Welcome From the Principal, Dr Andrew Bell
We are thrilled to provide the following information about our Snowsports Program including its Academy Program, to athletes and families who will be participating in the upcoming winter season on the spectacular slopes of Perisher and Thredbo resorts’ snowfields.
As we enter our 10th year of the program, our goal remains to deliver a comprehensive winter training experience that encompasses every aspect of athletic, academic, pastoral and logistical support for Kindergarten to Year 11 students. We understand the importance of balancing athletic success and academic development and we aim to provide our students with the tools and resources they need to excel in both areas, whether they are beginners or future Olympians.
Our dedicated staff and supportive peer relationships are at the heart of the program’s design, allowing students to reach their full potential on and off the slopes. We are constantly expanding our support and experience to mentor students and provide athletes with the best possible opportunities, both on and off the snow.
If you are interested in joining the Snowsports Academy for Years 7-12 students at Snowy Mountains Grammar School, we encourage you to speak to our Director of Sport or Snowsports Academy Coordinator for more detailed information and to continue to read this handbook for key insights into our program.
Whether you are a returning student athlete or joining us for the first time, we are delighted to have you as part of the Snowsports team.
Dr Andrew Bell Principal

Thredbo Resort
Thredbo Ski Racing Club
Thredbo Ski Racing Club (TSRC) offers the following programs:
Under 12 Age Group
This program is designed for young skiers who show strong skiing skills and who wish to develop their alpine ski and racing skills. TSRC follows the Snow Australia pathway and the important philosophy of continually developing fundamental skills at a young age. This is achieved by a large focus on technical free skiing in varied snow and terrain and challenging children in a fun environment of skills and drills. There is a strong priority for these age groups to optimise training versus race days in order to strengthen their skill and enjoyment of the sport as opposed to over-racing.
Under 14 / Under 16 Age Group
This program is a continuation from the younger age groups with fundamental skill development remaining the main focus. To achieve this, there will still be a large proportion of technical free skiing, skills and drills both in and out of the brush and gate environment. The program will follow a structured seasonal progression in order to allow athletes a step-by-step approach.
The program will begin with fundamental skill development and step through to an end-of-season focus on race simulation leading into the Snow Australia National Children’s Championships. The program requires consistent attendance, discipline and focus as well as a high level of fitness.
Training: 28 June to 13 September. Training days are usually Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
* Training start days vary depending on course and discipline. Please check the Thredbo website for your start date.

Individualised Training Programs
The School also supports students in their individual Snowsports aspirations.
Once coaches are assigned to groups, the Snowsports Program staff will reach out to each coach to discuss individualised training programs, athlete needs and support strategies including emergency and injury protocols.
The Snowsports Academy staff and Snowsports coaches will regularly connect to talk about student wellbeing and progress, ensuring that athletes receive the support they need both on and off the snow.
Using our online e-Learning platform, CANVAS, staff develop individual study programs to complement training commitments and provide online support for students’ training, whether it be here for our Winter or overseas during the Northern Winter.
Student Safety
Sun Protection
All Snowsports participants must practice sun-safe procedures. Most importantly, all exposed skin must have sunscreen applied before going on snow. Goggles must be worn at all times when on snow.
First Aid
Injuries can happen whilst ‘on-snow’ and SMGS staff are well-prepared to respond. All staff and coaches are trained to provide first aid and also have support from the Ski Patrol at both resorts to ensure additional safety.
Baseline Concussion Testing
There has been growing concern in sporting communities in Australia and Internationally about the potential health ramifications for athletes from repeated head trauma (RHT) and sport-related concussion. Concussion affects athletes at all levels of sport, from the part time recreational athlete to the full time professional. If managed appropriately, most episodes of concussion resolve over a short period of time, with or without medical intervention. Complications can occur, including prolonged duration of symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury. There is also concern about potential consequences of RHT for long term brain health.
Concussion symptoms and recovery times can differ greatly from person to person and the biggest risk is the compounding effects of receiving another concussion before fully recovering from the first. A baseline concussion test helps medical staff understand what a fully recovered state looks like for each individual, providing a crucial reference point for better care.
A Baseline Concussion Test is compulsory for all Snowsports Program students.
SMGS facilitates a Baseline Concussion Testing through Elevate Physio, a Complete Concussions provider in Jindabyne. Additional costs are involved for student tests.

