The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park June & July 2025
Serena: “I came here feeling really down and knocked around. It’s like I’m shedding a skin and evolving into something stronger, deeper, and more beautiful than when I walked through the Doors.”
Mia: “Nothing in life is linear. I discovered that with my cancer diagnosis. Here, I could feel myself transforming into who I needed to be, who I wanted to be. It’s about moving forward to the new you.”

Must-See Musicals
THE WINNER OF the 2014 Tony Award for “Best Musical,” A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, runs at North Coast Rep, July 16-Aug. 10. Monty Navarro (Andrew Polec) is a poor but ambitious nobody ho-humming his way through early 1900s London as a clerk. When his mother passes away, he learns he is ninth in line to become Earl of Highhurst, and only eight members of the obnoxious, aristocratic D’Ysquith family
stand in his way. Mysteriously, each family member begins to die off in morbidly hilarious ways. Noelle Marion directs. northcoastrep.org Cygnet Theatre stages Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical Oklahoma!, through July 27 at Old Town Theatre—with a fresh Cygnet spin on it. We follow cowboy Curly and farm girl Laurey, who are in love but struggle to openly admit it amid the 1906 Oklahoma Territory land rush. cygnettheatre.org

MILESTONES IN MOTION
LA JOLLA MUSIC SOCIETY’S SUMMERFEST 2025 HITS ALL THE HIGH NOTES by STEPHANIE SAAD
AS SUMMER ARRIVES, La Jolla prepares to unfurl its annual cultural gem: SummerFest, presented by La Jolla Music Society. From July 25 to August 23, 2025, The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center will once again transform into a vibrant hub for chamber music, this year under the intriguing theme of “Milestones.” Known for his innovative programming, Music Director and internationally acclaimed pianist,
Inon Barnatan, has curated a monthlong journey exploring pivotal moments in composers’ lives and the evolution of chamber music.
“As artists, we all carry our own milestones, those moments when something shifts, when we take a leap, find clarity, or suddenly see the path ahead,” says Barnatan. “Some are external—first perfor mances, big commissions, career breakthroughs. Others are deeply

personal and invisible to the outside world. This year’s festival is an invitation to explore those transformative moments in the lives of great composers: when they found their voice, took a creative risk, or broke new ground. But it’s also about the audience—about recognizing the milestones in our own lives and seeing how music can mark, mirror, and even shape those moments.”

