Principal’s Note

From the Principal

A Year of Achievement and Growth As 2025 draws to a close, it is timely to reflect on a year of significant achievement and growth across our Snowy Mountains Grammar School learning community.

Connections between current students, alumni and staff continue to enrich school life and reflect the lasting impact of an SMGS education well beyond graduation.

Throughout the year, students have engaged positively with academic learning, wellbeing initiatives and opportunities beyond the classroom. Calm, purposeful classrooms, strong pastoral care and a broad co-curricular program have supported students to grow in confidence, capability and independence.

I extend my sincere thanks to our staff for their professionalism and care, and to our families for the strong partnership between home and school that supports every student. I also thank our Parents and Friends Association for their commitment throughout the year, particularly their efforts with the raffle, which has provided valuable support for student programs.

2025 has also been marked by several major milestones.

Our students achieved four national championship titles in mountain biking, snowsports and virtual debating, reflecting commitment, teamwork and excellence at the highest level. For the first time, an SMGS student was selected for the prestigious SHAPE showcase, recognising outstanding achievement in creative and design learning. These accomplishments sit alongside the many quieter successes that occur every day in classrooms, studios, workshops and outdoor environments.

It has also been another exceptional year for our Year 12 cohort, who achieved the highest number of Band 6 results in the School’s history and improved the School’s state ranking by 25 places to 153rd. Further detail on these outstanding HSC results can be found in the following pages of this edition.

As we celebrate the School’s 30th year, we have also been reminded of the enduring strength of our community.

Staff Changes There will be a number of staff changes for 2026, with the following 2025 staff members concluding their time with us: Mr Stephen Henderson (Technology/Mathematics) is undertaking a PhD full time next year in the area of Artificial Intelligence, and will continue to present at conferences on this topic in particular. We thank Stephen for his very positive attitude and willingness to lead many things, including Robotics.

We wish him well next year, particularly in his studies.

Mr Jock Rogers (Science) has decided to move on next year and spend time closer to family, located interstate. Jock has been with us for three years and has had a very positive impact on our learning and school culture. His beaming smile, positive attitude and professionalism will be sorely missed and we wish him all the very best.

Principal’s Note

Mrs Melissa Kenney (Head of Boarding) has decided that this year will be her final year at SMGS so as to spend more time closer to her family, who are located out of this area, and she will be taking up another opportunity to allow that to occur.

Mel has done a terrific job leading our boarding community and this year led the opening of a whole new boarding house with great care and commitment. We certainly wish Mel well next year.

Mr Jack Murphy (PDHPE, Mathematics, Head of Year 9) has had a late opportunity offered to him to be promoted to a Head of Department (PDHPE) in another school for the start of next year. Originally part of our boarding team, then gaining teaching qualifications, Mr Murphy has grown in his career at SMGS and we wish him and his new young family all the best.

Mrs Cath Batson (Drama, Head of Performing Arts)—after more than 17 years at SMGS, Cath has decided now is the time for a career shift, moving to become a librarian in the local area, after recently gaining new qualifications. Having dedicated countless hours to the School as our Drama teacher and leading Performing Arts for some time, we are indebted to all Mrs Batson has done for our school over many years. Thank you, Cath, for your boundless energy and creativity.

Mrs Chris Ryrie (Librarian)—having been at SMGS for around 24 years, Mrs Ryrie has provided many students with the inspiration to read more and ignite their imaginations. She has also worked closely with our English Faculty and fulfilled an important role in Educational Support, assisting many students over the years. We will miss Chris and her thoughtful and kind presence as our Librarian.

Mrs Daisy Oayda (Uniform Shop Co-ordinator) has decided to move on from the Uniform Shop Co-ordinator role. Daisy’s professionalism, delightful positivity and collegiality in running our Uniform Shop will be greatly missed. We wish Daisy all the best.

Farewell, Mrs Cath Batson

As Boarding Supervisors, Mr David Cooper and Mrs Andrea Cooper have decided to move on from SMGS next year after two years in the Boarding House as supervisors. We appreciate all that each of them has brought to boarding respectively and for the care they have shown to our boarders. We wish them all the very best in their new challenges in 2026 and beyond.

Mr Ian Hooley (Aviation Tutor) departs this year, having come on board to assist students in the Aviation Program as a tutor in their theoretical studies. Ian came out of retirement as an engineering lecturer at university level to take up the role, and he drives from close to Canberra each teaching day. We appreciated his dedication and helpful approach and wish him well.

For 2026, we will welcome a number of new staff members taking up positions from January. These include: Miss Emma Darling (Head of Performing Arts); Ms Darcy Elliston (Science); Mrs Susan Horvath (Mathematics); and others to be announced upon our return next year. We will introduce each new member of staff prior to the commencement of Term 1 2026, and provide further background.

As we look ahead to 2026, we do so with confidence in the strength of our community and optimism for the opportunities that lie ahead. I wish all members of our community a safe, restful and enjoyable Christmas break.

His message also reinforced the vital role of partnership between students, staff, families and the wider community in shaping meaningful educational experiences.

