Cooking 101

Some people find cookbooks intimidating. All those strange ingredients, new words, odd baking dishes (au gratin dish?), and the final result often doesn’t look like the photo in the book.

Samin Nosrat is here to help. The chef and writer will visit the Center for one night only with Good Things: An Evening with Samin Nosrat September 25 in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

Nosrat’s cookbooks are different. Her first, Salt Fat Acid Heat, released in 2017, introduces readers to the fundamentals of good cooking. It was a New York Times Bestseller, won a bushel of awards and was turned into a limited series of the same name on Netflix. The premise of both the book and the streaming show is to teach “how to be a good cook, from the ground up.”

This San Diego native didn’t learn to cook until she was an adult, but when she did she learned from the best. While a student at UC Berkeley, Nosrat got a job at Alice Waters’ renowned Chez Panisse, starting bussing tables and eventually working her way up to the kitchen as a chef. She made quite an impression on Waters, who calls her “America’s next great cooking teacher.” Nosrat subsequently worked in

Italy and at other Bay-area restaurants.

During the pandemic Nosrat launched a podcast that shared her love of cooking with listeners around the world. Her warm and human approach to cooking, its processes and pleasures have garnered her millions of fans. In September, her second book will be released: Good Things: Recipes and Rituals to Share with the People You Love. At her Center appearance, she will discuss the inspiration for the book, the development of recipes, and how she infuses them with her trademark blend of creativity and precision. Samin likes to remind her fans that cooking can not only nourish our bodies but also satisfy our desire for kinship and community. Join us to experience just how easy it can be to do both.

John + ETHEL

John Clayton’s name is well known in jazz— and Center—circles. He’s a Grammy® winner (with nine additional nominations), composer, arranger, conductor, producer, educator, and oh, he plays the double bass. It runs in the family.

John’s late brother was Jeff Clayton, with whom he created the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (with drummer Jeff Hamilton). His son is Gerald Clayton, an up-and-coming jazz pianist who will be performing in the Jazz Series himself later in the season.

John opens this season’s Jazz Series in September performing with ETHEL, the string quartet that has been called “indefatigable and eclectic” by The New York Times and “vital and brilliant” by The New Yorker. Playing traditional string quartet instruments, “ETHEL offered a heady mix of new and newer music in a program that seemed intent on undermining expectations—though in a thoroughly genial way,” says SFGate.com. “The repertoire ranged widely and happily through the contemporary playground.”

ETHEL performs with an array of musicians, ranging from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the New York Chamber Symphony to Sheryl Crow, Roger Daltry, and Todd Rundgren. “ETHEL has been gleefully persistent in advocating for new music,” says Gramophone.com.

Clayton is a “multi-talented musician,” says Jazzmusicarchives.com. “A brilliant bassist whose

bowed solos are exquisite, Clayton is also a topnotch arranger and composer.” His career has gone from jazz to classical music and back again. He began on tours with the Monty Alexander Trio and the Count Basie Orchestra, then moved to Amsterdam to play principal bass with the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Five years later, on his return to the U.S., he co-founded the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra. He also taught at several Southern California universities

Clayton has worked with a wide range of artists including Milt Jackson, Diana Krall, DeeDee Bridgewater, Paul McCartney, Gladys Knight, Queen Latifah, McCoy Tyner, Yo Yo Ma, and Charles Aznavour.

“I’ve been guided by a village of musicians who helped me understand the humility that goes along with playing music at the highest level you can,” says Clayton. “Ray Brown used to tell me, ‘Learn how to play the bass!’ Just take care of the music and it will take care of you.”

He is certainly taking care of his music and audiences will love this combo. It’s a thrilling opener to an exciting and eclectic season.

Feel the Cuban vibes

Cuban rhythms will be spicing up the Center this August when the Buena Vista Orchestra takes up its instruments for a one-night only concert. Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos, an original member of the Buena Vista Social Club (BVSC), leads the band, which includes two other members of the BVSC and several members of Estrellas de Arieto and the Afro-Cuban Allstars.