The 39th annual SummerFest promises an extraordinary lineup of international artists, both returning favorites and exciting debuts. The roster reads like a who’s who of classical music—featuring violinists like Alan Gilbert, Tessa Lark, and the dynamic Njioma Chinyere Grevious (a recent Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient). Viola enthusiasts can look forward to the masterful playing of Owen Dalby and Stephen
Waarts; while cellists Alisa Weilerstein, Zlatomir Fung (winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition), and Nicolas Altstaedt will bring their profound artistry to the stage. On the piano, expect brilliance from talents such as Timo Andres, Matthew Aucoin, Inon Barnatan and Steven Osborne, among others. The festival also welcomes distinguished wind and brass players, including clarinetists Anthony McGill and Ricardo Morales; and horn players Mark Almond and Stefan Dohr. A highlight of SummerFest 2025 will be “The Glass Menagerie,” a unique presentation of Philip Glass’ complete Piano Études. A SummerFest 2023 concert
FROM THE PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Dear friends,
This summer we welcome you and your participation in a very special celebration—the 5th Anniversary Season of The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.
In the summer of 2021, we opened our hearts and this magnificent venue to the community, inspired by a vision of music, nature, and togetherness. What began as a bold idea on the San Diego Bay has become a beloved cultural landmark, where the power of live performance meets the beauty of the outdoors.
Since its inaugural season, The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park has been the permanent outdoor home of the San Diego Symphony and has hosted world-class artists, beloved symphonic performances, and unforgettable evenings under the stars. It has become more than a venue —it’s a symbol of creativity, resilience, and community spirit. This summer we reflect on the journey and look ahead to the future, and we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has made this milestone possible: our generous supporters, dedicated staff and volunteers, talented performers, and of course, you—our audience. Your presence, passion, and applause bring this space to life.
We invite you to celebrate not just a building or a season, but a shared dream that continues to grow. Thank you for being a part of our story. Here’s to the next five years of harmony, joy, and unforgettable memories at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.
With gratitude,
Martha A. Gilmer President and Chief Executive Officer
RAFAEL PAYARE MUSIC
DIRECTOR
With his innate musicianship, charismatic energy, gift for communication, and irresistibly joyous spirit, Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare is “electrifying in front of an orchestra” (Los Angeles Times). Payare conducted the San Diego Symphony (SDS) for the first time in January 2018 and was subsequently named the orchestra’s music director designate one month later, before assuming the role of music director in January 2019.
Now in the sixth season of his transformative tenure as music director of the San Diego Symphony, Payare will conduct a full roster of performances with the orchestra at the newly renovated Jacobs Music Center over the 2024-25 season, bookended by Mahler’s Second and Third Symphonies. Last season, Payare led the SDS for its first appearance in a decade at Carnegie Hall, its first performance in Tijuana in nearly 20 years, and in three programs at the inaugural California Festival. These engagements continued his transformative tenure with the orchestra, which also included their commercial album debut with Shostakovich’s 11th Symphony, The Year 1905.
Payare’s other recent highlights include debuts at the Royal Opera House, at the Edinburgh Festival, and with the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Orchestre national de France, and Staatskapelle Berlin, with which he reunited for Turandot at the Berlin State Opera this past summer.
The 2024-25 season also marks his third as Music Director of Canada’s Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (Montreal Symphony Orchestra/OSM). With the OSM he leads a similarly full season in
Montreal, tours to eight European cities with pianist Daniil Trifonov, and releases his third album with the orchestra on the Pentatone label—an allSchoenberg recording to mark the composer’s 150th anniversary. The conductor rounds out his season with high profile returns to the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Other current positions are Principal Conductor of Virginia’s Castleton Festival, a post he has held since 2015, and Conductor Laureate of Northern Ireland’s Ulster Orchestra, where he was Principal Conductor and Music Director from 2014 to 2019, making multiple appearances at London’s BBC Proms.
Since winning first prize at Denmark’s Malko Competition for Young Conductors in 2012, Payare has made debuts and forged longstanding relationships with many of the world’s preeminent orchestras. His U.S. collaborations include engagements with the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Symphony, while his notable European appearances include dates with the Bavarian Radio Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, and Vienna Philharmonic, which he has led at the Vienna Konzerthaus and Musikverein, on a Baltic tour, and at Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. n

SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY
HIGH SCHOOL AMBASSADORS
The San Diego Symphony’s mission is changing lives through music. This summer, 30 San Diego County teens go to experience that mission in action through the Symphony’s High School Ambassadors program—a paid summer internship that blends fun with job training and learning.
For two action-packed weeks, Ambassadors participated in workshops that focused on financial literacy, public speaking, resume and interview preparation, teamwork, and arts administration. They also met Symphony staff, musicians, and community leaders who shared the secrets of exciting arts careers. On the weekends, Ambassadors joined the Front of House team, working side-by-side with Symphony staff and volunteers at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.
As Ambassador Blake Ledezma said, “I had the best time, met some of the coolest new friends, and enjoyed every minute being at the Shell, and was blown away learning about venue management. Most importantly, I experienced a sort of revelation about where to go from here with my studies and career, all thanks to this program!”
Thank you for supporting the San Diego Symphony’s work to change lives through music!