Our Principal, Dr Andrew Bell, offered a thoughtful reflection on the year that has been. He acknowledged the dedication of staff, the ongoing support of families and, most importantly, the effort and perseverance of our students. Dr Bell highlighted the importance of curiosity, courage and character, reminding students that academic success is only one part of a holistic education that prepares them for life beyond the classroom.

The presentation of awards recognised excellence across the school, celebrating students who have demonstrated academic rigour, leadership, perseverance and a strong commitment to learning. Equally important was the recognition of students whose actions have enriched our school community—those who have shown integrity, service and kindness throughout the year. These students exemplify the values we seek to instil and the positive culture we strive to nurture.

Speech Day celebrations were a fitting conclusion to a successful year, marked by learning, connection and shared achievement.

Congratulations to all students for their hard work, dedication and contributions to making our school a vibrant and supportive community.

The 2025 School Captains’ Farewell Leading with Heart

Good afternoon, Mr Jones, Board Members, Dr Bell, members of the Executive, staff, family, the outgoing Class of 2025 and students.

It felt strange writing this This year reminded and coming back up on us of what makes to the stage, not just as SMGS special. It’s students finishing school, not just the programs but as the outgoing School Captains. Last year, when we were stepping into Year 12 and this role, people told us that this year would go fast, and a lot of us didn’t quite believe them. But it did. It was fast, fun and sometimes prolonged, especially for the Year 12s who had exams in Week 4 of the HSC, when some students had finished on the fifth day. Yet now, standing here, we feel we have accomplished something. Not because everything was perfect, but because we grew through it, as leaders, as students and as a community.

This year reminded us of what makes SMGS special. It’s not just the programs or the mountains or the snow days, although the times when it snows here definitely boost the school spirit.

It’s the people: the staff who support us, the students who bring energy to the community every day, and the shared experiences that make every year at SMGS feel unique.

Some of my most memorable moments, from this year and the past, came from when the community comes together, like Cre8ive Sessions and sing-along nights. There aren’t many schools where you can put on a silly, or very stylish, costume, grab a microphone and belt out some songs with the entire school cheering you on, regardless of whether you are talented or just love having some fun. These nights show what sets this school apart—expression, connection and a sense of belonging. Another defining part of this community is the setting, the mountains and being outdoors. Through camps, challenges and the Duke of Edinburgh journeys, we learn how to problem-solve, push ourselves and work together, even when things don’t go as planned. Some standouts for me were the Ten Peaks hike a little while ago, where it didn’t stop pouring with rain, so we had a big sleep-over at school, and the Great North Walk, where we spent one afternoon looking for a campsite called ‘The Jungo’, which felt more like a myth than an actual destination. We just ended up sleeping on the walking track. But through all of this, as always, we made it work. Those trips taught us lessons that don’t neatly fit into a classroom: resilience, independence and trust.

Aviation was another privilege—learning to fly planes while still at school is something few students in Australia experience. There is just something surreal about landing a plane in the morning and being in maths by lunchtime. It gave us opportunities to follow our passions, push our limits and have views of the Snowy Mountains you don’t get from standing on the ground. One of the experiences that pushed me the most during my time at SMGS was finding the grit and

determination to continue practising for my first solo flight, when I couldn’t get my landings right. While I understand that it is quite important to be able to land the plane, I found it very frustrating to be consistently told that I couldn’t progress.

That frustration made it feel like even more of an achievement when I did finally do my first solo flight, then progress to get my Recreational Pilot Certificate.

And of course there are the extracurricular opportunities.

Equestrian, mountain biking sailing and, in the winter, skiing each week, building skills, absolutely sending it on the slopes and having fun. It’s being part of something deeply connected to the identity of this school and the area. Through all these experiences, we learned the true meaning behind the values of SMGS: courage, authenticity, respect and empathy. But none of this would be possible without the people who support us.

To the teachers and staff, thank you for guiding us, challenging us and believing in us. You guys always make us feel like we belong, and the personal connections that are built here will last timelessly. Your dedication to creating a supportive environment makes this school like a second home to all. To the families, thank you for the early mornings, the late pickups, the encouragement and the patience. You are there with us all the way and are our biggest supporters. To the students, thank you for giving us the privilege of leading you over the past 12 months.

As the outgoing captains, one of the biggest lessons we have learned is that leadership isn’t about being the loudest or most confident; it’s about lifting others, listening, getting involved and creating a space for people to grow, and that is what makes this community so close. It’s something we hope will be carried through long after this year.

To the Year 12s graduating, we wish you the courage to take on what comes next and the confidence to trust the skills you have built here. This past year, and whole schooling journey,

has been a wild one for all of us, so we thank you for being there for each other every step of the way. To the younger students, take every opportunity. Join things. Try things. Be brave. These years go quickly, more quickly than you expect, and the moments you’ll remember are the ones that push you. And to next year’s student leaders, lead with integrity, with empathy, with humour and a willingness to try something different.

Before we finish, I wanted to share something that has stuck with me through the past two years, but especially this year.

