Do young women really die of broken hearts? It seems to be rather common in the Romantic ballets of the early 19th century, and Giselle is perhaps the most famous example. Giselle has a weak heart but still expresses her happiness by dancing at the village festival. But after she discovers her true love is actually a prince in disguise whose mother arrives and demands her son return to his betrothed, she goes mad and collapses. Can Giselle ever forgive him, even after her death?

American Ballet Theatre returns to open the 2025–26 dance season with this classic acclaimed work filled with romance, heartbreak, forgiveness, and lots of white tulle tutus. “Giselle remains ABT’s crown jewel,” says bachtrack.com

Here are a few things you may not know about Giselle.*

• Giselle was one of the first full-length ballets to be danced en pointe. This was a relatively new way to dance: Italian dancer Marie Taglioni was the first to perform en pointe in 1832, which gave the audience the illusion that she was a creature floating above the stage.

• Before the Romantic period, it was usually male dancers who danced the lead character in ballets. It was at this time that female dancers became the central character.

• It is well-known that Carlotta Grisi was the first Giselle. Not so well known is that the first Prince Albrecht was danced by Lucien Petipa, brother of the famed choreographer Mauris Petipa.

• The original ballet premiered in Paris in 1841 but was only performed until the late 1860s. Later, Marius Petipa restaged it for the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg. His is the version we still use today.

Photo: Rosalie O’Connor

• In the early 19th century, a waltz was considered a German dance. The waltzes in the first act of Giselle tell the audience the setting of the ballet.

• The Act 1 pas de deux is a beloved part of Giselle, but it was not in the original ballet. The story goes that a rich banker who was funding the production wanted his dancer mistress to have a special part in the ballet, so the pas de deux was inserted to show off her talents.

• Did you just get the wilis? It’s that spooky feeling that something—maybe a spirit—has just flitted past you. The Wilis in Giselle are the ghosts of young women jilted before their wedding day. They haunt the forest at night and if they catch a man there they will force him to dance until he drops dead of exhaustion. When the sun comes up the Wilis return to their graves.

• The ballet started a fad for Giselle’s hairstyle, which was center parted, pulled back in a bun and covered her ears. Queen Victoria was very keen on this style and it can be seen in many portraits of her when she was young.

• The ballet was extremely popular. The production earned the Paris Opera 6,500 francs between June and September, twice what had been earned in the same period in 1839.

• Early merch included sheet music and prints of Carlotta Grisi as Giselle, which flew out of shops!

Audiences will be transported by this acclaimed production. Experience this timeless tale by one of the world’s best dance companies.

Have you heard the song “I’m a Believer” sung by The Monkees? It hit the number-one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained there for seven weeks, becoming the biggest-selling single for all of 1967.

That was a little ditty that Neil Diamond quickly jotted down when he needed some extra cash. Yes, Neil Diamond.

Now, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical comes to the Center in July. Created in collaboration with Diamond himself, it’s the uplifting true story of how a kid from Brooklyn became a chart-busting, show-stopping American rock icon.

Diamond had an incredible career, releasing 39 albums with so many songs that are instantly recognizable, and selling more than 140 million albums. With an induction into the Songwriters and the Rock and Roll halls of fame, a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award, and sold-out concerts around the world that made him bigger than Elvis, Neil Diamond’s story was made to shine on Broadway.

“I’m a Believer” was his first hit but it didn’t stop there. And if your name is Caroline, you might have grown up thinking everyone was serenading you with one of his most famous songs. Mega-hit “Sweet Caroline” was put together in 30 minutes and the name came from a magazine cover. Diamond owed a record company several songs and what he came up with was musical history.

This musical is framed by Diamond’s therapist, with whom he is working for acceptance and inner peace about the end of his career due to Parkinson’s Disease. He had a long career and without that diagnosis he has publicly said he would have toured longer. Throughout the show, he and the therapist watch from the sidelines as he goes through life making hits and dissolving two marriages. “What is refreshing about what is revealed about Diamond, warts and all, is that he is an ordinary guy with flaws and insecurities as large as his stardom,” says newcitystage.com.

