The name Ancala is created from two Spanish words: “Ancá”, a Cádiz expression meaning “To the house of”, and “cala”, evoking the charm of a house by the sea (the word literally translates as cove).

The concept of Ancala is based around two key types of ingredients: prime local Andalucian produce, such as Iberian pork, seafood including large prawns and the tenderest Almadraba tuna, and fabulous fruit and vegetables – big, juicy tomatoes, sun-ripened avocadoes and mangoes. The other element of Ancala’s unique culinary offering is Nikkei cuisine: a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian, with raw elements, strong flavours (and colours), tangy citrus, and cilantro; expect elements from sushi like nori and aji (yellow pepper), typical in Peruvian ceviche, and Andean potatoes.

The ambience at Ancala is cosy and informal, but there is a rich history behind each individual dish on the menu. Andalucian cuisine is world renowned, so we are selecting from our cupboard of authentic gastronomic delights and adding a special twist that further enhances the flavours and gives you an even more satisfying and delectable dining experience. The three main elements of Ancala’s menu are rice dishes, Josper® (wood-fired oven) and Nikkei.

El nombre de Ancala nace a partir de las palabras “Ancá” la expresión gaditana que significa ‘A casa de’ y “cala” que evoca al encanto de una casa a pie de playa.

El concepto de Ancala se basa en dos tipos de ingredientes clave: productos locales andaluces de primera calidad, como el cerdo ibérico, mariscos, incluyendo gambones y el más tierno atún de Almadraba, fabulosas frutas y verduras, tomates jugosos, aguacates y mangos madurados al sol. El otro elemento de la propuesta culinaria única de Ancala es la cocina Nikkei: una fusión japonesa y peruana, con elementos crudos, sabores (y colores) fuertes, cítricos y cilantro; espere elementos del sushi como el nori y el ají (pimiento amarillo), típico en el ceviche peruano, y papas andinas.

El ambiente en Ancala es acogedor e informal, pero hay una rica historia detrás de cada plato del menú.

La cocina andaluza es reconocida mundialmente, por lo que seleccionamos de nuestro repertorio, delicias gastronómicas auténticas y les añadimos un toque especial que realza aún más los sabores y le ofrece una experiencia culinaria aún más satisfactoria y deliciosa. Los tres elementos principales del menú de Ancala son el arroz, el Josper® (horno de leña) y la cocina Nikkei.

CHIRINGA, SUMMER DELIGHTS

The name is inspired by the Cuban word chiringa, which refers to the colourful kites that can often be seen on the beaches along the coast. The name also recalls the Chiringuito concept, the informal beach restaurants that can be found along the Spanish coast. After a morning of sunbathing and swimming, they are many people’s lunch venue of choice. And so, it is here at La Reserva Club – stretch out on your sunbed for the morning or afternoon, play a round of golf or game of tennis, or take a paddleboard and explore the sport lagoon, and then gently stroll to Chiringa to continue the southern Spanish vibe, slipping seamlessly into the vibrant, casual ambience of Chiringa. Sip an innovative cocktail and sup on a delicious dish that brings the welcoming spirit of la costa.

And the afternoon continues at Après Beach. From 15 June to 15 September every Wednesday and Friday, Sotogrande will welcome Après Beach, with DJ sets, special events, and the sophisticated, stylish atmosphere you expect at La Reserva and Sotogrande.

CHIRINGA, DELICIAS DE VERANO

El nombre se inspira en la palabra cubana “chiringa,” que se refiere a las coloridas cometas que a menudo se ven en las playas. El nombre también evoca el concepto de “Chiringuito,” los informales restaurantes de playa que se encuentran a lo largo de la costa española. Después de una mañana de tomar el sol y nadar, es el lugar de almuerzo preferido. This Michelin-starred chef of Quatre Molins in Tarragona will bring his creative flair to The Beach. From 5:30pm to 9pm, Catalan chef Rafael Muria will present four exquisite tapas: langoustine ravioli with foie gras and black truffle sauce, carabinero with potato parmentier, hot wagyu ceviche with spicy corn ice cream, Balfegó tuna galette ingot with hazelnuts and Mediterranean vegetables. This magical setting ensures that your experience at The Beach, from the drinks and dishes to music and natural surroundings, combine to live up to Sotogrande’s lofty standards for elegant, discreet exclusivity.

El chef con estrella Michelin de Quatre Molins en Tarragona traerá su toque creativo a The Beach. Experience a day in the life of Andalucía’s sherry capital, a city brimming with raw energy, and the quintessential cultural icons of Southern Spain, embracing exquisite horsemanship, remarkable artisans, as well as tantalising food and wine, and of course the captivating art of flamenco.

Experimenta un día en la capital andaluza del vino Jerez, una ciudad rebosante de iconos culturales y de pureza, que abarca desde el distinguido arte ecuestre, los notables artesanos, así como exquisita comida y vino, y por supuesto, el cautivador arte del flamenco.

In little less than an hour from the manicured landscapes of Sotogrande, one arrives in the extraordinary Andalucian city of Jerez de la Frontera. Within moments one is immersed within a unique ungentrified urban setting, a special place where the diverse community, from old-school aristocrats to bohemian flamenco ‘gypsies’.

My guide in this incomparable city is Iván, who through his travel company, has been sharing with visitors from Sotogrande and beyond, his unique and privileged insights into Jerez de la Frontera.

‘Jerez has retained its authenticity, its local character. This is a city where you can still live, work, and socialise in the historic centre’ ‘Remarkably, it remains largely unaffected by gentrification and mass tourism’.

‘There’s a fantastic city market where regional foods are sold to locals by locals at local prices – something we used to take for granted but has been lost in many European cities now dominated by tourism.’

Visiting Jerez is an opportunity to feel connected to the real Andalucía, to taste cuisine that keeps alive time-honoured recipes, to savour the unique regional wines and lose oneself to the rhythm and emotion of flamenco.

A menos de una hora de Sotogrande, se llega a la extraordinaria ciudad andaluza de Jerez de la Frontera. En cuestión de un momento, uno se sumerge en un entorno urbano único y sin gentrificar, un lugar especial donde conviven diversas comunidades, desde aristócratas de la vieja escuela hasta los gitanos más bohemios.