Over the past two years, I have been in and out of hospital, but when I was in hospital, I met a kid named Beau, who shared a ward with me. He was younger than me, and going through far more than most people would ever see, but every time I spoke to him, mainly through text, no matter what day it was, he always left me with the same two words: ‘Stay strong’.

Simple. Honest. No big speech. No dramatic message. Just a reminder that strength isn’t about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about holding on, supporting each other, and pushing forward even when things get tough. And when I reflect on my journey, I think about how that message reflects part of this school more than anything else. We stay strong as a community. We stay strong when we try new things. We stay strong for our friends. And we stay strong because this place teaches us how to. So as we hand over the leadership and move into this next chapter of life, that’s what I want to leave with you. Stay strong. In the hard moments. In the exciting moments. In the moments when you are not sure what comes next. It’s simple, but it’s kind of simple that sticks.

Thank you for giving us the privilege of being the 2025 School Captains. Thank you to the teachers, the staff, the families and to every student that shaped this year. It has truly been a privilege.

Spotlight

William Broe, 2025 Dux of the School Reflections on Learning and Leadership William Broe’s academic results in the 2025 HSC reflect both individual excellence and the strength of the wider Year 12 cohort. Achieving six Band 6 results in a broad range of subjects, William was named Dux of the School, an SMGS Distinguished Achiever and a recipient of the NESA Distinguished Achievers Merit List.

Alongside his academic success, William served as Academic Co-Captain in 2025, where his leadership was grounded in practical support, consistency and a strong sense of shared responsibility. He was also a member of the Senior Debate Team that claimed the National Australian Virtual Debating Championship, highlighting his ability to think critically, communicate clearly and apply learning across disciplines.

William also represented Snowy Mountains Grammar School at the NSW Legislative Council Regional Roadshow and Youth Forum, joining students from across Southern NSW for discussions on university and trade pathways, the housing crisis and the impact of artificial intelligence and social media. Together, these experiences reflect a student who approaches learning with curiosity, balance and a strong sense of community, helping to set the tone for an exceptional year for the entire Year 12 cohort.

In the reflections that follow, William shares insights into his approach to learning, leadership and collaboration during his senior years at Snowy Mountains Grammar School.

On Academic Breadth You achieved Band 6 results in a wide range of subjects, from Chemistry and Mathematics to English, Legal Studies and Modern History. How did studying such diverse disciplines shape the way you think and approach learning?

Diversity in one’s thinking is a key facet, in my view, when it comes to academic success. Interdisciplinary study allows for the use of key skills from some subjects to be utilised in others.

For instance, chemistry is obviously chiefly a STEM subject, but the HSC and science in general use key humanities skills to express understanding. As a result, it is important to draw on skills from more written subjects. Doing well in the HSC is also reliant on the ability to keep yourself engaged. For me, this was switching periodically between different subjects and disciplines in order to keep my brain on.

On Consistency and Habits Looking back on your HSC year, what study habits or routines made the biggest difference in helping you perform consistently across multiple subjects?

Two things stand out in my HSC year—firstly, the simple routine of just being physically present at school. It’s as simple as that. I wouldn’t go home until I was completely finished with what I had to do. It is also important to build a routine into your time at school and for me this was sitting in the same seat every day and doing my trademarked ‘chem hour’

every day from 5pm to 6pm. The other key thing for me was teaching content back to others as much as possible—whether that be to someone who didn’t get it or myself in a voice note.

This helps to solidify the content in your memory and also helps to find parts of the syllabus you may be weak on.

On Leadership as Academic Co Captain As Academic Captain, how did you help foster a positive academic culture within the cohort, and what did leadership look like for you in practice rather than in title?

The Academic Captaincy for me looked like being available to Year 12, that’s it. It doesn’t take a genius to see that the HSC is a marathon, and the role of the prefects as a whole is just to act like the people who hand out water. In our case, this year that was just me cleaning the Year 12 kitchen, organising for everyone to bring in food and giving out notes for Modern and Legal. People who are given these kinds of roles often get in their own heads about what they can do and end up doing very little. I took this role with a view to address what Year 12 needs to do their best and that means chocolate in the kitchen and help with the printer.

On Debating and Transferable Skills Being part of the Senior Debate Team that won the National Australian Virtual Debating Championship is a remarkable achievement. How did debating complement your academic studies, particularly in subjects like English, Legal Studies and History?

Debating very simply requires you to have a working knowledge of the status quo, including things like industrial relations, international relations and legislative reform. In this sense there is a very clear impact on a subject like Legal Studies or Modern History and the ability to perform in examinations where you have to improvise responses. It also requires an ability to concisely communicate information, handle pressure and co-operate with people who may have little knowledge of an area.

For instance, we got a topic on the rights of emergency workers to strike. This topic required that I drew on my knowledge of labour rights from Legal, and teach my team about the history of the ALP and union membership in Australia. The time pressure and complexity of the topic reinforced these key ideas for my Legal exam, where I answered a question on how legal measures protect human rights with a discussion of labour rights and the right to join a union.

On Reflection and Advice If you could give one piece of advice to future SMGS students aiming to balance academic excellence, leadership and co curricular commitments, what would it be?

