Preparing You for Clinical Social Work Practice

As a Master of Social Work (MSW) student, you’ll develop the comprehensive engagement, assessment, intervention and evaluation skills to support client empowerment. Our curriculum draws on cutting edge research while centering the client and their intersecting identities. You’ll study with a diverse group of professionals and world-class faculty to prepare you for clinical social work in a variety of settings such as mental health, schools, hospitals, child welfare and youth justice, aging services, addiction facilities, hospice, shelters, community-based organizations and more. The UW School of Social Work in Seattle has consistently ranked among the top 10 schools in the nation.

In addition to building theoretical and practical skills in the classroom, you’ll gain the relevant, hands-on field education that employers expect. As an MSW student, you’ll participate in two practicum opportunities:

• Generalist practicum: begins 4th quarter; 360 hours, 1–2 days per week (weekday, daytime hours)

• Specialized practicum: begins 8th quarter; 680 hours, 2–3 days per week (weekday, daytime hours)

Flexibility for Working Professionals

Earn a Master of Social Work part-time while you work, in 11 consecutive quarters (including summers):

• Evening (in-person) track: Required weeknight classes from 6 to 9 p.m. In the first three quarters students take two classes per quarter. Practicum begins in the fourth quarter and students continue taking one to two classes each quarter in addition to field-based learning.

• NEW Online track: Starting in the fall quarter of 2026 our parttime MSW program will now be available fully online. This new option is designed to take place over 11 quarters (3 years, including summers). Classes will typically be offered on weekday evenings, virtually/remote, synchronous for about three hours (e.g., 6:00 p.m.– 8:50 p.m.). On-site practicum participation will begin in the fourth quarter and will require a 1–3 day per week commitment to working in-person. Those who have demonstrated a commitment to working with a community in underserved regions of WA are encouraged to apply.

Social workers maintain a holistic, strengths-based perspective to work with people in their own environment. Our scholars strive to be culturally responsive critical thinkers and problem solvers who advocate for equity and justice.

Fast-Growing, Diverse Career Opportunities in High Demand

Social work is one of the most versatile, rapidly growing careers in the United States:

• According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, professional social workers are the nation’s largest group of mental health service providers There are more clinically trained social workers than psychiatrists, psychologists and psychiatric nurses combined.

• An MSW degree opens a pathway toward licensure. The Bureau of Labor Statistics job outlook is particularly strong for clinical social workers.

PROJECTED JOB GROWTH (BLS.GOV)

This graph shows projected growth for two types of roles clinical social workers seek.

The UW was a good fit for me as an older adult with family and older kids and husband. I’ve enjoyed the combination of in person and online options ... Overall, I Iike the flexibility and think it’s lead to my success.

Exceptional Value and Financial Support

The Washington State Behavioral Health Workforce Development Initiative will expand the number of masters-level social workers and mental health counselors in Washington state who serve individuals and families experiencing severe mental health or substance use issues. Students receive multi-year grants, totaling up to $51,500, to offset their graduate education expenses in return for serving three years in approved community-based behavioral health agencies or tribal health centers in Washington state.

Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program (CWTAP) promotes training excellence for Washington state’s child welfare workforce through the financial support of social work students and professionals. This state-funded partnership links the resources of UW School of Social Work, Alliance for Child Welfare Excellence and the state’s Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF). Now in its 30th year, CWTAP provides qualified participants with specialized field education focused on casework. Once students complete their MSW studies, they commit to seeking employment with the DCYF and agree to work for a period equal to the time they received financial assistance.