Mi guía en esta incomparable ciudad es Iván, quien, a través de su empresa de viajes, ha estado compartiendo con visitantes de Sotogrande y alrededores sus perspectivas únicas y privilegiadas sobre Jerez de la Frontera.

“Jerez ha conservado su autenticidad, su carácter local. Esta es una ciudad donde todavía puedes vivir, trabajar y socializar en el centro histórico.”

“Es notable que se mantenga en gran medida sin ser afectada por la gentrificación y el turismo masivo.”

‘Flamenco has its origins in Andalucía, but its appeal is universal’ explains Domingo Ortega, one of Andalucia’s gifted flamenco dancers, who is also a choreographer and artistic director in Jerez de la Frontera. ‘Andalucians have suffered oppression historically and flamenco represents a desire for liberty, the hunger for freedom. People connect with that’ adds Domingo. He adds, ‘The artform is continuing to evolve, to attract new artists and new followers. In Jerez, the younger generation see flamenco as current, as ‘cool,’ not just a tradition.’ To experience a flamenco show is a requisite when visiting Jerez.

So too, is to try the sherry wines. Once dismissed as old fashioned, these crafted wines are also experiencing a renaissance. ‘There’s an exciting revival of all things local’ explains Jerez expert and Spain travel designer Iván Ricoy. He continues,

‘Jerez has wisely maintained its local taverns, the tabanco sherry bars that offer visitors an immersive experience in local culture.’

After a strong cortado coffee upon arrival, take a morning stroll through the old town past evocative crumbling mansion houses and explore the bodega wineries. The smaller producers offer a more intimate tasting experience, like Bodegas Tradición, that not only showcases 20- and 30-year aged wines, the highest categories within the JerezXérès-Sherry Denomination of Origin, but also has a fascinating historical archive and remarkable art collection.

“El flamenco tiene sus orígenes en Andalucía, pero su atractivo es universal”, explica Domingo Ortega, uno de los talentosos bailaores de flamenco de Andalucía, quien también es coreógrafo y director artístico en Jerez de la Frontera. “Los andaluces han sufrido opresión históricamente y el flamenco representa un deseo de liberación, el hambre de libertad. La gente conecta con eso”, añade Domingo. Además, comenta: “La forma de arte sigue evolucionando, atrayendo a nuevos artistas y seguidores. En Jerez, la generación más joven ve el flamenco como algo actual, ‘cool’, no solo una tradición”. Experimentar un espectáculo de flamenco es imprescindible cuando se visita Jerez.

Lo mismo ocurre con probar los vinos de Jerez. Una vez desestimados como anticuados, estos vinos artesanales también están experimentando un renacimiento. “Hay un emocionante resurgimiento de todo lo local”, explica Iván, experto en Jerez y organizador de viajes por España.

“Jerez ha sabido mantener sus tabernas locales, los tabancos, que ofrecen a los visitantes una experiencia inmersiva en la cultura local”.

Después de un intenso café cortado al llegar, da un paseo matutino por el casco antiguo, pasando por evocadores palacetes clásicos y explora las bodegas de vino. Los pequeños productores ofrecen una experiencia de cata más íntima, como Bodegas Tradición, que no solo exhibe vinos de 20 y 30 años, las categorías más altas dentro de la Denominación de Origen Jerez-Xérès-Sherry, sino que también cuenta con un fascinante archivo histórico y una notable colección de arte.

Then it’s time to eat. Try Tabanco Las Banderillas ‘for exceptional food, wine and service’ confirms Iván. Jerez is a city for relishing the local gastronomy of sea food, and local country dishes like Ajo Caliente, a delicious mix of breadcrumbs with peppers, garlic, tomatoes, and olive oil, as well as chicharrones, made with tasty pork pancetta, prepared with herbs and spices. This city offers the most tantalising snack foods you can imagine, each perfect with a chilled glass of local Sherry, like an aromatic glass of Oloroso or a chilled glass of Fino. After your day in Jerez, one becomes a convert to sherry, guaranteed. ‘Simply put, sherry makes food taste better’ exclaims Iván enthusiastically.

Late afternoon is the ideal time for a little retail therapy. Head to the emblematic central street of Calle Cuatro Juanes, and seek out the artisan shoemaker Abraham Zambrana. The boutique is a jewel, a sparkling treasure of creativity where designer Zambrana, who learnt his trade in the world of Jerez’s saddlery at the Royal Equestrian School, showcases his extraordinary designs, inspired by his travels and studies in shoemaking across France, England, Germany, and Italy. In fact, The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation is one of the internationally renowned attractions of Jerez, and the dancing horses embody the refined culture of pure-bred horses, and equestrian pursuits of Southern Spain.

Luego es hora de comer. Prueba el Tabanco Las Banderillas “por su excepcional comida, vino y servicio”, confirma Iván. Jerez es una ciudad para deleitarse con la gastronomía local de mariscos y platos campestres como el Ajo Caliente, una deliciosa mezcla de pan rallado con pimientos, ajo, tomates y aceite de oliva, así como los chicharrones, hechos con sabrosa panceta de cerdo, preparada con hierbas y especias. Esta ciudad ofrece los bocados más tentadores que puedas imaginar, cada uno perfecto con una copa fría de Jerez, una aromática copa de Oloroso o una copa fría de Fino. Al final del día, te convertirás en un amante del Jerez, garantizado. “Simplemente, el Jerez hace que la comida sepa mejor”, exclama Iván con entusiasmo.

La tarde es el momento ideal para un poco de compras. Dirígete a la emblemática calle central de Calle Cuatro Juanes y busca al zapatero artesano Abraham Zambrana. La boutique es una joya, un tesoro resplandeciente de creatividad donde el diseñador Zambrana, quien aprendió su oficio en el mundo de la guarnicionería de Jerez en la Real Escuela Ecuestre, exhibe sus extraordinarios diseños, inspirados en sus viajes por Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania e Italia y su conocimiento en zapatería. De hecho, la Fundación Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre es una de las atracciones internacionalmente reconocidas de Jerez, donde la danza de los caballos encarna la refinada cultura de los pura-raza y las actividades ecuestres del sur de España.