There are 29 Diamond songs in the show. He was so prolific for so many years that it’s likely every one of them will be familiar. “It is a wonderful theatrical experience that Neil Diamond fans will cherish,” says aroundthetownchicago.com

You can assume that there might be more than one sing-along of “Sweet Caroline.” “It’s a beautiful noise, making music together …” says dctheaterarts.org. “This reviewer would add that it brings us together in a way few things do anymore.”

In the coming 2025-26 season the Center has three big story ballets that will thrill and enchant our audiences. From the ghosts of Giselle to sword-fighting ballerinas in Sylvia, the athleticism of the dancers and amazing sets and costumes, it’s everything dance lovers want on stage.

Opening the season in July is American Ballet Theatre’s Giselle, considered one of the most romantic ballets of all time. Since its premiere in 1841, it has held audiences in thrall with its tale of true love and redemption. We’ve got the full story on page 8.

When Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein in 1818, she had little notion it would become one of the most famous horror stories in English literature. She and some friends, including Lord Byron, were stuck indoors during a few rainy days in Switzerland. They needed something to occupy their time and decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. And thus the monster—or Creature, as it was named—was brought to life on paper. (At the same house party, John William Polidori

contributed The Vampyre, which is thought to have set off the vampire story genre. Polidori’s composition does not have a happy ending either.)

Now the creature has been brought to life again. Originally choreographed for The Royal Ballet by Liam Scarlett, San Francisco Ballet brings Frankenstein to Orange County. “Scarlett’s work has been lauded for its psychological complexities and expressive movement in dance,” says Sanfranciscotheater.com. “Scarlett’s rich and evocative production … transforms it into a Gothic love story … with an emphasis on exploring what it means to be human.”

Most people know the story. Shrouded in mystery, Victor Frankenstein assembles the Creature piece by piece one night in a laboratory, breathing new life into his creation. What follows is more frightening that any of the Hollywood versions.

This captivating production offers a visceral, emotionally charged journey into life, death, love, and identity, enhanced by a hauntingly evocative score that intensifies the dark and dramatic atmosphere.

American Ballet Theatre returns in April with Sylvia, described as a mythical soap opera full of desire, deception and forbidden romance. You never quite know what you are going to get when you’re dealing with Greek gods.

Aminta, a shepherd, encounters Eros (Cupid) in the forest. Aminta is in love with Sylvia, a huntress follower of Diana, who appears and is struck by Eros’ arrow. Evil hunter Orion also desires Sylvia and kidnaps her but Eros comes to her rescue and whisks her off to the temple of Diana. Orion and Aminta also show up at the temple and start fighting, but when Diana arrives she banishes Orion. She decrees that Sylvia and Aminta shall be together under her protection, and they live happily ever after. Soap opera indeed!

Sylvia was originally created in 1876 but never became a hit, although the music by Leo Delibes remained popular. In 1952, British choreographer Fredrick Ashton created a new version for The Royal Ballet. The emphasis was on the character of Sylvia, a role he created for prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn.

Ashton’s choreography for Sylvia is actually quite modern. While using Delibes’ music, he incorporated new techniques and much more complex and intricate footwork. Principal ABT dancer Gillian Murphy who danced the lead role in a 2005 production, said “this choreography is very challenging.”

The third act is a delightful celebration of the happy couple; there are even dancing goats. But

Ashton does not give Sylvia a break, and here is where the audience will be amazed at the pointe work she is required to do while looking relaxed and happy.

For the holidays, The Nutcracker can be added to a subscription as a bonus option. Celebrating its 10th season at the Center, American Ballet Theatre’s acclaimed production continues to charm children and adults alike. “Ravishing and clever enough to inspire multiple viewings,” says the Los Angeles Times. Share one of the great joys of the holiday season with those you love.

A Beautiful Noise

Created in collaboration with Neil Diamond himself, A Beautiful Noise is the uplifting true story of how a kid from Brooklyn became a chart-busting, show-stopping American rock icon. With 120 million albums sold, a catalogue of classics like “America,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and “Sweet Caroline,” an induction into the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, a Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award, and sold-out concerts around the world that made him bigger than Elvis, Neil Diamond’s story was made to shine on Broadway—and head out on the road across America.

