Santa will be giving out a plush animal to all the children who visit him, while supplies last.

Saturday, November 30th

5-8 PM | Towne Green | 2342 Oak Rd.

Lighted Parade begins at 5:30 PM at Wisteria Plaza and ends at the Towne Green.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year sharing the holiday experience with family and friends. We are so excited to celebrate the joy and laughter as Snellville celebrates the 43rd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and 11th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade.

The Lighted Christmas Parade begins at 5:30 p.m. at Wisteria Plaza and will exit northwest onto Wisteria Dr., turn left onto Thomas Snell Way and go through The Grove and take a left onto Oak Road and end at the Towne Green.

Thousands of people will line the streets to watch the many lighted floats, tractors, trucks, cars and groups that will pass by, so plan to get there early for good viewing. And of course, Santa will be found at the end of the parade ready to greet all the children with well wishes. Santa and

his elves will have a special plush animal for everyone who comes to see him, while supplies last.

The Lighting of the Tree is at 7 p.m. Just before the lighting of the tree, join us as we sing Silent Night by candlelight.

Plan to celebrate the holiday tradition with an evening full of fun activities for the entire family to enjoy on the Snellville Towne Green.

• Cookie Decorating sponsored by Bill Rhodes Bakery

• Roasted S’mores sponsored by Tom Wages Funeral Services

Looking back on 2024 in Snellville

We are entering what I always think is a special time of year. With Thanksgiving upon us, and Christmas, Chanukah and the New Year just around the corner, it’s a time to reflect on 2024 and to be thankful for the many good things we have here in Snellville.

I’m thankful that Experience Snellville had a great year. We battled the weather on a few events, had to cancel some events and make some schedule changes that where challenging to navigate, but we pushed through and are proud of Experience Snellville. I’d like to specifically thank the members of the Board of Directors Kurk Schulz, Stephanie McDonald, Liz Jackson, Richelle Brown, Melvin Everson, Traci Leath and Deborah Jones. We have a great and hard-working staff lead by executive director Kelly McAloon, our events manager Annabelle Hammock, and our manager for the Famers’ Market and Community Garden, Charlene Britt. These board members and staff have worked hard and their contributions to our organization can’t be appreciated enough. I’m especially grateful for the many volunteers that helped during the 2024 season. All the events and activities would be impossible to produce without the much-appreciated help of the community volunteers. This board and staff, in concert with the many volunteers, have made us all proud of Snellville.

I also want to thank our 2024 event sponsors, which are listed on the inside back cover of the magazine. Without their generous support, we couldn’t do all the things we do, and I hope you will consider taking advantage of the products and services they offer.

I’m looking forward to the annual Lighted Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting on Nov. 30 on the Towne Green. Hundreds of families from Snellville and the surrounding area will gather to celebrate the season, and I hope to see you there.

Wishing all of you a very safe and happy holiday season!

Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender

We are pleased to announce that The Grove at Towne Center was awarded the Redevelopment Project of the year (8–10-acre size) at the Metro Atlanta Redevelopment Summit presented by Partnership Gwinnett on Nov. 6 (see Page 9). The Summit annually features and recognizes redevelopment projects across the metro Atlanta area in the small, medium and large project categories. We are honored that The Grove was recognized during this year’s event.

The Snellville Police Department was recognized on Oct. 25, being awarded the Governor’s Cup for the best police department in the state by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. This is the third year the SPD has been honored with this overall award and we could not be prouder. We truly have an incredible force of men and women dedicated to protecting and serving our community.

To round out the awards section, we need to congratulate the Snellville Parks & Recreation department for recognition received with the Outstanding Parks & Recreation Award by the United States Tennis Association. Advantage Evans Tennis in partnership

It is hard to imagine we are already heading into the holiday season. Please be mindful that during November and December, traffic in and around the Highway 124 corridor increases with the holiday season. Plan your travel times and routes in advance and, please, pay attention while driving for your safety and the safety of those around you.

Remember to shop local this holiday season and show your support on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30. It will be a perfect day to get a little Christmas shopping done and then head to the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on the Towne Green.

The entire City Council and staff joins me in wishing you all a very happy and joyous holiday season.

Remember to shop local this holiday season and show your support on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30. It will be a perfect day to get a little Christmas shopping done and then head to the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on the Towne Green.