Ramos is best known as the original orchestra leader, composer and trombonist of BVSC, which has brought the music of the original BVSC back into international prominence. “This is a celebration of the music and heritage of my nation, and I’m honored to share it with the American people,” says Ramos. This is Cuban music played by Cubans sharing the beauty and power of their native sounds. “To be immersed in the colorful, revivifying type of preservation practiced by the BVSC is to understand the value of such an

exercise,” says the and women make music that might otherwise drift to the wayside, lifting up a people, a genre and its multitude of virtues so that a roomful of people can sway and clap their hands in blissful appreciation.”

Juliet has a mind of her own

What if Juliet Capulet woke from her drugged sleep in the family tomb, found Romeo Montague dead next to her, and said, “Well, that was a lucky escape.” It might be harsh, but if the play about doomed young lovers had been written by a woman, it might have had a completely different ending. That’s what Anne Hathaway Shakespeare explains to her husband William in the hit musical & Juliet, coming to the Center next month.

After finding her alive, Juliet’s parents want to put her in a convent, but she is rescued by friends. Juliet is about to get the new beginning she wants, without men telling her what she should do. She heads to Paris with her gal pals and they crash a party where she meets Francois, who sparks her interest. Things look good until someone from Juliet’s past shows up. Will she make her own choice this time? Is she still carrying a torch for Romeo? Will she have a happy ending? So many questions!

“The show grabs hold of Shakespeare’s play and gives it a #girlboss makeover by asking: what if Juliet lived?” says the Guardian. “The humor, high-octane production and, yes, the songs, make it irresistible.”

Her story bursts to life through a playlist of

iconic pop songs you know and love—in ways you’ll never expect—including “Since U Been Gone‚” “Roar,” “Baby One More Time,” “Larger Than Life‚” “That’s The Way It Is,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”

“These songs have soundtracked our lives,” says the Guardian, “and it feels like giving the inner child a big hug to hear them sung with such life-affirming joy.”

& Juliet was written by David West Read, the Emmy®–winning writer from Schitt’s Creek, and this hilarious new musical flips the script on the greatest love story ever told. “Break free of the balcony scene and get into this romantic comedy that proves there’s life after Romeo,” says Broadwaysd.com, while Variety says, “It’s the most fun you’ll have in a theater right now.”

It would be a tragedy to miss it.

A new way to enjoy chamber music

How about experiencing some Schubert chamber music the way his friends might have listened to him perform his newest composition: in the intimate setting of a home lit by candlelight, while perhaps enjoying a glass of wine.

This season the Center’s Chamber Music Series has a new look. Samueli Theater seating will be arranged with small tables seating four people, similar to the setting for jazz and cabaret performances, allowing easy accessibility. We have new, comfortable chairs in place, and patrons can enjoy beverages while listening to some of the leading chamber musicians in the world. Candlelight will illuminate the theater, making it much like a salon experience in the 19th century.

Enjoy some returning quartets and some Center debuts. Two quartets are premiering new works commissioned for the Center by local chamber supporters Justice and Elizabeth Schlichting.

The Calidore String Quartet makes its third appearance in the chamber series with Haydn’s playful “Largo” and Beethoven’s profoundly spiritual String Quartet No. 12. Also on the bill is a new piece by British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, who is a significant creative figure in British music, and his piece is one of our Schlichting commissions.

The Calidore, founded in Los Angeles, is known for its broad chamber music repertoire, ranging from Beethoven to contemporary composers. The Washington Post says, “Four more individual musicians are unimaginable, yet these speak, breath, think and feel as one.”

Photo: Marco Borgreve

The Takács Quartet is another favorite of Center audiences. Based in Boulder, Colorado, the Takács is known for its innovative programming. It has also had the benefit of a Schlichting commission this season: String Quartet by Clarice Asada, an inventive composer who is a leading voice in new music, as well as a big name in the jazz world. It will be performed with Haydn’s elegant String Quartet Op. 74 and Debussy’s String Quartet.