You will fail at some points. This year I got some poor marks and at times felt insane. It is important to be flexible and use routine to insure your processes. Take time for yourself. This year I watched 15 seasons of ER, all of The West Wing and at least six other shows in their totality. I also did my final debate the day before my Legal exam and became a top 0.01 per cent Beyoncé listener.

Community is the key to individual success. For me, that looked like my friends who sat across from me at my spot, my many incredible teachers, and my family. You need to lean on others. This also means you have to be willing to be leant on. At points this year, I have spent hours trying to explain Le Chatelier’s principle and have taught people about CAFS, a subject I do not even study. My success is the result of the whole cohort’s success. That is a simple fact of the HSC. You are all in it together.

From the Head of Junior School What Harry, Simba and Paddington Teach Us At the end of another wonderful year, I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks to our families and the entire Junior School community. Your support, encouragement and partnership have been invaluable in creating a nurturing and inspiring environment for our students.

This year has been a true testament to the strength of our community. The effort, camaraderie and collaboration shown by our dedicated staff have ensured that every child has had opportunities to learn, grow and thrive. I am deeply proud of the way our team has worked together to provide exceptional care and education.

We farewell Mrs Rosheen Nikora, after six years of service. Mrs Nikora has been pivotal in the development of our early learners and has contributed significantly to the growth of our Junior School community. We wish her all the best in her new role as Director, Gidgillys Early Education and Care Centre.

I would like to pass on to our students a few thoughts about courage, leadership and the power of kindness, through the eyes of characters they know and love.

First, courage.

Think of Harry Potter standing in front of Voldemort—not because he was the strongest, but because he believed in doing what was right. Dumbledore once said, ‘It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends’.

Courage isn’t about being fearless, it’s about choosing to do the right thing, even when it’s hard.

Next, leadership.

Leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about lifting others up. Think of Simba from The Lion King. He didn’t start as a king, he started as a cub who made mistakes. But he learned that true leadership means taking responsibility and caring for your community.

As Rafiki reminded him, ‘The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it’.

Let’s help others shine.

And finally, kindness.

One of my favourite examples is Paddington Bear. Paddington teaches us that a small act of kindness can change someone’s whole day. He says, ‘If we are kind and polite, the world will be right’.

Kindness is powerful. It makes our school a place where everyone feels safe and valued.

As we finish 2025, I want you to remember this: Be brave like Harry.

Be a leader like Simba.

Be kind like Paddington.

If you do these three things, you will make a difference—not just here at school, but everywhere you go.

From the Head of Boarding Reaching New Heights at Treetops Adventure!

Our 2025 Boarders’ Day was nothing short of spectacular, with students spending the day climbing, swinging and soaring through the forest at Treetops Adventure Canberra. Located in stunning Majura Pines, the park offered the perfect mix of challenge, fun and fresh mountain air—an unbeatable setting for an unforgettable boarding experience.

From the moment we arrived, the energy was high. Boarders strapped into their harnesses and set off on a series of highropes courses that stretched up to 15 metres above the ground.

Each level presented new challenges and new opportunities for students to cheer each other on. Whether they were leaping between platforms, navigating wobbly bridges or conquering the zip lines, the encouragement and laughter echoing through the pines showed what boarding spirit is all about.

But Boarders’ Day wasn’t just about adventure, it was about growth. The courses pushed students to step outside their comfort zones, building confidence with every obstacle they overcame.

More importantly, they learned the power of communication, trust and teamwork, supporting their peers and celebrating achievements big and small.

With courses designed for all abilities, everyone could participate at a pace that suited them, making the day inclusive, empowering and rewarding. It was the perfect opportunity for boarders to unwind, connect and enjoy a shared outdoor challenge.

The experience encouraged teamwork and genuine peer support as students helped one another across each section of the course.

It also strengthened confidence and personal growth as they realised they could conquer more than they first imagined. The environment provided a safe and fully supervised challenge that allowed students to test their limits within a supportive framework.

Above all, the day fostered a strong sense of community spirit and created shared memories that will stay with them long after they returned to the boarding house.

Our 2025 Boarders’ Day was a reminder of how adventure brings people together. We can’t wait for the next one!

Our Sports Awards Presentation evening was a highlight of the end of the 2025 school year, celebrating the determination, sportsmanship and achievements of our athletes across foundation sports, carnivals, representative pathways and summer sports.

The evening recognised students from Year 3 to Year 12 who demonstrated commitment, growth and passion for sport, as well as those who embodied teamwork, leadership and school spirit throughout the year.

Arts and Design Award Evening 2025 A Celebration of Creativity

In Week 5 of Term 4, Snowy Mountains Grammar School once again shone a spotlight on the vibrant creativity of our students at the annual Arts and Design Award Evening. This year’s event was made even more special through its partnership with the Curiosity Centre Art Prize, creating an inspiring start to the night. Guests mingled among an impressive exhibition of works, enjoying refreshments, while taking in the exceptional talent of all entrants.

Instead, he encouraged students to focus on building a meaningful body of work that reflects their imagination, their perspective and their curiosity. His message was heartfelt, hopeful and empowering.

