Revealing Bertioga

The sensitive eye of amateur and professional photographers captured images of our exciting and surprising city by Sheila Mazzolenis Forty-seven photography artists – amateurs, mostly – staged one of the most significant and successful shows held this year at the coast of São Paulo. Appropriately named “Collective Exhibition Revealing Bertioga” it was mounted at the Park of Tupiniquins forming an integrating part of an even larger event called “Revela Bertioga” (Revealing Bertioga). “We are all photographers at heart” says Du Zuppani, social-environmental photographer, Secretary of Tourism, Trade and Nautical Matters of Bertioga, and creator of the event. “We look, observe and thrill: some click, some do not, and many would like to. And these are the people we want to reach and stimulate from now on, because with the support of the City and the Municipal Councils of Tourism and Cultural Policies we intend to hold the event ‘Revela Bertioga’ annually, repeating the formula that worked in this first edition: photo exhibition of both amateurs and renowned professionals, lectures and workshops (see table). At the same time, we want to encourage one of the fastest growing open-air activities – social-environmental photography and bird watching – and consolidate Bertioga as a destination of photographic expeditions. With an advantage: the city is photogenic all year round!”

According to the curator of the show, Zé Zuppani 47 photographers were selected – among more than 100 entries – and 65 photographs chosen from nearly 500 submitted, all showing different angles of the city also contributed to the success of the event, an exhibition of several professional photographers – among them Renato soares, andré dib, fabio Knoll and sérgio Ranalii – as well as workshops and lectures on the many different aspects of the art of photography. The highlight was the presentation of the trophy Buriqui to Araquém Alcântara, one of the pioneers of nature photography in Brazil, recognized worldwide. Author of 44 books, Araquém has already received five international and 33 national awards.
