm tool to maximize reliability, and a cable installation tube facilitates fieldbus routing to the upper arm and/or gripper.  » For more information, visit www.motoman.com