Safety Notice, Inherent Risk and Acknowledgement for Snowsports at SMGS
Snowsports is a fun, adventurous and challenging sport that should be treated with a high level of common sense and personal responsibility. Speed and control in Snowsports rests with the student. All students need to respect the terrain and travel at a speed that is controlled and within their skill level. Students must:
1. Stay in control and avoid other people and hazards.
2. Use appropriate protective equipment, especially helmets, to minimise the risk of injury.
3. Use each lift safely. If in doubt, ask the lift attendant.
4. Obey all signs and warnings and keep off closed trails and areas.
5. Avoid and give way to people below and beside them.
6. Not stop where they are not visible from above or where they obstruct a trail.
7. Look uphill and give way to others before starting downhill or merging into a trail.
8. Use care to prevent runaway snowboards.
9. Alert and identify themselves to Resort Staff, if they are involved in or see an incident or accident.
10. Be aware that it is dangerous to ski, board or ride lifts if their ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol.
All SMGS students are required to wear the correct safety equipment at all times. Parents/ carers and students should consider their protection needs carefully and seriously consider the purchase of recommended safety/ protective items.
Staff will make every reasonable effort to monitor and enforce the use of safety equipment. It should be noted, however, that students are not under direct adult supervision at all times and therefore there is a high degree of responsibility for wearing the correct safety equipment left in the hands of the student.
Equipment is the personal responsibility of the student and loss or damage is not the responsibility of the School.
Students must also maintain courteous and respectful relationships with students, school staff, resort coaches and parents. Students must abide by the Snowy Mountains Grammar School Student Welfare and Discipline Policy as well as the school’s zero-tolerance Drug and Alcohol Policy in addition to meeting classroom and Boarding House expectations. If students fail to adhere to the Code of Conduct and behavioural expectations of SMGS and the Snowsports Academy, they should expect their placement to be terminated and no refunds will be offered.
Strength and Conditioning Training
Strength and conditioning are crucial components of training and we hope that most athletes come with some prior experience in this area. We recommend utilising:
• SMGS Gymnasium
• Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Thredbo
• Precision Training Centre
• National Snowsports Training Centre (NSTC)
• Snow Australia Elite Talent Pathway
Transport
All transport times for training and competition events will be shared through the Microsoft Teams App, ensuring everyone stays informed. The training schedule provided by the resorts is subject to change and we will keep students updated with any changes as soon as possible.
Any student in the Snowsports Academy may use the transport service to competitions, provided they are registered in events for that day.
It is essential for each student to stay on top of their schedule and event information and to reach out to the Snowsports Academy Coordinator with any questions or concerns.
Competitions and Events