Like Jersey Boys and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical before it, A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical is an inspiring, exhilarating, energy-filled musical memoir, that tells the untold true story of how America’s greatest hitmaker became a star, set to the songs that defined his career.

Come explore and discover with the Center

The Center’s Family Series turns learning into fun. Whether it’s being introduced to ancient traditions or meeting new characters they never knew existed—hello Doodle POP!—children adore these imaginative performances.

New this season, each show will include an age-range recommendation, rather than dividing shows into two age groups. We offer an hour of free, fun activities for families to enjoy in the lobby before each performance. Families have the opportunity to play together, explore themes and content of the shows and connect with other families. Past pre-show activities have included puppet making, drum circles, conducting lessons and a silent disco.

We also offer sensory-friendly/relaxed performances for three of our shows. This provides a more relaxed environment, with low lighting, a lobby break space, a pre-visit guide and more.

The series opens in October with Sonia De Los Santos for ages 4–10. With a joyful demeanor she sings in both English and Spanish and has been entertaining audiences of all ages for nearly 20 years. De Los Santos has inspiring stories and anecdotes about growing up in Mexico and moving to New York City. Her music is inspired by Latin American rhythms including salsa, cumbia, and festejo, as well as North American traditions. In the midst of the laughter and fun she makes every moment an exciting and educational experience for all. “Sonia De Los Santos has a story to sing,” says the San Diego Union Tribune. “She aims to bring messages of hope and joy to children through her songs.”

This show will have a sensory-friendly/ relaxed performance.

Being the Pigeon is tough—you never get to do anything! In Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical! (for ages 4–8), poor Pigeon begs and begs for his big bus opportunity, but he can’t drive a bus with his wings, can he? When the bus driver faces a crisis that threatens to make her passengers (gasp!) late, maybe that wily bird CAN do something. With a script by Mo Willems, the creator of the No. 1 New York Times best-selling “Pigeon” picture books, and featuring an innovative mix of songs and feathers, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical! is sure to get everyone’s wings flapping. This production comes to us from TheaterWorksUSA, an exceptional company that has been a trailblazer in theater for young people for 57 years.

Every season the Family Series includes a show from the Center’s Broadway Series. This season will feature a performance of The Wiz in Segerstrom Hall for ages 8 and older. As a groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz, this new adaptation is a dynamite infusion of ballet, jazz and modern pop that brings a whole new groove to the yellow brick road. The musical is a great way to introduce your young theater lovers to a big show.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth returns with The Great Race for ages 4–9, a charming telling of an ancient story. Freddie and Ivy are getting ready to celebrate Chinese New Year, but they wonder how the Chinese Zodiac calendar came to be, and how the animal symbols were picked. As their grandparents help them make dumplings for the party, they tell the children the story of the Great Race. The Jade Emperor needs a way to tell time, so he decrees a race across a mighty river to determine the twelve animals of the Zodiac. Learn how each animal earned its place, how they made it across, and why the Cat and the Rat become enemies. The show features traditional Chinese music, Jingju, martial arts, and a whole lot of fun!

This show will have a sensory-friendly/ relaxed performance.

For generations, parents have shared Aesop’s tale of the hare and the tortoise with their kids but it was never told like this! These two friends agree to have a race to see who is the fastest, with a nail-biting, seconds-ticking end. But first they need to get to the starting line. Hare is ready, but Tortoise has a few things to do first. Hare and Tortoise, for ages 4–8, is a special story about opposites and friendship from the popular UK children’s theater group Tutti Frutti. It has charming characters, live music and singing, and wonderful physicality. “The real pleasure here is the friendship between the overexcitable Hare and the methodical Tortoise,” says The Guardian (UK). Tutti Frutti was most recently at Segerstrom Center with Underneath a Magical Moon.

This show will have a sensory-friendly/ relaxed performance.

Sometimes a show doesn’t have to use words to impart a message in a fun and unusual way. BRUSH Theatre from Seoul, South Korea makes its Center debut with Doodle POP! for ages 4–8. With a giant whiteboard wall onstage, a mischievous duo start to doodle and create a whole imaginative world. Drawing some circular lines, the pair invite us along on their sea adventure with a tiny turtle. Doodle POP! uses live musicians who perform the accompanying score and sound effects. With interactive animation projections and an abundance of theatrical imagination, this is a one-of-a-kind performance for audiences of every age.

