Fall brings change, cause for thanks
We are entering what I always think is a special time of year. With Thanksgiving upon us, the holiday season in full swing and the New Year just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to reflect and thank the people who make this organization so successful.
I’m especially grateful for the many volunteers who helped make our events possible throughout the year. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our dedicated Board of Directors — Kurt Schulz, Stephanie McDonald, Traci Leath, Jamie Parker, Richelle Brown, Shaunte “CJ” Pitt, Deborah Jones and Rozeena Noorani. These board members generously volunteer their time and talents to ensure Experience Snellville thrives, and their contributions cannot be appreciated enough. In addition, I want to thank Executive Director Kelly McAloon and Farmers’ Market Manager Charlene Britt for their hard work and leadership in 2025. Our small but mighty staff, working hand-in-hand with our incredible volunteers, continues to make Experience Snellville a success.
This December, we will hold board elections to fill two outgoing positions. I’d like to take a moment to thank our departing board members, Richelle Brown and Shaunte “CJ” Pitt, for their service and dedication. Both have been active, valued members of Experience Snellville, and we’re proud to see them continue their leadership in our community through their roles on the Snellville City Council. It’s inspiring to watch citizens begin as volunteers with our organization and grow into leadership roles that help guide our city forward.
As we move through this holiday season, I encourage everyone to shop and dine locally. Supporting our local businesses and restaurants keeps our community strong and vibrant — your patronage truly makes a difference.
From all of us at Experience Snellville, have a safe and happy holiday season, and best wishes to you and your family for a bright and prosperous New Year.

Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender
Please join me in congratulating CJ Pitt, Richelle Brown and Catherine Hardrick as your new Snellville Council members. They were sworn into office at the City Council meeting on Nov. 10.
It typically takes a good year or two to get comfortable in the role with all there is to learn and understand. Council members Hetherington, Carter and I, along with our city staff, will work hard to be sure they get what they need to become awesome representatives for you.
And as we warmly greet our new members, we sadly say so long to Mayor Pro Tem Tod Warner and Council members Cristy Lenski and Gretchen Schulz.
Tod has served this city well for a very long time in many capacities, many which have gone unrecognized. He has championed and resolved so many issues for so many people over the years. He is always the one to jump in and fix problems like picking up the dumped patio furniture in the neighborhood or buying the straw for the muddy Towne Green before an event.
Snellville Public Works
Keep fall leaves off the ground and out of storm drains
It is that time of year again. With the season changing, the leaves change colors and start to fall. This can increase the yard work that needs to be done to maintain a beautiful yard.
How do you handle and dispose of your yard debris? A lot of people blow their leave into the street and storm drains. What they don’t know is that leaves and landscape trimmings clog the stormwater systems preventing water from flowing at its normal rate and volume. This can cause flooding and property damage.
Please DO NOT blow leaves and yard debris into the street, stormwater drains, or drainage ditches.
Here are some options to dispose of leaves and yard debris:
•Use a mulching mower and add them to your compost pile
•Rake them up and use the city yard bags that can be purchased at Kroger or Publix
•City residents can bring yard debris to the recycling center located at 2531 Marigold Road (bring proof of residency)
He is always talking with our friends at the state legislature about policy issues. He leaves a great void on our council. Cristy’s service began many years ago as a teacher at South Gwinnett High School. It was ten years ago that she was appointed to the Planning Commission and then ran for city council. As a Council Member, she started the Snellville Youth Council, which is still going strong. She has poured a lot into her work on the Council, and she will also be greatly missed.
And what can I say about Gretchen (and Kurt) Schulz. Founder of the Snellville Farmer’s Market and Community Garden, former board member of Experience Snellville, editorial board member of the Snellville Spirit magazine – Gretchen leaves a great legacy to the city in everything she has done.
While they have individually contributed so much, it was the dedication, commitment and drive from them and others on the councils in the past ten years that allowed us to accomplish so much together – improvements to the Towne Green, support for Experience Snellville events, The Grove at Snellville Towne Center, new Gwinnett County library and the T.W. Briscoe Park Community Center now under construction.
This city has accomplished so much under their tenure and I hope you will join me in a heartfelt thank you.
Please do your part in helping maintain the stormwater systems this fall. Remember, only rain should go down the drain.
Please visit Snellville.org for more information.