Code of Conduct
1. You must remain under control and proceed in such a manner that you can stop or avoid other people and objects.
2. Do not stop where you are obstructing a ski run or are not visible from above.
3. As you proceed downhill or overtake another person, you must avoid the people below and beside you.
4. When entering a ski run or starting downhill, you must look uphill and ‘Give Way’ to other Skiers and Boarders.
5. All Skiers and Snowboarders must wear safety equipment as detailed in this handbook.
6. If you are involved in or witness a collision or accident, you must remain at the scene and identify yourself to the SkiPatrol/Coach and alert a SMGS staff member that there has been an accident where possible, using the Snowsports Emergency Contact card.
7. Keep off all closed ski runs and closed areas. Observe and obey all signs and warnings.
8. You must not use lifts or terrain if your ability is impaired through the use of drugs or alcohol.
9. You must have completed the chairlift and safety procedures initiation at each course. These will be conducted at the beginning of the season with a qualified instructor. Students will be taught how to load, ride and unload safely. If in doubt, ask the instructor or lift attendant.
10. Chairlift safety bars must be used.
Pastoral Care
The Snowsports Academy places a strong emphasis on pastoral care, primarily managed by the SMGS Snowsports Academy Supervisors. They monitor expectations, workload, stress, fatigue and overall effort throughout the program. Regular check-ins are part of our commitment to student wellbeing and our Snowsports Academy staff are available to assist students at any time during the season.
We work closely with athletes, teaching staff, boarding staff, coaching staff and parents to implement and maintain our pastoral care and wellbeing support throughout the program. It is essential for athletes to manage their own training calendars and stay in touch with the Snowsports Academy team to balance training, studying and resting effectively.
Our SMGS Boarding House also has effective processes for monitoring student wellbeing and safety and ensure open communication between the boarding team, students and parents so that every student can be well and do well.
School and Home Partnership
We encourage open communication between home and the Snowsports Academy. Please keep our staff updated on anything that might assist our Snowsports Academy students. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns throughout the season and to inform your usual school contacts as well.
Academic Care
To offer optimum academic care, Snowsports students are provided with support in formulating study plans and are monitored and assisted over the course of their academic program to ensure they maintain their personal academic standards. Students, teachers, tutors and parents remain in close contact about how students are progressing academically.
Afternoon Academic Support is available four afternoons per week from Monday to Thursday. While these sessions are not compulsory to allow for an individual athlete’s flexibility in study and training, it is strongly recommended athletes attend as many of these as possible to establish a regular and disciplined approach to their academic progression. These sessions provide students with plenty of resources to stay focused and on track.
It is important for students to maintain up-to-date schoolwork and proactively communicate with their class teachers regarding any missed work. Students are required to maintain or improve their personal academic standard. If a student consistently does not meet the required standard, they will be temporarily unable to attend training until they meet the standard.
Day students can also attend both the afternoon 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm and evening 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm tutoring sessions as required.
Academic Program for Snowsports Academy Students
While at school for the day, Snowsports Academy students attend regular timetabled classes with their cohort. Students joining us for Term 3 only are expected to follow the SMGS curriculum. Stage 5 SMGS students will be studying Geography (not History) in Semester 2 and Electives will be chosen as part of the enrolment process. Please ensure you liaise with your usual school and let us know if you have any concerns.
Lockers
Perisher Resort offers a limited number of lockers for hire. If you are interested in securing one, please reach out to Perisher Guest Services. For our Thredbo Snowsports Academy athletes, a locker is included as part of the program at the Thredbo Leisure Centre.
Signing In and Out
Snowsports Academy students (Day and Boarding) are required to follow the SMGS sign in and sign out procedure when departing/ returning to SMGS at all times. This ensures all staff members are aware of a student’s location for safety and attendance reasons.

It is the parents’ or carers’ responsibility to secure insurance cover for their child’s personal Snowsports property. We advise keeping valuable personal property to a minimum. Equipment is the personal responsibility of the student and loss or damage is not the responsibility of the School.
Personal Accident Insurance
We strongly recommend that all members of the Snowsports Program have Private health insurance to benefit from their personal accident insurance. The SMGS Personal Accident for Voluntary Workers Insurance policy offers limited coverage for injuries sustained by volunteers; we suggest that parents/ carers and volunteers obtain their own personal insurance to protect against injuries (including death) year-round.
Personal Health Insurance
Due to the increased risk of serious injury associated with Snowsports activities, we strongly recommend that students have adequate health insurance to cover potential injuries, treatment and rehabilitation.
Refund Policy
In the event that an athlete is unable to complete the program owing to an injury related to the program, which will prevent their re-entering the program before the end of the season, there will be NO refunds made.

Can I choose some parts of the Program but not others?