As the evening progressed, everyone moved upstairs to continue the celebration, where award presentations recognised outstanding achievements in Visual Arts, Design and Technology, Music and Drama for students in Years 7–12. The atmosphere was warm, inviting and creative, thanks to the relaxed cabaretstyle seating, complete with glowing table lamps, lollies and elegant floral arrangements—an environment truly fitting for our community of young artists, performers and designers.

Students were clearly inspired by Harrison’s address, with many choosing to stay after the formalities to introduce themselves, ask questions and continue the conversation. Their eagerness spoke volumes about the impact of his words and the value of authentic role models in creative fields.

The Curiosity Centre Art Prize A Showcase of Student Expression

The second annual Curiosity Centre Art Prize brought together creativity from across our learning community, showcasing artworks that reflected imagination, technical skill and personal expression. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this year’s exhibition continued to grow in both scale and quality as we celebrated outstanding pieces across Junior, Middle and Senior School, as well as our Open Category.

Junior School, K to 3 (2D) The winning artwork was selected for its bold use of colour and confident brush strokes, reminiscent of Arthur Boyd’s expressive style. Its warm palette and imaginative design beautifully captured the face of a unicorn.

Congratulations to Gracie, Kindergarten Junior School, Years 4 to 6 (2D) This close-up photograph of an echidna impressed with its technical proficiency and strong composition. Fine detail in the face and spikes created a striking portrait of one of our beloved native animals.

Congratulations to Indigo, Year 6 Middle School, Years 7 to 9 (2D) The winning piece stood out through its bold, expressive style and use of bright primary colours. The contrast between red earth and blue sky, combined with detailed gestural brush strokes, created a lively artwork that would sit proudly in any gallery.

Design Innovation Recognised SMGS Marks First-Ever ‘Shape’ Selection

Snowy Mountains Grammar School is proud to announce that Year 12 student Aiden Moore has been selected to exhibit his HSC major project in the prestigious Shape exhibition, which recognises the most outstanding Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design projects from across NSW. Aiden’s selection marks a historic first for SMGS, with no previous student reaching this level of achievement.

Aiden’s project, ‘Rail Rover: Heritage Rail Track Inspection Vehicle’, was inspired by his volunteer work with the Cooma Monaro Railway.

Designed to scan track beds, identify faults and digitally record maintenance data, the Rail Rover It’s an amazing streamlines a traditionally labourfeeling that I’ve intensive process. This project is something that I’ve been very passionate about, as it has the potential to help heritage rail organisations and groups with recording, documenting and storing information about track conditions and locating specific areas needing maintenance. I’m absolutely ecstatic to have my Rail Rover going on display at Shape and I’m excited to see it there. I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved and I’m excited to see where I can take this project in the future’.

Head of Faculty—Art and Design, Mr Scott Frize, also commended Aiden on his success, saying, ‘It is an incredible achievement for Aiden to be selected to exhibit his work among a select few in the state as part of Shape. To have worked with young designers such as Aiden and his 2025 cohort, as they grappled with solving problems they identified to improve our lives, was both exciting and a privilege’.

This achievement also reflects the growing strength of the Art and Design faculty. This year, six SMGS students were nominated for Shape, with their work showcased in the Year 12 2025 Major Works Showcase Catalogue. Aiden’s selection from this talented group highlights the exceptional standard of creativity, innovation and design thinking emerging from the faculty, which continues to go from strength to strength.

Aiden’s success is a proud moment for the entire SMGS learning community and a powerful endorsement of the high-quality teaching, mentorship and opportunities available to our young designers.

The School is celebrating its strongest HSC results to date, reflecting a strong culture of academia, sustained academic improvement and a long-term commitment to high expectations, where students are supported to achieve their personal best and fulfil their potential.

‘We are particularly proud of the breadth of these results’, Mr Horvath said.

‘They show that academic excellence can be achieved across science, humanities and creative pathways when students are given the right support and opportunities.’

Innovation and Creative Excellence Recognised at Statewide Level In 2025, two-thirds of the Design and Technology class was nominated for consideration for the prestigious SHAPE Showcase, which recognises outstanding HSC major works in creative and design learning across NSW. One student was later selected to exhibit their work at a state level.

‘These accomplishments sit alongside the many quieter successes that occur every day in classrooms, studios, workshops and outdoor learning environments’, Mr Horvath said.

‘Not every success makes headlines, but together they reflect a deeply embedded culture of learning.’

Future Pathways and Post-School Outcomes Strong academic outcomes at Snowy Mountains Grammar School are matched by a clear focus on future pathways, with graduates supported to pursue a wide range of post-school options aligned to their strengths, interests and aspirations.

In 2025, 81 per cent of students applied for university, with many receiving early-entry offers across a broad range of courses. In addition, four per cent of students are applying for TAFE, four per cent are pursuing apprenticeships, and 11 per cent have chosen alternative pathways, reflecting the School’s commitment to valuing diverse definitions of success.

Year 10 Work Experience Exploring Future Pathways

Our Year 10 students stepped beyond the classroom as they took part in the Work Experience Program. The week offered a valuable opportunity to explore a variety of career pathways, meet new people and gain industry-specific skills. Students also strengthened key employability skills such as communication, teamwork, punctuality and professionalism, helping them build confidence and a clearer understanding of what is expected in the workplace.