The Grove at Towne Center
Snellville Entertainment District unveiled
The City of Snellville unveiled new branding for the Snellville Entertainment District (SED). The walkable area surrounding The Grove at Towne Center and in certain areas of Downtown Snellville allows for outdoor consumption of alcoholic beverages purchased from licensed businesses in the district.
The SED was created in 2020 in anticipation of the downtown transformation of The Grove, a $100 million mixed used public-private partnership that includes tenants like Crooked Can Brewery and food hall as well as The Grove Taqueria and Parkside District’s second location. The project was developed by Casto and MidCity in partnership with the City of Snellville Downtown Development Authority. In addition to the brewery and anchor restaurants, The Grove includes the Tomlin apartments, the Elizabeth H. Williams Library, Thrive Co-Working, and other shops and restaurants.
Patrons of local businesses in the district can buy and consume alcoholic beverages outside in The Grove as well as in portions of the Greenway Trail and other adjacent
areas in downtown. Beverages must be purchased from appropriately licensed businesses and consumed from containers identified by restaurant staff with a SED branded sticker. Alcoholic beverages bought from any other vendor are prohibited from being consumed in the entertainment district.
The SED logo was created using colors found in The Grove, most notably taking inspiration from the bright chairs around the lawn surrounding the Grove pavilion where concerts and movie nights are hosted. The logo also incorporates the unique design of the pavilion which mirrors the stand of trees preserved as part of the outdoor space of The Grove. The tree save area is an homage to Snellville’s history as a gathering place for doing business and building community, traditions that continue in a new way today. Decades ago, the area that is now The Grove was a tree-filled space where residents and travelers alike would meet.
In addition to marking beverage containers, the branding will be incorporated into informational signage around downtown that identifies the boundaries of the Snellville Entertainment District.
Crooked Can Brewery and food hall, The Grove Taqueria, and Parkside District are expected to open in the coming months along with Dumpling Master restaurant. Visitors to downtown Snellville can expect to raise a glass (outdoors) just in time for fall in Downtown Snellville.
Piedmont Heart at Eastside is an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI from the Society of Chest Pain Centers – the highest national accreditation possible for emergency heart care. We offer quality care for everything from heart attacks to post-surgery rehab.

Snellville Farmers’ Market
Magic at the Extended Season Market
By Charlene Britt Market Manager
As market manager, I’ll admit my anticipation going into the market’s colder months is sometimes less than enthusiastic. Dark, early mornings and frigid temperatures can test anyone’s spirit. But once the market comes to life, I’m reminded why it’s all worth it, it’s the amazing bond between the farmers and artisans who make it all happen and the folks who show up that make it possible.
There’s something peaceful about a winter morning at the market. The sounds are softer, the pace a little slower, and the smell of fresh bread and coffee drifts through the crisp air. Even in the cold, our market hums with quiet energy, proof that local food doesn’t hibernate when the weather turns chilly.
Now in its eighth season, the Snellville Farmers Market’s Extended Season is bigger and better than ever. With over 40 unique vendors, shopping is more than just a Saturday morning errand, it’s about showing up for the farmers and makers who brave the cold to bring something real to our community. Their dedication keeps the market thriving year-round even when most markets have packed away their tents.
With the holidays approaching, the market is the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind gifts and stocking stuffers galore. Shoppers will discover handmade pottery, custom designed watercolors, a beautiful selection of wood products, herbal teas, tea accessories, and all-natural bath and body care products, all handmade by local artisans. Each purchase supports small businesses and adds a personal touch to holiday giving.
Be sure to join us for a festive favorite Cookies & Cocoa with Santa on December 20 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.! Shoppers can enjoy sweet treats, sip on cocoa, and snap a holiday photo with Santa and Rosie, the beloved vintage 1967 Shasta camper, decked out for the season.
The market is also a great stop for anyone preparing traditional holiday meals. Farmers bring the best of the winter harvest — sweet potatoes, squashes, hearty greens, earthy mushrooms, root vegetables, and herbs, while bakers fill the air with the comforting scent of fresh bread, pies, and pastries. You’ll even find decadent handmade toffee and an assortment of seasonal flavored bon bons, perfect for gifting or adding a touch of indulgence to your holiday dessert table. Add nuts, local honey, jams, sauces and spices, and you have everything you need to make your holiday table shine.
You’ll also find plenty of ways to stay healthy and feel your best all season long. Alongside fresh produce, many of our vendors offer health and wellness products, from herbal teas, elderberry syrup, tinctures and sea moss blends to all natural cold and flu remedies and supplements.
Each visit makes a difference, sustaining small farms, strengthening local businesses, supporting the people who keep local food and craftsmanship thriving through every season and preserving the spirit of community that defines the Snellville Farmers Market.
So bundle up and make the market part of your winter routine. Whether you’re shopping for fresh ingredients, picking out a unique handmade gift, or simply soaking up the holiday spirit, you’ll find plenty of warmth and good cheer waiting.
Snellville Police Department takes home high honors at Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Awards
The Snellville Police Department has been recognized by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety during the 26th Annual Governor’s Challenge Awards, earning second place overall in its statewide category and first place statewide in Distracted Driving Enforcement and Education.
The Governor’s Challenge Awards are Georgia’s premier law enforcement recognition program, celebrating agencies that demonstrate outstanding commitment to highway safety through education, enforcement and community engagement. This year’s ceremony, held in Macon, marked more than two decades of honoring excellence among state, local, campus and military law enforcement agencies.
The Governor’s Challenge highlights innovative, results-driven approaches to reducing traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities across Georgia. Agencies are evaluated not only for enforcement initiatives but also for creative problem-solving, effective community outreach and policies that promote safe driving behaviors. The program aligns with national priorities including impaired driving prevention, occupant protection and speed reduction, while also encouraging
efforts to address local concerns such as distracted driving, pedestrian safety and young driver education.
“These honors reflect the hard work and dedication of every officer committed to keeping our community safe through proactive enforcement, education, and engagement,” said SPD Chief Greg Perry. “It’s a testament to our department’s continued focus on excellence and service.”
A special acknowledgment was extended to Lieutenant Poole for his outstanding work in preparing the department’s award submission. His professionalism and attention to detail helped showcase the Snellville Police Department’s excellence in highway safety on a statewide stage.
Perry also expressed his appreciation to all SPD officers:
“Our team’s ongoing commitment to road safety makes Snellville a safer place to live, work, and visit. This recognition belongs to every member of our department.”