ABOUT THE ARTIST
DOLLY PARTON
Dolly Parton is the most honored and revered multi-hyphenate of all time and was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her current album “Rockstar” made history by scoring the biggest album debut sales week of her seven-decade career and earning her six #1s on the Billboard charts - Top Rock Albums, Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Country Albums, Top Album Sales, Top Current Album Sales, and Independent Albums. The landmark album also claimed the #3 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, her highest position ever. Achieving 27 RIAA-certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards, she has had 26 songs reach #1 on the Billboard country charts, a record for a female artist. Parton is the first artist to have topped Billboard’s Adult Contemporary, Christian AC Songs, Hot Country Songs, Christian Airplay, Rock Digital Songs, Country Airplay and Dance/Mix Show Airplay radio charts. Parton became the first country artist honored as Grammy MusiCares Person of the Year given out by NARAS. She has 49 career Top 10 country albums, a record for any artist, and 120 career-charted singles over the past 50+ years. On October 17, 2023, she released her second New York Times Best Seller coffee table book in a trilogy called “Behind The Seams: My Life in Rhinestones.” The first of the series was bestselling coffee table book “Songteller: My Life in Lyrics.”
In 2014, the RIAA recognized her impact on recorded music with a plaque commemorating more than 100 million units sold worldwide. She has amassed eleven Grammy Awards and 52 nominations, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, 10 Country Music Association Awards, including Entertainer of the Year; five Academy of Country Music Awards, also including a nod for Entertainer of the Year; four People’s Choice Awards; and three American Music Awards. In 1999, Parton was inducted as a member of the coveted Country Music Hall of Fame.
Dolly has the largest fan base of all measured music artists in the YouGov database at #1 with 198 million. She has the #1 Q Score of all performers, solo and group. Dolly is one of only 25 celebrities in the E-poll database to have an E-score of 100 and has maintained that perfect rating for 8 years. She recently won Best Brand Award, Celebrity, Influencer and Fashion at the 2023 Licensing International Excellence Awards.
To date, Parton has donated over 255 million books to children around the world with her Imagination Library. Her children’s book, Coat of Many Colors, was dedicated to the Library of Congress to honor the Imagination Library’s 100 millionth book donation. In March of 2022, Parton released the book Run Rose Run which she co-authored with James Patterson which sat at # 1 on the New York Times Best Sellers List for 5 weeks, a record for this decade. She also released an accompanying album of the same name with original songs inspired by the book which reached #1 on three charts simultaneously --- Country, Americana/Folk and Bluegrass Albums. From her “Coat of Many Colors” while working “9 to 5,” no dream is too big and no mountain too high for the country girl who turned the world into her stage. n

His professional debut was starring alongside Lin Manuel Miranda as Benny in In The Heights Puerto Rico. Select theater credits include: Miss Saigon, Motown The Musical, Lazarus (with David Bowie), Shakespeare in the Park, Hurt Village (Katori Hall) and RENT. TV credits include: “All Rise” (CBS), “United States Of Al” (CBS) and “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll” (FX). n

The Finnish word Rajaton translates as “boundless” – a word that so accurately describes the way this six-voice a cappella ensemble approaches music. Regularly performing around a hundred concerts and workshops each year, Rajaton exposes their audiences to the kind of diversity of repertoire, singing style, and stage presentation that has made them a phenomenon on the world stage.
Performing at concert halls, churches, jazz and choral festivals, this distinct group of musicians approaches all styles of music with the same level of commitment and integrity, making it difficult to imagine an audience that they could not inspire, or a type of music they could not make their own. In their native Finland, Rajaton is a bona fide pop phenomenon, successfully bridging the gap that often exists between classical and mainstream convention.
In 2022, Rajaton celebrates 25 years of music-making with one double platinum, three platinum and eight gold records in Finland under their belt. Ever seeking new artistic challenges, the group has grown immeasurably through collaborations with other a cappella artists, including The King’s Singers and The Real Group, as well as productions with film directors and choreographers. But it is perhaps their deep passion for choral art, their generosity of spirit and their sheer enjoyment of singing that has won the hearts and acclaim of audiences and critics everywhere. Their energy – infectious; their ability to entertain and inspire – Rajaton!
The voice is boundless. n

TO BE ANNOUNCED ON STAGE
ABOUT THE ARTIST
EARTH, WIND & FIRE
Earth, Wind & Fire are a music institution. In 1969, music legend Maurice White birthed the music force named after the elements from his very own astrological charts. With soul as deep as the plant, Earth, Wind & Fire charted a history that will live on forever. They’ve scored eight number one hits and have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. They’ve released 23 albums; eight of those albums went Double Platinum and hit the Top 10, making them one of the best-selling artists of all time. They’ve won an impressive nine GRAMMY® Awards including one for Lifetime Achievement (2012). In 2000, Earth, Wind & Fire was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their lasting impact on popular music and, in 2019, their contributions to arts and culture was acknowledged in Washington DC with the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.
The music of Earth, Wind & Fire is more alive than ever as they continue to inspire new audiences and thrill those who have been with them from the beginning. Like the elements in their name, Earth, Wind & Fire’s music has withstood ever-changing trends in the world and shows no sign of vanishing as they continue to create joy and uplifting music that will forever reach a sacred universal atmosphere. From the funky and infectious “Let’s Groove” to the timeless dance classic “September” to the heartfelt “Reasons,” Earth, Wind & Fire’s catalog of hits has become the soundtrack to many lives; now, then and forever. n