Celebrating Year 10

Growth, Community and New Beginnings

As I stood at the podium during the Year 10 Dinner at Tinkersfield on 14 November, I was struck by how far this wonderful cohort has come. Each year, the dinner marks an important milestone, but this year felt particularly special. It was a moment not only to acknowledge their achievements, but to celebrate the young people they are becoming— capable, compassionate and ready for the challenges of Senior School.

In my speech, I shared how much joy it has brought me to watch these students grow from energetic, occasionally mischievous Year 7s, into thoughtful and resilient young adults. Their humour, creativity and teamwork have been constants throughout their journey. Whether in the classroom, on school camps, or simply in the everyday moments where they support one another, they have shown what it means to be part of our SMGS community.

This sentiment inspired the piece we created together for the 30-Year Anniversary Time Capsule, embroidered with the words: ‘Mrs Mower believes … we are able’. I chose these words because I genuinely do believe in each one of them—in their abilities, their potential and the courage they will carry into their senior years. As I said on the night, every one of them is ‘able … capable, creative and ready to take on the future with courage and belief’ in themselves.

As the evening continued, the students delivered heartfelt speeches filled with gratitude—for their friends, their teachers,

their families and for the time they’ve shared here at SMGS. They spoke honestly about the highs and lows, the laughter and the challenges, and the memories that will stay with them long after they leave Year 10. Hearing their words reminded me once again of how deeply connected this cohort is and how thoughtfully they appreciate the experiences that have shaped them.

As they move into Years 11 and 12, I encouraged them to remember that success is rarely about having an easy path; it is built through determination, kindness and learning from the moments that test us. I reminded them of the Paul Kelly lyric I often return to: ‘From little things, big things grow’. It is a message that feels especially true for this year group. Every effort they make now, every challenge they face with heart, contributes to the future they are shaping.

I am incredibly proud of the Year 10 Class of 2025. Whether they continue their journey with us or move into new communities, I know they will take with them the courage, authenticity, respect and empathy that define our school. It has been a privilege to guide them this far and I am excited to see all they will achieve as they step into their final years of schooling.

Celebrating Year 6

Honouring Seven Years of Growth and Achievement

The Year 6 Graduation Dinner, held on Wednesday, 25 November, at Horizons Resort, was a memorable evening celebrating the completion of seven years of Junior School education at Snowy Mountains Grammar School. Joined by parents and teachers, the 25 graduating students came together to reflect on their journey and achievements.

William O. and Addison R. delivered an entertaining speech on behalf of the Year 6 cohort, delighting the audience with funny stories and treasured memories from their time in Junior School. A strong sense of belonging was evident throughout the evening—regardless of when students joined SMGS, it was clear that this cohort had grown into one united team.

A special moment of the evening was the cutting of the graduation cake by four students who have been part of the SMGS community since Kindergarten: Henry L., Miranda B., William O. and Jamie P. The night concluded with a heartfelt video montage capturing each student’s growth from Kindy to Year 6, providing a fitting and emotional end to a wonderful celebration.

Duke of Edingburgh’s Award

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Murramarang Adventurous Journey 2025 Following the completion of the End of Semester examinations, our Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award students embarked upon the spectacular Murramarang South Coast Walk (MSCW) for the final adventurous journey of 2025.

The 34-kilometre, Grade 4 trail, running from Merry Beach in the north to Maloneys Beach in the south, is one of the most scenic multi-day hiking trails in New South Wales. With its stunning coastal views, pristine beaches and rugged terrain, the MSCW provided the perfect setting for our Bronze Award Duke of Edinburgh students to develop their navigation and campcraft skills, test their resilience and work collaboratively with their peers to negotiate the challenges presented by the wild weather, ticks and king tides.

Camping under the stars, carrying four days of provisions in a hiking pack, navigating diverse landscapes and overcoming physical challenges, the students displayed courage, determination and camaraderie. This journey was not just about reaching the finish line but about personal growth, teamwork and creating lasting memories. The experience embodied the core values of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, showcasing students’ ability to adapt, collaborate and thrive in a challenging environment. Sincere thanks to Mr Booth, Mr Frize, Mrs Mower, Mr Wharton and Mrs Bell for accompanying our students on these invaluable adventures into the wilderness.

Cultivating Skills and Connections A Wrap on Agriculture for 2025 Agriculture continues to thrive at Snowy Mountains Grammar School through hands-on learning, industry engagement and meaningful opportunities for students to connect with the world of food and fibre production. Our program has been rich with activity this term, from raising poultry for national competition to celebrating National Agriculture Day and recognising outstanding student achievement.

National Agriculture Day: A Whole-School Celebration In November, we proudly celebrated National Agriculture Day, a highlight of Term 4 and a wonderful opportunity for our learning community to connect with Australia’s food and fibre story. The day was filled with gumboots, gratitude and hands-on learning, as staff and students explored the animals, products and practices that shape our agricultural landscape.

