Kindergarten – Year 12

Our diverse Co-curricular Activities offers all students the opportunity to participate in various activities. We encourage our students to participate as it enriches classroom learning, fosters positive relationships, and strengthens their belonging and engagement in our community.

The Co-curricular Activities are categorised into: Physical Activities, Heart and Mind Activities and Creative and Performing Arts Activities.

Co-curricular Activity Registration

Registration for Term 4 Co-curricular Activities, will be made available via Sentral. Activities that have a maximum number of students, registration will be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Cost

Activity costs are per term and will be charged to school accounts.

All Co-curricular activities will commence in week 2 and conclude in week 5.

Physical

These activities promote physical well-being, health, and fitness, aiming to develop exercise, sports, and physical challenges, aiming to develop students’ physical skills, teamwork, coordination, and overall fitness.

Heart and Mind

Heart and Mind Activities focus on the holistic development of students by engaging their emotional and intellectual selves. These activities encourage awareness of self and others incorporating emotional intelligence, critical thinking, mindfulness and service learning.

Performing and Creative Arts

These activities involve artistic expression and performance, nurturing creativity in various disciplines such as music, dance, drama, visual arts, and more. They provide opportunities for students to explore and showcase their artistic abilities.

Robotics Club is for student in Years 5 – 6 to dive into the exciting world of robotics and engineering. Students work together in teams to build, program, and compete with their own robots starting from basic construction and coding, all the way to testing, troubleshooting, and rebuilding for competitions. It’s hands-on, creative, and a great way to develop problem-solving and teamwork skills while having fun!

Students are required to bring their own laptop.

Writing Rulz @ SMGS is a dynamic and engaging cocurricular activity designed to inspire and motivate Stage 2 students to develop their writing skills and reach their full potential. This program focuses on teaching the structure and techniques of narrative and persuasive writing, equipping students with the tools they need to express their ideas effectively and creatively.

Publishing Days

At the end of each term, parents, carers, and friends are invited to celebrate the students’ progress during a special Publishing Afternoon event. Held on the second last Friday of each term, after school, these events showcase the students’ hard work as their written pieces are shared and celebrated with the school community.

Students will

• Gain confidence in writing for different purposes and audiences.

• Learn to plan, draft, edit, and publish their work.

• Receive encouragement and support to explore their creativity and refine their skills.

• Take pride in their accomplishments as their writing is shared with a real audience.

Please bring your favourite writing pencil or pen!

Collaborating with local run coach, Pablo Urena from Jindy Runners/Chase Running Co., our students will utilise the oval for running drills, challenges and games, focussing on fun and fitness under the warm Jindy sun!

Appropriate running attire is required (i.e. running shoes, weather appropriate clothing, sun hat, water bottle).

Note: Junior School students are welcome to attend the Senior Run Club (Fridays 7:00 – 7:45 am) if they can prove a Sub 27min - 5km time. If they wish to join, evidence of a sub 27min 5km time must be submitted to Mr Bland for approval.

In STEM Design and Make Club, K–6 student will explore creativity and problem-solving by designing, building, and testing projects. They will develop teamwork, critical thinking, and innovation through engaging hands-on challenges.

Netball season runs from 21 October 2025 - 31 March 2026, with a break over Christmas. Teams will be required to practice at school in the lead up to the competition.

Teams will be finalised then and stay together for the whole season. Teams are expected to do a couple of duties every season where they score, help on the BBQ and referee if they feel confident to do this. It’s great if parents/carers can get involved when there is duty, mainly to help on the BBQ.

Teams play in their school sports uniform. No jewellery is permitted. JNA will not let you tape earrings (even if they are new piercings) so please ensure you take earrings out. Bibs will be provided for team captains to take care of and wash after each game.

Students in Years K-6 are invited to prepare healthy lunchbox favourites and learn skills for independent preparation of lunchbox meals. Students walk away with fresh food samples each week.

Aprons will be supplied.

Students develop ensemble skills in Band on Thursday afternoons. The band works together to produce performances for school-based events – eg Assembly.

Students are required to supply their own instruments. (Can be negotiated with Mrs Sell)

Junior MTB (Beginner) Rider’s Club will be facilitated by MTB Academy staff and support staff to cater for students with varying ability and fitness levels. During the sessions, the primary focus is enhancing students’ bike handling skills, developing confidence, riding safety, and fostering a love of riding bikes through a games- based approach. But, most importantly, we are going to just ride bikes and have FUN!

Pre-requisite skills: No bikes with training wheels. Students must be able to take off and stop on their own.

Students are asked to bring: Mountain Bike in good working order, helmet and covered elbows (either jersey or elbow pads), fullfingered gloves are compulsory. It is also recommended that students wear a small (with 1L water) hydration bladder bag, a spare snack/muesli bar and a spare tube. SMGS MTB jersey is not mandatory, but is available from our uniform shop.

Students go to Warhammer Club to engage in model building, painting and table-top gaming activities. Participants have the option to bring their own models or work on club-provided models. These models are then assembled into armies, and exciting battles are staged, allowing students to test their strategies and enjoy friendly competition.

Students may bring their own Warhammer models, rules, dice and ruler. Models, paints and other equipment are available for new members.

Students meet at the school to run for 30-45 minutes, typically covering distances ranging from 3 to 5 kilometres. Students may run in small groups according to personal pace and preference. At times we may transport students on a school bus to run a local trail.

A light breakfast is provided after the run at the school.

Permission to transport students on a bus as required.

Appropriate running attire is required (i.e. running shoes, weather appropriate clothing, sun hat, water bottle).

Students with greater experience in band/ensemble setting meet Friday mornings before school to improve and perform together for school-based events as well as external events in the community.

Students will work to develop and refine speaking and debating skills. Those who show reliability, sustained interest, involvement and skills in debating may be selected to represent the School in the National Virtual Debating competition which commences usually by the start of Term 2.

Students are required to bring laptops, pens and paper.

Aperture (the SMGS Astronomy Club) is for students who have an interest in Astronomy. The club is called Aperture because it is the opening through which we view the cosmos. We aim to foster a shared passion for astronomy, exploring the night sky through guided observations, discussions and general astronomical events.

Aperture meets every month on school grounds around the New Moon when the sky is dark and better for observations.

Please register your interest with Dr Nelson and keep an eye out for upcoming dates.

Students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award are encouraged to come to the library at lunchtime on Fridays to access assistance with the administrative component of the Award Program. This includes assistance with finding activities to be involved in, logging hours on the ORB, completing Adventurous Journey reports and general questions regarding participation in the program. Students only need to attend this session as required rather than on a regular basis.

Students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award will attend a number of expeditions in wilderness environments to fulfill the Adventurous Journey component of the Award. These journeys are generally held at the end of each school term in different local, regional and international locations. Students participating in the Award program will be sent an invitation to attend a journey six weeks prior to the journey. A compulsory after school training session will be held a few weeks prior to the journey where students will receive navigation and campcraft training.

The SMGS Equestrian Academy (EA) is a specialised program catering for beginner to advanced riders, boarding and day students, the program will provide increased opportunities for all riders to work towards their personal best and beyond in a number of equestrian disciplines. As part of the AE program, we are also pleased to offer boarding and day students the provision of agistment, located adjacent to the Jindabyne Pony Club.

The SMGS MTB Program runs for a full day on Wednesdays during Term 1, 2 and 4 as a specialist downhill and enduro development program, with qualified and experienced coaches from Thredbo and Jindy Riders.
