Welcome to Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl:
An Evening with Hugh Jackman!
We are overjoyed to share this spectacular start to summer with you, as we celebrate the power of live music and the community that makes it all possible. Tonight’s concert—featuring the extraordinary Hugh Jackman, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra led by Principal Conductor Thomas Wilkins, and inspiring young musicians from YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles)—marks the beginning of another unforgettable season under the stars.
Opening Night is also one of the LA Phil’s most meaningful traditions—not only artistically, but philanthropically. As a nonprofit organization, the LA Phil relies on the generosity of its supporters to bring the world’s greatest artists to this stage and to fund the Learning and community engagement programs that serve children and families across Southern California. We are especially proud that members of YOLA are performing this evening—a powerful reminder of what your
We are honored to come together with you to celebrate Opening Night of the Hollywood Bowl’s 2025 season and to kick off an exceptional summer of music. For more than 100 years, the Hollywood Bowl has been a testament to music’s power to nurture connection, from its first sunrise service and community sing-alongs to April’s We LA concert recognizing first responders and those affected by the LA wildfires. Your support helps us assure that the Bowl will continue to hold this unique place for many years to come.
A Los Angeles County Park operated by the LA Phil, the Hollywood Bowl attracts the world’s biggest stars across genres—classical, jazz, Broadway, rock, pop, rap, cumbia, and so much more—while offering tickets for as little as $1 so that music can be available to everyone.
support makes possible. Through YOLA, young musicians are given access to free instruments, intensive music instruction, academic resources, and the chance to shine on stages like this one.
To our Gala guests and donors: Thank you for making this work possible. To all of tonight’s concertgoers: Thank you for being part of the Hollywood Bowl family and helping us celebrate the joy of music in one of the most iconic venues in the world. Whether you’re a fan of The Music Man, The Greatest Showman, or simply the greatest night of the summer—welcome.

Tonight’s benefit also helps raise vital funding for YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), which provides students 6 to 18 years old with free musical instruction, instruments, and leadership training. These programs are building the next generation of musicians and music lovers.
It’s a thrill to have “The Greatest Showman” himself, Hugh Jackman, here to inaugurate the 2025 Bowl season. As his character P.T. Barnum says in that movie musical, “The noblest art is that of making others happy.” We couldn’t agree more! Thank you again for joining us tonight. We hope you enjoy this incredible evening.