Fine tailoring is found at Sastrería Mera, another classic Jerez store, while Iván also recommends paying a visit to Sombreros Antonio García. ‘This quirky hat store is another place that captures the elegance, heritage and style of Jerez, the perfect place to pick up a lasting souvenir that you will enjoy for decades to come, making for an unforgettable day that will forge memories that will last a lifetime.’

Your cultural immersion continues with a visit to Mala Música, a record shop in Calle Medina, the sort of store that takes one back to a nostalgic, golden era before online retail and global brands.

As a well-deserved reward for a day of exploring, indulge with a tapa or two, accompanied by a flamenco performance. Few places will delight as much as Tabanco el Pasaje, in Calle Santa María. Open since the 1920s, it’s renowned for its live flamenco entertainment at 2pm, 7.30pm and again at 9.30pm, as well as its selection of sherries from Bodegas el Maestro Sierra. If you want to continue in a bohemian vibe, head to Tabanco la Pandilla in Valientes street, a huge Jerez bodega building that resonates with a great choice of music chosen by the owners and managers Bosco and Antonio.

Jerez- Xérès-Sherry

Andalucía’s emblematic sherry wines are named after Xéres, the ancient name for the city of Jerez de la Frontera, which together with neighbouring towns of El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, are home to historic bodegas. Many of these sherry wineries are open to the public, offering tours as well as tastings. One can also enjoy these wines in a truly authentic environment, often straight from a barrel, in the sherry taverns or ‘tabancos’ thought to have taken their name from the combination of the Spanish words ‘estanco’ (a wine store) and ‘tabaco’. Don’t miss the Jerez wine tasting at La Reserva Club on September 12, hosted by Bodegas Tradición.

Fran Silvestre goes further in the most distinguished area of Sotogrande, not only in terms of indigenous landscaping with low water impact, but with a combined system of water generation for domestic use, rainwater harvesting and reuse of grey water for irrigation.

In this interview, we delve into the story of Fran Silvestre, unravelling the inspirations and aspirations that fuel his boundless passion for architectural excellence.

Sotogrande Life: You have competed projects all over the world from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to Beijing in China. How do you feel about returning to a project closer to home in Sotogrande?

Fran: We love building in Spain, especially because we can attend site visits more regularly. Technology has helped us a lot as we have taken on projects further afield, but we always like to have the buildings close by too.

S.L: Your luxury villa projects are clearly influenced by nature, lots of space, inside-outside living. Can you explain this from an architectural point of view?

Fran: It is true that we draw much inspiration from the geometries of nature that we see all around us. Ultimately, originality comes from returning to the origin and the best designer is always nature. For us, spaciousness is the ultimate luxury and we aim to enhance both indoor and outdoor living spaces, something which is particularly important in a country like Spain.

Fran: Es cierto que nos interesan mucho las geometrías que se inspiran en la naturaleza. Al final la originalidad es volver al origen y el mejor diseñador es siempre la naturaleza. La espacialidad para nosotros es el gran lujo y la vida interior y exterior, sobre todo en un país como España, es algo que nos gusta potenciar.

S.L: Congratulations on your next project here in Sotogrande, Villa Noon. The design concept is interconnecting circles, clearly striking and unusual. Why this approach?

Fran: Well, the property is a tiered villa, built into the hillside, and for this reason we did not want it to have a strong impact on the surrounding landscape. We wanted to design a geometry that moved away from the surrounding architectures by being more connected to the world of nature and the natural environment. Indeed, this is where the property’s materiality and geometry are drawn from. The use of circular shapes also served another purpose, in that it enabled us to orientate the house towards the views that interest us. In this way, it acts as something of a pivot such that each piece can be oriented in the best direction.

S.L: What is more important for modern architecture: functionality or aesthetics?

Fran: In the studio, a foundational premise is the search for effective beauty. This means that each design must not only be aesthetically appealing and inspiring but also functional in practical terms. Striking the balance between beauty and efficiency is essential in our constructions.

S.L: Enhorabuena por tu próximo proyecto aquí en Sotogrande, Villa Noon. El concepto del diseño son círculos interconectados, claramente llamativo y poco común, ¿por qué esta decisión?

Fran: Bueno, en realidad lo que sucede es que es una villa descendente en la que no queríamos generar un fuerte impacto en el propio paisaje y quisimos diseñar una geometría que se alejara un poco de las arquitecturas colindantes, que estuviera más relacionada con el mundo de la naturaleza y el entorno natural. De hecho, de ahí su materialidad y de ahí su geometría. El uso de las formas circulares también tenía otra cuestión, que es el de poder enfocar las casas hacia las vistas que nos interesan. De esta forma, funciona como una especie de rótula y cada una de las piezas se puede orientar en la dirección correspondiente.

S.L: ¿Qué es más importante para la arquitectura moderna: funcionalidad o estética?

Fran En el estudio intentamos siempre tener como premisa la búsqueda de la belleza eficaz. Esto implica que cada diseño no solo debe ser estéticamente atractivo y motivador, sino que también debe funcionar de manera impecable en términos prácticos. Este equilibrio entre la belleza y la eficacia es indispensable en nuestras construcciones.

S.L: What will be the main benefits of living in Villa Noon and how does it differ from other projects in Sotogrande?

Fran: Villa Noon stands out in Sotogrande for its focus on sustainability and efficient resource management, especially water. It offers advanced systems for water generation, collection and reuse, along with xeriscaping that utilizes native plants and permeable surfaces to improve water management and thermal insulation as we have discussed. These features, combined with an architectural design that promotes well-being and a connection with nature, make Villa Noon a residence that combines modern comfort with respect for the environment, setting it apart from other projects in the area.

S.L: On that point, Villa Noon is also the first to be committed to ‘Zero Consumption’. Can you explain this?

Fran: Yes, Villa Noon will be the first “Zero House”. A “Zero House” is a home that does not need to connect to conventional utility networks thanks to advanced technologies, such as an air conditioning system that uses condensation to obtain fresh water. This cutting-edge approach ensures efficient usage of natural resources, minimizing the environmental impact.

In landscape architecture, various strategies can be implemented, including planting native and drought-resistant plants, grouping vegetation according to their water needs, and applying mulch to regulate soil temperature and reduce evaporation. Additionally, efficient irrigation systems can be installed. Tanks can be used to collect rainwater and permeable surfaces and green roofs can be integrated.