Preparing for the Sydney Royal Easter Show This term, our Agriculture students welcomed six, six-weekold Hy-Line layer chicks generously donated for the Sydney Royal Easter Show poultry competition. Students are taking responsibility for raising and caring for the birds while preparing for judging early next year.

We extend a sincere thank you to: The Blyth family for sharing their ponies The Rowson family for bringing lamb and goat kids The Musacchio family for their silkie chickens Woolworths for supplying fruit and water.

At the show, students will participate not only in the poultry exhibition but also in junior judging in poultry, eggs and beef cattle. These experiences build confidence, agricultural literacy and industry-ready skills, providing an invaluable introduction to Australia’s largest agricultural showcase. Students will be exposed to a range of career pathways and will be able to build networks with like-minded peers.

We are also grateful to our Agriculture students for assisting in co-ordinating an engaging lunchtime program that brought the school together in celebration.

Congratulations to Mr Scott Frize, winner of the inaugural Golden Gumboot, with an impressive 28.7 metre throw.

The day also supported our Royal Flying Doctor Service fundraising BBQ, with more than $500 raised, thanks to the generosity of our community. The funds will support vital healthcare services across remote and rural Australia.

Recognising Excellence: Agriculture Awards We proudly acknowledged two students this term who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the study and practice of agriculture: Stage 5 Agriculture—Aspiring Agriculturalist (Young Achiever Award) Recipient: Finn B. Finn was recognised for his enthusiasm, practical capability and genuine commitment to agriculture. His award included a handcrafted leather belt made by John Saunders of Lone Oak and generously donated by John and Katie Potocki.

Stage 6 Agriculture—Progressive Agriculturalist Award Recipient: Ollia S. Ollia received this award for her maturity, passion and clear direction in pursuing a future in the agricultural industry. She will spend next year gaining hands-on experience on a regional cattle station before commencing an agriculture-focused university degree. Ollia’s determination reflects the qualities of a future leader in Australian agriculture.

Growing the Next Generation of Agricultural Thinkers

From caring for competition poultry to engaging in community events and deepening practical knowledge and skills, Agriculture at SMGS continues to provide students with authentic, industryconnected learning experiences. These opportunities help students grow as thinkers, collaborators and emerging leaders in the agricultural sector.

Building Christmas Joy

Highlights from the Gingerbread House Competition

The school library was bursting with creativity and Christmas spirit in Term 4 as students took part in the cardboard Gingerbread House Competition. Armed with scissors, glue and plenty of imagination, students across all stages built and decorated their very own ‘gingerbread’ masterpieces entirely from cardboard and non-edible materials.

Entries came in all shapes and sizes, each no bigger than an A4 base, but overflowing with festive charm. From sparkling tinsel doorframes to colourful sticker windows, every house showed the time, care and creativity of its maker.

A huge thank you goes to our Year 12 Design & Technology students, Blake and Chase, who took on the tough task of judging. They used detailed marking criteria to ensure fairness across all stages and commented on how impressed they were by the quality and imagination on display.

STEM Learning Grows Snowy Hydro Community Grant

This year, Snowy Mountains Grammar School’s Junior School received a $10,000 grant from the Snowy Hydro Community Grants Program. With this support, we purchased 24 LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential kits for Years 1, 2 and 3, which have given our youngest learners an exciting and hands-on introduction to STEM. These kits have already transformed classrooms into spaces filled with creativity, coding and collaboration. Year 1 students have built a Mars rover, a Ferris wheel, a treehouse camp and a boat. One of their favourite projects was a theme park entry gate, which they cleverly redesigned as a Thredbo ski lift gate.

They coded the system so that skiers with the correct coloured pass could enter, while others were stopped. It was a brilliant blend of problem-solving and imagination.

STEM in Action

Learning from a World-Leading Terrain Park Designer This term, our Stage 2 students experienced a remarkable and memorable highlight in their STEM learning journey when they had the opportunity to work with world-renowned terrain park designer, Charles Beckinsale. Charles, of Stomping Grounds, and a proud local, is widely regarded as one of the most skilled and sought-after terrain park builders in the global snowsports industry. Known for his creativity, precision and relentless selfdriven pursuit of excellence, he continues to bring his expertise home to Thredbo, where he loves nothing more than designing and riding on his own mountain with his family.

Charles’s visit marked the culmination of our Year 3 STEM Tech Deck parks project, a hands-on and highly engaging task that has captured the imagination of students and families alike. Over several weeks, students explored the principles that underpin real-world terrain park design, drawing on their classroom learning in Mathematics and Science. They investigated force, gravity and friction; examined how 3D shapes create varied riding experiences; and developed an early understanding of engineering concepts such as stability, angle, trajectory and friction. Using this knowledge, students worked in small teams to design, plan and construct their own miniature Tech Deck terrain parks.

A standout element of the project was the involvement of Year 3 parents, who generously volunteered their time over two dedicated afternoon sessions. Parents arrived equipped with skills, tools, creativity and enthusiasm. Together with the students, they measured, cut, problem-solved and experimented, transforming raw materials into detailed and imaginative model parks. These sessions offered a powerful example of community partnership in action—parents and children collaborating, laughing, learning and building together. Their contributions not only enriched the quality

of the students’ designs but also strengthened the sense of connection across our school community.