Hugh Jackman is a multitalented actor, producer, and philanthropist. He is best known for his long-running role as Wolverine in the X-Men film series, as well as for his lead roles in the romantic-comedy fantasy Kate & Leopold, the action-horror film Van Helsing, the dramas The Prestige and The Fountain, the epic historical-romantic drama Australia, the film version of Les Misérables, and the thriller Prisoners. His work in Les Misérables earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and his first Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, in 2013. On Broadway, Jackman won a Tony
Award for his role in The Boy from Oz. A four-time host of the Tony Awards, he won an Emmy Award for one of these appearances. Jackman also hosted the 81st Academy Awards ceremony in 2009. His most recent appearance on Broadway was as Harold Hill in the revival of The Music Man. Jackman then co-starred in Marvel Studios’ 2024 blockbuster movie Deadpool & Wolverine. His upcoming films, scheduled to be released, are 3 Bags Full and Song Sung Blue. At present Jackman is in residency at Radio City Music Hall with a new live show titled From New York, With Love. Thomas Wilkins is Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He has held a titled position at the Hollywood Bowl since 2008, when he was named Principal Guest Conductor; in the spring of 2014, he became Principal Conductor.
In addition, he is the Boston Symphony’s Artistic Partner for Education and Community Engagement and Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor; Indiana University’s Henry A. Upper Chair of Orchestral Conducting, a position established by the late Barbara and David Jacobs; and Principal Guest Conductor of the Virginia Symphony. At the close of the 2020/21 season, he ended his long and successful tenure as Music Director of the Omaha Symphony. Other past positions include resident conductor of the Detroit Symphony and The Florida Orchestra (Tampa Bay) and associate conductor of the Richmond (VA) Symphony. He also has served on the music faculties of North Park University (Chicago), the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
Devoted to promoting a lifelong enthusiasm for music, Wilkins brings energy and commitment to audiences of all ages. He is hailed as a master at communicating and connecting with audiences. Following his highly successful first season with the Boston Symphony, The Boston Globe named him among the “Best People and Ideas of 2011.” In 2014, Wilkins received the prestigious Outstanding Artist award at the Nebraska
Governor’s Arts Awards for his significant contribution to music in the state, and in March 2018, the Longy School of Music at Bard College honored him with the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society. In 2019, the Virginia Symphony bestowed Wilkins with its annual Dreamer Award. In 2022, the Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award for Music, the Boston Conservatory awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Arts, and he was the recipient of the League of American Orchestras’ Gold Baton Award.
During his conducting career, Wilkins has led orchestras throughout the United States, including the New York and Los Angeles philharmonic orchestras; the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras; the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Boston, Cincinnati, and Detroit; and the National Symphony.
A native of Norfolk, VA, Thomas Wilkins is a graduate of the Shenandoah Conservatory and the New England Conservatory. He and his wife, Sheri-Lee, are the proud parents of twin daughters, Erica and Nicole.
The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is composed of approximately 65 regular players, an international mix of classically trained musicians who are among the best studio musicians in Los Angeles. Many spend their days on Hollywood’s scoring stages. It might be surprising to learn that there is no overlap between the musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and those of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra—another indicator that LA has a tremendous pool of musical talent.
Musicians have been performing at the Hollywood Bowl since its opening in 1922. “Bowl Orchestra” was used as early as 1925, and “Hollywood Bowl Orchestra” appeared on live recordings made in 1928. Leopold Stokowski was Music Director of the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra from 1945 to 1946. During that time, the orchestra recorded a number of classical works. In the 1950s and 1960s, Capitol Records issued an extensive series of recordings of the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra with a number of different conductors, including Carmen Dragon, Felix Slatkin, Alfred Newman, and Miklós Rózsa, with album titles such as Rhapsody Under the Stars Chopin by Starlight Fiesta!, and Marche!
From the 1950s on, there was no official Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, until it reappeared in 1991, under the auspices of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, as a completely new ensemble under the direction of Principal Conductor John Mauceri. After retiring from the orchestra in 2006, Mauceri was awarded the lifelong title of Founding Director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
In 2008, Thomas Wilkins began an appointment as Principal Guest Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In June 2014, he became the orchestra’s Principal Conductor, in which position he continues to lead the ensemble each summer in a wide range of concerts at the fabled outdoor venue.
From Mozart to Motown, the repertoire of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is as diverse as Hollywood itself. In a single season, the orchestra may perform everything from Broadway favorites to film music, pop music to jazz, and classical music to world premieres by living composers. In essence, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra does it all.

Through YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), inspired by Gustavo Dudamel’s own training as a young musician, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to over 1,700 young musicians—aged 6 to 18—locally and nationally, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. Eighteen years ago, the LA Phil and its community partners launched YOLA with 80 students at the EXPO Center in South LA. Today, in partnership with Heart of Los Angeles and Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, our program hubs serve students and families in the Rampart District, Westlake/MacArthur Park, East LA, and Inglewood. YOLA engages musicians from more
than 200 schools in culturally vibrant and ethnically diverse communities across LA County. Music study is complemented by leadership development opportunities, workshops, and performances. YOLA’s young musicians have performed on great stages, from the LA Phil’s iconic venues—the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall—to national and international television broadcasts, and alongside the greatest artists. On October 15, 2021, the Los Angeles Philharmonic opened the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by Gehry Partners, LLC, the first permanent, purposebuilt facility for YOLA. For more information, please visit laphil.com/yola .
For the young musicians of YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), performing at the Hollywood Bowl isn’t just another concert. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment. One musician called it “a dream come true.” Since 2012, YOLA students have had the opportunity to share the stage with world-renowned artists at one of the biggest and most highly anticipated concerts of the summer, Hollywood Bowl Opening Night.
This annual celebration not only kicks off the season in style—with incredible performances and a glamorous VIP pre-concert party—but also raises funds to support the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its Learning and community programs, including YOLA.
Over the last 13 years, the talented and enthusiastic musicians of YOLA have been a part of these unforgettable celebrations. In the weeks leading up to the gala concert, 10 to 20 YOLA musicians are selected by audition to participate in intensive rehearsals leading up to their big moment.
Looking back on their Opening Night memories, five YOLA alumni reflect on the joy, pride, and inspiration they carry with them.