‘A Christmas Carol’ comes to Snellville
By Stephanie McDonald Snellville Performing Arts
With the leaves changing and the weather starting to turn, the holiday season is almost here!
As you begin thinking about all the traditions that make this season extra special, Snellville Performing Arts is proud to announce an exciting partnership with the Atlanta Shakespeare Company to bring a beloved holiday classic to our community!
This year, on Friday, Dec. 19, Snellville will host the Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s professional touring production of Charles Dickens’ timeless tale, “A Christmas Carol,” offering residents and visitors alike a festive and memorable experience right here at home. For one night only, instead of heading downtown or traveling elsewhere, theatergoers can enjoy the magic of Dickens’ story in the comfort of our own city, making holiday cheer more accessible and convenient for everyone!
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a beloved holiday tale that follows the journey of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and coldhearted man visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. As the ghosts reveal the consequences of his greed and selfishness, Scrooge awakens to the true spirit of Christmascompassion, generosity, and kindness. The story’s timeless message encourages us all to embrace the holiday season with warmth and goodwill.
This event promises an enchanting evening with a variety of seating options to suit every preference. General Admission tickets provide an opportunity to enjoy the show from any seat in the house, while upgraded seating in the first two rows offers a more intimate experience. To enhance the festive spirit, a special pre-show VIP reception will be held beginning at 6 p.m, featuring a delicious charcuterie spread, beverages, music, and more. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season surrounded by community and cheer before the curtain rises for the show at 7 p.m.
Tickets for this unique holiday event can be purchased directly through the Snellville Performing Arts website at www. SnellvillePerformingArts.com.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or experiencing A Christmas Carol for the first time, this production promises to deliver warmth, nostalgia, and holiday magic. Don’t miss your chance to celebrate the season with this special collaboration, bringing a classic story to life right here in Snellville and creating new holiday traditions for years to come.