This revolutionary design, which ensures maximum efficiency in its usage of natural resources and a minimal ecological footprint, meets the stringent criteria of a Passive House, standing out for its ability to operate completely self-sufficiently, independent of conventional utility networks thanks to its exceptional energy efficiency.

S.L: ¿Cuáles serán los principales beneficios de vivir en Villa Noon y en qué se diferencia de otros proyectos en Sotogrande?

Fran: Villa Noon se diferencia en Sotogrande por su enfoque en la sostenibilidad y la eficiencia en el manejo de recursos, especialmente el agua. Ofrece avanzados sistemas de generación, recolección y reutilización de agua, junto con una xerojardinería que utiliza plantas nativas y superficies permeables para mejorar la gestión del agua y el aislamiento térmico tal y como hemos comentado. Estas características, sumadas a un diseño arquitectónico que promueve el bienestar y la conexión con la naturaleza, hacen de Villa Noon una opción residencial que combina confort moderno con respeto ambiental, diferenciándola de otros proyectos en la zona.

S.L: En ese sentido, Villa Noon está también comprometida en ser la primera ‘Consumo Cero’, ¿puedes explicarlo?

Fran: Será la primera “Casa Zero”. La “Casa Zero” se caracteriza por ser una vivienda que no necesita conectarse a la red de servicios convencionales gracias a tecnologías avanzadas, por ejemplo, un sistema de aire acondicionado con condensación para la obtención de agua dulce. Este enfoque vanguardista no solo garantiza una gestión eficiente de los recursos naturales, sino que también minimiza el impacto ambiental.

En la arquitectura del paisaje, por ejemplo, se pueden implementar diversas estrategias, como el uso de plantas nativas y resistentes a la sequía, la agrupación de vegetación según sus necesidades de agua, y la aplicación de mulching para regular la temperatura del suelo y reducir la evaporación. S.L: Your studio is based in Valencia and has now grown to a compliment of fifty staff. How has life changed for you compared to ten years ago?

Fran: It has been a process of constant learning and adaptation. This evolution has involved a greater degree of commitment and responsibility, but it has also brought considerable satisfaction. On a personal level, these changes have meant balancing the growth of the team while staying close to the creative core of each project, always striving to ensure that each project reflects the identity and values of the studio.

S.L: What is the most challenging aspect of your profession?

Fran: We believe that resistance to change is significant. This resistance affects not only our ideas but also ourselves and all individuals involved in the process. This is where dialogue becomes even more crucial. The projects we undertake are a constant back-and-forth journey where corrections to the direction of the project are always present. Being able to assimilate and incorporate these changes as just another tool in our work enables us to precisely meet the challenges we face and derive satisfaction from our work as architects.

S.L: What are the most important qualities an architect should have?

Fran: The essential qualities of an architect derive from an approach based on a commitment to respond technically to specific contexts and to seek lasting beauty in their work. This process involves the complete satisfaction of all participants, from clients to collaborators. It emphasizes continuity with the environment, the optimization of materials and the integration of innovative technologies that enhance the living experience. Precision at all phases of the project and a constant dialogue are crucial to ensure that each space faithfully reflects the identity of its users. Design excellence depends on a collaborative and dedicated team that works together to foster creativity and constant motivation.

S.L: Tu estudio se encuentra en Valencia y ahora cuenta con un equipo de cincuenta personas, ¿cómo ha cambiado tu vida en estos últimos diez años?

Fran: La verdad es que ha sido un proceso de constante aprendizaje y adaptación. Esta evolución ha implicado un mayor grado de compromiso y responsabilidad, pero también ha traído satisfacciones inmensas. A nivel personal, estos cambios han significado un equilibrio entre crecer como equipo y mantenernos cercanos al núcleo creativo de cada proyecto, intentando siempre asegurar que cada obra refleje la identidad y los valores del estudio.

S.L: ¿Cuál es el mayor reto de tu profesión?

Fran: Creemos que la resistencia al cambio. Esta resistencia ejerce su fuerza sobre nuestras ideas, pero también sobre nosotros mismos y de todas las personas que intervienen en el proceso. Es ahí donde el diálogo cobra un sentido todavía más importante. Los proyectos que realizamos son un constante viaje de ida y vuelta donde el cambio de rumbo está siempre presente. Ser capaces de asimilar e incorporar estos cambios como una herramienta de trabajo más es lo que nos permite lograr con exactitud la respuesta a los retos que se nos plantean y poder obtener una satisfacción de nuestro trabajo como arquitectos.

S.L: ¿Cuáles son las cualidades imprescindibles que debería tener un arquitecto?

Fran: Las cualidades esenciales de un arquitecto derivan de un enfoque de proyecto basado en el compromiso de responder técnicamente a contextos específicos y buscar una belleza duradera en sus obras. Este proceso involucra la satisfacción completa de todos los participantes, desde clientes hasta colaboradores, enfatizando la continuidad con el entorno, la optimización de materiales y la integración de tecnologías innovadoras que mejoren la experiencia de vida. La precisión durante todas las fases del proyecto y el diálogo constante garantizan que cada espacio refleje fielmente la identidad de sus usuarios. Imagine a bright, sun-kissed afternoon with a gentle breeze sweeping across lush green fields. The air is filled with excitement, the gentle murmur of conversations overlaid with the clack of mallets hitting balls, the thunder of polo horse hooves, the encouragement of the spectators and bursts of applause. You find yourself at a polo match, a spectacle of elegance and athleticism, where tradition meets the thrill of speed and skill.

Polo, often dubbed the “the sport of kings”, is an ancient horseback field sport, a team game played on horseback combining strategy, agility, and horsemanship. It is played professionally in 16 countries, including Spain, the US, Argentina and England. Sotogrande hosts four prestigious polo clubs, with top international tournaments and world-class players.

History of POLO

The game of polo originates from Persia (modern-day Iran) in the sixth century BC, played by both men and women: it is one of the world’s oldest known team sports.

Polo was used to train cavalry units and was practised in the royal courts. During the fifteenth century, the game was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia, particularly India, Tibet, Pakistan and China (via the Silk Road), but also Japan and Arabia.