I’m already enrolled at SMGS; what are my costs?
Additional costs will be athlete safety equipment, Baseline Concussion Testing (compulsory for all Snowsports Academy athletes) and resort Season Pass.
Can I be collected from somewhere other than school for transport to the resorts?
No, due to the tight timetable, all students must assemble at school for transport and arrive by the scheduled time.
Do Snowsports participants require private property insurance?
The School does not carry insurance for students’ personal effects such as skis/ boards and safety equipment. As these items can be expensive, the School recommends that families ensure such items are covered under their own insurance.
How do the Snowsports programs work with the Boarding House?
Residential Snowsports students will participate as far as possible in the normal Boarding House timetable. Residential students will be supplied with packed meals rather than eating in-house where their training timetable dictates.
What support does the School offer for race attendance?
The School offers staff supervision, transport and race support for our students officially attending Snow Australia Interschools and other events supported by the school.
How can I prepare for the season?
Snowsports athletes are strongly encouraged to participate in a tailored and specific snowsports conditioning program prior to the Winter season in order to build and maintain appropriate fitness. This should be organised independently with local providers/ School Gymnasium.
Do I need to compete in Snowsports events?
If you are a member of the Snowsports Academy, it is expected that you represent SMGS at the Snow Australia Interschools event at a minimum. If you are participating in the Wednesday Snowsports Program, Interschools is a great way to gain experience in the racing, even if you are new to the sport.
How do I access teaching support when I am competing at other events?
Athletes can access their work and contact their teachers from any location via our online Learning Management System, Canvas or via email. The Snowsports Academy Coordinator and SMGS staff can provide an actual point of contact for athletes while away at competitions.
How do I get home if I attend the after school academic sessions (Snowsports Academy)?
Non-residential students must arrange their own transport home if they are staying after school to attend academic sessions.
Should I get Baseline Concussion Testing before the season?
Athletes are strongly encouraged to get Concussion Baseline Testing prior to the commencement of the season if you are in the Snowsports Academy. The Snowsports Academy Coordinator will organise sessions for this at the beginning of the season with Elevate Physio using Baseline Testing. There is an extra cost associated with this testing and further information will be available closer to the date.

What was going through your mind when you found out you had placed 2nd at the Youth Olympics?
When the judges’ scores came in and the event commentator announced that I was progressing to the big final, I knew at that stage that I had won a Youth Olympics medal. It was a surreal moment, and I was super excited.
Could you describe the atmosphere and excitement of participating in such a prestigious event?
The atmosphere of the Youth Olympic Games was like nothing I’d ever experienced at a competition. All of the competitors lived in the athletes’ village together, so I got to meet lots of new people from different countries. It was really exciting to then compete against the friends I had made. Being part of such a talented and competitive environment helped push me to compete at my best.
What was the most memorable moment for you during the Youth Olympics?
There were so many incredible moments during the Youth Olympics, but my most memorable moment is when I got to hug my family, coach and Australian team members after I’d won the silver medal.
How did you prepare mentally and physically for the competition? Did you have any pre-competition rituals or routines?
I try to keep my routine on the morning of competitions the same as the routine I follow every day for training. On the morning of the competition in Korea, I started the day by eating a huge breakfast so that I would have heaps of energy out on the mogul course. The days are quite long so it was important to be extra fuelled. After breakfast, I did a warm-up to physically prepare my body and then I geared up to go out and compete. At the top of the course before my duals, I visualised my run to mentally prepare myself.
Can you share any valuable lessons or insights you gained from competing at the Youth Olympics?

Something I learnt throughout my two weeks at the Youth Olympics was to mentally approach my competition run as if it is just another training run. This helped me to keep calm in the start gate and enjoy the moment.
What advice would you give to younger athletes aspiring to reach the same level of competition as you?
My advice to younger athletes is to train hard, use any setbacks as motivation, and most importantly have fun.
Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations in your sporting career?
I see the Youth Olympics as a stepping stone towards my long-term goals of competing on the World Cup circuit and ultimately representing Australia at the Olympic Games.