New Owner is a heartwarming story of love, loss and new beginnings. When Mabel, a lonely widow, adopts Bart, a playful puppy, they form a profound friendship. But as time moves on, Bart is suddenly left alone. Combining puppetry, live action and animation, New Owner takes the audience on a world of adventure seen through a dog’s eyes. This show, for ages 7–12, arrives from Australia’s The Last Great Hunt, a Perthbased theater group that makes a range of new and exciting theater.

You can be invisible even when standing right in front of someone. In The Invisible Boy for ages 5–10, that’s the problem faced by Brian, overlooked by everyone and never invited to be part of a group. When new guy on campus, Justin, arrives, Brian is the first to make him feel

welcome. When they work on a class project together, Brian finds a way to shine. From one simple act of kindness, Brian’s world is changed for the better. With fun songs and heartfelt humor, this production helps us all discover how one simple gesture can change everything. The Invisible Boy comes to the Center from Children’s Theatre of Charlotte and Experimental Theater Compay, which has brought several popular shows to the Center, including last season’s Journey to Oz

Spotlight on: Vanessa Moore

Before there was a Center there was The Guilds of the Center, an umbrella for individual guilds, several of which were founded as early as 1980. The members have always been enthusiastic supporters of the arts. Many, including Vanessa Moore, are members of more than one guild. She joined The Guilds three years ago and is not just sitting on the sidelines. Moore was recently elected as the co-chair of The Guilds alongside Susan Condrey and will be the sole chair for the 2025–26 season.

“One of the things I love about The Guilds is that there’s a group supporting nearly every community or educational program at the Center,” says Vanessa. “For example, we have the Pas de Deux Guild, which supports ABT; the Beverly Sills Guild, which backs Disney Musicals in Schools; and the Carmen Guild, which champions Five Days of Broadway. So no matter your interest, there’s a Guild for everyone who wants to get more involved at the Center.”

Moore initially joined the Camelot Guild. This friendy group shares a love of the performing arts. ”It’s really nice being part of a group that that shares your interest in new arts experiences,” she says.

She also joined the Sound of Music Guild. Its purpose is to promote support for Studio D: Art School for All Abilities. The program was created so that everyone, no matter their ability, can experience the joy of the arts. As if all this wasn’t enough, in 2023 she joined The Guilds’ Executive Committee as a vice chair of special events. She planned and executed the annual All Guilds Fundraiser alongside Condrey, a huge undertaking. The event raised $300,000 to support the Center’s education and community engagement programs.

Moore is also a member of the Center’s Arts and Business Leadership Council, made up of business and community leaders who support Segerstrom Center’s mission through fundraising, advocacy and community outreach. It’s annual fundraiser raises raises more than

$100,000 in support of Disney Musicals in Schools.

Moore grew up in Newport Beach and joined the Laguna Beach Playhouse’s acting group, which ignited her love of the performing arts. At the Center she has been a longtime season subscriber.

“I have been a season ticket holder for years, and love Broadway musicals. I also appreciate that the Center provides so much varied live entertainment for the community. The free events on the plaza mean that everyone can enjoy a concert or dance event.”

Her support of the arts isn’t limited to Costa Mesa. A year ago, Moore was appointed to the City Arts Commission of Newport Beach. And with all of this, she still has her day job as broker associate for Harcourts Prime Properties in Newport Beach keeping her busy.

The Guilds of the Center is the oldest of our support groups, and its fundraising benefits our education, community engagement, and artistic programs. Each Guild hosts its own social events and fundraisers, and all chapters come together for an annual Spring Celebration.

Guilds members are ambassadors for the Center, sharing their passion for the arts. Members enjoy special ticketing offers to see world-class performances at a special discount rate. Members also receive invitations to exclusive Guilds and Center events.

But for its members, it’s the camaraderie that makes The Guilds so special. “I enjoy being part of the Sound of Music’s efforts to promote dance and musical theater in an inclusive way so everyone can enjoy it,” says Vanessa. “It makes the Center a special place.”

For more information about The Guilds of the Center or joining a chapter, please contact Emily Hunn, senior manager, support groups, at espicer@scfta.org.