In the 19th century, two British soldiers posted in colonial India, Lieutenant Joseph Ford Sherer and Captain Robert Stewart - who founded the oldest still-

existing polo club, Calcutta Polo Club - brought the game back to their peers in England, using the Tibetan words for ball, “polo” and “pulu”. The British are then credited with spreading polo worldwide in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century.

Polo came to Spain in 1870 thanks to Pedro Nolasco Gonzalez de Soto, son of the founders of Sherry winery Bodegas Gonzalez Byass. Gonzalez de Soto founded Spain’s first polo club, Real Club de Polo de Xerex in Jerez. Polo grew enormously in popularity during the rule of King Alfonso XIII, with clubs and grounds being established in Santander, Bilbao, Sevilla, Cordoba, Valencia and Granada. Subsequently polo in Spain declined in popularity until 1965, when the first ground was built in Sotogrande.

Polo in SOTOGRANDE

Polo was brought to Sotogrande by its founding family. Colonel Joseph Rafael McMicking e Ynchausti and his wife Mercedes Zóbel de Ayala y Roxas. Manilaborn McMicking was the heir to a Philippine multi-national conglomerate, Ynchausti y Compañía, while Mercedes was a member of the prestigious Zobel de Ayala family. Their aim was to build a Palm Beach-style development in Spain. The couple founded Sotogrande in 1962

and the following year Enrique Zóbel, nephew of Mercedes Zóbel, built the first polo field, La Playa, between Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande and the beach. The first tournaments were held in 1967.

More recently, in the 21st century, polo experienced a revival and the famous grounds of Sotogrande have been dubbed the ‘Wimbledon of Polo Pitches’.

As Andres Ugarte, polo journalist and TV commentator explains, “Sotogrande is one of the great polo places in the world. Every polo player aspires to reach a 10-goal handicap, and to win the Argentine

Open, the British Open, the US Open, and the Sotogrande tournaments. The seven fields on which the Sotogrande polo season is played are considered the best in Europe.”

Today there are several polo clubs in or around the Sotogrande area.

Santa Maria Polo Club is the most well-known polo club in Spain and dominates the fields with its three sites and facilities on and off the field.

Ayala Polo Club based in nearby San Enrique was founded by Iñigo Zobel, son of Enrique Zóbel and great-nephew of Mercedes Zóbel. Today the legacy has been taken up by the founder’s granddaughter, Paola Zóbel.

Other polo clubs in Sotogrande are La Querencia Polo Club and Tres Rosas Polo Club. Nearby are Club de Polo Dos Lunas and Club de Polo La Capilla in San Martín del Tesorillo, and Iridike Polo Club in Jimena de la Frontera.

What matches are there and where do they take place?

Tournaments take place throughout the spring and summer months at the polo clubs in Sotogrande –from 8 April to 15 September 2024. All the tournaments are free events open to the public.

The most important and prestigious tournament is the Sotogrande International Polo Tournament, which first took place in 1971 and, runs from the last week of July until the end of August (22 July to 31 August 2024). This tournament is divided into three Cups: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

This year in August there will also be a test-match between the reigning FIP (Federation of International Polo) World Polo Championship world champions, Spain, and Argentina.

In 2021 the Ayala Polo Club took over from Santa Maria Polo Club as organiser of this prestigious summer tournament for at least five seasons until 2027.

Most of the matches take place at the Santa Maria Polo Club’s facilities at their Los Pinos Ground near Sotogrande Marina, with some at Ayala.

How a polo match is played?

This fast-moving sport features teams of four players on horseback, each armed with a long-handled mallet. The goal? To drive a small ball down the field and send it soaring between the opponent’s goal posts’, there is no cross bar, the ball can be at any height.

The match begins when the umpire ‘bowls in’ the ball at the centre of the field. From that moment, it’s a whirlwind of galloping horses. Each time a goal is scored, the teams switch directions, a clever adjustment, ensuring a balanced game regardless of field conditions or wind. Horses race across the expansive grass pitch; the Los Pinos fields are over four times the size of a full-sized football pitch, such as Wembley.

¿Qué torneos hay y dónde?

Los torneos se llevan a cabo durante los meses de primavera y verano en los clubes de polo de Sotogrande, desde el 8 de abril hasta el 15 de septiembre de 2024. Todos los torneos son eventos gratuitos y abiertos al público.

El torneo más importante y prestigioso es el Torneo Internacional de Polo de Sotogrande, que se celebró por primera vez en 1971 y se llevará a cabo desde la última semana de julio hasta finales de agosto (del 22 de julio al 31 de agosto de 2024). Este torneo se divide en tres Copas: Bronce, Plata y Oro.

La mayoría de los partidos se llevan a cabo en las instalaciones del Santa Maria Polo Club, en su campo de Los Pinos, cerca de la Marina de Sotogrande, y algunos en Ayala.

¿Cómo se juega un partido de polo?

Este deporte de ritmo vertiginoso cuenta con equipos de cuatro jugadores a caballo, cada uno armado con un mazo de mango largo. ¿El objetivo? Guiar una pequeña pelota, llamada bocha, por el campo para enviarla entre los postes de la portería del oponente; no hay barra transversal, la bocha puede estar a cualquier altura.

El partido comienza cuando el árbitro “lanza” la bocha en el centro del campo. A partir de ese momento, es un torbellino de caballos galopando. Cada vez que se anota un gol, los equipos cambian de dirección, un ajuste inteligente que asegura un juego equilibrado independientemente de las condiciones del campo o el viento. Los caballos corren a través del extenso césped; los campos de Los Pinos son más de cuatro veces el tamaño de un campo de fútbol de tamaño completo, como Wembley.

The match is divided into seven-minute periods known as chukkas. Depending on the level of play, a match can have anywhere from four to eight chukkas, ensuring non-stop action. Between chukkas, there are four-minute intervals whilst a ten-minute break at half-time provides a welcome respite for both players and spectators. During these intervals, players switch to fresh polo ponies. At the professional level, players may change horses every 3-4 minutes to maintain peak performance.

Spectators can keep track of the game’s progress on the scoreboard, which displays the teams’ names and their shirt colours for easy identification. As the clock counts down on the seven-minute chukka, anticipation builds. The action doesn’t stop there— play continues for an additional 30 seconds or until a stoppage in play.

