Your support helps our students change the world

Creating value, investing in the future.

about soka’s endowment funds

Generous benefactors who support Soka make it possible to keep our promise to educate the next generation of global citizens, regardless of their ability to pay for a private university education. Our need-blind admissions process enables all applicants to be considered, regardless of economic status. As a result, we can consider worldwide applicants with vastly varied life experiences who share a passion to give back to society.

At most universities, operating expenses are largely covered by student tuition. Tuition-dependent institutions rely on the number of enrolled students for their financial well-being. At the same time, tuition alone rarely covers the true cost of a student’s education. Soka University of America is unique – we rely mainly on endowment income to cover most of our operating expenses.

A core principle of Soka education is heavy investment in the education and development of each individual student. We have established excellent facilities, academic curriculum, international education opportunities, residential life system, athletic programs, and extracurricular activities. Students have access to world-class faculty, and we encourage them to foster strong personal relationships. The endowment is integral to our ability to provide numerous scholarships.

Every SUA student receives a merit scholarship, and tuition is fully covered for students with family incomes below $90,000. We provide substantial aid to those with families that have higher incomes as well.

Because of the endowment, qualified students can focus on their studies and map out their plans to change the world. Our benefactors are a vital component of Soka’s blueprint for the betterment of the planet. Your gift is not only appreciated; it is crucial to the future of Soka University of America.

To honor those who would like to include Soka in their estate plans, we have established the Legacy Society. It encourages donors to think beyond their lifespan to leave the world a better place through hearts and minds that have been opened by a Soka education.

You may never meet the future generations who will work to carry out Soka’s overarching goals of wisdom, courage, and compassion. But they will make these tenets thrive in a world sure to test them. They will do so with gratitude for your vision and generosity.

Greetings,

Inspired by the vision of our university founder Daisaku Ikeda, Soka University of America educates students from around the world, empowering them to develop the essential elements of global citizenship. Learning from our dedicated faculty and each other, Soka students explore important life themes spanning multiple disciplines and world perspectives. Following graduation, Soka alumni use the wisdom they have gained to transform society with courage and compassion.

Our values-driven education means we are committed to preparing graduates for their careers and to cultivating better human beings. To guarantee that no qualified student is denied a Soka education due to financial constraints, it is imperative to maintain our need-blind admission policy. This is why your support is so very important.

With your help, Soka graduates will continue to improve the world for everyone. From the bottom of my heart, I extend my sincerest appreciation for your support.

empowering dreams: the inspiring journey of prakash bista

Prakash Bista from the class of 2017 began his journey in the remote village of Lalu in Nepal. Prakash’s family sent him to Kathmandu to pursue his education, where he excelled academically. He lost both his parents before finishing high school, but rather than give in to despair, Prakash’s vision of helping others took root. Driven by the desire to share the gift of education with the children of his village, he established the Modern Model Residential School in Kathmandu.

The Office of Admission at SUA was impressed by his achievements as a high school student and recognized the potential impact of his endeavors. Prakash was offered generous financial aid to enroll at SUA.

During his time at Soka, Prakash’s vision evolved and matured. In his junior year, he established Impact Schools, a nonprofit supporting the expansion of educational opportunity and access in Nepal.

After graduating from SUA, Prakash earned a master’s degree at the prestigious London School of Economics and then returned to his village in Nepal to manage the school he founded and continue transforming lives through education.

Prakash’s school has since become a home for orphaned children, and through Impact Schools, social entrepreneurship projects have transformed surrounding villages. Today, five schools thrive under his vision, inspiring change through education and compassion. Prakash embodies the principles of wisdom, courage, and compassion, making a lasting impact on countless lives.