Garbage that doesn’t fit inside your trash cart with a closed lid, must be placed in a “City of Snellville Blue Bag” in order to be collected by our sanitation provider. The purchase of these bags covers the cost of the excess garbage pick up. When needed, place the “City of Snellville Blue Bag” alongside your trash cart by 6 a.m. at the curb on your scheduled day of collection.

City of Snellville Blue Bags are available at Public Works, as well as Publix and Kroger located on Scenic Highway in Snellville. Go to the customer service desk at both Publix and Kroger for assistance. The Blue Bags are imprinted with the city seal. The Blue Bags are sold only by the bundle. Each bundle contains (10) bags and sells for $17. Garbage outside your 65-gallon cart will NOT be picked up if it is not in a “City of Snellville Blue Bag.”

Please call the Public Works Department at 770-985-3527, Monday - Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to schedule a curbside bulk item pick up. Bulk items are collected on your regular garbage day and must be scheduled with Public Works. You must purchase the official “City of Snellville Blue Bags,” attach three (3) blue bags to EACH bulk item (sofa, mattress, etc.), and place the item at your curb on your regular garbage day by 6 a.m.

Snellville Police Department

The Snellville Police Department strives to create a bond with the community it serves. To that end, officers are constantly in the community, building relationships with residents, young and old alike. Here are a few recent community-building endeavors.

1. The associates at Walmart on Scenic Highway provided the Snellville Police Department with enough candy to hand out to every child in Snellville on Halloween Night.

2. The Snellville Police Department put out a request to the community for donations of stuffed animals for children that our officers come into contact with. Thanks to Park Place Church as they answered our call for stuffed animal donations.

3. Snellville Police Officer Scott Hermel and Detective Daniela Garcia-Sayan (GGC Alum) attended a Public Safety Fair at the Georgia Gwinnett College. They had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of students from around the world.

4. Sergeant Scott Smith and Officer Scott Hermel had an amazing time hanging out with the Staff and Students at Exceptional Futures. They enjoyed talking, coloring, and even playing basketball.

5. Sunrise Rotary Club, police and Snellville employees collected 32 turkeys for the area’s needy.

The Grove at Towne Center

The Grove wins metro Atlanta development award

Snellville’s The Grove at Towne Center was named the Medium Redevelopment Project of the Year at the Metro Atlanta Redevelopment Summit Wednesday.

“As we continue to move toward full activation of the The Grove with restaurants and a brewery opening in 2025, it’s exciting to be recognized by the Metro Atlanta Redevelopment Summit,” said Mayor Barbara Bender. “We are proud of The Grove and look forward to filling the space with friends and neighbors who will enjoy a quality, family-friendly destination for years to come.”

The Grove is a transformative development in the heart of Snellville. With 33,000 square feet of restaurant space, 10,000 square feet of retail, residential space at The Tomlin, and the new Elizabeth H. Williams Branch of the Gwinnett Public Library, The Grove offers an ideal blend of dining, shopping and cultural

experiences. Numerous new businesses will open in the Grove in 2025, including Crooked Can Brewery (along with a food hall) and two restaurants overlooking the green space and splash pad.

The Grove is a $140 million public-private partnership between the City of Snellville, Gwinnett County, MidCity Real Estate Partners, and CASTO. The development was recognized at the Metro Atlanta Redevelopment Summit, presented by Gwinnett’s Community Improvement Districts, and co-hosted by Partnership Gwinnett and the Council for Quality Growth. The annual event highlights emerging trends in redevelopment and showcases exemplary developments and best practices for revitalization.

“Community redevelopment is essential in creating vibrant, thriving spaces that enhance the quality of life and drive sustainable economic growth for the entire region,” said Deven Cason, vice president of Economic Development for Partnership Gwinnett. “We proudly congratulate this year’s award winners and finalists for their innovative contributions and tireless efforts in revitalizing our communities. Their work is not only reshaping local landscapes but also fueling long-term economic prosperity in metro Atlanta. We are grateful for their dedication to building a brighter, more prosperous future.”

For more information about The Grove visit thegrovesnellville.com.

On Oct. 25, more than 160 people came to watch ‘Hocus Pocus’ on the big screen under the stars at The Grove at Towne Center. Children in Halloween costumes trick or treated at locations around The Grove including Allure Nail Bar, Marble Slab Creamery, THIRVE Coworking and the City of Snellville. Food was provided by A Lady and a Spatula and King of Pops. The event was the latest put on by the city to draw visitors to the new space. Look for a visit from Santa Claus on Dec. 15 and, as always, visit the city’s Facebook page or snellville.org to keep up on future events at The Grove.