So, the next time you find yourself at a polo match, whether you’re a seasoned fan or a first-time spectator, soak in the vibrant atmosphere, the thunder of horses’ hooves, the clack of mallets striking the ball and the cheers of the crowd. It’s not just a game; it’s a heart-pounding adventure where tradition meets the thrill of modern sport.

Watching polo

Spectators are welcome to attend any of the tournaments, however the best one to visit, particularly for a resident or visitor to Sotogrande, is the Sotogrande International Polo Tournament at the Los Pinos Polo fields. Admission and parking are free.

There is a ‘VIP Daily Pass’, which costs 50 euros for the heats and 150 euros for the finals

On the tenth anniversary of the death of Paco de Lucía, one of the world’s most influential guitarists, Sotogrande Life renders homage to the man who rose from the streets of Algeciras (Cádiz) to dominate an instrument he began learning at the age of five.

The “gaditano” guitarist suffered a fatal heart attack on a beach in Cancún, Mexico, (where he had a holiday home) while relaxing with his family on 25 February 2014. News of his death sent shockwaves through social media and television channels, forcing politicians, musicians, celebrities and royalty to interrupt their schedules in order to honour the passing of this legend.

Although his name became synonymous with flamenco, and especially with the Gypsy singer, Camarón de la Isla, he went on to become the most imitated and revered guitarists of his generation - a musician that Eric Clapton had referred to as “a titanic figure in the world of flamenco guitar”.

A star born in a family of musicians

Born Francisco Sánchez Gómez in Algeciras, Cádiz, in 1947, Paco would first team up with his younger brother Pepe when just fifteen years of age, and together they achieved considerable acclaim as Los Chiquitos de Algeciras. He was the youngest of the five children of flamenco guitarist Antonio Sánchez Pecino, who inflicted an extremely strict routine on Paco from the age of five, forcing him to practice up to 12 hours every day to ensure that he would become successful as a professional musician. As his biographer Donn Pohren noted, Antonio “moulded his son” into a worldclass musician, and continued to “dictate” even after Paco became famous.

At the age of seventeen, Paco, who took the stage name of ‘de Lucía’ from his Portuguese mother (Luzía Gomes Goncalves), was soon on his way to international stardom, especially when he became the regular guitarist for the flamenco troupe of José Greco, an Italian-born American flamenco dancer and choreographer known for popularizing Spanish dance on the stage and screen in America mostly in the 1950s and 1960s.

A staunch supporter of Hermanos Conde guitars (he even had his own signature model), Paco’s early style was heavily influenced by Niño Ricardo, a Spanish flamenco guitarist considered one of the pioneers of contemporary flamenco guitar playing. However, it was while in America with Greco that the legendary guitarist Sabicas - at that time considered the greatest flamenco guitarist in the world - convinced a young Paco to find a different path and create his own style. This clearly had an impact in de Lucía who soon created a new language that gave a more modern feel to the existing flamenco guitar, at the time dominated by Ramón Montoya, Niño Ricardo and Sabicas.

In 1967, he recorded his first solo album, La Fabulosa Guitarra de Paco de Lucía, and by this time he was well on his way to becoming a star in Spain.

The global music scene was changing at the start of the 1970s, and Spain was no exception, especially on the flamenco scene. A meeting between Paco de Lucía and a young flamenco singer by the name of Camarón de la Isla (José Monje Cruz) was about to change the face of flamenco forever. Together they altered and changed the rules of the art, embarking on a quest that was to turn the flamenco scene on its head.

Paco’s early work with Camarón produced some of the finest flamenco ever recorded and these albums, of which there were ten, paved the way for a revolutionary new style termed ‘new flamenco’, which captured the attention of the younger generation.

Although Paco de Lucía was fast becoming the most phenomenal flamenco accompanist of them all, he also enjoyed a solo career, and this would take him to greater heights than he could have ever have achieved with Camarón de la Isla.

His recording Fuente y Caudal was to achieve unprecedented success, and the rumba, Entre dos aguas, created an anthem that has become one of the classic guitar pieces of all time.

Inevitably, Camarón and Paco parted company in 1977 with the recording, Castillo de Arena, although they would team up again fifteen years later, shortly before the singer’s death in 1992. Aside from his association with Camarón, Paco accompanied many of the most renowned flamenco singers of the 20th and early 21st centuries, including Antonio Mairena, El Sordero de Jerez, Enrique Morente, Fosforito and El Lebrijano, to name a few.

New directions

During this period, Paco de Lucía performed extensively across the US and Europe, increasing his popularity outside the Spanish flamenco scene - joining forces with jazz and Latin musicians, while developing a keen interest in flamenco/jazz and rock fusion.

He began playing on stages around the world with some of the great jazz figures of that era. In fact, Paco was one of the first flamenco guitarists to branch into jazz music, working alongside iconic musicians such as American pianist Chick Corea, and renowned jazz guitarists Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell, among a huge list of others. It is said that his love of the genre began in 1967, when he performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival, where he was greatly influenced by trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. He continued working with Corea, McLaughlin and Coryell throughout the 1980s.

A string of solo recordings followed, including Ziryab, a tribute to the ninth-century Persian musician; and Luzia, which was dedicated to his mother. In 2004, he produced one of his most celebrated works, Cositas Buenas; and in this same year, he was presented with the prestigious Principe de Asturias Award.

Fue uno de los primeros guitarristas flamencos en incursionar en la música jazz, trabajando junto a músicos icónicos como el pianista estadounidense Chick Corea y los renombrados guitarristas de jazz Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin y Larry Coryell, entre una extensa lista. Se dice que su amor por el género comenzó en 1967, cuando actuó en el Festival de Jazz de Berlín, donde fue fuertemente influenciado por el trompetista Miles Davis y el pianista Thelonious Monk. His status continued to gain momentum, as is demonstrated by the numerous awards and accolades he received for his achievements and contribution to the flamenco guitar, which, to this day, have remained unsurpassed.