The Phaeton Piano Trio unites Friedemann Eichhorn, Peter Hörr, and Florian Uhlig, three top German solo artists of international renown, to form one of the most exciting piano trios on the international concert scene. For their debut at the Center, the trio will present a traditional program featuring Schubert’s melancholy Notturno, Saint-Saëns’ evocative “La Muse et le Poete,” and Beethoven’s “Archduke” trio. The three artists, based in East Germany, have received accolades from critics who call their performances “spirited and virtuosic,” “fantastic,” and “masterful.” As soloists each has an extensive discography and are unsurpassed in their musicianship.

Fresh off presenting their own chamber music festival in Germany last year, the Goldmund Quartet is known for its “exquisite playing” and its interpretations of the great classical and modern works of the quartet literature. The youthful members are counted as the leading string quartet among a younger generation and have already won the prestigious International Wigmore Hall String Competition. It makes its Center debut with a program that spans centuries of musical brilliance. They will perform Haydn, who invented the quartet form in the 18th century, 20th century Polish neo-classical composer Grażyna Bacewicz, and Schubert’s passionate Death and the Maiden, an offering from the 19th century.

“The best part of performing Death and the Maiden is to feel the impact the music has every time on us as performers as well as the audiences,” the players told The Strad. “No one remains untouched.”

Photo: Ian Malkin
Photo: Guido Werner
Photo: Gregor Hohenberg

The Notos Quartett is also making its Center debut. Founded nearly 20 years ago, this piano quartet announced itself by winning first prize in six major international competitions early in its career. The ensemble has been praised for its virtuosity, passion, sensitivity and mature interpretive powers. The vision of the members is not only to perform the well-known masterpieces, but also to reveal lost and forgotten treasures and champion new compositions for the unique genre of the piano quartet.

For this diverse program the quartet will perform Mozart’s poignant Piano Quartet in G minor, Walton’s dramatic Piano Quartet D minor and Schumann’s romantic Piano Quartet.

Praised for its versatility and electrifying stage presence, the Ébène Quartet returns to the series for a third engagement with the Center. Their mastery of the quartet repertoire has made them the recipients of major music awards, but they look beyond just one genre. Improvising on jazz standards and pop songs that began in 1999 as a distraction in the university’s practice rooms has become a trademark of the Ébène Quartet. The New York Times highlighted the group’s versatility, describing them as “a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band.” For the Center’s concert, the group will perform Beethoven’s spirited String Quartet in G Major, Ravel’s sensuous Quartet in F Major, and back to Beethoven for the sublime Quartet in C-sharp minor. But you never know what this ensemble will do for an encore.

When you think of music from Australia, are didgeridoos the first sound that comes to mind? That will change when you hear the 17-member Australian Chamber Orchestra. Founded in 1975, it has been led by Artistic Director Richard Tognetti since 1990. Tognetti is recognized internationally as a violin soloist, ensemble player, leader, composer, arranger, and conductor. For its Center engagement, the orchestra will take us through the centuries of musical expression including Purcell, Fanny Mendelssohn, Ralph Vaughn Williams, and an immersive new work by John Luther Adams.

“The ACO turns 50 [this year]; Tognetti has been its leader for 35 years,” says the Guardian (UK). “The young firebrand has become its senior figure. But some things haven’t changed: the intensity, the fearlessness, the curiosity.” The Times (UK) hailed one of its appearances, saying, “This must be the best chamber orchestra on earth.”

This promises to be an exciting season in so many ways. From the moment you enter and sit down, you’ll wonder how you ever enjoyed live chamber music any other way.

Letter from Neil

The idea of a Broadway musical about my life has always been a daunting one. It wasn’t until the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease prematurely ended my touring career that I started to seriously consider the prospect. I say “prematurely” because my heart and soul would tour until the day I die if only my body would cooperate.