Community Garden @Snellville
Snellville gardeners take part in Day of Service
By Charlene Britt Garden Coordinator
Despite the dreary weather and bouts of rain, spirits were high at the Community Garden @ Snellville during this year’s Gwinnett Great Days of Service on Oct. 19. The garden was honored to have its project selected as part of this annual countywide initiative that brings together volunteers, civic groups, and local organizations to make a meaningful difference through hands-on service projects across Gwinnett County.
As part of this year’s effort, the garden teamed up with local community gardeners for a collaborative winter garden clean-up. When the skies decided to clear up, volunteers wasted no time getting to work—pulling weeds, edging beds, spreading mulch, moving materials, and more. A generous donation of mulch from the Snellville Recycling Center helped refresh garden beds and planting areas, giving the space a fresh look and healthy start for the coming season.
A total of 14 volunteers participated — seven from the community and seven from the Community Garden @ Snellville. Representing the garden were, Wes & Lucy Nettleton, Kathleen Keyes, Karen Hanley, Katherine Norris, Amanda Wu Chen, and Martha Whitman.
Reflecting on the day, Master Gardener Wes Nettleton shared, “Once the rain stopped, we were able to accomplish some great work, thanks to the congenial spirit of the group.”
The day served as a reminder of what can happen when neighbors come together with a shared purpose. Through teamwork, laughter, and a bit of muddy determination, this group of volunteers embodied the true spirit of community service.
A special shout-out goes to Martha Whitman for her hard work and dedication in coordinating this project with Gwinnett Great Days of Service. Her efforts helped the day run smoothly and ensured a successful, rewarding experience for everyone involved. Martha captured the spirit of the day best when she said, “The community volunteers who came out in the rain to a garden to get muddy and help others are the real stars here.”
This event was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen community ties, promote sustainable gardening practices, and showcase the power of collective service. We are grateful to all who participated and contributed their time and energy to support the continued growth and thriving spirit of the Community Garden @ Snellville.
Brookwood High School
Few events capture the spirit of a school quite like homecoming. Originally a college tradition designed to welcome back alumni, homecoming has evolved into a nationwide celebration of pride, unity, and community, especially at the high school level. And when it comes to celebrating community, few do it better than Brookwood High School. The annual homecoming parade brings together students, families, and staff from all six feeder schools to cheer on court representatives, principals, teachers of the year, media specialists, athletes, and club members. It’s a true showcase of what makes the Brookwood Cluster so special — students and families of all ages coming together to celebrate the diverse talents and interests that make our community shine. Even more, it inspires younger students to dream big and look forward to their own future as Broncos. After the parade, the Broncos took on Peachtree Ridge, earning a 45-27 football win for homecoming. At halftime, the 2025 Brookwood Homecoming Court was crowned. Congratulations to Prince Paul Wuhib, Princess Chelsea Gayle, Queen Sophie Hamilton and King Nick Ricketts!

South Gwinnett High School
On Sept. 26, South Gwinnett’s homecoming king and queen were crowned. Abdulbasit Kolawole (king) and Taliaa Pouncey (queen). Together, they are a shining example of leadership, spirit, excellence and Comet Pride!
On Sept. 23, South Gwinnett celebrated its volleyball seniors with a night filled with spirit, excitement, and a memorable win. Before the match, seniors were honored alongside their families for their years of dedication to the program, and the crowd’s energy carried into the game as the Comets secured a well-deserved victory.
At South Gwinnett High School, students are stepping into the world of healthcare through the Patient Care Technician (PC) program. Far from a typical classroom, these courses immerse students in hands-on experiences that mirror real clinical settings, preparing them for both immediate career opportunities and future medical studies. Students in the PCT pathway learn vital skills such as measuring vital signs, drawing blood, performing EKGs, assisting with patient mobility, and practicing infection control procedures. They also build critical communication skills, learning how to interact compassionately and professionally with patients of all ages and disabilities. Alongside technical training, students study medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and healthcare ethics. These concepts give students a strong foundation for both the science and the human side of medicine. What makes the program especially exciting is the opportunity for students to earn industryrecognized certifications before they graduate. Students gain certifications in CPR/First Aid, HIPPA, and Stop the Bleed. This means that they can step directly into the healthcare workforce as patient care technicians, gaining valuable experience while pursuing further education in nursing, medicine, or allied health careers. Through the PCT pathway at South Gwinnett High School, students are not just learning about healthcare, they are living it. They leave class with confidence, career readiness and the knowledge that they are part of the next generation of healthcare workers.

Election 2025
Outgoing councilmembers Cristy Lenski and Gretchen Schulz were given proclamations for their dedication and service to the City of Snellville through their time on council and numerous other contributions to the community. Lenski, a longtime teacher at South Gwinnett High School, amongst other contributions, most notably created the Snellville Youth Council, a civic organization for area students. Schulz, along with her husband Kurt, created the Community Garden at Snellville and the Snellville Farmers’ Market, both of which carry on today. The city owes both of these leaders a debt of gratitude for their hard work to make Snellville a stronger community. Good luck to you both on your future endeavors!