Snellville Farmers’ Market

SFM challenge highlights culinary delights

The Snellville Farmers’ Market Recipe Challenge of 2024 emerged as a significant success, bringing together local culinary talents and fresh produce to celebrate the vibrant flavors inherent in our community.

Participants showcased their creativity by crafting distinctive and appetizing recipes that featured ingredients sourced directly from the market. After a thorough assessment, our panel of judges recognized the top two entries, each distinguished by its originality, flavor profile, creativity and incorporation of locally sourced ingredients. This event highlighted the significance of supporting local agriculture and fostered inventive ways to enjoy the seasonal delights of Snellville.

We are delighted to present our esteemed winners and delve into the inspirations that fuel their culinary creations.

Allow us to introduce Kareena Lee-Edwards, who draws upon her rich Jamaican heritage to craft her exquisite Jerk Brown Sugar and Fig Glazed Salmon accompanied by Garlic-Ginger Sautéed Purple String Beans. The genesis of this recipe lies in Kareena’s desire to merge the vibrant flavors of the Caribbean with the nuanced tastes of Asian cuisine. At the core of her culinary philosophy is the belief that Caribbean flavors should shine, and she skillfully incorporates the sweet and savory notes characteristic of Asian cooking. The addition of figs and a brown sugar glaze not only elevates the dish but also introduces a unique twist that remains accessible for home cooks. This recipe is designed to cater to a variety of dietary preferences, making it suitable for vegans, pescatarians, and those adhering to low-carb diets. Ultimately, Kareena emphasizes the importance of bold and harmonious flavors that can be savored by all, encouraging everyone to embrace the adventure of trying something new, even if it is just a little bit.

Michael Robinson’s Sourdough Cinnamon Roll Peach Cobbler, a delightful fusion of two beloved desserts. Peach cobbler has always held a special place in his heart, primarily due to his mother’s holiday traditions of preparing it. The combination of the warm, spiced filling and the crispy topping creates an exquisite flavor profile. Over time, his passion for baking has expanded, particularly in the realm of breads and pastries, with cinnamon rolls emerging as an unequivocal favorite. When faced with the challenge of creating a new dessert, he was struck with the idea of merging these two beloved treats, leading to the innovative concept of a cinnamon roll peach cobbler. As he gathered the essential ingredients, it became evident that peaches, eggs, and pecans were vital, but he sought to enhance his brioche rolls with a distinctive twist. It was during this process that he

stumbled upon golden potatoes, and quickly recognized them as his secret ingredient that would set his creation apart. His wife has long expressed her desire for him to prepare a peach cobbler, and surprisingly, prior to this competition, this request had not been fulfilled. While he has crafted every conceivable variation of cinnamon rolls for her, a peach cobbler had eluded his baking repertoire until now. Thanks to the Snellville Farmer’s Market, he is finally able to grant her wish.

Visit the Snellville Farmers’ Market website at www.snellvillefarmersmarket.com for full recipe details or scan the QR code.

Focus on the Arts

Snellville winter arts options abound

The weather is finally cooling off, but we’ve still got tons to celebrate in Snellville’s vibrant arts community! From upcoming community events to cheering on our local schools, we’ve got lots of exciting arts experiences for everyone this Winter!

As the school semester comes to an end, we want to celebrate the Fine Arts programming at both Brookwood and South Gwinnett! First, Brookwood High School’s theatre troupe recently showcased their talent at the GHSA Regional One Act competition with an impressive performance of “Working,” a musical that explores the lives of everyday people and their often unrecognized contributions to society through a series of heartfelt songs and monologues. The troupe’s outstanding performance included student Ireland Lacock winning Best Overall Performer and cast members Jed Weathers, Dina Ashenafi, and Sean Jones being recognized as All Stars. Their achievements at the competition not only reflect their individual talents, but also the unity and creativity of Brookwood’s theatre legacy.

As Brookwood competed this Fall, South Gwinnett has been working on building community! This year, students from South Gwinnett High School’s Fine Arts department embarked on a journey to their cluster elementary and middle schools with the Chorus, Theatre, Orchestra, Band, and Visual Arts students showcase their talent through performances designed to inspire and engage rising 5th and 8th graders. This initiative is important as it provides younger students with a firsthand glimpse into the fine arts opportunities available at the high school level, fostering a sense of excitement and motivation for their future pursuits.