My friend and longtime producer Bob Gaudio had some success with his little show, Jersey Boys (perhaps you’ve heard of it?), so I went to him for some guidance on where to begin. Bob brought in Ken Davenport and together they built the incredible creative team that became A Beautiful Noise

When Anthony McCarten came on board, we spent hours talking. It was his idea to frame the show in the context of therapy sessions. I loved the idea and never shied away from talking about my years of psychoanalysis. There used to be a stigma around talking about mental health, and thankfully through the years, it’s become an important and accepted topic of conversation.

Sitting in the theater and watching the show has itself been therapeutic: reliving some joyful and some of the painful parts of my life, wishing perhaps that if I could only make a few edits in the script, it would change some of the reality of what I was seeing. But in the end, coming to terms with my life and accepting it has somehow come full circle. I feel fortunate and full of gratitude for all the people in my life. It is each of them who have impacted and shaped me in their own way to get me to the place where I am now… a better man. A better father. A better husband. A better songwriter.

I’d like to thank Marcia and Jaye, this story wouldn’t be possible without you. My children and grandchildren for your most important supporting roles in my life. My wife, Katie, who encouraged me to keep going through this process and finally, to Dr. Lu Katzman, my longtime therapist who inspired this story. May she rest in peace.

“The most fun you’ll have on Broadway! A smart, laugh-out-loud shot of pure gold. Exactly what we need right now.” —Variety

A perfect Headliners season

Omne trium perfectum. A trio of Latin words that convey a simple philosophy: “Everything that comes in threes is perfect.”

The Headliners Series’ new season features three female vocalists who have made it big on Broadway to become legends: Lea Salonga, Jessica Vosk and Patti LuPone. In fact, one of our stars is a Disney Legend. This season is certainly going to be perfect.

When the theatrical hit Miss Saigon was being cast, producers looked far and wide, including the Philippines, for its star, the character of Kim. It was there that they auditioned a 17-year-old named Lea Salonga. She was talented and her voice was phenomenal, but she was young. Could she handle the pressure of singing to an audience in a 2,000-seat theater eight times a week? Salonga told them she had recently opened for Stevie Wonder in concert. She was hired. (She won a Tony® Award when she brought the role to Broadway.)

Salonga stunned the world with her heartwrenching portrayal of Kim. But she had been acting in star roles before she was a teen. Today Salonga is truly an international star. She recently starred in Stephen Sondheim’s Old

Friends, which ran in London and Los Angeles before moving to Broadway. Co-cast member Bernadette Peters told The New York Times, “Salonga has one of the great Broadway voices, and she just brings down the house.”

Salonga performs songs from musicals in which she has starred, as well as some favorite showtunes familiar to the audience. (She adores Sondheim.) She also puts new spins on some pop songs, such as voice and guitar duet of the ’80s classic “Take On Me,” by A-ha. Salonga is our Disney Legend, a title bestowed upon her after she was the voice of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Lulan in Mulan, so there might be a whole new world of songs to share. There’s really no doubt that her performance at the Center will be a great show.

After she graduated from college, Jessica Vosk worked on Wall Street and was very successful, but she knew in her heart (and by her soaring blood pressure) this wasn’t the right gig for her: She needed to sing. She quit, and the rest is Broadway history. Now she returns for her third engagement at the Center and is ready to turn Christmas music upside down with her new show, Sleigh. Vosk brings her signature wit and sparkle to create a special spin on holiday classics and brand-new carols.

After leaving her non-singing job, Vosk worked her way up the Broadway chain until she hit the big one: the role of Elphaba in Wicked She donned the green makeup and joined a national tour, returning two years later to take

over the same role on Broadway. She has gone on to star in other hits, including Waitress, Finding Neverland, and Hell’s Kitchen. Vosk also sold out two solo shows at Carnegie Hall.

A review by BroadwayWorld.com of one of her concert performances here at the Center says, “A wow-inducing show filled with whipsmart, laugh-out-loud humor, fun personal stories and some of the most stunning vocal riffs I’ve heard sung live. Ms. Vosk proves why she has deservedly become one of the stage’s favorite musical theater divas.”