With the foundations laid, students were ready for the extraordinary learning experience that came next: an afternoon with Charles Beckinsale himself. Charles shared professional sketches, technical drawings, behind-the-scenes videos and photographs from some of his most iconic projects. He explained the mathematical thinking that informs every design decision and discussed the forces that act on each feature.

Students were captivated by his explanations and inspired by his knowledge of terrain-park building.

As impressive as his expertise was Charles’s generosity. He spent time carefully examining each student-built Tech Deck park, talking quietly to students about their ideas. His warm, down-to-earth approach created a learning environment where students felt confident to ask questions, share ideas and think boldly about their designs.

We extend our sincere thanks to Charles for giving so generously of his time, energy and expertise. His visit not only deepened the students’ STEM understanding but also offered them a powerful role model—someone who turned passion, hard work and creativity into an extraordinary career, while staying grounded in his connection to home.

The project stands as a celebration of STEM learning, community involvement and the inspiration that comes from connecting students with real-world experts.

Science Comes to Life Year 9 Visit Yarrangobilly Caves Our Year 9 students enjoyed an unforgettable excursion to Yarrangobilly Caves, where they explored the spectacular North and South Glory cave systems and uncovered the science behind their formation. Guided by National Parks staff, students learned how erosion, mineral deposition and chemical change shape limestone caves over thousands of years.

The experience provided a powerful real-world connection to the Stage 5 Science syllabus, deepening students’ understanding of Earth’s processes and the unique geological history of the Snowy Mountains region.

Growing Compassionate Leaders Impact: Service Learning in Action at SMGS

At Snowy Mountains Grammar School, service learning is an essential part of how we help students grow as compassionate, responsible and active citizens. It connects classroom learning with purposeful action and empowers students to make a positive difference in their community and beyond.

Nurturing people and the planet is central to our school ethos. Through service learning, students develop empathy, leadership and a deep sense of responsibility, while contributing to meaningful change locally, nationally and globally.

Term 4 Impact Highlights This Term 4, our community came together through several meaningful service-learning projects. These experiences helped students deepen their understanding of empathy, leadership and collective responsibility.

Year 12 CAFS: Supporting Those Experiencing Homelessness During their excursion to Sydney, our Year 12 CAFS students helped serve meals to around 60 people experiencing homelessness through One Meal, Wayside Chapel and Rough Edges café. Their compassion, teamwork and willingness to learn made a real and lasting difference.

We extend our sincere thanks to Woolworths Jindabyne for donating food for the BBQ, and to Friendly Grocer for providing homemade slices. Their generosity helped create a warm and welcoming meal for those who needed it most.

Thank you to those parents and carers who donated nonperishable goods, which filled 10 hampers that One Meal will distribute to the homeless this Christmas, together with toiletries donations that the students delivered to Wayside Chapel to help this organisation provide for the homeless.

Year 7 Christmas Fundraiser for the Salvation Army Year 7 once again led their annual Christmas Fundraiser, supporting the Salvation Army’s vital community programs.

Students took part in a festive raffle and guess-the-lollies competition, and they hosted a $1 bake sale and offered Santa photos in the Drama Room. Students and staff joined in the spirit by wearing Christmas jumpers and accessories, creating joy and raising funds at a special time of year.

Agriculture Students Support the Royal Flying Doctor Service In celebration of National Agriculture Day, our Agriculture students hosted a community BBQ to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). The event acknowledged the essential role of agriculture in regional communities, while supporting an organisation that provides critical healthcare to remote Australians. Their teamwork and initiative helped raise valuable funds, while strengthening awareness of the vital work of the RFDS. Growing Compassionate Leaders Through these service-learning experiences, students across SMGS learn that impact is created through consistent action, kindness and responsibility. They see that service is not just something they do, but something they live. It is the courage to help, the willingness to lead and the belief that even small contributions can create meaningful change.

SMGS Senior Debating Team Named National Champions Snowy Mountains Grammar School’s Senior Virtual Debating Team has achieved an exceptional milestone, securing the National Championship title in the ...the team Australian National Virtual Debating Competition, demonstrated a high after a decisive Grand Final level of academic win against Kinross Wolaroi discipline as they School. In the one-hour preparation period, the team demonstrated a high level of academic discipline as they deconstructed the motion, synthesised key concepts and constructed a coherent and well-evidenced affirmative case.

Adjudicators commended both teams on their analytical depth, well-structured arguments and effective rebuttals.

One adjudicator observed that ‘the intellectual horsepower was evident’, noting in particular the clarity of reasoning and the confident delivery of the third speakers from both schools.

After careful deliberation, the adjudication panel reached a unanimous decision in favour of Snowy Mountains Grammar School.

SMGS congratulates Georgie, Sienna, Will and Emma on this outstanding academic achievement.

The school also acknowledges the significant contribution of Ms Anne Jones for her expertise, guidance and long-standing commitment to the development and strengthening of the SMGS debating program.