It’s great to see our local students thriving in the arts in so many different ways, but what about the rest of us? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!

Snellville Performing Arts put out the word a few weeks ago online about a new class and they are thrilled to officially announce a new Country and Soul Line Dancing class for adults! Step into the lively world of Country and Soul Line Dancing and experience the joy of rhythmic movement! This class is perfect for all skill levels - whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner, their friendly instructors will guide you through fun routines and teach you the latest moves! Not quite ready to get your groove on, but still looking for an arts experience off the beaten path? There’s something for everyone in Snellville’s growing arts scene! Take time to reset, relax, and restore this winter with a totally different musical experience at the Saltville Grotto! Enjoy rejuvenating tranquil tones and soothing

sounds with live instruments like singing bowls, chimes, flutes, and more. SPD awarded GOHS Governor’s Cup

The Snellville Police Department is proud to announce it has been awarded the Governor’s Cup from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Challenge. This achievement marks the third time the department has secured the overall cup and the fifth time it has placed first among agencies of similar size in the past six years.

The Governor’s Cup recognizes exceptional efforts in traffic safety, community engagement, and proactive law enforcement initiatives. This year’s award highlights the department’s commitment to reducing traffic incidents and promoting safe driving practices within the community.

“We are honored to receive this recognition,” said Chief Greg Perry. “This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of our officers and staff, as well as the support of the Snellville community. We remain committed to making our roads safer for everyone.”

The Snellville Police Department has implemented a variety of successful programs aimed at enhancing roadway safety, including educational outreach, traffic enforcement, and community

partnerships. The department’s consistent performance in the Highway Safety Challenge underscores its commitment to excellence in law enforcement.

The award ceremony took place on Oct. 25, at the Macon Marriott City Center, where the Snellville Police Department was recognized alongside other outstanding agencies across the state.

City Attorney Ross given send off with a proclamation for his service

The City of Snellville is saying “goodbye and good luck” to City Attorney Wesley Charles “Chuck” Ross as he is moving on to another well-deserved opportunity.

He was honored with a proclamation for his outstanding service to the city from Mayor and Council Oct. 28.

“Chuck has consistently showcased his legal expertise by navigating complex matters, providing sound advice, and ensuring justice, fairness, and adherence to the law in every facet of city governance,” the proclamation reads. “Even in the most difficult circumstances, he always maintains his professionalism, along with a quick-witted sense of humor.”

Ross began working with the city in 2015 with the law firm of Powell & Edwards and has maintained the standard of legal excellence as City Attorney. The firm will continue to represent the city.

Mayor Barbara Bender said the city wishes Ross “much happiness and success as he begins this exciting new chapter of his life. May his future endeavors be as rewarding and fulfilling as his years of service to the City of Snellville.”

Ross as born and raised in Kentucky, earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kentucky, a Master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University, and a Juris Doctor degree from Ohio Northern University. He and his wife of 30 years, Mary, have two daughters, Caroline and Anna Grace.

Quality of Life Unit adds new officer to help keep compliance

There are now three Code Enforcement officers on the road, thanks to action taken by Mayor and Council recently. Tori FobbMoore joined the Quality of Life Unit recently, increasing the city’s code enforcement options to keep the city clean and in compliance with codes and regulations. Fobb-Moore joins Chief Code Enforcement Officer Johnny Greene and Officer Briana Hajirizi.

The Quality of Life Unit focuses on compliance with all city codes and ordinances that may affect the city’s quality of life, its aesthetics and the welfare of its citizens. The unit addresses a wide range of issues that affect the environment, health, safety, property values and general well-being of the City of Snellville. Preservation and improvement are recognized by government leaders as necessary to prevent the deterioration of our surroundings and enhance the quality of life. Send questions or complaints to the unit at qualityoflife@snellville.org.

The Snellville Youth Commission held its second annual Town Hall Meeting recently, getting a chance to quiz city leaders and learn about the issues facing the city. The event was moderated by SYC Mayor Daye Kebe and Vice Mayor Tomiwa Adedipe. Panelists included; Mayor Pro Tem Tod Warner, Councilman Norman Carter, City Manager Matt Pepper and Snellville Police Department Officer Scott Hermel.