Opening Night with Diana Ross (2018)
My most memorable moments were hanging out backstage and getting to see the crowd and stage from a new perspective. I remember the first time I stepped onto the stage for a concert, everyone seemed so small. At one point, the lights from the stage were so bright that the crowd just became one with the night.
I was so happy to see how many people came to see the LA Phil and that I was a part of their concert experience. Looking back, I realized how exciting it was for a teenager to play with the LA Phil. I realize that it’s one of those “time and place,” universedefining moments.
Karen Hernandez, oboe

Opening Night with John Legend (2019)
My first-ever Opening Night performance was right after I graduated high school. Sharing this experience with big-name artists, orchestral professionals, a sold-out crowd, and my friends at one of the most iconic venues felt incredibly surreal. [It was] a dream come true. I remember the excitement and adrenaline rush on performance day, walking on the stage and hearing loud cheers—my parents also being in the audience! I felt proud, ecstatic, and honored to have had the opportunity, which only affirmed my passion for a music career.
From my very first oboe class to this day, the program continues to provide accessibility and numerous performance opportunities for its students and alums. As someone [who started] with no musical background, I did not think I could ever come close to the experiences this program has provided and led me to. I have grown exponentially as a performer and no longer limit myself to where I can go and how far I can succeed.
Sergio Paez, violin
Class of 2021
Opening Night with Diana Ross; Gwen Stefani (2022)
In 2022, I was fortunate enough to have been selected to perform in an ensemble of YOLA alumni for Opening Night with Gwen Stefani and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. As alumni, preparing for the concert was a bit less extensive, as many of us in the ensemble had careers in performance and/or performed frequently. However, I was still super-excited and a bit nervous for our first rehearsal with the orchestra and with Gwen. We performed the last song of the night, “Hollaback Girl,” with the UCLA and USC marching bands!
I had not yet realized that this would be my first time onstage during a firework finale, so I was a bit confused when I heard the crowd cheer a bit louder than normal. It wasn’t until I smelled the smoke and lost sight of the crowd that I was able to process what was happening! To this day, I can still remember the feeling of accomplishment and pride, standing in front of a crowd of 17,000 people.
Yuriko Imada Terriquez, violin
Class of 2020
Opening Night with John Legend; Gwen Stefani
My very first performance [at the Bowl] will always hold a special place in my heart. My family and I were overwhelmed with emotion— we never imagined something like this could be possible. I remember coming home from school and practicing late into the night, using a makeshift mute to keep things quiet. I can still recall walking onstage and telling myself not to look at the crowd because I was so nervous. I just tried to focus on the music. When it was over, I felt like crying—I couldn’t believe I had just performed at the Hollywood Bowl. Even now, it feels surreal to say I’ve performed there.
Being a part of these moments has shaped me not just as a musician, but as a person. I carry the memory of that first night with me always—as a reminder of how far I’ve come and what’s possible when passion and perseverance come together— [even if it means] playing until 1am. That concert meant everything to me, especially knowing it would be the first time many of my family members would experience the magic of the Bowl.
Pablo Fernandez, violin
Class of 2023
Opening Night with John Legend; Janet Jackson (2023)
It’s an incredible feeling being onstage at the Bowl. Seeing the lights spread out across the audience is surreal. It’s really cool having strangers tell you they saw you on the big screens after the concert. It felt rewarding and made the work worth it. Sharing the stage with the professionals of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Maestro Thomas Wilkins was such an honor.
In the aftermath of the January wildfires that devastated parts of Altadena, Pacific Palisades, Topanga, and Malibu, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presented WE LA, a free community concert for first responders as well as families and individuals directly impacted by the crisis.
On April 1, Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel led the orchestra in a genre-spanning program featuring collaborations with global pop star Christina Aguilera, jazz pianist Gerald Clayton, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Palisades Charter High School Band, and surprise guest cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
This night was a reminder of what it means to belong to a city that refuses to break. “Your courage and commitment inspire us,” Dudamel said. “Together we will rebuild our city, stronger than ever.”
and
Lindsey

Zen-inspired Senior Living is coming to Ventura County.
Ensō Verde has been designed for those whom a love of nature is second nature. At this Zen-inspired mountainside community, life is celebrated, curiosity is encouraged, food is fresh, resources are renewable and art and culture are as essential as air and water.
Select residences are now available to reserve on a limited basis, with lucrative financial incentives for those who reserve before construction begins.
ZEN-INSPIRED SENIOR LIVING IN VENTURA COUNTY