Legacy

Described as being “central to the history of flamenco in the last quarter of the twentieth century”, Paco stood out for his fast and fluent ‘picados’, a passage of single notes that give flamenco its unique flavour; and ‘rasgueados’, the rhythmic strumming of the muted strings. He was known for adding abstract chords and scale tones to his compositions, which is one of the reasons he has been worshipped by guitarists in every corner of the globe: if one looks closely, one will see a little bit of Paco de Lucía in just about every Spanish guitarist born this side of the 1950s.

He was widely considered to be Spain’s greatest musical export, and he had a revolutionary influence on flamenco music both as a composer and performer. De Lucía is also credited for introducing the cajón (box drum) into flamenco, an Afro-Peruvian instrument which he saw as a permanent solution to the need for percussion in flamenco.

Billboard magazine named him one of The 30 Most Influential Latin Artists of All Time in 2015, while claiming: “The virtuoso instrumentalist popularised flamenco worldwide, and brought the Spanish sound to the forefront of avant-garde jazz.”

Fue considerado como la mayor exportación musical de España y tuvo una influencia revolucionaria en la música flamenca tanto como compositor como intérprete. También se le atribuye la introducción del cajón en el flamenco, un instrumento afroperuano que él veía como una solución permanente a la necesidad de percusión en el flamenco.

La revista Billboard lo nombró uno de los 30 Artistas latinos más influyentes de todos los tiempos en 2015, afirmando: “El virtuoso instrumentalista popularizó el flamenco en todo el mundo y llevó el sonido español del jazz a la vanguardia”.

He was posthumously inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame one year after his death. The town where he was born erected a bronze statue in his honour in 1994, which has been relocated several times, until arriving at its current location at the entrance to the port in 2017. The town hall has also introduced the Ruta de Paco de Lucía, a route that includes the house where he was born, places he referenced in his music, his tomb and various other locations that are relevant to his life.

A tribute concert by Antonio Sánchez, nephew of Paco de Lucía, will take place at The Beach on August 21st to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the maestro’s death. Find more information at sotogrande.com

The importance of the luthier: a key connection in music and tradition.

Paco de Lucía maintained a close relationship with luthiers, skilled artisans specializing in the construction and adjustment of guitars.

The luthiers’ ability to fine-tune string action, tonal response, and other intricate details ensured that each guitar resonated with the passion and emotion Paco conveyed in every note. His legacy is not only found in his memorable recordings and concerts but also in the enduring influence he exerted on the craftsmanship of flamenco guitars. This was made possible through collaborations with artisans like Antonio Morales, who became his luthier, working closely with Paco de Lucía in perfecting “La Maestro”: a guitar designed by both, crafted to the guitarist’s exact specifications and desires.

Her hand-painted, fine porcelain and stoneware dishes, featuring nature inspired designs, are now amongst the most desired and sought-after items for stylish homes. To gain the inside track on this artistic phenomenon, we catch up with Bárbara Pan de Soraluce, creator of ‘Los Platos de Pan’ in one of her favourite places, Sotogrande.

Sus platos de porcelana fina y loza pintados a mano, con diseños inspirados en la naturaleza, están ahora entre los artículos más deseados y codiciados para los hogares más elegantes. Para conocer más sobre este fenómeno artístico, conversamos con Bárbara Pan de Soraluce, creadora de ‘Los Platos de Pan’, en uno de sus lugares favoritos, Sotogrande.

“Sotogrande is where my family and I leave our worries aside, where timetables and commitments no longer exist, and days are of endless sunshine – in short, it is our paradise” exclaims Bárbara, who regularly escapes to the sun splashed shores of Andalucia, from her family home in Madrid.

Bárbara’s hand painted ceramics are taking Spain by storm, and her Instagram account @losplatosdepan has become a favourite with thousands, yet she introduces the project with a charming lack of pretension, “my surname is Pan and I paint plates.”

Though her Instagram gallery she not only shares her latest creations of exquisite, original designs depicting everything from marine life to flowers, fruits, vegetables, and plants, but also videos of her captivating ‘Little Sunday Tutorials.’ These entertaining and inspiring sessions in her studio feature Bárbara painting while in conversation with other contemporary illustrators, painters, designers, and celebrities. Bárbara is undoubtedly inspired by the creative people she meets and cherishes, from the worlds of art, fashion, architecture, design, and the performing arts.

“My ‘Tutorialillos Dominicales’ are without doubt the best thing that has come out of Los Platos de Pan. I think each time I learn much more from my dear guests than they learn from me!” laughs Bárbara. She continues, “these are not really a painting class, it’s more a dialogue, a conversation, almost like therapy for both parties. I think that’s why it works so well; my studio space is where the guest feels comfortable and through this time together the meeting evolves into a conversation between real friends.”

It was during the pandemic that Bárbara sought sanctuary in Sotogrande, but she realised that “I needed to paint, to create. missed it so much that set up a studio upstairs on the terrace and now it’s my creative refuge. Sotogrande is where we find balance in life, where my children can go to the beach, play, and go cycling. That’s when I take advantage of the tranquillity and go upstairs and get lost amongst my brushes and paints.”

“Sotogrande es donde mi familia y yo dejamos las preocupaciones atrás donde los horarios y compromisos ya no existen, y los días de sol son interminables; en resumen, es nuestro paraíso” exclama Bárbara, quien se escapa regularmente a las soleadas costas de Andalucía desde su casa familiar en Madrid.

Las cerámicas pintadas a mano de Bárbara están causando furor en España, y su cuenta de Instagram @losplatosdepan se ha convertido en una de las favoritas para miles de seguidores. Sin embargo, ella presenta el proyecto con una encantadora falta de pretensión: “mi apellido es Pan y pinto platos”.

A través de su galería en Instagram, no solo comparte sus últimas creaciones de originales y distinguidos diseños que representan desde la vida marina hasta flores, frutas, vegetales y plantas, sino también videos de sus cautivadores ‘Tutorialillo Dominical’. Estas sesiones entretenidas e inspiradoras en su estudio muestran a Bárbara pintando mientras conversa con otros ilustradores, pintores, diseñadores y celebridades contemporáneas. Bárbara se siente indudablemente inspirada por las personas creativas que conoce y valora, provenientes del mundo del arte, la moda, la arquitectura, el diseño y las artes escénicas.