South Gwinnett High School

Justice Verda Colvin of the Georgia Supreme Court made a significant impact during her visit to South Gwinnett High School on Oct. 1. The event, attended by the Public Service, Law and Media students, aimed to inspire the next generation of leaders and promote civic engagement. Colvin shared her personal journey and insights into the judicial system, emphasizing the importance of education and community service. ‘You have the power to shape the future,’ she told the students. ‘Every decision you make today lays the groundwork for tomorrow.’ Principal Rodney Jordan remarked, ‘We are honored to host Justice Colvin. Her visit not only highlights the importance of the legal system but also encourages our students to pursue their dreams and contribute positively to society.’

South Gwinnett High School recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month where at least 75 Fine Arts and Latinos Unidos students presented a spectacular band, orchestra, choral and dance performance.

South Gwinnett football gears up for strong finish to season

As South Gwinnett High School football enters the second half of its season, the team has proven resilient in a year marked by both regional changes and unforeseen schedule shifts, including disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene. Despite these challenges, the Comets are poised for a strong finish, with high hopes for a state playoff berth.

A dynamic running game and a formidable defense — boasting

several college-bound recruits — have been the key ingredients in South Gwinnett’s success so far. The highlight of the season to date came with their commanding 42-20 victory over neighboring Brookwood in the annual “Battle of Snellville,” securing bragging rights and solidifying their position as a team to watch. With momentum building, the Comets look ready to tackle the back half of their schedule and make a deep playoff run.

Brookwood High School

Brookwood Softball wins back to back region titles

Brookwood Softball clinched the Region 7-AAAAAA title for the second year in a row. This program sets high standards for their players on and off the field, and our Broncos are exceeding them. The following is a Q&A with two senior players, Anna Hillmer and Lorelei Sullivan, to learn a little about this team. Both seniors have played all four years for Brookwood, with Anna at catcher and Lorelei in center field.

Your team slogan is #GiddyUp - what does that mean to you?

Anna - For me, it’s definitely just to bring the energy 100%. As a catcher, I have to be a leader on and off the field and be there for everyone else.

Lorelei - For me, it’s to get hyped before the game and bring energy. We also say it as a cheer on the field.

Does your team have any traditions?

Anna - We have a little toy horse on a stick named Neightasha. It’s handed down from a senior to a freshman. They bless us with luck and give us a kiss for luck with the horse head before the games.

Lorelei - My freshman year it was handed down to me from Kayla Widy. I’ll hand it down at the end of the year.

Tell me about Coach Parham.

Anna - He is the perfect balance of fun and getting on to us when we need to have a fire lit.

Lorelei - I agree with that. He’s overall pretty chill, if we’re doing the right stuff.

What are your plans for next year?

Lorelei - I’m going to play softball at NE Alabama Community College.

Anna - I’m playing at Chattahoochee Valley Community College.

What do you want future Bronco players to know?

Anna - I feel like how we play, we play for the future generations. It’s so much bigger than what we think it is. We’re trying to win region, win state, but we’re also setting the stage for the future.

Lorelei - Do it for the love of the game and for your teammates. Do it because it’s fun, not because you have to do it.

Anna - And it can still be fun once it gets more competitive.

Brookwood Softball’s program description states, “The success of this program will be measured not only by its play on the field, but also by the lifelong impact it will have on all persons who totally commit themselves to the program.” Clearly the coaches are creating and sustaining an environment where the players fully buy in - not just for themselves, and not just for their teammates, but for the future Broncos as well.

Brookwood students step up for Hurricane Helene victims

Several of Brookwood Cluster’s schools collected donations for the victims of the recent hurricanes. At Brookwood HS, Kelly Swanson organized a donation drive for hurricane victims in North Carolina. A fully-packed Suburban and truck delivered the items over Fall Break. The donations went to Hearts With Hands and Samaritan’s Purse in Swannanoa, about 15 minutes from Asheville. We are so proud of the generosity of our community in providing items such as diapers, undergarments, bleach, food, water, and more. Thank you for your support!

THE 7TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL TASTE

OF SNELLVILLE was another huge success as TEAM SNELLVILLE covered every little detail. This was a rescheduled event due to inclement weather in September, but the weather did not disappoint in November, it was absolutely the perfect day! With over 25 participating restaurants on the Towne Green, local chef’s shared the many flavors of Snellville with the vast number of people who attended the event.

Many thanks to our judges (Chef Mike Fromme, Chef David Humphrey and foodie Griselle Mendez) who had the hard job of awarding the “BEST OF SHOW” which was awarded to Lorena’s Kitchen, Chilean Cuisine.