“With her “powerhouse and pristine vocals” (Playbill) Vosk will redefine holiday magic in ways you never imagined. It will be a sweet treat for everyone.

Patti LuPone is a Broadway diva, in the best possible way. No matter what her show is about, she has a voice range that goes through the highs and lows and brings to life all the emotions of every song she sings. That’s not surprising for a threetime Tony winner. For her Center appearance we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Matters of the Heart, her exploration of song literature devoted to the trials and triumphs of love.

LuPone has brought to life many of the most famous shows on Broadway, including Sondheim’s Company, the revival of Gypsy, and the title role of Evita in the original Broadway production. Matters of the Heart has had extended runs on Broadway and in London’s West End, and it certainly has a place in, well, her heart.

She will have no trouble tearing a heart out and building it up again, and she has some

surprises up her sleeve. It’s not all show tunes as you might expect but also includes contemporary songwriters. LuPone has been known to pull out a Beach Boys song (“God Only Knows”) and Cyndi Lauper with a tender rendition of “Time After Time.” Although in real life LuPone is happily married, she will remind guests that the course of true love never did run smooth.

“Sometimes love comes right to us,” LuPone said to a recent audience, “but sometimes we have to go looking for it … like pigs hunting for truffles.” That may not sound romantic (unless you are a gourmand), but when has she ever been one not to speak her mind? She surprised a recent audience with a beautiful rendition of the ’70s ballad “Air That I Breathe” by the Hollies. “In LuPone’s softly swooning interpretation, it becomes a tribute to the overpowering power of love,” says Variety

Fans of all three of our stars will agree that this makes the perfect Headliners season. Buy your subscription now.

Amplifying gifts from our Friends

Friends of the Center is a large group of performing arts enthusiasts who enjoy a good show. Your Friends membership helps bring electrifying performances to Southern California audiences, provide vital and in-depth arts education in schools, supports free community programs like Movie Mondays and other free fun on Julianne and George Argyos Plaza, and much, much more! Being a Friend deepens your connection to the Center.

But some Friends like to encourage others to increase their giving through the new Friends’ Artistry Amplified program. This is a matching donation that doubles every gift made through an identified campaign period. Dave Tabb was our first champion donor.

Tabb, who is one of the Center’s top groupsales ticket buyers, often brings friends from Los Angeles and Orange County to enjoy exciting Center performances. He has a vision of bringing in more audiences through subsidized tickets. To launch that effort, earlier this year he offered Friends a matching campaign in which he would double every donation over a two-month period to raise $15,000. The Artistry Amplified challenge was successfully met and inspired others.

Our second champion donor was Vanessa Moore. Her favored program is the Center’s

Studio D: Arts School for All Abilities. Moore is also a member of the Sound of Music Guild, which focuses on supporting the school. Studio D was founded in 2017 to serve children with physical disabilities and neurodivergence. It has expanded to also serve adults, and classes for all ages include musical theater, adaptive ballet, and theater acting skills. It’s the only program of its kind in the region and is very popular.

Moore was delighted that the matching challenge met its goal. “I have such special place in my heart for Studio D,” she said. “The children and adults are so excited to have these music and dance classes to enjoy and have the arts in their lives.”

Doubling the amount of a donation can really make a difference for what the Center can do. $75 can provide visual art materials for audience engagement activities on the Plaza and $125 can provide tickets for 25 students to see an On Stage performance at the Center. For $500 we can provide sensory tools and small instruments for Studio D: Arts School for All Abilities. The next opportunity to double your donation will be in September, when we announce our next Artistry Amplified matching gift. But you can join Friends any time and be part of this dedicated group of Center supporters.

Friends receive exclusive benefits including a Center Rewards Card. This personal membership card entitles our valued patrons to receive special offers and member-only discounts from area retailers and restaurants. Depending on giving level, Friends also can experience backstage tours, dance cast parties, and behind-the-scenes events.

We thank you in advance for your support of the Center, and we are always happy to answer any questions you may have about becoming a member. For more information, contact friends@scfta.org.