“Mis ‘Tutorialillos Dominicales’ son, sin duda, lo mejor que ha surgido de Los Platos de Pan. ¡Creo que aprendo mucho más de mis queridos invitados de lo que ellos aprenden de mí!” ríe Bárbara. Ella continúa, “estos no son realmente una clase de pintura, es más un diálogo, una conversación, casi como una terapia para ambas partes. Creo que por eso funciona tan bien; mi estudio es el espacio donde el invitado se siente cómodo y, mediante este tiempo juntos, el encuentro evoluciona en una conversación entre verdaderos amigos.”

Fue durante la pandemia cuando Bárbara buscó refugio en Sotogrande, pero se dio cuenta de que “necesitaba pintar, crear. Lo extrañaba tanto que monté un estudio arriba, en la terraza, y ahora es mi refugio creativo. Sotogrande es donde encontramos el equilibrio en la vida, donde mis hijos pueden ir a la playa, jugar y montar en bicicleta. Es entonces cuando aprovecho esta tranquilidad, subo y me pierdo entre mis pinceles y pinturas.”

Entrepreneur, socialite, artist and mother, Bárbara Pan de Soraluce is an extraordinary person, recognized not only for her impeccable style, but above all for her warmth and charisma. Renowned for her exuberance and unforgettable parties with artists, designers, and musicians, Bárbara finds her friends and loved ones an essential source of her extraordinary optimism, energy, and joy of life. “I love to share time with my sons and daughters. I also adore sharing my home, entertaining friends in the garden of my Madrid home, on the terrace in Sotogrande, or inviting people to my studio. feel that the happiness this creates in my life is probably one of my greatest achievements,” she confirms.

Bárbara is from a creative family and studied Fine Arts in Ireland yet discovered her love of painting ceramics through classes with Carmen Muñoz, who offers ceramic painting classes in a Madrid studio. “I think I must have driven them crazy” jokes Bárbara.

“I was a bit of a rule breaker, I didn’t follow everything they we’re telling me, but Carmen Muñoz made me feel free, and confident to paint ceramics with my personal style and vision – the truth is that I owe her everything. I am what I am thanks to Carmen Muñoz.”

Since then, Los Platos de Pan has taken on a creative life on its own, “ceramics had never been my artistic priority” explains Bárbara, “until I discovered that plates could be a such wonderful canvas. Now it’s my preferred medium for painting, much more than paper or canvas.” Each plate is a unique expression of creativity, many made as personalized commissioned pieces, which will undoubtedly become family heirlooms for their new owners.

The earthenware and stoneware ceramics and Limoges porcelain are sourced from France and Portugal, where Bárbara and her team have built up close working relationships with international potteries and suppliers. Over time Bárbara sees her work evolving, with her designing her own dishes and plates. In the meantime, the sun-kissed landscapes of Cádiz continue to be the inspiration for her original, eclectic painted designs, “here nature continually inspires me, that’s why I love coming to Cádiz, where every plant, every leaf is a piece of art.”

Emprendedora, socialité, artista y madre, Bárbara Pan de Soraluce es una persona extraordinaria, reconocida no solo por su estilo impecable, sino sobre todo por su cercanía y carisma. Famosa por su exuberancia y sus fiestas inolvidables con artistas, diseñadores y músicos, Bárbara encuentra en sus amigos y seres queridos una fuente esencial de su extraordinario optimismo, energía y entusiasmo por la vida. “Me encanta compartir tiempo con mis hijos e hijas. También adoro compartir mi hogar, recibir a amigos en el jardín de mi casa en Madrid, en la terraza en Sotogrande, o invitar a gente a mi estudio. Siento que la felicidad que esto crea en mi vida es probablemente uno de mis mayores logros”, confirma.

Bárbara proviene de una familia creativa y estudió Bellas Artes en Irlanda, pero descubrió su amor por la pintura cerámica a través de las clases con Carmen Muñoz, quien ofrece clases de pintura cerámica en un estudio de Madrid. “Creo que debí volverlos locos”, bromea Bárbara.

“Era un poco rebelde, no seguía todo lo que me decían, pero Carmen Muñoz me hizo sentir libre y segura para pintar cerámica con mi estilo y visión personal; la verdad es que le debo todo. Soy lo que soy gracias a Carmen Muñoz.”

Desde entonces, Los Platos de Pan han cobrado vida propia, “la cerámica nunca había sido mi prioridad artística” explica Bárbara, “hasta que descubrí que los platos podían ser un lienzo maravilloso. Ahora es mi medio preferido para pintar, mucho más que el papel o el lienzo.” Cada plato es una expresión única de creatividad, muchos de ellos hechos como piezas personalizadas por encargo, que sin duda se convertirán en reliquias familiares para sus nuevos dueños.

La loza, la cerámica y la porcelana de Limoges son obtenidas de Francia y Portugal, donde Bárbara y su equipo han establecido estrechas relaciones de trabajo con alfarerías y proveedores internacionales. Con el tiempo, Bárbara ve su trabajo evolucionando, diseñando su propia vajilla y platos. Mientras tanto, los paisajes de Cádiz bañados por el sol continúan siendo la inspiración para sus diseños originales y eclécticos, “aquí la naturaleza me inspira continuamente, por eso me encanta venir a Cádiz, donde cada planta, cada hoja es una obra de arte.”

Madrid of course remains an important part of Barbara’s life and that of her family. The metropolis is also an endless source of stimulation, with its vibrant arts scene.

“It may seem a cliché to visit the likes of Museo Nacional del Prado, but I so enjoy catching up on their latest exhibitions, and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza always has entertaining exhibitions to enjoy with the family.”

I also adore the remarkable La Fundación Juan March too, which organises captivating exhibitions, concerts and conferences in Madrid and also has the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español” explains Bárbara. “Madrid continues to be a city that explore every day, with morning walks. I’ve discovered the Instagram account @madrid_secreto and it’s giving me a fresh perspective to my city, introducing me to places wouldn’t have thought of visiting before. am also enjoying cinema more and more. love to go to see the latest releases with my husband, and my youngest daughter, who’s quite the film buff – it’s one of my great pleasures sharing this time with my family.”

Me encanta ir a ver los últimos estrenos con mi marido y mi hija menor, que es una gran cinéfila; compartir este tiempo con mi familia es uno de mis grandes placeres.”