Building a Sound Tomorrow
Jacobs Music Center Renovation and Endowment Campaign
Under the leadership of Music Director Rafael Payare and Chief Executive Officer Martha Gilmer, the San Diego Symphony has completed a historic renovation of its indoor home. The renovation of The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Music Center complements The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park and provides San Diego with two extraordinary venues designed to celebrate music and community. Likewise, in the same way that these venues promise an ever-brighter future, the San Diego Symphony Foundation’s endowment provides long-term financial stability for the organization, ensuring that the power of live music continues to inspire and uplift our community for generations to come.
PLAY A PART IN BUILDING THE SYMPHONY’S FUTURE
The San Diego Symphony Foundation manages our Endowment, the cornerstone of our long-term stability and artistic excellence. By contributing to the Endowment, donors play a crucial role in sustaining our orchestra’s ability to present world-class performances, expand our educational outreach, and foster innovation in the arts. We invite you to join us in this enduring legacy by supporting the Endowment, securing the future of music in San Diego, and leaving an indelible mark on our cultural landscape.
NAME A SEAT!
The beauty of the newly renovated Jacobs Music Center will be most enjoyed from the reconfigured seating in the hall. We ask you to join this historic campaign by investing in the San Diego Symphony and NAMING A SEAT. The named seats serve as a celebration of all individuals who helped make the renovation possible. With a gift of $10,000, you can name a seat on the Orchestra level, or with a gift of $25,000, you can name a seat in the Grand Tier. Your contribution can be pledged and paid over a period of one to five years.
A gift toward the renovated Jacobs Music Center supports the orchestra, elevates the audience experience, and impacts the growing vitality of downtown San Diego. To learn more, send an email to: campaign@sandiegosymphony.org

“The Glass Études evening is going to be electric,” says La Jolla Music Society Artistic Director Leah Rosenthal. “We’ll hear 10 different pianists—each with their own style and voice—take on Philip Glass’s iconic Études in one night. These pieces are hypnotic and full of emotional power; and with this amazing lineup, the whole evening promises to be both intimate and thrilling.”
Beyond traditional concerts, SummerFest continues its commitment to cross-genre exploration with the innovative Synergy Series, co-produced by Barnatan and Clara Wu Tsai. These events invite leading creators from music, dance, spoken word and visual arts to collaborate; creating unexpected and powerful performances.
A particularly intriguing event within this series is “Tasting Notes,” featuring James Beard Awardwinning author and culinary superstar, J. Kenji López-Alt. This unique evening will explore the connections between gastronomy and music, pairing musical selections with specially prepared food courses and cooking demonstrations.
“‘Tasting Notes’ is one
of the most unexpected and joyful expressions of what SummerFest is all about: connection, creativity and curiosity,” Barnatan says. “At first glance, music and food might seem like very different worlds. But both are built on craft, instinct and the desire to move people. In this event, we bring together brilliant musicians and a culinary mind as inventive and expressive as any composer—J. Kenji López-Alt—to create a truly multisensory experience. While the musicians perform works by Dvořák and others, Kenji and a rotating cast of guest chefs cook live onstage—creating dishes that reflect and respond to the music. It’s not about illustrating one with the other; it’s a shared conversation between two disciplines that thrive on nuance, contrast and the element of surprise. And for the audience, it’s a chance to engage with both music and food in a completely new way:

These concerts provide a relaxed yet immersive way to experience some of the repertoire’s “greatest hits,” including works by Mozart and Arvo Pärt. The festival’s theme, “Milestones,” will be woven throughout the programming—highlighting pivotal moments in musical history and personal artistic journeys. Audiences will have the opportunity to experience the “spark of youthful experimentation; the mid-career breakthroughs that redefined boundaries; and the poignant final reflections that cemented legendary legacies.” From the dramatic Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, performed by opera superstar Renée Fleming with Alan Gilbert leading

“‘For the End of Time’ is one of the most moving programs of the festival,” Rosenthal says. “Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is a piece that stays with you; it’s deeply spiritual and hauntingly beautiful. And I’m so excited that Renée Fleming will be joining us to sing Strauss’ Four Last Songs, with Alan Gilbert conducting. It’s going to be an unforgettable evening of music that speaks to the heart.”
She adds, “‘Strung Together’ really captures the adventurous spirit of SummerFest. I’m especially looking forward to hearing a work by our composer-in-residence, Jessie Montgomery; her music is bold, fresh and full of feeling. The program also includes iconic works by Dvořák
